Soon college starts and soon parents will not have the day to day engagement with their teens. We know college can be the best of days. We also know that college is the big test to see if your teen learned all of the lessons you have taught them for so many years. Have the tough conversation about alcohol and drugs, and then repeat it. Temptation looms. Parents and Teens Together

Temptation is always there. It is a difficult foe to master. It is even harder when we are tempted while in large groups of others who already are succumbing to the temptation you wish to avoid. Summer music festivals can be a blast....as long as you don't get blasted.

In 1976 Led Zeppelin issued a double Live Album entitled "The Song Remains The Same". CBS new fall schedule includes re-makes of past shows like Murphy Brown, Hawaii 5-O and Magnum PI. And the teens in DUI court who are sentenced are simply making the same mistakes that prior generations have made. Nothing new, just a song that remains the same.

The necessity? Don't become complacent. Leave the world a better place by impacting positive change. Get up, get out, and do something that helps your part of the world.

Just prior to recording this podcast I met with Congressman Bill Foster, US 11th District, who demonstrated his pre-politician chops of being a scientist by continually digging for the better answer. He has a 360 perspective of the addiction problems in our country and we would do well to listen to his thoughts on how mental illness can be a precursor to addiction.

We do not work alone on an island when we are helping our teens make the important decisions of not using alcohol or drugs. Jorie Esser is the Project Coordinator for the DuPage County Prevention Leadership Team. They are a Drug Free Coalition in the northern area of the State of Illinois. This is our first of many interviews that will occur on Positive Alternatives.

Binge Drinking can kill you quickly, or it can kill you slowly. Regardless, the outcome is the same. You leave behind loved ones who ache at your passing. Alcohol is one of the addictions that plague us. We have to be informed and we have to remain focused. Are all drinks the same? Does body size or the sex of the person impact the outcome? We have some answers here that might surprise you.

If I am going to demand in my speeches at high schools that the students persevere, and if I am going to demand from the offenders with whom I speak that they learn from their mistakes.....then I must not expect anything less from myself. This podcast, and all of my podcasts, are a message of perseverance and growth. Together We're Better!

Memorial Day through Labor Day....the 100 deadliest days. Our teens have an abundance of free time during the summer months. As parents we need to remain vigilant and repeatedly encourage our teens to make smart decisions during these not so lazy, hazy days. We owe it to them to be the strong parent. It will be the greatest love we can bestow.

Bench Trials in the DUI Courts include 5 main players. You will have the Judge, the Prosecutor, the Defense, the Arresting Officer, and the Defendant. Each plays a critical role in this process. I have seen well over 50 DUI Bench Trials in the past 18 months and each one is unique. Both sides fight hard for their client and the outcome is not always clear.

Thirteen years ago this Father's Day weekend our son did not come home. He made some poor choices which cost him what was most precious. On Friday the 15th we held a collaborative anti-underage drinking event in our area to spread awareness, teach future leaders, and to honor a boy we miss each and every day.

Forgiveness is within each of us to use. The stress of not forgiving can cause damage to your soul and body. Even in the times of the deepest grief we will ever know; we must forgive before we can truly move forward.

In this episode I share some quick thoughts about teen leadership. There are many teens who give us great hope for the future as they display empathic leadership that shines a light for others to follow. We are so lucky to have so many great young people in our schools and communities.

Our choices define who we are. They define us to our family, our friends, and to whatever our destiny might be. It is best to own your choices, the good ones and the bad ones, and learn from both. Making good choices is not always easy. Making good choices can sometimes be the most difficult thing you have to do at any given moment. Even the best of us can make the wrong choices, the challenge is always....what have you learned from the choice you made.

Why do some people get addicted while others do not? Is it biological, is it weakness, is it an illness some catch while others do not? Many people drink alcohol and not al of them become alcoholics. Is this illness preventable? What can we do working together, to keep our family, our friends, and our country safe from the evil clutch of addiction? Thoughts?

Recently here in the Chicagoland area we have experienced a rash of repeat DUI offenders. In our very first 5 Minute Thought program we wonder if the problem is solely addiction, lack of care by the offender, or a broken legal system. One thing we do know for sure. Only by working together will we be able to make sure that offenders who disregard our collective safety be stopped from getting behind the wheel.

Smart people can make stupid mistakes. In my part time role as Court Monitor in DUI Misdemeanor Court I see many cases come before the Judges. It's not a pleasant experience for the offender. For the Teen offender, however, it is a chance to grow from the mistake, to learn from it, and to not repeat it. Too many teens either choose to drive impaired or get in the car with someone who is driving impaired. Teens need to make the smart choices, the right choices.

April is Alcohol Awareness Month. It is appropriate to raise awareness to alcohol this month as Prom Season is upon us and soon to be followed by Graduation parties. Mom and Dad have to set the expectations, provide a reasoned plan that will let their teen overcome peer pressure, and follow up to ensure the plan was effective. Faily conversations about drug and alcohol use among the teens has to be repeated. Like waves on the beach, a parent sets the expectations, then pulls back, only to have the message reinforced again. Clear, concise, with "I'm not kidding discipline". It's the ultimate labor of love.

In our first episode of Positive Alternatives we discuss the reason behind the effort we are addressing underage drinking and teen drug use. It is necessary for parents and teens to have the conversation, time and again, that underage drinking and drug use are not acceptable. Family expectations must be well established within the framework of raising healthy teens. This is the true labor of love and it is our most important work; preparing for the future by making positive choices in the present.
