If you're like most people in the midst of a breakup, it can feel like your world has been turned upside down. It can feel like your guts have been ripped out of you. #40: Is It Possible to be with Your Ex and Not Ruin the Party?

No joke, does this idea seem like a pipe dream? Like chasing down a unicorn? How can it be, if you (and your ex) both want "what's best for the kids?" Holidays, graduations, weddings, funerals ... these are all times that you will most likely be around your ex again. And these are all times, that your kids and family will be embarrassed and feel awkward ... if you don't get COMMITTED to actually doing and being what's best for your kids, instead of just setting a goal to do it. There's a BIG DIFFERENCE between Commitment energy and Goal-seeking energy. In this episode, begin to figure out where you're really at, before it's too late.

#16: Is Your Addiction to Thinking Complicating and Stalling Your Divorce?

Our thoughts can be as powerful as any drug; and our brain is like the drug dealer. When heartbroken especially, it's so easy to get addicted to thoughts that hold us down. Thoughts like "I feel like my marriage was a total lie," "How am I going to survive?" "Will I ever stop crying?" "Sh*t, I forgot to pack the kids lunch ... I'm such a bad mom." And what happens then? Stress, anxiety and fear consume you and drive your behavior and decisions. The results can be a longer divorce, money wasted on legal fees, and more unhappiness now and in the future. Who wants that? You deserve better. It's time to put down the drug.

#12: Getting the Numbers Right

In a lot of ways, divorce is akin to winding down a business. Consider your marriage a partnership and the divorce is the dissolution of the business of marriage. To help maintain an objective perspective, a Certified Financial Planner® (CFP®) or Certified Divorce Financial Analyst can be extremely useful. Meet Stephanie Maloney, my guest. Stephanie is exactly that, a CFP and CDFA, and the owner of Peace Talks, a California mediation service.

Stephanie helps take the stress out of the numbers so you can feel more confident in your choices. Join us, for a numbers, divorce, and mediation talk. Bring your questions!

#6: Courage to Change

To divorce with heart and build a better life you need courage. Change cannot come without courage. Courage is strength. Courage is taking risks. Even risks on yourself for the sake of your children.

Courage is being willing to stand out. To stand out from the crowd and resist the norm. Courage is risking judgment. Judgment from those even closest to you. But it’s only in courage where you discover your strength and can create change.

Courage can feel like sacrifice and be tricky to recognize. It may feel like having to give up some legal entitlement, or like trading money for time, or kids. You may be criticized and judged a fool for your choices. But courage is not foolish and you are no fool.

To divorce with heart is to lead with the heart, and this can never be a foolish act. What are you struggling with the most? What is creating the most difficulty? Maybe it’s an opportunity to exercise courage. Have your questions answered and gain insight from a different perspective. Call in to explore courage in your divorce or co-parenting relationship.

#4: Forgiveness is the Path to Freedom and Trust

Forgiveness is a release. Anger lurks in the absence of forgiveness. Like a Loch Ness monster anger will lie beneath the surface of all your life experiences and lurk around every corner. When we have been stung by anger and hold onto anger, we guard and brace against life, missing the good and creating the bad. And when you guard and brace you block trust.

With trust you are open. Open to receiving all things. Good and bad. Without it, you don’t trust that all good things will happen. In this way, a lack of trust- pre-disposes us to undesirable experiences. Its natural to live with a negativity bias, but without forgiveness in your heart the bias is increased tenfold. Having a lack of forgiveness interferes with your ability to have a better life.

Divorce is an excellent opportunity to learn and practice forgiveness. Forgiveness of others, of course, but most importantly forgiveness of one’s self. Because the greatest gifts of life can only come when one truly trusts himself. It’s in trusting ourselves that we learn to trust others and love again.

#3: Blame Breeds Battles

Blame gets in the way of happiness. Blame intrudes on your right to a better life, a more peaceful life. A life that’s easy, joyful, and in sync with your highest and best. A life where your children are happy and know they’re loved. A life where your children are well adjusted and not scarred by divorce. A life in balance.

Blame is in the way. Blame allows you to hide yourself from your self. In pointing fingers at someone else, you escape the truth of who you are. Because you’re not looking. You can’t see what you don’t look at. So, when you point the finger, you see your husband and all his flaws and faults; what you don’t see are all the ways that you contributed to your perception. All the ways that you contributed to your experience. All that ways that your thoughts, feelings, actions, and emotions, contributed to the fall-out.

The problem is that when you’re blind to your self, you are powerless. A victim of circumstance; not a leader and co-designer of your life. It’s only when you see yourself, that you can begin to take responsibility for your actions, choices and behavior. And you want to see your self, so you don’t keep showing up the same way and keep repeating the same patterns with your ex-husband or next boyfriend.

When you live on automatic pilot, your world becomes one unconscious trigger after another. Discover through divorce, the power to influence your reality and experience. the power lies within; but you need to stop blaming to find it.

#2: Making Your Break Up Work for Your Children

Some people stay together for the kids. Some don’t. But what they have in common is the desire to not hurt their kids. The truth is, kids get hurt when parents break up. It’s inevitable. But kids’ hurt when parents stay together, too, if being together means living inside a relationship built on power struggles, arguments, bickering, or apathy.

So no matter what circumstance you are in, your kids will hurt. They will be sad, angry, and frustrated. This is normal. So what can you do, when you want to “do whats’ best” for your kids? Simple- help them not to suffer. Protect them from damage, by setting a good example. Don’t fight over your kids and force them to pick a side: team mom or team dad. Create one team. Your family team, despite the break up, because for your child, family continues. Don’t turn your kids into messengers or force them into tattle-tale. Don’t lie to your kids and don’t fill their head with your side of the story.

Let them have fun and enjoy their time with their other parent. Let them know that it is ok and that you are ok. Let them know that no matter what- it is not their fault and that they are loved by both of you. Be mindful of your energy and your mood.

Kids are more perceptive then we often give them credit for. Create calm and respect free-will. Remember you are creating memories with each day and every moment. Your child will soon be an adult, looking back on his life. Do you want him to look back and think the worst, or do you want him to feel like everything is ok.

You can have this and save yourself the custody battles and years of litigation, stress and anxiety by being mindful of your choices, your energy and the actions you take.

#1: Making Your Divorce Work For You

Divorce and Heartbreak can tear you down or build you up. The choice—and it really is a choice- is yours. Make your divorce a journey of self-discovery and transformation by adopting the mission to Divorce with Heart.

A divorce with heart is a divorce that cultivates peace and strengthens future relationships. Your future life and your children’s happiness depends on the choices you make and your mindset. Where you are now is colored by your thoughts and feelings about the past; where you are going will be colored by the present.

You have the power to create a colorful future and reset your relationship with your spouse and children. You are not just ending your marriage, you are building a foundation for the future. Don’t bring the problems of the marriage with you; change it, and become a warrior of peace.

Through acceptance, forgiveness, courage, and personal power, you can create a better life. You can rediscover your true self, and begin to create a life lived on purpose and in alignment with your heart.

Your children will be spared the aftermath of a nasty divorce and the proverbial “broken family,” and will have the opportunity to gain two independent, loving, and whole parents instead. Don't waste your time fighting; grow and create something better instead.
