Why Less is More In The Kingdom of God (with Chris Nye)
0:38:45

This week, Jerrad interviews author, pastor, and friend, Chris Nye about his new book Less of More, and what it means for us as men.

Description of Less of More:

For most Americans, the pursuit of happiness really means the pursuit of more--more money, more prestige, more stuff. We've made idols out of innovation, growth, power, and wealth. Far from offering us happiness and satisfaction, this has only left us exhausted, isolated, miserable, and wondering if there is a better way. There is. Less of More exposes our pursuit of more for what it truly is: an attempt to satisfy our souls with the temporary instead of the eternal. Pastor and writer Chris Nye invites us to consider what a full and abundant life looks like apart from money, status, and power. He exposes the lies inherent in our obsession with growth, fame, and wealth and calls us to a countercultural life marked by connection, obscurity, vulnerability, and generosity. If you have gained the world but lost your soul, Less of More offers a compelling path toward a life of true, deep, lasting satisfaction with Jesus--not us--at the center of it.

0:45:49

What would it look like to raise children who saw themselves has part of a multi-generational team, sent out by God to be used for his redemption of the world? Are these the type of children you’re currently raising? Do you have a plan to instill this type of thinking into their hearts?

The truth is, it’s not easy. It doesn’t come naturally for most of us. And, it takes a ridiculous amount of intentionality as a father.

In this episode, join Jerrad Lopes and Jefferson Bethke as they talk about what Biblical parenting looks like practically in 2019.

When God Hasn't Answered Your Prayers (and Parenting A Special Needs Child)
0:31:02

When his oldest son was diagnosed with severe autism, pastor Jason Hague found himself trapped, stuck between perpetual sadness and a lower, safer kind of hope. This is the common struggle for those of us walking through the Land of Unanswered Prayer. Life doesn’t look the way we expected, so we seek to protect ourselves from further disappointment. But God has a third path for us, beyond sadness or resignation: the way of aching joy. Christ himself is with us here, beckoning us toward the treasures hidden in the darkness.Join Host Jerrad Lopes as he interviews Jason about his newest book, Aching Joy. Aching Joy is an honest psalm of hope for those walking between pain and promise: the aching of a broken world and the beauty of a loving God. In this place, rather than trying to dodge the pain, we choose to feel it all—and to see where Jesus is in the midst of struggle. And because we make that choice, we feel all the good that comes with it, too. This is Jason’s story. This is your story. Come, find your joy within the aching.

Praying Points Your Family To A Better God
0:35:52

When we asked the wives of the Dad Tired community what they thought was one of the best ways a husband can be the spiritual leader of their home, without question, the number one answer was "To pray with us". Wives desperately want their husbands to lead them and their kids in prayer. The truth is, however, most guys don't pray with their wife and kids. Some feel awkward, some have no idea how, and some are fearful of what their wife might want to pray about; worried that it could lead to bringing up issues they've been trying to push under the rug. In this episode, join host Jerrad Lopes as he addresses the likely reason you aren't praying with your family, and more importantly, what it would look like to practically step up in this way. As a bonus, make sure to stick around to the very end of the episode where Jerrad addresses specific questions about prayer from the Dad Tired community.

The Most Important Thing You Can Be Doing
0:22:07

Growing up, many of us had a vision for where we would be in life once we reached our 20s, 30s or even our 40s. But when we reach those milestones in our lives it’s rare that we feel reality has lived up to our vision. Somehow, we thought we would feel more adult, would feel settled in our careers and would have some idea of what we wanted to be when we grew up. However, the most important thing we can be doing, the one thing that makes us a success, is raising little disciples of Christ. Join host Jerrad Lopes as he discusses the importance of being intentionally invested in our children. Learn how we can change the world simply by faithfully and passionately loving our children and our wives.

And it's definitely not just about the kids." -Andy Crouch, Tech Wise Family

Could God Be Calling Your To Foster or Adopt?
0:23:04

Scripture tells us religion that is pure is caring for the orphans (James 1:27). In the United States alone there are more than 400,000 children in the foster care system.* Each child is an opportunity to show God's love, to reach out to the most vulnerable and be an agent of hope. Join host Jerrad Lopes and other members of the Dad Tired community as they share their stories of becoming foster and adoptive parents. While not everyone is called to fostering or adopting, we are all called to love and to pray for one another. This weeks episode will give you a glimpse behind the curtain of what it means to take a child into your home. If God is calling you to take that step, you will benefit from the insights of fathers who have already gone through the process. If fostering or adopting is not right for you and your family, pray for those who are.

Marriage After God (with Aaron Smith)
0:34:26

This week, host Jerrad Lopes introduces listeners to Aaron Smith, a husband, father and founder of Husband Revolution, an online marriage ministry. Aaron's goal in ministry is to revive the hearts of husbands and fathers around the world. Listen as Aaron speaks about combating our human tendency to compare ourselves to others, parenting techniques, church community, and other thought-provoking topics. This episode will leave you inspired and encouraged in your role as a husband and father. You'll definitely want to take notes!

Host: Jerrad Lopes

Guest: Aaron Smith is a husband and father who has always had a passion for sharing the gospel with the world. After getting married in 2007 to Jennifer Smith ( Unveiled Wife ), he and his wife became missionaries in Africa. Throughout the first four and a half years of marriage he and his wife experienced many struggles but found restoration through the grace of God, and out of those trials was birthed an online marriage ministry (HusbandRevolution.com). His heart now is directed towards encouraging husbands in their walks with Christ and their marriage. His hope is to see a revival in the hearts of husbands around the world. He believes that if husbands would humble themselves and turn toward God that the message of Christ would be advanced greater than ever before.

Scripture References:

  • Ephesians 5:25-30" Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.[a] 28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body."

God as Protector & Protecting our Families (with John Lovell from Warrior Poet Society)
0:38:22

So often we as Christians want to focus on only one attribute of God, the attribute of love. But we tend to forget that scripture also tells us that God is a man of war. It's important to understand that both of these attributes are important and help to show us how we as men should be living our lives. Join host Jerrad Lopes and guest John Lovell from the Warrior Poets Society as they discuss God as a warrior, the theology of defense, practical things each of us can do to protect our homes, and how best to be a good father and husband. This episode is different than anything you've heard on Dad Tired previously and you'll want to take the time and listen.

Practicing Rest & Sabbath as a Family (with A.J. Swoboda)
0:36:08

Join host Jerrad Lopes as he discusses the topic of sabbath, with A.J. Swoboda. In this episode, the two discuss questions like:

  • Are we still required to observe the sabbath?
  • What does a typical sabbath day look like?
  • Is sabbath different than leisure?
  • What's the point of the sabbath and why is God so serious about it.

A. J. Swoboda (PhD, University of Birmingham) pastors Theophilus Church in urban Portland, Oregon. He is executive director of the Seminary Stewardship Alliance, a consortium of Christian higher education institutions dedicated to reconnecting Christians with the biblical call to care for God's creation. Swoboda also teaches biblical studies, theology, and church history at Portland Seminary and Fuller Theological Seminary, among others. He is an award-winning author or editor of nine books and speaks regularly at conferences, retreats, churches, and seminars. Visit his website and blog at www.ajswoboda.com.

In this episode, A.J. and Jerrad discuss his new book, Subversive Sabbath

"We live in a 24/7 culture of endless productivity, workaholism, distraction, burnout, and anxiety--a way of life to which we've sadly grown accustomed. This tired system of "life" ultimately destroys our souls, our bodies, our relationships, our society, and the rest of God's creation. The whole world grows exhausted because humanity has forgotten to enter into God's rest. This book pioneers a creative path to an alternative way of existing. Combining creative storytelling, pastoral sensitivity, practical insight, and relevant academic research, Subversive Sabbath offers a unique invitation to personal Sabbath-keeping that leads to fuller and more joyful lives. A. J. Swoboda demonstrates that Sabbath is both a spiritual discipline and a form of social justice, connects Sabbath-keeping to local communities, and explains how God may actually do more when we do less. He shows that the biblical practice of Sabbath-keeping is God's plan for the restoration and healing of all creation. The book includes a foreword by Matthew Sleeth." Amazon Book Description

Past guest and Pastor of Bridgetown church in Portland Oregon, John Mark Comer gave Subversive Sabbath this raving review:

"Few things are as subversive to the hurry addiction of the modern world than the practice of Sabbath. And few things are as life-or-death important. A. J. has written his best book yet. His keen mind, quick wit, and deep soulfulness come through beautifully, page by captivating page. But more than anything, this is a book that is lived. My new go-to book on the Sabbath."

Comparison: The Thief of Joy
0:20:13

Comparing our lives to others, it's something we all find ourselves doing from time-to-time. But we must realize that since the beginning of time one of the main tactics the enemy has used to steal a Christians joy has been getting them to believe that a person, position or possession can bring them more satisfaction and joy than Christ. This week, join host Jerrad Lopes as he discusses how comparing ourselves to others is a symptom of something deeper, how in this age of social media we must be even more vigilant, and recognizing the joy in knowing we are loved by God.

Practicing Faithfulness in the Mundane of Life
0:22:26

The Bible is filled with stories of great feats of faith, courage, and strength. But have you ever wondered about the rest of the story? Each of the great Bible characters lived ordinary lives and dealt with and experienced the monotonous, just like we do. But these moments in between the chapters gave each man and woman of Christ the opportunity to practice what it was to be a follower of God in the mundane. Join host Jerrad Lopes as he explores the idea that God gives these everyday opportunities in order for us to practice obedience and faithfulness in the little things. This episode is an opportunity to delve deeper into scripture and see more than just what is written on the page.

When Busy Lives Prevent Us From Hearing God
0:26:52
When something is unsettled in our heart, we do whatever we can to mask it. Work harder, drink more, yell louder, buy something new. Anything to cover up the noise of our soul. We are convinced that if we can make enough noise, the tugging of the Holy Spirit will go away. At the root of our noise-making-efforts is shame. We believe that when things get quiet, we will hear the sound of a sinful heart. And the truth is, you’re right. Your heart is sinful and wicked, deserving of punishment and shame. But there is good news; The Gospel & the fact that God has a reputation of engaging broken and messy people with grace. In this episode, join host Jerrad Lopes as he talks about entering into 2018 with a new mercy and what that practically looks like for us as husbands and dads. One word or phrase, that's all it takes to change the course of someone's life. Scripture tells us that the tongue holds the power of life and death, how are you using that power? Your words of encouragement or discouragement can spur those around you towards Christ or further away from Him and you have a responsibility to use your words to edify. Join host Jerrad Lopes as he discusses a man's need to spur his friends in their accomplishments and how that need can be used for the Kingdom of God. This week episode will challenge you to think deeply about the effect your words have on those around you and how the words of others affect you.

Work, finances, family dynamics, and life circumstances — our actions and choices contribute to the success and failures of these areas and others of life but often things happen outside of our control. Becoming The Spiritual Leader of Your Home
0:30:34

As men, we are called to be the spiritual leaders of our homes but most of us don't feel confident in that role. At times this lack of confidence creates a paradox in our lives as we desperately want to be the best husbands we can and our wives so desperately want us to lead our families towards Jesus and our uncertainty causes inaction. This week, join host Jerrad Lopes as he discussed what it means to be a spiritual leader and how that leadership must come from deep within our hearts, not simply from behavior.

Suffering & The Gospel (feat. Pastor Saeed Abedini)
1:00:19
Scripture tells us that we are heirs with Christ if we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. Join host Jerrad Lopes as he talks with Pastor Saeed about coming to Christ, his four-year imprisonment in Iran for sharing his faith and the controversies that have arisen since his release. If you followed Pastor Saeed's story in the media, this episode is your chance to hear his firsthand account and learn the story behind the headlines. Host: Jerrad Lopes Guest: Saeed Abedini, an Iranian American Christian pastor who was imprisoned in Iran for threatening “national security” for being a Christian and for sharing his faith with Muslims. Mentioned during the episode: · Matthew 6:33: "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."
