117: Creating a “Heck Yes!” Homeschool Plan
46:51

It’s time to get real about our fall plans. We can’t do it all, and we have to be honest about what is really going to give us life this school year. Which means some plans—even good ones!—have to get cut. We’re talking about paring down curriculum, co-ops, and clubs as we head into the school year. Let’s approach homeschool planning with the mindset: “If it’s not a Heck Yes, it’s a Heck No!”

116: No Report Cards Necessary: The Power of Self-Evaluation
54:09

A lot of homeschooling and parenting is about helping our kids develop skills for their toolboxes. In this episode, we’re talking about one of our favorite tools: self-evaluation. We get into why this skill is so important and how we build self-evaluation into our homeschool—from the planning stages to our daily routines to (gasp!) homeschooling without grades and report cards. Empowering our kids to self-evaluate bolsters their self-awareness and self-confidence, and it helps us exercise trust in them and ourselves—it’s the ultimate win-win! This episode is a must-listen as you plan your school year. (You might even want to jot down some of the “What We Don’t Do” ideas we share.)

114: Homeschool That’s Fun for Everyone, Including YOU
44:42

This is the podcast where we keep homeschool simple, real, and fun... and this episode is all about the FUN! Why focus on fun? Because as the Finnish proverb says, "Those things you learn without joy, you will forget easily." Research shows that learning happens best when everyone (including you!) is in a good mood and feels loved. We share some of the ways we're making homeschool fun and how we're prioritizing connection over lessons and to-do lists.

113: Interest-Led Learning IRL
50:52

We’re getting real about interest-led learning IN REAL LIFE. What is it? How does it work? Do you have to commit to a whole new homeschooling method? (Hint: You don't.) What's our role? What if our kids' interests are less-than academic or difficult to support? We process through all these questions, talk through how interest-led learning benefits our kids, and work through the challenges we have with it every single day.

111: Where We Hit the Road
46:14

With recent and upcoming trips fresh on our minds, we’re taking this show on the road and talking all about homeschool + travel! How do our kids learn through travel? Do our travel activities have to be “academic” to be educational? What are the non-academic lessons that travel can teach us? We discuss ways to enhance travel’s inherent learning (and relational) experiences—from the planning stages through the return trip and beyond. This is a great episode if you’re thinking about big summer vacation travel plans, roadschooling, or even a simple weekend trip out of town.

Not unrelated, we talk self-care and how vital that is to sustaining ourselves as we homeschool.

You do not want to miss this packed hour where we celebrate 100 EPISODES(!!) of keeping homeschool simple, real & fun.  Celebrate with us because there is so much for YOU in this episode!  We’ll reflect on how we have changed and grown over the last 100 episodes (we asked our patrons to help us out with this, so listen for them, too!), we talk personalities and how much our homeschool has benefited from learning about them, and we tell you how you could win swag!

THANK YOU for being part of this awesome community, whether you have listened to one episode or 100.  Thank you for supporting the message that WE are enough, and that doing more is not always the answer.  Thank you for thinking differently about homeschool right along with us.  WE are changing the conversation about homeschool one episode at a time.

Where We Don't Do It All With Candace Cameron Bure
45:17

We practically grew up with Candace Cameron Bure as DJ on Full House and now we get to see her even more (Hallmark movies, Netflix, and her Instagram Stories are 💯).  So it felt a little like a reunion of sorts when we sat down with Candace for a fun chat about her new children’s book, Candace Center Stage, which is an inspiring book about trying new things, being brave, and having perseverance.  Besides talking books, we brought up our favorite topics: personalities, what we don’t do, giving ourselves credit, homeschooling & parenting.  It felt like we were having coffee with a good friend.  Can’t wait to do it again, Candace!

95: Where We October Check-In
56:55

It’s check-in day, which is quickly becoming our favorite!  This week we update each other on past all-important LTWs.  We also get real about what’s going well, what needs tweaking, and how we’re doing at self-care.  We do this, because so much growing happens in the processing.  We don’t have all the answers, and even if we did, they might not be the answers you need!  Processing helps us all feel good about what we’re doing today, gives us clarity, and reminds us we’re all in this together.  Check-in here, if you’d like!  We’d love to hear from you.😊

91: Where We Werk!
55:09

In this episode, we navigate the ups and downs of being a working parent, especially when it comes to homeschooling.  This gig isn’t easy, but for so many of us, working is an important part of our lives. If you think this episode isn’t for you, think again!  We are all working and parenting.  We could make a list a mile long of the many tasks we all do that hold our house together.  Let’s give ourselves credit for the many hats we wear.  How do you balance working and parenting?

53:16

We loved our summer check-in series so much, we decided to make it a monthly reoccurring episode.  We’ll check in with what’s going well, what needs tweaking, and how our self-care is going.  If you have a friend who can do this type of check-in with you, go for it now!  If not, we’re here for you.  What’s going well, what needs tweaking, and how is YOUR self-care going?

88: Where We Empower Kids To Self-Evaluate
49:45

This week, we dive into the vital skill of self-evaluating.  We hone in on why it’s so good and how we do it (or how we WANT to do it more).  We also think of some good examples of what it looks like when there is successful self-evaluation happening.  As always, we have a fun chat to start out the episode, and we end with our LTWs (Loving This Weeks).

43:53

We are reminding ourselves to take joy in the beginning of the school year!  We’re going to prioritize connection first, not our to-do list.  Learning happens best when everyone’s in a good mood and feels loved.  In this episode we talk all about how important it is to have fun as a family, and we share what we’re doing to make that happen this year.

46:45

In this episode, we get real about our fall plans.  The rubber meets the road with some tough decisions.  We can’t do it all, and we have to be honest about what is really going to give us life this school year.  Which means some plans that seemed great must get cut.  Our favorite (okay, maybe hardest) thing to say for this school year is, “If it’s not a Heck Yes, it’s a No!”

61: Where We Do a Curriculum Check-In
01:08:17

It’s February and we decided a little curriculum check-in was in order.  We’ve made some major and minor tweaks since the start of the year and we thought we’d chat about all of that together.  We start off talking about our general philosophy on curriculum and what we mean when we mention it. Then we spill the beans on exactly what we’re using (or not using) for each subject for each of our kids. This episode got a little lengthy but we know it’s a topic that interests many homeschoolers.  Enjoy!

Throwback: Where We Talk Science With Jenny
41:28

Happy New Year Everyone! While we are on break, we thought you might enjoy this episode we released almost a year ago.  In it, we talk all about making science fun and accessible with our friend, Jenny Schultz.  We look forward to coming back with a new episode next week!

"Sometimes the best way to teach science is to not answer kids' questions." - Jenny Schultz

Today our first guest, Jenny Schultz, is here to talk to us about integrating science into our homeschool days.  Jenny shares with us how easy it is to incorporate science into what you're already doing because kids are naturally curious.  She gives great ideas for making science fun and interesting.

51: What Every Homeschool Parent Deserves {Gift Guide}
01:01:22

If we got to register for gifts upon becoming homeschool parents, these are the things we'd register for.  These things have made our lives easier as parents whose days are full parenting, teaching and living life.  You don't need to be a homeschool parent to benefit from listening - this is for all parents, grandparents and regular people looking for hacks to help ease stress.  All of these items would be great gifts for any parent or child in your life (or yourself, of course!).

40:58

Do you need to simplify your days?  Or do you need something easy to get you through a stressful day, week or season? Today Maren and Angela talk about the idea of Autopilot and how they use it to lower stress and simplify their days.  When you use Autopilot, much learning happens and it's easy on the homeschooling parent and child.  There are so many benefits, we wonder why we're not using it more often.

40: Where We Let Go of Perfectionism
46:29

In this episode we talk all about the ways we can get perfectionistic in homeschooling and parenting. Striving for excellence is one thing but that can easily slide into perfectionism.  We talk about our own perfectionistic tendencies and their consequences.  We also talk about why it's actually a good thing to not complete the curriculum or have a messy house, for example.

Warning: this episode has some serious borderline obnoxious laughter at the beginning when Maren and Angela reminisce about their first experience with yoga class.  If you aren't into this, you may want to skip ahead a few minutes.

In this episode, we challenge the notion that homeschool parents need to do loads of planning.  We encourage you to know yourself and do what works best for YOU.  Do you love to plan?  Then go for it! Does the thought of planning overwhelm you?  Do you like to plan differently than other homeschool parents you know?  It's ok - embrace your style because everything will go more smoothly if you do.
