Unfortunately, the hosts are utterly uniformed, divisive and lack grace (as advertised) toward those they disagree with. Even if you share their particular views, I'm sure you'll find their distaste for those who don't breathtaking.

Fantastic politics show. Left leaning but the hosts try very hard to understand all perspectives. I love that they talk about issues I never hear brought up anywhere else.

Description

Editors’ Notes: “I think there's a lot of valid, complicated, hard differences in America right now,” says Sarah Stewart Holland, co-host of Pantsuit Politics, a biweekly podcast in which she and longtime friend Beth Silvers tackle the ideological polarization in US politics head-on with nuanced, intelligent discussions. “I think what we try to do is say, 'We see it. We see how hard it is.' Sometimes, it's not a political question or a political solution as far as who you vote for or what party you are in and then the conversation's over, because there's really hard, complicated discussions to be had beyond just your political party.”

Since the show started in 2015, the Kentucky-based Holland and Silvers sought to subvert the traditional left-right punditry of cable news to have what they describe as “grace-filled conversations” which are more community-driven and derive from their own shared values and friendship. Both women grew up in Kentucky, studied law, and are raising families. It’s in those shared experiences that they’re able to stay truthful with each other, but also with their listeners—many of whom appreciate their views regardless of the differences they might have. “We hear a lot of ‘You're like our political therapists, you're our internet moms,’” Silvers says. “That feels right to me, because I think there are a lot of people who listen to our show who rarely agree with my political perspective, but they just like something about being able to sit and hear the news with us and know that we care about their feelings even if they are different than ours. That feels like the most important thing we can do right now.”

The Personal Is Political

Several of our listeners have asked us to discuss our views on American obstetrics and birth. We also discuss the Obama administration's guidance to schools on restroom access. Finally, in the Heels, we go full MOM and discuss minivans vs. SUVs.

Five Things You Need to Know About Medicare for All
00:22:16

What You Need to Know About Medicare for All:

  1. Medicare: minus the "All" (02:19)
  2. Medicare is popular because it touches so many Americans. (09:09) Currently, 44 million beneficiaries—some 15 percent of the U.S. population—are enrolled in the Medicare program. Enrollment is expected to rise to 79 million by 2030. Only one in 10 beneficiaries relies solely on the Medicare program for health care coverage.
  3. Medicare for All is not really Medicare and it's not one thing. (14:10)
  4. The cost of these plans is very, very high. (17:24)
  5. The Taiwanese health care system is the closest equivalent which is why you hear so much about it. (21:38)

Episode of the Year: What You Need to Know about Abortion Law
01:20:57

After polling our listeners, you have selected our 2019 Episode of the Year! Today, we're replaying our policy set from May about abortion law. You'll hear our Five Things You Need to Know About Abortion Law followed by our conversation about the complexities and nuances surrounding this issue.

Thanks to everyone who voted; we know abortion is a tough topic, so it speaks well of our community that you all were and continue to be so ready to engage with it.

Five Things to Know About Abortion Law:

  1. Abortion has a long emotional history in the US that Roe vs. Wade didn't stop.
  2. Ohio, Mississippi, Kentucky, and Georgia have passed "heart beat bills".
  3. Heartbeat bills and outright bans on abortion in all circumstances are surging in popularity, despite the fact that public opinion is largely more nuanced about abortion.
  4. Stare decisions recently took a hit on the Supreme Court.
  5. Kentucky's law has already been struck down in court. Mississippi and Ohio's are already being challenged. Georgia and Alabama laws are also expected to be challenged.

Five Things You Need to Know About Labor Unions
00:23:37

Five Things You Need to Know About Labor Unions:

1. The American labor movement sprang to life with industrialization and resulted in many of the workplace protections we enjoy today. (02:02)

2. Union membership peaked in the mid-20th century but struggled with racist and sexist policies as well as corruption within the leadership and anti-union government policies. (11:10)

3. As private union membership began to decrease, public service unions began to grow. (17:57)

4. We are also seeing the rise of organized action beyond the public sector as well. (20:04)

5. There is also a rise of collective action inside tech about both worker issues and societal issues. (21:46)

5 Things You Need to Know About Criminal Justice Reform
00:30:18

March is National Criminal Justice Month. Plus, criminal justice reform is one of the few pieces of major legislation that has been passed with bipartisan consensus under the Trump administration. We'll be talking more about this issue on Tuesday's episode. Today, though, we're getting you ready for that conversation by sharing five things you need to know about criminal justice reform.

  1. The cost of the criminal justice system can begin before a person is every convicted of a crime.
  1. Once you're in the court system, the process is difficult and representation is hard to come by.
  1. If you plea or are convicted, sentencing is another layer of inequity.
  1. A prison sentence is often just the beginning of the punishment which can continue far beyond the prison walls.
  1. Let's talk about the death penalty.

Brexit, the Veto, Guns, and White Nationalism
00:49:58

On today's show, we discuss a variety of important news stories from around the globe. We discuss flooding in Nebraska, continued Brexit drama, Governor Newsom's death penalty decision, President Trump's first veto, and, in our main segment, the tragic shooting in Christchurch, New Zealand. The shooting raises discussion about gun control, terrorism, and white nationalism. Outside of politics, Beth finally saw Hamilton and Sarah is ready for spring cleaning.

Beto, Manafort, the College Admissions Scandal, and Understanding Antisemitism (with Deborah Lipstadt)
01:02:52

In today's episode, we're joined by Professor Deborah Lipstadt, an expert in Holocaust studies. Professor Lipstadt helps us understand the controversies surrounding the Women's March and Representative Omar, and she advises us on how to thoughtfully discuss and critique America's relationship with Israel.

But first, we dive into the week's news. Paul Manafort received 43 additional months in prison from Judge Amy Berman Jackson, and he's been indicted by Manhattan's District Attorney on state charges.

After great anticipation, Beto O'Rourke has announced his candidacy for the Democratic Party's nomination. We're a little confused by his splashy Vanity Fair rollout and campaign announcement video.

We also talk about Operation Varsity Blues and the state of college admissions, wealth, and parenting in America. Sarah recommended these three episodes of Revisionist History: Carlos Doesn't Remember, Food Fight, and My Little Hundred Million.

Thanks again to Professor Lipstadt for joining us in conversation. She is the Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish History and Holocaust Studies at Emory University. Her books include The Eichmann Trial, Denial; Holocaust History on Trial (a National Jewish Book Award-winner); Denying the Holocaust: the Growing Assault on Truth and Memory; and Beyond Belief: the American Press and the Coming of the Holocaust. She lives in Atlanta. Her latest book is Antisemitism: Here and Now. Rachel Weisz portrayed Professor Lipstadt in the 2016 film Denial

2020 Dreams, Paul Manafort, and Elizabeth Warren Takes On Tech Giants
00:49:24

We recorded a live episode in Sarah's hometown, Paducah, Kentucky. Our comments about President Trump signing Bibles led us to a bigger conversation about what kind of presidential candidate we need in 2020. Then, we discuss Paul Manafort's prison sentence. In the main segment, we discuss Elizabeth Warren's desire to break up the tech giants and why we expect her ideas to gain traction. Outside of politics, we discuss Top Chef and Captain Marvel.
