EP-158 | Warfighter Fitness & Endurance - Creating the Ultimate Warrior
01:03:45
The military strives to create the elite warrior. Excellent physical fitness, stamina, and endurance are at the foundation of building the ultimate fighting machine. In this episode we talk about some of what former U.S. Army Captain and Fitness Instructor Stephanie Lincoln has learned in how to create good health and fitness. Stephanie Walker is the founder and CEO of Fire Team Whiskey. She has been featured in NBC News, myfitnesspal, SparkPeople, BestLife, and Women Fitness Magazine. She was inspired by her work with the Florida Army National Guard Wellness Program and also her many years working with Military Medical. She observed the steady decline of the fitness and health of Military Service Members over the last 10 years. Stephanie created and published a unique eating plan, a specialized line of nutritional shakes, bars, and other performance supplements and a fitness program that requires no equipment and minimal time. Fire Team Whiskey® encompasses all of those intangible things that a Military Member and First Responder is driven by: Duty, Comradery, and Mission. http://www.fireteamwhiskey.com Robert is a retired US Army Armor and Recruiter/Retention MSG turned Fortune 50 executive. 00:53:09
We are all guilty of procrastination at some point. Parkinson's law is the adage that "work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion". If you are given 8 hours to accomplish something, you'll take all 8, even though the task may only take 2 hours. This is another form of procrastination. Robert, Alejandra "AJ", and Scott discuss Parkinson's Law and how leaders can deal with it. In another topic, the team begins to focus on basic management and leadership skills on how to inspire others and rally people to your vision. Robert is a retired US Army Armor and Recruiter/Retention MSG turned Fortune 50 executive; Alejandra "AJ" is an active duty USAF Security Forces NCO; Scott Johnson is a former British Army Engineer and EOD NCO Go to www.patreon.com/mentors4mil and pick a tier to join the team. EP-133 | You Gotta Know Yourself | From the Weapons Range To The Boardroom
00:54:30
Excellence and success are dependent upon the individuals willingness to put in the hard work to achieve it. A person has to know their strengths and their weaknesses before they can move forward. Even when on the firing range, every person has different ability levels and it's important that the right level of guidance is given before a person can make an improvement. Drew Estell is the owner of BaerSolutionsllc.com, and is a former Green Beret and current weapons instructor. As Drew has often said: "the more experienced shooter they are, the less feedback they should be given. Too much info, and it will hurt their progress instead of help. Less experienced shooters can have a little more feedback because they are essentially a blank canvas without as many bad habits learned. [Training each is] a balancing act and their success is going to be based off of how well you read their performance and interpret their frustrations." In this episode, Drew joins Robert, Otis McGregor, and Scott Johnson to talk about achieving excellence on a weapons range and achieving excellence in the board room - there are several similarities with both. Robert is a retired US Army Armor and Recruiter/Retention MSG turned Fortune 50 executive; Drew Estell is a former US Army Special Forces NCO; Otis McGregor is a former US Army Special Forces Officer; Scott Johnson is a former British Army Engineer/Sapper and EOD Technician. EP-90 | Margaret Smith | Army Officer | Running For Her Life
00:46:12
Imagine finding that you are genetically predisposed for the genetic mutation BRCA2. According to the National Cancer Institute, BRCA2 (Breast Cancer 2, Early Onset) is "a gene on chromosome 13 that normally helps to suppress cell growth. These proteins help repair damaged DNA and, therefore, play a role in ensuring the stability of the cell's genetic material. When either of these genes is mutated, or altered, such that its protein product either is not made or does not function correctly, DNA damage may not be repaired properly. As a result, cells are more likely to develop additional genetic alterations that can lead to cancer." When Maggie discovered she carried the BRCA2 gene, she took immediate action and began the run for her life. Hear how she reacted when faced with this life-threatening medical issue and how her husband helped her recover and find her new passion. She was quoted in the Army Times as saying "I want women to get tested…I want them to know there are others out there experiencing the same thing, others who have been through it," Smith said. "Men are carriers too -- get tested." EP-86 | Brad Genereux | US Navy SEABEE | Camino De Santiago | PTSD
00:31:24
Brad Genereux spent 22 years serving in the USN as a SEABEE. As a career military man, Brad Genereux deployed eleven times around the globe. Deployment demons pursued him until Brad confronted the inner darkness stalking his days and nights while walking the Camino de Santiago, a 500-mile pilgrimage in northern Spain. During his own pilgrimage on the “Camino de Santiago” in Spain, he found self-discovery, healing, and redemption as he trekked the 500 miles to the end of the earth. Recently he said “conflict is as old as mankind, but technology has taken away the lag time in returning from combat to “normal life.” The Camino de Santiago provides a means of processing what took place on the battlefield without going from Afghanistan to Walmart in 24 hours.” His passion is now focused on helping other veterans struggling with isolation, hypervigilance, nightmares, or insomnia by joining him Every Spring and Fall when Brad leads other veterans on the Spanish path to peace. This pilgrimage is called "Veterans on the Camino". Visit https://veteransonthecamino.com/ to learn more about Veterans on the Camino. EP-85 | Tom Moore | Australian Army | With You With Me
00:52:33
This episode is socked full of great tips for anyone making a career change as well as active duty military considering transition within the next few years. Tom Moore is the cofounder and Managing Director of WithYouWithMe based out of Australia. WithYouWithMe is a veteran owned tech start up that solves the problem of effectively transitioning personnel from the ADF to the Australian private sector. This organization will soon be available to U.S. Military transitioning from service. Like America, Australian society has long struggled to manage the transition of veterans into the workplace because they generally don’t understand the military lifestyle, career, experiences and skills, and thus cannot assign positive value to them. WithYouWithMe is partnering with Australian businesses (and soon U.S. businesses) to fill this knowledge gap and educate the working force on the true value of veterans in the work place. Joining Robert on this episode is former Australian SF soldier, Bram Connolly. EP-73 Derick Carver | US Army CPT | IED Amputee | Adaptive Athlete
00:43:20
U.S. Army Captain Derick Carver was on a patrol in the Afghan desert when he hit an IED. The blast destroyed his left leg almost to the pelvis, and about 50 percent of his right thigh. He hasn't let his disabilities slow him down. He has competed at the highest levels as a crossfit athlete. This is a revised version of a podcast from about a year ago. In today’s fast-paced and highly competitive marketplace, it is crucial for organizations to be flexible enough to change. EP-70 Stu Pearson | British Paratrooper | Kilo Two Bravo | Extraordinary Journey
00:36:38
Stuart Pearson went on a routine patrol to observe and possibly attack a Taliban checkpoint near Kajaki Dam in Helmand province. As his patrol carefully picked their way down a ravine, his friend, Cpl Stuart Hale, hopped across a river bed and then flew backwards after stepping on a mine. Another soldier, Andy Barlow, who subsequently won the George Medal for attending to the wounded, stood on a mine after reaching to grab a bottle of water that had been thrown to him. The NCO in charge, Cpl Wright, was severely wounded twice by shrapnel but he still continued looking after the men. Once rescued, Cpl Mark Wright died in the helicopter. A movie was made about the event - "Kilo Two Bravo" that is currently on Netflix. Stu Pearson joins Robert Gowin to talk about the events of that day, what he's been doing since separation from the military, and how he now works to assist others.
