A slightly tipsy exploration of the hit STARZ series Outlander.

Episode Date
Episode 75 - Dudelander Season 4 Part Two!

Hey y'all -

Here it is, our unintentional part two, our realization that we needed a part two, and a long, long conversation about man-in-bear-suit. The photo above will be addressed.

We've got an Anyway, Patty coming for you this weekend, too!

Last thing: Will you be at C2E2? If so, give us a shout—Allison will be there for work and would love to say hi.

Lots of love,

Julie, Allison, Janine, Kevin, and Neal

Episode 74 - Dudelander Season 4 Part One!
Hey y'all,
Without further adieu, Dudelander. It's a doozy. (Dudezy? We're workshopping it.)
Okay, a little further adieu. We were going to keep this at one episode, but you know how things go. Look for part two next week. And in the meantime, please let us know what you want from your Droughtlander season!
Lots of love,
Julie, Allison, and an absent Janine

Episode 73 - Outlander Season 4 Wrap-Up LIVE SHOW!

Featuring a Shyamalan-level twist concerning one of the longest-running jokes on the Drunkcast. We love y'all, enjoy!

Episode 72 - Outlander S4 E13, "Man of Worth"

Hey y'all,

Greetings from the other side of our last (mostly) sober 'cast, for now anyway. We assume you're eager to hear our thoughts on a certain development, so the preamble ends here.

Well, actually, it ends after this: Please join us this Saturday (2/2) at The Oasis (6809 N Sheridan Road, Chicago) at 12 p.m. for our annual season wrap-up live show. It's our special bar and we can't wait to share its divey pleasures with you.

Lots of love,

Julie, Allison, and Janine

Episode 71 - Outlander S4 E12, "Providence"

Hey y'all,

Give or take one Adagio for Strings, this one was a winner—particularly when one biscuit-loving Scot was on screen. Yes, Roger. You can have all the biscuits, ye ehjdiot.

We also rhapsodize about the costumes, go on several extremely slap-happy tangents, and announce our season wrap-up LIVE SHOW, at the Oasis (6809 N Sheridan Rd) in Chicago. Show starts at noon. It is, alas, 21+, unless you're a tiny baby brought in by an adult parent. We're really excited about this. The O is our Cheers.

Lots of love,

Three ehjdiots (Julie, Allison, and Janine)

Episode 70 - Outlander S4 E11, "If Not for Hope"
Hey y'all,
Hope hope hope hopey hope hope hope, hope hope bird bunny bee hope hope credits deer hope. Hope hope hope Coinface hope, Tom Bombadil hope hope hopety hope. Hope.
Hope-y birthday, Julie!

Episode 69 - Outlander S4 E10, "The Deep Heart's Core"
Hey y'all,
We sat ourselves down, did some nice, refreshing face masks, and watched the fine folks of Outlander lay the groundwork for the rest of the season. Our skin is supple, and our minds were sharp.
Why sharp?
Because this is Podlander Sobercast: an Outlander Podcast.
Fear not, we'll be back on the sauce soon, but this is the only episode we've ever done for which all three of us were stone-cold sober. Oh my god, what if we weren't funny?
Lots of love,
Julie, Allison, and Janine
Jan 09, 2019
Episode 68 - Outlander S4 E9, "The Birds & The Bees"
But what about the bunnies, we ask? What about the bunnies?
We had a lot of fun with this one, y'all, but we must warn you that Allison made cocktails without measuring. Because a) they were delicious and b) they were secretly strong but whoops no measuring, she got us all pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty drunk.
So, it's sloppy, is what we're saying. Listen on for our thoughts on the week's clear winner of the Platinum Pamplemousse, some chat about poor old Roger and certain narrative misunderstandings, the parts of last week's episode that we missed, and more.
Happy New Year! Y'all are the best, and we couldn't do it without you.
Lots of love,
Julie, Allison, and Janine
PS - We die in a fire?!

Episode 67 - Outlander S4 E8, "Wilmington"
Hey y'all,
We tried, we really did, to get you a full episode before the holidays. As you will hear in the following 27 minutes, our efforts were in vain. We'll be doing an xtreme xtra xlong xpisode next week, encompassing about half of "Wilmington" and all of whatever comes next, but for now, here are your favorite drunks, trying and failing to record from three different locations, one of which is roller coaster adjacent.
Lots of love,
Julie, Allison, and Janine
Dec 25, 2018
Episode 66 - Outlander S4 E7, "Down the Rabbit Hole"
Hey gang,
It's the last 'cast we're recording in the same space before the holiday break, so we dug into a box of the wonderful Kate Kulzick's Christmas cookies and enjoyed the hell out of ourselves. Listen on for our thoughts on Sophie Skelton's evolving American accent, the return of a certain expert jactor, and looooads of #intheboooooks.
We'll be back next week!
Lots of love,
Julie, Allison, and Janine
Dec 19, 2018
Episode 65 - Outlander S4 E6, "Blood of My Blood"
Coinface returns!
What else do you want? Allison and Julie, sadly sans Janine once more, love love love them some Coinface. Sure, there are some mixed feelings about the outerwear choices of Master Willie Leechington-Bangs, and we both groaned out load at a certain line of dialogue, but David Berry and Duncan Lacroix had a scene together, so how much can we really complain?
Lots of love,
Julie, Allison, and Janine
Dec 13, 2018
Episode 64 - Outlander S4 E5, "Savages"

Some good stuff here, in our humble opinion! Solid #intheboooooks talk, a lovely little side tangent about how some dudes just can't put the fuckin' toilet paper on the holder, a part where the batteries on the recorder die and we have to stop and buy new ones, lots of Sofie, you get the idea. But yeah yeah who cares because....

We don't want to spoil it for you, but we are very excited about a certain head of silver hair (seriously, it's a great wig) and the fabulous acting happening on and around that head. And the rest of the episode? Pretty great, too.

Lots of love,

Julie, Allison, and Janine

Dec 05, 2018
Episode 63 - Outlander S4 E4, "Common Ground"

Okay, y'all. Have fun. Bonus: Listen for when Sofie has a nightmare while we're recording and Julie has to go wake her up. It was distressing, but not as distressing as some other things.

Lots of love,

Allison, Julie, and Janine

Nov 28, 2018
Episode 62 - Outlander S4 E3, "The False Bride"

Happy Thanksgiving, nerds!

Listen on for our thoughts on Roger's heel turn, Sophie Skelton's much-improved accent, Claire's thing for skulls, the footwear choices of ghosts, and loads of in-the-boooooooks.

Have a great holiday, we'll be back with the next episode (already in the can!) before you know it.

Nov 22, 2018
Episode 61 - Outlander S4 E2, "Do No Harm"

Fill your mugs and drink deep, friends, because this is a rough one.

Julie and Allison were on their own this week, but even without Janine's gentle guidance/reminders to stay on task, we'd have had some trouble. That was an upsetting hour with a few great performances and one blessed, very silly skunk attack.

Not sure what else to say, really. If we end up talking out of our asses, please call us on it—especially if you're a POC. Allison's on Twitter, Julie's on Facebook, and you can reach us both here.

Lots of love,

Julie, Allison, and Janine

Episode 60 - Outlander S4 E1, "America The Beautiful"

NOTE: Now the correct audio file. Thanks to everyone who let us know about the error!

It's back!

This is a bit of an odd episode, because we did the last bit at Rogers Park Social, where we watched the premiere live with a bunch of you (Hi all! Thanks for coming.) But in many respects, it's business as usual. Nicknames. Swearing. A very good dog. (That part's new.)

We've got a backlog of episodes to release—life got crazy, in good ways and bad, for all of us—so please forgive us if all of a sudden we're talking about stuff that happened in June. This, though, is in very good time.

Our new release schedule, if that's your bag, is as follows:

Patreon - Monday

Everywhere else - Wednesday

Bonus/Backlog - Kinda random times?

More to come soon!

Episode 59 - Live from C2E2!

In March, we played a weird game. It happened to be in a room full of people at one of the best conventions in the world. This is what happened. Enjoy.

Ep. 58 - Season 4 Trailer Reactions, DNA, and Tampons

So this is an odd one, friends.

The first half: us tracking down and reacting to the teaser for the fourth season of Outlander.

The second half: a "spoiler section" that quickly devolves into a conversation about DNA and then about tampons. You can skip ahead to 28:30 if you don't want to hear spoilers (well, there are still some very mild ones) but do want to hear us jaw for half an hour.

Important note: this was recorded before news broke that the Golden State Killer may have been identified thanks to DNA/Ancestry websites.

Lots of love,

Allison, Julie, and Janine

Episode 57 - Dudelander, Season 3!

It's here! It's Dudelander!

For those new to the fun and games, our seasonal Dudelander episodes feature Neal (Julie's husband) and Kevin (Allison's arch-enemy who is actually just her friend), two gentlemen who watch Outlander with varying degrees of enthusiasm. Usually, they're pleasantly surprised by some things and not by others; this time around, we're all pretty frustrated so the vibe is different.

They're funny, and we got them wasted, and also we recorded this on NEW YEARS EVE, so don't be confused when we start singing Auld Lang Syne.

Working through this backlog. We love you.

Kisses and Cherry Bounce,

Allison, Julie, and Janine

Episode 56 - S3 Wrapup LIVE at Empirical Brewery!

For this episode, we were live. We did it live. Live at Empirical Brewery, we gave out our traditional end of season awards, and we did so live and in person. Live. It was in December. We're catching up on the backlog, we promise. So... happy holidays?

We also got to see so many of you! It was wonderful. We especially want to thank Megan and Tori, who brought waffles as per tradition, the wonderful Wisconsin contingent — and in particular Chantel, who brought us hats she knitted which are so warm and comfy, everyone who brought  friends with them, and Jennlander Drunklynn, who came in from California (for reasons besides us, but still). It made us so happy and we were so touched.

Here we go! Love to you all.

Lots of smooches,

Allison, Julie, and Janine

Episode 55 - We're Back (We Promise ) - C2E2 and More

Hey y'all,

We got busy in weird, stressful ways, but we're back! We promise. Contained herein you'll find information about our live show at C2E2 this weekend, our thoughts on Tobias Menzies' new gig, where the hell we've been since December, some jokes about our collapsing emotional states, and all kinds of other stuff. We'll be back NEXT WEEK with new episodes and we promise not to disappear again.

Lots of love,

Allison, Julie and Janine

Episode 54 - Outlander S3E13, "Eye of the Storm"

We did not like when. You've been warned.

Seriously, we know a lot of you listen to the show because we're enthusiastic, but enthusiasm isn't always warranted. Don't worry, there are still plenty of positives — we love Coinface always forever — but we were not super pleased with this one.

If you're looking for a warm, fuzzy finale lovefest, join us Sunday LIVE at Empirical Brewery in Chicago!

Thanks to all of you for your support. Means the world, honestly.

Lots of love and quite a few Hamilton references,

Allison, Julie, and Janine

Episode 53 - Outlander S3E12, "The Bakra"

Hey, please read this note.

Julie and I (Allison) screwed up. This is a funny episode, we think — god, we hope so — and we had not one but TWO amazing guests, and we got to talk about Lotte Verbeek a lot, so, win. But we were vaguely dissatisfied with the show's handling of slavery, and talked about it as such, wrapped the episode, and went home happy. Then we woke up the next morning, thought about it some more, and realized that yeah, we screwed up.

The thing about white privilege is that it's based on the idea that white people are always centered in the narrative, and you can be "woke" and still be totally ignorant of the constant, insidious ways that society and culture sideline people of color in favor of whiteness, even in stories about people of color. So we sat our white asses down, accepted that somehow this story was about how Claire felt about buying a slave, thought for about five minutes afterward, and totally failed you all  — both of us as people failed, and I in particular as a critic failed. And so I'll say quickly here what we ignorantly and damagingly didn't say then: Outlander failed, too, and they failed hard.

No modifications to this episode, no additions. Just two white women who think they've got it figured out proving how far they have to go.

We're sorry. If you're a person of color, we're especially sorry. If you have any thoughts you want to share — about the show, about our handling of it, about anything – please send them to podlanderdrunkcast@gmail.com, or reach out on Twitter, or whatever you like. If you want to come on the show, we'll shut our foolish mouths and let you speak. And if we lose you here, well, we can't blame you.

So here it is, and a special thanks to guests Ruth McCormack and Catie Kirschner, as well as to Helena, who came to visit us just beforehand, and to Molly Mullen, who provided some truly delicious Colorado beers.

And last, here are some great pieces of writing from women who didn't totally fuck this one up:

Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya at The AV Club

Jonita Davis at Black Girl Nerds

Kayti Burke at Den of Geeks

If you know of others, please share them below. We'll update this post and share on Twitter. And this post is and will remain public.

So, um.... enjoy the episode?

Allison, Julie, and Janine (and Catie and Ruth!)

Episode 52 - Outlander S3E11, "Uncharted"

Hi gang! We recorded a little late this week, but friend of the show Jen Moniz filled in for Allison and is brilliant, so there's an upside! Listen on for an unexpected impression and for Julie not firing Allison, because she's a bigger person than that.

Lots of love,

Allison, Julie, Janine - and Jen!

Dec 01, 2017
Episode 51 - Outlander S3E10, "Heaven and Earth"

Special guest Kate Kulzick (The Televerse) joins us to talk about ship lingo, splat sounds, actual violinists, and poor dead Albie, who gets a solid nickname after many drafts. We aimed for 60 minutes, so naturally it's two hours long.

Happy Thanksgiving from Allison, Julie, and Janine, who are very sorry that you had to deal with Jamie being such a dick this week.

Ep 50 - Outlander S3E9, "The Doldrums"
So this episode is kind of... the doldrums, no? Still, there's plenty to get excited about, including a killer performance from Gary Young as Yi Tien Cho, some world-class eye-rolling from Marsali, and a rash of Kebbie Lebbie-related humor. Oh, and one other thing: it's our 50th episode!
Stay tuned for more this week, specifically for Patreon subscribers.

Ep. 49 - Outlander S3E8, "First Wife"

We sing The Association, make do without Janine (we promise it sounds good even though Janine was on the lam this week and also he edited it so it's OK), and sing the praises of our very special guest, Keenan.

Oh, and we spend a lot of time talking about that little Jamie-lookin' motherfucker (who is very good and probably an extremely nice young lady.) If you like Keenan here, just wait — there's a bonus episode with her coming out later in the week for Patreon supporters at the $5 level and up. For everyone else, it'll be out after the Outlander season ends.

Ep. 48 - Outlander S3E7, "Creme de Menthe"

Sorry, sorry, we meant #StartingAgain.

We had mixed feelings on this one (more mixed since that glorious glow of Hot Fergus faded) but had a hell of a lot of fun talking about it. We also, by complete coincidence, were drinking the most perfect beer in the history of beers for this one.

As always, thanks so much for your support, for listening, and for sending us such wonderful GIFs on Twitter—and a special shoutout to you, Daphne the Starz intern.

Lots of love,

Allison, Julie and Janine

Nov 02, 2017
Ep. 47 - Outlander S3E6, "A. Malcolm"

Well, our livestream had more than a few technical difficulties, and we got Janine hammered, and maybe Cherry Bounce was a bad idea... but Lord, you gave us a rare episode, and we loved it well.

Listen on for our thoughts on Young Ian, Hot Fergus, and Blessedly Inoffensive Mr. Willoughby, as well as our sheer joy at once again experiencing the full Cornish Game Hen.

Other highlights: Allison forgot about a major book thing! Janine talks about loneliness! We all hit our elbows on the table a bunch!

Allison, Julie, and Janine

Oct 27, 2017
Ep. 46 - Outlander S3 Grab Bag!

Oh, my dears. We answered a bunch of questions you had, and mostly told the truth. We drank a lot, as you would expect. We (Allison) forgot to include Dr. Rawlings' journals in the list of book stories she wants to see. We all forgot to keep our elbows off the table and as a result this is a *loud* episode.

Regardless, we had fun shooting the shit with our special guest Jen Moniz, and hopefully this'll tide you over until Sunday.

ON THAT NOTE: We are working on a setup that will allow us to livestream our viewing (with Janine!) of this week's exxxxxtra long episode. Keep your eyes peeled. He's gonna blush so much.

Allison, Julie, and Janine

Oct 19, 2017
Ep. 45 - Outlander S3E5, "Freedom & Whisky"

You're not even really reading this, because OH MY GOD PRINT SHOP AND OH MY GOD HUMAN TURTLENECK.

Just in case you are reading this, we—obviously—loved this one, particularly those last perfect minutes. We also love Joe (more Joe, please) and Wee Roger and are encouraged to see Miss Sophie, erm, improving. And that accent's better!

But come on, this is all about that ending. Trust me, that's mostly what we talk about. Well, that and the glassware, because JFC, that is some great glassware.

Other notes: If you've got questions you want answered or topics you want covered, next week we're doing a grab bag episode! Hit us up here, or on Twitter, or wherever.

We love ya, ye ken--

Allison, Julie, and Janine

Oct 10, 2017
Ep. 44 - Outlander S3E4, "Of Lost Things"

We had mixed feelings about this episode, though our feelings about Coinface are pure and true. We also go on a verra long tangent or two, finally figure out Janine's catchphrase (thanks, Kathryn!), and figure out which Bennett sister Isobel is.

Thanks for listening — and if you've got a moment, please leave us a review! It really does help.

We made it through this whole description without mentioning Geneva. You're welcome.

Oct 04, 2017
Ep. 43 - Outlander S3E3, "All Debts Paid"

We are verra bereft.

Allison and Julie had mixed feelings about this episode, and not just because we're now going to have to live without the world's best jactor (that's jaw-actor, for those new to the fun and games). But we take some solace in the incredibly promising new cast member on the scene, and in the fact that Sam was *great* this week.

But most importantly... PAMPLEMOUSSE LIVES.

Sep 26, 2017
Ep. 42 - Outlander S3E2, "Surrender"

The third season of Outlander marches on with some questionable follicular choices and one extremely cute baby. Most importantly, we bid farewell to Credits Deer, that ungrateful bastard.

Sep 19, 2017
Ep. 41 - Outlander S3E1, "The Battle Joined"

The Outlander Droughtlander (ugh) is finally over, which means Allison, Julie, and Janine are all going to experience liver failure. Make sure to pop on over to Twitter (@podlandercast) and vote in our very very important poll. Viva Les Frasers and Outlander Season 3!

Nov 09, 2016
Ep. 23: Outlander S1 Rewatch, 1.6 - "The Garrison Commander"

Allison and Julie are joined again this week by our pal Amelia Buzzell, who was, like us, disappointed that there wasn't more Ned Gowan in this episode. Instead, it's the Tobias Muhzmenzsz show, and while this one probably won't end up on your list of favorite episodes any time soon, he's very good at his job, which is acting.

Thanks for joining us, Amelia! And cheers for not putting the claret at risk.

Enjoy! Well, as much as you can, what with the flogging.

Nov 02, 2016
Ep. 22: Outlander S1 Rewatch, 1.5 - "Rent"

Claire's hitting the road in a fetching fur-cuffed jacket, ready to help Dougal and his merry men (notably the amazing lawyer Ned Gowan) collect rent. You know what that means?

instead of the usual shit.

First shot Julie,

who is really pissed that we're making so many musical jokes!

Ah, I give up. Anyway, we spend a lot of time rhapsodizing about Ned Gowan, too much time making musical theatre jokes, and the whole time basking in the glorious presence of special guest Amelia Buzzell, a Chicago-based writer and performerr who also bakes delicious things. She also brought along a visual reference, which you'll want when you listen. Enjoy!

We'll see you next week. As always, you can follow us on Facebook,Twitter, and Patreon. Thanks for listening!

Oct 19, 2016
Ep. 21: Outlander S1 Rewatch, 1.4- "The Gathering

The last few episodes of Outlander have spent lots of time talking about a Gathering. Did you catch it? Maybe? Once or twice? Maybe you created your own Gathering drinking game? We bet Claire did.

Anyway, the big event arrives at last, and many interesting things happen, but come on:

We're back to steady Tuesday releases, so we'll see you next week. As always, you can follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Patreon. Thanks for listening!

Oct 11, 2016
Ep. 20: Outlander S1 Rewatch, 1.3 - "The Way Out"

Allison has recovered from having one ear nailed to the pillory* and the Outlander season one train is a-rollin' once more. She really thinks she ought to have toughed it out, but we can't all be Claire now, can we?

* being a wimp with a very bad cold

Expect lots of talk about outerwear, the seductive powers of Geillis Duncan, and how awesome Murtagh is (as per usual). Also something to expect: our S1E4 episode (a.k.a. "The Gathering") TOMORROW.

As always, you can follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Patreon. Thanks for listening!

Oct 06, 2016
Ep. 19: Outlander S1 Rewatch, 1.2 - "Castle Leoch"

Our rewatch of Outlander season one continues with the episode where they spend a huge amount of time taking about what's going to happen in the next episode. It's annoying but who cares because ASKtsz'DJASKLDJASKLoJDAKLS]JD Geillis.

Lotte Verbeek, we love you.

As always, if you dig the show, please consider writing us a review somewhere, subscribing on iTunes, following us on one of our various social media handles, or backing us on Patreon. And no matter what, thanks for listening — you lot are a bit of all right, you know?

Episode 18: Outlander S1 Re-Watch, "Sassenach"

Well, here it is! The first episode of our Outlander season one coverage. It just so happens that it's also the first episode we've done hungover, which is fitting, as Claire spends so much of season one hungover herself.

A few things are different this time around. We're including a tiny spoiler section at the end of each episode, so if anyone's watching Outlander for the first time they can remain relatively unspoiled. (That said, we're only human, so something may slip past us every once in awhile.) Also, we're now releasing our content every Wednesday, unless you're a supporter on Patreon, in which case you'll get access to that sweet sweet episode a day early. Patreon patrons also get bonus content from time to time. Right now, it's access to our live show at Wizard World Chicago. The audio quality's bunk, but the jokes are on point.

We'd love to know your thoughts if you're revisiting season one as well! Find us on Twitter or Facebook and share your thoughts, especially if they're filthy.

In your face, Droughtlander!
