Wednesday, Alone Against the Frost, and Paperback Adventures - Ep171
01:04:45
Over on Netflix, Wednesday is straight out of the mind of Tim Burton and some of the team behind Smallville and it’s great, Gavin Inglis and Glen Rahman’s Alone Against the Frost from Chaosium is well-written, super challenging solo roleplaying for Call of Cthulhu, Resident Evil 2: The Board Game from Steamforged Games is an ace adaptation of a classic video game onto the tabletop, and Paperback Adventures from Fowers Games is moreish wordy fun. 00:00 - #LJJ and “Spa Talk” 12:12 - Alone Against the Frost 29:42 - Resident Evil 2: The Board Game 38:57 - Paperback Adventures 48:43 - Wednesday All that, and a warm water bed, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Lockwood & Co, Mada, and Shin chan: Me and the Professor on Summer Vacation - Ep170
01:03:27
Ghibli-esque slice of life Shin chan: Me and the Professor on Summer Vacation The Endless Seven-Day Journey is Millennium Kitchen’s nostalgic return to Boku no Natsuyasumi, and Mada is all about discovering the hidden game within just as much as it’s about hand management, risk taking, and prickly pears. Kids go hunting for ghosts in Joe Cornish’s very bingeable Lockwood & Co. that has sharply-written dialogue throughout its eight episodes of creepy horror, and we’re off to Airecon and have some convention advice for anyone that’ll listen. Plus, health and safety gone mad? 00:00 - Throwing axes 11:03 - Shin chan: Me and the Professor on Summer Vacation The Endless Seven-Day Journey 27:22 - Convention advice 41:35 - Mada 49:14 - Lockwood & Co. Our Flag Means Death, Sniper Elite: The Board Game, and Rebuilding Seattle - Ep169
01:01:22
Our Flag Means Death is a romantic comedy (with emphasis on the romance) of pirates and gentlemanliness, hot off our RRR kick we’ve fallen hard for Eega, and we have thoughts on modern horror Barbarian. We get investing in property with Rebuilding Seattle by WizKids, scope out just how much love has gone into Sniper Elite: The Board Game by Rebellion Unplugged - a hidden movement board game based on the video game - and Prospero Hall smashes it yet again with The Rocketeer: Fate of the Future from Funko Games. Plus a gaming weekend of fun. 00:00 - Sam and Dan's gaming weekend of fun. 14:22 - Eega and Barbarian 21:24 - Rebuilding Seattle 35:05 - Sniper Elite: The Board Game 42:00 - The Rocketeer: Fate of the Future 48:55 - Our Flag Means Death All that, and the tuna bus, with Kris (@DigitalStrider) and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Chasing Static, That Old Wallpaper, and The Decagon House Murders - Ep168
01:00:52
The best board games to play remotely, how Back 4 Blood is a modern Left 4 Dead with deck building, we head to a Welsh village Chasing Static, you’ve got to love That Old Wallpaper’s strangely compelling theme, and The Decagon House Murders uses the howdunit format to great effect. Plus, a rich vein of stuff. 00:00 - A “job lot”. 06:06 - A question from our pal Ben Tucker: what are the best board games to play remotely? 16:35 - Back 4 Blood. 27:47 - Chasing Static. 39:52 - The Decagon House Murders. 49:43 - That Old Wallpaper. Vampire Survivors, Ghosts, and Horizon Zero Dawn: The Board Game - Ep167
01:01:53
The butt-clenchingly moreish Vampire Survivors from poncle, the really lovely and dead quaint comedy Ghosts, and the lovingly adapted video game brought to life Horizon Zero Dawn: The Board Game from Steamforged Games. Plus pillows, and ripping music in 2023. 00:00 - Getting in the Groove and streaming dreams. 08:57 - Sam's V pillow. 12:12 - Vampire Survivors. 35:11 - Ghosts. 43:50 - Horizon Zero Dawn: The Board Game. 55:12 - Peter's Big D (and more pillows). Andor, Akropolis, and K3 - Ep166
54:54
Andor is Disney+’s new Star Wars series and it’s a fantastic Brechtian political spy drama that doesn’t rely on lightsabers, K3 from Helvetiq is an abstract game that’s a cross of Chess, Connect 4, and programming, and Akropolis from Gigamic is a very quick tile laying boardgame we just love. Plus New Year’s resolutions and predictions for 2023 based on movies. 00:00 - What will 2023 bring? Let’s consult the movies! 03:52 - New Year’s Resolutions. 16:36 - K3 20:46 - Akropolis (also thanks to Play The Game HQ for their brilliant guide) 29:29 - Andor 46:42 - 2022 and Soylent Green All that, and doubtful space elevators, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, Lacrimosa, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - Ep165
01:10:11
Marvel’s Star Wars homage / Kevin Bacon delivery vehicle The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special gets dissected, boardgame reviews of Luna Capital (place tiles, build an engine, reach the Moon) and Lacrimosa (Mozart’s dead, figure out his legacy), and going back to a genre-definer with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Plus we enter The Christmas Zone, and give each other our traditional Secret Santa gifts. 00:00 - The Christmas Zone. 07:01 - Secret Santa: Part 1. 13:56 - Luna Capital and Lacrimosa. 26:46 - Secret Santa: Part 2. 29:56 - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. 43:36 - Secret Santa: Part 3. 47:42 - The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. 58:47 - Secret Santa: Part 4. All that, and a bloated mass of content, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). The Bear, Immortality, and Coffee Talk - Ep164
01:02:20
00:00 - Kris's birthday, celebrated not with a song, but a goldfish. 10:09 - Just to be clear, The Bear is not for kids; it’s an intense black comedy drama, shot on a small budget, all about the pressures of running a sandwich shop. 27:27 - Coffee Talk is from Toge Productions and has you brewing up hot beverages for fantasy creatures. It’s a pretty laid back visual novel, and it’s perfect for bedtime. 41:04 - Context is key, and sits at the heart of Immortality, an interactive movie (of sorts) from Sam Barlow, Half Mermaid, and Netflix, all about a movie starlet gone missing. 56:56 - Indeterminate growers. All that, and sandwiches, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost) and Kris (@DigitalStrider). Our Spotify Playlist brings together lots of great thematic music inspired by the stuff we talk about. Marvel Snap, The Banshees of Inisherin and Horrified - Ep163
01:08:35
00:00 - True crime. 08:47 - Marvel Snap from Second Dinner and Nuverse doesn’t necessarily reinvent the genre’s mechanics, but what it does with card battlers, it does better (and faster) than pretty much all the others. 22:50 - A slower-paced, smaller-scale movie that’s ghoulish, perhaps even Shakespearean, The Banshees of Inisherin is a dark and funny and profound film you should go out of your way to watch. 36:44 - [Ad] Go check out our pals at Overtired. 37:57 - There’s nothing horrifying about Horrified: Universal Monsters and Horrified: American Monsters from Ravensburger. They’re excellent co-op games with a horror theme that manages to capture the feel of the monsters brilliantly. 51:31 - Picking up onions and peppers over 20 minutes with Point Salad, and building homes for teensy peeps with Tiny Towns - both of which are from AEG. 1:00:44 - The Banshees of… Ed Sheeran? All that, and eventful hairdressers, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Tunic, and Fog of Love - Ep162
01:06:11
00:00 - Alexa, play Staying In Podcast! 07:11 - Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is… just completely out there! We explain why, even if you don’t care all that much about flying games, you need to invest some time in Bandai Namco’s latest entry in the series. 16:44 - Learning, adapting, and trying again is the order of the day in foxy isometric adventure Tunic from Tunic Team and Finji. Like Zelda? Like Heaven’s Vault? You need to play it. 26:41 - The mean, green Marvel machine rolls on with She-Hulk: Attorney at Law now streaming. The TV show comic book adaptation joins the rest of Disney’s line up as an excellent addition, and below its jade-coloured surface is a season of depth and surprises. 37:03 - A while back, Games Workshop took Blood Bowl and made Blitz Bowl, a faster-paced, beginner-friendly take on the core idea of fantasy American football (emphasis firmly on fantasy). With Ultimate Edition now out, we take a look at the previous iteration: Season 2. 49:55 - Fog of Love implies awkwardness, but results in hilarity and enjoyable (?) compromise from its players. We go into how Floodgate Games achieves this and why you should find a very good friend to play it with you. 60:00 - Voicing video game characters. Groovy. All that, and our forward operating base, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Ahoy, One Page Dungeon Contest, and Dungeons, Dice & Danger - Ep161
01:03:43
00:00 - DIY, Oodies, a birthday, and an aversion to wool. 05:51 - PlayStation 4 corker The Order: 1886 (as discussed in Ep156) continues to impress. 10:24 - Everdale (last chatted about in Ep136) is closing down its servers, and now we’re in a sentimental mood, discussing games experiences now gone forever. 17:10 - A special early look at the asymmetrical, pirate-themed board game Ahoy from Leder Games. Lighter than Root, but scratches that itch in a very similar way. 28:51 - Dungeons, Dice & Danger is Ravensburger and Richard Garfield’s new roll and write, and it manages to give maths real personality. This isn’t “just another” roll and write, this is something special. 45:09 - One Page Dungeon Contest is an annual RPG adventure writing competition, asking writers to create a system-agnostic piece of content that fits on a single side of A4, and it’s a great time. 55:57 - Binge shaving. All that, and Fat Willy's, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Village Rails, and Unmatched: Digital Edition - Ep160
01:05:17
00:00 - Listener pal Ben asks us for some gaming recommendations for new parents; exactly which games CAN you play with one hand? 10:27 - Manchester played host to Tabletop Gaming Live 2022, so naturally we were in attendance too. What a great event! 17:56 - We only get to speak about Quarto from Hachette for a little bit, but that’s fine because our feelings about it are simple: you should for sure play it. 19:20 - Osprey Games delivers the goods yet again with Village Rails. In it, you’ll usher in modernity and the age of steam by building a network across the British countryside. 27:14 - You can feel the money dripping off the screen when you watch The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which we’re enjoying a fair bit - but is there a danger in “fantasy” become “mundane”? 43:42 - Acram Digital are one of the greats when it comes to digital tabletop adaptations, and that’s definitely the case with the excellent Unmatched: Digital Edition. 58:42 - We made you a game! You can get What's Better than a Hot Tub? from DriveThruRPG now. Also: Staying In Bingo anyone? All that, and an inappropriate aubergine, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). The Sandman, RRR, and Oceans - Ep159
01:03:02
00:00 - Shoot for the Stars: Round 1. 05:04 - justfortherunofit asks us a very important question. Crumbs… 13:34 - Shoot for the Stars: Round 2. 14:18 - RRR has the best bromance, has the best disclaimer, and just might have the best set of abs. 25:49 - Shoot for the Stars: Round 3. 27:44 - Oceans uses the world of science in conjunction with cardboard fishies to create a lightly educational engine builder. 39:28 - Shoot for the Stars: Round 4. 42:26 - It’s been years in the making, but now Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman is on our screens and it’s a dream come true. 57:26 - Do we need a sign-off? Alright then. All that, and two squeezes and out, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Nope, Décorum, and Hogs of War The Miniatures Game - Ep158
01:02:36
00:00 - Case. Closed. (thanks, McVitie’s) 07:13 - Kris rides a horse. 10:13 - An arctic whatnow? Thoughts on completing Tough Mudder. 15:34 - War Boys VI kicks off with V-Commandos. 17:56 - More drama, strategy, and conflict, with the Undaunted Series (especially Undaunted: Normandy). 21:16 - And yet more War, with the Boys, as we take to the battlefield with Hogs of War The Miniatures Game. 30:20 - Nope is a conversation - an essay, maybe - and the less you know about it going in, the better. 41:57 - It’s a Floodgate Games special, with the expectedly excellent puzzley dice game Sagrada, and the brilliant passive aggressive decorate-em-up Décorum. All that, and the right way up for a chocolate digestive, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). The Orville: New Horizons, Sounds Fishy and In a Grove - Ep157
57:15
00:12 - The creation of “Bubble Boyz presents The Staying In Podcast presents Hot Tub the game”... or something... we should probably come up with a better name at some point. 12:10 - Going ape at Go Ape. 19:24 - Oink Games’ In a Grove is all about solving a murder using deduction, prediction, and a spot of luck, in a tiny little box with wonderful component quality. 27:00 - Need more murder? In Vino Morte is a rioja roulette of social deduction, with wine, poison, and lots of bluffing. 31:20 - The Orville: New Horizons took us completely by surprise! Seth MacFarlane’s previous work is a world away from this sci-fi comedy with heart. 41:02 - Big Potato Games delivers yet again with Sounds Fishy. It asks you to find the correct answer to a series of superb trivia questions, within a sea of “red herrings”. All that, and heading off to bed, with Kris (@DigitalStrider) and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Godtear, Fury of Dracula, and The Order: 1886 - Ep156
01:03:00
00:00 - Pogs are back, maybe? 05:20 - Ready at Dawn’s The Order: 1886 was an early title on the PlayStation 4 that lots of people seem to have slept on… but they shouldn’t have, as gorgeous-looking steampunk shooty bang bangs are the order of the day. 20:08 - Having a hair cut in the same way a cake is iced. 21:44 - War Boys VI: The Road to Valhalla; it’s that time of the year again, when we play a whole bunch of wargames. We got a little bit of time with the gigantic Hogs of War: The Miniatures Game, but quickly moved on to Godtear, a combination of competitive miniatures game and DOTA. We had a blast. 42:34 - Rent, Shuffle and Roll is a board game rental service that’s the Netflix of tabletop games. We’re really impressed with the service, especially because it’s the perfect way to try games before you buy… games like Fury of Dracula. 53:51 - Robin Z popped us a question. Thor: Love and Thunder, FIFA 22 Ultimate Team, and Get on Board - Ep155
01:02:24
00:00 - A letter to DEFRA. 03:56 - Thor: Love and Thunder is Taika Waititi second go with the Asgardian and while it’s lost a bit of the danger felt in Ragnarok it’s still distinctive and well worth watching. 23:32 - FUT! We dip our football-booted toe into the wonderful world of perfect chemistry, aka FIFA Ultimate Team, thanks to Mr. Jones. 43:45 - Eating biscuits the right way… or was it the wrong way? 49:32 - We get on board with, er, Get on Board: New York & London; a roll and write where everyone shares and contributes to the same play space, from Coiledspring Games. 55:13 - Two roll and write reviews in one episode? Oh yes! And it’s Hachette’s Trek 12: Himalaya, with robust core game and a well thought out legacy mode. 58:41 - Pete's fan is from John Lewis. All that, and when it’s too early for a slushie, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Ms. Marvel, Disney Villainous, Crescent Moon - Ep154
01:06:04
00:00 – It’s time to investigate. 05:06 – Ms. Marvel is wonderful. It’s a celebration of cultural identity, with nuance, laughter, wisdom, community… we love it. 28:30 – Lifting the curse with shuffleboard at the Bristol Craft Beer Festival. 32:36 – Disney Villainous from Prospero Hall and Ravensburger is genuinely kind of incredible. The art and component quality is staggering, the asymmetrical play works really nicely, and it’s easy to teach to new players. 49:16 – Crescent Moon is from Osprey Games, Steven Mathers and Navid Rahman. It’s a slightly weird proposition, having a very specific player count. But the asymmetry is streamlined, the game leans into its theme to great effect, and the whole thing has us wanting to play it over and over. All that, and why we’re bonkers for pollen, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Top Gun: Maverick, Jackass Forever, and There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension - Ep153
01:00:39
00:00 - What crisp are you? 03:36 - Top Gun: Maverick is really good. Really REALLY good. And it’s not just a simple nostalgia trip, it’s a well-told story with incredible action scenes, that everyone needs to watch. 26:03 - We’ve loved them since we first saw them, and now the Jackass folks are back with Jackass Forever. And again, while nostalgia plays a big factor, it’s really the bond between the people on screen that keeps us watching. 36:56 - We confirm that in There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension there is no game. 55:29 - The real beginning of r/Mum. All that, and why we feel so tense, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), and Peter (@XeroXeroXero). Long Shot: The Dice Game, Gran Turismo 7, and Everything Everywhere All at Once - Ep152
01:03:38
00:00 - The worst place to stage a stag do. 02:49 - Everything but the act of reading. 05:25 - Gran Turismo 7 is the sequel to… Gran Turismo 2? It’s an expectedly gorgeous simulation racer that goes back to one of its earliest entries for its inspirations. Is this the perfect audiobook game? 21:20 - “Do you think anybody will notice?” 26:00 - Everything Everywhere All at Once is the greatest multiverse movie, one where you just should not even try to comprehend what’s going on that, no matter how wild it gets, always manages to return to a very human story. 36:33 - A return to Pandemic Legacy: Season 2, as we check in with Russell Hobbs. 40:25 - Marvel: Remix turns card drafting into an extremely compelling superhero-based spin on Fantasy Realms from WizKids, with a simplicity to it that is immediately, and overwhelmingly, appealing. It’s a joy. 46:24 - Messing about in the water. 47:43 - Long Shot: The Dice Game is a roll and write and gambling game from Perplext that we’ve been after for quite a while now. It lets you explore the thrill and risk-based skills of real wagering, but in a lovely safe space. 59:59 - The 5th Emergency Service. 00:00 - We talk skin care regime and why it’s important for us fellas. 07:45 - Ready Brek: it’s good. 09:41 - The latest Dr Strange movie is out, we’ve seen it and, generally, we like it - it’s a solid entry in Marvel’s cinematic universe and expands on some of the concepts that have been developed over the last few films. Plus horror. 33:01 - Merchants & Marauders is Z-Man Games’ highly thematic title all about pirates and privateers (and a little bit of “cronch”). It’s a big sandbox of roleplaying, deal-making, and battling, and we like it. 42:51 - The Accord. 44:55 - PlayStation Plus is… fine? But is it good enough when compared to similar services? 50:14 - Joe Richardson’s follow up to Four Last Things is The Procession to Calvary, another point and click journey through a hilarious renaissance world, formed of real paintings from the era. All that, and thir-hy-si, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Our Spotify Playlist brings together lots of great thematic music inspired by the stuff we talk about. Go check it out, if you like. Reacher, Hot Lap League, and Free Radicals - Ep150
01:09:29
00:00 - The foundations of a hot tub. 03:03 - Coiledspring Games’ Photosynthesis sets a new standard for gateway games and feels like it might genuinely be a good option for getting people into the hobby. Plus we get talking about how challenging that actually is. 21:57 - A sauna. The Red Zone. Fika. 34:11 - Hot Lap League reminds us, very deliberately, of TrackMania Turbo which we covered back on Ep4. This slick racer brings time trial-based high precision competitiveness to Android and iOS, and we’re here for it. 45:33 - A very VERY funny joke. Oh and our thoughts on new book-turned-TV-series Reacher. 56:31 - Free Radicals from WizKids Games sure isn’t a gateway game, but its bold use of colours is admirable, and even if it does get utterly silly at times that’s all part of the fun. All that, and a silent scream, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Is it Cake?, Sobek: 2 Players, and Richard Simpson from We’re Not Wizards - Ep149
01:00:26
00:00 - Hot dogs: awkward sandwiches? 03:08 - Is it Cake? Well? Is it? 08:09 - Cryptid: Urban Legends from Osprey Games shakes things up and presents a very different two player experience to the original. It’s tense, mechanically tight, and encourages repeat play. 21:52 - The worldwide shortage of Lorne Sausage. 24:14 - Darby DNA. 27:51 - Our review of Sobek: 2 Players from Hachette and Catch Up Games. It’s a set collection game that breezes by in about 20 minutes, with bright and colourful art, and hints of other classics like 7 Wonders Duel, Jamaica, and Juicy Fruits. 40:33 - Nostalgia reigns with The Matrix Resurrections and Ghostbusters: Afterlife. 54:02 - House of Food All that, and stacking lasagne, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Sam (@MrSamTurner), and Richard (@WereNotWizards). The Batman, AireCon, and Switch & Signal - Ep148
01:26:23
00:00 - The great debate, aka “do you eat or drink soup?” 02:49 - The Batman, a spoiler-free review. 25:50 - AireCon: origins. 37:04 - AireCon: the bring and buy sale. 42:09 - AireCon: meeting up with Hachette, and playing Sobek 2 Players (Catch Up Games) and Ganymede (Sorry we are French). 44:25 - AireCon: our thoughts on Switch & Signal (Kosmos). 58:00 - The Batman, more thoughts, but with loads and loads of spoilers. All that, and semantic enigmas, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Elden Ring, Black Hole Rainbows, and Eyes : Nonogram - Ep147
01:00:04
00:00 - Happy. Birthday. To. You. 07:49 - Kris and Sam’s adventure in a broken car. 15:37 - Forget the discourse: FromSoftware’s Elden Ring is filled with Lovecraftian-ish creatures, rune gathering, wonderful exploration, and becoming increasingly okay with the idea of losing a lot of progress. Also it reminds us of the OSR. ALSO also: there’s a guy called Angry Pumpkin Head, apparently? 37:17 - What are our thoughts about black holes? What about rainbows? More importantly, after that tangent, what about Black Hole Rainbows from June Dune Games Production? It’s a 2-6 player, quick-playing and fairly light game that has absurdly high production values, and took us a bit by surprise by just how good it is. 48:18 - After a little faffing around time on Reddit, we’ve been checking out Eyes : Nonogram from Gamefox. If you’ve played Picross or Murder by Numbers, you’ll be in familiar territory, and it combines excellent presentation with easy interactions and loads of puzzles. 56:34 - The story of the old man. All that, and the location of a book, with Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Uncharted, Roll Camera!: The Filmmaking Board Game, and Horizon Forbidden West - Ep146
01:12:45
00:00 - “I’ll allow a Magnum”. 08:34 - It’s been in development Hell, but Uncharted’s tale of stealing a lost treasure is fun. It stumbles here and there, but the thrill of seeing the series on the screen, and some fleeting moments of excellence, means we’re excited for the inevitable sequel. 19:00 - The Blustery Day. 27:09 - Being back in the world of Aloy is lovely, as long as you’ve played the first game… and we have, so we’re really enjoying Horizon Forbidden West. And gosh it looks glorious with some incredible acting and character animations. 35:06 - High Score lets you gamble in a safe space (it’s a push your luck dice game), with that typical level of polish and quality you’d expect from Reiner Knizia and Kosmos. 39:43 - Almadi is from Funnyfox, via Hachette, and while it’s a teensy bit like Carcassonne, a smidgen like Wingspan, but it’s definitely its own experience. 44:42 - Roll Camera!... oh my word. This is quite possibly the most well-implemented themes-to-mechanics board game we’ve played. Completely co-operative, it’s your job to make a “successful” film from five scenes… but what does “successful” mean? 54:37 - Taking a moment to say thank you. 56:36 - Paratopic is an absurdly high quality cheap thrill from Arbitrary Metric and Baltoro Games. It’s smart and creepy, with looks ripped straight out of the late PS1/N64 era, and Silent Hill sensibilities. All that, and the origins of Poirot’s moustache, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Archive 81, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, and Iki - Ep145
01:01:15
00:00 - The Mallen Streak. 03:56 - Hype for Horizon Forbidden West from Guerrilla Games, and the slight weirdness of it being from the same team behind Killzone. 10:05 - As always, we answer the important question of the day, chiefly: is Lady Dimitrescu from Resident Evil Village everything she’s cracked up to be? 25:57 - Archive 81 is watching people watching people, and we can’t stop watching. Spooky, mysterious, and a lovely addition to your TV watching watchlist. 33:21 - The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is the perfect entry point to Capcom’s visual novel courtroom series. 46:17 - Iki is an ancient philosophy about how to live, and also a gentle gem of a worker movement boardgame from Sorry we are French, via Hachette. All that, and papa’s eaten us all, with Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Paper Girls, Encanto, and Brian Boru: High King of Ireland - Ep144
01:08:15
00:00 - The Secret Life of Peter Willington. 06:46 - Sam’s Swanky New Tablet. 11:24 - Paper Girls is a superb, and occasionally very surprising story from the team of Brian K. Vaughan, Cliff Chiang, and Matt Wilson, and published by Image Comics. 19:23 - Something Secret, Private, and Lovely. 23:31 - Reading M. R. James short stories for the first time, specifically Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad, plus Casting the Runes from The Design Mechanism, which takes its name from an M. R. James short story. We’ve been really enjoying its investigation-based play. 37:41 - Everyone’s talking about Encanto, and with good reason: it has some of the best songs and animation of any movie produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. High praise indeed, but well-deserved. 51:10 - Osprey Games and Peer Sylvester are always a good combo, and they’re behind Brian Boru: High King of Ireland, an always-interesting game of diplomacy, manipulation, and trick taking. All that, and one of us sounds a bit like a god, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Unpacking, Above and Below, and Big Potato TV - Ep143
01:00:35
00:00 - Nap strats and sleep hacks. 06:48 - With Unpacking from Witch Beam Games there’s, well, a lot to unpack. What’s truly brilliant here is the way the storytelling fully integrates with the gameplay, without feeling clunky, and explores a life experience in a delicate way, without being cloying. 21:06 - Above? Below? Why not have both? Ryan Laukat and Red Raven Games have made a truly lovely and pleasantly light Euro game with Above and Below, merging worker placement with a choose-your-own-adventure-like narrative element. 34:28 - We’re big fans of the work of Big Potato Games and Snakesss is no exception. Phil Walker-Harding’s latest is a blend of social deduction and trivia and it works brilliantly - just ask the Mongoose of Truth. 43:54 - We also got a chance to play Big Potato TV, which is currently in beta. It’s great value, even in its work-in-progress state, and an easy way to get more games on the go during family gatherings, even for those people that might typically shy away from them. 46:38 - We’ve been exploring classic movies and rediscovering the joy of just browsing through the Radio Times for cool stuff to watch that you might not normally think of. Plus a chat about how one director aims to help save the cinema experience. All that, and the number one rule, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). A cheeky l’il Spotify Playlist is over on Spotify (obviously), which gathers together lots of great thematic music inspired by the stuff we talk about. Spider-Man: No Way Home, The Taverns of Tiefenthal: Open Doors, and Super-Skill Pinball: Ramp it Up! - Ep142
01:33:54
00:00 - A coward’s New Year’s Resolutions. 05:22 - Spoiler-free Spider-Man: No Way Home chat. We talk about how relatable a hero Spider-Man is, and how much Parker’s world has changed, plus why this is Peter’s film, not Spidey’s. 24:22 - Kris’ New Year’s Resolutions. 27:57 - Super-Skill Pinball: Ramp It Up! brings in four new tables to this glorious roll-and-write, and we think they might just be the best tables yet. We also talk about just how lovely it is to play solo. 41:01 - Dan’s New Year’s Resolutions. 46:43 - Taverns of Tiefenthal: Open Doors! brings more, more, and yet more flexibility and depth to Wolfgang Warsch’s hospitality-em-up, with four new modules sitting neatly on top of the four already included in the base game. 57:33 - Sam’s New Year’s Resolutions. 1:05:17 - More spider-chat, this time ABSOLUTELY FILLED WITH SPOILERS. All that, and the roulette wheel of life, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Hawkeye, Exit: The Game - Advent Calendar: The Mystery of the Ice Cave, and Secret Santa - Ep141
01:01:41
00:00 - A festive crop top and a weekend at Willington’s. 13:40 - Secret Santa, Part 1. 19:06 - Exit: The Mystery of the Ice Cave is an absolute treat: it has great puzzles and an excellent, slow burn narrative. It’s sold out this year, but fingers crossed for another one from Kosmos in 2022. 30:18 - Secret Santa, Part 2. 35:09 - Hawkeye often plays a supporting role in the MCU but in his new series - which is Planes, Trains and Automobiles by way of The Avengers - he’s put centre stage. It’s a lot of fun, with a good mix of humour and action. 47:24 - Secret Santa, Part 3. 56:26 - Twenty Twenty Twix. All that, and a can of Ollie’s, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Dune: Imperium, For the King (and Me), and Eternals - Ep140
01:01:00
00:00 - Leaving the pub with invincibility. 08:20 - Dire Wolf Digital’s Dune: Imperium is a highly thematic worker placement game that successfully captures the political intrigue the franchise is known for. Better yet, it avoids a lot of the pitfalls of similar games, by always offering you something truly beneficial to do, so you never feel like a turn is “wasted”. 15:23 - Magic darts. 17:20 - A reimplementation of Biblios, For the King (and Me) is from Coiledspring Games and Iello and features art that screams personality as the backdrop to a deeply satisfying auction game of continual push and pull. 27:44 - Marvel’s latest superhero movie is Eternals and we have not one, not three, but two claims to fame about its cast. The film itself is divisive, but what we can all agree on is that its core question is this: “is humanity actually worth saving?” 50:04 - Want to learn how to create and publish RPG content to the Miskatonic Repository, in just one month? Then you should definitely check out the Write Your First Adventure Call of Cthulhu Path from The Storytelling Collective. With insights from Ashley Warren and Paul Fricker, it’s a great experience, and not just because it gives you a deadline... All that, and Bruce Willis with a space drill, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Dungeon Scrawlers: Heroes of Undermountain, Disco Elysium, and Call of Cthulhu Starter Set - Ep139
01:01:47
00:00 - Buying an apartment is boring. And very very expensive. 08:28 - The Call of Cthulhu Starter Set is one of the neatest pieces of introductory design; a great way to get into Chaosium’s legendary roleplaying game, which gets across the writings of Lovecraft really well, in an all-round excellent package. 29:32 - Dungeons & Dragons: Dungeon Scrawlers: Heroes of Undermountain is another great introduction to RPGs, but in this instance, to the world of Dungeons & Dragons itself, rather than the rules of D&D. A light, lovely experience. 42:20 - You can trust in Disco Elysium. ZA/UM’s hard-edged CRPG is challenging and dangerous in all the right ways, with fascinating choices, brilliant writing, and a wonderfully grim playground to explore. 55:36 - Hospitals and bananas. All that, and a £3 meal deal, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Like nice music curated into lovely curated lists? Give our Spotify Playlist set a listen. Dune, No Time to Die, and Little Factory - Ep138
59:59
00:00 - What to do with an extra hour. 07:27 - We went to watch Dune at the IMAX and realised that, for a film with the budget of a Hollywood blockbuster, it’s a surprisingly cerebral and mature adaptation of the novels, where the little things are what stand out most. This generation’s Lord of the Rings? Quite possibly... 29:17 - No Time to Die is the 25th Bond movie, and an appropriate send off for Daniel Craig’s take on James. A good movie, then, but who is the best Bond, and why is it Pierce Brosnan? 50:31 - Little Factory from Iello is a lighter touch resource management game perfect for families. Why? It’s easy to explain to a new player and, importantly, easy to understand the logic of the mechanics. It’s also very nice to look at... in some ways, it’s the board game equivalent of Everdale. All that, and a Krisalis, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Still not sure what to do with your spare hour? Give our Spotify Playlist set a listen. Super Arcade Football, Midnight Mass, and Greece Lightning - Ep137
56:51
00:00 - Willington Day, our favourite seasons, and the number five. 03:46 - "You couldn't read it". 07:04 - Super Arcade Football is from OutOfTheBit - of Super Arcade Racing (as heard on Ep77) fame - and it’s a delightful “jumpers for goal posts” game that feels like a spin on Sensible Soccer, but given a modern fit and finish. 28:57 - WizKids’s latest is Greece Lightning, which is somewhat of a racing board game simulation of Wacky Races in that it requires deviousness, cunning, and a little bit of luck. 40:43 - We’ve been chomping through Midnight Mass, which has a Jamesian “pleasing terror” to it, and is, in many ways, more unsettling than Midsommar. Perfect for a bit of Hallowe’en spookin’. All that, and some unacknowledged hiccups, with Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Oh and hey! Deathloop, Squid Game, and Last Message - Ep136
01:02:04
00:00 - Butter spreading dangers. 02:07 - We hop on the Deathloop bandwagon and talk about why this cyclical murder sim from the folks at Arkane Studios is inspired by old school roleplaying games. 23:55 - Sam’s wild claims of popularising Pogs at his school, plus talk of Squid Game, which is a deadly version of Taskmaster directed by Lady Gaga. 36:51 - After aggressively competitive games with names like Boom Beach and Clash of Clans, Supercell’s latest is called Everdale, which is the nicest ever logistics simulator. 44:49 - Absolutely obscene tea drinking. 48:13 - How the Where’s Wally? trend is propelling the board game industry forward, as evidenced by whiteboard-based detective ‘em up Last Message from Coiledspring and Iello. All that, and the other zeitgeists, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Wordscapes, Mazescape Labyrinthos, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings - Ep135
01:06:28
00:00 - Lightbulb moments. 03:20 - Dining out at the cinema and why Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a fantastic kung fu movie, with a more-grounded physicality in a universe where everyone has laser beams shooting out their eyes. 21:49 - What’s bigger than Kris's lunchbox? Being a VIP. 25:42 - We’ve been spending lunch breaks playing Mazescape Labyrinthos from Devir. The premise is very simple - just find your way through a maze - but that’s only the beginning, and the game builds and builds upon this idea to result in a satisfying solo experience. 33:44 - Imagine a crossword puzzle crossed with Scrabble; that’s Wordscapes from Peoplefun Games. It’s simple, light fun, testing and improving your vocabulary skills in a free-to-play mobile game where the hand of the monetiser is rarely felt (if you turn off the ads). 44:36 - A huge thank you to Mark (@lithiumproject) for sending us a question for this episode, which is: what are the best two player board/card games? All that, and taking a cup of tea hostage, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). The Suicide Squad, Anno 1800, and The Bart Bonte Collection - Ep134
01:01:34
00:00 - Play it slow or play it fast, SUPERHOT VR might just be the best way to experience the stylish first person shooter where times only moves when you do. 05:44 - A spice challenge at Seitan’s Corner. 09:13 - Anno 1800 is from Martin Wallace, via Kosmos Games and Ubisoft. It’s got a heck of a large footprint on the table and at first glance appears off-puttingly dense, but this board game adaptation of a classic video game series is actually highly thematic, and really quite approachable. 29:24 - We’ve talked about his recent mobile games before here on the podcast, but the Bart Bonte Collection is a compilation of 28 games, originally made in Flash, available now on Steam. This tapas-like selection of excellent little experiences is a great example of both video game preservation and, in a way, a kind of gaming archaeology. 41:00 - Look, we all know that Suicide Squad was awful. But The Suicide Squad? That’s a whole different kettle of sharks. 53:04 - Reviewing incinerators. All that, and hoofing games, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Flesh and Blood, UK Games Expo 2021, and Masters of the Universe: Revelation - Ep133
01:06:07
00:00 - Using Lara Croft-esque flares for romantic photography. 03:30 - No matadors whatsoever. 05:04 - We had a fantastic time at the UK Games Expo this year, and the organisers did a brilliant job of making it feel as welcoming and safe as possible. Last year’s digital version - which we did a… unique?… video for was all well and dandy, but it’s wonderful to meet up in person and get hyped again for board games. Plus, we spill the tea on the attendees of The Festival of Quilts. 09:34 - Kris’s booty. 16:56 - We popped over to a booth run by Kingdom Gaming of Northampton at UKGE, as they were running Flesh and Blood, a TCG from Legend Story Studios that’s really starting to pick up a lot of plaudits, for one key reason: it’s real good. There’s a satisfying tension between playing cards and keeping them, a great back-and-forth between attack and defence, and a huge reduction in the amount of frustrating luck seen in similar games. 26:51 - Another great find at UKGE was Stop the Train! from Escape Plan Board Games. Fans of Werewolf will be right at home, but there’s more than enough here to set it apart from the classic social deduction games, with a train track providing a visual reminder of time running out, and individual conflicting goals casting suspicion left, right, and centre. 31:44 - Themeborne’s Escape the Dark Castle was at UKGE in a big way, so we took the opportunity to give it a go, and we’re super glad we did. It’s a mix of Choose Your Own Adventure and deck-based dungeon crawl, by way of the OSR; grim and perilous adventures, unique enemies and characters, and just the right combination of tactical nuance, ease of play, and some very flavourful writing. 37:51 - It’s always a pleasure to catch up with Bez at a show, someone who is perhaps one of the most prolific and consistent game designers with their ELL Deck (the new name for Wibbell++, which we’ve previously covered). We got to play a new game - possibly created at the show itself! - called Coupell, a “flip and write” that will put your vocabulary to the test. 42:14 - “You get a lot of game for your money” is a phrase we think is going to be synonymous with Merv: The Heart of the Silk Road, from Osprey Games. Pop on a spiced tea and take in the beautiful art, all while building an economic engine in an ancient city. 50:41 - The very deliberately named Masters of the Universe: Revelation TV series has an amazing cast, an incredible soundtrack, and a compelling storyline that successfully draws and builds upon 130 episodes of lore. All that, and He-Man’s colleagues, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Black Widow, Alone Against the Tide, and Genesis Noir - Ep132
01:07:20
00:00 - The Calippo Shots generation. 04:38 - A bit of a saga. 07:21 - Black Widow is an action thriller in the MCU that explores some pretty dark and deep themes surrounding the character. It’s a good movie, with extremely visceral action scenes, but it doesn’t feel like a “phase 4” film. 19:40 - The solitaire Call of Cthulhu adventure Alone Against the Tide sits somewhere between Alone Against the Flames and Alone Against the Dark; it’s a solid challenge, but very approachable, with lots of cosy (?) psychological horror. 32:45 - Our pal Damien Faulkner asks the hardest question we’ve had to answer: just what are the must have Switch games? 45:43 - Genesis Noir is like an interactive art installation; a monochrome, film noir point and click theme, inspired by the works of Italo Calvino. It’s from Feral Cat Den and Fellow Traveller Games, and it’s wonderful. 55:07 - Getting Busy with the Knizy, and his latest games! Lost Cities: Roll & Write is from Kosmos, and it's a game that gives the Lost Cities feeling (obviously), but it's more approachable and, importantly, you can play it on a couch. AND we look at Royal Visit from Coiledspring Games and Iello, that has just enough edge and grit to its tug of war gameplay to make it super engaging. All that, and The Kris Turn, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Loki, A Gentle Rain, and Imperium - Ep131
01:01:57
00:00 - Sleeping with Stephen Fry. 05:56 - It’s coming home. We’re going out. 09:00 - Marvel’s latest TV series - Loki - has aesthetics that are very reminiscent of A Clockwork Orange but, secretly, it’s the best Doctor Who series yet. 24:43 - The Willington Variants. 26:52 - We get into meditation with Mondo’s A Gentle Rain, an unbearably simple-sounding game, from Kevin Wilson, a person who we thought didn’t make simple games, but who has created a purposefully meditative game that really is an exemplary piece of design. 40:52 - Imperium Classics and Imperium Legends from Osprey Games are part of a set of superb and very generous deck builders that really get across the feeling of building a civilization. Plus giggling about murder, and people we look like from history. All that, and a lovely spot of ASMR, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Overboard!, Blades in the Dark, and EXIT: The Sacred Temple - Ep130
59:04
00:00 - UEFA Euro 2020 (actually taking place in 2021), plus: it all kicks off. 03:37 - We attempt to get away with murder with the keeping-your-story-straight simulator Overboard!, which appears to have come out of nowhere from inkle - the team behind Sorcery! and Heaven’s Vault. It’s glorious, with superb writing and a unique approach to “open world” game design. 18:00 - Surprise: we’ve joined a cult! But don’t worry, we’re actually only playing John Harper’s Blades in the Dark. Published by Evil Hat Productions, it’s inspired by things like Dishonored, Thief, and Peaky Blinders, with a mechanical focus on cutting to the chase, and a heavy emphasis on telling stories about risks, heists, and murder. 36:45 - A very lazy use for a Fitbit. 43:15 - The brilliant EXIT series from Kosmos has evolved over time in some fascinating directions, and for EXIT: The Sacred Temple it’s grown to include some mysterious new jigsaw puzzles that are incredibly engineered and have pushed the play length out longer and altered the pacing. All that, and being woken up by DVD menus, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Inkling, The Expanse, and Call of the Sea - Ep129
01:01:50
00:00 - A couple of rounds of toast before bed. 04:51 - Kris’s Special Place, aka Board Beans Cafe. 12:07 - Helvetiq and Coiledspring Games’s GoTown reminds us of Silk and Fluxx, but it has a sense of internal logic that calms the crazy and makes it all make sense in the end. Another “throw it in the bag” game, if ever we saw one. 19:31 - First there was Scrabble, then there was Bananagrams, and now there’s Inkling, an astonishingly good, super accessible word game from Osprey Games that’s an exercise in word chaos. 28:23 - The Expanse and its expansion Doors and Corners from WizKids feels, in some ways, like Geoff Engelstein’s take on Twilight Struggle. It’s got politics, it’s got intrigue, and it’s got some of the same mechanics, but it’s also got science fiction and a more compelling, streamlined experience, and if those things sound good to you, it’s well worth a look. 45:44 - Call of the Sea comes from Out of the Blue and Raw Fury. It’s a brighter, more beautiful take on the Mythos, with touchpoints like Myst, The Witness, and Silent Hill, all the while reminding us of Lovecraft’s ghost written and Dreamlands work. All that, and The Great British Public, with Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). It Takes Two, Muffin Time, and Wide Ocean Big Jacket - Ep128
59:10
00:00 - An alternative to exercise? 04:23 - A trip to Yorkshire and an unusual use of steam trains. 09:37 - Master Word is a cross between legacy game, word game, and deduction game, from Scorpion Masque and Coiledspring Games. You’re going to absolutely love it, just like we did. 14:42 - Muffin Time is by the people behind the popular web series asdfmovie and Big Potato Games. We talk about why the Trap Cards are so smart, how it keeps you on your toes at all times, and why you shouldn’t sleep on using the all-powerful blank cards. 26:31 - Hazelight Studios once again proves they’re the leaders in co-op video games experiences, with It Takes Two for PC and consoles. It’s a game for couples, in more ways than one, and when it’s not dropping new mechanics, it’s making you laugh uncomfortably with its dark sense of humour. 42:45 - At an hour long, Wide Ocean Big Jacket demonstrates a rare economy of storytelling in gaming. A well-scoped story, delicately told, with natural dialogue and eminently relatable characters; you really do need to play Turnfollow’s short and sweet adventure for PC and Nintendo Switch. 52:25 - We Make Someone’s Dreams Come True with the competition results from our previous episode about Forks in the Timeline. Unmatched, The Mitchells vs The Machines, and Forks in the Timeline - Ep127
54:16
00:00 - Golf on a farm and penny pushers. 08:08 - Our first round of Kepler Games’ Forks in the Timeline. 16:44 - When you don’t quite see eye-to-eye with the rest of the family. Plus the excellent The Mitchells vs The Machines, which comes from the same team behind The Lego Movie and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. 31:31 - Forks in the Timeline 2: Giraffe Neck Foodaloo! 34:27 - Unmatched: Battle of Legends is a super fun miniatures game featuring the likes of King Arthur, Alice, Medusa, and more that gives us similar vibes to Magic: The Gathering but with a much more approachable feel. It’s from Rob Daviau, Justin D. Jacobson, and Oliver Barrett via Coiledspring Games and Restoration Games. Plus: the campaign to create a Miss Havisham vs Winnie-the-Pooh set starts here. 48:55 - Forks in the Timeline 3: What’s Under The Christmas Tree? Bandido, Outriders, Burgle Bros 2: The Casino Capers, and Mark Robinson of Link To The Cast - Ep126
57:20
00:00 - How you might know if you’re Unbreakable. 04:38 - Burgle Bros 2: The Casino Capers from Tim Fowers, is the sequel to a board game we first talked about on Episode 1 way back in 2016. Playing as a team of criminals on a caper, sneaking about and trying not to cause a commotion, this impressive follow up to the first game has been well worth the wait. 15:42 - Games you'll put in a bag (working title). 18:36 - The puzzle-like, reverse labyrinth board game Bandido from Helvetiq and Coiledspring Games has a small footprint, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in quality. 23:05 - The understudy for bread. 29:47 - What the f*** is OUTRIDERS, eh? We find out more about Square Enix’s always online combination of Gears of War and Borderlands, how it relates to Cowboy Bebop, and if it’s really a cover-based shooter if it doesn’t want you to stay in cover? 42:59 - Solo tabletop roleplaying in Chaosium’s Call of Cthulhu, with Alone Against the Dark, a 7+ hour long openworld-ish gamebook of cosmic horror, deadly encounters, and timekeeping. All that, and chocolate bar conspiracies, with Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), Sam (@MrSamTurner), and Mark (@lithiumproject). A big thank you to Mark Robinson for joining us. You’ll no doubt remember him from Ep85, or from his excellent video game podcast, Link To The Cast. The Red Cathedral, MicroMacro: Crime City, and Control: Ultimate Edition - Ep125
01:01:51
00:00 - The great fountain pen hack of the 1990s. 03:02 - MicroMacro: Crime City from Pegasus Spiele is a curious mix of Agatha Christie, Where’s Wally?, and the EXiT series, that just keeps on giving. 15:25 - Joining the PlayStation 5 club, the most exclusive club of them all right now, surely? Also: how (and why) the PS5 tries its best to keep you playing. 34:39 - Control: Ultimate Edition is creatively risky and every bit is expertly crafted, making it a strong contender for the best AAA game of the last ten years. 45:27 - The Red Cathedral is from Llama Dice, and it’s all about Saint Basil's Cathedral (the one with the “ice gems”). It’s beautiful, and it’s super thematic. 58:11 - How 2 rite propa All that, and a niche joke about the Freemasons, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). 01:07:44
00:00 - Deus ex macbina. 06:54 - The complicated backstory of Bananaman. 10:46 - A bit more on Polis, which we talked about back on Ep122. 15:00 - Seastead’s “altruistic competition”, flexibility in ruleset, and focus on inclusivity is a wonderful special event for two players, from WizKids. 33:28 - Holidaying in virtual worlds, and going for a relaxing wander with Eastshade, where the side quests just might be the main quests. 49:18 - tobyfox's Undertale, and why an annoying dog is representative of so much that’s truly amazing about this gem of an RPG. All that, and apex predator trash cans, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Sam (@MrSamTurner), and Pete (@PeteySteele). Thanks again to Pete Steele for joining us. Legends of Andor, Celtic, and Space Brothers - Ep123
01:00:16
00:00 - The magpie. 08:18 - A birthday and a dirge. 20:54 - Relaxed yet competitive, chilled yet tense, Celtic is a set collection game for the family from The Plastic Soldier Company and Pegasus Spiele that, on paper, shouldn’t work, but it really does. And why there’s a lot of value in going back to old board game mechanics. 35:03 - Most manga is rubbish. Finding good manga for grown ups is difficult. But Space Brothers from Kodansha? It’s consistently excellent, slice of life sci-fi. Plus: more manga recommendations. 46:15 - Michaela Kienle and Michael Menzel’s Legends of Andor, published by Kosmos, is absolutely incredible: it’s sprawling and epic, completely approachable, perfect for the whole family, and something to savour. 01:00:07
00:00 - Dan’s birthday, Rudy’s Pizza, and Many More. 06:49 - Kris's "Consumption to Creation Ratio". Freaking ourselves out with Chris Bissette’s The Wretched, making memories with Thousand Year Old Vampire from Tim Hutchings, and writing poetry with Allison Arth’s Gentleman Bandit. 26:26 - Kosmos Games throw down the gauntlet with Polis, from Fran Diaz and Enrique Corominas - the art for which you can see on our Instagram. It’s a big, heady, heavy experience, where every decision you make has its consequence, and we love it. 43:30 - Exploring the superb resource that is Taming Gaming from Andy Robertson, which highlights video games that examine various themes through a number of lenses, including how suitable for the whole family they are. Renature, Daylife in Japan, and Between Two Castles of Mad King Ludwig - Ep121
01:00:16
00:00 - We like to eat eat eat Apples and Bananas. We lake to ate, ate, ate ay-ples and ba-nay-nays. 07:14 - Daylife in Japan is a cheap and very cheerful jigsaw puzzle game we’ve played on Switch, by Minimol Games and QUByte Interactive. Want a meditative game to play while listening to audiobooks? This might just be it. 20:43 - Wolfgang Kramer and Michael Kiesling’s Renature is a wonderfully relaxing experience with just enough salt in the pancake (by which we mean “competitiveness”) to lift it to great heights. Also: a big hello to our podcasting pals at Two Can Play That Game. 33:06 - What’s YOUR favourite castle? And have you ever seen Dan and King Ludwig II in the same room together...? 38:30 - A love letter to Bezier Games, Stonemaier Games’ Between Two Castles Of Mad King Ludwig is also super relaxing, and might just be better than the originals they’re taking inspiration from. You can see what it looks like on our Instagram, along with Kris’s completed jigsaw of the Moon. 46:53 - We’ve had two-part question in from @MyTaintedBrain, who asks “What is your favourite genre of board/video game, and what is the last book you read that you really enjoyed? 00:00 - A jigsaw of the Moon. 06:54 - How to play Lost Cities wrong. Very wrong. And incorporating baby-friendly player aids into board games. 12:35 - Reiner Knizia’s Schotten Totten 2 is more thematic, more focused, and easier to get others into it than its previous iteration. 23:08 - A true centrepiece for any happening party. 26:32 - Disney’s new WandaVision TV series is shaping up to be a unique and brave entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. 41:20 - Horribly painful car troubles. 50:58 - Frog Detective 2: The Case of the Invisible Wizard was exactly the right game at exactly the right time: it’s short, sharply written, and thoroughly lovely throughout. 01:01:26
00:00 - Sam's mug. 04:54 - Kris's mattress. 09:02 - Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, a high concept spy thriller that’s “the first time travel movie”, but perhaps it doesn’t explain itself enough? 27:12 - Knights and Bikes is from Double Fine and Foam Sword, and it’s a completely riotous co-op craftpunk adventure with a great sense of humour. 44:00 - HeidelBÄR’s Coyote and Spicy are brilliant bluffing games with gorgeous artwork that has to be seen to be believed (and reminds us of an animated Johnny Cash...) 57:20 - How a new habit gets started... but will it be a good one? When and where would you travel to? Because we have thoughts. 44:41 - Solving picture mysteries with Murder by Numbers, and why Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered is the antithesis of scrolling through Netflix. Enjoy video games? Been living under a rock for the last month? We reckon you’ll be pleased to hear about Innersloth’s Among Us. And if you don’t, you’re sus. 01:11:48 - Secret Santa, part 4 - plus expanding on Colt Express with Marshal & Prisoners from Ludonaute, and a cowboy hat. 01:17:55 - Probably the best launch game on PlayStation 5, a showcase for the new hardware, and a love letter to the history of PlayStation: we talk ASTRO's Playroom and get all misty-eyed for the Multitap. 01:04:02
00:00 - Crunchy Nut Peanut Butter and very thick milk. 06: 42 - A cartoon-like, one page RPG that is tremendous fun: we’ve played Honey Heist by Grant Howitt and had a great time with some bears in hats. 18:57 - Squirty cream “as a vehicle”. 23:30 - Taking early steps into FIFA 20’s Ultimate Team (and its similarities to Pro Evo’s Master League mode), playing with friends with Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, doing cool skids in Lonely Mountains: Downhill, and other paternity cover games. 35:16 - Up for some co-opetition? Rome & Roll from PSC Games is delicious and satisfying, and not just because it reminds us of cheese, dough, and tomato sauce. 48:06 - Illimat from The Decemberists and Keith Baker is the kind of game John Dee (Queen Elizabeth I’s court astronomer) would play. Intrigued? You should be, and we’ll tell you all about this strange and brilliant board game. All that, and they’re grrrrroggy! We talk Ticket to Ride and the digital adaptation of it that we’ve been thoroughly enjoying. 16:20 - Cóatl is crammed full of bright and lovely plastic, has a very pleasing Aztec art style, and is a super elegant bit of game design that’s one of the best in its genre. 25:15 - The Lost Words from Kosmos is based on the children’s book by Jackie Morris and Robert Macfarlane. It’s a beautifully illustrated, tranquil, light game that’s perfect for high tea. 35:59 - The avoidance of doomscrolling by getting into Reddit - shout out to r/Showerthoughts and r/OSR - plus a discussion about a fantastic post about board games and value. 51:00 - Bingeing Taskmaster (tARskmARster) is exactly what’s needed at the moment. Tapestry: Plans and Ploys, Metro X, and Super-Skill Pinball: 4-Cade - Ep114
01:00:34
00:00 - An intensely heated debate: is a Twix a biscuit or a chocolate bar? 07:53 - Tapestry: Plans and Ploys continues to build upon the foundations of the lean(ish) civilization-creating original, and also continues Stonemaier Games’ tradition of featuring beautiful components. 21:07 - Some grumps bang on about how they don’t like Halloween, and an alternative is discussed: Falloween. 31:08 - The Three Stages of Boardgaming, solitaire games, and David Parlett’s Penguin-related money-making schemes. 35:30 - Coiledspring and Gamewright’s Metro X gives us flashbacks to the London Underground and mastering a tube map. Plus: very good nibs. 42:19 - Super-Skill Pinball: 4-Cade is from Wizkids and Geoffrey Engelstein (the Ludology podcast, Gametek, Pit Crew etc). It’s “giddy fun” and, we think, perhaps the perfect solo game. All that, and a spooky podcast pitch, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Sam (@MrSamTurner), and Peter (@XeroXeroXero). Fort, Enola Holmes, and Anomia - Ep113
01:00:50
00:00 - Forgetting names and confusing idioms. 03:10 - A graduation, but whose graduation? 06:10 - Making rum, plus the sweetly thematic Fort from Leder Games, in which you pretend to be kids building bases, using pizza and toys to curry favour with Icky and Sticky. 17:44 - Al's FINEST wine and socially distanced martial arts. 21:52 - From humble packaging comes something we had a ton of fun with; Coiledspring’s Anomia is an extremely good party game. 30:50 - Twin It. Love it. 33:11 - Enola Holmes is fantastic, and Millie Bobby Brown brings a welcome level of handiness to the character. 38:42 - Back to school. 41:10 - Our time with Basic Fantasy Role-Playing Game pretty much started with a total party wipe. And it. Was. Awesome. It’s glorious. All that, and the wonderful Richard from the We’re Not Wizards podcast (@werenotwizards), with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Sam (@MrSamTurner), and Peter (@XeroXeroXero). Pendulum, Hotshot Racing, and Stay Cool - Ep112
01:01:48
00:00 - The Home Alone Meal Deal, and first movies. 09:13 - Hotshot Racing looks and sounds great, the racing model is spot on, but you’ll want to put most of your time into the time trial mode, and we’ll tell you why. Also, go watch Get Indie Gaming. 20:57 - Every Breath You Take. Every Slice You Make. 27:45 - Pendulum from Stonemaier Games (them what did Viticulture) is a “rollercoaster” of a board game, a superb experiment in the worker placement genre, and perhaps the perfect board game cafe game. 45:39 - Eulogy For Brannigans. 48:48 - Stay Cool is from the same folk that brought you Decrypto, and if that’s not enough to sell you on it, then you’ll just have to listen to the podcast for more insight into why we like it, I guess. All that, and Adele, with Kris (@DigitalStrider), Sam (@MrSamTurner), and Peter (@XeroXeroXero). Want some tea-themed Spotify playlists? Of course you do! Pop to our Spotify playlist page for those. Ghost of Tsushima, Trapped and Sabotage - Ep111
01:05:27
00:00 - The Egg Saga. 09:40 - A trip to Vale Street in Bristol, and leaving the house for a curry. 12:28 - Ghost of Tsushima, Akira Kurosawa, and the satisfaction of feeling powerful when playing as a samurai. 22:37 - An amazing quad biking adventure in Greece. Top tip: check your headlights before setting out. 28:23 - Set dressing the house and tackling the play-it-at-home escape room Art Heist, from The Fantastic Factory’s TRAPPED series. 38:00 - Sabotage is yet another absolute humdinger of a board game from Fowers Games, and how to spend an extra £500 on it by buying a brand new table. Plus when Kris met Tim on We’re Not Wizards. 49:55 - Getting our cartographer juices flowing by making overworld maps for Basic Fantasy Role-Playing Game by using Hex Kit by Cone Of Negative Energy as an “inspiration generator”. 01:03:17 - The debate continues. All that, and Waterloo, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Sam (@MrSamTurner), and Peter (@XeroXeroXero). Looking for tea-themed Spotify playlists? My City, Superliminal, and Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout - Ep110
59:30
00:00 - Fridge biscuits and a shocking revelation about eggs. 08:59 - Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, why it’s Fortnite crossed with Takeshi's Castle, and its obvious similarities with The Last of Us Part II. 26:59 - With UK Games Expo going digital this year - calling it Virtually Expo - we were asked by our pals at Kosmos if we wanted to be part of their booth. We did! And we talk about how our video about food and board games pairings turned out. 33:29 - Fans of Portal, The Stanley Parable, and The Witness are going to really like Pillow Castle’s Superliminal, which plays with scale in a smart and sometimes hilarious way. 41:39 - If you’re getting into the hobby of board games, Reiner Knizia’s name comes up a whole bunch, being considered one of the very best designers in the business. His legacy game is called My City, and we think it’s a great “My First Legacy Game” for people looking to try out the sub-genre. All that, and the correct place to keep ketchup, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Sam (@MrSamTurner), and Peter (@XeroXeroXero). Looking for tea-themed Spotify playlists? 00:00 - An update on some PlayStation IAP problems. 07:24 - SOMEONE has become a Certified Beer Server with the Cicerone program. Can you guess who? 15:08 - We play a spot of the phenomenal party game Herd Mentality from Big Potato, which are the same folks behind Don’t Get Got, which we talked about back in Episode 95. 26:52 - A desire to get into woodworking, and a love of astronomy? ... or was it astrophysics? ... or was it astrology? 31:51 - Dan's Haircut and a Glastonbury story. 38:42 - Alley Cat Games’ Pocket Sub, Gamelyn Games’ Ultra-Tiny Epic Galaxies, and the appeal of small box games. All that, and learning the impossible, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Sam (@MrSamTurner), and Peter (@XeroXeroXero). OH! AND! Descent Into Dread Vol. 1, Skater XL, and Targi: The Expansion - Ep108
01:00:17
00:00 - 15,000 who-gives-a-toss credits. 11:21 - Skater XL is an entirely skill-driven skating simulation and it's been fascinating seeing it progress from Early Access to full release. Plus the year extreme sports games started coming back, and our history with the best in the genre - y'know, stuff like Skate, Thrasher: Skate and Destroy, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. 29:13 - A smashing yurting holiday, the joys of outdoor BBQ, getting all excited about pizza ovens, and the luxury of indoor toilets. 32:51 - Caliber Comics has a new horror anthology called Descent into Dread: Vol. 1 up for pre-order on Comixology and in print on Amazon, and we've been sent a copy for an early look. And it's been lovely to dip in and out of its genre-blurring, expectation subverting stories. 42:42 - We've been exploring the superb two player series of games from Kosmos. Lost Cities is a game that gets a ton of table time, Kahuna gets better and better the more you play with the same player, and what we think just might be the ultimate two player game: Targi. All that, and pizza-related activities, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Sam (@MrSamTurner), and Peter (@XeroXeroXero). OH! AND! Cartographers, Hypnospace Outlaw, and Root - Ep107
59:15
00:00 - Exciting adventures with caffeine. 07:33 - "The Enid Blyton and George R. R. Martin crossover you didn't know you needed"... we finally get to play asymmetrical strategy game Root from Leder Games, via the wonderful Board Beans board game cafe. 18:47 - Hypnospace Outlaw, whether or not Zane rocks (he doesn't), the Space Jam website, and an explanation of what Yahoo! GeoCities was. 29:47 - Uncomfortable haircuts and a betrayal (sorry Tony). 33:35 - The best Pringles, plus "flip and write" Kennerspiel des Jahres nominee Cartographers: A Roll Player Tale from Thunderworks Games. 49:30 - A question from @lonegamesman, who asks: "do you consider Kickstarter (board game, video game or other form of project) a force for good or the downfall of civilisation? Or maybe something in between? Do you like what Kickstarter offers as a potential backer?" Viticulture, Adventure Games, and Tiny Bird Garden - Ep105
01:00:03
00:00 - Slipmington. Patent pending. 09:03 - What little we know about wine, and what we love about Stonemaier Games' Viticulture Essential Edition, a relaxing worker placement in which you run a vineyard. 23:30 - Escape room games at home, including Sherlock Holmes from The Panic Room, and Exit: The Game - Theft on the Mississippi. 32:31 - Recreating the PC point and click adventure in a tabletop game, via Adventure Games: Monochrome Inc. 44:45 - The birbs in Tiny Bird Garden makes us feel #blessed, and it's the toyetic clicker for mobile and PC that we didn't know we wanted. 53:09 - Batman: Arkham VR puts you in the cowl of The Caped Crusader really well, we just wish there was a little bit more. Lonely Mountains: Downhill, Gorogoa, and Qwirkle - Ep104
01:03:23
00:00 - Sam's 'superpower' and Kris's least favourite theme park. 07:20 - Gorogoa is gorogorgeous, how different mediums handle pacing a story, and the definition of a visual novel. 19:35 - The natural, chilled beauty of Lonely Mountains: Downhill, and why its ability to get you into a state of flow is perfect for listening to audiobooks to. 30:58 - In a great way, Pentago reminds us of games with grandparents, which is a great abstract game from Coiledspring Games that "does to Othello what Onitama does to The Duke". 38:25 - But OH BOY, Qwirkle might be even better (and its components are superb too). A top choice for families, we reckon. 49:15 - The question to us this episode is from listener pal Nicky, who asks "have you played any old games that you had forgotten you really liked?". All that, and very satisfying experiences, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Sam (@MrSamTurner), and Peter (@XeroXeroXero). Devs, Break the Code, and Ion Fury - Ep103
01:00:10
00:00 - The Peter-Minute-Ton. 03:23 - Lockdown hair cuts. 08:03 - Break the Code is a fantastic deductive puzzle experience, but what's not fantastic is losing a bit of it under some decking. 28:23 - We're divided on Devs. Is it some of the best television of the year? Or is it boring and, at times, a bit clichéd? 39:59 - Ion Fury is highly evocative of days-gone-by playing Duke Nukem 3D and Blood, so much so that we talk a bit about retro shooters and their revival. 50:17 - Callum Elcombe provides our question for the episode, which is "I have 2 Audible credits, any recommendations? I'm into good modern day crime fiction, and geek culture thrillers like Ready Player One, Daemon, Reamde". Thanks pal! Ring Fit Adventure, Dark, and Welcome to New Las Vegas - Ep102
01:03:18
00:00 - Dancercise with Ryan Heffington, and line dancing up to the oche. 06:31 - Oh sure, Ring Fit Adventure is an indoor exercise masterpiece of games design. But does that mean Ring can say what he likes about our shiny muscles? 17:24 - Well, we're finally here: discussing beer subscriptions. 19:34 - Like a Belgian Quad, Brew Crafters from Greater Than Games is initially foreboding, has lots of depth, and is very very big. 34:07 - Welcome To New Las Vegas from Blue Cocker is a roll and write that we've fallen in love with. It's no longer a breakfast game, but that's not a problem in our books. 44:43 - Dark is... well... it's dark. It's also compelling and mysterious and twisted and you should probably watch it. 53:14 - Animal Crossing: New Horizons sure is lovely, isn't it? All that, and Bob Ross painting, with Alix (@EruditeWolf), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Sam (@MrSamTurner), and Peter (@XeroXeroXero). Links to where you can find us - StayingInPodcast.com |

01:00:39
00:00 - Loyd Grossman impressions and other things that show our age. 05:55 - Some of our favourite things to enjoy during lockdown so far have been the comforting certainty of MasterChef and the relationship-testing Animal Crossing: New Horizons. 11:30 - "To have theatre in the house is amazing" - National Theatre Live at home is a thing of wonder and a super accessible way of seeing the stage. 16:19 - The Darby Family Quiz, and a very prescient video game-doing-good: Kind Words (lo fi chill beats to write to). 27:06 - 1 Survives is an indie gem from Tip the Table Games that blends set collection with slasher horror, and is a perfect opener to a spooky games night. 34:53 - NSV and Phil Walker-Harding's Silver & Gold is keeping the roll and write (or is that flip and write?) addiction going. 42:45 - Our question this episode comes from our pal @baileyneil, who asks "as a solo player of console games and a non-board game player: are there any great board games for solo playing?" All that, and Lady Macbeth on a trampoline, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Sam (@MrSamTurner), and Peter (@XeroXeroXero). Links to where you can find us - StayingInPodcast.com |

Two Point Hospital, Wingspan, and Tiny Heist - Ep99
59:47
00:00 - Something called an ISTQB, the linen finish high quality of Wingspan ("the most beautiful game I own"), and the lesser spotted Trivia Tidbits. 12:40 - Relationship advice and Mini Eggs. 14:35 - Omerta has a really good rhythm to it and we think it's "a breath of fresh air". 25:22 - The guy with the games on holiday. And is taking eighteen games away with you too many? (probably) 27:25 - We start talking about Two Point Hospital, then get de-railed by PlayStation Max magazine, and pictures of a young Sam Turner. 33:34 - Two Point Hospital is a meditative medical management game with superb writing that takes a great formula into the modern era. 48:26 - "I was really taken back with how much fun everyone was having and how much fun I was having" - we're big big fans of Tiny Heist. 56:39
00:00 - Miniatures games, what makes BattleTech fun to paint, and why the hobby is oh so therapeutic. 08:43 - The sensory overload of Arcade Club in Bury. 15:09 - The Crew: The Quest for Planet Nine is a deceptively tricky trick-taking game that feels incredibly fresh and different. 32:19 - Parasite won best picture at the Oscars, which it fully deserves, and we'll tell you why you MUST see it (without spoiling a thing). 40:03 - Obsessed with roll and write games? Us? Never. Honest. But also: Encore! 48:30 - Some lies about Kit Kat Chunkys. 50:12 - Robyn Zwicker has a question for us this week: "have you ever had a crush on a cartoon character?" Some of the answers will surprise (and perhaps upset) you. All that, and not burying the lede, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Sam (@MrSamTurner), and Peter (@XeroXeroXero). 00:00 - An adventure in AI Dungeon, aka The Halfpipe Chronicles. 07:12 - A technological trip into the wonderful world of PSVR, the perils of VR horror, and exploring all the new experiences to have in virtual reality. 20:23 - Brikks is the "analogue Tetris", and yet another banger from our fav, Wolfgang Warsch. 31:00 - More from The Halfpipe Chronicles. 36:25 - Looking for the antithesis to imperious games like Settlers of Catan? We've got it for you, it's the frightfully good Spirit Island. 46:41 - Adam has a great question for us for this episode: "with the next generation of consoles on the horizon, never mind what they look like, how do you think they will differentiate the disc cases from current hardware disc cases?" Thanks pal! 52:05 - The penultimate chapter of that classic epic: The Halfpipe Chronicles. All that, and some ollie watching, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Don't Get Got, Jojo Rabbit, and Chuchel - Ep95
59:37
00:00 - H. G. Wells, a true literary genius? 05:04 - TwentyPlenty. 11:15 - Don't Get Got from Big Potato Games is a mix of silly party fun and intense paranoia that demands creative thinking and social nous to outwit your loved ones. 33:30 - Jojo Rabbit is Taika Waititi's darkly-tinged comedy about why hate is so stupid, and while it can be an uncomfortable watch, it's a worthy one. 45:46 - In an energetic mood? Then Amanita Design's Chuchel - a riotous combination of puzzler and point-and-click adventure for mobile and PC - is for you. Halo: Reach, Decrypto, and Advanced Squad Leader: Starter Kit #2 - Ep94
01:04:53
00:00 - Halo: Reach is out as part of the Halo: The Master Chief Collection so we head down memory lane to discuss the series. 16:00 - Do we make it to 2020? Find out at the end of the show! :o 20:15 - As usual, we've got the hottest takes. This episode? Our thoughts on Sam Neill going topless in sci-fi horror movie Event Horizon. 25:07 - Marvel's Spider-Man is wrapped up, but after the game's ejected from the PS4 we wonder if open world narratives work well in video games, and how important roleplaying can be for the overall enjoyment of being in these worlds. 44:25 - Decrypto and its first expansion Laserdrive are brilliantly thematic, 1950s spy-ish board game that really does make you feel like a codebreaker. Another banger from Coiledspring Games, we reckon. 56:38 - The end of the lovely BGG Secret Santa 2019 experience, and jumping in two-feet-first with Multi-Man Publishing's Advanced Squad Leader: Starter Kit #2. All that, and cereal-flavoured booze, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Sam (@MrSamTurner), and Peter (@XeroXeroXero). 00:00 - The Fingers Dilemma. 07:03 - "Kojima-esque" and other words to describe the game one of us has made with the extremely accessible, creativity-inspiring game development software Pixel Game Maker MV. 20:39 - Our question comes from our pal "Dr. Kenneth A. Barnes" (@SuperKMx), who asks: which fictional duck is the best duck? a) Edd the Duck, b) Donald Duck, c) Scrooge McDuck, or d) Howard the Duck. And from this question, comes a revelation. 31:07 - Night School Studio is back with boozy indie adventure Afterparty, which we sum up as "Dutch courage, the video game". 41:52 - We've been playing Kingdomino Duel and Sushi Roll, two fantastic spin-off games that might... whisper it... be better than the originals. 57:20 - The Important Call. 00:00 - The benefits of the multi-screen setup, and Sandra Bullock as an unbelievable hacker. 06:57 - The 20th anniversary of The Matrix, and a trip down memory lane. 23:34 - Scythe is a strange but elegant mash up of lots of board game genres, plus a dissection of bad tutorials in digital tabletop adaptations. 40:33 - Ticket to Ride: New York is just the right size of game (about 20 minutes). 51:49 - Baba Is You throws you at literal and metaphorical walls, but that's okay, and you should persist, because it's completely brilliant. 56:28 - The Ultimate Licensed Video Game. All that, and a pirated cable box, with Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Mark (@lithiumproject). Dandy Dungeon - Legend of Brave Yamada, Feed Me!, and Roll Dice Gaming - Ep83
59:27
00:00 - Roll Dice Gaming is a solid addition to the UK tabletop event calendar, and 2019's weekend was "a good first event" (even if we didn't get a goodie bag!), but it's currently a bit lacking in an identity to call its own. 09:45 - From Gen42, the folks who brought you Hive, comes Feed Me!, which is coming to board game stores this Christmas. We saw it at Roll Dice Gaming and it's a physics-y puzzle game that's a bit Pachinko, a bit Rube Goldberg machine, and more than a little Cut the Rope. 20:25 - Woof. 25:20 - Meditation. Mindfulness. And games like Stardew Valley that transport you to a peaceful, relaxed state of mind. 35:15 - Dandy Dungeon - Legend of Brave Yamada is an odd game with a strong pedigree, that's a blend of puzzle-infused dungeon crawling RPG, and critique of the games industry, and it feels just right on Switch. 45:45 - Our listener question this week comes from our pal Adam... or was it Greg? Anyway, he asks us which real life statistic we would want to know about our own lives. Plus bonus guest appearance from Lisa, who argues with an apostle. All that, and the calming properties of public transport, with Peter (@XeroXeroXero) and Sam (@MrSamTurner). 59:38
00:00 - Being painfully middle class and watching people with real jobs go about their business. 13:33 - Our pal @twpercival1 has a question for us, which is: "why when people remake a film is it a remake, but if you remake a song it's a cover?" and we then proceed to talk about Honey, I Shrunk the Kids for an extraordinary amount of time. 23:13 - A competition to read the Discworld novels, a rivalry-inducing board game app called ScorePal, and a daily check in via Daylio. 37:40 - A smooth segue and a Charity Miles update. 45:18 - What film should never be remade? We have an answer. 47:47 - The light and breezy TV series, Chernobyl. Super Mario Odyssey, TowerFall Ascension, and York - Ep75
59:33
00:00 - Super Mario Odyssey is great, with a surprisingly compelling narrative hook, and has convinced us that maybe, just maybe, 3D Mario games can work as well as the 2D ones. 09:29 - Stag Part 1: fun and games and fizzy beverages at Sam's stag in York, plus RAF facts. 14:41 - Stag Part 2: Sam Bingo came to a rapid end, the best salt and vinegar crisps, and "the great normaliser" that is FootGolf. 20:09 - A big welcome to Winston, Superkmx, Adamski, Andy Barton, Robyn Z, and (probably) a member of the landed gentry, in our Charity Miles update. 26:21 - Stag Part 3: A very special recording session at Precentor Studios which, if you want to subject yourself to it, can be found on our YouTube channel. 37:37 - TowerFall Ascension from Matt Makes Games is an arrow shooting arena shooter where you always feel like you're either playing like absolute rubbish, or amazingly well. 44:13 - Stag Part 4: lovely York, Samikers, and post-stag rebuild. 49:04 - Which of the current squad at Aston Villa makes the best cup of tea AND has the keenest eye for painting miniatures, and is it John McGinn? 58:22

Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Sails of Glory, and The Betway Reds - Ep61
59:09
00:12 - How to make homemade mud (with Milliput, for Burrows & Badgers miniatures). 03:26 - Things get Napoleonic with Sails of Glory from Ares Games. 17:06 - Mission: Impossible - Fallout is the sixth outing for the film series. Weirdly put together, apparently, but still great, it turns out. 25:31 - Our fantasy football league is going well, but weirdly, so here's a Game Week 1 update. 31:01 - Dan's gone and bought his first graphic novel, which is The Adventure Zone: Here There Be Gerblins. 36:35 - Kris and Sam have been on their holidays and they will not shut up about it. 48:09 - Great holiday games? Survive: Escape from Atlantis!, Cobra Paw, Carcassonne, and The Mind, so sayeth Kris and Sam. 51:29 - The Exit: The Game series is great, we've said as much on previous episodes, but Sam's just taken on The Sunken Treasure and Dead Man on the Orient Express, and they come thoroughly recommended. 53:32 - Barbie Horse Adventures or Britney's Dance Beat? That's the question you've asked us, and by gosh that's the question we're going to answer. Got another one for us? Mail us on stayinginpod@gmail.com or DM us on Twitter or Facebook. All that, plus interspersed sounds of tea being brewed, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner) in a somewhat topsy-turvy episode of our silly little podcast. The Mind, Fantasy Football, and Cities: Skylines - Ep60
58:17
0:00 - Dan's going to be running a fantasy football league, and is hoping you'll take part! Prove him right by heading to fantasy.premierleague.com, nabbing an account, and entering 1089139-244175 as the code to get involved! 5:00 - Kris has gotten himself into a pickle with a christening card. No, we didn't think it was possible either. 13:35 - Should The Mind have won the Spieles des Jahres for 2018? Maybe! Sam certainly makes a good case for it. 22:17 - Yorkshire puddings and toffee sauce, the concept of “post-modern snacking”, and why you need to think like a child to truly appreciate genius. 28:15 - Look, yes, sure, we talk about Civilization V AGAIN in this episode, but it's a good game! Unless you're a complete beginner, which is one of the subjects around that title that we try and tackle. 37:30 - Another subject is how games can encourage you to learn through failure, and why that can work if done well, like in Cities: Skylines. Sam and Peter have been hard at work managing their citizens needs and wants in a manner that's got them thinking about whether a game can ever truly escape being “political”. 45:33 - “What would you dive into a pool of?” That's the question posed to us by @Adamski_UK via Twitter, and the answers are... well... you'll hear soon enough. And if you've got a question for the chaps then please DM them to us on Twitter or Facebook, or mail them via stayinginpod@gmail.com That, plus the story of two prawn cocktails, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Warning! We use Amazon Affiliate links where it makes sense in our podcast description. If you click one, then buy something on the store, then we get a tiny fraction of a kickback from that store. Loffee, FTL: Faster Than Light, and Into the Breach - Ep59
59:52
01:06 - We've not talked about it before, but Sam absolutely LOVES vinegar. So much so that he gives his chips a "double soak", which is about as eye-wateringly acidic as you think. 05:24 - What we HAVE talked about before is seasonal playlists for music, and it being Summer, we think Loffee is the perfect accompaniment to this time of year. 10:23 - Kris went to Dortmund and had a lovely time of it, but he discovered two shocking things. 1) that he actually does like beer (when it's accompanied by fruit and / or vodka), and 2) that you can swap out the sausage from “pigs in blankets” for an entirely unexpected ingredient and it's pretty hecking tasty. 16:05 - XCOM 2 is "probably my favourite game" says Sam, and it's got to partly be due to the fact you can name your characters. And on that note... 17:58 - Dan's been playing FTL: Faster Than Light and Sam's been playing Into the Breach, both of which are from Subset Games and in both of which you can re-name your characters (so that's an immediate thumbs up, obviously). They both talk about why they're enjoying these games so much, delving into FTL's roguelike spaceship-em-up and Into the Breach's mech puzzle strategy. 35:36 - This section is all about Sam’s Leaking Pipe™. 41:00 - Dan's thrown more money at the upcoming Shenmue III, to snag himself a physical copy of the game. So it feels like a good time to discuss why the originals were so pioneering back in the day and, to some extent, how they were very demanding of their players. 52:09 - And we have another question to read out, this time courtesy of Richard from We're Not Wizards, and it's all about tattoos and cannibalism, so that's nice. If YOU would like to send us a question about tattoos, cannibalism, or something else entirely, then DM us on Twitter or Facebook, or send us an e-mail via stayinginpod@gmail.com if that floats your boat. So catch up with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), and Sam (@MrSamTurner) in this episode and, if you've got this far in the description of this podcast then, hello friend, we would love for you to vote for us over on the PodcastAwards.com, full details of how to do so are right at the start of this episode. The Last of Us Part II, Gain Ground, and McQueen - Ep58
57:38
Take me down to time stamp city, where the times are stamped and it's not actually a city; 0:00 - We find out all about a very special carb-based de-stress routine and a very exciting (?) Bristol corner shop. 4:40 - It's back to the late 80s and early 90s for a spot of reminiscing on Seinfeld, as well as Peter's secret favourite subject, Gain Ground, on account of him currently playing SEGA Mega Drive Classics. There's also an explanation of how evolution works that probably has Darwin spinning in his grave. 20:35 - Yeah yeah, E3 2018 is long gone, but by jove Kris wants to talk about Spyro Trilogy Reignited as he's a huge fan of that purple dragon. We also decide that both the Resident Evil 2 Remake and the Final Fantasy VII Remake are poisoned chalices, and relate all this to Gus Van Sant's 1998 remake of Psycho, because we're fancy like that. 32:00 - More E3 chat here, focused on some god tier trolling by certain video game studios, and Dan's love of the look of The Last of Us Part II. We go into the important questions: does the original need a sequel when it has THAT ending? Will it deliver something the first one didn't? And why have a load of dorks got all flustered about a kiss? 43:10 - Kris has been off to the cinema (no details on if he used The Grift or not, sadly) and he's seen a documentary called McQueen. Appropriately it's a documentary about legendary fashion designer Alexander McQueen who, from all accounts, was a right cheeky chancer. Kris thought the film was great, and he'll tell you why. 46:53 - Oh my gosh, it's our first ever listener question and it's a strong one. A huge thank you to @Laneit360 for sending us it, and if you have one for us, you can get in touch via direct message on Facebook or Twitter, or e-mail us via the address listed on our Contact Us page. And then at the fifty seven minute and thirty eight seconds mark, all the wittering from Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), and Peter (@XeroXeroXero) is over for, oh, about another two weeks from now. Please note that we do use Amazon Affiliate links in some of our show notes. If you don't know what that is, then you can click here to find out why it's all perfectly innocent, honest. Barrier, Pokémon Quest, and Burrows & Badgers - Ep57
52:36
We're doing time stamps now? How F.A.N.C.Y. 0:00 - We kick things off with hot takes about pomegranate juice and other awful concoctions that only fools and children would make, like blackcurrant and milk, and apple juice with orange juice. There's also a combination that only Kris's brother would make, and you'll find out about that in this section too. 2:50 Then it's off to the UK Games Expo at Birmingham's NEC for “the best convention I've been to” according to Peter, and the first part of our report from the show floor. First up it was By Fire and Sword, a teeny tiny historical wargame that looked like amazingly complicated fun. 14:20 - Then it's on to Wreck & Ruin, a post-apocalytpic vehicle combat board game that is a) pleasantly surprising, b) very accessible, and c) looking for your money on Kickstarter right now. 17:30 - There's a quick excursion by Kris to Lumino City, which pretty quickly gets wrapped up in a conversation about... 20:38 - … Pokémon Quest on Nintendo Switch, and the subject of mobile gaming in general. Does it matter which device you play a game on? Sam seems to think so, and he's probably right. 29:45 - This is where we head back to Brum for even more of the expo and “one of the darlings of the show” - the astonishingly plucky Burrows & Badgers from Oathsworn and Osprey Games. 38:30 - We're pretty disillusioned with comics at the moment, but there are a few stand outs that we've been carrying on with, and none is more important than Barrier from Brian K. Vaughan, Marcos Martin, and Muntsa Vicente. 45:41 - We round out the show with the last leg of our UK Games Expo tour and the acquisition of the pretty wild 1989 pen and paper classic Batman Role-Playing Game, from Mayfair Games. It sounds as good as you think it sounds. So pull up a chair and join Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner) for the latest episode of our nice little hang out sessions where we talk about all the neat things we like. Reminder: we occasionally use Amazon affiliate links in these descriptions. They've not earned us a single penny yet, but just in case you were wondering what they were all about, you can find out here. OH HEY THIS BIT IS IMPORTANT! If you'd like to be the first person to e-mail us and ask us a question about the things we've talked about or what we think about a certain thing or if Kris really can eat that many sandwiches, then pop it to us via Twitter, Facebook, or e-mail, all the details for which are here. Deadpool 2, A Way Out, and the Games Media Brit List Awards - Ep56
01:05:32
Everyone remembers Kuri Kuri Mix, right? Sure you do! Just as well, as we'll refer to it when talking about A Way Out, the latest game from those folks at Hazelight Studios. And on the subject of making a getaway, we've also been playing various entries in the Exit: The Game series, which are essentially tabletop game escape rooms. Elsewhere there's a whole bunch on the Games Media Brit List Awards, which we went along to and where we had a lovely time. A big Staying In Pat On The Back to our pal Adam Rosser from BBC Radio 5 live for his win in the podcast and radio category, and congratulations too to our Kris for managing to eat an entire pizza during the event. We continue to get to grip with our thoughts on Magic: The Gathering Arena, partly in relation to the latest set of Dominaria cards, but also in relation to indestructible horses. And then there's Deadpool 2, an excellent film that you should definitely turn up late to. All this, plus a full ten minutes of discussion about rocks, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). And you know what REALLY rocks? Transparency. Which is why we always tell you that we occasionally use Amazon affiliate links in these descriptions. You can find out all about what they are right here. If you want to ask us a question which we'll bring up on a future podcast, then drop us a line via Twitter, Facebook, or e-mail, all the details for which are here. God of War, The Magpie Murders, and Jurassic Perk - Ep55
01:06:19
Kerby is a great street game to play after dark, we all know that. That's obvious. Bushido from GCT Studios is pretty strong too it turns out, as is that God of War jam from Santa Monica Studios. The latest performance of Macbeth by the RSC? That's good too. And so are Anthony Horowitz's The Magpie Murders, Liu Cixin's The Three-Body Problem, and Frank Herbert's Dune. All the things mentioned? They're all just smashing. But you know what's the best? The absolute BEST? The fact that we managed to get a handful of decent coffee-based dinosaur names thought of within the space of about an hour. Honestly, it's the greatest. So join Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner) for a grand old chat about nice things, plus puns. Something else that's good: transparency. So on this point, we do occasionally use Amazon affiliate links in these descriptions where we think it makes sense. You can find out all about what they are and what they do, right here. And hey we think you're really super too, so why not be extra fantastic and send us a question we can discuss on an upcoming podcast? Details on how to get in touch with us are here. Avengers: Infinity War, Magic: The Gathering Arena, and the Cursed Book - Ep54
01:26:25
Oh good lord, where to begin? You should know straight off the bat that there are huge Avengers: Infinity War spoilers in the last 30 minutes of this episode - which happens to be our longest ever episode! But don't worry, we give you plenty of advance warning before they hit. Seriously though, don't listen to that section if you haven't seen the film yet. Also the language used in this episode is pretty blue at times, as the last few weeks have been... hectic, to say the least. We're experimenting with bleeping the worst of that stuff out from now on, and you'll hear why. What have we been doing? Well, apart from watching Marvel's MCU crossover spectacular and engaging in The Great Cineworld Grift, we've also been on holiday to Salzburg, Vienna, and Budapest, and we'll tell you a bit about what we got up to there. The beta for Magic: The Gathering Arena is currently in-progress and we've netted ourselves access to it, so we've been diving back into the world of slinging spells and walking on planes just in time for the Dominaria release. Is this digital version any good? HECK YES, and we'll tell you why. Regular listeners will also notice how this episode has gone out slightly later than we usually like. That's because of an unexpected trip to accident and emergency. WANT TO KNOW MORE? Then check in with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner) and maybe also look at these accompanying photos. As usual, we occasionally use Amazon affiliate links in these descriptions where we think it makes sense. You can find out all about what they are and what they do, right here. Annihilation, Civilization V, and Holiday Games - Ep53
01:06:10
We do our best to not be absolutely insufferable about our Games Media Brit List nomination in this podcast. Are we successful? Probably not. What else? Oh yes! We've been playing The Battle of Polytopia's multiplayer for months now - since the beta even - and we're ready to talk about how this update adds to our impressions of the single player offering. Be prepared for INTENSE DISCOURSE. On a similar note, there's a load in here about our recent experiences with Civilization V. Things like “how it's a great tool for telling stories with gameplay” and “why we now don't much care for the Aztec people”. We also talk about the perfect games to take with us on an upcoming holiday where we (affectionately) throw Rahdo under the bus, plus why Alex Garland's recent work - Annihilation - should have had a cinema release. All this, plus far too much food thanks to Easter in Slovakia, and using sayings that don't actually exist, with your pals Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). As always, we sometimes use Amazon affiliate links in these descriptions where we think it makes sense. You can find out all about what they are and what they do, right here. Ready Player One, Assassin's Creed Origins, The Darkside Detective, and Dave Ryan from Link to the Cast - Ep52
59:18
Up for some hot new video games action? Well tough, because we're talking about why the shooting in Titanfall 2 is so gosh darn good. Sorry to pull a fast one on you like that. We cool? Cool. There's also Assassin's Creed Origins talk too, that's kind of new, right? Regardless, it's providing us some excellent opportunities to wander around Egypt and partake in a little digital tourism, a thing we're also up to with the astonishing Yakuza 0. We were lucky enough to be joined by Dave Ryan from Link to the Cast on this episode, and he brought a wealth of knowledge and insight into the topics we covered, including how history is portrayed in games versus how history is taught in schools, plus the indie game development scene in Ireland, and specifically a great-sounding point and click adventure called The Darkside Detective from Spooky Doorway. Then there's a big old chunk of Ready Player One discourse about the book and film and how we're hoping its numerous references to all sorts of stuff in geek culture has been handled "authentically"... whatever that means. By the time you've finished reading this you'll hopefully have the episode downloaded, so pop on some quality headphones and have a brew with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Dave (@DaveRyanIV). If you've NOT finished downloading yet, then hello, here's the bit where we tell you that some of the links in this description point to Amazon, and if you you buy something from that store after clicking through our link, then we get a little referral fee, which we then use to make this podcast sound better. We still cool? We still cool. Oh and also: we've been nominated for a Games Media Brit List award in the category of Best Podcast & Radio. We found out after recording this episode, but we'll probably be talking about it on a future episode (and flaunting it every moment we get). Ten Candles, Hidden Agenda, and Cosmic Encounter - Ep51
53:38
Games, games, and even more games: that's the general theme of this episode. There's a big discussion about Cosmic Encounter and why you probably need to play it twice to really start appreciating its galactic strategy. And when we're not ruling the universe, we're mucking about on a boat in one of our favourite RPGs: Ten Candles from Cavalry Games. We also hook up to PlayLink on the PlayStation 4, checking out Hidden Agenda from Supermassive Games in the process, which is a tense game of deception and mystery where you use your mobile phone, via the console, to choose the outcome of a scene and shape the narrative as it progresses. Plus snow. Plus Babycham. Plus exercise. It's a whopper. Sound good? Great! Check in with Sam (@MrSamTurner), Dan (@ThisDanFrost), and Kris (@DigitalStrider), all recording together, with Poppy watching on, supervising. Thanks for downloading the podcast. If you'd like to do us a big favour, we'd love it if you left us a review. Also, hey, you know those Amazon affiliate links we're doing? Yep, they're still going. So if you click on one of the links here and it happens to go to Amazon, and if you happen to buy something there, then you'll get everything for the same price and we'll get a small kickback, which we then use to make the podcast better. Black Panther, Monikers, and Hunt for the Ring - Ep50
57:44
How did Kris's mum accidentally get involved in the Copenhagen drug scene? Could Sam figure out who "not the guy with the bolts" was? Which one of them manages to casually drop the phrase "Chekhov's Gun" into a conversation? If you'd like to know the answer to these questions, give this episode a listen. And there's some other stuff too... Like why one of us is absolutely head-over-heels in love with Hunt for the Ring from Ares Games, and how that lovely little Lord of the Rings-based board game compares with the much darker Whitehall Mystery from Fantasy Flight. And how Monikers is a great little party game. And how Dixit is ALSO a great little party game. And how Dixit might just have the edge on Monikers. Then strap in for a good long discussion on Marvel's Black Panther and why it's funny, progressive, and extraordinary. All that and more on episode 50, with Sam (@MrSamTurner) and Kris (@DigitalStrider) and occasionally Poppy, having a lovely little bit of nerd chat. Oh and since you're the best sort of person (the sort of person who reads podcast shownotes), once again a HUGE and heartfelt "thank you" for downloading Staying In. If you've left us a review on your podcast platform of choice then you can add a great big bear hug into the mix from all of us. Also, can you believe some people don't read shownotes? What are they like, eh? All the best jokes for the podcast are in here. Also a reminder that occasionally we use Amazon affiliate links in these descriptions, so when you click through from us to something on that online store, if you end up buying something there then you get it for the price you normally would, but we get a little kick back from The Very Big Book Seller. We've already got enough gold-plated suits and stretch limousines to last us a lifetime, so rather than pocketing the cash we make from the podcast it goes back into buying nice new equipment so we sound better, or we chuck it into advertising so we can reach even more lovely listener pals like you. Dear Esther Live, The LEGO Batman Movie, and Sunless Skies - Ep49
01:04:07
Should 30 year old men be allowed to say “sick” and “dope”? By the end of this podcast the lads will have convinced you that no, no they absolutely should not. But light DIY tasks and watching Hey Duggee? Oh yes, that's very much more in our wheelhouse. There's a fair bit of LEGO in this episode too. Not only is there a contender for the worst LEGO sets ever created - Final Duel II - but there's also our very divided opinions on The LEGO Batman Movie. Then it's off to the concert hall we go, discussing Dear Esther Live, Vivaldi, Beethoven, and whether you need to listen to a 30 hour lecture series - like the one by Dr. Robert Greenberg that Peter listened to - before entering the auditorium. And it's off into Victoriana-themed space with Sunless Skies, the excellent follow up to Sunless Seas, that is currently in Early Access on Steam. It's not sold as well as the last game for some reason, which is baffling, considering you get to fly about among the stars in a steam-punk train rocket! All that and more, with Sam (@MrSamTurner), Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), and Peter (@XeroXeroXero). A very big thank you to everyone who has left us a review on their podcast platform of choice so far. We love getting your feedback, so keep it coming! This episode is supported by the nice people at CastBox, which is a very good app for listening to podcasts to. They've previously championed this little thing we do each fortnight, so a big thank you to them for spreading the word about the show. And from this episode onwards we're going to start using Amazon affiliate links in these descriptions, when it makes sense. So if you click through one of our links, and if that link happens to go to Amazon, AND if you end up buying something, then you'll get it for the regular price and we'll get a small commission. Rather than taking the money we make on ads, putting it in a vault, and diving into it like Scrooge McDuck, instead we funnel this cash back into advertising the podcast to help us get more people like you to give us a try, or buying better equipment for when we record. So it's win win, hopefully. For links to topics covered - http://stayingin.podbean.com Find us on Twitter - @StayingInPod Find us on Facebook - @StayingInPodcast

The Book of Dust, Ten Candles, and Metal Gear Survive - Ep48
01:09:14
✓ Board Games ✓ Video Games ✓ Good Books ✓ Invasive Medical Procedures It's another textbook episode of Staying In. There's chat about a new fitness thing they're all doing (well... almost all of them), a couple of minutes where they gush about My Brother, My Brother and Me, and a couple more minutes after that where they basically just rip off My Brother, My Brother and Me's whole thing. Plus thoughts on Philip Pullman's The Book of Dust (and why it's better than Harry Potter), a big heap of bleh as we discuss the disappointing Metal Gear Survive beta, and why some very meaty games are on the horizon for us as a group, including Cosmic Encounter from Fantasy Flight, Hidden Agenda from Supermassive Games, and Ten Candles from Cavalry Games. So pop the kettle on, make yourself a brew, and settle in for another serving of the podcast where a group of pals talk about the geek stuff they love and the ***** that have been up their *****, with Sam (@MrSamTurner), Dan (@ThisDanFrost), and Kris (@DigitalStrider). Oh oh oh oh oh! A really big thank you to YOU for taking the time to join us for this episode. If you like it then please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, or wherever you get your podcasts. And if you can't leave a review (or you just don't want to), consider telling your friends about the show instead, as it really helps us out a whole bunch. Or alternatively don't do any of that. I mean, it's your life, you do you. For links to topics covered - http://stayingin.podbean.com Find us on Twitter - @StayingInPod |

Overcooked, Fortnite, and InnerSpace - Ep47
58:04
It's 2018 and we're talking about Noel's House Party A WHOLE LOT. That show was great and the board game is... well you'll find out when you listen to the podcast... cheers, Robin. We also get to grips with the Nintendo Switch, Overcooked, Snipperclips, and think about why non-gamers might find it difficult to get into video games. Being the avant-garde gamers that we are, we then go on to talk about Fortnite and how we're using our winning "hunkering" tactic (hiding in corners), and taking flight in musical exploration game InnerSpace (which is NOT the 1987 fantasy sci-fi flick). All this, plus puffins, Porgs, and why we don't get invited to the cinema anymore, with Sam (@MrSamTurner), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Kris (@DigitalStrider). Oh by the way, if you're not subscribed to us on the platform you're listening to us on right now then we'd really love it if you did. We're available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Mixcloud, Stitcher and basically everything else too, and we're always thankful when you leave us a review there too (hint hint). Boss Monster, Guild Wars, Dungeons 3, and Greg Giddens from This is Xbox - Ep46
01:20:41
Pretty sure this episode is a good candidate for the "Most Gaming Chat on a Podcast" award which I just made up just then. There's Stardew Valley's farming loveliness, the chilly magic of Winter's Day in Guild Wars 2, and the serenity of painting Bushido wargaming miniatures. Then there's some very even-handed loot box chat, why PlayStation VR might just be better than Vive VR, and building and running dungeons in Boss Monster, Dungeons 3, and Dungeon Keeper. All that, plus New Year's resolutions and more discussion about milk than you'll know what to do with, from Alix (@EruditeWolf), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Greg (@GregGiddens). As noted at the end of the podcast (and in that paragraph you just read) we're joined by special guest Greg Giddens, who can be found writing at ThisIsXbox.com, plus doing all sorts of other fancy things with words, video, and audio over on GregGiddens.com. As always, a big thanks to you for downloading the podcast! If you're not already doing so then do please subscribe to us on whatever platform you're on right now - and if this one isn't working out for you, we're available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Mixcloud, Stitcher and just about any other one you care to mention. If you feel like leaving us a review on any of those as well, we'd really appreciate it. Did you spot how I mostly copied this whole bit from the outro of the podcast? And with that cheeky start to 2018, from everyone here we hope you have a fantastic year. The Christmas Special - Ep45
58:52
Alright, straight up, if this is the first time listening to the podcast, maybe go back and listen to another one instead, as this is a slight departure from our usual brand of talking about stuff what we like. Because this is our Christmas special and, as usual, we're doing our Secret Santa and waxing lyrical about this time of year. We discuss how we might fare at being three wise men, talk Christmas routines, weigh in on bread sauce, share presents, and reveal the greatest Christmas movie ever made (probably). All that, plus the reason why aeroplanes are not powered by farts, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). OH YEAH and this is the part where we usually ask you to review us or visit some profile we've set up somewhere or whatever, but instead of that rot we're just going to wish you a fantastic Christmas. And if you don't celebrate Christmas, then whatever you're up to instead, we simply hope you have a great time and a wonderful end to your 2017. Paranoia, Kingdomino, and The Good Place - Ep44
01:04:06
How do you do, fellow kids? Have you checked out Rhino Hero: Super Battle yet? Well we have and we think it’s lovely, and we tell you all about it on the latest episode. The equally lovely medieval city builder and tile-placing euro game Kingdomino gets a look-in too. If you’re after something equally breezy, then there’s also a discussion on why the cultural statements that Watch Dogs 2 attempts to make are at odds with its core gameplay, leading to a curious and jarring ludonarrative dissonance that rings false. We use the term "commedia dell'arte" at one point too, because we’re fancy like that. There’s a quick chat about why new comedy The Good Place is Michael Schur, Kristen Bell, and Ted Danson at their finest, why one of us has decided to run Twilight Imperium soon, and why Red Dessert Topping and severe eye wounds don’t really mix in darkly comic pen and paper roleplaying game Paranoia. And alright, look, it’s December, okay? I think it’s fine for us to start talking about our upcoming Secret Santa stuff... right? That’s all neatly packaged up into just over one hour of three pals talking into microphones for the hopeful enjoyment of others - those pals being Kris (@DigitalStrider), Sam (@MrSamTurner), and Peter (@XeroXeroXero). If you’d also like to be a pal to the podcast then you can leave us a review and rating on the platform you got this podcast because that sort of thing really helps us out. Thor: Ragnarok, DC's Metal, and Creamfields - Ep43
01:02:04
Thor and Hulk and Waititi, Batman and Snyder and Capullo - some combinations just work better than others, and we talk about them at length in this episode. Because first up there's what we thought of Thor: Ragnarok (spoilers: we liked it a whole bunch), then a little bit of Goddess of Thunder chat, plus a whole bunch of spoiler-filled splurge on DC's Dark Nights: Metal comics. Also one of us is going to see Above & Beyond, which immediately spawns a chat about illegal substances FOR SOME REASON, and one of us has been saving spiders and hanging out on a porch roof. And talking about animals, what do you think they dream about? And what do you dream about? And do you remember Shadow Man? And who is Gabriel Logan? And will we answer all these questions in the space of about, oh, ten minutes? Yes. We will. All of this and more performed in front of a live studio audience of exactly one house rabbit, with Alix (@EruditeWolf), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Sam (@MrSamTurner), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and the spirit of Dan. And hey listen, I know we ask this every episode, but for real this time, if you could leave us a review and rating on the platform you got this podcast, we would be ever-so grateful as it really does help us out a whole bunch. Especially you Gavin, you owe us one. For links to topics covered - http://stayingin.podbean.com Find us on Twitter - @StayingInPod |

Darkest Dungeon, Warbands: Bushido, and The Polybius Conspiracy - Ep42
01:06:32
If you're a fan of turn-based strategy then boy howdy are you in the right place. Because there's all kinds of tactics-based chat throughout, taking in Darkest Dungeon and the Crimson Court DLC, digital miniatures title Warbands: Bushido, and genre flagship XCOM 2. That's a lot of strategy gaming. We also delve into The Polybius Conspiracy, a creepy new podcast from Radiotopia that explores a video game that never existed... OR DID IT? There's also even more golf (it's the new Witcher 3!), scuba diving, planning a wedding, and some very serious pretending to be a nun on the run. Plus one of us exposed themselves to a bunch of strangers. Find out who as Alix (@EruditeWolf), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner) talk about nerd stuff for an hour and a bit. And like always, we could really do with your help spreading the word about the show. There are two ways you can do this: a) tell the next person you see about the show, and b) review our podcast on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, or wherever you're subscribed to Staying In. Golf Story, The Expanse, FIFA 17 - The Journey, and Peter Chapman from Oddworld Inhabitants - Ep41
01:06:34
Bread. You love it. We love it. Some of us have been baking it. In Episode 41 you'll find out who the master bakers are and who puts the "ass" in "fougasse". If bread isn't your thing, maybe hard sci-fi is? If so, there's a breakdown of The Expanse and why the Netflix show is basically Babylon 5 for the noughties. Oddworld: Soulstorm is a big topic too, on account of our special guest knowing a thing or two about the upcoming game. It's sounding absolutely fascinating, especially for long-time fans of the series. We also talk about launching video games in today's market, which might be of interest, but if it's not don't worry, because pretty soon we also get on to talking about the fake obituary for Sean Connery one of us had to put together, plus whether or not a baby actually knows the difference between Shrek 1 and Shrek 2. And yes okay there's more golf chat in this episode and, spoilers, there's probably going to be some golf chat in the next episode too, but this time it's a three-way battle between Everybody's Golf, Golf Story, and FIFA 17's The Journey mode... it makes sense on the show, trust us. So join the usual group of Kris (@DigitalStrider), Sam (@MrSamTurner), and Peter (@XeroXeroXero), plus ultra lovely special guest Peter Chapman (@ColossalBlue) from Oddworld Inhabitants, for strong tea and light-to-medium geek bants. As always, if you feel like you want to help us out, do leave a review on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, or wherever you downloaded this episode, as it really is the best way to tell other people about the show. Whitehall Mystery, Oxenfree, and Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms - Ep40
01:07:14
Where else are you going to hear all about Jamaica: The Crew, Cheap Golf, Little Mix, and how one of the hosts got trapped in their swimming costume in a single podcast? Nowhere, that's where. Then of course there's lots of chat about devious hidden movement game Whitehall Mystery, the sheer joy of true crime (podcasts), two more forms of golf than the one previously just mentioned, and the addictive Dungeons & Dragons clicker Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms. There's also holiday plans, fun with spreadsheets, and the very special delight that is Oxenfree, as Kris (@DigitalStrider), Lisa (@Lisa7989), and Peter (@XeroXeroXero) have the lovely chat with tea that is Episode 40 of Staying In. And hey, do you like our little podcast? If you want to help us out, leave a review on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, or wherever you downloaded this episode. Everybody's Golf, Eight-Minute Empire, and Zoo Ball - Ep39
01:08:59
It's perhaps the most exhausting episode ever, as Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Sam (@MrSamTurner), and Peter (@XeroXeroXero) strap on some wristbands, limber up, and take our places on the starting grid for lots of chat about sports. We discuss why Frubes may not be the best mid-workout drink, all the while tackling The Great King Size Chocolate Bar Conspiracy. We find out why one of us has been watching Nick Faldo sink shots at Pebble Beach while in the company of Gary Sparrow, and who's been substituting their shin pads for copies of The Guardian. We also discuss why Everybody's Golf is a Nintendo game in disguise, how Zoo Ball captures the essence of great sporting events, and how it's not actually possible to overdose on squash (the drink, not the sport). Just in-case you thought we'd lost all our nerd credentials with all this talk of sport and such, we also manage to get in a fair bit of chat about the board game and digital edition of Eight-Minute Empire, and enthuse about The Adventure Zone from Maximum Fun. And stick around for the end of this episode for a very special announcement... For links to topics covered - http://stayingin.podbean.com Find us on Twitter - https://twitter.com/StayingInPod |

Sonic Mania, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, and four men and a baby - Ep38
01:09:06
From surprise engagements and having babies, to picking fantasy football squads and choosing the right shower gel, this episode of the podcast covers some of life's most important decisions. But we also can't resist talking, as usual, about the nerd stuff that has been keeping us busy recently. Dan (@ThisDanFrost) explains why Sonic Mania is the best game the SEGA mascot has been in in ages, Kris (@DigitalStrider) walks us through Playdead's Limbo spiritual sequel Inside, and Peter (@XeroXeroXero) talks about Naughty Dog's Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and why Chloe feeling more "real" is a good thing for the medium. Sam (@MrSamTurner) has been far too busy in command of a vessel for games and such. SummerSlam, Dunkirk, and Simon Miller from WhatCulture and The Miller Report - Ep37
01:07:46
We've not talked about wrestling since Episode 4, so we thought it high time to return to the topic, and this time we've brought in Simon Miller (@SimonMiller316) to provide expert insight into the world of WWE. With Dan (@ThisDanFrost) in Simon's corner you've basically got the ultimate tag team for insight into SummerSlam, the business behind the brawling, and the ludicrous high prices of wrestling gear. After that, Sam (@MrSamTurner) and Kris (@DigitalStrider) talk Dunkirk and explain why you have to see it in IMAX to do it justice, then there's a slightly less solemn, but still ever-so serious bit where Peter (@XeroXeroXero) makes a heartfelt apology to a game developer. If that weren't enough, there's also ab chat, we explain why Captain Sonar should be on your radar, the board game Luchador! Mexican Wrestling Dice, a report on Memoir '44, an absolutely gigantic spider, and one utterly amazing Jewish wedding. A huge thanks to Simon for appearing on the show. If you're not already, you should definitely be watching The Miller Report, as well as his wrestling work with WhatCulture Wrestling, and consider supporting him on Patreon too. 01:00:45
Kris (@DigitalStrider) and Peter (@XeroXeroXero) helm Episode 36 of Staying In, as they talk about ground-breaking walking simulators, brand new mobile games, cutting edge cinema, and farming tools from the Iron Age. We've been making our first tentative steps into Albion Online the MMO from Sandbox Interactive, finding out what remains of Edith Finch in What Remains of Edith Finch, and discovering that we are simply not good enough at games to beat Miles & Kilo. Plus lots of chat about Baby Driver, imagining what Driver Baby might look like, and examining the scarily familiar world of The Circle. Did you know we have a Steam Curator page? You do now! War of the Ring, Dread, and Country Dancing - Ep35
50:35
It's the first ever completely "in-person" recording of the podcast, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Sam (@MrSamTurner), and Peter (@XeroXeroXero) gathered round a table to speak into microphones about games we've been playing over a weekend together. We've been faffing about with a Ricoh Theta S, so we discuss the practical merits of 360 images and video, as well as how that medium might translate into a horror movie. It's not all high technology chat, as we talk about our experiences with the massive Lord of the Rings tabletop game War of the Ring, we walk through our most recent RPG tale of the fantastic Dread, and argue that Dark Stories is the best worst game. We've also been playing a lot of the Ticket to Ride app while in different parts of the UK, which we contrast with our time with Ticket to Ride Europe which we also played that weekend. As if that weren't enough, there's details of a trip to Greece, the worrying song lyrics found in Grease, Greek country line dancing, and a new contender for best crisp (also from Greece). And hey, we played oh so many more games over the weekend than we got to talk about, but we snapped loads of photos of them using the camera and uploaded them to Twitter. Pop on over to @StayingInPod to see images of Oh My Goods!, Colt Express, Ticket to Ride Europe, Flick 'Em Up, Captain Sonar, and Star Realms. You can even find moments of us recording and setting up, plus if you pop on over to our YouTube channel you can watch an unedited 360 video clip from the recording. Wonder Woman, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One X, and deconstructing sheds - Ep34
53:39
It's a matter of life and death and sheds for Sam (@MrSamTurner), and a matter of taste for Peter (@XeroXeroXero) and his Rainbow Drops, in our 34th episode. It's also a matter of fact that Kris (@DigitalStrider) thinks Wonder Woman is the best DC movie in years, and Dan (@ThisDanFrost) not wanting a Nintendo Switch after E3's game reveals should probably be a matter for the authorities. There's heated debate over the merits of the Xbox One X and gold-plated HDMI cables, before cooling off with some cucumber water... or was it a lime...? Plus one of us has gone all retro and purchased themselves a lovely new copy of Shenmue for the Dreamcast. And for anyone affected by the issues raised in our discussion of RAS Syndrome, feel free to GTFO out. Finally, a big congratulations to the winners of our Steam game competition that ran throughout June - winners have now been contacted via e-mail. Onirim, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and The Sniffer - Ep33
01:00:19
We finally get round to talking about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as a group, as Dan (@ThisDanFrost) leads a nice chat about why we enjoyed it so much and how it's a breath of fresh air. Kris (@DigitalStrider) and Peter (@XeroXeroXero) have both been playing even more Star Realms, which is impressive considering they've been sinking a load of time into two other games too: namely Onirim and Yakuza 0. We touch upon a lovely little game called Spot It!, get pleasantly disoriented by Inherent Vice, discuss the sensational TV show The Sniffer (while writing our own version, but with doggos), confuse a man from a Tesco, and delve deeper into the pub crisp mythos. Quick reminder! We have a competition we're running that finishes at the very end of July, so make sure to get your entry in quick if you're planning on doing so. 58:37
Who loves all things Gloom? Lisa Mart does! Find out why as she joins Sam (@MrSamTurner), Kris (@DigitalStrider), and Peter (@XeroXeroXero) to talk about everything games and geekery: from how Arkham Horror: The Card Game is the perfect way to prepare for a half marathon, to why Peter's stressing out with the responsibility of car ownership in Jalopy. There's also the end of Pandemic Legacy: Season 1, a delicious bit of New York Slice, graphic novel organising, and sorting a music collection by the weather. Plus old fashioned sweets, more phonics than you care to mention, the true hierarchy of crisps, and Portuguese tea. And as we mention at the top of the show, we have a competition we're running through June, so give the podcast a listen for how to enter for your chance to win some awesome games on Steam! Star Realms, No Man's Sky, and Doctor Who - Ep31
01:12:10
Like everyone else at the moment, we're talking about American Gods in this episode, celebrating the return of "appointment to view" television with Neil Gaiman's wonderful new work. There's also chat about how TV can be accessible to new audiences by following the examples of "adventure of the week" stories such as those found in Red Dwarf and Doctor Who. Sam (@MrSamTurner) and Kris (@DigitalStrider) both get to talking about Batman: The Telltale Series as well as Breakfast Games™, while Peter (@XeroXeroXero) goes through the minefield of social mores that is lending video games to your friends. Plus we take to the stars, as Kris explains why him and his partner are regularly dipping into No Man's Sky, and Peter and Sam have a galactic-sized discussion about Star Realms and why it's so stellar. In the show we mention that we think you'll really like We're Not Wizards, so if you fancy giving it a listen then do try the episodes that Sam and Peter have appeared on. Sam (@MrSamTurner) and Kris (@DigitalStrider) recount their journey through an actual real life plague town to Alix (@EruditeWolf) and Peter (@XeroXeroXero), as well as touching upon a host of new board games. Then one of us learns a valuable lesson on how to talk to children, and Dan (@ThisDanFrost) receives some top advice about his life-changing news. Arkham Horror: The Card Game, Sugar & Dice, and Crowtel Renovations - Ep29
56:18
It's Sam (@MrSamTurner) and Peter (@XeroXeroXero) hosting Episode 29 of the show so - shock! horror! - there's plenty of chat about intricate card games and curious indie video games. The pair discuss their first impressions of Fantasy Flight's excellent RPG and LCG hybrid Arkham Horror: The Card Game, examining how it avoids ludonarrative dissonance through smart use of H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos. Sam's visited Sugar & Dice, a superb board game cafe in Liverpool. This then makes for a good excuse to talk about why venues like this are so positive for fans of dice and meeples. Meanwhile, Peter's been playing Crowtel Renovations from SinksAdventure, in which you guide a hotel owner (that is a crow) through multiple stages of strikingly thoughtful platforming. If that weren't enough, there's also chat about hot new multiplayer video game Borderlands 2 from 2K Games and Gearbox Software on PS4, the correct pronounciation of David Guetta, a growing obsession in Forensic Files and a totally real person called Cindy Pancake. As noted in the intro, if you'd like to vote for us in the British Podcast Awards (which is super quick and easy to do) then head to britishpodcastawards.com/vote to do exactly that. Obama Llama, Marrying Mr. Darcy, Go Cuckoo, and a geeky day of games in Bristol - Ep28
01:00:33
It's a bit of a Bristol special this episode, as Alix Briskham (@EruditeWolf), Kris Darby (@DigitalStrider), and Peter Willington (@XeroXeroXero) talk about their ultra geeky day out in the South West. They take in all the best geek haunts in the city, including Excelsior, 8Bit Planet, Forbidden Planet, and Chance & Counters. Naturally, tons of board games got played, including Go Cuckoo!, Marrying Mr. Darcy, Sheriff of Nottingham, Obama Llama, Escape from the Aliens in Outer Space, and Mysterium. Plus there's talk about ghosts, the best cartoon food, and the importance of a good breakfast - which apparently shouldn't include a "non-newtonian version of bacon". By the way, if you like what we're upto and think we should get a shiny award for it, then we'd love for you to vote for us in the British Podcast Awards. You've got until 28th April to lend us your support, by visiting - https://www.britishpodcastawards.com/vote Finally: a quick apology to anyone who got spammed by our podcast feed over the last few days.
