Today's episode is a solo episode (haven't done one of these in a while!!) I started hearing the term "Metabolic Syndrome" more and more often and I thought to myself.... "What the heck is Metabolic Syndrome?!"

I thought I probably wasn't the only person who didn't know what that meant. And since over 88% of the population, according to a new study, is "metabolically unhealthy", I thought I should learn what it meant. 

Well, I looked it up and guess what?! Metabolic Syndrome used to be known as INSULIN RESISTANCE SYNDROME!! 🤯

WHY on Earth is mainstream medicine avoiding using the term INSULIN RESISTANCE when that's exactly what's happening. 

WHY are they NOT using a test of insulin in the criteria to determine if you have Insulin Resistance Syndrome?!?!? 

In this episode, I talk about what the criteria for Insulin Resistance Syndrome is, what is being missed by using this criteria, what marker is the first to go out of range and why it's so important to test this specific marker.

I also talk about what insulin resistance is, the EARLY signs of Insulin Resistance, that this metric is missing. And finally, I talk about how to improve blood sugar and insulin sensitivity.

Dr. Elin Östman is an expert on the preventive potential of food in relation to metabolic syndrome, with special emphasis on blood glucose and appetite regulation. Dr. Elin is the Chief Scientist of GOOD IDEA, Inc.

Before GOOD IDEA, Dr. Elin was an associate professor and senior lecturer in Applied Nutrition at the Food for Health Science Centre of Lund University in southern Sweden. Her 20-year career in academia comprises groundbreaking research on preventive food concepts and healthy diets to reduce lifestyle and diet-related conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

To date, Dr. Elin has been a co-author of 49 peer-reviewed original articles and 3 reviews. She is a frequent speaker at international conferences and events in the field of nutrition and food science, and the co-founder of four food innovation-related start-up companies.

In 2001, Dr. Elin published a paper establishing the connection between the intake of various milk products and surprisingly high insulin responses. Later on, her research group found that intake of whey before and with a meal rich in fast carbohydrates could substantially lower the blood sugar spike following a meal, similar to the “milk mechanism”. The presence of five specific essential amino acids appeared to be significant. An idea of effective blood glucose regulating food products was born, and a joint product development project was initiated with Food & Biotech company Aventure AB.

When Dr. Elin and her colleagues at the Anti-diabetic Food Center isolated the five amino acids and added a small proportion of chromium, well known for its role in blood sugar regulation, the results were significant.

My guest on today's episode is the wonderful Shawn Wells.  He is the author of The Energy Formula, something we all want more of, right?!

Shawn Wells, MPH, LDN, RD, CISSN, FISSN is a product formulator and expert in the fields of performance nutrition, longevity, fitness and supplementation. He earned his master’s degree from UNC-Chapel Hill, where he studied nutritional biochemistry with a minor in exercise science. Shawn is a Registered Dietitian with a decade of experience as a Chief Clinical Dietitian in hospitals and skilled nursing facilities. The episode was inspired by a message I got on Instagram from a girl who told me that she went from a Standard American Diet (SAD) to a very low carb ketogenic diet and 3 days later ended up hospitalized. 

I realized that there's so much info out there on Keto but not enough about what to do to PREPARE yourself to go keto. 

This is nothing to be afraid of because it's easily avoided but it is something to educate yourself on! This episode will give you a BUNCH of things to know and do before you go keto to help prep your body for ketosis so there is a much easier transition and you won't land in the hospital!

I can't even call what I do "meal prepping" because anything involving extra dishes and excessive vegetable cutting gives me adrenal fatigue. And here is Liza's recipe for her Keto Indian-style Chicken:

1-2lbs Chicken thighs
2 tablespoons of ghee
Add ghee to pan, and cook chicken all the way through. 

Then put the following item in a blender/food processor until contents are smoothie consistency:

3 large tomatoes
1 yellow onion
1/4 cup chopped ginger
3+ cloves garlic (I like to add more)
1 tbl Garam masala spice
1 tbl garlic powder
1 tbl onion powder
Salt + pepper to taste

Once the chicken in cooked, pour the mix over the chicken, turn up the heat, and bring contents to a boil. Let it sit at a boil for a short period of time, then bring the heat back down and simmer. Add a can of coconut cream here. Allow the contents to reduce to your liking. 

GARNISH with lots of yummy cilantro. Keto/low carb side dish suggestion: Cauliflower rice, with green peas. Add turmeric and ghee.

Episode 12: Part I - The path to avoiding Type II Diabetes: Signs your blood sugar is dysregulated

This is the first episode in a two part series all about Diabetes. About half of the adults in the United States have Prediabetes or Diabetes, but about a quarter of those individuals don't know they have it!

How can this be?! It's not the fault of the individuals; we have a broken system. My goal is to help you learn what having dysregulated blood sugar feels like and looks like so then you can start taking steps to improve your blood sugar and insulin levels.

Blood sugar is a spectrum. One one end we have regulated blood sugar and on the other, type II Diabetes. Diabetes is completely preventable (and it is reversible too!). Preventing it is easier than reversing it though. Tune in to today's show to learn to identify the signs so your blood sugar can stay or return to healthy levels instead of advancing toward Diabetes.

I also discuss why it's so important to avoid getting Diabetes. It's my understanding that most people don't know what the consequences of having diabetes is. Did you know that Diabetes is the lead cause of blindness and kidney disease in adults? Did you know that even having prediabetes increases your risk of having cardiovascular disease, stroke, and dementia?! This is some serious stuff.

My top goal is to help all of you understand why blood sugar regulation is so important, how to recognize the signs, AND how to test for it and begin to improve it (which we will cover in Part II of this series).

Episode 10: The 11 Reasons You're Not Losing Weight - How to bust through weight loss plateaus

This episode is near and dear to my heart. I have struggled with my weight for just about my entire life. This episode is not meant to shame or judge anyone who is overweight. We need to love our bodies at all stages of our journey. However, I know what it's like to feel like you're "doing everything right" and the scale won't budge. I've actually been in a situation where I was eating well and exercising and not only was I not losing weight, I was actually GAINING! It was so heartbreaking and discouraging.

In this episode, I discuss 11 reasons you might not be losing weight. In those 11, I didn't mention eating sugar and processed carbs (like cupcakes and bagels and pizza). I figured that one was a given!

1.    You’re insulin resistant

2.    You slowed your metabolism by cutting calories or yo-yo dieting

3.    You’re eating foods you’re sensitive to

4.    You’re not fasting/you’re eating too often/You snack

5.    Your body is stressed

6.    You’re not eating real food

7.    Your body is toxic

8.    You have hormonal imbalance

9.    You’re eating when you’re not hungry

10.  You’re doing the wrong type of exercise for your body

11.  You’re trying too hard and/or you’re not mentally ready for it

Fasting is the oldest dietary intervention ever used. It is a practice used in every single major world religion. Fasting is the opposite of feasting. Fasting is free, convenient, flexible, and powerful. It is where we step aside and give our body a chance to heal itself. When we cut our skin, we don't need to do anything for our skin to heal. Our body immediately begins healing. Yes, we might put on a band-aid to avoid dirt from entering the wound, but we essentially are getting out of the body's way so it can do it's thing. This is the same concept with fasting.

Today's topic is digestion. Most people don't think about what happens when food goes in your mouth. We don't just eat because it tastes good and then it comes out the other end. Digestion is an intricate process and proper digestion is so essential for optimal health. But digestion is not one process. There are so many steps in the digestive process and if just one thing goes wrong, it will negatively affect every step that follows.

Digestion is a root cause of so many issues so it's essential that we learn to recognize the signs of when our body is not digesting adequately. In this episode, I list common symptoms associated with issues in the digestive process and give tips on how to try to fix it.

  • 2 packages of okra, 1 onion, 1.5 tbsp ghee, salt, garlic powder, Trader Joe's Mushroom Umami Spice, 1/8 cup of bone broth (optional)
  • Dice onion and saute in ghee until soft. Add salt.
  • Add okra to the pan, sprinkle the spices generously and stir/combine
  • Add the bone broth (or water) and cover for about 5 minutes
  • Uncover and continue cooking until the okra can be cut with the side of a fork
