Description

Shayna and Tracey of The Pump and Dump Show -- a nationally touring comedy show for moms -- go deeper into what it's like to be a woman who is also a mom.

Episode Date
Our Own Moms Discuss Parenting in the 80's, Their #BandOfMothers, and the Word Vagina
01:01:28

This week we sit down with our moms Lynne and MArsha (who needed stiff drinks for this one, apparently) and talk about what it was like raising kids in a different time, what we were like as kids, and why we're all glad no one gives their baby Hawaiian Punch anymore.

What we thought would be a super fun episode actually turned out to be way more insightful than expected, with a really honest look into what Breeders Before Us have in common and what is so different from then to now.

Also we try to make Tracey's mom say "penis" out loud.

Fact Check: while not the best topic to read about here are some facts about child abductions and missing kids (don't worry, this is a brief discussion, based on Grandmother worry)

Shayna and Tracey have been friends since the 8th grade – that’s over 25 years. After college, they each moved to separate coasts for a decade. They were reunited when they decided to leave big city life and settle down with their families in Denver, Colorado and Facebook told them their daughters are 3 weeks apart. After several play dates, some more childbirth, some unsuccessful pumping, and the overwhelming nature of mommy community boards, The Pump and Dump Show was born.

The show launched in 2012 in a bar in Northwest Denver and quickly grew to a bi-monthly, local staple for new moms to have a night out. In 2014, Shayna and Tracey took The Pump and Dump Show on its first national tour and continue to perform every month to audiences nationwide.

Breastfeeding Success and Heartache: A Conversation for Every Kind of Mom
01:22:31

Whether you're way past the breastfeeding years, whether you're in the thick of it now, or whether or not you even did it, this episode it a really wonderful and fortunate eye-opener. We've wanted to do a breastfeeding episode for ages, and we knew the exact person to do it with: Amanda Ogden of The Mama'hood. What we didn't know - or rather - what we weren't prepared for was a heartfelt, honest, sometimes brutal conversation about breastfeeding that went beyond "how to" and into "why."

Why it's hard, why it hurts, why it's so shameful, why those of us who couldn't do it feel so shameful, why we've all gotten it wrong for like, ever, why giving your baby formula isn't going to ruin your baby and the world, and why there is hope that we can go back to the way things used to be...when we were all in caves.

Give this one a listen, friends. If only to hear Tracey and Shayna cry about their own struggles, and laugh at a paperclip named Stu.

Amanda Ogden, BSN, RN, IBCLC is the Co-Founder of The Mama'hood and Director of Lactation Services & Education. A former nurse, Amanda has dedicated the past 20+ years to normalizing breast feeding and making sure any mom who wants to breastfeed has the support and information to do it right. In the eight years since she opened The Mama'hood Amanda has helped over 25,000 mothers in their breastfeeding journey.

Afterthoughts: Some Things We Learned and Loved from Previous Episodes
53:12

Well we've made it 26 whole episodes, so we thought we'd recap the last 25 to discuss some things we've learned from our special guests along the way.

The truth is, we've learned so much from everyone, but that makes for an uncomfortably long episode so we cover hacks, tips, products and lifestyle changes we've found handy. And maybe Tracey goes into too much detail about her chin hair.

What's been your favorite episode? What have you learned? What's changed your ways?

Thanks for sticking with us for this first batch - here's to 25000 more of The Pump and Dump Podcast!

Moms and Money: Spending Fast and Spending Fasts
58:35

Friends, #BREEDERS, let's get real about money. We love it, we hate it, we love to hate it and we hate that we love it. And then there's debt, and family planning, and kids and omg MONEY!

But what if we loved money? What if we could get ourselves out of debt and never look back? What if we changed our mindset and OWNED money LIKE A BOSS?

Well, that's what we discuss, and we have a lovely guest - Anna Newell Jones - author of The Spender’s Guide to Debt-Free Living: How a Spending Fast Helped Me Get From Broke to Badass in Record Time and Spending Fast guru who shares how she cut back her spending and paid off $24K in a little over a year and never looked back.

But we talk about more than that. For example, maybe we should (and how) all spend a skootch less on Amazon.

And,

Side note: Tracey's underwear and night shirt are *not for sale, and Shay really doesn't want to murder her husband.

And one more thing, friends. Our podcast is about exploring what it's like to be a woman, who is also a mom and all the different perspectives and ideals and ways of life that come with it. We 100% encourage you to take the discussions we have on the pod and do further research using your fine, brilliant and reasonable minds. Always feel free to reach out to our guests with more questions, and do let us know if you've found something that works, or join our private FB group and share your thoughts with an amazingly awesome and supportive #BandOfMothers. Talking and learning is good! Let's do this together!

Ok friends, we're diving into CBD, cannabis, THC, anxiety, inflammation, stress, addiction and lots of things in between. CBD is having a moment right now - BUT WHAT IS IT? What does it do? Is it legal? Will it make you high? Is it just a gimmick? And what about pot? Should we Just Say No or is there more to the story?

Luckily, our special guest, Ashley Kingsley co-founder of Ellamenta.com, is well versed in the weed-o-sphere and just so happens to believe women, in particular, can benefit immensely from all the amazing properties of hemp and cannabis.

We ask her allllll the questions, and to be honest - we get a bunch of mind-blowing answers. We can't wait for you to listen and share your thoughts with us! We learned SO MUCH.

Here's some links from our conversation:

Our Own Birth Stories: The Gauze and the C-Section
01:00:59

If you were ever curious about our own birth stories, then this is your week. None of them was what you would call typical - but is any birth, really? We talk about the good and bad of hospital care, that scary moment you first try to breastfeed and what it must have been like for our husbands.

Spoiler alert: there is misplaced gauze, an event in an elevator, and The Police played very loudly.

Thanks for allowing us to reminisce!

MILF Of The Month: 4 Kids, 2 Parents, 1 RV and a Blog with Jill Krause
52:03

Our MILF (Mother I'd Like To Find Out About) of the Month sold her family's dream home a year ago, got rid of almost all of their belongings, bought an RV and set out to tour the country for a year. She had 4 kids - one of which was a newborn - a husband and a dream of something different - maybe even better - than the suburban life they always thought they wanted.

Jill Krause is a renowned parenting and travel blogger - of Baby Rabies and Happy.Loud.Life fame - photographer, author of two books, and a sought after voice in the blogosphere. We talk about OMG HOW DID YOU DO THIS CRAZY THING?!? Ask her about the nitty gritty details of RV living WITH 4 KIDS (hint: the one bathroom gets ripe) and how she's navigating the transition from a years long career in the momosphere to a rebrand that maybe isn't 100% focused on just kids and being a mom. And of course we ask her how they managed to have sex.

Moms Discuss The Songs: Lies and Swings
53:09

This week we bring back a #BandOfMothers panel, and discuss the meanings behind two original songs from The Pump and Dump Show: Lies and Swings.

If you haven't been to our live comedy show, or heard our music (all available on Spotify, iTunes and Amazon - just search "The Pump and Dump Show") then you'll get to hear two of our most popular songs. After, we have a lively discussion with real moms about the themes from each song...mainly, the lies we told ourselves before we had kids, and even though there are so many things we LOVE to do with our kiddos, there are also a few things we really, really, hate to do.

Enjoy the music, enjoy the round table and let us know what Lies YOU told yourself before you had kids and also do you hate pushing your kid on the swings as much as Shay does? Thank you Nikki and Megan for joining us!

Body Love with Plus Mommy's Jen McLellan
59:37

The truth is there are ALL kinds of moms, but not all moms are wholly represented and most are grossly under-advocated for and mistreated when it comes to health care.

Our guest this week is the luminous Jen McLellan, host of Plus Mommy Podcast and the founder of Plus Size Birth. Jen's story of navigating her own birth plan as a plus size mom-to-be is nothing short of infuriating, and her ideals and perspectives on what this country keeps as priorities when it comes to women is truly enlightening.

Jen's seeks to create an environment of acceptance and end the stigma surrounding plus size pregnancy with education, support, and a sense of humor. She’s also a certified childbirth, educator, wife, and mother to a charismatic 8-year-old.

We have all the questions, we discuss fat vaginas, and we hope you take the time to hear a smart powerful woman talk about how to be smart, powerful, women.

Why Moms Drink: PPD, Peer Pressure, Play Dates and Getting Sober
01:02:22

Today being a mom - especially a new mom - is almost synonymous with drinking. Whether it's the constant onslaught of memes and videos joking about how we all need wine online, social pressure to drink at play dates - or even the zoo - or just the unbearable stress and loneliness that surprises thousands of women after they have a baby, wine culture and the celebration of booze and mommyhood is rampant these days. The truth is, this doesn't adversely affect the lives of many women. However, for some, the pressure to drink, and the accessibility and acceptance of drinking as a mom makes it all too easy to turn something that should be moderately recreational into a big time problem.

In this episode we discuss our role in this world having created a mom's night out and live production called The Pump and Dump Show which is often associated with drinking. We also have a beautifully raw and honest conversation with mom, actress and totally amazing nail technician Glennis McCarthy about what it's like to realize you have a problem with booze as a new mom and then what it's like to finally get sober. We talk about postpartum depression, feeling overwhelmed and blindsided with motherhood, and the joy of loving our kids and our lives just the way they are.

As always, we'd love to hear your feedback and thoughts. Email us anytime at pumpanddumpshowATgmail.com, leave a rating or comment on your podcast app, or tell us IRL and come see us at a show!

MILF of the Month: Tarot, Religion, Miscarriage and All Things Woo with the "Divine" Kristin Rand
01:10:58

Our MILF of the Month (Mother I'd Like To Find Out About) is comedian, mom and tarot reader, Kristin Rand. Kristin's journey to finding love (and then finding herself in Birmingham, Alabama) is pretty darn interesting, but we have, like 10,000 questions to ask her about tarot reading (seriously, WHAT IS IT) crystals, (do they work???) and ALL THINGS WOO.

We realize we've had a few woo podcasts, but Breeders - we need to get to the bottom of this current trend that's sweeping the nation and find out if the woo works, or if the woo is woosh*t.

In addition, we take a side step to discuss Kristin's recent miscarriage and how she healed; and why she's been so open about sharing it.

And then we go back to crystals.

And then she pulls a tarot card for us. Woo Hoo!

If you're totally anti, but still a little curious, we hope you'll take a listen. If you're definitely curious and want to know more, take a listen as well. Shay and Tracey divulge their own recent woo woo adventures and why they think pulling an oracle card might be a good idea for some peace of mind.

No one levitates or meditates and no spells are cast. It's about as friendly a woo conversation you're gonna get, from three moms trying to find their place in the world.

Enjoy!

If you'd like to reach out to Kristin for a reading and such, check out her Instagram page which will lead you to her services and pricing.

As always, we'd love to hear your feedback and thoughts. Email us anytime at pumpanddumpshowATgmail.com, leave a rating or comment on your podcast app, or tell us IRL and come see us at a show!

Please Explain Essential Oils
01:04:02

We're back on the #wellness train this week, exploring WTF is up with essential oils. Tracey loves them, Shay isn't so sure. Do they work? How? And why? Which oils should we buy and where and OMG ESSENTIAL OILS ARE SO CONFUSING!

Join us as we chat with Jennifer Siddens, licensed aromatherapist, autism advocate, wellness advocate and mother of two boys. Her story about her son with special needs and her journey (she hates that word) to oils is compelling, to say the least. We get into a bit of science, and bit of "can we put oils on our girly parts" and we learn why we should all be slathering Frankincense on our boobs.

Whether you're team plant juice or not, this is a darn honest discussion about essential oils with a healthy dose of skepticism and science to round it out. Enjoy!

Follow Jen's gorgeous IG account, @jenniferksiddens. She writes (beautifully) about raising a son with autism, super helpful tips on how to use those oils in times of desperate need and also there's just a lot of pretty photos that will just make you happy.

And if you'd like a free 30 minute consultation, you can DM Jen through IG.

Boogers and Breastmilk with 13-Week Dad, Adam Cayton-Holland
57:26

This week we thought we'd pick the brain of a brand new dad to see what it's like to...be a dad! We know how it feels to be a mom, but we're always curious about the father side of things. Luckily, we were able to have a lively, hilarious and heartfelt conversation from brand new dad, and comedian, and actor and author, Adam Cayton-Holland.

You may have seen Adam's brilliant stand up on Comedy Central, or watched him on TruTV's hilarious comedy, Those Who Can't (which he co-created) or maybe you've read his beautiful memoir Tragedy Plus Time, but we bet you've never heard him talk about how much he loves to get boogers out of his son's nose, or that he really, really can't wait to wash baby bottles. Really.

Enjoy!

MILF Of The Month: Pilates, Disabilities and Lube with Clara Gelatt
55:49

January's MILF (Mother I'd Like To Find Out About) Of The Month is mother of three and founder of Pilates Collective, Clara Gelatt. Not only is Clara an awesome mom, but she's basically a healer. Just ask Tracey. Her journey to becoming one of Denver's most thoughtful and integrative Pilates instructors is equal parts her own desire to help women become strong and healthy + leaning into a mind/body practice that could help her husband with Muscular Dystrophy.

We chat with Clara about balancing three young kids while running a business, what it's like to be married to a man with a disability and in a wheelchair; as well as her frustrations with the lack of post-partum care for women and her philosophy behind how and why she practices Pilates. (Spoiler: it's not to get you skinny.) And then we somehow nose-dive into a brief discussion about lube...but it is absolutely NOT what you think it is about. Listen to it, and then please leave a comment if the "lube talk" happened to you lol.

And speaking of lube...wouldn't you know Shayna has a song from the old days about just that thing, so you're in for a treat with a Shayna Ferm ditty from the archives.

Marriage After Babies and the Curse of Resentment
01:01:34

Wow. This one is a doozy. No matter what state your marriage or partnership might be in, something changes (usually many things) once that first baby arrives. There's irritation, there's miscommunication, there's exhaustion, there's doubt and insecurity and there's a whole lot of resentment.

Thanks to the amazing and insightful feedback from our #BandOfMothers Facebook group, we gathered so many thoughts and perspectives about marriage after kids, and then we basically flooded our guest with all of them.

Join a really raw and honest (and somehow slightly funny) conversation with our amazing guest, Angela Sasseville, relationship expert, mom, wife of 19 years (and counting) and founder of Flourish Counseling and Coaching as we try to figure out why we're so bitter and resentful towards our husbands, and also how do we dig out of those early, dark days of parenting and keep a happy marriage.

Tuck in to this one, breeders. And then head on over to our FB group to continue the conversation if you'd like.

And then! A song about #MTHRFKRS! Enjoy! #dontcallitbabysitting

As founder and Chief Creative Officer she’s the author of Flourish’ proprietary relationship curriculum, Relationships That Not Only Last But THRIVE.  Her self-help guide for couples chronicles the insights and habits needed for marital survival during stressful times and became an award winning book, Families Under Financial Stress. She’s a contributing author to the Amazon best-seller I Choose Me: The Art of being a Phenomenally Successful Woman at Home & At Work by Cynthia James.  Angela has been interviewed by Parents magazine, The Denver Post and the Associated Press.  She has appeared on 9 NEWS, has been featured on PBS, and she has written blogs for MomsRising.org.

The Tale of the Yurt Baby and The Yurt Baby's Tale
01:08:15

Settle in #breeders, because you do not want to miss these two amazing stories. In this week's episode Shayna and Tracey interview a mother and daughter who share their remarkable birth stories. Ahva Lenay had her baby in a yurt at the top of a mountain in the 80's - YES YOU READ THAT RIGHT - and her daughter Niya Gingerich doesn't make it to the mountain for the birth of her own daughter, but it's a home birth with a twist. If you love hearing birth stories, this is for you. If you're curious about births outside the hospital, this is for you. And if you just love hearing tales of bravery, hardship and love from amazing, every day women then THIS IS FOR YOU!

If you're in Denver, Niya and her husband own Local46 on Tennyson Street in the Highlands. Local46 was the birthplace to the very first Pump and Dump Show, and is one of those perfect, welcoming, cozy neighborhood bars that is a staple in the community. They have live music every night, and literally the best beer garden in Denver. Find out more here:

Resolutions Moms Can Keep and Quit with Special Guest Betsy Stover
56:18

Sure it's January, but this episode discusses all the resolutions that moms can keep, and QUIT. What if we let more things go (what up mom guilt) and maybe refrain from piling more massive pressure on our plates? What if we were cool with some smaller accomplishments rather than "I'm going to slay this year and everything is going to be awesome and perfect always?"

Shay and Tracey share their 2019 resolutions - or rather - intentions - because it's 2019 and that's how we talk now. Also, they discuss why they're stepping back from Instagram...but with nothing but love.

And a very special guest: actress, UCB Improv goddess and mom of three boys Betsy Stover of Why Mommy Drinks Podcast shares what's she's thinking about for the coming year, and what she thinks moms need to let go for good.

And last, if you have any great bread recipes or book recommendations, Tracey and Shayna are all in. Oh, and (this is not sponsored) here's our favorite Unpaper Towels aka "Wipe Ups."

MILF Of The Month: Adoption, Race, Divorce and Auctioneering with Debbie Scheer
01:01:27

Our MILF (Mother I'd Like To Find Out About) Of The Month is Debbie Scheer, a fantastically funny, ridiculously talented, and fiercely dedicated mom. She talks about adopting and raising her two black sons, her views on race in this crazy world, navigating a divorce, her love of Costco, and her awesome multi-faceted jobs as a humorist, speaker and auctioneer. Auctioneer!

Our new monthly series follows every day moms and their not-so-every-day stories. We think the women who make up all our lives are infinitely fascinating, so we are spending an episode every month digging deeper into the lives of women around us, who also happen to be moms.

To find out more about Debbie, visit Debbie Scheer Speaks, and if you're in Denver, keep an eye out for this lady (probably at Costco) she's all over the town doing shows, fundraisers and events, and also just at Costco.

And if you're curious, the book she recommends in this episode is called So You Want To Talk About Race by Ijeoma Olou.

Please Explain Makeup
01:16:41

So here's the deal: we're in our 40's and still don't really understand how to put on makeup. We realize that this isn't the most cutting edge of pressing issues to discuss BUT HERE US OUT - we have a feeling a lot of moms don't understand makeup just like us, and we also feel like a lot of moms don't want to watch a YouTube tutorial by a 19 year old.

We decided to bring our friend and internationally acclaimed makeup artist (and mom!) Katelyn Simkins to our podcast table and grill here on all the things we've been dying to know but were afraid to ask. Is lip liner still a thing? What's up with lash serum? (Tracey heard it can make you go blind or change your eye color or something.) What product makes us look old? What product makes us look young? Why does Katelyn love castor oil so much?

It's a riveting hour of clueless femininity and in the end we learned a lot. We hope you do too!

Ask Us Anything! We're Drunk!
55:44

What happens when two comedians force themselves to talk about themselves and answer questions about themselves when they don't really love discussing themselves? They drink Bloody Marys and plow through it.

If you've ever wanted to know a little bit more about Shayna and Tracey beyond what you see at The Pump and Dump Show (and if you want to hear Tracey talk into a straw, because vodka) then settle in for a very lively, very Zing Zang-y "Ask Us Anything" episode.

Some items to note:

*The Bloody Mary mix of choice is: Zing Zang (you can pretty much get it anywhere, it's not expensive at all, and it's in a red and green plastic bottle.)

*Shay and Tracey are STILL discussing their love of Vionic orthopedic slippers.

*If you have any Birding tips (#nerdalert) or know of a good solar powered bird bath for Colorado winters please let Tracey know.

*And Shayna really needs a hobby. (Suggestions welcome.)

Airing Our Dirty Laundry Pt. 2
54:08

We continue our round table conversation about the real way we lead our domestic lives. If you've listened to Part 1, then Part 2 will give you all the intel you've been hoping which is mainly: HOW OFTEN DOES EVERYONE CHANGE THEIR SHEETS? There's more juiciness to this episode than just sheets, however. What other questions do we pull from the fruit bowl? You'll have to listen to get the dirty low-down.

Oh, and because people have been asking, our favorite cozy, orthotic, don't-hurt-our-back slippers are from Vionic. Tracey found them a year ago (maybe more?) when they were listed as one of Oprah's Favorite Things, and they DO NOT disappoint.

Birthing A Business
01:00:49

We've both owned other businesses before we started The Pump and Dump Show, and we discuss the long circuitious road we each took that lead us to our jobs today as the creators, writers, producers and performers of The P&D. We've also struggled to run The Pump and Dump show while also raising a family. Big time. In this episode we discuss the ups and downs of being a mom who owns her own business, and how running a biz is different once you become a mom.

We chat with mom and owner (and ray of sunshine) of Sarah O Jewelry, Sarah Ortega about how she gets it all done, what keeps her up at night, and how she got started in the first place. Then we play a game with her to test her limits of just how bad she wants success.

To be honest, we could have talked for hours on this topic...especially when you hear our #sadcake tale at the end about what happened in Chicago; so maybe we'll dig deeper in a later episode.  But for this episode, we want you to know that being an entrepreneur is a complex, crazy and definitely rewarding life (when it's all going well) which also kind of the same feeling as being a mom. Do you agree?

And last, a big snuggly ball of major love to our friends at Fit4Mom in Chicago for our mistake with your slide at the show. We love you (and all our Fit4Mom friends) and we're sorry the tech gods were out to get us before the show.

If you're a mom in the area looking for a community - a true Band of Mothers - look no further than your local Fit4Mom chapter. Yes, they exercise, but it's so so so much more. And if you're in Chicago - look up https://chicago.fit4mom.com/

The show launched in 2012 in a bar in Northwest Denver and quickly grew to a bi-monthly, local staple for new moms to have a night out. In 2014, Shayna and Tracey took The Pump and Dump Show on its first national tour and continue to perform every month to audiences nationwide.

Urgent Bonus Episode: A Star Is Born
47:42

SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! This is an urgent - maybe bonus? - second episode we had to make because we watched A Star Is Born and we NEED to talk about it. DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE YET. WE WILL RUIN IT FOR YOU.

We think this movie made a lot of moms go out to see movies. Many of the moms we know went on actual dates with their husbands or partners; and a lot of moms went by themselves, which frankly is even better.

We loved this movie SO HARD. To be honest, we loved this movie even before it came out, and it got us thinking...when was the last time we all felt that way about a movie? WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME WE WENT TO A MOVIE? Like a real movie, for adults, with no kids involved...and it was EVERYTHING? Isn't it fun to feel like a kid again?

If you're still swooning and crying over the magic that is Bradley Cooper's greatest achievement, and if you're loving the fact that you're now a die hard Lady Gaga Monster for life, this episode is for you. We interview our publicist, friend and mom of two littles, Laurie Coghlan, about how and why she saw the show; and then we interview former Deputy Editor of People Magazine and pop culture expert + doting dad of 2 year old twins, Peter Castro on his thoughts. Also Shay sings "Shallow" a lot. It's necessary.

Are you as obsessed as we are? Did this movie make you giddy again like back in the good old days? Do you hate Bradley's greasy hair but think he's hella hot anyway? We want to know.

Please Stop Saying #SelfCare
59:00

We've been having an ongoing dialogue for a few months now about how the hashtag #selfcare tends to get under our skin. It's not that we don't believe in taking care of ourselves, it's just that we wonder if it all has to be posted on social? And maybe it's all just getting a little too out of control? Baths with organic flowers, crystals, oils and three different kinds of salt? Is this realistic? Are we alone in feeling this way?

We dive into why the whole self care movement bothers us so much, and explore what it really means to take care of yourself when you're a woman, but also a mom who rarely gets to poop with the door closed.

For some perspective we interview our uber positive and refreshingly straightforward friend, Sarah Zeren who is an in-demand coach and counselor and helps people become the best version of themselves (and maybe she helps us change our attitudes.) And then we interview Tracey's mom on what it was like when she was at home with kids 40 years ago (sorry about the weird audio, we're learning over here.)

If you'd like personal insight from Sarah, you can find her here at http://sarahzeren.com/

We'd love to hear your thoughts as well! Email us anytime at pumpanddumpshowATgmail.com or come see us at a show!
