The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

On November 10, 1975 one of the best known maritime tragedies in modern history occurred on Lake Superior when the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank during a strong storm. Because I (Nina) have such an emotional reaction to this story, this week's episode was written by Gemma Harris, audio editing by Chaesare Gray.

This incident was immortalized in song, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald was written, composed and performed by Gordon Lightfoot, who is out on tour again this year.

The story of the Fitz is also taught in some grade school Michigan history classes.

While the podcast gives a history of the ship and details of her last days, there is far more to the lives and stories of these fathers, sons, brothers, husbands and their families. If you’d like to know more, I encourage you to explore the individual stories of the Fitzgerald’s crew, you will find a list of crew members, as well as extensive resources at our website

95 Paulson Family Murder

Possibly the most disturbing episode of the show to date. In March of 1982 41 year old Maris “Marty” Karklins entered the Paulson home on a Saturday afternoon. When he left, all five members of the family, Bob, Mary Jane and their three children, Cyndi, Carla and Casey were dead and the house would burn to the ground. A tragedy that rocked their family and the small, western Michigan town they called home.

Karklins would not be captured until July of 1982 when he fatally shot his mother, Milda Karklins in her Grand Rapids home.

37 The Oakland County Child Killer Part 2

This is the second episode in a series about the Oakland County Child Killer.

Between 1976 and 1977 four children were abducted and murdered. Mark Stebbins, Jill Robinson, Kristine Mihelich and Timothy King. They were held from 3.5 – 19 days. Their deaths were considered the work of a killer or perhaps a team of killers working together.

Forty years later and law enforcement is no closer to closing the case. We look at the victims, the crimes, the investigators and the families left behind.
