Christian Topics of a Catholic Nature

Episode Date
Boldness in prayer
23:36

When we hear some talk about prayer, we hear that some prayers are answered with a no. But, in Luke 11, we find a friend being told no before being given the answer to their petition. This shows that God sometimes delays an answer in order to have us grow in faith and not give up until we obtain the thing we request.

Blessed in the Lord

What is the source of your happiness? Is it God? Too often we look to be blessed and forget the source of our blessing. This is something that we are called to reflect on today and realize if we truly love God or just seek results.

True Faith Trusts
22:35

Faith is about trust. You can trust God or you can trust in magical formulas or you can trust in a false gospel. When we consider what it means to move mountains, we must begin with the declaration of Jesus found in Mark 11:22 to: "have faith in God."

Doing the Faith
24:49

How often do you hear about Christians being hypocrites? Probably a lot. This is due to the fact that many do not live out their faith. It is only a Sunday thing, not a lifestyle. But, this is not how we are to live. We are supposed to live out our faith and not just listen to it (James 2:14).

Faith in God
28:05

Our faith must be placed in God and not in anything else. How do we do that? By simply realizing that it is God who creates out of nothing and not some "law of faith!"

Fighting to Persevere
28:08

When we are called to be Christians, the one thing we are called to is a fight. We are told that this kingdom is for the violent, because " the violent take it by force" (Matthew 11:12) and that "the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail over it" (Matthew 16:18).

But does this mean we fight in a way that is eternal with others, or is this a "fight of faith" (1 Tim 6:12)?

Our Vocation
20:45

Today's readings are about the calling that God gives to certain individuals and reminds us of the calling that He has for certain persons to a religious life. A calling that mirrors our call to be part of the family of God.

God always takes what we have, whether they be nets, a boat, zeal or even our unclean lips and makes them more effective by His grace to be what He designed them to be.

So what do you bring that He can use? What vocational use can be made of what is in our hands?

Led by the Spirit
26:45

Being led by the spirit is a matter of spiritual training. It is a training of the conscience that requires knowing what God has revealed, making it the most important thing that you focus on, practicing it in your everyday life and really trusting the way in which God leads you. For if you will put to action these four principles you will develop spiritually and be more the child God seeks to have fellowship with.

What does it mean to be a Temple of God? Do you know the real wonderful blessing that is yours because God has chosen you to be His dwelling place?

Too often we live lives that are full of the wrong things because we seek the pleasures of the world and forget the God who made everything. He seeks our love, our cooperation. And, if we will give Him our love and cooperation our lives will be much more than we can imagine.

Being a New Creation
27:28

At the heart of the gospel proclamation is the message that we are new creatures. There is a new birth of our souls that is the seed of redemption for our complete human nature. If we can grasp this it will cause us to see how we relate to each other in a communion of fellowship with God.

Redeemed Body and Soul
26:11

Too often people limit the grace of God to only a spiritual redemption. They end up seeing their struggle with temptation as a fight they cannot win because their nature is corrupted and they are too weak to overcome sinful desires. Or they only see ailments in their bodies as a hindrance that they will never overcome. But, redemption is something that has been acquired for our entire being, body and soul. This was the message found behind the Theology of the Body message of St. John Paul II. And if we will understand this, we too can become saints and overcomers in the world through the redemption we inherit as part of the communion of saints.

Blessed By Love
28:33

Jesus did not have honor in his home town. There they knew of his history. They knew him as a little boy that did no miraculous deeds. And, when he came home as a celebrity they wanted him to amaze them. But, when he told them that they would not see the miraculous because of how they perceived him, they got mad. They wanted to kill him. They acted in a very unloving manner.

But, God calls us to love. To be merciful. And this is the lesson for today.

True Prosperity
30:10

In recent decades there has been a great confusion over whether or not one can have mansions and money and things and be a righteous person. This is due in part to a war that has been ongoing between those of the prosperity gospel message and those who see poverty as a sign of humility.

But, the answer to which of these perspectives is truly proper is something that the catechism informs us is based on our detactment from the things of this world and our stewardship of them before God. Because in Christianity our relationship with God is paramount. We must love the Lord our God above all things and not have a love of money or some other gain.

when we sin we lose the place that we could have of fellowship with God. It is because of sin that many people have a religion rather than a relationship with God. Order and your place
26:41

Today's readings cover two related topics. The first from Nehemiah and the Gospel we find the basis for the way we do the Liturgy of the Word and why Communion follows the proclamation of the Word.

The second topic reveals why certain people do certain things and others can't. It is because there is diversity in the body of Christ. For instance, why are men and not women allowed to be priests? It is because not everyone can be an eye or a mouth. The body of Christ needs all it's separate parts to function and not try to be something it is not. God created individuality, not robots that fit a cookie cutter.

More than A prayer declaration
27:41

What does it mean to make a confession of faith unto salvation like Romans 10:9-10 declares we must do? Does it mean to make a sinners prayer? Or maybe it means to just make some kind of declaration of Christian faith? Are all these things necessary for salvation or the means by which we acquire the salvation that comes to us from God?

Simply as Catholics, we believe that there is an ongoing work of salvation that each one of us must participate in. It is something that begins with our baptism and continues throughout the remainder of our lives until we die and go before the judgment seat of Christ. To many Protestants, this seems to be a works styled solvation. Yet one of their core Scriptures in Romans, specifically the declaration from Romans 10:9-10, it would appear that there is some act that each one of us must do in order to be saved. This act is more than just a prayer declaration of faith. It is a continual work that we must mix with our faith in the sense that James talked about in his second chapter in order for faith to not be dead. To truly have a living faith and that is our topic today.

Called Not Convertd
23:10

Today is the Feast of the Conversion of St Paul. It is a day in which throughout the Catholic world we consider just how Paul the Apostle while on the road to Damascus Experienced a life-changing event that turned a persecutor of the faith into it's greatest champion.

Yet, when we consider the way Paul talked about this event, we come to see that he did not regard it as a conversion event, but rather as a prophetic call. Paul was not one who abandoned his Jewish faith for a Christian gospel. He saw rather a call to bring in the nations (i.e. Gentiles) into the one family of God that is now the Church.

Believing in Spiritual Realities
30:05

Faith trust in God and believes in spiritual realities. Realities that are just as real as you table and chair or any other physical thing you can think about. This is why faith is the evidence of things not seen. It is ut realizing something beyond the senses and holding on to that reality, because of the relationship we have with God.

Believing with the Heart
29:01

In both Romans 10: and Mark 11:23 we are told that we must believe with the heart but what does this mean? Are we to believe with some part of our anatomy or from a particular part of our being? The answer lies in knowing that we ought to believe as an act of our wills, determining to believe God completely and without a reservation at all.

Faith and Feelings
34:53

When we are asked to believe, is it meant that we are to take a "leap of faith" and blindly trust in a reality that is not logical or scientific? The answer to this is simply a no. In fact to do such is very foolish and not real faith.

Sure there is a "walking by faith and not" sight that is part of any faith. You do not have to be in Paris to know that there really is an Eiffel Tower. Nor do you have to see the Grand Cayon to know it is a real place. There are things that we can know without some false proof that is more of a denial of truth than a legitimate acceptance of reality.

The truths that we are called to believe in by faith are basic realities that we can know by how we perceive them. This is where our feeble senses faith and we walk by faith.

Manifesting Grace
25:06

With today's readings from the mass, we are given a picture of how faith is more of a relationship than a religious thing. We are called into a relationship that is a marriage. At the wedding of Cana, Jesus turned water into wine. We see how Mary represents us in bringing a prayer petition and see how cooperating with the grace in obedience water became wine. All of this showing us how we are to believe and live for Him and experience a manifestation of the reality of a spiritual reality by our relating to God as we ought.

Faith to Persevere
36:02

What is the message about grace that we are being taught in the scriptures that talk about believers speaking in other tongues? Is it that we all need to be speaking in other tongues or that it is an example of how we cooperate with God's grace? The answer is simply that it is a practical example of how we act in faith. A how we are to cooperate with grace and receive the blessings and realities promised to us by God in faith.

Faith and Hope
36:03

Too often we pray with hope and not in faith. This is the reason many of us do not have answered prayers. Other times we pray in faith when we ought to be hopeful instead. And, this too causes people to think there can be no definite answer to prayer. That God says, "Yes," or "No," or "Wait" to our prayers.

But, if we will learn just how to pray and believe, we can move mountains and be effective in prayer.

How We Get Faith?
28:42

Faith comes by hearing (Romans 10:17). We have to hear the gospel to believe in it. We do not just reason it out all by ourselves. It is not an intellectual exercise. It is a trust. A trust that is rational and can be supported by evidence, but a trust nonetheless.

What is Faith?
36:08

What does it mean to believe or have faith? Is it possible to know what faith is?

We act in faith all the time. We go to work trusting that we will get paid after doing our jobs as an act of faith. We trust others and what they tell us about the world, like doctors when they tell us to take certain medications or adjust our diets so that we can remain healthy. As a result, we put faith in what we do not see or know that others inform us is a reality. We believe and not just assent that it could be true. We know it to be true because of what someone else tells us. This is faith.

Love that is Stoned
26:24

We often end up bitter because of bad things that happen to us. But, God calls us in those moments to be like Stephen. To overcome persecution with love. A love that is shed abroad in us by the birth of Christ, when God so loved us He became a Man.

At the heart of the gospel is good news. This is what the gospel is. The gospel is good news or a glad tidings. But have you really been grateful for what God has done for you? When He became man to save you, he raised you from the state of being a sinner and saved you by grace. Have you really considered just how different your life is and can be because of this?

Mary was blessed because she believed what God had promised her. It might have sounded far-fetched, but it was something that God did make a reality. Aren't there many times when we lack the faith that believes that God can do the impossible? Wouldn't our lives be changed if we could just believe?

The Joyful Mysteries
42:53

This is the Joyful Mysteries that are found in my book A Rosary Devotional. It can be found at: http://amz.to/2Gncn2y

This praying through includes a few extra prayers to aid in finding the deeper graces and blessings that each of the prayers of the rosary are meant to lead us all into. These additional prayers are found in the opening portion from the Sign of the Cross up to the First Mystery and in the concluding section following the Hail Holy Queen prayer to the final Sign of the Cross.

Each mystery also includes scriptures for meditation with each Hail Mary to aid in keeping you focused on the grace each mystery is to be a channel of grace for. And, such scriptures will help you in turning the devotion of the rosary into a school of the Catholic faith as only the Blessed Mother could provide.
