Monday Mumblings - S1E002 - A History of Body Positivity and Body Liberation
47:22

Background

Body Positivity may seem to be a modern movement as the hashtags and Instagram ready photos and images threaten to take over your feeds on a daily basis.  The fight for the freedom to love our bodies is older than the internet - going back as long as we have had our bodies.  As long as there have been human beings coexisting in groups of 2 or more people there have been ongoing struggles and battles to decide the “best” way or “right way” to be.

Historically the battles were not always about the same things.  Our ideas of what the perfect body has changed over time.  In earlier days it was about the body type that was most likely to survive being run down by a saber-toothed tiger - lean and fast or strong and bulky.  In areas where food was scarce, it was a display of wealth or success to have a body that was plump.  Long ago in China, it was a symbol of wealth and status to be able to maintain a woman whose feet were bound.  In Japan, foot binding was also a practice, specifically for dancers and courtesans.

What this means is - the ideal body, the idea of beauty, of body perfection is simply that - a picture.  It is not a firm thing, written in stone.  It is an ever-changing image - fluid with the times.  Today’s ideal bodies are described in many terms, including:

  • Gender Identity
  • Race
  • Age
  • Ability
  • Size
  • Hair color

Ideal body types are perpetuated by the media, by our stories, by the books we read and by the nature of our lives.  Around the world, there are vast ranges of what ideal bodies or beauty is defined as.

Body Positivity versus Body Liberation

There are two semi-parallel, semi opposing movements that can be designated under the body positive movement.  Monkey and Miss Laura discuss these two movements in the first Monday Mumbling of August (this aired on August 6 - so check it out).

The first is the Body Positive Movement.

The second is the Body Liberation Movement.  http://queerfatfemme.com/2016/08/29/body-liberation-activism-in-five/

A Brief History

I am honestly not sure that anyone could create an accurate timeline of the different cultures globally, and their movement towards body positivity, body liberation, or body acceptance.  We absolutely welcome anyone’s input on actions that we have missed here.  There have been many instances in history where things were done to create and attain an ideal body - that was later determined to be damaging to people in a physical or health or wellbeing manner - or that simply changed for other reasons.

We are going to select just a few instances:

  1. Feudal Japan Foot Binding  - https://heianjapanweb.wordpress.com/2016/10/17/blog-post-title/

This practice started in and around 1000 AD and continued through around 1750 AD.   Foot binding originated in the tenth or eleventh century by dancers and courtesans. This was a practice where a young girl’s feet were tightly wrapped. This usually caused the bones to break, thus causing extreme pain.

There are many aspects to foot binding that relate or go back to social influence. Foot binding was first found to be generally accepted among the elite families. However, later this practice became more common and known throughout society. Mothers started the force this painful procedure onto their daughters as a way of enhancing their marriage possibilities and gaining more attention from their husbands. This procedure soon turned and started to become viewed as a right of passage.

There were many health issues with this practice, including infection.  It also served to force women to rely on men for almost everything.

  1. Foot Binding in China - https://www.scmp.com/magazines/post-magazine/article/1854927/all-about-sex-real-reason-why-chinese-women-bound-their-feet

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/why-footbinding-persisted-china-millennium-180953971/

Women in China also suffered through foot binding.  In fact, there are still a few women in their 80’s and 90s today that were subjected to this practice in their childhood.  In China, the practice was directly related to a perceived improvement in pleasure for men during sex.  Crippled feet required one to walk in a certain mincing manner to avoid toppling over; as a result, it was believed, the inner thigh and pelvic muscles became unusually tight. Thus, more lurid thought processes went, the smaller the bound feet, the stronger the vaginal muscles would be during lovemaking.

Foot binding also demonstrated male economic power. At a time when most Chinese people existed only a few rice bowls away from starvation, being able to keep economically unproductive women whose only practical functions – due to crippled feet – were decorative, sexual and reproductive, was a powerful status marker.

Strident opposition on the part of 19th-century Christian missionaries gradually affected social change and the practice was eventually outlawed.  Nevertheless, decades elapsed between official abolition and the actual end of foot binding. It happened well into the 1930s and elderly women with bound feet can still be found, especially in China’s rural areas.

  1. Corsets in the Victorian Ages

Though it may seem somewhat removed from modern body positivity ideals, the Victorian Dress Reform movement—a campaign fueled largely by middle-class feminists from the 1850s through 1890s—could be considered a precursor to the activism of today.

Granted, dress reform activists didn’t always push back against fat shaming of the era, but they did argue that women shouldn’t be forced to mutilate their bodies with overly-restrictive corsets or bury their legs under mountains of petticoats. Organizations like the Society for Rational Dress argued that a woman’s place was in a pair of pants. And with that shift in sartorial trends, women’s bodies began to get more freedom to exist in their natural state.

  1. Fat Shamers

It was in the mid 20th century that the focus began to shift from fashion to fat shaming. The modern body positivity movement has its roots in the activism of the late 1960s—though at the time, it took a slightly different form. Instead of broadly arguing that all bodies are beautiful, these activists exclusively championed the rights of one particularly denigrated group: fat people. And it wasn’t Instagram likes or fashionable clothes they were after, but tolerance from a medical establishment that tortured and sought to eradicate them.

  1. Fat Acceptance Movement

Kicked off by the 1967 publication of Lew Louderback’s Saturday Evening Post essay “More People Should Be Fat,” fat acceptance quickly coalesced into an organized activist movement. The National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA) was founded in 1969 and has been arguing against our obsession with thinness ever since.

One of the core principles of NAAFA, and fat activism more broadly is that most of the ideas we promote about fatness and health are just plain wrong. Instead of blindly treating fatness as an indicator of poor health, fat activists argue for a Health At Every Size model. Under this framework, it’s not whether you’re fat or what shape your body is that matters—everyone is encouraged to engage in healthy lifestyles and eating habits, and vital signs like blood pressure and cholesterol and general wellness are treated as more important measures of health than weight or BMI.k

  1. The Body Positive Movement (https://studybreaks.com/culture/body/)

The Body Positive was found in 1996 by Connie Sobczak and Elizabeth Scott. Sobczak lost her sister and struggled with an eating disorder herself in her teen years. The organization has a lengthy mission statement that encompasses professional training and making a better world for women to live in with fewer standards to follow from the media.

The Body Positivity Movement hopes to create “a world in which people are liberated from self-hatred, value their beauty and identity and use their energy and intellect to make positive changes in their own lives and in their communities.”

  1. Our Body, Ourselves - by a women's group in 1969 in Boston. In 1970, they published a 193-page course booklet on stapled newsprint entitled “Women and Their Bodies.” You can read the full text, which is available as a PDF file.  In 1971, they changed the title to “Our Bodies, Ourselves” to emphasize women taking full ownership of their bodies.

https://www.ourbodiesourselves.org/history/

There are many people who have different perspectives on the Body Positive Movement:

https://www.theperspective.com/debates/living/perspective-body-positive-movement/

Pros

Changing the Stereotype

America scrapes in at 9th of the top ten most obese countries in the world. With a rise in obesity comes growing obesity discrimination, which pushes the idea that being overweight is a sign of laziness, poor hygiene and lack of self-care. Studies have also found that most Americans link being overweight with these undesirable stereotypes and that employers view obese people undesirable job candidates. However, by inspiring people to focus on health over beauty standards, BoPo uses language that strips away stereotypes, creating a more accepting society. It separates weight from health, body image from self-worth. The movement recognizes the stigma around different body types as weighing us down as a society and tries to alter it for the better.

Holding the Fashion Industry Accountable

BoPo’s success reaches beyond the health world and into fashion. This means that the next generation of women will be raised surrounded by relatable imagery and self-acceptance. It started small, with the emergence of boutique plus-size body-positive brands that cater to the fashion-minded. But BoPo has since seeped its way into the mainstream. There was a loud roar of ‘represent us, we are your people,’ and big names like Nike also began embracing BoPo. We preach that children can be whoever they want to be, but these images now show that we can be exactly who we are.

Happy People are Healthy People are Happy People

For those with weight issues, who never felt confident, comfortable or energetic enough to exercise, the BoPo movement has created a space for exercise that embraces all body types. Take Curvy Yoga, for example. As a philosophy, yoga encourages self-acceptance, and Curvy Yoga practices what it preaches. Inspired by BoPo, yoga teacher and blogger Anna Guest-Jelley started this revolutionary yoga program which embraces and encourages fuller figures. This is just one form of exercise that alleviates symptoms of depression through the exercise that is kind to the mind and body.

Cons

A Hijacked Movement

BoPo is the rebranding dream the diet industry was waiting for. In the 90s, Americans spent $30 billion on diet pills and programs. Rather than fixing the weight epidemic, the diet industry developed a reputation for capitalizing on the desperation of overweight consumers. This changed when BoPo hit the mainstream; companies wanting to distance themselves from past diet fads and reconnect with the ‘average American’ rode BoPo’s coattails back into relevance.

However, once in the mainstream, the real bodies celebrated by the original movement were replaced by ‘plus-sized’ models. Nowadays, the ‘ideal body’ is still out of reach for most who are striving for ‘the new perfect’. In a movement that once accompanied all bodies and all colors, the #BoPo hashtag is typically shared alongside a Lululemon outfit. #celebrateallwomen?

 Our Health, Our Responsibility

In a society where weight gain is seen as a health issue, for both men and women, it should be treated as such, without clothing companies or BoPo justifying unhealthy sizes. For instance, the average American dress size – 14 – is actually branded in the UK and Australia as 16. By switching the labels, companies are pandering to our ‘beauty standard’ driven egos rather than to our ‘health risk’ reality. In contrast, in Japan, the government implemented a health care system that awards levels of health care depending on waist size. This system recognizes that just like smoking, we are responsible for what we put in our bodies. There is no trend or stigma attached there; it is a health issue plain and simple. If our body is a temple. America’s temples need restoration.

Just Stop Talking About My Body

BoPo is another unwelcome way for our bodies to be at the center of a societal discussion. Our relationship with our bodies should not be public discourse, as it makes it harder for individuals to find their own personal relationship with their self-image and health. The pressure to love our bodies replaces the pressure to perfect our bodies. Do you love yourself enough? Love yourself, eat the donut. Love yourself, don’t eat the donut. Body neutrality is the only way we can change the mindset. As long as our bodies are the center of attention, which BoPo pushes for, we will always feel vulnerable and insecure.

Bottom Line: From celebrating diversity to encouraging physical and mental health, #BoPo inspires many. However, the diet industry capitalizes on this inspiration and distorts our self-image, yet again. Is BoPo the next level of self-love or is it distracting us from personal health goals?

BCBC - Nugget - S3-E0002 - Eda Gorbis - Body Dysmorphia
27:58

Welcome to the August month on Body Positivity.  We are really excited to come back with our third Season and second Nugget.

Toda, in this mini-podcast episode we have Monkey speaking with Dr. Eda Gorbis from Los Angeles, CA. Dr. Gorbis is an expert in anxiety disorders and has been working with these disorders since 1999.  She fell in love with the idea of body dysmorphic disorder and started to specialize in that.

Most of us have something we don't like about our appearance — a crooked nose, an uneven smile, or eyes that are too large or too small. And though we may fret about our imperfections, they don’t interfere with our daily lives.

But people who have body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) think about their real or perceived flaws for hours each day. They can't control their negative thoughts and don't believe people who tell them that they look fine. Their thoughts may cause severe emotional distress and interfere with their daily functioning. They may miss work or school, avoid social situations and isolate themselves, even from family and friends, because they fear others will notice their flaws.

Jessamyn Stanley is a yoga teacher, body positivity advocate, and writer based in Durham, North Carolina. Jessamyn uses high energy vinyasa flow as a way to move past mental and emotional barriers. Her classes provide a body positive approach to yoga which celebrates students’ bodies and encourages them to ask “How do I feel?” rather than “How do I look?” when practicing yoga.

BCBC - Cluckin' Moo-Zings - June 13 2018 - Mom's Commandment
08:12

In this NEW segment from the Brown Chicken Brown Cow Show, The Professor has written the first guest blog for our newest blog series titled "Cluckin' Moo-Zings". In this episode The Professor reflects on his past, being a white cis-gendered male, and the black people he lived near that touched his life as he did theirs.

This is a moving, powerful, and loving blog. As I write this (Monkey) I am moved to tears again at the Professor's memories, what he learned, and the lessons he has carried within himself to this day to be a better person... and was willing to share with all of us.

About "Cluckin' Moo-Zings"

So it seems The Brown Chicken and the Brown Cow have decided to take over the second Tuesdays.  Blog posts will be about current events, looking at a few sides of relevant topics, and bringing in guest bloggers for special blogs and mini-series of blogs.

BCBC - Nugget - s2e021 - Robin Mandell - Ready Sex Able
14:29

About this episode...

This weeks nugget continues our discussion on sex, disability, and accessibility. We get to hear Monkey chatting with Robin Mandell - a writer, health and sexuality advocate, volunteer and much more! Robin resides in Seattle, WA.

Robin has been working in the sexuality advocate area for around 8 years now and spends a lot of time speaking at different conferences, bringing the disability piece into those situations.  She also spends a lot of time reaching out to people online in public spaces like facebook and twitter. She casually reaches out and speaks with disabled folks as well in a one on one format.  She is modest and does not believe she has had a huge impact on the community, but she does like to think she has been able to reach out to a few people. Her goal has always been to reach out to disabled people about sexuality and to the general public about disability and sexuality.

Robin has created a website called Ready Sexy Able.  This site is really an extension of who Robin is and is aimed at being an online library. Robin likes to talk about the many bright and amazing voices out there - speaking really candidly about their own sexualities and challenges. She wanted Ready Sex Able to be a bigger picture, pulling those voices together into a single site, an online library, and resource. Robin aims to highlight voices that may not be heard as much.

You can find Robin at...

www.readysexyable.com

https://twitter.com/readysexyable

About Robin Mandell...

Robin Mandell is a writer, healthy sexualities advocate, and yoga teacher.

She has been working in the sexuality field as a writer, speaker, and volunteer educator for the past 9 years, and calls on her experience studying Women's Studies, volunteering with crisis hotlines, and, more recently, training as a yoga teacher, to inform her work.

In 2015, Robin founded Ready, Sexy, Able, an online clearinghouse of sexuality and disability information and resources. She hopes that highlighting a variety of voices and experiences will encourage people to think about both sexuality and disability, separately and together, with more depth and creativity.

When she isn't writing or talking about sexuality and relationships, Robin can be found reading quirky novels and nonfiction, practicing yoga, exploring her new home in the Pacific Northwest, going to the symphony, browsing Etsy, and spending time with her partner.

Three of Robin's favorite things: dogs, tea, and gluten-free cookies.

BCBC - Podcast - s2e17 - Eva Sweeney
38:10

About this episode...

Miss Laura and Monkey are super excited to meet today with Eva Sweeney. Before we start we have a couple of notes to go over with you. First, this episode may have some longer pauses due to the communication styles - just be patient dear listeners - we promise it is worth it. Second, this interview is recorded over a speakerphone to accommodate Eva’s needs so it may be a bit noisier than you are used to - again - it is still worth it! We did some things in the audio edit to minimize this but it still happens! And now, on to the show…

Eva Sweeney is a gender queer disabled person who works as a sex educator and freelance writer. She writes a lot on topics around sex, disability, and queer culture. She is joined by her assistant, Cameron who voices for Eva. Eva would like people to know she is just a normal person and is not at all inspirational just for getting out of bed.

Eva has cerebral palsy, which for her means she uses a wheelchair to get around and she speaks by using a laser pointer mounted to her head and a letter board. This board is read by whoever she is speaking to or her aide. She needs assistance with almost all physical functions. She is in control of her life - she just needs a little help. For this interview, she pre-wrote out the answers to many of the questions. For any follow-up questions, you will hear her aide help her as she uses the board to respond.

Eva shares her ideas on maintaining a positive body image - and discusses how she does not conform to the “mainstream” and responds with “Fuck that - I am hot!”. She is overflowing with self-confidence. As far as advice to people on maintaining a positive body image - Eva says “Just be yourself and don’t give a fuck what other people think of you.”

One final message from Eva - “Just stay open minded.”

About Eva Sweeney

Eva Sweeney is a 35-year-old genderqueer disabled female who works primarily as a sex educator and freelance writer. Her topics include disabilities and sex, gender, and queer culture. She is also the creator of the documentary, Respect: The Joy of Aides. She has been doing Sex and Disability workshops for 15 years and started doing this work because she found a huge lack of good sex positive information for people with disabilities. Eva wrote the book Queers on Wheels and has traveled the country giving workshops about Sex and Disability. She is also available for private consultations.

BCBC - Nugget - s2e020 - Susan of SexSupport.org
18:37

In this episode...

Today’s Nugget Guest is Susan Fitzmaurice - a lifelong sex and disability advocate, parent of a child with a disability, and owner of the website SexSupport.org.

Susan’s Sex Support has been around since 1995 - perhaps one of the oldest sex support sites out there. The organization started off to support the needs of parents who had children with disabilities. Susan’s own son was born with developmental disabilities.  When she looked for information to help support her son as he grew up, she could find absolutely nothing out there. Over time she accumulated a large amount of information and decided to put it out there on a website for other people who had questions so they would have a resource to go to for their own questions and to help support them support their children. The site became a combination site for both professionals and for people with disabilities or their support network (of parents and family members) - to help with healthy growth and development for children with disabilities.

Susan’s site is primarily informational but it is a sex support site and does have a store. There are only ever a dozen products or so on that store, specifically geared towards beginners and introductory sex toys. These are specifically described and offered without images of naked people so that this site would be more widely used. In her experiences, she has found that it was difficult to pass muster into schools, religious organizations, etc who needed this information but nudity prevents usage within the organization guidelines.

You can find all of this information at www.sexsupport.org.

A little about Susan Fitzmaurice...

Susan Fitzmaurice is a lifelong disability advocate, a person with multiple disabilities, a parent of a son with other disabilities, and thinks sex-positivity is a critical component to living well with a disability. She has written many journal articles including "A mother’s narrative: Reflections on life with a disability." Sexuality and Disability, Summer, 2002, Volume 20, No. 2, “The Name for a child with a Disability” in Sticks and Stone: Disabled People's Stories of Abuse, Defiance, and Resilience, and "Inclusive education, sexuality, and developmental disabilities", Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality.

BCBC - Podcast - s2e16 - Tuppe Owens - Sex & Disability Activist
45:37

About this episode...

Today we talk with Tuppy Owens and her work as a sex-positive activist and helping disabled individuals find their sexuality. But trust me, Tuppy has been a strong force in the UK and world sex and disability scene since the 70s. She has even been seen on stage performing burlesque to celebrate her birthdays... but you should listen to find out more about that...

A little about Tuppy...

Tuppy Owens was born in Cambridge. She gained a degree in zoology from Exeter University, and then worked in ecology in Africa and Trinidad. She settled in London and worked as a scientific administrator at the Natural Environment Research Council. Then, in the late 1960s, she established a sex education book publishing company, for which she wrote and published The Sex Maniac’s Diary successfully between 1972 and 1995, and which she operated as a thriving business from her Mayfair flat — for example, the 1975 Sex Maniac's Diary was launched in August 1974 with a reception at the Bristol Hotel in London which was reported on the following day in the Financial Times.

Tuppy Owens remains active in running Outsiders. At the same time, she also advises the promoter of the Sexual Freedom Ball to fund Outsiders, and the organizers of the fundraiser, The Erotic Awards, now called The Sexual Services and Entertainment Awards.

Owens is now the chair of the Sexual Freedom Coalition. Back in the 90s Owens worked campaigning with Prostitution Pride, parades through London, which was funded by Arcadia events in North London.

Owens has been working with the Bath Institute of Medical Engineering in the hope that they will be able to create sex toys that can be used by disabled people who, without them, cannot masturbate.

Owens will be the editor of a forthcoming website, The School of Sex for Disabled People, which is being created by sexually experienced disabled people and those who provide them with sexual services. She is currently writing her autobiography.

BCBC - Nugget - s2e019 - Julie Christensen - PTSD - Disability and Sexuality Accessibility Month
16:18

About this episode...

Julie Christensen is back in this episode and chats with Monkey and Miss Laura about PTSD as a form of disability and why it may impact people in their health, well being and sexual sense of well being.

To start, PTSD is defined as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.  This is a mental health condition that is triggered by exposure to a terrifying event, even a life-threatening event. Symptoms of PTSD may include avoidance, hypervigilance, being afraid of things, nightmares, flashbacks re-experiencing things, and feeling disconnected from others and even from yourself. There are of course more symptoms - these are just a few. There is also a complex PTSD that results from years of exposure to unhealthy relationships or sexual abuse or other situations. Some people are aware they have PTSD, and many others are not aware, even having repressed memories of the traumatic events that lead to PTSD.

About Julie...

Julie Christensen is a licensed marriage and family therapist and a frequent flier with the BCBC show. Julie is a therapist at It's Possible Therapy who specializes in:

  • Grief
  • Trauma
  • Mood Disorders
  • Anxiety Disorders
  • Spirituality
  • Holy Fire Reiki Healing

Show notes...

Julie goes into a few ways to identify PTSD within yourself and within others. These are only a few possibilities - please note that this is in no way a stand-in for seeking professional assistance. When looking in a sexual context, Julie suggests that your partner may notice things if you are suffering from PTSD - lack of enjoyment, orgasm, response, and more.

Monkey asked Julie about how someone can help a partner, friend, or loved one to identify and work with PTSD. She encourages communication between all the parties, offering couples therapy, taking online tests, and additional modes of communication.

PTSD was formerly identified only as associated with military experiences - although now it is much more widely identified as a real and serious issue. There are a lot more tools to identify problems and to treat PTSD. Julie is a big fan of EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. EMDR is a psychotherapy treatment that was originally designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories by applying bilateral stimulation to release memories and help rewrite those memories. This can take those memories from a traumatic rating of 10 down to a 0 and remove the trauma associated forever.

Other alternative treatments like LSD were addressed. LSD treatments were actually historically for PTSD until it was outlawed. This treatment is currently considered “outlawed” due to the legal status of LSD.

There are also many people that use alternative methods of BDSM to help deal with associated trauma, specifically around sexual trauma. Negotiation and being honest and open about experiences and a history of critical review in these situations to try to avoid further damage. Julie encourages people going along this path to be safe and open and extra aware of histories and what people may need.

Julie offers the advice of “Take it one day at a time, love yourself, and recognize you will probably not resolve this in a week or two so be patient. Get good help. If you are working with a therapist you do not like, get another one.”

BCBC - Podcast - s2e15 - Emily Wolinsky
59:00

In this episode...

While listening to this episode be prepared to connect with Emily in ways you never thought you could in a podcast. We talk with Emily about her life, disability, consent violations, her amazing Blogs, and so much more. She melted our hearts and I know she will do the same to you.

A little about Emily...

Emily Wolinsky is a driving force behind and President of NMD United, a peer-led and runs a non-profit organization that connects adults with neuromuscular disabilities (NMDs) to Independent Living Resources.

As part of her work for NMD United, Wolinsky led the Dear Julianna letter-writing campaign. In which adults who are living with lifelong disabilities write to disabled children in order to fight against the “better dead than disabled” stereotype. The project received national attention.

In recognition of her work, New Mobility honored Ms. Wolinsky as one of the six People of the Year in 2016 for her advocacy and activism efforts.

In addition to her work with NMD United, she currently works at Austin Community College as a Student Accessibility Services Specialist in Austin, Texas.

Ms. Wolinsky holds two masters' degrees in Counseling and Educational Administration from Prairie View A&M University; a secondary educator’s certification from The University of Texas at Austin; and a Bachelor’s degree in English from the Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.

Other activism:

Emily runs multiple websites and blogs which each serve their own purpose. CrippledBitch is a blog she uses to fight ableism “with a plastic keyboard instead of a sword.”

She also runs a website called MyOlmsteadRights which focuses on the ability of those with disabilities to afford at-home care and their independence.

About NMD United...

NMD United is a non-profit organization composed of adults living with neuromuscular disabilities. This peer-led organization will foster meaningful interactions and provide informational resources to increase self-direction while promoting independence.

In 2013, Emily began to develop this organization with five other adults from around the United States. In 2014, she was voted-in as Chairperson of the organization.

Dear Juliana Began thanks to a CNN article in which a 4-year old girl, who has Charcot-Marie Tooth disease (a progressive neuromuscular disease), deciding to choose the end of life care instead of going to the hospital the next time she gets sick.

At 7 years old, Emily was selected to be a poster child for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and became one of “Jerry’s Kids” in the MDA Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon.

Some sex workers are paid to engage in sex acts or sexually explicit behavior which involve varying degrees of physical contact with clients (prostitutes and some but not all professional dominants); pornography models and actors engage in sexually explicit behavior which are filmed or photographed. Phone sex operators have sexually-oriented conversations with clients, and do auditive sexual roleplay.

The month of April has been dedicated to understanding more about sex workers, some of the challenges within that varied industry, some of the dangers and to personalize and put a little bit of understanding into why so many people chose to move into that industry. We hope you join us as we explore a few of the facets of sex work – from the people involved, the choices and reasons behind their involvement, and so much more…

BCBC - Nugget - s2e017 - Michael - Sex Workers Month
15:25

About this episode...

In our final nugget for the April monthly topic of Sex workers, Miss Laura chats with Michael - a member of the kink community, a Shibari rigger, and someone who has worked on photo shoots in and around the sex work industry for many years. He also identifies as a wolf in our barnyard - believing these animals to amazing, social, and are protective and loyal in their packs. He has always respected wolves - knowing they do what is best for their family.

Side note: Shibari is intricate rope bondage using some traditional Japanese techniques and of course a few modern twists.

Michael considers himself to be a part of the sex worker community through his rigging for photo shoots, creating promotional pieces for cam girls and others who are working, as well as someone who has dated and is involved with several people who work in that industry.

He shares a few of his experiences with partners in the sex work industry. A commonly heard sentiment in many of our episodes across a range of topics, he cites that communication is a key in any relationship to making things work, especially when you are involved with someone working in the sex trade. He suggests that you need to be able to communicate clearly with them, especially since part of their job is to be intimate with others - to make sure you understand where you stand in their life and they are able to clearly communicate where you stand and what they need from you to support them. This is critical in dealing with any jealousy issues that can come up.

A little about Michael...

I've been a part of the BDSM community of the San Francisco Bay Area for a very long time. If you want background on my various kinks and fetishes, I can tell you that all of the stories will start with "So there was this girl..."

I have been a shibari rigger, working with rope and using it to bring accentuate the beauty of the human form for somewhere around ten years, and have trained with Two Knotty Boys and with Midori. I've taught shibari classes. I've tied for photo shoots and had my rope work find it's way into a magazine or two (including a horror magazine) and onto the front page of the now unfortunately defunct zivity.com.

Around seven years ago, "there was this girl" who had something of a fetish for hypnosis, and the erotic applications of it, so being quite smitten with her, as well as intrigued with hypnosis and fascinated with the human mind, I went off and got certified as a hypnotist. Well, the relationship didn't last, but hypnosis (especially its erotic and BDSM applications, but also the things that I could use it for to help those I cared about) kept my attention, became something of a passion of mine. I've gone so far as to seek certification as a clinical hypnotherapist.

I help with a quarterly Goth/Industrial dance club and BDSM dungeon down in Santa Cruz California called "House of Nox". While my housemates are either spinning a set at the turntables, doing a tarot card reading, or perhaps playing with someone on the spanking bench or St. Andrew's Cross, I can be found with my portable suspension frame, 700+ feet of rope, and various toys, tying people up or working them over with a violet wand. I really enjoy giving new people the chance to experience things that they have always wanted to try, but never had the opportunity or perhaps courage to go for before, and dip their toes into the wonderful and wild world of kink in a safe, sane, and consensual way.

A little about Raychell Anderson...
Rachel Anderson’s professional focus is to advocate for the human rights of people who use drugs, especially people who inject drugs (PWID), and people who work in the sex industry (PWSI) and to decrease and document the adverse consequences associated with drug use, especially injection drug use, and work in the sex industry through interventions and research. BCBC - Nugget - s2e015 - LJ Woolston - Sex Worker Month - LGBTQ Youth Advocate
20:47

About this episode...

Our second nugget for this month on sex workers is with LJ Woolston - an advocate, artist social worker. He works with LGBT youth - and often that means that youth who are involved in sex work, either through choice or for survival.  He is also the widower of Diana Hemingway - an amazing transgender sex worker, activist, and advocate for rights. He speaks to us a little bit about his work, Diana, and how he works to honor her legacy.

About LJ Woolston...

Landon "LJ" Woolston, MSW, is a youth worker, an advocate, artist, a queer and trans-Miami native, and a Point Foundation alumni. Through his own personal journey navigating social justice issues, LJ dedicated himself to using his privilege to interrupt oppression, standing alongside and uplifting the narratives of those who are most marginalized in our communities.

LJ has been working directly with LGBTQ youth experiencing homelessness in Miami for over four years. He also develops and delivers training for service providers all throughout Miami, training on topics such as LGBTQ competency, trans competency, supporting queer and trans youth in varied spaces (hospitals, shelters, schools, camps, etc.), and harm reduction approach for serving young people engaged in commercial or survival sex work.

Additionally, LJ uses one of his hobbies, photography, as a form of activism -- a means of sparking critical dialogue around body and sex positivity, gender, and race. His images of trans people and trans bodies have been published in several queer publications and The New Times, and he has had several local photography shows. LJ sees photography as a particularly powerful, radical medium for trans and queer folks to explore themselves, and to document their varied paths toward self-discovery, body-love, and self-love.

In December of 2016, LJ lost the love of his life, Diana Hemingway, a prominent queer and trans activist, sex worker, and sex worker rights advocate, when she died by suicide. Diana suffered from mental illness, experienced homelessness several times in her life, and was also discarded by multiple families on her journey toward being her most authentic self. Although an artist in several traditional mediums (photography, sculpture, jewelry making, writing), Diana considered sensuality to be her greatest art. Her hope was to channel a lifetime of triumph and suffering into her work, emotionally connecting the intersections of gender identity, sexuality, disability, feminism, and sex work, to advance understanding and empathy of the multiple forms of oppression that she and others faced.

LJ seeks to honor Diana through his work in youth homelessness, as well as in his volunteerism and activism. He is most committed to affirming and empowering queer youth. By equipping young people with community support, resources, and self-advocacy tools, LJ hopes to see the eventual elimination of the many barriers that prevent queer young people from living long, whole, authentic lives.

BCBC - Podcast - s2e12 Lady Elizabeth - ProDomme
49:16

About this episode...

Monkey and David explore the world of a ProDomme with Lady Elizabeth. What is a ProDomme? How does she fit into Sex Workers? I thought people that hired Prodommes just liked to get tied up and beaten? IT goes a lot deeper than that and Lady Elizabeth is a joy to talk to.

A little about Lady Elizabeth...

I’m deeply involved in BDSM as a passion, a lifestyle, a profession, and a topic for academic research. I’ve been a professional dominant since for over a decade. I currently own a private, beautifully-equipped dungeon in central Connecticut, perfectly located between New York City and Boston. Within the dungeon, my specialties include corporal punishment and corrective discipline, bondage, electrical play, medical scenarios, and many other deviations. I particularly enjoy teaching novices and couples about the diverse world of BDSM.

I also hold a PhD in Anthropology from an Ivy League university, where I specialized in the study of gender, sexuality, and language in BDSM communities. In my vanilla life, I offer consulting work with couples and individuals having communication difficulties.

BCBC - Nugget - s2e014 - Kalypso - Plus-size Webcam Model
15:30

About this Nugget...

In our first Nugget during Sex Workers month, we meet BbwKalypso or Kaly. Some consider a camgirl or WebCam Model to be part of the sex worker community while others don't. Many people dive into webcam modeling but Kaly has found it because of something different she was looking for in her life. What was it? Listen and find out. But she still faces some of the issues and concerns about being a webcam model that many others do. Enjoy this very cool conversation with BbwKalypso.

A little about Kalypso...

BbwKalypso is a plussize webcam model who has been performing online for over five years. She is in her forties and weighs 300 lbs. Though many people begin doing webcam work for financial reasons, Kaly stumbled into the industry while working on her body image and it's turned into a great hobby and an outlet for her exhibitionist tendencies.
When not doing webcam shows Kaly works in the tech industry and spends time with her husband and family.

Where to see Kalypso...

BCBC - Podcast - s2e11 - Kristen DiAngelo - SWOP
54:00

About this episode...

We welcome Kristen DiAngelo back to talk about her work and efforts to make sex workers safer here in Sacramento and around the world. We learn a lot about how sex work is managed and experienced from different areas around the world that Kristen has visited. This is an eye-opening podcast and Kristen is doing amazing caring work.

About Kristen...

Kristen DiAngelo of the Sacramento Sex Workers Outreach Project joins the Brown Chicken Brown Cow Show for her second time as a guest and we were really excited to have her back.  And so you know - small spoiler but her barnyard animal is the dog - so she can alert her charges to predators and protect the barnyard. We thought that was a rather awesome addition to the barnyard!

Kristen is the Executive Director and Co-Founder of SWOP Sacramento.  She came to this point in her life has worked as both a consensual sex worker and as a victim of sex trafficking.  She started working in the sex trade at a very young age, and has moved to helping people still in the trade - through providing resources and support to those in need, by being an activist and advocate in the world and to the government, and through outreach in many different parts of the world where sex trafficking and laws and people have a much older or more challenged framework.

Each SWOP Chapter is free to customize their offering of solutions to meet the local needs.  All chapters fall under the national SWOP umbrella (http://www.new.swopusa.org/). In Sacramento, a number of services are offered, including:

  • Education
  • Public Outreach and Speaking
  • Offer a short-term safe house
  • Comprehensive case management for those in need (including medical, counseling, drug rehabilitation, job training, and more)
  • Street Outreach to let people know there is support

SWOP Sacramento believes in the approach of Harm Reduction. Because of this, they work with the medical profession, from helping teach at medical school to outreach and collaborations beyond. They have presented at conferences like the Harm Reduction Coalition (http://harmreduction.org/conference/).

BCBC - Nugget - s2e011 - Julie Christensen LMFT
18:44

About this episode...

We have a packed Nugget interview with Julie Christensen LMFT (Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist) from 'It’s Possible Therapy'. Monkey explores what an LMFT is and how therapists like Julie can help with many issues including trauma, grief, PTSD, and so much more.

We hit a lot of issues and topics in a very short time and could have talked for hours. Like I said, we need to bring her back...

About Julie...

Julie Christensen – Licensed Marriage And Family Therapist, MFC#48350

While in Atlanta, Julie maintained a private practice and worked as a counselor for an Atlanta based psychiatric hospital.

Having worked as part of a multidisciplinary team, Julie met and maintains good working relationships with psychiatrists in the community.

BCBC - Podcast - s2e9 - Dr Barbara Chubak
55:05

In this Episode...

We are excited to have Dr. Barbara Chubak from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai talk to us about sexual health. WOW! Are we now talking to amazing doctors on this show? I digress, Dr. Chubak gives us things to consider when talking with a urologist about your sexual health, her work, and a really funny or uncomfortable story, your call. Dr. Chubak has also offered her website to allow our listeners to reach out and ask her a question... just use this link and let her know you heard her on the BCBC Podcast:  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScnyEQ9R6vLGpD-fVEKYZimloqbTuPBARDz35ePlKCmXXnMvg/viewform?usp=sf_link

Here's a little about Dr. Chubak...

Barbara Chubak, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Urology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. In addition to providing general urologic care, she specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of sexual dysfunction for all patients, regardless of sex, gender, orientation, or congenital condition. She is particularly committed to addressing the sexual health needs of women and other populations who have been historically marginalized and underserved, while also attending to the voiding dysfunctions and pain syndromes with which they are frequently comorbid.

Dr. Chubak received her medical degree from Johns Hopkins, while also earning a master’s degree in the history of medicine. Her residency training at Montefiore Medical Center-Albert Einstein College of Medicine was bracketed by fellowships in bioethics and sexual medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. Her clinical and research pursuits are informed by all of these disciplines, to ensure care that is culturally competent and respectful of differing perspectives without compromising reliance on scientific evidence.

In addition to this academic training, Dr. Chubak is certified in prosthetic surgery by the Sexual Medicine Society of North America and in vulvoscopy by the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health. As a member of these and other professional organizations, she is active in medical education and peer-review both in the United States and abroad and has been recognized by the American Urological Association for excellence in research.

Currently, Dr. Chubak’s research is focused on cross-cultural comparisons in care for sexual dysfunction, and on expanding patient-centered outcomes to include intimate partners. She is also concerned by the scarcity of scientific evidence available to support some of the most popular and expensive energy, stem-cell, and cytokine-based therapies currently in use for treatment of female sexual dysfunction. As a clinician, she is dedicated to providing safe, effective, and patient-empowering medical and surgical care.

For more information about Dr. Chubak and to provide her your feedback, please click here:  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScnyEQ9R6vLGpD-fVEKYZimloqbTuPBARDz35ePlKCmXXnMvg/viewform?usp=sf_link

BCBC - Nugget - s2e009 - Nursing with Jeanene
20:27

Hey Gang, Monkey Here!!

We are kicking off our first Nugget in March as we start the discussion around Legal, Financial, Medical and Social Concerns for "Non-Normative" relationships. We have some AMAZING guests lined up!  This month will address the concerns of polyamory, non-traditional cohabitation, quads, queer households, trans adults, and even parents of gender queer youths and help you consider where to find resources from people in their communities for things like medical concerns, financial advice, sex and mental health, education, and even how to find a great life coach to work on all the things. We talk with professionals, doctors, nurses, teachers, and lawyers who work in financial, family, and other legal issues.

This week we meet Jeannene

Jeanene is an experienced nurse with years of knowledge and interesting stories to share. Here we talk about what to know and what to share with your medical team. Should you tell them everything? Can being embarrassed actually harm you? And we hear about more unusual stories.

Jeanene is a delight to talk with and so sweet. I wish I would have had her as my nurse many times through the years.

BCBC - Vodcast (audio only) - s2e1 - Looking Back Moving Forward
01:29:31

This is the AUDIO ONLY version of our Looking Back and Moving Forward Vodcast. BCBC on YouTube

Welcome to the January 2018 vodcast for the Brown Chicken Brown Cow Show and Podcast!

We are really excited about the show this month – we think it is our best show yet! (Of course, we always think that). This is our month looking back at our first year together, and looking at where we are going moving forward. We started the BCBC Podcast and Show just a few months ago and have been growing stronger ever since.

The BCBC Podcast The BCBC Nuggets are just mini podcast! If you have been following us for the month of January, you will see what had a full month of podcasts and nuggets. We spoke with Miss Laura – airing the first two podcasts that were ever recorded (and not necessarily meant for release) as we experimented with our settings. We spoke with the Professor and Madame to understand a little more about what happens behind the scenes so that we as hosts can look and sound amazing and like we know what we are doing. We spoke with some of our previous guests and our sponsors. We also invited a few of our listeners, our Super Fans, to give us their thoughts on our Nuggets.

For our Vodcast, we decided we would interview each other… get to know a bit more about each of our hosts, and why we got involved with the show. We invited a few of our previous entertainment guests back on the show with a song for your entertainment, and we wrap up with a behind the scenes blooper reel showing a few of our more entertaining moments.

A Timecode Discussion of our Vodcast, Of course, we want you to watch the entire Vodcast (if you prefer to see us all on video, head over to our YouTube channel: BCBC on YouTube ) but if you want to skip to a certain part, we are happy to help you out.

We kick off the month of love with our voyage through Polyamory. We will be visiting with individuals, couples, podcasters, and authors this month's review of what loving more looks like.

In the coming days and weeks, we will interview Cunning Minx from the Podcast Polyamory Weekly and Cooper Beckett from the podcast LIfe on the Swingset & Polyamory. We have authors and speakers like Pepper Mint, a polyamory fixture in the San Francisco community and we hear from Kevin Patterson about his new book and how to help create a more welcome and diversified community.

In this Nugget episode...

...we meet Ivy. Ivy is a polyamory and KINK community leader, built a discussion group and helps foster understanding and growth in others on their polyamory path. We talk about family, polyamory, KINK, and more. She is really engaging and also shares what type of Barnyard animal she would like to be.

BCBC - Vodcast - s1e4 - Kink BDSM & Comedian Auntie Vice
02:06:41

This is our fourth BCBC Vodcast Show (this is an AUDIO ONLY Podcast episode, the Vodcast originally aired on YouTube Oct 30, 2017, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YV19stHqlXg&t=138s)

Kink (a sexual taste and sometimes fetish) and BDSM (an overlapping abbreviation of Bondage and Discipline (BD), Dominance and Submission (DS), Sadism and Masochism (SM)), are an expression of sexual freedom and for many sexual or power control and exchange.

NOTE: That is way oversimplifying the complex world of BDSM that is sometimes misunderstood and other times shunned for being abnormal. In actuality, it turns out that Americans are far more into BDSM than the rest of the world seems to be.

According to a 2005 survey by Durex, 36 percent of adults in the United States use masks, blindfolds and bondage tools during sex. So, if you have done any of these things... welcome and come on in... If you are interested in learning more... the door is open for you as well.

In this episode wrapping up our first month on KINK and BDSM, Monkey and Laura explore a couple of small corners of the BDSM Scene. Intro to BDSM with Summer who hosts a newbie BDSM MUNCH with her Master John.

BCBC Podcast S2E1 Monkey and Laura
37:30

We begin our month of Looking Back and Moving Forward, a review of where we have been as a show and talk about where we are going with listeners, past guests, our sponsors, and of course the BCBC crew.

This episode was our very first two recordings to test out equipment with the Professor and just talk about things we might not have much detail about. We were green, uninformed, and still having some fun while doing it. The show is rough but it shows you how far we have come...

Thanks for listening,

Monkey

BCBC Nugget with Loving More's Robyn Trask s1e007
13:20

Organisations like Loving More are educating and supporting the Polyamory community. We talked with Robyn Trask, the Executive Director of Loving More. We find out more about polyamory, what Loving more does for people searching for help with polyamory and ethical non-monogamy.

More about Loving More

Loving More® is a national 501c3 nonprofit organization, educational website, online community and magazine dedicated to support and education of polyamory and polyamorous issues. Loving More has been supporting the polyamorous community both nationally and internationally for more than thirty years and a charitable nonprofit since 2006.

More about Robyn Trask

Robyn is the Executive Director of Loving More Nonprofit, a national leader for polyamory awareness, polyamory counselor, workshop facilitator and writer. Raised in Colorado and Texas, Robyn realized at 24 that she simply was not monogamous. She decided to be honest and ask for open relationships even if it meant being alone. Her first marriage of 18 years with one of her high-school sweeties was open, though it was not until nine years into her marriage that she discovered there was a term, polyamory, and an organization that really fit her relationships style, Loving More Magazine. She founded a local Denver polyamory discussion group with some close friends and lovers in 1998. Robyn studied biology, chemistry and animal science at Texas A&M. She worked in the construction industry as an estimator, owned a top wedding and catering business, is a professional photographer and founded New Visions Center for personal growth where she taught Sacred Sex and other classes.  In 2003 she attended and presented at Loving More Conference retreats on both the East and West coast. Robyn purchased Loving More in the fall of 2004 because she did not want to see this great community resource falter. She quickly realized with the technology and changing publishing industry that Loving More was not viable as a for-profit business or as a magazine and began the process of Loving More Magazine becoming national nonprofit for polyamory awareness. Since 2004, Robyn has worked to expand media awareness of polyamory through press releases and appearances in numerous articles, radio and TV shows including Montel, Lisa Ling and Michael Baisden. Robyn and Loving More were instrumental in the formation of Polyamory Leadership Network. A national speaker and advocate for polyamory she has been a featured speaker at conferences, taught at universities and been a keynote speaker. Robyn has been openly polyamorous for 25 years, raising three children in a polyamorous family.
