Even Eddie Van Halen admits that he was not the first to make use of the now famous two hand tapping technique. Steve Hackett of Genesis claims to be the first recorded tapper. In the mid 1980's, shortly after the release of The Final Cut, Roger Waters attempted to legally disband Pink Floyd. Thank the maker, he did not succeed in this endeavor. What he DID succeed in was alienated the band's other leader and kicking himself out of his own band. On today's Rockin' Rant I dicuss this cauntionary tale and what lessons can be learned from it.

Do your part to keep guitar driven rock ALIVE... join Loudini LIVE! Go to http://LouLombardiMusic.com/InnerCircle to find out how you can be a part of our LIVE online audience and get access to exclusive music and video!
With a deceptively simple sound of an old country or blues record, his sound is at once raw and vulnerable, but distilled through a caustic brilliant prism of sound. Connors freshly weaves a view of emotion and experience; lyrical branches wound densely in and out of darkness and diffused light. His own raw and vulnerable sound journey can do any listener a great service. And if you've ever feel the limb snap, it may just be his dry wit.

From his teen years, drifting the fringes of various NYU independent music festivals and on to places such as CBGB's, Greg's path led him to Atlanta, Georgia, creating deliberate vibrations at such local favorites as the 40 Watt Club, in Athens, and the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, and then back to NYC again, with various stops along the way

Greg is making music currently in metro NYC. He has awakened audiences for the likes of John Mayer, Joseph Arthur, Cat Power, Smoke, Songs; Ohia, Palace Brothers, Joan as Police Woman and Vic Chesnutt.

In 2006 Scared Records released Greg's 5th Studio album,
"Here, There and Anymore", Produced by friend and studio wizard, Joseph Arthur.

Recorded with Bass player and recording engineer, Scott Fragala, Connors' 9th studio album, "Home Made Compass" will be available on March, 3rd 2018.

'Greg Connors’ trademark simple guitar licks and detached alienated, lonely voice are coupled with a scary command of the English language. He is the Howard Finster of music, painting vivid abstract images with his words and guitar.”

Taylor and the Apes are based in NYC and have developed a loyal following and a reputation for their superb songwriting and dynamic, raw, exciting live shows. Led by singer/guitarist Taylor Elliott, the Apes have developed a unique sound, influenced by every decade of rock n' roll's existence: '50's doo wop harmonies, thick Rhodes/Hammond keys of the '60's, '70's grand guitar solos, the big drum sounds of the '80's, the '90's guitar crunch, all wrapped together with current, yet timeless lyrics. Elliott's singing is direct, yet humble; and he sounds somewhere between Paul Westerberg and Tom Petty. After a busy year and gathering an every-growing fan base, the apes have just released their debut album, american livin'.

Across The Board (ATB) is an award-winning Canadian alt pop/rock band of multi-instrumentalist musicians with over 300 Youtube videos, debut album, a concept EP and now a second full length album, SONIC BOOM, slated for release May 4th, 2018, who seamlessly combine creative talents to push their pop-rock sounds to the edge of the rock 'n roll envelope with harmonious power vocals and catchy electric guitar riffs. The lead single, “Sonic Boom” reached #4 on the iTunes Canada Rock chart on September 11, 2018.

Forged from garage jams and basement Youtube sessions, “Across The Board” finally broke out of the internet box with their debut album “Jane On Fire” in 2016, earning the band critical acclaim for the single “Indifference” which also became their first track to hit the FM radio waves and win an international independent music award.

ATB's second record, the EP "AMENDS", was released in 2017 as a concept album centered around the theme of facing one's demons and resentments in order to break free of the restraints of past mistakes. The first single,” Don’t Drag Me Down” was featured on the International Women's Day website, and continues to receive airplay on US College Radio, internet and terrestrial FM radio in Canada and internationally including Australia, South America, Asia and Europe.

ATB was featured at Canadian Music Week in 2017, and toured across Canada from coast-to-coast by rail to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. ATB also toured Newfoundland and Vancouver in the summer of 2017 with the EP AMENDS and will be touring Canada again this summer with their newest full length album SONIC BOOM.

NEW ALBUM RELEASE MAY 4TH, 2018:

As a lifelong seeker of truth, Kevin Bianchi has spent his entire musical career embracing and wrestling with the mystery of life and love in song. This has been exemplified by his time as the lead singer and songwriter for the indie rock band, the Chestertons. Having achieved regional success with the single 'Coast Road' and dynamic performances opening for artists such as James McCartney, he now begins a new journey with the formation of Vanishing Shores.

"The need to reach out and connect with those around us has never been greater," states Bianchi. It is this realization that inspires and informs each song by Vanishing Shores. From the opening of 'In Between' to the closing notes of 'Blurred' on their self-titled EP, the listener is invited to become a part of the story, not as a stranger but as a fellow traveler who is loved and accepted. The answers may not be found. Everything known may collapse at any moment, but 'even still, I won't let you go.' This promise, in all of its emotional complexity, is the true vision of Vanishing Shores.

Influenced by diverse artists such as Neil Finn and Elvis Costello, Vanishing Shores is not 'business as usual' but a band that pursues beauty wherever it may lead. Just like their musical inspirations, Vanishing Shores strive to deliver passionate, well-crafted rock and roll in each and every performance. As the band continues to develop, each song points to a future that is filled with limitless potential, founded on the power of music and the community it creates.

Drawing from Austin Wasielewski's (guitars, vocals) familiarity of psychedelic/acid rock, rap, R&B, folk/Americana, the sound is brought together by Tred Litely (drums, vocals) pop-punk, funk, indie-rock, math rock and fusion pulls, while Ryan D. Lee (bass) is a master of all things 80s, 90s and present. Together their lyrics seek to address the turmoil we experience every day by virtue of living in a modern world, but specifically a modern world so torn up by connecting troves of people who still feel disconnected.

Meeting at the community based rehearsal space Music City in San Francisco, the trio immediately found a musical connection. Their upcoming EP which pays homage to the place that brought them together is out this Fall. With the help of their community, they are setting their sights on bringing their music and message to the world....and we're eager to hear more

Taken from their upcoming record, the band will have you head over heels after first listen. Until very recently, the different members of this ensemble cast were working separately, settling with projects only half-fulfilling the addiction that they all shared. It was only when their lives started overlapping did they realize they would eventually come together to handcraft a sonic, melodic miasma of songs spanning over two full length albums. At the heart of Frantic Romantic is a love for a 90’s culture that's been swept away with yesteryear. It's that unknown band you hear in a rundown back alley venue. It's that album you pick up at the record store and spin on the car ride home—uninterrupted. That’s the culture Frantic Romantic longs for and the community they breathe life back into.

Love Stallion, Aaron Hart invites you to take a ride on his rock 'n roll steed

Love Stallion storms the music scene with original glamorous hard rock, sure to get your heart racing and ears pounding. Power riffs, memorable hooks, and electric flash capture the nostalgia of years gone by, bringing a fresh punch of rock & roll back to the universe in proper style.

Love Stallion began as an experiment; a spur of the moment co-write of the song "Big Rock Radio" by Aaron Hart & Crayton Huntly (aka Rob McLemore) outside a concert hall in the fall of 2013. Inspired by the "big rock" sound of the 70s & 80s, rockstars David Lee Roth & Freddie Mercury, and bands like Van Halen, Kiss, and Def Leppard, the duo enlisted the help of industry pros Dr Scott Martin & Kate Emerich, "Aaron Hart w/ Crayton Huntly" played their first show May 1st, 2015 at The Walnut Room Denver to a small crowd of friends.

As the crowd grew, so did the flash & flare of the live show. With the addition of Aero X (aka Aero Marquez) joining on bass, the band became recognized for their high energy live performance, flamboyant wardrobes of sequins, spandex and leather, and their signature Sexy Disco Legs.

The first video single "Slow Release" was released in March of 2018. It stormed to #1 on the IndiMusicTV charts and reached #4 on the iTunes Canada rock charts! Love Stallion's 'Unforgettable Ride' was produced by Steve Avedis (Tony Bennett,*NSYNC) at Colorado Sound Studios and was released on June 2nd 2018.

Growing up in Eastern Ontario (South of Ottawa), Canada, Cory M. Coons has been passionate about music since his early teen years, and he began learning guitar and bass, which led him to crafting his own melodies and musical ideas, while still in High School. Shortly after, he would begin travelling and performing in a variety of cover bands throughout the mid-to-late 90's, in both Ontario and the Southeastern United States.

Now, Cory has just released a brand new melodic rock Cd/Album "The Long Road Home", in early 2018. It has been produced by Multi-Gold & Platinum veteran music producer, Ron Nevison, (Heart, Bad Company, Damn Yankees, Survivor, Styx, Night Ranger.) Additional tracking/overdubs, and driving force on guitar on the new record is guitarist/engineer Marc D. Muir.

Cory was nominated at the "Producer's Choice Honors", (formerly Los Angeles Music Awards), in the "Rock Artist Of The Year" category for 2015. He was the the 2014 recipient of the Producer's Choice Honor for "Studio Album Of The Year," for his Independent E.p "Share A Little Time". Additional nominations also included "Male Singer/Songwriter" and "Record Of The Year". Cory's influences are a collection of various genres like melodic rock and roots-rock, blended with hints of country-rock.

Cory is a respected freelance guitar instructor in the local St. Lawrence Seaway Valley and at Rock My House Music Centre in Kemptville, ON. Cory has opened and performed alongside such treasured national Canadian artists like April Wine, Kim Mitchell, Glass Tiger and David Wilcox.

The band is currently sharing their enticing new lyric video for "The Misprint," which has us head over heels immediately. Taken from their upcoming record "Pageant Wave," out later this year, this is the first glimpse we have into the world of Horsehead for 2018.

Horsehead's Jon Brown of the group says of the track:

“My brother and I used to take trips together; drinking vacations if you will. One of those trips was the inspiration for the song. It’s not autobiographical per se (it’s quite embellished) but we all are searching for something and screwing up along the way.”

A little reminiscent of artists such as Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Rolling Stones, Neil Young and Jason Isbell, the group bring a unique and eclectic sound to the table that is very much their own. "The Misprint," dives in deep to the sound of the band with powerful instrumentation and honest lyricism that drives the track home.

A little bit Country, a little bit Rock n' Roll, the group takes the reigns and heads into glory on the new track....our ears are eager for the upcoming record in tow.

OVER A DECADE OF SPLITTING ATOMS, HORSEHEAD NOW SETS THEIR SITES ON ASSEMBLING THEM ALL OVER AGAIN. THIS TIME, THE LOW-END LAB COATS FILLED BY STEVE CHILES (TEST TUBES) AND RICKY TUBB (BEAKER FILLING), BUNSEN BURNER DUTIES FULFILLED BY KEVIN WADE INGE ALL WHILE JON BROWN SCRAWLS THE FORMULAS. MOST THINK TANKS CAN'T MAKE IT PAST 2 THEOREMS, YET HORSEHEAD IS PREPARING THEIR SIXTH DISPATCH. DANCE AND SING, BUT DON'T LET THE SQUIRRELS SEE YOU SMILE. WAVE, IT MAY BE LOVE.

My name is Bruce Grimm. People call me Grubb from an old high school nickname.

I'd like to mention my first band Arch Rival (Eastern Version) and that three songs on this CD are from them. 13,Daddy and Mr.Magic

The newest line up of MOS had some serious health and family problems and couldn't continue. DRUMMER almost died twice. Heart problems

I would rather not mention studio where music was recorded. It was only about the money to them and had no concern about what I actually wanted.

Studio where I recorded vocals was awesome really helpful and toward what I wanted.

James Lee Baker finding the balance between folk and Americana

Do your part to keep guitar driven rock ALIVE... join Loudini LIVE! Go to http://LouLombardiMusic.com/InnerCircle to find out how you can be a part of our LIVE online audience and get access to exclusive music and video!

A classically trained musician, James Lee Baker fuses influences from acoustic singer-songwriters like David Mead, Ellis Paul, John Gorka, Gregory Alan Isakov, Bob Dylan, and Slaid Cleaves. He embraces open tunings to create an unconventional but welcoming sound and timbre to his playing. Trained briefly by Richard Gilewitz, a renowned fingerstyle guitar player, James Lee’s fingerstyle guitar playing is rich and melodic, pulling listeners into memorable motifs and atmospheres.

In 2017, Baker released a Texas-inspired full-length project called “Home Again.” Harnessing his experience in technology, Baker recruited talented studio session musicians, accessing performers from Los Angeles, Canada, The United Kingdom, and Denver. “Home Again” is a Country-flavored Americana album, rich with instrumentation like dobro, lap steel, fiddle, and harmonica.

In March, he released an EP of Folk/Americana songs called The Canadian River. The single of the same title placed #23 on the FolkDJ radio charts in April of 2018, and the song “Two Cageless Birds” went on to be selected for the John O’Hara Songwriting Performance Grant.

James has played at several prominent venues including the Whiskey A Go Go in Los Angeles, The Fox Theater in Boulder, and Swallow Hill and The Walnut Room in Denver.

Gestures & Sounds is a one-stop shop for a great time. Their authentic
compositions are raw and evoke real feelings, mostly because they don’t know
how to be any other way. Live performances are a rollercoaster of up and higher.
After high school, best friends Erik, Brian and Jory left Wisconsin to pursue film
careers. Their cramped Los Angeles apartment spawned late-night muted jam
sessions that put them on a new course. With their sights set on starting a band,
they quickly scooped up Jeremy as their fourth best friend and drummer. And so
they began their love lives as Gestures & Sounds.

Warmth in sound and lyrics is a given with these guys. From cozy and swooning
to top-of-the-lungs raging. In tune with each other, the crowd, and anyone
wearing flannel at any given moment in the world, G&S are equal parts
melodically innovative and lyrically wrenching.

Born in Phoenix, AZ, a gemini, Cooper’s first love was lawn sprinklers. At the age of 6 he assembled his first above ground sprinkler system with pvc pipe, strong smelling waterproof glue, Toro© brand sprinklers and possibly a little help from his father. Changing light bulbs was also an early hobby. He was punished more than once for flicking bulbs within his reach, trying to burn them out. Happily by adolescence music had mostly replaced this destructive habit. Jeremiah Green’s drumming on early Modest Mouse records inspired him to get behind a kit. Being too scared to stand up on stage and read his poetry by itself inspired him to start songwriting. He played in Tucson, AZ based post punk band Overcast Off from 2009 -2012 while attending the University of Arizona. Then, to avoid a dead end job, he moved across the country to Somerville, MA where he learned how to make lattes and have 30 second conversations with no awkward pauses. Hosting a weekly music night at his cafe for 5 years made him a familiar face in the local music community. He released You Didn’t Know Me, a lyrically driven indie rock record, in 2016. A completely DIY local release, no effort was made to promote the record beyond friends and hometown fans. Rabid Underdogs will be his second full length record and it finds Cooper widening his ambitions. Recorded over a 2 year period of short sessions at the Soul Shop in Medford, MA, and produced by Elio DeLuca (Titus Andronicus), it was funded entirely by slinging coffee.

Nita Strauss, Steps boldly into her solo career after years as a Side Woman

Do your part to keep guitar driven rock ALIVE... join Loudini LIVE! Go to http://LouLombardiMusic.com/InnerCircle to find out how you can be a part of our LIVE online audience and get access to exclusive music and video!

Los Angeles born guitarist Nita Strauss has become a force to be reckoned with in the music world, dazzling audiences across the US, UK, Europe, South America, Asia, Australia and Africa. Most fans will recognize Nita as Alice Cooper’s touring guitarist of the past 4 years, but she has also played with R&B star Jermaine Jackson, early MTV darlings Femme Fatale, video game supergroup Critical Hit and popular tribute band The Iron Maidens. Her skill, exuberant stage presence and love for all things about her instrument have earned her a stellar reputation in the music industry and endorsements including Ibanez Guitars, Marshall Amplification, DiMarzio pickups, Monster Energy and more.

2018 has been a banner year for Nita. In January she was officially announced as the first ever female Ibanez signature artist with her own model, the Ibanez JIVA. She also released her signature pickups, the DiMarzio Pandemonium. April saw Nita playing WWE Superstar Shinsuke Nakamura’s entrance music at Wrestlemania in New Orleans in front of an audience of 78,000 fans and millions streaming worldwide, and in the same month she launched a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign for her debut solo record Controlled Chaos. The campaign reached its goal in two hours, doubled it by the end of the day, tripled the following day and ended up over 800% funded. Nita produced the record herself and did the majority of the engineering, as well as playing all the guitars and bass on the record. After the record was competed, Nita signed with Sumerian Records to release and distribute the album worldwide. After finishing out the Alice Cooper tour cycle, Nita will immediately hit the road supporting Controlled Chaos alongside modern guitar virtuoso Angel Vivaldi.

Nita has been featured on the covers of many worldwide print magazines and on dozens of albums, trailers, and soundtracks, including Heroes Of The Storm (Blizzard) and Grammy-nominated Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (Konami/ Platinum Games); and is the author of the Guitar World column “Like A Hurricane”. Nita was also the official in-house guitarist for the LA KISS, the arena football team owned by Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons of KISS. She is one of the most sought after clinicians in the industry and has done extensive clinic tours across multiple continents. Her consistent touring schedule has shown her to play in front of over a million audience members per year consistently for the past several years. Nita is also extremely passionate about health and fitness, and uses her wide social media reach to inspire and educate people about maintaining a healthy lifestyle while traveling on tour.

Nita’s debut solo album Controlled Chaos will be available worldwide November 16 through Sumerian Records.

Amie Penwell, Music is Cheaper than Therapy!
20:48

Do your part to keep guitar driven rock ALIVE... join Loudini LIVE! Go to http://LouLombardiMusic.com/InnerCircle to find out how you can be a part of our LIVE online audience and get access to exclusive music and video!

Amie Penwell music is alternative, piano pop, with enough soul to dip it's foot into alt. country and gospel, joining the likes of Ray LaMontagne, Annie Lennox, Melissa Etheridge, and Peter Gabriel.

I believe all of us are trying to better navigate and understand our roles, plights, masks, defenses, and reactions to a world in an increasingly, desperate need to experience more of ourselves in these confines, real or imagined. Giving voice to our own truths, our realities, our power, our fear of that power, and the paradox of the need to admit powerlessness before true change proceeds. I’ve spent the last few years working on a collection of songs that came out of conversations I had, and experiences I’ve shared, with women of diverse ethnic, economic and religious backgrounds. With the help of my collaborators, that collection has become my new record, Windows. It’s an intimate, firsthand look into the lives of nine women on nine different journeys. Each song is a portrait of individual and collective exploration through acceptance, power, will, humility, denial, willingness, faith, surrender, and freedom. The ultimate goal of this work is to stimulate conversations with one another, to help each other and the upcoming generations be more awake, objective, vocal, and free. To walk with one another through the sometimes brutal inventory of facing of ourselves, through the society we find ourselves in.

My main objective as an artist is to focus on what the moment has to teach me, to extract truth, the lesson from the beastly, the beautiful, and every ordinary passing in between. My experience has made clear to me that the more honest I am with myself, the more connected I can be with others. I believe there is no work worth sharing that won't at least try to be of service to another. With this in mind, when I began working on Windows, the songs were in charge the whole way through. They arrived one by one like premonitions pushing and pulling against each other. The first one pulled me out on a rainy night to catch Maia Sharp (Bonnie Raitt, Dixie Chicks, Art Garfunkel) live at a show in Berkeley CA. As soon as I heard Maia sing her song Underneath, I knew I wanted to write with her. I worked up the courage to send my song “Dogfight On The Moon” This led to my sending the first iPhone recording of “Window” about a successful executive woman in the middle of a meeting for a moment baring witness to the stark contrast of reality right outside the window. I remember standing in the middle of a playground watching 5-year-olds at work listening to the way she changed some phrasing at the end of “Window.” I knew it was special. Maia sent along a verse, chorus and melody for a title she’d been kicking around. It was "Noticing Place.” a song about a middle-aged woman realizing what she is allowing herself to become. I sent back “This Ain’t Happening To You,” an alt-country song about a woman in her late 30’s diagnosed with MS expressing how angry she is at everyone telling her what to do and how to feel when all she wants is to be pissed off. Lastly, we wrote “Angels In The Sand” about an older woman who has reached a place of seeing the spectrum of her experiences both joyful and at times horrific and how they have made up the mosaic of her life. It felt like an effortless songwriting tennis match—or like having a new pen pal. The remaining songs I wrote alone. To raise enough funds to begin, I set out to do a small crowdfunding campaign. After a first go of recording the record, I decided I needed to set them aside and approach the work more organically. Songs can sound perfect, but not feel right. I took another big gamble. I booked six days at Tiny Telephone Recording in San Francisco to record and mix. I will be forever grateful to John Vanderslice (founder and owner of TT) for building his version of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, for maintaining an affordable creative oasis for DIY musicians to work in the midst of one of the most expensive cities on the planet. Partnering up with Engineer, Multi-Instrumentalist and Arranger Adam Hirsch, (Ex Eye, Sam Amidon). Drummer Jason Slota, (The Mountain Goats, John Vanderslice) Bassist Matt Penwell, Guitarist Jeri Jones, (Blame Sally) Jeff Oster (Will Ackerman, Deepak Chopra) on Trumpet and Flugel Horn, Pianist Adam Rossi (Luce, Brad Brooks), Cellist Marissa Dietze, and myself on piano, Rhodes, pedal organ, vocals. Over four days, we recorded nine songs on analog tape, leaving the last two to mix. I later re-recorded my song “Mercy” about a young woman who has had faith but lost it, with producer Adam Rossi for Notes4Hope, a breast cancer benefit compilation and decided to add it to the record. Finishing up one of the tracks “Unstoppable” with my long-time collaborator, Drew Pearce, and engineer, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Gawain Matthews (guitar, organ, bass) about woman willing to stand in her full unedited strength, calling on other women to unite in mutual respect, to stand together in the face of everything. The song immediately caught the ear of Director Windy Borman, making it the credit song for her film Mary Janes The Women Of Weed. Lastly, I called on Jim Greer (Foster The People, Yoko Ono) to mix Unstoppable and Window, and master the record. I was raised in Massachusetts by an Irish/Italian family the youngest of four siblings, all avid music lovers. My upbringing was full of religion, poverty, love and the savior of stereos blasting the likes of The Police, U2, Van Halen, Rush, Journey, Prince, Pavarotti, Kris Kristofferson, and Fleetwood Mac, among many others. My core influences are Peter Gabriel, Radiohead, and Prince. My underground hit single, “Mercy,” was featured in the award-winning 2012 documentary, The Eyes of Thailand, which was narrated by Ashley Judd. In 2013, my EP Under City Lights was featured on Season 2 of Web series “Bloomers” and The Ask BonBon Show. In 2015, I was a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Contest (ISC) in the Adult Album Alternative category for my song “Dogfight On The Moon”. In 2016, my song “Somewhere The Sky Is Blue” with Grammy Award-winning Producer Ricky Kej, in the Dominica Scorsese film Almost Paris.

Robert Berry opens up about his friendship with the late Keith Emerson

Robert Berry has managed to survive in the treacherous minefield that is the music business and flourished as a performer, songwriter and producer. It seems he's done it all. While he may be best known as the vocalist/bass player in the ELP spinoff, 3, with Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer, Berry impressive list of credits include a stint fronting Ambrosia, and long running affiliations with Alliance, December People, and the Greg Kihn Band.

Berry has released 5 solo albums, contributed to a number of high-profile tribute albums and has an impressive track record in the studio.

He grew up in a musical family in what would become Northern California’s Silicon Valley. It didn’t take long before he appropriated a Vox Continental organ from his father’s music store. By the time he was a freshman in high school, his group had released a single that went on to become a regional favorite. Although he denies it, according to his school mates, Berry was known as his school’s first full-fledged rock star. His bands became solid fixtures on the Bay Area college and club circuit, where they worked constantly. It was during this period that his interest in multi-track recording blossomed. Legend has it, Berry somehow finagled the very first Teac four-track recorder to arrive in the valley. It wasn’t long before he had written and recorded an experimental twenty-two song ‘rock opera’. As his quest for knowledge grew he managed to snag a part-time position as ‘assistant everything’ person at a busy San Jose recording studio. By the time he was a senior in high school he had acquired a reputation as a solid performer and in-demand studio musician.

After graduation, Berry entered San Jose State University as a music major and again carefully balanced his academic and professional interests. It was at this time that a booking agent devised a plan to create a local ‘super group’ by recruiting members from several recently disbanded outfits. The band that resulted was known as Hush.

From the beginning, as main songwriter and chief strategist, Berry was the guiding force in the group. It didn’t take long before he snuck his new band into the studio and onto tape. Hush became popular up and down the west coast. Their independently released single garnered significant air play on Bay Area FM stations. They were included in several radio stations produced compilation discs. They won numerous radio competitions, one of which gave them the distinction as ‘Northern California’s Best Unsigned Band’. While they didn’t take that label seriously, the notion did prompt the release of their first complete album. That self-titled album ultimately landed them a contract with a major label, a across country tour, and even a minor hit single in Japan. Then suddenly their record company folded.

After returning from the tour, Berry built and opened Soundtek Studios, his own recording facility. He began writing new tunes and mapped out plans for Hush’s next album. A cut from the forth coming album, Gotta Get Back to You, won another radio station contest and became one of the station’s most requested cuts. Berry and band wasted no time and released their self-produced Hot Tonight album on their own imprint. That album went on to win the coveted BAM Magazine/Bay Area Music Archives’ “Bammie” Award for the year’s Best Independent Album of the year.

Berry continued to write and recorded Back To Back, his first solo album. With a collection of songs that were stylistically different from the Hush material, Berry stretched out from his role as band member, this time singing and playing all the parts himself. Included here were nine new original songs and powerful covers of Lennon and McCartney and Eddie Cochran. Back To Back shows Berry’s writing, playing, and producing skills reaching new levels of sophistication. The important music trade magazines, Cashbox, Record World, and Billboard, each gave the album high praise and “Pick of the Week” recognition. The influential Bay Area radio station KOME, announced they would be adding “Life the Game” to their regular rotation. The album landed on the desk of the legendary John Kalodner from Geffen Records. Kalodner soon set up live showcase performances in Los Angeles and San Francisco. A couple of interesting scenarios resulted from those showcases. One with Sammy Hagar’s recently orphaned band, and another with legendry British drummer, Carl Palmer.

Both scenarios ultimately worked out as Berry formed long term relationships with Hagar’s drummer David Lauser and (now Boston) guitarist Gary Pihl in the band Alliance and would eventually embark on an exciting new project with Palmer. On the strength of Back To Back and continued interest from Geffen, Berry moved to the UK where he found himself working with Yes guitarist Steve Howe in his new band, GTR. He also received a fortuitous invite to dine with Keith Emerson at the Savoy in London. It seems Palmer and Emerson were imagining a new project and they invited Robert Berry to join. Together the new band simply known as 3 would purposefully step away from expectations, aiming instead to break new ground. The union resulted in album ‘To The Power of Three’ on Geffen Records, a supporting tour and eventually the release of several live 3 concert recordings.

Upon returning from the 3 tour, Berry and Hagar band alums, along with former Night Ranger, Gamma, Montrose keyboard player, Alan ‘Fitz’ Fitzgerald got busy and formed Alliance as an ongoing project. The band has released 4 well received CDs. With his stature elevated by numerous high-profile projects, Berry found his recording studio busy with a long list of notable clients from around the world. At the same time, he was being offered numerous opportunities to perform with prominent recording artists. He signed on for the daunting task of trying to fill in for David Pack during a stint fronting Ambrosia. As a multi-instrumentalist, he has occasionally performed with The Tubes when they need a hand. He has established himself as long-time bass player for the Greg Kihn Band and has developed a strong songwriting partnership with Kihn.

2010 marked the live concert debut of the December People - Classic Rock Christmas. Berry developed a concept band that performs around the country during the Holiday season. The band includes friends from renowned classic rock acts such as Boston, The Tubes, Sammy Hagar, Y&T, Greg Kihn Band and occasional special guests, performing classic rock versions of popular Christmas songs. The project is designed to make holiday music hip and relevant for today's listeners and as a way to raise funds, gather food and clothing donations through Community Food Bank donations. December People have released 5 albums of classic Christmas songs recorded in the imagined style of great classic rock bands.

2016 was a big year for Robert Berry as he met with pal Keith Emerson in Los Angeles to discuss a 30th anniversary release of the long awaited follow up to the debut 3 album. If that wasn’t enough, he co-wrote 11 all new songs, produced and played Rekihndled, the Greg Kihn Band's first studio album in over 20 years.

The year 2017 was noteworthy for some major efforts. Early in the years, Berry, on bass and lead vocals joined with Terry Brock (GIANT, STRANGEWAYS) on lead vocals, Gary Pihl (BOSTON, SAMMY HAGAR, ALLIANCE) on guitar, and Matt Starr (ACE FREHLEY, MR. BIG) on drums, to form ALL 41. They release the band's debut album, "World's Best Hope". Simultaneously, he mounted a dedicated effort to complete his collaboration with Keith Emerson on the long awaited 3 follow up. That album, which took shape in 2016, was nearly shattered with the news of Keith Emerson tragic death. Ultimately and as a tribute to the friendship of Emerson and Berry, it somewhat painfully got back on track and is set for a summer of 2018 release date as 3.2 – The Rules Have Changed on Frontiers Music SRL

What happens when you get dumped hard? You start The Hate Club
27:15

Do your part to keep guitar driven rock ALIVE... join Loudini LIVE! Go to www.LouLombardiMusic.com/InnerCircle to find out how you can be a part of our LIVE online audience and get access to exclusive music and video!

“The Hate Club is a place for outcasts to call home, for people to punch in the face the messed up world we live in.” This is how The Hate Club’s (THC) leader and sole member, Alex Poe, describes the mission for his music and his ‘band' overall. Poe has set out to achieve this goal through an amalgamation of the driving bass heavy practices of EDM and the spite and swagger of punk rock, clearly heard through his vocal quality and lyricism.

Growing up in an oppressive Ukrainian household, Poe eventually fled to Los Angeles where he became enamored with the electronic music scene. In 2017 THC released its debut EP, Space Born, made major waves in the underground electronic music scene, becoming a cult favorite in the US primary musical hot spots, New York and LA. Now, with the release of their second EP, Misfits, THC furthers the dark yet charming narrative created by Space Born.

Check out Misfits Here

The music in Misfits explodes with a type of impulsive emotionality created by a thick, and often chaotic, bed of sound, perfectly supporting Poe’s entrancing vocals. Poe explains “This EP glorifies inappropriate behavior; it looks at your past with disgust and focuses on your ego.” Of the 5 songs on the Misfits EP some standout tracks include “Under My Feet,” “One Mile Away,” and “Little By Little.” Opening the EP and setting the tone powerfully with the industrial pop sound in “Under My Feet.”

While favorably compared to some Punk and EDM greats like Skrillix, Cage the Elephant, Missio, or The White Stripes, THC is truly in a class all its own. Keeping in the spirit of Punk rock, Poe is a dedicated DIY artist who not only writes all of his music but also tracks all parts, as well as mixing and mastering his songs by himself to prepare for performance with the help of his Ableton Push. This approach has allowed him to achieve the level of excitement, and overall sound, in performance comparable to a full-band. Poe states, “I want to reinvent the way artists perform now. I think there’s so much room to explore in the electronic world, in terms of performance.”

Following the tragic death of her musical soulmate, Sarah Sharp finds the strength to make music again

When singer-songwriter Sarah Sharp’s life began to unhinge after the passing of a beloved artistic ally, instead of resisting profound foundational shifts, she bravely surrendered to the monumental changes and experienced a spiritual awakening. To commemorate this new era of fertile self-growth and vibrant creativity, she’s releasing a series of four EPs with each release to be issued in three-month increments. Aptly, she calls the opening salvo in this program, Wake. Up until now, the award-winning songwriter and jazz singer has been best known for embodying 30s and 40s jazz-cool with the acclaimed combo the Jitterbug Vipers. These solo EPs, however, will piece together to present the full breadth of Sarah’s artistry. “With every step of this transition, I’ve been reminded to keep going and listen to my heart and my instincts, and to not make decisions out of fear,” the Austin, Texas-based artist reveals. As a solo artist, and a former member of the Jitterbug Vipers, Sarah has topped the Austin music award polls as Best Female Vocalist, Best Producer, Best Songwriter, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Band of the Year, and Best Jazz Band. She has been featured on NPR’s “Song Travels with Michael Feinstein” where Feinstein suggested some of her original songs were destined to become standards. Recently, Paste Magazine premiered the mesmerizing single “You Don’t Dare” from the Wake EP. Previously, Sarah explored the expanse of her talents writing somewhat anonymously in a variety of contexts and styles. Sarah’s songs have been featured worldwide in ad campaigns for Chanel, Dell, Kia, ABC’s Revenge, E.L.F. cosmetics, among others, and on TV, including hit shows The Good Wife, Cable Girls, Grandfathered and more. After the passing of the Jitterbug Viper’s sage leader, guitarist Slim Richey, Sarah boldly didn’t try to recapture the smoky magic of the group. Instead, she dove into creating her first solo offering in a decade. Opening herself up artistically, she began to explore writing across genres in a solo context, and things began to almost poetically fall in place. Not only did she have an outlet for her eclectic palette, it was as if the universe was screaming for her to share it. She won a posh songwriting grant after a grueling 10-month decision process. The money received will pay for her marketing and publicity campaign, ensuring this creatively expansive outpouring receives the attention it deserves.

Art is a byproduct of life, and the vibrant and diverse music on Sarah’s four EPs reflect a powerful shift in her personal landscape. Slim’s passing set off a series of painfully complex events and inner turmoil that opened Sarah up to a specific rebirth called a Kundalini Awakening which completely changed the way she organized her reality. These EPs are the songs of redemption, renewal, and reclamation in the face of profound change in Sarah’s life. Each EP offers access to a distinct Sarah Sharp artistic sphere. Her first release, Wake, is thoughtfully organized around an intimate singer-songwriter aesthetic that’s both earthy and elegant. The six-song collection is beautifully fragile, replete with supple and sensitive instrumental interplay that frames Sarah’s finely crafted tales of heartache and salvation. On the dreamy “You Don’t Dare,” with woozy soulful vocals and watery guitars, Sarah reveals a tale of how disaster can lead to liberation. Beneath the ethereal vocals and slow playful piano motifs on “Heart Weigh,” Sarah sings from the other side of spiritual torment, from a vantage point of redemption and fresh, overwhelming soul-connecting love. Sarah’s second EP showcases her pop sensibilities and pairs slow-burn hooks with raw emotionality. The track “Easy” sparks afire from a thick and woody upright bassline and smolders into a sage Adam and Eve-themed treatise on hard fought knowledge. In this lush and refined setting, Sarah explores a majestically full-sound with honeyed harmony vocals, piano, and a lilting, almost bossa nova, groove. Sarah’s graceful sensuality imbues her velvety vocal phrasing on “What To With This Love,” and here she seduces with vulnerability. The delicate track “Kidding” is a sweet farewell to lost love. Sarah’s third EP will be a jazz offering, featuring two jazz chestnuts, two originals, and two unique covers reimagined with a little Jitterbug Viper panache. The character of her final EP is yet to be determined. The EPs were recorded in Austin and Brooklyn, and capture the electric musicality surrounding each locale. Select marquee musicians on the tracks include Phoebe Hunt, and Sarah’s current musical soulmate, guitarist Mitch Watkins (Lyle Lovett, Leonard Cohen, Jerry Jeff Walker, Joe Ely, K.T. Oslin, Jennifer Warnes, Abra Moore and Bob Schneider). Up next, Sarah will continue her Tuesday residency at the venerated venue the Elephant Room in Austin, and she will commemorate this EP series with a release event. Reflecting on her path to soulful salvation in the wake of loss and inner tumult, she says: “I’m stepping into my full adult self with a whole new path that I didn’t know was possible a couple of years ago. I’m ready to be fully present and make the most out of now.”

Closing in on 70, the prince of darkness himself told the Philadelphia Inquirer this week that he's the new Bing Crosby. Citing a letter from a female fan in her seventies who wrote his majesty a letter of appreciation saying how much she enjoys his live shows.

While Ozzy may be scaling back a bit as evidenced by the title of his latest tour, (The No More Tours Tour) he has no plans to quit. He says that this is his passion but he also wants to spend more time with his grand children.

He also talked a bit about not being too happy with his time with Black Sabbath. This doesn't really come as much of a surprise. After all, they did fire him all those years ago, but more than that Ozzy is just used to being the boss and having his own way and there's nothing wrong with that one bit! We here at The Loudini Rock and Roll Circus hope that he keeps touring and putting out great Ozzy music for a long time.

Believe it or not critics do get it wrong...sometimes HORRIBLY wrong. Did you know that when Zeppelin released their debut album one critic commented "They're like Cream... only worse!"?

Other critic misfires include, AC/DC's High Voltage, The Stones' Exile On Main Street, The Jimi Hendrix Experience's "Are You Experienced", Nirvana's "Nevermind" and many more.

This week on The Loudini Hard Rock and Metal Circus, the team puts together their top ten examples of critic's arrogance and stupidity. Along the way we will also address the function of the music critic and what music criticism is SUPPOSED to be.

Are there any albums that you love that the critics hated? We would love to hear about them even if it's St. Anger. We won't judge. Tell us what you love about them. Featured Loudini Artists: Sova Jack Berry

Many times the key to a great guitar riff is doing something as simple as retuning the guitar. Alternate tunings are used by many classic guitarists from Robert Johnson to The Edge. If you have ever listened to Zeppelin's "Going to California", Pearl Jam's "Daughter", George Thorogoode's "Bad To The Bone" or the Stones' "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" and wondered... "How'd they come up with that?" Then you definitely want check out this week's Bluesy Tuesday Podcast.

The Story of Icky Thump and the killer comedy sketch, Wicked Riff Wednesday Ep 8
08:03

Do your part to keep guitar driven rock ALIVE... join Loudini LIVE! Go to http://LouLombardiMusic.com/InnerCircle to find out how you can be a part of our LIVE online audience and get access to exclusive music and video!
"Icky Thump" was the White Stripes highest charting UK single and chartted well around the rest of the planet as well. It also won the band a Grammy Award in 2008 for best rock performance by a duo or group.

The name of the song is a play on the British expression, "Ecky Thump" which loosely means, "What the heck!" Jack White changed it from "ecky" to "icky" thinking that the former would just confuse American teenage audiences. While the lyrics are a criticism of the treatment of immigrants in the U.S., the origin of the title is much more interesting.

The title was inspired by an episode of a British sketch comedy show called "The Goodies". The episode in question "Kung fu Kapers" also known as "Ecky-Thump" caused one fan to laugh for 25 minutes non-stop, resulting in a massive heart attack and death.

The song, (not the sketch) is one of the greatest riff's of the early 2000s and that's why it's this week's Wicked Riff!

The Black Crowes seem to be on an idefinite hiatus. In the mean time we will just have to content ourselves with The Magpie Salute, a hard rocking blues based outfit that features Black Crowes alumni Rich Robinson, Mark Ford and bassist Sven Pipien, as well as keyboardist Matt Slocum, drummer Joe Magistro, and vocalists Adrien Reju and Katrine Ottosen from Robinson's solo band. John Hogg handles lead vocal duties with passion and soul.

Formed in 2016, their first album (released a year later) was a live recording which featured a mix of Rich Robinson and Mark Ford songs from their solo work with one offical Magpie track, "Omission".

On August 10th of this year, they released their first studio album, "High Water I". The record shows that Robinson, Ford and company can still rock with the best of them. If you're a Black Crowes fan, you will want to give this record a try.

On this week's Bluesy Tuesday we discuss the first single, "Omission"

I know what you are thinking... Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, have both denied that Led Zeppelin was heavy metal. When you mention metal in the same sentence as Zeppelin in front of Page or Plant they get this look on their faces like you just cut the rudest fart ever.

Riddle me this; If it's true that Led Zeppelin in not metal, then why is it that SO many metal bands, especially those from the 1980's not only site them as a major influence but out right were trying to BE Led Zeppelin.

So much has happened in music since Zeppelin retired in 1980. Heavy metal grew into multiple sub-genres but when most people talk about the beginings of metal there are usually 3 bands Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin.

Zeppelin does seem like the odd man here. They are the most "hippie" of the three and the most overtly blues based of the three, yet they definitely had their metal moments. As much as they sang about squeezing the lemon they also sang about vikings and wizards...which is very metal and while they always seemed to keep one foot in the blues, they laid serious metal ground work with tracks like Achillies Last Stand and The Immigrant Song.

This week on The Loudini Hard Rock and Metal Circus we uncover Zeppelin's most metal moments. Let us know if we missed any... what are your favorite Zeppelin metal moments?

Voted number 9 in a Rolling Stone readers poll of the best Led Zeppelin songs, "Ten Years Gone" is definitely one of the band's most epic tracks from it's most epic album, Physical Graffitti. Clocking in at 6 minutes and 55 seconds and comprised of 14 layered guitar tracks, the song was a beast for the band to play live. It required bass player and multi-instrumentalist John Paul Jones to play a 3 necked guitar while covering the bass parts with bass pedals.

Jimmy Page had written the different sections of the song and put it together thinking that it would be an instrumental but Robert Plant came up thoughtful lyrics about a relationship that ended before Led Zeppelin began

From SongFacts.com:

Robert Plant wrote the lyrics about a girlfriend who made him choose between her and his music 10 years earlier. She got the boot. In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine (March 13, 1975) the interviewer, Cameron Crowe, asked Robert Plant what gambles he had taken. Plant replied: "Let me tell you a little story behind the song 'Ten Years Gone' on our new album. I was working my ass off before joining Zeppelin. A lady I really dearly loved said, 'Right. It's me or your fans.' Not that I had fans, but I said, 'I can't stop, I've got to keep going.' She's quite content these days, I imagine. She's got a washing machine that works by itself and a little sports-car. We wouldn't have anything to say anymore. I could probably relate to her, but she couldn't relate to me. I'd be smiling too much. Ten years gone, I'm afraid. Anyway, there's a gamble for you."

Since it was such a chore to perform live the band dropped it from it's set list in 1977 but revisited it for the Knebworth Festival in 1979.

On this week's Wicked Riff Wednesday we pay homage to one of Led Zeppelin's most amazing compositions and fan favorite "Ten Years Gone".

Album covers are as iconic as the great artists who's music they represent. In the history of rock the visual aspect has always been very important and depending on the era and genre, the visual has been even more important than the music. But that's a subject for another podcast.

A great album cover will make you feel like you are taking home your very own piece of art. In the case of cover art from 70's era Molly Hatchet, and Yes, the artwork could completely stand alone. Some covers are very simple like The Beatles "White Album" and Metallica's "Black Album". They leave a lot to the imagination and get out of the way and let the music speak. There are sexy album covers, political album covers, funny album covers and even interactive album covers. Sticky Fingers, is an interactive album cover, with a working zipper!

Some covers are so iconic that even when people don't know the artist or the music they know the cover. The Clash's London Calling and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon are examples of cover art that even kids recognize whether or not they know the music.

This week on the Loudini Hard Rock and Metal Circus, Lou and Keith discuss the greatest album covers of all time and do their best to pick the top ten. Featured Loudini Artists:

Wicked Riff Wednesday Episode 6: Back in Black and why AC/DC ISN'T Heavy Metal

There is something infectious about AC/DC's music. Songs like You Shook Me All Night Long, Girl's Got Rhythm, T-N-T and Back in Black, make the young and the old alike want to get up and rock out. Their music is heavy enough to be confused with heavy metal but fun enough that wedding bands cover it.

While the guitars, bass, drums and vocals (and some lyrics too) are definitely heavy enough to be metal, AC/DC's swaggering rhythm's, bluesy guitar playing and penchant for "American thighs" puts them firmly in the hard rock realm. Sorry metal heads. I know that you love AC/DC too. It's nothing to be ashamed of.

In many ways AC/DC like their predecessors Black Sabbath, are a bit of a conundrum in the heavy rock world. They are embraced by music fans with allegiances too various styles, including punk and classic rock but claim no official affiliation. They simply play the music that comes naturally to them.

In 1981 they changed the rock world when they released Back in Black. It became an almost instant classic. Every track is great, and you can still hear most of them today on any classic rock station.

The title track is an homage to their fallen front man Bon Scott and is as powerful today as it was almost when it was released nearly 40 years ago!

In this week's episode of Bluesy Tuesday we discuss and disect Led Zeppelin's Black Dog.

The main riff was composed by Led Zeppelin Bassist John Paul Jones and is organized around a call and response pattern. The song begins with Robert Plant singing accapella followed by the band "answering" him with Jones' riff. The song got it's name from a black labradore retreiver that the band found wandering around their Headley Grange studio.

The main riff is derived directly out of the blues scale and is often mistakenly thought to be "polyrhythmic". The confusion comes in because the way that Jones phrases the riff. Instead of hard resolutions on the predicatable downbeat, Jones creates a looping feel with the phrases that circle back on themselves in less predictable places giving Black Dog it's signature feel.

Surprisingly, Black Dog wasn't always a staple of Zepplen's live show. They played it off and on through out the 1970's. By contrast, it's become a signature song of Robert Plant's solo bands and he has performed many wildly different versions of the classic over the years, including a blue grass flavored version with country singer Alison Krauss.

God Hates Unicorns formed in 2015..or maybe 2014. I don't remember.I got an invite from Josh to go see their show. I knew of Josh from his earlier bands Skull Death Gut Corpse and Debutante. Josh and I traded shows with each other during the Pittsburgh music scene golden age (the early 2000's when everyone was on Myspace.com the greatest tool for musicians to ever have existed).
I remember seeing their very first "performance" at the Squirrel Hill Sports bar. It was a bit cold that night maybe early Spring or late Fall. The band was a classic 3 piece. By classic 3 piece band I mean a singer, a bass player, and some one on stage only to press play on a drum machine. The tracks were created on Josh's familiar Roland 505 (the same one he used to make tracks for Debutante). The tracks sounded pretty good from where I was sitting. If you like depressing dark wave dance tracks then what's not to love here? The songs had enough thumping kick drums and melodic keyboard sounds to pass most peoples standards for a song on there own. Unfortunately, something about the sound that night was off to the band as Joshua operating as the lead singer wondered on and off the stage seeming to try to find an area of the room where he could hear the track properly. Leaving the rest of the band that remained on stage looking confused and frightened as Josh careened through the crowd and then back to the stage again screaming into a bullhorn; finally he stopped on the stage for the last time and laid down in defeat. The bands first outing did not appear to be going well. They played about 3 songs from what I recall and none of them correctly based on the displeased expressions from the band members.

After the show I jokingly asked Josh if he still wanted me to join the band (he asked a few months earlier) and he said yes. He said they could use a guitar player. I told him I didn't currently own an electric guitar only an acoustic-electric. Then he said I could use the electric guitar that a previous musician left in his basement. I asked him what kind of guitar it was and he said it was a Fender Stratcaster. That was enough to get me into the idea of joining a band even though I didn't really feel like joining a band at the time. That and Josh made it sound like we would only play paying gigs and get fucking rich! BABY!
Anyway I'm still in the band today and I'm being held against my will, come save me!

Getting a job as a lawyer, leads to songwriting and music press accolades for Paulo Franco

Paulo Franco is a Richmond, Virginia based singer/ songwriter. In terms of recording, it may seem that Franco has come to the game later in life than some, but his musical journey has been a lifelong story. Born to Colombian immigrants and raised in Washington D.C., Paulo embraces his heritage as a first generation American and his songs and style reflect that. As a child, his father turned him on to the country music of the United States via the Johnny Cash Variety show and on his own he discovered a love for rock n roll through the Stones and the Beatles. At the age of nine, he picked up a classical guitar and a musician was born. After years of playing in various cover bands and honing his chops, Franco began writing his own material in earnest in 2010.

Paulo's songs are steeped in storytelling, often drawing from his own life and those around him. The sound is a seamless blend of the myriad of influences that have shaped both his everyday life and his musical tastes. Listeners will find glimpses of Robert Earl Keen's storytelling, John Prine's wit, The Stones' rock n roll heart, and the fluidity of The Grateful Dead often times infused with the rhythms of traditional Latin and Colombian music. He has recently included original Spanish songs into his songwriting, bringing a depth and a love of two cultures seldom seen during the same show or album. Paulo switches his voice from country twang, to rock anthem, to Spanish troubadour. His vocals are so authentically Spanish that it’s easy to forget you just heard him effortlessly sing a country tune in English.

In 2012, Paulo released his debut record, By The Light Of A Paper Moon regionally and began playing more and more shows around the Richmond area as well as other markets across the country. In the last few years he has the honor of sharing the stage with the likes of Robert Earl Keen, Eli Young Band, Chris Knight, Rhett Miller (Old 97s), Walter Salas Humara (The Silos), Dan Baird and Homemade Sin, Adam Carroll, Cris Jacobs, Cory Branan and many others. 2016 saw the release of Franco's latest work, The Last Card, an album No Depression calls “a phenomenal sophomore record.” No Depression's Emily Hinde listed The Last Card at No. 2 of the year's best, behind only Avett Brothers. Paste Magazine hails Franco's effort as possibly the most sincere album of the year. The Last Card, produced by Bob Rupe (The Silos, Cracker, Gutterball and Sparklehorse) and featuring a virtual who's who of Richmond musicians, shows that Paulo wears his heart on his sleeve musically and can hang with any songwriter working today.

Paulo closed out 2017 with a Tour of Colombia that included stops in Medellín, Cali, Roldanillo, Cartagena and Santa Marta.

In 2018 Paulo plans to release two brand new songs on July 14, Richmond's Just Fine and El Rey y Su Cadillac. The Freightliners plan on heading back to the studio soon to record a brand new record.

Rockin' Rant #2: Peter Frampton wants to punish you for streaming his songs
10:48

This week 70's icon Peter Frampton Tweeted that he had over 55 million downloads of his song "Baby I Love Your Way" for which he only received $1700. The tweet was part of a series of tweet where he told about testifiying to congress on the behalf of ASCAP. You can read it for yourself here:https://twitter.com/peterframpton/status/1025584924609400832 .

These older artists cannot seem to come to terms with the fact that the world has moved on. We no longer have the same music industry that we did in the 70's, 80's and 90's where a handful of acts dominated the industry because radio and MTV were really the only places to get heard by a significant number of people. The industry today is much more friendly to the indie artist. For a fraction of the money that it would take to produce and promote a band in the 80's, indie acts can produce totally professional sounding recordings and promote themselves by themselves or with the help of some very affordable outsource partners.

The industry is also much more friendly to the music fan. Heard about a great band from a friend or magzine? Just do a YouTube search and you can check them out immediately. Instead of buying albums of filler to get one or two good songs you can buy the good tracks on iTunes or listen on Spotify. For true music fans, this is nothing short of a miracle.

So... recorded music, for the most part is now free. That's the price of all of the democatization and simplication of producing and listening to music. That sucks for artists like Peter Frampton who enjoyed big royalty checks but it does not mean that people do not value music, nor does it mean that there isn't a lot of money to be made in the new music industry. There have been some great books and articles written on this subject. For a primer I would recommend "Free" by Chris Anderson. you can check that out here: https://www.amazon.com/Free-Future-Radical-Chris-Anderson/dp/1401322905

This democatization is not the end of recorded music, just like radio was not the end of live concerts and sound recording was not the end of sheet music; although many people in the industry thought that it was! These older artists want things to go back to the way that they used to be... "Let's make music great again!" is their motto. Does that sound familiar?

Sorry Peter, but this is the new music industry. It's the wild wild west and this new generation has set out to tame it in their own way. There is more music than ever in EVERY genre for fans to enjoy and it's easier for bands to connect with fans who love what they do. Wether you are a fan or an artist, this is the greatest time in history for music and potentially very profitable for those with vision.

In 1991 Soundgarden released their 3rd studio album, Badmotorfinger. As the saying goes, "third time's a charm!" BMF continued the band's hard rock/metal rooted sound but with more mature songwriting. The songs "Outshined" and "Rusty Cage" were MTV hits and pushed Soundgarden into the mainstream.

With it's groove doom tuned down riff, locked in rhythm section, humungous guitars, imagination bending lyrics and legendary vocal performance, "Outshined" is one of grunge's most important moments and to put it bluntly, grunge's greatest riff... period.

In this episode we uncover what makes this riff so magical and a get a peek at it's inception. So grab your favorite flannel shirt and crank this one up

Pop Quiz Hot Shot: What's better than a band that plays great guitar driven rock?

Answer: A band that plays great guitar driven rock with TWO guitarists!

Excess has been a characteristic of rock and roll since it's inception. Louder, bigger, faster, harder and of course more have been the cries of rock's biggest fans. While legendary acts like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Van Halen feature one hot guitar player, some bands just want to take it up a notch.

What do you do when you are already on ten? How do you get that "push over the cliff?" You add another guitar player of course!

The two guitar sound has been a staple of rock and roll since the Beatles, but put to much better use by bands like the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, and of course AC/DC. This week on The Loudini Hard Rock & Metal Circus we ask the question, "What are the top five twin guitar attack bands of all time?"

What two guitar bands are the most iconic? Which one made the best use of two guitars? What guitar tag team is the most talented? Which twin guitar band is the most influential?

In the history of blues based hard rock there is a tradition of bands playing great heavy rhythm riffs with catchy singable chorues. Bands like AC/DC and KISS come to mind but there are many others including this week's Bluesy Tuesday featured band; KIX.

Originally calling themselves Shooze and eventually changing their name to the Generators and ultimately, the hard rocking boys from Balitmore, KIX, garnered quite a reputation for themselves as one of Maryland's most exciting live bands, covering influences in the blues based hard rock format.

This year marks the thirtith aniversary of their smash album, Blow My Fuse and the band is celebrating by releasing a two disc special edition of their late eighties classic featuring a remixed and remaseterd version of the album by Beau Hill as well as an entire disc of demos that will give a fans a peek under the hood at how the songs evolved. Rockin' Rant #1: Dumbass Artists That Block Me
11:15

YouTube is the number one source for people to find music. If you want someone to hear your music, you have a better chance of catching their ear on YouTube than you do on Spotify, Soundcloud, Pandora, or Bandcamp. Those are just the facts, as of the writing of this blog post.

Since we have established this as a fact, why in the hell would an artist block a video who's sole intention was to promote their music? That sounds like madness... right? Let me tell you kids, it happens ALL THE TIME!

We actually stopped posting our podcast on YouTube for a couple of years for this reason. We would put a lot of time and effort and even financial expense into producing a great podcast, converting it to video, promoting it, only to have the artist, or their label block it. I even had labels block videos of artist that THEY had me interview for them. WTF???

And it's not just me... Rick Beato also did a great video about this. Rick is awesome and you should definitely check out his YouTube Channel. You can check out Rick's rant on "the blockers" here: https://youtu.be/nnp2VS2cBwA

This music (guitar driven rock music) isn't exactly setting the world on fire. It's really guys like me, Electric Monkey Radio, Rock Rage Radio, Metal Devastation, Loudwire and a few others that are truly passionate enough about it who are beating the drum for rock and roll. People find us on YouTube and discover new bands and younger folks (almost none of them listen to corporate radio these days) find out about great classic bands. I wanted to let you know that this was happening for you to tell your favorite bands and their labels to knock this crap off.

Wicked Riff Wednesday Episode 4: What Was The First Heavy Metal Riff
07:12

When we speak of the beginnings of heavy metal, we may mention acts like Cream, The Jimi Hendrix Experience or Blue Cheer and while all of these bands played heavy music for their time, there is one track by one band that predates them all.

In 1964 when everyone was trying to sound like The Beatles, frustrated Kinks guitarist Dave Davies took a razor blade to the speaker cone of his amp affectionally known as "little greeney" and changed the course of rock and roll forever.

The song "You Really Got Me" sounded nothing like anything of it's time. It was heavy and sleazy and the first track in history who's hook was based around a distorted guitar riff. This was a year before Keef Riff-hard rocked our socks off with the fuzztone riff of Satisfaction and four years before The Beatles would cut Helter Skelter.

The track was a complete stand out in it's day and has become one of the most recognized riffs in all of classic rock-dome. So this week we celebrate Dave Davies, The Kinks and the birth of heavy metal!

When Should Aging Rockers Retire?
55:05

Getting older... it happens to ALL of us. Someday we will be talking about how old Greta Van Fleet looks. Trust me... we will. This begs the question, is rock and roll an inveritable fountain of youth or do rockers have an expiration date?
Being a musician and getting a little older myself, I can tell you that the love of playing music for those of us who truly have it never goes away. When I strap on that Les Paul, I honestly feel pretty much the same way that I did when I was seventeen. I would imagine that it's no different for Pete Townsend, Keith Richards, Robert Plant or Bruce Dickinson. There is something about playing music that feels eternal no matter how long you have been doing it.

Still the question comes up when you hear about a Meatloaf reunion tour where, Meatloaf won't be singing. I will admit that that one is a real head scratcher for me too. It also comes into question when you go see and artist and it's obvious that they are only going through the motions with no real passion behind what they are doing. And of course it can be disheartening to hear one of your favorite rockers sound completly burnt out and singing terribly off key all night. When I see and hear things like this I am tempted to say, maybe it's time to rethink what you are doing.

But... who the hell am I to tell someone when it's time to stop playing music???

Ultimately the fans will decide when a rocker will retire. I have seen bands out there, like Whitesnake still doing it, with a grizzled and very tired sounding David Coverdale but people still turn out to the shows. Obviously, people still want to see them doing their thing. As long as fans will show up, there is no practical reason to stop touring.

People love artists for a lot of different reasons. It isn't always how well they sing or play... I will refrain from listing current bands... folks in their twenties who fall into THAT category. Sometimes its nostalgia; sometimes it's just being in the same room with a band that had a huge impact on their life, no matter how they sound now. There was something comforting knowing that Tom Petty, David Bowie, and Prince where still out there making music and very sad that they are no longer with us. It makes me feel good that the Stones put out a blues album and that Robert Plant is doing Americana. These artists, despite what they do are touch stones. These are the men and women who showed us what rock and roll is. They are our elders and while poking fun at celebrities seems to be a favorite past time of western culture, we should always have some reverence for those who laid the way for us. They should be given leway to sound as they sound, look as they look and to grow old gracefully... or not. Featured Loudini Artists: Hardcore Superstar

Bluesy Tuesday Episode 4 Slash Lives
12:59

: It may seem like a miracle, but you know that guy from Guns 'N Roses... Yeah.. .the one with the top hat and Les Paul slung down to his ankles? Well that sneaky so and so, found time to get together with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators and record and another record. And let me you kids, if the first single is any indication, this it going to be one bad ass record. It's called Living the Dream and we are going to give you a taste on this week's Bluesy Tuesday Episode 4.

We are also going to take a closer look at one of Slash's classic riffs, Paradise City and explore it a little deeper. When it comes to blues based hard rock it was hard to pick which track to talk about from the Slash catalog. We settled on Paradise City because it's main riffs and melodic structure are practically a lesson in great blues based riffs in the tradition of bands like Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin. So... it's a double shot this week... a "two for Tuesday" if you will of the grand master himself... Slash!

Wicked Riff Wednesday Episode 3: Hey Hey My My... is Neil Young a good guitar player?
09:12

What does it mean when some one says that this person or that person is a good or even great guitar player? On what merits should we judge or is it completely subjective?

On this week's episode we discuss Neil Young. While mostly thought of as a singer songwriter, Neil has a very unique approach to playing lead guitar. His style is self decribed as "less is most". The solo to Cinnamon Girl is the same note repeated on two different strings. Yet I find his guitar work very moving.

Some of his best guitaring is live. Do a YouTube search of his live electic work and you will find a guitarist who plays with blind feel. He just goes for it. While he hits his share of clunkers for sure, there is a danger and a beauty at times in his playing that simply just tugs at your heart strings.

Today I want to celebrate the heavier side of Neil Young with the classic riff "Hey Hey My My (Into The Black). Whether you're a Neil Young fan or not, you have to admit that this is one of the HEAVIEST riffs in rock's pantheon. So grab a cold beverage and crank this one up because Rust Never Sleeps!

A Stalking Fan asks to join the band, and Dan Too is Born
23:04

Dan Too is a country-rock, alt. country outfit from Santa Cruz, CA with a thinly veiled tendency towards yacht-rock. The band contains members from American Starlet, Painted Horses, Dan Juan, Grand Larson, Slow Ocean, T Sisters, Birdhouse, and Dos Osos.

Dan Too is about to become your new favorite band. Debuting with us today their latest single "Waiting around for life," we found ourselves instantly intrigued by the band.

From start to finish the track entices with strong hooks, prominent instrumentation and thoughtful lyricism. Hailing from Santa Cruz the band paves the way for new Alt-Country bands alike. It's evident that the band whispers hints of artists such as Wilco and Whiskeytown, but the music they create is on their own terms.

The band contains members from American Starlet, Painted Horses, Dan Juan, Grand Larson, Slow Ocean, T Sisters, Birdhouse, and Dos Oso, which is impressive to say the least. Singer and guitarist Daniel Talamantes is a vocal dream as he teams up with Ian Parks on pedal steel, guitar and vocals, Tyler Larson on bass and vocals and Jon Payne on drums and vocals. A match made in heaven, "Isis and Osiris," is only the beginning for Dan Too.. Listen closely....

Bluesy Tuesday Episode 3: Greta Van Fleet, the next rock gods, or cheap Led Zeppelin wannabes?
10:44

Every once in a while a band comes along the stirs the pot, generating a large fanbase as well as detractors. Greta Van Fleet with their Led Zeppelin flavored debut has done both.

Their fans love them and show up to their shows in droves, evidenced by the sold out shows that they are playing around the US, but they do have their share of haters.

It boggles my mind that the same people who decry today's bands a superficial, plastic, and unsoulful are the same ones who jump on the Greta Van Fleet hate wagon. Isn't this the band that they have been waiting for? Why is Greta Van Fleet so polerizing?

It's probably a combination of the band's blatant Led Zeppelin infunce which they actually deny. This has understandably earned the ire of a lot of Led Zeppelin fans and has even irked Robert Plant a bit. They owe a lot of what they do to Led Zeppelin and they would do best just to own that and wear it as a badge of honor.

They are a young band and it will be interesting to see what they do next. In the meantime, what side of the fence are you on? Are you a Greta Van Fleet fan or foe?

Birthed from the rough streets of Homestead; Neostem brings their working class punk ethos to rock and roll
23:39

Formed in early 2013 in a very cold garage, the foundation of Neostem was formed. Three musicians from different musical backgrounds came together to make the sound that is only described as Neostem! The music is fused with punk, grunge, alternative and a tad of metal, wrapped in neatly in a loud, tightly knit shell. "LIpid" is the latest EP that was recorded at Razorblade Recordings and the band are preparing for EP #2 for the Fall of 2018! Catch them live at a venue near you!

Clayton Morgan learns that you never loose your passion for music even if you're all grown up
20:49

Son of Eddie Daniels (The Four Sonics), Clayton Morgan is history in the remaking, but with a fresh new flavor for 2018. His debut single, “Taste for Love” is scheduled for June 2018 release.

Based in Dallas, Texas, but born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Clayton Morgan knew from a young age that music was in his blood. He greatly admired what his father had accomplished with The Four Sonics, and the impact that the iconic soul foursome had on the world. Growing up, Clayton often envisioned following in his father’s footsteps.

Music played a big role in Clayton Morgan’s upbringing, both at home and at school. Clayton was regularly part of school musicals, choir groups and drama clubs. Outside of school, he always looked up to his father as his mentor and was also heavily influenced by a wide range of singers, including Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Prince, Madonna and Whitney Houston, to name a few. All of these ingredients combined, have no doubt, been the main contributing factor toward Clayton’s unique and authentic vocal style.
