Description

It's ok, you can admit it. Sometimes motherhood seems less like the sweetness of a Pamper's commercial and more like a scene out of Jaws. Here at the Mother Like a Boss Podcast, we dive into the good, the bad and the ugly of motherhood and modern homemaking, with honest conversations, tips, strategies and tools.

Episode Date
Ep 053: M-Lab session with Micah Paschall
50:24

We're doing things a little different this summer when it comes to interviews. Rather than bring on an expert in a particular field, I invited real moms with real struggles to come on the show to share with us what they are going through in motherhood and at home. Sometimes, just hearing another mom ask a question that you've always had is exactly the thing you need to motivate you toward change and improvement.

Today, I have the pleasure of introducing you to Micah Paschall, a Mother Like a Boss student with a beautiful heart and story. It takes a brave woman to discuss her past and present feelings about homemaking open and honestly. We had a great chat about making habits and routines stick and I help her to create more non-negotiable chores for her children.

Join me for another raw and beautiful episode in the M-Lab sessions.

Ep 052: 7 ways to make this the most organized school year yet!
35:55

I can't believe it's already time to do a back-to-school episode, but here we are. Time, it is a flyin' always. I know that most moms start the year off with the year off with the best of intentions. "This is the school year that I get our collective ish organized and staying that way!" and then by mid-October, you're in full-on chaos mode and not sure how you got there.

Today's episode is aimed to help you start, and keep a system that will make this the most organized school year yet. Start now and thank yourself in December when you've still got it all together, running smoothly.

Ep 051: M-Lab Sessions with Julia Holen
47:52

We're doing things a little different this summer when it comes to interviews. Rather than bring on an expert in a particular field, I invited real moms with real struggles to come on the show to share with us what they are going through in motherhood and at home. Sometimes, just hearing another mom ask a question that you've always had is exactly the thing you need to motivate you toward change and improvement.

Today, I have the pleasure of introducing you to Julia Holen who is going to rock your world with how open, honest and vulnerable she is about her life. It takes courage to speak about her struggles with bipolar disorder and she does so with strength and openness. We had a wonderful chat on how she can plan her routines around her life, rather than the other way around and how to stick to household and motherhood routines even in the face of difficult circumstances.

Ep 050: My favorite cleaning supplies
36:32

It's the cleaning supplies episode! There are 1001 different brands, supplies and tools out there, so how do you decide what is best? I spent 11 years in the house cleaning business doing the hard work of researching which supplies and tools worked best for most homes. Now, I'm giving you my favorites.

Will all of these work for you? Maybe not. This is based on my own opinion and what I've found gives you the most bang for your buck. Your caddy doesn't need to be overflowing with cleaning bottles to be effective.

It's all about shifting your mindset and the way you think about the process.

Ep 046: A peek inside my daily journaling practice
35:44

I've been a journaling gal since the time I could write. I loved having diaries. I loved having beautiful journals and #allthepens to write with. Writing has always been cathartic for me and a great way to achieve the goals I set for myself. Journaling brings me closer to who I want to be.

But listen, I know journaling can seem extremely overwhelming. What do you write? How long do you write? What kind of journal is best? Should I use prompts? What if I am drawing a blank here? Today, I'm pulling back the curtain of my daily journaling practice and giving you the scoop on how this simple habit has helped me become a better mom, a more successful business owner and a happier woman all around.

Ep 045: Setting boundaries like a mother
31:25

I see you over there, mama. Guilt-ridden every time you say no and always want to please others. You wonder how you can feel better about what you say yes to and how you can live a life that feels more joy-filled and less resent-driven. The answer is boundaries.

I am what I like to call a "boundary ninja" but it hasn't always been that way. I spent many years of my life letting people in my business and personal life walk all over me for fear of stepping up and saying no. A boundary is the ultimate show of love, as you can say yes and be open wholeheartedly without resentment or anger.

This episode is all about helping you build your emotional fence high enough so that the only people coming in are the ones you have allowed.

Ep 044: Owning your mom life w/ Danie Gohr
30:37

Mom life can feel like the tough life. It's the often exhausted life, the under-appreciated life, but that doesn't have to be the norm. Danie Gohr from Catch This Mama is with us today to talk about her movement and podcast that is giving moms the freedom to take back their beautiful lives.

Our conversation was a love song to the moms out there that feel stuck. We chat about going through the tough times and coming out on the other side, how to keep it together during the ever changing seasons of motherhood and how consistency helped Danie and her children during tough transitions in life.

Ep 042: How we create a summer bucket list
25:53

I love summer. Aside from the humidity and obnoxious mosquitos, the summer is such a wonderful time to spend together as a family. But as we all know, we start the summer with the best of intentions to do #allthethings and end the summer with the realization that all we did was sit inside next to the AC waiting for school to start again.

A summer bucket list is an excellent way to prepare for the months ahead by deciding what you really want to be doing as a family. In this episode, I'm talking about how we do it in our home and how it's helped us create a summer schedule full of fun without the chaos and FOMO.

Ep 041: How to cultivate a productive (and fun!) summer while the kids are home
29:06

Friends, I have a confession to make: While I usually have a lot of my stuff together, last summer was a real wake up call for me. As a mama who always worked outside of the home, my first summer as a full time work-at-home mom was challenging. Summer (and any season changes in nature and our life) forces us to switch up our routines, for better or worse.

Today's episode is a discussion about how to cultivate a productive summer at home with the kids, while also having fun! There is no need to fall down the rabbit hole of chaos and distress during the summer months. Learn from my mistakes and let's grow together, mama!

In today's episode, I'm throwing down 10 years of experience on the other side of the fence as the owner of a house cleaning business and giving you my best tips and strategies for hiring a professional cleaner.

Ep 038: My "homemakerish" approach to motherhood and how it helps me run my house.
22:15

Homemakerish is one of my favorite words and the backbone of what Mother Like a Boss is all about. The "ish" is your permission to be imperfect, but always striving to be your best.

In this episode, I want to give you my own personal "homemakerish" approach to motherhood and how it helps me run our home from a place of enjoyment and happiness, no perfection needed.

Ep 036: Giving 100% without being a perfectionist
18:04

Perfectionism is a dirty little secret that a lot of us moms keep everyday. Whether it keeps you in a state of paralysis or shows up as procrastination, perfectionism steal our joy and stops us from making progress.

Effort however is far different than perfection. Effort feels good. The end result feels comforting, even if it's not the "perfect" outcome. You can give your all without the need to be perfect. Perfection comes from the outside. Idealism comes from the inside.

In this episode, I'm giving a little pep talk on how to give 100% everyday without having to feed into perfectionistic tendencies that will leave you feeling unsatisfied.

Ep 035: The #1 book that changed my life
33:28

I have always been a person who knows the power of the written word. I embrace that a good book can change our lives if we let it. Over the years, I've read many a book that helped me reach new levels of awesomeness, but none as much as the book I am discussing today.

It is because of Jen Sincero's You Are a Badass that I have transformed by life, my business, my relationship with my kids and my my relationship with myself. Today, I am sharing why this book is so important to me and why I am constantly recommending it to anyone that will listen.

Ep 031: 5 ways I put myself first every day
25:50

I've said it before and I will say it again, the most important person in your life is YOU. Did that make you feel all sorts of weird? We've been fed a line as moms that everyone else should come before us, when in reality, putting yourself first is the most compassionate thing you can do for others.

When I'm in a place of alignment with my own self, I show up as a more amazing mom, wife, friend, mentor, sister and human being. This episode is dedicated to the mom that has been in last place on her to-do list for too long. It's time to go first, friend.

We live in a time where there is (thankfully) a lot of talk about self-care. But what happens when you're in a mom that's not into pedicures and massages? How do you make sure you are taken care of? I had the pleasure of interviewing Shelly Robinson from Alively and I know you will fall in love with her as much as I have.

As the founder of Alively, a self-care subscription box, Shelly is on a mission to spread hope and wellness to moms so that they know down to their core that they are worthy of a happy, purposeful life.

We're discussing how to put yourself first as a mama in traditional and non-traditional ways and how to create a mindset of worthiness so you can be the best for everyone else.

Ep 029: How routines (and grace) helped me survive my postpartum season
30:25

The postpartum season of life brings about a lot of joy, a lot of tears and many times, a lot of emotions we aren't prepared for. In my care, that emotion was anxiety. After waiting 6 years to have another baby, I was thrust back into baby mode and honestly, wasn't prepared. I spent many nights sobbing, wondering how I was ever going to get back on track. My new routines (and a whole lot of grace) saved me.

While routines will not be the fix for all moms in this difficult stage, especially those dealing with crippling depression, it gave me more peace than I had in a long time. The predictability of my routines gave me strength and handed me some of the control I felt like I lost when I gave birth to my precious boy.

This is another heart-driven episode that I am honored to share with you.

Ep 028: How to get started with cleaning and household routines
29:51

"Ok. I know I need better routines. I'm ready for this. I'm gonna do it. I am mom, hear me roar. Uh...so...where do I start?"

I've been there. Starting something new and wanting to stick to it can be tough, but I've learned a thing or two over the years about how to truly begin a winning routine that will create ease and joy in your home.

Remember, your routines should fit into your life, not the other way around. Let's do this together, mama!

Ep 027: What are priorities, really and why are they so valuable
25:18

As mamas, we like to think we have our priorities in order. Obviously, our kids take top billing, but what about the other very important people in our lives, like ourselves?! Priorities can be tricky because we convince ourselves that they are set in stone when in reality, our priorities can change day to day, even minute to minute. What's more important than sticking to one set "most important thing" is realizing what is most important to you in the moment and staying the course with that.

This episode dives into the feelings and emotions behind our priorities and how we can make better choices (and set better boundaries) to be certain that every step we take is with intention and purpose.

Ep 026: How I set homemakerish goals for my home and life
39:27

I'm pretty intent on living my best homemakerish life and a big part of making that happen is setting clear and intentional goals for my home and life. Goals don't need to be grandiose. They don't need to feel like unattainable dreams. Goals are nothing more than the end result you want to achieve. They are the last stop on the GPS. Where are you headed and where do you want to end up? You can't plot your course if you don't know where you want to be.

This episode is all about how I set goals for my home, my business, my family and my life and the process I take to ensure that I actually achieve those goals (rather than procrastinating watching yet another episode of Breaking Bad for the 19th time...)

Ep 025: When grace becomes an excuse
19:48

There may be nothing that moms in our world need more than a heaping spoonful of grace. We're bombarded with images of perfectionism wherever we turn and knowing when to give ourselves the grace not to give into that is a beautiful thing.

But what happens when the grace we give ourselves and others becomes a cycle of excuses? What happens when the seasons of life we've been struggling through aren't seasons anymore, but just out life? Are we truly giving ourselves grace, or are we swinging to the other side of the pendulum by making excuses to avoid our fear of failure in any area of our life?

Ep 024: How to build financial freedom for your family w/ Micala Quinn
35:13

Have you ever thought about what it would be like to stay home with your babies and provide financial freedom for your family? Maybe you've dreamed of having a business on the side to bring in extra cash while staying home to raise the kids or homeschool. My guest today is here to give you the deets on how that's possible.

Micala Quinn from Live Free Mama is here to share her story of quitting her job to be home with her kids and finding a new endeavor in virtual assisting which helped her bring in money for her family. She now helps other moms do the same. This is highly valuable for any mamas out there that think they don't have any skills to share with the world. I'm also giving some pretty blunt (but loving) advice on delegating the tasks out to everyone in your home. You shouldn't be the only one busting your hump to deep clean the house, mama.

Ep 022: A homemakerish guide to spring(ish) cleaning- Part 1
41:20

It's that most wonderful time of the year for your house. It's time for spring cleaning. Time to break out the extra cleaning supplies, roll up your sleeves and get to work...or not.

I have a different approach to spring cleaning. It doesn't need to be done in the spring. In fact, it should get done multiple times a year to save you the arduous task of having to spend entire weekends scrubbing and wiping for hours on end.

In this two part episode, I'm going to break down how to go about your spring(ish) cleaning, whether you're getting down to it in early April or late October, or both.

Ep 021: How we live with minimal paper
35:47

Truth be told, I really hate paperwork. I love to organize it, but I hate having it clutter up my home and my life. My husband and I have an unspoken rule in our house that we will keep the papers to a minimal, but that can be really difficult for people who hold on to the notion that papers are more important than they actually are.

Today's episode is all about my journey to minimize the amount of paperwork we bring into and keep in our home. If our family of 4 (2 of whom own businesses) can do it, you can too, mama!

Ep 020: How to mother like a boss on purpose w/ Kelsey Van Kirk
54:29

How often do you feel like you're just going through the motions of motherhood? Where there used to be intention, there seems now to be a discouraging cycle that you don't even remember becoming a part of. Today, I'm pleased to have my friend Kelsey Van Kirk on to have an open and honest discussion about what purposeful motherhood looks like and her feelings about being created for the life we live.

We veer away from the normal "Here's a bunch of tips." kind of episode and instead get to the heart of the matter. We also dive into perfectionism and how it is ridding us women of joy and purposefulness.

Ep 019: My home birth story and what it taught me about mommy judgement- Part 2
42:17

In part 2 of this episode all about my home birth story and how it influenced my feelings about mommy judgement, I dive into the real story of my pregnancy and eventual birth of my son. This story is raw and real, good parts and bad. I give you a glimpse into how everything went down, and how I felt afterward about my choices.

I also impart my feelings on how we can not only see how others are judging us, but learn to be less judgmental ourselves.

Ep 018: My home birth and what it taught me about mommy judgement- Part 1
33:34

This episode comes straight from the heart and took me quite a while to finally decide I would record. Not because I didn't want to talk about it, but because I knew it would be emotional for me. This is part 1 of of a two part series dedicated to my home birth and what it taught me about mommy judgement.

You'll hear me discuss how I decided that home birth was right for us, what kind of research I did and eventually, the discouragement I felt when I received unsolicited advice and opinions. While home birth is the topic, this can go for any mommy topic out there.

Ep 015: The power of momentum over motivation
27:31

How often do you sit around waiting to be hit with a rush of motivation to do what you know you should do (but don't want to) only to realize that motivation just isn't coming? Motivation is a desire or willingness to do something, but what do you know about the 99% of tasks in your life you have no desire to do, but know you need to? That's where momentum comes in.

This is a topic I preach quite a bit to my students, because waiting for motivation to do something you don't want to do is a procrastination technique. In this episode, I'm getting real about why momentum is the real key to productivity and ending procrastination.

Ep 013: Simple ways to uncomplicate your to-do lists
32:12

We live abundantly full lives as moms, and sometimes our to-do lists read more like novels than easy-to-follow reminders. I used to be obsessed with list making and even call myself a recovering junkie. The truth is, I used my to-do lists as a way to procrastinate what I actually needed to do.

Rather than continue down the path of too many things, let's uncomplicate our lists and make room for more joy and freedom. This episode is full, but one that I know you can use to help implement less cluttered to-do lists into your life.

26:49

Oh laundry. That task that seems never ending. The chore that, the second it is done, turns around and mockingly says, "Just kidding, girl. You ain't done with me." Truthfully, I'm not a big fan of doing laundry, but over the years, I've made an effort to enjoy it (as much as one can enjoy folding clothes over and over every day...) and make it easier to complete.

This episode is all about the hacks and tips that have helped me master my laundry game so I spend less time folding and more time enjoying my life, with clean clothes.

Sami Womack from A Sunny Side Up Life is here today with an excellent perspective on how to live an abundant, joy-filled life through budgets and smart financial decisions. She has a passion for teaching moms how to live a more free and positive life, and how to look at their finances through new eyes, even when it seems daunting.

Ep 009: How I'm raising kids who help around the house
29:26

I decided a long time ago (well, when I started having kids, really) that I wouldn’t be the only one in the house cleaning, doing laundry to tidying up. I wanted to create a community in our home, one where everyone does there part based on what they are capable of. This is exactly what we’ve done and with an 11 and 5 year old, I am able to step back and let them help.

Not only does creating cleaning routines and chores for your children take the load off of the parents, it’s a learning experience for them as well. I’m a big believer in creating responsible little humans who understand that their messes are their responsibility, and that when we all work together, things get done faster. It isn’t always easy, but I’m going to share some of my best tips for raising kids who help around the house (without you having to nag nag nag)

Ep 008: When you're not the mom who makes cute Valentine's crafts
19:55

We can't all be the moms that take the time to make intricate Valentine's crafts, or decorate our house to the nines for St Patrick's Day. But for those that do spend the time focusing on those tasks, we salute you. This episode is all about embracing the kind of mom you are, and forgetting the overpowering obligation to be all things to all people.

I am passionate about this subject and brought this episode to you as a way to remind you that you are allowed to be the kind of mom you want to be without the pressures from social media, society, your family or even yourself.

37:19

Affirmations have been an absolute game-changer in my life and as a mother. Why? Because when I became aware of how my words affected my reality, I was more conscientious of which words I used. Ep 001: Is homemaking still important in 2018?
27:03

Homemaking is something I talk a lot about in my business, but I didn't start out that way. I used to completely shy away from the word, thinking it was totally antiquated and not at all fitting to who I was or what I did. There are a lot of myths floating around about homemaking and it is my mission to bring those myths to light, squash them and show moms that even the most modern women can be homemakerish without shame. Today, I want to answer the question, is homemaking really still important in 2018?

In this episode we'll dive into:

  • What homemaking really is (and what it isn't)
  • How home management and homemaking work together to give you an organized house and warm home.
  • Why I used to feel so negatively about homemaking and what helped me changed that.
  • How one person's insensitive comment to me about moms gave me the confidence to teach even more homemaking tips and strategies.
  • Why homemaking and martyrdom don't have to be the same thing.
  • What we can do as modern women to embrace homemaking and home management (hint...it involves delegating the work to other people!)
  • Some common myths about modern homemaking and how we can finally let go of them.
