29 Days of Black History | Day 25 | James Brown
16:51

Today, 2/25/2020, we pay homage to the late great James Brown...

James Joseph Brown (May 3, 1933 – December 25, 2006) was an American singer, songwriter, dancer, musician, record producer and bandleader. A progenitor of funk music and a major figure of 20th century music and dance, he is often referred to as the "Godfather of Soul" and "Soul Brother No. 1".[1] In a career that lasted over 50 years, he influenced the development of several music genres.[2]

Brown began his career as a gospel singer in Toccoa, Georgia.[3] He joined a rhythm and blues vocal group, the Gospel Starlighters (which later evolved into the Famous Flames) founded by Bobby Byrd, in which he was the lead singer.[4][5] First coming to national public attention in the late 1950s as a member of the singing group The Famous Flames with the hit ballads "Please, Please, Please" and "Try Me", Brown built a reputation as a tireless live performer with the Famous Flames and his backing band, sometimes known as the James Brown Band or the James Brown Orchestra. His success peaked in the 1960s with the live album Live at the Apollo and hit singles such as "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag", "I Got You (I Feel Good)" and "It's a Man's Man's Man's World".

During the late 1960s, Brown moved from a continuum of blues and gospel-based forms and styles to a profoundly "Africanized" approach to music-making that influenced the development of funk music.[6] By the early 1970s, Brown had fully established the funk sound after the formation of the J.B.s with records such as "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine" and "The Payback". He also became noted for songs of social commentary, including the 1968 hit "Say It Loud – I'm Black and I'm Proud". Brown continued to perform and record until his death from pneumonia in 2006.

Brown recorded 17 singles that reached No. 1 on the Billboard R&B charts.[7][8] He also holds the record for the most singles listed on the BillboardHot 100 chart which did not reach No. 1.[9][10] Brown was inducted into 1st class of the Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2013 as an artist and then in 2017 as a songwriter. He also received honors from many other institutions, including inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame.[11] In Joel Whitburn's analysis of the Billboard R&B charts from 1942 to 2010, Brown is ranked No. 1 in The Top 500 Artists.[12] He is ranked No. 7 on Rolling Stone's list of its 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Rolling Stone has also cited Brown as the most sampledartist of all time.[13][14]

29 Days of Black History | Day 24 | Lil Kim
21:02

2/24/20, we pay homage to Lil Kim..

Kimberly Denise Jones (born July 11, 1974 or 1975),[1] known professionally as Lil' Kim, is an American rapper, songwriter, model, and actress. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, she lived much of her adolescent life on the streets after being expelled from home. In her teens, Jones would freestyle rap, influenced by fellow female hip hop artists like MC Lyte and The Lady of Rage. In 1994, she was discovered by fellow rapper The Notorious B.I.G., who invited her to join his group Junior M.A.F.I.A.; their debut album, Conspiracy, generated two top 20 singles in the United States and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Lil' Kim's debut studio album, Hard Core (1996), was certified double platinum by the RIAA, has since sold more than 6 million copies worldwide,[2]and spawned three successful singles: "No Time", "Not Tonight (Ladies Night)", and "Crush on You". Her following albums, The Notorious K.I.M.(2000) and La Bella Mafia (2003), were also certified platinum, making her the only female rapper besides Missy Elliott and Nicki Minaj to have at least three platinum-certified studio albums. In 2001, she was featured on the single "Lady Marmalade" (a remake of the 1974 hit single of the same name, originally recorded by LaBelle), alongside Mýa, Pink, and Christina Aguilera, which topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The remake won two MTV Video Music Awards, including Video of the Year, and a Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals at the 44th Grammy Awards in 2002. Other notable singles from this period include "The Jump Off" and "Magic Stick", the latter of which reached number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

In 2005, Lil' Kim served a one-year prison sentence for lying to a jury about her friends' involvement in a shooting four years earlier. During her incarceration, her fourth album, The Naked Truth, was released to positive reviews from critics; it remains the only album by a female rapper to be rated five mics out of five by The Source. A reality series covering her sentence, Lil' Kim: Countdown to Lockdown, premiered on BET in 2006. She released her first mixtape, Ms. G.O.A.T., in 2008 and returned to the public eye in 2009 with an appearance on Dancing with the Stars. Throughout the 2010s, she continued to release music and perform sporadically, collaborating with artists such as Faith Evans, Remy Ma, and Fabolous. Her fifth studio album, 9, was released in 2019.

Lil' Kim has sold more than 15 million albums and 30 million singles worldwide. Her songs "No Time", "Big Momma Thang", and "Not Tonight (Ladies Night)" were each listed on Complex's list of the 50 Best Rap Songs By Women.[3] In 2012, Lil' Kim was listed on VH1's 100 Greatest Women In Music list at number 45, the second highest position for a solo female hip-hop artist.[4] Lil' Kim was ranked as one of the top 50 greatest MCs of all time in Kool Moe Dee's 2003 book, There's a God on the Mic. Aside from music, Lil' Kim is also known for her risk-taking and luxurious approach to fashion that inspired many artists; she has been cited as a fashion icon.[5][6]

29 Days of Black History | Day 23 | Pimp C
41:52

2/23/20, we pay homage to the late great Pimp C...

Chad Lamont Butler (December 29, 1973 – December 4, 2007), better known by his stage name Pimp C, was an American rapper and record producer. He was best known for his work with Bun B as a founding member of the Underground Kingz (UGK).

Signing to Jive Records in 1992, UGK released their major-label debut album Too Hard to Swallow to positive reviews.[1][2] The group followed this with their second and third major label albums Super Tight in 1994 and Ridin' Dirty in 1996, both of which charted in the Billboard 200 and received critical acclaim.[3][4][5][6] The group received national attention in 2000 after being featured on Jay-Z's hit single "Big Pimpin'", which peaked at #18 on Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Rhythmic Top 40. The group went on hiatus for the first half of the 2000s after Pimp C was sentenced to eight years in prison for a probation violation, during which time both members pursued solo careers, with Pimp C releasing his solo debut, The Sweet James Jones Stories in 2005, composed of material recorded prior to his sentencing. After being released from prison in December 2005, he released his second solo album, Pimpalation the following year, and released UGK's eponymous fifth studio album in 2007, which spawned the hit single "International Players Anthem (I Choose You)" featuring OutKast, which peaked at #70 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Pimp C was found dead in his hotel room on December 4, 2007, with a coroner report attributing his death to complications stemming from heavy consumption of purple drank and his pre-existing condition of sleep apnea.[7][8]

29 Days of Black History | Day 21 | Ice-T
16:08

Today, February 21, 2020, the boys pay homage to Ice-T...

Tracy Lauren Marrow (born February 16, 1958),[1] better known by his stage name Ice-T, is an American musician, rapper, songwriter, actor, record producer, and author. He began his career as an underground rapper in the 1980s and was signed to Sire Records in 1987, when he released his debut album Rhyme Pays; the second hip-hop album to carry an explicit content sticker after Slick Rick's La Di Da Di. The following year, he founded the record label Rhyme $yndicate Records (named after his collective of fellow hip-hop artists called the "Rhyme $yndicate") and released another album, Power, which went on to go Platinum. He also released several other albums that went Gold.

He co-founded the heavy metal band Body Count, which he introduced on his 1991 rap album O.G.: Original Gangster, on the track titled "Body Count". The band released their self-titled debut album in 1992. Ice-T encountered controversy over his track "Cop Killer", the lyrics of which discussed killing police officers. Ice-T asked to be released from his contract with Warner Bros. Records, and his next solo album, Home Invasion, was released later in February 1993 through Priority Records. Body Count's next album was released in 1994, and Ice-T released two more albums in the late-1990s. Since 2000, he has portrayed NYPD Detective/Sergeant Odafin Tutuola on the NBC police drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

29 Days of Black History | Day 20 | Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson
22:54

2.20.20 we pay homage to Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson...

Dwayne Douglas Johnson (born May 2, 1972), also known by his ring name, The Rock, is an American actor, producer, investor and retired professional wrestler.[9] Johnson was a professional wrestler for the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) for eight years prior to pursuing an acting career. His films have grossed over $3.5 billion in North America and over $10.5 billion worldwide,[10] making Johnson one of the most successful and highest-grossing box-office stars of all time.[11]

Johnson was a college football player for the University of Miami, with whom he won a national championship in 1991. He initially aspired for a professional career in football and entered the 1995 NFL Draft, but he went undrafted. As a result, Johnson signed with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League (CFL), but was cut from the team in the middle of his first season. Shortly after, he began training as a professional wrestler.[12]

In 1996, Johnson secured a contract with the WWF and was promoted as the first third-generation wrestler in the company's history, as he is the son of Rocky Johnson and grandson of Peter Maivia. He rose to prominence after developing a charismatic persona of a boastful trash-talking wrestler named The Rock. He subsequently won his first WWF Championship in 1998 and helped usher the WWF into the "Attitude Era", a boom period in the company's business in the latter 1990s and early 2000s which still hold professional wrestling records for television ratings.[13] In 2004, he left the WWE to pursue an acting career and went on a seven-year hiatus before returning in 2011 as a part-time performer until 2013, before wholly retiring in 2019.

Considered to be one of the greatest professional wrestlers and biggest draws of all-time,[14][15] The Rock headlined the most-bought professional wrestling pay-per-view event ever, WrestleMania XXVIII, and was featured in among the most watched episodes of WWE's television shows, WWE Raw and WWE SmackDown.[16][17] He has won several championships, being a two-time Intercontinental Champion, a five-time tag team champion, and a ten-time world champion.[18] He was also a Royal Rumble match winner and WWE's sixth Triple Crown champion.

Johnson had his first acting role in The Mummy Returns (2001), and played his first lead role in the spin-off The Scorpion King (2002). He has since starred in numerous other successful films, including The Rundown (2003), Walking Tall (2004), The Game Plan (2007), Get Smart (2008), Race to Witch Mountain (2009), Tooth Fairy (2010), Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012), G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013), Pain & Gain (2013), Hercules(2014), San Andreas (2015), Central Intelligence (2016), Moana (2016), Rampage (2018), and Skyscraper (2018). Johnson's most successful box office role has been Luke Hobbs in The Fast Saga films. He first appeared as the character in Fast Five (2011) and helped catapult the film series into one of the top-grossing movie franchises in history.[19] He starred in the sequels, Fast & Furious 6 (2013), Furious 7 (2015), The Fate of the Furious(2017), and the spin-off film Hobbs & Shaw (2019).[20] Another notable franchise starring Johnson is the Jumanji franchise, as he has starred in the successful films, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017), and its sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level (2019).

Johnson also starred in the HBO series Ballers starting in 2015. The show ran for five seasons and was ranked as HBO's most watched comedy in six years.[21]

Johnson has also attained success as an author and producer.[22][23] In 2000, he released an autobiography titled The Rock Says... which debuted at number one on The New York Times Best Seller list.[24][25] In 2012, he founded the entertainment production company Seven Bucks Productions, which has since produced several films.[26] Consistently ranked among the world's highest paid actors,[27] Johnson made the Time 100 Most Influential People in the World list in both 2016 and 2019.[28][29] Johnson is a dual citizen of both the United States and Canada.[1]

29 Days of Black History | Day 17 | Snap Music
23:25

Today, 2/17/2020, we pay homage to Snap Music...

Snap music (also known as ringtone rap or snap rap) is a subgenre of hip hop music derived from crunk[2] that originated in the South in the late-1990s, in Bankhead, West Atlanta, the United States.[3] It achieved mainstream popularity throughout the mid-late 2000s, but declined shortly thereafter. Popular snap artists include D4L, Dem Franchize Boys and K-Rab.

Tracks commonly consist of an 808 bass drum, hi-hat, bass, snapping, a main groove and a vocal track.[3] Many snap songs may also incorporate whistling.[4] Hit snap songs include "Do It to It" by Cherish, "Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It" by Dem Franchize Boys, "Snap Yo Fingers" by Lil Jon, "Laffy Taffy" by D4L, "It's Goin' Down" by Yung Joc and "Crank That (Soulja Boy)" by Soulja Boy Tell 'Em,[3] and voted one of "The 15 Best Snap Music Songs Of All-Time" is "Look At Her" by One Chance.[5]

Crunk has been called the "predecessor of snap".[3][6] Hip hop DX magazine described snap music as a "laid back version of its forbearer, crunk music".[7]

Emerging from East Harlem, New York in the early to mid-1990s, Coleman became well known amongst underground hip-hop fans for his freestyling ability, and was eventually signed to Columbia Records, where, in 1995, he released his debut album, Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous, an album that is now considered by many fans to be a classic[citation needed]. He was often referred to as "The Genius."[3][4] Charles started losing his vision at the age of 6 due to glaucoma.[2]

Charles pioneered the soul music genre during the 1950s by combining blues, rhythm and blues, and gospel styles into the music he recorded for Atlantic.[2][5][6] He contributed to the integration of country music, rhythm and blues, and pop music during the 1960s with his crossover success on ABC Records, notably with his two Modern Sounds albums.[7][8][9] While he was with ABC, Charles became one of the first black musicians to be granted artistic control by a mainstream record company.[5]

Charles' 1960 hit "Georgia On My Mind" was the first of his three career No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. His 1962 album, Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music, became his first album to top the Billboard 200.[10] Charles had multiple singles reach the Top 40 on various Billboardcharts: 44 on the US R&B singles chart, 11 on the Hot 100 singles chart, 2 on the Hot Country singles charts.[11]

Charles is a 17-time Grammy Award winner.[10] He was honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987; 10 of his recordings have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.[10]

Charles cited Nat King Cole as a primary influence, but his music was also influenced by Louis Jordan and Charles Brown.[12] He became friends with Quincy Jones. Their friendship lasted until the end of Charles's life. Frank Sinatra called Ray Charles "the only true genius in show business," although Charles downplayed this notion.[13] Billy Joel said, "This may sound like sacrilege, but I think Ray Charles was more important than Elvis Presley".[14]

In 2002, Rolling Stone ranked Charles #10 on their list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time,"[3] and #2 on their list of the "100 Greatest Singers of All Time" in 2008.[15]

29 Days of Black History | Day 14 | 50 Cent
26:50

Today, 2/14/2020, we pay homage to 50 Cent...

Curtis James Jackson III (born July 6, 1975),[4] known professionally as 50 Cent, is an American rapper, songwriter, singer, actor, television producer, entrepreneur, and investor. Born in the South Jamaica neighborhood of the borough of Queens, Jackson began selling drugs at age twelve during the 1980s crack epidemic. He later began pursuing a musical career and in 2000 he produced Power of the Dollar for Columbia Records, but days before the planned release he was shot and the album was never released. In 2002, after Jackson released the compilation album Guess Who's Back?, he was discovered by Eminem and signed to Shady Records, under the aegis of Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records.

With the aid of Eminem and Dr. Dre (who produced his first major-label album, Get Rich or Die Tryin'), Jackson became one of the world's best selling rappers and rose to prominence with East Coast hip hop group G-Unit (which he leads de facto). In 2003, he founded G-Unit Records, signing his G-Unit associates Young Buck, Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo. Jackson had similar commercial and critical success with his second album, The Massacre, which was released in 2005. He released his fifth studio album, Animal Ambition, in 2014 and as of 2019 is working on his sixth studio album, Street King Immortal. He executive produces and stars in the show Power, which airs on Starz.[5]

During his career Jackson has sold over 30 million albums worldwide and won several awards, including a Grammy Award, thirteen Billboard Music Awards, six World Music Awards, three American Music Awards and four BET Awards.[6] He has pursued an acting career, appearing in the semi-autobiographical film Get Rich or Die Tryin' (2005), the Iraq War film Home of the Brave (2006) and Righteous Kill (2008). 50 Cent was ranked the sixth-best artist of the 2000s and the third-best rapper (behind Eminem and Nelly) by Billboard.[7] Rolling Stone consider Get Rich or Die Tryin' and "In da Club" to be in their lists of "100 Best Albums of the 2000s" and "100 Best Songs of the 2000s" at numbers 37 and 13 respectively.[8][9]

29 Days of Black History | Day 9| Ice Cube
34:05

Today we pay homage to Ice Cube.

O'Shea Jackson (born June 15, 1969), known commonly by his stage name, Ice Cube, is an American rapper, actor, producer, director and writer.

Ice Cube initially gained recognition in 1986 as a member of the hip hop group C.I.A., which gained limited commercial success prior to disbanding around the time N.W.A formed.[1] Ice Cube, alongside Dr. Dre and Eazy E, formed the group N.W.A, where he gained extreme notoriety as the group's primary songwriter and performer, noted for becoming one of the founding artists of gangsta rap, and pushing the boundaries of lyrical content in mainstream popular music, as well as visual imagery in music videos.[2]

After leaving N.W.A in December 1989, Ice Cube embarked on a successful solo career, releasing the albums AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted (1990) and Death Certificate (1991), both of which have attained platinum certification in the United States, while also being classed as defining albums of the 1990s. Much of his musical output has contained harsh socio-political commentary and storytelling, which has earned him several accolades from multiple publications and artists, often cited as an influence and one of the best rappers of all time.[3][4][5][6][7]

Following the release of Death Certificate, Ice Cube transitioned into film, where his popularity was further enhanced by his starring role in Boyz n the Hood (1991), where his performance was heavily praised. He also wrote and starred in the Friday film series, which contributed to reinventing his public image as a movie star. Ice Cube has also featured in the Barbershop, Ride Along, and XXX film series, while also serving as a producer to several other films, including Straight Outta Compton (2015), a biographical film depicting the career of N.W.A..

As a businessman, Ice Cube has founded his clothing line, Solo by Cube, as well as the 3 on 3 basketball league Big3, which primarily features retired NBA players.

29 Days of Black History | Day 1 | Lil Wayne
25:13

Well damn, the boys are back at it once again. Prior to hitting the one year mark of podcasting, we have been throwing around several ideas off mic to pay homage to multiple inspiring Black/African American figures that left a indelible mark on the world, and we both agreed that celebrating 29 days of Black History would be the best way to shed light on these individuals. Some of the information the next 29 days will be funny, some will be informative and some will just be useful information that you never knew or understood. If you have any suggestions or would like to join the conversation please feel free to leave us a message 214-744-3601 or shoot us an email ppogpodcast@gmail.comSo without further ado these are the 29 days of black history.

Today, February 1, 2020, we pay homage and honor a living legend, Dwayne Michael Carter aka Lil Tunechi aka Fireman aka Birdman Jr. aka Weezy F Baby aka Li Wayne...

Ep 17 | New Level ft. David Morgan
03:03:28

On this episode we had the opportunity to sit down and chop it up with musical artist and author  David Morgan. For lack of a better word, we unpack a lot of sh!t on this episode, sidenote sorry (not sorry) this episode is so long but we heard you like it like that 👀 but we digress. We discuss and inquire on what happen to David and Devin’s group the Mohican’s, find out the origin of the name and how they got sh!t poppin out in Lubbock when they were attending Texas Tech, and other real life experiences that he went through on his journey to get him on his path of artistry. We also talk about our hip hop influences, how Dallas is the bastard city of Texas and often slept on, how to stick out from the crowd by being your authentic self.

For what ever reason we take a flashback to 2007… Did you go to Fubupalooza? Once again Young Thirsty gets clowned again for not knowing any Black movies and we also unpack some things about the grass root stages of puttingpeopleongame.com back when it was simply a blog. Tons and tons and tons of things are unpacked in this episode!

Make sure you follow David Morgan on all platforms @davidfnmorgan on all platforms and also be on the lookout for his new book that will be dropping soon entitled “Talk” and go cop his last joint “Life”, matter fact go visit his site davidfnmorgan.com

A Tribute to Ermias Asghedom 🙏🕊 🇪🇷 🏁
02:00:53

"The best thing you can do for a person is to inspire them. That's the best currency you can offer: inspiration. So, when a person can rely on you for that, that empowers them in every realm of their life. Being inspired. It empowers them in their relationships, in their business, in their art, in their creativity. It empowers them because without inspiration, you're dry." - Nipsey Hussle
