Sesame: How to Introduce Your Baby to this Potentially Allergenic Food
09:23

#43: Sesame allergy is on the rise. And although sesame is not one of the Big 8 allergenic foods (...the 8 foods that account for about 90% of food allergy) - it is number 9. And because sesame allergy is on the rise, it’s a food that we want to introduce to baby early and often, but we need to do so safely.

In this episode I’m sharing 2 really easy ways you can introduce your baby to sesame, a potentially allergenic foods. We can’t feed baby seeds or hard crunchy sesame snacks, but tahini and black sesame seed powder are 2 products that can be slightly modified and made into a safe form for your baby to self-feed.

Daycare: How To Be An Advocate for Baby-Led Weaning with Poppy Duhnke
18:57

#42: Can you do baby-led weaning successfully if your baby goes to daycare? You betcha! And this episode has some REALLY tangible and specific recommendations if you are trying to incorporate childcare + baby-led weaning.

In this podcast interview all about BLW + daycare I’m talking with Poppy Duhnke, she’s an in-home daycare owner (and pro-BLW one at that!) ...but also the mom of 10-month old twins, and she’s doing BLW at home too, so she knows exactly what you’re going through.

Poppy is sharing some EXCELLENT tips for how to talk to your day-care about BLW, what they need and what you need to excel with BLW plus some ideas on how to broach the topic if your daycare is less-than-enthusiastic about the idea of your self-feeding baby.

Shellfish: How to Introduce Your Baby to this Potentially Allergenic Food
09:33

#41: Shellfish is one of the Big 8 allergenic foods (...the 8 foods that account for about 90% of food allergy) and even though it is one of the more common pediatric food allergies, it’s the one that I find parents are the most hesitant about introducing to their babies. That may be because we are less inclined to be making shrimp and crab and scallops at home than some of the allergenic foods, but it’s still a category of food we should introduce to baby early and often to help prevent shellfish allergy down the road.

In this episode we’re looking at a few easy ways to introduce babies to shellfish. You can do pieces of shrimp or some of the more rubbery mollusks, but I prefer to wait until baby has at least 1 tooth and has tried some trickier textured foods out before diving right into the rubbery pieces of shellfish. Making shrimp into shrimp cakes or patties is a really easy way to offer shellfish in a baby-led weaning form that is easy and safe for babies to self-feed.

6 Reasons to Skip the Sippy Cup with Dawn Winkelmann
31:11

#40: Did you know it’s TOTALLY fine to skip the sippy cup phase? As a new mom, this was news to me. I just assumed baby went from breast or bottle to a sippy cup and then eventually to an open cup.

But my guest Dawn Winkelmann, MS, CCC-SLP set me straight! She’s a speech language pathologist specializing in infant feeding and pediatric swallowing and she designed my FAVORITE baby-led weaning cup, the Tiny Cup for ezpz.

Dawn’s sharing 6 reasons why you want to skip the sippy cup and I think they’re going to blow your mind. From not being necessary to actually downright dangerous and potentially interfering with baby’s ability to hit feeding and speech milestones, you’re going to be looking at the sippy cup in a whole new skeptical way my friends!

Tree Nuts: How to Introduce Your Baby to this Potentially Allergenic Food
15:27

#39: Can you safely feed tree nuts to your baby if intact nuts and thick globs of nut butter are a choking hazard? Yes, indeed! And tree nuts are one of the Big 8 allergenic foods and a category of foods that we want to expose baby to early and often...but we need to do so safely.

In this episode we are looking at some safe ways to offer baby tree nuts in food form, but without increasing the risk of choking. Tree nuts can be tricky, but by selecting easy-to-feed forms like almond flour baked into unsweetened baked goods or thinned out almond butter that the baby can self-feed, you can introduce our baby to tree nut protein.

Healthy Baby Food in Nigeria with Latifat Okara
32:12

#38: In Nigeria, babies are traditionally weaned using a food called pap. It’s a cornmeal mixed with water type of cereal that will certainly fill a baby up, but a dish that lacks important nutrients that babies need for adequate growth and development.

Latifat Okara is working to change this. Through her company Nomnom Babies, Latifat is helping to educate primary care providers and parents about the wider array of wholesome foods that babies CAN and SHOULD be eating when starting solid foods.

In this interview Latifat shared some INCREDIBLE stories about how her own daughter was failing to meet her growth milestones because of limited variety and reliance on high carbohydrate staple foods that were failing to provide her with adequate nutrition..and how that experience led her to start incorporating other traditional foods into the weaning process like crayfish and brown beans and egg yolk and plantain…

And I think you are really going to enjoy Latifat’s message - which is essentially that babies CAN eat so many more foods than we often give them credit for. In Nigeria 1 in 5 children is malnourished, and as Latifat will share in this episode - through the processes of unlearning and relearning she is working to redirect how drivers like racial discrimination, cultural beliefs, poverty and maternal education determine food choices and preferences for families in underserved parts of Nigeria.

Soy: How to Introduce Your Baby to this Potentially Allergenic Food
14:41

#37: Soy is one of the Big 8 allergenic foods. But compared to the other 7 on the list, soy is the least likely to cause an allergic reaction in your baby. It doesn’t mean we can’t introduce soy, and there’s no evidence that waiting to introduce soy will prevent allergy. As such: put soy on the list of allergenic foods to expose your baby to early and often!

In this episode we’re taking a look at soy and how to introduce your baby to this potentially allergenic food. You’ll learn the easiest way to introduce your baby to soy and why it’s not true that soy foods are harmful for babies and children. In fact, soy foods are an important piece of the plant protein and iron foods puzzle that babies CAN safely eat.

Snacks: Why Early Eaters Don’t Need Snacks
11:12

#35: Babies don’t need snacks. This is a hard pill to swallow for some parents, but especially your early eaters - they just don’t need snacks. In this episode I’m sharing why your baby doesn’t need snacks and how you help them meet their nutrient needs from the meals they are learning to eat and the breastmilk and/or formula they are continuing to drink.

If you have older kids, then you’re well aware how snacks can sabotage even the most well-laid meal plan. Same goes for babies. I share some instances when snacks may be needed...but if you’re setting the stage for introducing your baby to new foods at mealtimes, make in between meal snacks the exception, not the rule!

Dairy Ladder for Milk Reintroduction with Meg Mason
31:08

#34: If you had to cut dairy and/or soy foods out of your diet when breastfeeding for your baby, did you know you may very well be able to slowly add them back? For intolerances or non-severe allergies, a milk ladder may be appropriate for the reintroduction of dairy foods for babies and their breastfeeding mothers.

In this episode Katie talks to Meg Mason, mom of Camila who has numerous food allergies and a cow’s milk protein intolerance. Meg recently completed a milk ladder to reintroduce her daughter to milk protein as part of baby-led weaning. She shares the ups and downs of this approach plus new milk ladder appropriate recipes she created without added sugar that are appropriate for baby-led weaning.

Please note the information in this podcast episode is not intended to replace that of your primary care practitioner. The milk ladder should only be followed by infants and children who have a mild to moderate cow’s milk allergy known as non-IgE mediated milk allergy (or a cow’s milk protein intolerance). It is not appropriate for infants or children with a milk allergy that results in severe or immediate type allergic responses known as IgE mediated milk allergies.

Post-Partum Depression: How a BLW Plan Helped This Mom
29:34

#32: Postpartum depression affects many women, and estimates range from 1 in 10 to 1 in 5 women experience symptoms of postpartum depression. In this episode, first time mom Carissa Rose shares her story about postpartum depression following the birth of her son Ollie.

Carissa talks about how she struggled to conceive and suffered through a number of miscarriages before conceiving Ollie. Whereas she thought it would be smooth sailing once her son arrived, she recognized signs of serious depression 2 weeks after his birth.

In this episode Carissa opens up about her support system as well as how she dealt with and is dealing with postpartum depression. She shares with us how having a feeding plan for baby-led weaning helped her feel successful in an aspect of motherhood that she was previously apprehensive about: starting solid foods.

Water: When to Offer Your Baby Water and How Much
07:40

#24: How much water should my baby drink? Do babies even need water? And if they do need water, when and how is the best way to give babies water?

In this episode we’re diving deep into your baby’s fluid needs. Breastmilk and/or formula meets the majority of baby’s water needs, plus the foods your baby is learning to eat contribute fluid too.

Adding extra water to your baby’s diet can be a problem. In this episode I map out the two primary problems with adding additional water too early…but also show you when you do add water, an easy way to make sure you’re offering your baby enough but not too much water.

Will Offering Fruit Before Vegetables Make Your Baby Crave Sweet Foods?
21:51

#23: Ever wonder if feeding your baby fruit is going to give your baby a sweet tooth? Does offering fruit before vegetables cause babies to crave sweet foods?

Fruit is an important food group for your baby to tackle...but too much of a good thing is not a good thing! In this episode we explore why fruit is your friend (...albeit in moderation), why your baby does not need juice and tips on how to serve baby-led weaning fruits safely to your baby.

I also share why the “banana lipstick” (...offering your baby half of a banana with skin still on the lower quarter of it) is NOT my favorite baby-led weaning trend with tips on a safer (cleaner) way to offer your baby this easy to feed fruit.

Vomit: What if My Baby Vomits when Eating?
10:26

#20: What if my baby vomits when doing baby-led weaning? Is vomiting normal when you start solid foods? It can be scary when your baby vomits, but it is not always a sign of a huge problem. In this episode I cover what you can expect as far as vomiting when your baby starts eating.

As your baby is learning to eat, gagging is more frequent and sometimes more involved. Some babies will vomit from gagging, and a little bit of vomit is to be expected. I also cover when you should be concerned about vomiting if it is too frequent or vomit is happening every time you feed your baby.

An entire episode devoted to vomiting sounds gross...and it is :) ...but more often than not a little vomit does not bother your baby. In this episode I also cover how to schedule milk and solid food feeds and how far apart they should be to help minimize risk of vomit when your baby is trying new foods.

You probably know meat contains iron and other important nutrients, but how to make meat SAFE for babies to eat is a struggle for many of us! I introduce you to a number of meats your baby can eat with baby-led weaning as well as tips on how to cook and prepare and serve that meat safely so it is not a choking hazard.

You will learn how to use ground meat as a “gateway meat” if making meat freaks you out...and then once your baby is comfortable with some starter meat ideas, I help you strategize to advance to different meats and new textures with your baby. Plant protein and plant based iron will be covered in other episodes, but this is an episode for the meat-eating families!

Feeding Schedules: How Often Should I Feed My Baby?
20:14

#17: How often should I feed my baby? How much should my baby eat? How do I schedule bottles or breastfeeding when my baby starts solid food? There are a LOT of questions about schedules when it comes to starting solid foods, and I’m answering ALL of them in this episode!

I live and die by a schedule, but transitioning to solid foods will be a temporary disruption to your existing schedule. Don’t worry: in this episode I show you how often a baby should eat solid foods at different ages and stages. I explain how to increase solid food feedings as your baby starts to eat more and then how to start dropping a milk feed (breastmilk or formula) when the time is right.

If you are worried your baby is not eating enough, I cover the amount of food you can expect your baby to eat. I also explain why I don’t provide recommended portion sizes of different foods and food groups for babies doing baby-led weaning.

10 Easy Starter Foods for Baby-Led Weaning
24:22

#16: What are the best starter foods for baby-led weaning? Babies can eat some - but not all - foods early on. In this episode I walk you through 10 simple starter foods for baby-led weaning.

These are foods your baby can safely self-feed and they include a variety of textures, tastes, food groups and even meat and 2 allergenic foods. This is not an exhaustive list, but you can do these 10 foods during the first 2 weeks of baby led weaning.

Research shows that babies who are exposed to the greatest variety of foods, flavors, tastes and textures - early and often - those are the babies who are MORE likely to become independent eaters and LESS likely to be picky eaters. You can download a list of the 10 foods from this episode with additional notes on how to safely feed these foods to your baby from the show notes for this episode.

Peanut: How to Introduce Your Baby to this Potentially Allergenic Food
20:18

#14: Feeding peanut protein to your baby early and often can help prevent peanut allergy. But it can be hard to figure out a safe way to feed peanuts to your baby. Intact peanuts and globs of peanut butter are choking hazards for babies.

In this episode I cover why we now introduce peanuts early and often and how much guidance and recommendations about peanuts for babies has changed in the last decade. I walk you through how peanut protein introduction differs for high risk babies vs. babies at lower risk for developing peanut allergies.

You will learn 3 simple strategies for safely introducing peanuts to your baby so you can feed your baby peanut early and often (but do so safely!) to help prevent peanut allergy.

Milk Protein: How to Introduce Your Baby to this Potentially Allergenic Food
19:18

#13: Milk, egg and peanut are the most common allergies among children. Introducing potentially allergenic foods early and often to babies helps prevent food allergy down the road. If you’re nervous about introducing allergenic foods, start with milk: it’s the easiest to do by far.

In this episode I cover 2 types of cow’s milk protein allergy and how they differ from cow’s milk protein intolerance. If you had to remove dairy from your diet when breastfeeding, in most cases your baby will be able to tolerate dairy and milk foods...and you can bring the dairy foods back to your diet too when your baby starts solids if you’re still breastfeeding.

We don’t replace breastmilk and/or formula with fluid cow’s milk until after age 1. But your baby can safely eat milk foods, milk as an ingredient and yogurt and certain cheese starting at 6 months. In this episode I explain the easiest and safest way to introduce cow’s milk protein to your baby with baby-led weaning starting at 6 months.

Why You Don’t Need to Wait 3-5 Days Between Trying New Foods
14:33

#12: Your baby can safely try 1 new food per day. You may have heard the advice to wait 3-5 days between trying new foods, but that is a recommendation for potentially allergenic foods. Yes, we do build in observation time after trying a new allergenic food a few times; but you do not have to wait 3-5 days between introducing all of the other low risk foods that are unlikely to cause a reaction.

In this episode I’ll explain how you can safely introduce 5 new foods per week using my 5-step feeding framework. Four of the 5 foods are low-risk foods and you can do 1 new food per day. On the fifth day you offer a potentially allergenic food and do that food a few times over the next few days, observing for any reaction.

Research shows us that babies who are exposed to the greatest variety of foods, flavors, tastes and textures early and often are MORE likely to become independent eaters and are LESS likely to be picky eaters. You can fast-track your baby to success with baby-led weaning using this 5-step feeding framework.

How to Introduce Allergenic Foods to Your Baby
24:47

#11: How do you introduce allergenic foods to your baby? And what if your baby has a reaction to food? Giving potentially allergenic foods to babies may sound scary, but it’s actually easy to do and may help prevent food allergy down the road.

In this episode we will look at current research and guidance for the early introduction of potentially allergenic foods and why serving baby cow’s milk, peanut and egg make the most sense to start with. I also explain what to look out for if your baby is having an allergic reaction and what to do if your baby has a reaction to food.

I’ll introduce you to the Big 8 allergenic foods (...the 8 foods that account for 90% of food allergy) and I explain a recommended sequence for introducing new foods to your baby that will allow you to introduce all 8 of these foods SAFELY within the first 2 months of starting solid foods with baby led weaning.

5 Feeding Mistakes Most Parents Make...and How You Can Avoid Them
18:29

#10: We all make mistakes when we are learning something new! In this episode I’m covering 5 feeding mistakes most parents make and how you can avoid them. I’ve made many of these baby feeding mistakes myself; but, luckily there are a few simple strategies you can put into practice when feeding your baby to make sure you are getting a safe start to solid foods with baby-led weaning.

In this episode I cover how to identify and respond to your baby’s hunger and fullness cues so you can know if your baby wants more food or is done with the meal. We will look at how much food should a baby eat and what proper portion sizes look like. Also covering types of foods should we be serving to the baby and how to avoid negative sensory experiences during feeding.

And if you have an older baby who is starting to play with his food or drop it on the floor or throw food, I’ll share an easy strategy for getting your baby to be more interested and engaged at mealtimes, and actually eat all of that delicious food you are taking the time to prepare!

Can I Start Solid Foods Before My Baby is 6 Months?
20:41

#9: What if my baby is showing the signs of readiness to feed by is not 6 months old yet? Can I start solid foods before my baby is 6 months old? In this episode I explain why starting solid foods prior to 6 months is not only unnecessary from a nutrition standpoint, but can also be dangerous.

Breastmilk and/or formula will meet your baby’s needs up until about 6 months of age. When your baby is then showing the other signs of readiness to feed, it’s time to start offering complementary or weaning foods.

In this episode I explain why the 6-month mark really matters when it comes to nutrition and safety. If you are getting pressure to start solid foods early, I explain why big babies don’t need to start food early, why small babies don’t need to start food early and how starting solid foods early will not help your baby sleep through the night!

There are a few rare instances when it is advised for babies to start solid foods prior to 6 months of age and that is for medical reasons. This episode covers iron and how iron needs change as your baby approaches the time to start solid foods.

Why Your Baby’s High Chair Needs a Footrest
16:56

#7: This is a hard one for parents to hear: but your baby’s feet should be resting flat on a footrest in the high chair. A footrest helps stabilize your baby’s core, which in turn facilitates a safe swallow.

Dangling feet are a no-go zone; but all is not lost if your high chair does not have a footrest! What do you do if your high chair does not have a footrest? I’ll show you some DIY high chair hacks to help improve your high chair’s safety if it does not have an adjustable footrest and give my recommendations for the best high chairs for baby-led weaning.

What Shape & Size Should My Baby’s Food Be at First?
16:29

#6: What size should I cut my baby’s food? What shape foods should I offer for baby-led weaning? It can be confusing, but smaller foods are not ideal when your baby is just learning to eat. Your baby can’t pick up and self-feed very small pieces early on, and cutting foods so small can increase choking risk early on in feeding.

I share some simple starter foods that are safe for babies to eat, along with information about other foods not to feed early on. How to Do “Purees for a Few Days” When Starting Solid Foods
19:47

#5: Can you combine purees with baby-led weaning? Yes, indeed - but the important thing is to let your baby self-feed even from her first bites. If jumping right in to offering solid foods to your baby sounds scary, you are going to like my “Purees for a Few Days” approach to baby-led weaning.

In this episode I will teach you how to transition your baby from a liquid only diet to one that includes a variety of pureed foods as well as other soft, solid textured food. I’ll explain how you can honor the principles and self-feeding philosophy of baby-led weaning by offering your baby a pre-loaded spoon and teaching your baby how to self-feed by spoon.

Purees are an important texture for your baby to master...they’re just not the ONLY texture babies can eat. Listen to learn how to try new textures quickly and safely during the first few days of baby-led weaning. And if you’re trying to help an older baby switch from purees, the tips in this episode will help you too. It is not too late to start baby-led weaning!

Gagging vs. Choking: What is the Difference?
25:18

#4: What is the difference between gagging and choking? Many parents are fearful to start solid foods because they are fearful of their baby gagging on food. But gagging is actually a good thing: it’s a natural and necessary part of the learning how-to-eat process.

In this episode you’ll learn why babies gag when they eat and what to do (...and more importantly, what NOT to do) when your baby gags. I also explain how gagging and choking are different, what causes babies to choke and what we can do to lower choking risk and prevent choking when feeding the baby.

If you are scared of gagging and not sure you can let your baby start solid-foods because of gagging, I share a simple 5-word mantra you can repeat to yourself that will help you stay calm as you allow your baby to recover from a gag without intervening.

If you’re ready to raise an independent eater and prevent picky eating (...and get over your fear of gagging!) then let’s get started learning about baby-led weaning together! Subscribe, rate and review the podcast here.

5 Things Parents & Caregivers Should Do Before Starting Baby-Led Weaning
26:35

#3: If you are getting ready for your baby to start solid foods but your baby just isn’t quite there yet, there are a few things parents and caregivers can do before starting baby-led weaning.

In this episode I’ll walk you through a list of things you can do to get prepared for when your baby is finally ready to take his or her first bites! You don’t need to buy a bunch of baby gear or feeding contraptions to do baby-led weaning well. But we’ll talk about how to choose a high chair and why a chair with an adjustable footrest is safest. And I share my favorite feeding gear that helps promote independent eating and keeps your baby safe during mealtime.

If it’s been awhile since you took CPR, an infant refresher CPR course will give you the skills you need in the event your baby does choke. And we’ll talk about what signs to look for that the baby is having an allergic reaction and what to do if your baby has an allergic reaction to food.

5 Things Your Baby Should Be Able to Do Before Starting Baby-Led Weaning
20:01

#2: Are you anxious to start solid foods, but you’re not sure if your baby is ready yet? In this episode I am going to walk you through the signs of readiness to feed. I’ll tell you when to start solid foods so you’ll know if your baby is ready to begin baby-led weaning.

We’ll cover everything your baby needs to be able to do in order to be safe to start solid foods with baby-led weaning. If you have a premature baby who was born early, I’ll show you how to calculate when to start solid foods based on the baby’s adjusted age.

If you’re getting advice or pressure to start solid foods early, I talk about why it is not safe to feed babies before they are ready to start solids (...plus why it is not necessary from a nutrition standpoint). If you’re baby can do all 5 of the things I cover in this episode, then your baby is ready to start eating food and can do so safely with baby-led weaning.
