The Mystery of Bobby Dunbar
5414

On August 23, 1912, a four-year-old boy named Bobby Dunbar vanished while on a fishing trip to Swayze Lake in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. When Mrs. Lessie Dunbar realized that her son was gone, she contacted the police, who began a massive search for the boy.

Eight months passed before the family’s hopes for Bobby’s return were finally realized —– or at least that’s how it seemed. But no part of this story would turn out to be simple. The boy who returned home was NOT Bobby Dunbar.

The Vanished Heiress (The Disappearance of Dorothy Arnold)
4466

A newspaper in 1910 wrote about Dorothy:

"She disappeared from one of the busiest streets on earth, at the sunniest hours of a brilliant afternoon, with thousands within sight and reach, men and women who knew her on every side, and officers of the law thickly strewn in her path."

Such a young woman simply does not just disappear. And yet she did. Because no matter how perfect Dorothy seemed, not everything was as it appeared.

Kidnapped For Ransom (Little Charlie Ross)
4258

In 1874, just nine years after President Lincoln was slain, the nation was again shocked by a terrible event. It was not the death of a great leader but the disappearance of a previously unknown four-year-old name Charles Brewster Ross. “Little Charlie Ross” – as Americans would soon know him – was stolen away in what became the first kidnapping for ransom in the history of the United States.

The Man In The Green Pajamas
3739

It was at the Sandman where the man in the green pajamas was staying when he came to Jacksonville. Of course, that wasn’t his name. It was Bruce Campbell, and he was a stockbroker from Massachusetts. He came here to visit his son, who was then a professor at MacMurray College in town. Bruce’s first grandchild had just been born and it was meant to be a happy visit for the family.

But it turned out to be a tragic one.

Season Seven Trailer and Topic Reveal
1095

Season seven of the American Hauntings Podcast, "GONE", will include stories of mysterious and impossible disappearances that we found in the archives to be the most intriguing, compelling, and downright chilling.

If all these people vanished so easily from the face of the earth, then it means that it could happen to anyone – perhaps even you.

Because, as you’ll learn this season, a disappearance doesn’t have to be possible in order for it to occur. In fact, one of the most baffling vanishings of all time simply couldn’t have happened – and yet it did.

The Lawson Family Christmas
5900

Charlie Lawson, the quiet, unassuming man had become more outgoing, especially with the children. He laughed and told jokes, which he never did. His wife might have been happy with those changes in her husband if they hadn’t been so abrupt – and if Charlie had not been spending an inordinate amount of time with their 17-year-old daughter, Marie. Something terrible was going to happen, and it would ruin Christmas in a way that only murder and tragedy can do.

Victims of the Ax Fiend
5508

One of the strangest murder sprees in American history occurred across Louisiana and Texas in the early 1910s. Local newspapers called the first crime "the most brutal murder in the history of this section," and there would be many more -- all linked to the same killer. The newspapers of the era, dealing with murder victims that were all African-Americans, claimed the killings were connected to a deranged Voodoo woman and a cult called the "Church of Sacrifice," which used the victims for bloody rituals. The story wasn't true – the real story may have been even stranger – and they remain unsolved.

The Bluebeard Of Quiet Dell
4833

During the early years of the Great Depression, the crimes of Harry Powers appalled and fascinated thousands of people, but he is barely remembered today – much like the methods that he used to find his victims. He sought out women through matrimonial mail-order ads, seeking wives to live on his peaceful West Virginia farm. But those who answered the ads were never seen again.

The Starved Rock Murders
5981

On March 14, 1960, the bodies of three women from the Chicago suburbs were discovered in St. Louis Canyon, one of the many natural wonders at Starved Rock State Park, near Utica, Illinois. The crime shocked northern Illinois and led to a manhunt that snared a confessed killer who spent the next 59 years behind bars. It is one of the most shocking stories to ever occur in this otherwise peaceful region – and it left lingering spirits behind.

Strangers In The Night (The Keddie Resort Murders)
3780

One of the most disturbing multiple murders in California history occurred on April 11, 1981, when three victims – a mother, her teenage son, and the son's friend – were beaten to death in a remote cabin in the woods while children slept soundly in the next room. A fourth victim – a 12-year-old daughter – vanished in the night, and her body was found a year later, miles away from the gruesome scene. The murders remain unsolved to this day, but it went on to inspire THE STRANGERS, one of the most terrifying films ever made.

Testimony From Beyond The Grave
3931

On January 23, 1897, the body of a young woman named Zona Heaster Shue was discovered in her home in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. It seemed to be a rather ordinary case of perhaps domestic discord gone wrong, but in the end, the case turned out to be anything but ordinary. In fact, it went on to become the only case in which the word of a ghost helped to solve a crime and convict a murderer!

Murder On Saxtown Road
2846

On March 19, 1874, horror came to the small town of Millstadt, Illinois. It was a place where nothing bad could ever really happen – or at least that's what the residents there in the latter part of the nineteenth century believed. However, the murders that occurred on Saxtown Road forever shattered that illusion. When a local German family was brutally slaughtered in 1874, it created a dark, unsolved mystery – and a haunting that continues today.

The Haunting Of Harrison Woods
3925

One of the most shameful events to ever occur in American history happened in the small southern Illinois town of Herrin in the summer of 1922. It would be a horrific labor union massacre that would garner national outrage and would forever stain the area with blood. It would also leave behind a fearful haunting that would linger in a place outside of town called Harrison Woods for more than three decades after the carnage occurred. The ghosts remained as a reminder of the dark deeds of man.

Forlorn Hope: The Donner Party Part 1
5224

In the spring of 1846, a wagon train of hopeful immigrants left Illinois, bound for California, but they had no idea what awaited them on the trail. Cursed by bad luck and mistakes, they took an untested route through mountains and deserts, only to be stranded in the Sierra Nevadas by heavy winter snowfalls. What followed was the horror of death, starvation, desperation, and cannibalism.

The Deadliest Month (Coal Mining Disasters)
6831

In December 1907, three coal mine disasters took place, killing hundreds of men who dared to tear apart the earth in search of wealth. The deadly tragedies – and the ghosts who linger because of them – remain some of the most terrifying accidents to ever occur in American history and still haunt the Appalachian region to this day.

The Curse of Black River Falls
4677

What happened in the town of Black River Falls, Wisconsin, between 1890 and 1910? What caused the once pleasant and thriving small town to become a place of death, horror, and strangeness? The mines and lumber industries shut down at that time, leaving people without jobs and causing the banks and many businesses to fail. Illness spread, and people turned to alcohol for comfort. Bad weather devastated the local crops, and the cold, bleak winters caused starvation and anguish. Talk of witchcraft and devil worship circulated among the residents. During this terrible period, the seemingly doomed inhabitants of Black River Falls surrendered to suicide, murder, destruction, and depravity.

Mrs. Wakeman vs The Antichrist
6138

Religious zealots have been awaiting the appearance of the Antichrist on earth for centuries. There have been those who have actively sought him out and some who would do anything to destroy him – like a woman named Rhoda Wakeman, a prophet and religious leader of the nineteenth century. In fact, on the morning of December 24, 1855, Rhoda killed a man who was possessed by the Antichrist in New Haven, Connecticut. The man was a member of her sect, and he participated in his own execution… It is a story of murder, prophecy, religious mania, and a death-crazed belief that the end of the world was coming soon.

In the modern days of the 1920s, a pair of homicides that came to be known as the "Hex Murders" – and the subsequent hex scare that followed – marked a substantial turning point in American history, especially in the way that the public perceived the practice of folk magic – or what locals called "pow-wowing" – in the region.

The American Witch
5133

Salem was far from the only "witchcraft outbreak" in American history. Witches – falsely accused and the real thing – can be found throughout the early history of America, from healers to herbalists, hex signs, and hoodoo doctors. And in some cases of accused witches, murder and death followed in the wake of public outcry. Here's what happened.

The Dark Day Of Signs And Wonder
4206

"The 19th of May 1780, was a remarkable dark day. Candles were lighted in many houses; the birds were silent and disappeared, and the fowls retired to roost. ... A very general opinion prevailed, that the Day of Judgment was at hand," Timothy Dwight wrote. The end was coming, and God had lowered his hand over the people of New England for their wickedness. Or at least that's what a lot of religious zealots believed in the spring of 1780. It seemed that the people of America were doomed. What happened that day? No one knows.

The Many Haunts Of Rudolph Valentino

On August 23, 1926, the most heartbreaking Hollywood news of the silent film era reached the general public when New York City’s Polyclinic Hospital announced that Rudolph Valentino was dead.

Valentino -- known as the “Sheik” and “Hollywood’s Greatest Lover” – had died from a burst appendix. It seemed too boring of a death for a man like Valentino and, not surprisingly, rumors followed him to the grave.

The Tombstone Thunderbird & Season 5 Announcement
1235

On April 26, 1880, the Tombstone, Arizona, newspaper, The Epitaph, printed a startling report. According to the article, two cowboys saw a giant bird outside of town, shot it, and carried its gigantic carcass into Tombstone.

How, I asked myself, could what seemed to be a prehistoric flying creature have been shot down by cowboys in the 1880s? Such a thing seemed impossible, but here was the story – and, of course, there was the photograph. That was the really exciting part! I still remember what that photograph looked like! Or do I?

Hollywood's Haunted Hotels Part 3
6009

Hollywood. As we keep telling you, it’s not really on the maps anymore. It’s not a town and hasn’t been for years. It’s just another part of Los Angeles that doesn’t look nearly as great as it does in the movies or on postcards. It’s a little run-down, more than a little seedy, and desperately trying to hang onto its former glamor like an aging actress that’s had one too many facelifts.

But Hollywood is a place for reinvention. Such is the case with the once famous Knickerbocker Hotel – well, not the by the hour part, but you’ll soon understand what I mean – it started as one thing, became another, and then something else altogether.

Hollywood's Haunted Hotels Part 2
4247

Today we talk The Cecil Hotel, Richard Ramirez, Elisa Lam, and numerous suicides.

Hollywood is nothing but a façade these days. It’s not even a real town anymore – it’s just another part of Los Angeles that looks a little worse for wear. And the sun-bleached hotels are much like Hollywood itself. They’re aging, faded, and trying to hang onto the glamor they had in decades past, when it was movie stars and not hookers that you’d find along Hollywood Boulevard. Some of them may be seedy and a little beaten up, but they have a history – and it’s a history that keeps coming back again and again and often, it returns as stories of ghosts and other assorted strangeness...

Hollywood's Haunted Hotels Part 1
3924

Many of Hollywood’s older hotels are much like Hollywood itself. They are aging and slightly faded, still trying to hang onto the shimmer of glamour that they enjoyed in the days gone by. Like other parts of Hollywood, a few of the hotels have seen face-lifts in recent years, which have stirred up memories and “spirits” of the past. Not all the ghostly stories, and wicked scandals, are products of recent times, however, many of them have been around for years.

Hollywood's Haunted Theaters
6858

What is about a theater that seems to attract a ghost? Could it be the range of emotions expressed by the actors, from joy to sorrow to fear? Perhaps all that emotion attracts spirits who need that energy to exist. Or perhaps terrible or tragic events occur in a theater – just as they do in other kinds of buildings – and that leaves an impression behind as a haunting.

BONUS: The Los Feliz Murder House
715

In 1959, Harold Perelson seemed to be a man with everything going for him. He had a distinguished career as a doctor, a beautiful wife, loving children, and a wonderful home in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles that was ideal for what seemed to be the perfect family.

And then on the night of December 6, neighbors were awakened by the sound of Harold Perelson’s daughter, Judye, screaming and banging on their door...When the police arrived, they entered the Perelson house and found Harold’s wife, Lillian, dead in her bed and Harold himself dead from a massive drug overdose. He had apparently committed suicide.

A copy of Dante’s DIVINE COMEDY was open on Harold’s nightstand, highlighting a passage that read:

Midway upon the journey of our life, I found myself within a forest dark, for the straightforward pathway had been lost…

It might as well have been Harold’s suicide note.

What makes Hollywood – “Hollywood?” The movies, of course, and the movie stars. But behind the façade – where the sausage is made, so to speak, are the studios where the magic happens. And the desperate spirits who refuse to vacate long after the director has called "cut."

Mullholland's Fall And The St. Francis Dam Collapse
2848

At just three minutes before midnight on March 12, 1928, the St. Francis Dam, which had been designed as a reservoir for the Los Angeles water supply by William Mulholland, suddenly failed, releasing 11 billion gallons of water into a narrow valley in northeastern Los Angeles County, destroying everything in its path. Over the course of the next four hours, a roaring wall of water swept through the night, traveling 55 miles from the San Francisquito Valley, through the Santa Clara Valley, and on to the Pacific Ocean.

BONUS: Horror of the Heights
641

On this bonus episode, Troy discusses the "Phantom of the Heights", a tall, thin figure, dressed all in black, who began sprinting across the rooftops of O’Donnell Heights. It leapt on and off buildings, broke into houses, attacked people, enticed a young girl to crawl under a car and played music in the nearby graveyard. Groups of young men patrolled the streets, while others waited by their windows at night, keeping a sleepy watch for the “Phantom Prowler” that eluded his pursuers and vanished into the cemetery before he could be caught.

The Axeman of New Orleans pt 1
4998

New Orleans war against vice – like the Great War in Europe – appeared to be nearly at an end. The city was poised to become a normal, orderly, Christian place that the reformers wanted it to be. Until, that is, the appearance of a mysterious figure with an ax that would start a frenzy in New Orleans – over murder and, of all things, jazz music – that was like nothing the city had seen before or since.

Night Doctors, Needle Men, And Murder
4389

Vampires, ghosts, monsters, and an assortment of murderers. All of them have roamed the streets of New Orleans at one time or another and have become part of the city’s spookiest lore. Some of these boogeymen – from the Needle Men to the Gown Man to Hugging Molly – have sometimes even caused more fear than the killers have. And that’s largely because they conjured up some very bad memories of the past, especially when it came to the Night Doctors.

New Orleans is a city that is known for being out of the ordinary. There are dozens and dozens of old, historic hotels, inns, and mansions that have been turned into bed and breakfasts and guest houses in the French Quarter, and all of them have the kind of atmosphere that you won’t find in any other city in America.

Death In New Orleans
4609

There are 38 cemeteries in New Orleans, so there’s no way that we can get to them all. Instead, we’ll focus on the history of death, burials, and boneyards in the city and then take a closer look at the cemetery that is the most popular among tourists. Of course, just using those two words together – “cemetery” and “tourist” – says a lot what kind of traveler embraces New Orleans. I’m thinking that it’s a lot like the kind of listener that never misses this podcast.

Voodoo In New Orleans
4846

Ask any tourist – or anyone who watched a season of American Horror Story – and they can tell you that Marie Laveau is the undisputed Queen of Voodoo in New Orleans. Voodoo is as big a part of New Orleans as jazz, gumbo, and Mardi Gras. Most tourists, even after seeing the voodoo shops in the French Quarter, assume that voodoo is a thing of the past – but they couldn’t be more wrong. The religious faith is very much alive today and it’s taken just as seriously now as it was in the days of Marie Laveau.

The Birth of Jazz and the Red Light District

Jazz music is, without a doubt, an American invention. That’s about the only thing that we know for sure, other than it originated within the African-American communities of New Orleans in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It was not actually born in the red-light districts of New Orleans – it just seemed that way. It was in the city’s whorehouses that jazz became famous.

In the early 1800's, New Orleans was a tough place. Business at the popular pirate party cove, Grand Terre, was shabbily conducted, with every man for himself, and it soon became clear that a leader was needed to take matters into hand and bring order out of the chaos. The man who stepped into that role was Jean Lafitte, the infamous pirate to ever call New Orleans "home."

In the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter – just beyond Jackson Square and the St. Louis Cathedral – is the Bourbon Orleans Hotel. It is a place where the past truly collides with the present in both colorful and eccentric ways. The building, and the ground that it stands upon, has seen a wide variety of uses during its history, and it seems that every one of those moments in time has left behind an impression in the shape of ghosts and spirits.

On April 10, 1843, a fire broke out in the home of Dr. Louis LaLaurie and his wife, Delphine. The house, located on Royal Street, was one of the showplaces of Creole New Orleans. The mansion had played host to some of the most elaborate soirees and parties in the city but in recent months, rumors about the treatment of some of the LaLaurie slaves had caused some party invitations to be declined.
