Armin Briegel’s 2019 Outlook

Tycho was the loveliest of humans. He was kind, he was the most giving person I’ve ever met, and he set new standards for what it means to be a host. I try to emulate so much of his attributes, but continue to come up short. Even though we’ve known about his health issues for years, and specifically that he had announced he wouldn’t be involved in MacSysAdmin as the “dictator” any more, I am as devastated about this as I’ve been about anyone I’ve lost in my adult life. My heart goes out to Patrick, Anna, and all of his family and circle of friends. We’ve all lost a great friend and may we keep him with us always.

Donate to 350.org in his honor.

LINKS & NOTES

No notes this week, just a heartfelt thank you. Each and every person reading this note: we thank you. When we started this on a lark, we had no idea what it would grow to become. More than 100 episodes have passed since then, and you’ve stayed with us, you’ve told friends and colleagues, you’ve written us letters and hit us up on Slack or at conferences, and we’re incredibly grateful to you for helping to make this into an awesome thing we all enjoy.

As you gather with your families and friends this American Thanksgiving, know that we’re thankful for each and every one of you.

Tom retires Munki-in-a-Box

Tom’s Eulogy for macOS Server:
Friends, Mac Admins, countrymen, lend me your ears.
I come to bury Server, not to praise him.
The evil that people do lives after them;
The good is oft interrèd with their bones.
So let it be with Server. The noble Mac Admin
Hath told you Server was ambitious.
If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
And grievously hath Server answered it.
Here, under leave of Server and the rest—
For the Mac Admin is an honorable person;
So are they all, all honorable people—
Come I to speak in Server’s funeral.
Server was my friend, faithful and just to me.
I speak not to disprove what some Mac Admin spoke,
But here I am to speak what I do know.
You all did love them once, not without cause:
What cause withholds you then, to mourn for them?

  • The world is moving past the Mac whether iOS is ready or not.
  • iPad urgently needs to accommodate some proportion of “pro” users
  • Article notes that 70% of the Mac user base rarely/never touch a “pro app”.
  • These people should be on iOS already.

Theft & Loss Recovery for iOS Users

  • Encrypted iCloud Backups after iOS 10 are awesome.
  • Lost Mode for MDM-capable devices is great (as long as they have cellular or know a lot of Wi-Fi networks)
  • Building a trusted system requires that you need not just one great password, but a couple good ones.
  • (I always know my Apple ID password, login password, and 2FA Backup passwords, the rest I leave to Keychain)
  • Can a password-less future get here soon enough?
