Behind the Scenes of Building a Garden Coach Business
48:29

Welcome back to the Grow Your Self podcast! We have a brand new series that I'm so excited to share with you today. Today's episode is a bonus and we're going behind-the-scenes in the life of a real life garden coach.

One of my biggest passions is helping gardeners all over the world set up their own garden coach businesses right where they are. We have over 180 members in the Garden Coach Society and we’re growing more every day.

One of our newest members of the society, Ashley Irene of Heirloom Potager, agreed and to join me for a little series we're going to do together as she grows her own -- literally -- garden coach business in California.

In this episode we will discuss:

  • How Ashley decided to start garden coaching.
  • Tips for getting over consultation nerves.
  • More about Ashley’s business Heirloom Potager.
  • My FREE 5-Day Garden Coach Challenge.

What Kitchen Gardens and Yoga Pants Have in Common
53:20

From 2012 to 2016, the number of Americans practicing yoga grew by 50%. In just four years! It's this fact that brings me to my point for today's episode, which is kitchen gardens need to become like yoga pants.

In this episode we will discuss:

  • How Lululemon made yoga pants the norm.
  • How to get your brain out of its rut and start calling yourself a gardener.
  • A deep dive into why I wrote what I wrote in Kitchen Garden Revival
  • The 5 future-pacings I outlined in the preface
  • 3 reasons why you should start your kitchen garden today

Stay tuned for the first chapter for our book club! You can check out the Bloomberg article about Lululemon here.

The Problem with the Plant Store
46:18

How much money have you spent on plants from the plant store? How many of those plants are still alive today?

Today, we are going to dig into the topic of the problem with your plant store. We're going to talk about the gardening industry, what I discovered about the industry early on in my career, and what I'm trying to do to turn the industry upside down.

I know you're going to love this episode. It's full of surprising facts, and it's going to save you a lot of money and frustration and from adding #PlantKiller to your bio.

In this episode we will discuss:

  • Where money in the plant industry is going.
  • Why success only happens with education.
  • The younger generations new-found love for gardening.
  • Why local farmers know best.
  • 3 steps to reverse the curse and expand your garden knowledge.

Cool as a Cucumber
42:29

Welcome back to the Grow Your Self podcast. Today I'm talking about one of my favorite plants to grow in the garden, mostly because it never gets wasted. I really think there's nothing better than a cucumber straight from the vine in the garden. We're going to learn why it's so fun to grow your own and how to do so in today's episode.

But first, ‘cool as a cucumber’ where did that even come? Physicians in the 17th Century would prescribe a fever patient to go lay down on a bed of cucumbers. No really, I'm serious.

In this episode we will discuss:

  • History of cucumbers and their tasty transformation to pickles.
  • How cucumbers benefit our health in so many different ways.
  • The 5 States where cucumbers are mainly grown.
  • Tips on how to grow cucumbers in your own kitchen garden.
  • Food fight between cucumbers and zucchini.

This Should Bug You
44:49

This should bug you, that’s what we’re talking about today on the Grow Your Self Podcast. We’re digging into the bug stuff today!

Let’s talk about what’s going on with your food, with pests, why are pests even in our gardens in the first place. What does that indicate and mean to us? I’m going to tell you three things; three truths you can count on in regards to pests and your food. Then we are going to talk about five steps to keep your garden organic and as pest-free as possible.

Key words there “as possible.” Because pest-free is pretty much an impossibility, but we're going to talk about how to take a few steps, and use things we do with our clients, to keep our garden organic and as pest-free as possible.

In this episode we will discuss:

  • Bugs in general all over the world, in nature eat healthy plants.
  • There is more to your food than you originally thought. (Pesticides & byproducts of pesticides)
  • Remove the visible damage and do some searching and remove every pest that you can find by hand.
  • Remove additional plant stressors.
  • Nourish the plant and then help the plant fight for itself.

Eat This All Summer Long
38:11

You know summer is the time of bounty, when farmers and gardeners are pulling the most from their fields and gardens. But, what should you prioritize when you head to the market, to the farmers market, to the grocery store, or even your own backyard, this summer. That's the question we'll dive into on today's grow yourself podcast.

Today's podcast is brought to you by a very important initiative called Black Sanctuary Gardens, Black Sanctuary Gardens is a project started by my friend; a leader in the edible landscape design field, Leslie Bennett. Leslie Bennett's book, “The Beautiful Edible Garden,” is one of the first books I ever read that taught me all about edible gardening. Her work in Oakland, California, through her business Pine House Edible Gardens is stunning.

I highlighted her previously on my Instagram page a couple of times and did it in light of the George Floyd, killing and all of the anti-racism work that we're all trying to do. Leslie has created a beautiful and amazing project called Black Sanctuary Gardens, in her hometown of Oakland, California. I want to help raise money for her efforts. Give to Black Sanctuary Gardens, I'll be matching your donations, up to $500 today. Please, go and donate to this important effort.

What Leslie is going to be doing is creating gardens for black woman in her community at low or no cost. She highlights how the garden is a place of healing and sanctuary and wants to create spaces like this for black women in her area. I love this initiative and I would love to see it echoed around our Country. I want you to go read about it and know that your donation will be matched by us at Gardenary.

Now, let's get into what you should eat all summer long.

5 Simple Ways to Save the Planet This Earth Day
44:30

It's easy on Earth Day, and everyday, to get overwhelmed by the ones who seem to do conservation and sustainability perfectly.

But the truth is, NO ONE can keep all the rules, especially when it comes to doing good for the planet. And oftentimes, those that do keep some of the rules really strictly tend to polarize the rest of us who just want to do what we can right where we are. So, for all of those who feel intimidated or isolated by those who seem to do environmentalism 'perfectly,' this episode is for YOU (and me!). The truth is that collectively, our small decisions add up quickly. And if each of us would just commit to doing a few simple things, together we can make a HUGE difference. Sound good? Let's go change the world for the better with these simple five steps.

Fill Up On The Good Stuff!
46:17

Our current food culture is obsessed with the word ‘no.’ Have you no-ticed? I have to be honest - I'm pretty tired of the word 'no' when it comes to food...and also when it comes to parenting. Anyone else with me? Here's the thing: I spent about a decade experimenting with all of the diets and jumped at every opportunity to embrace a new food restriction. What finally healed that part of me was something that you might be surprised about! Tune in to find out what it is.

In Episode 5 I talk about:

+ My food philosophy: "Fill Up On The Good Stuff"

+ How a lesson that I learned as a mother shifted the way I think about food restriction

+ The decade long trajectory of healing my relationship with food

+ My challenge to you: Saying a lot less 'no' and a lot more 'go.'

Speaking of filling up on the good stuff, if you love this podcast, I’d be so filled with good feelings if you’d subscribe and leave a review. And please share, share, share it with your friends! Just like a big harvest from the garden, good stuff is great when we share it with the people we love. So, it would mean so much to me. Click here to leave your review. Thank YOU for your support.

Eat THIS All Winter Long!
37:13

Welcome back to Grow Your Self! Last week I talked about the three things that you can do this year that will change everything. One of those things was to eat seasonally. At the end of that episode, I challenged you all to really try to implement these three things but I also promised that I would give you the tips and resources along the way to make that happen. So here we are. In episode three we are talking about what we can eat during the winter. I’m diving into the three categories of foods we can eat, what foods are in each category, and how to enjoy these foods all winter long! Let’s kick off the year by eating the foods that are meant to be eaten in the season we are in. Are you ready?!

Three Things That Can Change Everything
38:49

Welcome to the first episode of Grow Your Self! I am so happy you're here. This podcast is going to be a place that you can go to hear surprising stories about the food we eat and inspiring conversations about what it takes to really live the whole and happy life we’re all craving. Together we are going to dive into all things kitchen gardens, eating seasonally, eating locally and how all of those things can make an impact on your health, your community AND our planet. This podcast is going to inspire you to make garden magic in your very own space.

Since we are in the first few weeks of the new year (or shall I say a new decade?) I thought it would be great to kick this new podcast off with the three things that I think will change everything. Yes, I did say that these three things will change everything and I know that that is a huge promise. But I’m telling you, it works. These three things can change your health, the way you eat, and the way you care for your body. Not only that, but they can also change the planet for good! These three things will be the theme of the podcast throughout the entire year and I challenge you to really dive into each thing with me throughout all of 2020. Are you ready? Let's dig in!
