Ep. 311 - Julie Nguyen on Healing Dis-ease With Food
58:33

CATCH UP WITH K + L

Even though the state of the world is uneasy right now, people are supporting people in such a beautiful way — and K+L want to celebrate that! Remember, all of the things that are happening in the world right now will pass as we step into our light. If you need some support in these times, you can find a community of super supportive women in the secret Almost 30 Facebook groups.

THE INTERVIEW

Julie Nguyen lived the first 30 years of her life believing that her health problems were chronic and incurable. When she realized that changing her diet improved her mood, her eczema, her weight, and her happiness, she had to share that life-changing info with others. But she ran into a roadblock: healthy food has a branding problem, and the bland food churned out by the ‘health food’ industry isn’t doing anything to help it. Julie devoted her life to making healthy, tasty food and nutrition education more accessible through Methodology, an innovative company that delivers fresh, chef-curated food to your door. Not all heroes wear capes, and not all medicine comes in capsules.

If you’d like to try Methodology, K + L have a promo code. Visit gomethodology.com and use the code ALMOST30 for 20% off your first delivery.

We also talk about:

  • Julie’s journey with food + health issues
  • Going to college as a Vietnamese immigrant
  • Connecting health issues + emotional stressors
  • Transitioning from finance to tech
  • Finding a functional medicine doctor
  • How our environment impacts our health + diet

Ep. 306 - Lindsey on Harnessing the Power of Overwhelm
52:13

THE SOLO

Raise your hand if you’ve ever been overwhelmed. 🙌 At some point or another it’s a feeling we’ve all had to uncomfortably confront — you’re not alone. In today’s solo episode with Lindsey, she shares how she has dealt with the feeling of overwhelm head on. Although it is tempting to avoid, Lindsey has learned to embrace the feeling because it is one of the most powerful opportunities for growth that the Universe gives us. When we’re open to understanding how and why it happens, we can harness that energy and turn it into something incredible.

Lindsey has been feeling this ebb and flow of overwhelm over the past two years, and with that consistency, she had to ask: What is the purpose of this overwhelm? She shares the answers that came through during a channeled writing session with her higher self, why she avoided overwhelm for so long, and 3 tips for reframing the idea of being overwhelmed.

We also talk about:

  • Where we learn that overwhelm is bad
  • How overwhelm is a challenge to our ego + why that’s a gift
  • Doing the inner work necessary to understand why you are avoiding overwhelm
  • Increasing your tolerance for overwhelm
  • Using breathwork to center yourself

Ep. 305 - The Freedom in Forgiving with Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt

THE INTERVIEW

Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt joins us today for a conversation on forgiveness. Her new book, The Gift of Forgiveness, gives readers an opportunity to deeply understand the act of forgiving and how doing so can positively affect everyone involved. But let’s be real: Forgiveness is SO layered. It requires us to be vulnerable, release the ego, and allow change. Katherine’s book speaks to those layers and how we can work out our “forgiveness muscle” daily. Newly married, Katherine gushes about her relationship with Chris Pratt and shares how forgiveness will always play a huge role in their relationship. We are all going to be faced with opportunities to forgive, and Katherine’s hope is that, by reading the inspiring stories of those who were able to forgive in situations you wouldn’t imagine, you will be able to move forward in practicing forgiveness in your life.

We also talk about:

  • Her book, I Just Graduated… Now What? and why she felt inspired to speak to this formative time
  • How Katherine got over her fear of sharing details about her life
  • How forgiveness can be a gift you give yourself
  • How to ask for help + advice when you need it
  • The process of finding stories for her book
  • The physicality of holding on to anger
  • Times when you don’t have to forgive
  • Forgiveness within relationships

Ep. 304 - Honest Look at Authenticity with Krista
53:01

CATCH UP WITH K + L

K & L have some exciting information to share about the 2020 Almost 30 retreat coming up in May! Last year, 24 women attended the the retreat in Malibu and it was so transformative they had to do it again. They’ve invited their favorite healers, speakers, tarot card readers, astrologists, trainers, and more to support women through this life-changing experience! If you  feel like you need four days away in a beautiful Malibu oasis to deeply connect with yourself and other women, this retreat is for YOU!

For more information, you can go to almost30podcast.com/retreat.

THE SOLO

Krista is exploring this one popular concept in today’s episode: authenticity.Catch that gag reflex! Although authenticity has become such a buzz word cliche lately that it doesn’t really mean anything, that’s exactly why it’s worth discussing. K & L were recently asked how they were so authentic during an interview and it gave Krista some pause because it’s not a word that she identifies with. It feels like a word that doesn’t allow you to change. This is why Krista wants to hash out the details of what true authenticity really is, and how we can balance being an authentic human while also allowing ourselves to change and grow.

We also talk about:

  • Why K hasn’t identified with the term “authentic”
  • The benefits of authenticity
  • K’s goals for her future self
  • How growth and authenticity interplay
  • Accepting growth as a part of yourself
  • Being authentic to the person you are at any given time
  • The expression of the true self

Ep. 276 - Digital Minimalism +The Importance of Deep Work with Cal Newport
01:46:52

CATCH UP WITH K + L

Is it a negative sign to feel pain after the chiropractor? Or could it be locked up emotions that need to be released? Krista is looking for your feedback! K + L also share a personal anecdote from an Almost 30 listener. This sparks a conversation around the power of micro impacts and how messages come to us at the right time.

THE INTERVIEW

Buckle up for today’s episode with Georgetown University professor and New York Times bestselling author, Cal Newport! Cal has written six books, including Digital Minimalism, Deep Work, and So Good They Can’t Ignore You. Today, we are scratching the surface of these incredibly powerful and insightful reads.

Are you searching for an answer as to why we compulsively look at our phones? Cal reveals the role Facebook and social approval indicators have played in our increased usage. We talk about how phones keep us from feeling boredom and loneliness, and why feeling boredom is actually beneficial. When it comes to the concept of ‘deep work,’ Cal explains why it is a valuable yet rare skill, and how practicing it will allow you to produce higher quality work at a faster rate. He explains factors that affect our ability to do deep work, and we discuss how being unavailable due to an appointment is more socially acceptable than taking deep work time. We then ask Cal why “follow your passion” is actually bad advice, and he shares how passion is something you cultivate over time, which leads to fulfillment and success in your career.

You’ll learn daily hacks for minimizing the time on your phone, and a strategy for families that want to use phones as a tool versus a constant companion. Cal emphasizes being intentional about what you use, why you use it, and how you use it. Let’s go!

We also talk about:

  • Why ‘focusing’ takes practice
  • How deep work reduces the phenomenon “attention residue”
  • The effect of A.I. on deep work
  • How servicing communications affect our anxiety levels
  • The positives and negatives of “Screen Time”
  • The way social media helps sell books
  • Facebook compared to the original idea for the internet

Stay tuned for the live recording to launch as an episode soon!

THE INTERVIEW

Today we are sitting down with travel writer and New York Times best selling author of To Shake the Sleeping Self, Jedidiah Jenkins! From his experience with imposter syndrome to meeting one of his favorites, Cheryl Strayed, and how she came to write a blurb for his book—he has us laughing the whole time. Jedidiah talks about his relationship with his parents after coming out, and shares how he’s never felt shame around his sexuality, even after growing up in an Evangelical Christian household. He also shares how he’s cultivated deep friendships, and how he fosters those relationships and builds community. We have been long awaiting this conversation, and can’t wait to share it with you!

We also talk about:

Ep. 232 - Ayana Young on Climate Change + How We Can Reconnect with and Save Mother Earth
01:47:22

Our relationship with Mother Earth, and the need for even the smallest of actions to protect her, is our focus in today’s podcast with Ayana Young. She is the founder of the nonprofit For The Wild which now encompasses the 1 Million Redwoods reforestation project, For the Wild podcast, and a new spinoff series birthed from a preservation campaign around the Tongass National Forest. Ayana’s journey as an advocate and protector of our Earth began when she was studying Ecology at Columbia University.  She eventually dropped out to become a full time political organizer. She intertwined the environmental concerns with the “Occupy Wall Street” movement to bring awareness to the decline of our planet’s health.

Ayana’s passion comes through as she illustrates how we are connected to everything; our modern lives are directly related to taking resources from the planet and not reciprocating. She explains the detriments of logging and building dams and howgold mining has created genocide in the west by producing high volumes of waste water. She urges us to invest in our local communities, and to educate ourselves and become more aware of climate change even when it’s overwhelming and heartbreaking. Ayana shares how she recommits herself to the Earth every day, and how each of us can reestablish that connection.

We also talk about:

  • The politics behind forest fires

Ep. 231 - Dr. Jen Esquer on Overcoming Infidelity + Reconnecting to Your Body + Intuition
01:28:33

This episode if for anyone who has ever felt disconnected from their body and intuition, for anyone navigating life after betrayal and for anyone wanting to forgive others and themselves. This is an intimate conversation on relationships, trust, listening to your physical and emotional bodies. Joining us is physical therapist Dr. Jen Esquer, founder of the The Mobility Method, known for relieving pain, preventing injury, and optimizing movement. Jen is all about affecting change in the body through education, movement, and building appreciation for what our unique bodies are capable of doing.

But we are honored to have Jen talk about more than mobility today. She opens up about her past relationship ending in infidelity, the way she handled the heartbreak, and how connected she became to her inner knowing. It really struck a chord with us when she discusses the importance of having friends that can hold a safe space, without judgment, to release the spectrum of emotions that may arise. We unpack the benefits of breathwork and the effect it can have on your parasympathetic nervous system.  For example, it allows one to release emotions so they don’t stay trapped. Jen gives a generous tool box if we ever lose ourselves in someone or a situation and want to reconnect with who we really are.

We also talk about:

  • Knowing when to leave and when to work on a relationship
  • How our triggers may affect other people

Ep. 211 - The LA Foster Care System, Social Work + How We Can Help
01:32:31

We are so grateful for today’s episode and today’s guest, sharing her story and providing an inside look at what it’s like to be a social worker in the foster care system today. On a previous episode, we had mentioned how we’d like to be educated more on the foster care system, and an incredible member of #almost30nation reached out to share her story. This conversation today is emotional, insightful, and is sure to offer you a clearer picture of the field of social work and the world foster kids live in today.

Words from our guest:

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) working and residing in Los Angeles County. I work with children, teenagers, and families with severe histories of trauma and mental illness. The children and families I work with are a part of the LA County foster care system. I support my clients by helping them process their trauma, empowering them to reach their full potential, advocating for their needs, navigating the foster care system, and guiding them through the roller coaster journey they are on. I have never met more resilient people than my clients, and they inspire me to do this challenging work and be the best version of myself day in and day out.

I am originally from the Bay Area and moved to the East Coast to complete my Master of Social Work (MSW) program at New York University. About 5 years ago, I moved to Los Angeles and began working within the LA County Department of Mental Health and Department of Children and Family Services. I was working with a 13 yr old female client who was very suicidal. I was going to her home 3-4 times weekly for therapy sessions to ensure she was safe, had someone to talk to, and could work through her suicidal thoughts. As our time was coming to an end, we wrote each other letters as part of our termination and goodbye process. In her letter to me she wrote, "thank you for letting me realize that life is worth living" THIS is the reason I do what I do.

Helping one person might not change the whole world, but it can change the world for one person. Honestly, that is what motivates me day in and day in. That is what I find so rewarding about my job. I know I am not going to “save” all my clients. I know some will fall through the cracks. But I also know that if I can make an impact on just one child, that I am helping change the world for that one person.

Statistics (from CASA organization):

Foster youth in LA is 30,000

33% of California’s foster youth currently reside in LA County

73% of foster youth have spent two or more years in the system

38% of youth have had five or more foster care placements

Less than 50% of foster youth graduate from high school and only 3% graduate from college

33% of girls in foster care become pregnant at least once by age 17

25% of youth aging out of foster care will be incarcerated within two years

At age 19, 60% of former foster youth are unemployed

27% of the homeless population spent time in foster care

Only 3% graduate from college

Half of all young adults who age out of foster care end up homeless or incarcerated.

75% of young women in foster care report at least one pregnancy by age 21

We also talk about…

  • Being in court with her client + the back and forth of cases
  • What drew her to the field of social work
  • Educating others on the foster care system + the money involved in fostering
  • Vetting to be a foster parent
  • How a child ends up in the foster care system
  • Signs of abuse to look out for
  • Working with rauma
  • Preparing for a child a loving family
  • The types of therapies that she uses with her clients

  • The process to work in social work
