Episode Date
High Cholesterol With Keto, Cyclical Keto For Workouts, Fiber Needs, Growth Hormone Treatment, and more! -- #079
01:01:56

We have some great questions to get to, once again, in this Keto Hot Seat episode! It’s stuff that you guys are wondering and need to know about in order to become the healthiest versions of yourself. So let’s dive in!

Visit http://www.shawnmynar.com/ketoforwomen/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

Topics Discussed in this Episode:

  • How do you eat loads of low-carb vegetables and still stay keto?
  • Once fat-adapted, should we try to stay in ketosis 24/7, 365 days a year?
  • Do we really need fiber? What if you’re someone who gets digestive distress when you eat a lot of fiber?
  • What if you’ve started to train more, lifting weights, and you find it hard to stay in ketosis because you’re also eating more? How do you restart your eating and get back in ketosis and stay there?
  • What should you do when your LDL cholesterol increases over 300 on keto?
  • What are some tips for nursing moms on keto?
  • What is cyclical keto? How can you avoid muscle loss while following this? What is a typical day of eating and timing look like?
  • Possible digestive reflux issues aside, if you’re feeling hungry before bed, will eating something small prevent growth hormone from being released when it’s supposed to during sleep?
  • Can HGH treatment help with hormone balance on a keto diet? What are its benefits?

Key Takeaways:

  • For most people, it is a lot more vegetables than you think before you get kicked out of ketosis.
  • If you are working on building a keto lifestyle and you want to do this for a while, then it may be okay for you to come out of ketosis now and then for that lifestyle piece and make this feel like it’s something that you could do for the long term.
  • If you go out of ketosis and start producing that level of ketones that you’re used to for a day or a couple of days, or even weeks, that doesn’t mean that you’re not fat-adapted anymore. You can still be fat-adapted and in that metabolic flexibility whether you’re in ketosis or not.
  • Fiber can definitely help a lot of digestive issues, but it can also either help or worsen constipation or diarrhea. There is a fine line for everybody as we all have our “fiber sweet spot”.
  • Cholesterol and even LDL cholesterol isn’t the end all, be all to determine our cardiovascular health.
  • A traditional cyclical keto diet is five days of low-carb keto and two days of high-carb not-at-all keto.
  • Going to bed hungry can disrupt your sleep.
  • The dawn effect is basically your liver dumping sugar into your blood early in the morning. This happens for the body’s glucose-dependent functions.

Action Steps:

  • Gauge your threshold and find those vegetables that you feel good eating, are nutrient-dense, and don’t push you out of ketosis or don’t cause your blood sugar to spike to a level that gets you out of fat-burning mode.
  • Try to find your “fiber sweet spot.”
  • When testing for ketones, make sure you do it far enough away from your workouts (about 3 to 4 hours later).
  • Consider getting tested what genotype (APOE) you are.
  • Get a good variety of fats in your diet every single day.

“We all have different thresholds, and we all have different vegetables and different foods and different tolerances. So this is where it becomes YOUR version of keto, finding out what works for YOU.”

“If you’re not even providing the needs for your body to survive, you’re definitely also not providing the needs for you to gain anything from [your] workouts.”

Your Keto (Or Not) Holiday Guide -- #078
54:35

Are you worried about the stress and the not-so-healthy food choices that come along with the holiday season? How can you stay keto this time of the year? Here are some tips to make it through the holidays and still feeling good by the time the New Year rolls in.

Visit http://www.shawnmynar.com/ketoforwomen/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

Topics Discussed in this Episode:

  • Tips to stay keto during the holidays
  • The health and happiness scale and how to use it
  • Tips to manage your stress and practice self-care
  • What to do around parties
  • Learning a more intuitive/flexible keto approach
  • How to deal with the friends and family that don’t understand what you’re doing

Key Takeaways:

  • For the most part, those meals that you’re having, regardless of what time of year it is or what’s in front of you, should always be the meals that you enjoy but that also provide you health.
  • It’s no secret that this time of year, the whole month of December, is the most stressful time for all of us. This is where we have to stay in the right mindset in order to continue putting our health as a priority and not giving in to emotional eating.
  • What you eat is ultimately your decision. It’s all about you and what you want to do.
  • There is so much room within keto, and this holiday season could really be a chance for you to experiment with how flexible your keto can be.
  • The best way to start the conversation with someone who’s interested in knowing more about keto is telling them your story, sharing your health journey, and letting them know how keto has been for you.

Action Steps:

  • Ditch the diet mentality.
  • Do daily check-ins of how your meals make you feel. Where does each of your meals fall on the health and happiness spectrum?
  • Practice daily gratitude.
  • Take your stress management and self-care to a whole new level starting NOW.
  • When you’re going to a party:
  • Bring your own keto dish to pass.
  • Don’t go hungry. Eat before you go.
  • Give yourself a pep talk. Get back to your bigger WHY.
  • If someone questions what you’re eating or not eat and why you’re putting certain things on your plate, the simple thing is just to let them know that you’re working on XYZ health issues and eating this way has really helped it and is continuing to help it.
  • Keep your ‘movement’ a high priority. Don’t stop going to the gym.
  • Make sure you’re getting good quality sleep. Don’t let your stress levels get so high that you’re not getting any sleep.
  • Keep your connections meaningful this holiday season.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The new, updated, and beautified version of The Fat Burning Female Project is coming up in January! So watch out for it!

Shawn said:

“If you’re going into this holiday season thinking you are on the keto diet, you will have a much higher likelihood of ‘slipping up’ on that diet because you have that thought process still going on in your brain.”

“Remember, the most important thing is that you feel good, of course, during the holiday season so you can actually enjoy yourself, but also afterward, too. We want January 2nd to feel just as good as we do right now.”

What Your Keto Diet May Be Missing with Jimmy Moore and Christine Moore, NTP -- #077
49:48

How do you feel about listening to a nutritional therapy nerd-off session? Well, this episode turns out to be exactly that, with nutritional therapy practitioners Jimmy Moore and Christine Moore as they talk about their new book, Real Food Keto. Join us as we geek out and just go crazy over everything nutritional therapy!

Visit http://www.shawnmynar.com/ketoforwomen/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

Topics Discussed in this Episode:

  • Christine’s and Jimmy’s health stories and how they got into keto and into real food
  • Going on the Nutritional Therapy Practitioner Program
  • Putting all the principles of nutritional therapy into one book
  • Tips to make sure that the food you’re getting is truly ‘real food’
  • Tips for people who don’t like drinking water
  • The importance and benefits of vitamins and minerals
  • What’s going to happen to keto in the future

Key Takeaways:

  • Thinness does not equal healthfulness. There are so many more important things to health than how much a person weighs.
  • Anything that is not ‘real food’ is actually a food-like disease agent.
  • The more you eat ‘real food’, your body is going to get nourished and you’ll end up not being hungry as often as before, so you get to save on your grocery bill, too.
  • Jimmy and Christine’s HEALTH acronym:
  • Holistically healed and optimized
  • Exercise the body and mind
  • Absence of disease or sickness
  • Loving yourself and others
  • Trusting God or a higher power
  • Handling day-to-day stressors
  • Carbonated water can interfere with your body’s ability to digest and absorb calcium.
  • Vitamin B1, the way it’s excreted through the skin, is a natural insect repellent.

Action Steps:

  • Not everybody can afford to eat grass-fed, grass-finished beef and other organic and free-range foods. But make the best choices that you can for the situation that you’re in.
  • Shop at your local farmers market if you have access to one.
  • Eat foods in season.
  • Read labels.
  • Get adequate water intake by doing the quarter-hour solution. Keep some water by you at all times and take a little sip every 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes or 60 minutes.
  • Take your weight and divide it by two, and that’s the ounces of water that you should have in a day. However, it should not exceed one gallon.
  • Get a vitamin and mineral test to see exactly where you stand on vitamins and minerals.

Jimmy said:

“We’ve lost touch with what real food is… Isn’t it sad you have to put a qualifier in front of the word ‘food’ by calling it ‘real food’? If it’s not ‘real food’, it’s not food.”

Christine said:

“Health is not just about your diet. It’s not about the food you eat. It’s about exercise. It’s about you being grateful for your food. It’s about having faith in whatever you have faith in.”

Healing Adrenals Vs. Insulin Resistance, Food Quality On A Budget, Keto And Insomnia, Keto Quickstart Tips + More! -- #076
01:02:00

We have another Keto Hot Seat episode for you with questions that make for some very interesting topics. And like I always say, any information that helps us to become the healthiest and happiest we can be is good for us. So let’s dive in!

Visit http://www.shawnmynar.com/ketoforwomen/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

Keto Hot Seat Questions Answered in This Episode:

  • How can we eat healthy on a budget?
  • Insulin resistance versus adrenal fatigue -- which is more important to tackle first?
  • What do you do for ketosis and insomnia?
  • Is keto a sustainable lifestyle?
  • How can we increase our testosterone levels without medication?
  • Which hormones that affect mainly women are most impacted by the keto lifestyle?
  • Can CBD oils help with anxiety, joint pain, and inflammation?
  • What is an easy way to start being keto?

Key Takeaways:

  • For you and your family, it will always be the best thing health-wise and the best thing budget-wise to eat real food.
  • It will be pretty much impossible to completely become insulin sensitive and get this really great fasting insulin number while you still have adrenal fatigue. Blood sugar issues will continue to keep your adrenals taxed and your adrenals being taxed will continue to promote blood sugar issues.
  • If you have low testosterone, you will have a poor libido, you will be unable to gain muscle, you will have no energy, and you won’t even be able to improve in your workouts.
  • Keto has two different ways it can go -- it can get into this place of being really stressful for the body or it can be a really healthy, healing protocol when done in the proper way for us as women.

Action Steps:

  • Eat real food. Skip the processed food.
  • Practice good sleep hygiene to get a better quality of sleep, to help your adrenals and insulin resistance.
  • If you have blood sugar issues, make sure that you work out.
  • Figure out your stress levels and what causes your stress.
  • Increase your testosterone levels by lifting weights.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

If you could leave a review for the show over on iTunes, let me know what you’re loving. I would so appreciate it!

As always, if you have any questions, be on the lookout for the Keto Hot Seat call for questions on Facebook and Instagram. Make sure your questions are short, general, and that you haven’t heard the answer to them before.

Take care!

Shawn said:

“Remember how important the mentality around the foods that you’re eating right now and as we move into the holiday season. We don’t have to beat ourselves up. We don’t have to feel bad if we accidentally ate something that we’re now not really all that excited that we ate.”

“No matter what you subscribe to as far as your eating style, whether it’s keto, paleo, vegan, whatever it may be… just get the real food, skip the processed food.”

How long should YOU do keto? -- #075
45:26

Should you be doing keto longer-term or shorter-term or in a cycle? How long should you be doing it? I actually won’t be able to answer this question for you, but I’m here to give you some tools that can help you figure out your own version of keto and for how long YOU should be doing it.

Visit http://www.shawnmynar.com/ketoforwomen/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

Topics Discussed in this Episode:

  • Our goals for being in ketosis
  • The benefits of being in ketosis
  • Things to think about in order to determine whether to continue being on keto for longer or not
  • What cycling in and out of ketosis could look like
  • The fear of coming out of the ketogenic diet

Key Takeaways:

  • There are so many reasons out there why we are in ketosis and doing a ketogenic diet, but for a lot of us, we have similar goals such as metabolic flexibility. We want to be flexible with our ability to use fat as fuel and sugar as fuel.
  • Another goal that we have in getting into ketosis is we want to reset our blood sugar response and reset our inflammation.
  • Being in ketosis will lower our current inflammatory markers and help us build a better inflammatory response.
  • Being in ketosis also helps us rebuild, renew and create new mitochondria so that we have that high energy that we’re looking as well have better bodily functions.
  • At least 6 months of being in ketosis will help us get to our goals and get us to a good state of health and healing.
  • When we talk

Action Steps:

  • When trying to figure out whether you should do keto longer-term or shorter-term or in a cycle, reflect on this: What is your intuition saying?
  • First, make sure that you are in a solid state of ketosis healthfully.
  • Continue being on keto:
  • If you have a health condition that responds well to ketosis.
  • If you have PCOS, epilepsy, neurodegenerative diseases, or anything where there have been really good scientific studies showing a massive improvement in these illnesses when a person is in a ketogenic state.
  • If you like it and you enjoy what you’re eating.
  • If you have health issues that are being resolved because you’re in ketosis.
  • If you come from a past of binging and emotional eating tendencies and being on keto has helped with it.
  • If you can’t see yourself getting out of ketosis and having a more balanced-type plate instead of this high fat, moderate protein, low carb plate.
  • Take a break from being on keto:
  • If that symptom relief that you experienced at the beginning of doing keto has now gone away and you don’t feel quite as good as you did when you started keto.
  • If new problems arise after having healed what you were trying to heal with keto.
  • If you are keto but all of a sudden you start having cravings for sugar or other poor food choices.
  • If you’re losing stamina, strength or power in your workouts.
  • If you’re losing muscle mass.
  • If you’re feeling over-restricted.
  • If you’re getting triggered into a diet mentality.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

As always, if you have any questions, be on the lookout for the Keto Hot Seat call for questions on Facebook and Instagram. Make sure your questions are short, general, and that you haven’t heard the answer to them before.

Take care!

Shawn said:

“You’re not doing anything wrong, you’re not harming yourself if you intuitively feel like it’s the right time to come out of ketosis for a period of time. It’s okay. It’s totally cool.”

“Eating the foods that are available to you almost naturally puts you into a more cyclical ketogenic diet. And by cyclical, I don’t mean like week by week but more season by season, almost. And that’s something really powerful, too.”

Keto and Mitochondrial Health + Energy Work with Dr. Lisa Koche MD -- #074
55:15

What are the mitochondria and how does keto help with mitochondrial biogenesis? The founder and medical director of Spectra Wellness Solutions, Dr. Lisa Saff Koche, talks about the benefits of the ketogenic diet when it comes to enhancing mitochondrial function.

Visit http://www.shawnmynar.com/ketoforwomen/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

Topics Discussed in this Episode:

  • Lisa’s personal health journey and what got her on the keto path
  • How the mitochondria works
  • What can go wrong with our mitochondria
  • What the ketogenic diet can do for our mitochondria
  • Energy work and how important it is to an all-encompassing holistic health plan
  • How to tell if you need to work on your energy fields

Key Takeaways:

  • We need good-functioning mitochondria in order to feel energized and have all the processes in our body systems work.
  • The organs that demand the most amount of energy such as the brain, the heart, the detox organs like the kidney and the liver, and the ovaries have more mitochondria in each cell.
  • Being in a ketogenic state and having higher levels of ketones seems to have a potent anti-inflammatory impact through different signaling molecules and directly signal the body to make new mitochondria.
  • If you look inside the mitochondria when we’re using fat as fuel instead of carbohydrates and glucose, the internal free radical production that can cause mitochondrial death is dramatically decreased.
  • We not only have a physical body but an energy body as well.
  • Acupuncture is probably the most well-known energy technique.
  • Our energy field also needs to be cared for and optimized.

Action Steps:

  • Consider working with a chiropractor and an acupuncturist to optimize your energy field and address health problems.
  • Get exposed to the sun in the mornings and do grounding.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

This Holiday Season, I am giving the option to gift The Fat Burning Female Project so you can now put it on your wishlist! Or you can give it to someone you know would love to receive it! Stay tuned in the coming weeks for more details.

As always, if you have any questions, be on the lookout for the Keto Hot Seat call for questions on Facebook and Instagram. Make sure your questions are short, general, and that you haven’t heard the answer to them before.

Take care!

Lisa said:

“[Ketones] is a cleaner fuel source in every way… You just have more bang for your buck, basically, utilizing ketones as fuel over carbohydrates.”

“When you do trigger mitochondrial biogenesis… you have to also clear the old out of the way, too. So it’s like you’re almost rebuilding your body completely from the inside out.”

Keto Hot Seat: Not Being Obsessive With Keto, How To Spot Inflammation, Supplements For Estrogen Dominance, Gaining Muscle, + SO MUCH MORE! -- #073
59:01

Welcome to another Keto Hot Seat episode! We are on another round of questions from the latest batch of Keto Hot Seat questions and I’m sure that you’re just as eager as I am to get to each one of them! As I said before, anything that gets us to the healthiest, happiest place that we can be is going to be good, so enjoy!

Visit http://www.shawnmynar.com/ketoforwomen/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

Keto Hot Seat Questions Answered in This Episode:

  • How can you do keto without being obsessive about it?
  • Can you recommend any pre-workout and post-workout drinks or powders that are sweetened naturally and don’t have a ton of artificial colors and dyes?
  • Does it matter how much stevia we put in our coffee?
  • What does it mean when you’re on keto but have a low reading of T3?
  • How do you know if you have inflammation?
  • Should you worry about your glucose being too low when you’re on keto?
  • Should you use DIM to address estrogen dominance only for certain days of the month?
  • Why is the ketosis magic number 0.5 and above?
  • What could possibly be wrong when you’re in ketosis but still have high testosterone levels?
  • What can I do to lose weight when I still haven’t lost weight even after being on keto for five months?
  • How can you tell the difference between extra fat that is hanging around due to healing that still needs to occur versus where your body naturally healthfully wants to be?
  • Is it common to have a dip in your ketone levels during the three days before your period starts?
  • If hair loss is triggered by events two to three months prior, does that mean improvements will also take that long to be seen as well?
  • After you’ve lost all the fat you’ve wanted to lose, is there a way that you can be keto and gain muscle mass?
  • Can keto work for endurance athletes?

Key Takeaways:

  • The emotional and mental patterns that we have around our food choices is something that’s been ingrained in us and something that we really need to change by working on our mindsets and how we perceive ourselves.
  • There are a lot of people who are obsessed with keto but there’s really nothing to be obsessed about it.
  • There is no real need for either a pre-workout or a post-workout drink. Whatever you’re trying to gain from such drinks would better be gotten from real food.
  • There’s a big difference in the quality between a packet of stevia in powder form versus organic stevia that comes in liquid form because there is a really good possibility that manufacturers add in other types of chemical sweeteners to stevia in granulated form,  and they can do so without even having to put it on the label.
  • Inflammation is not only located in your gut. You can have systemic inflammation as well as inflammation in other body parts.
  • One of the best indicators of inflammation is feeling puffy or water-retained.
  • Estrogen dominance happens when you are producing an excess level of estrogen or a low level of progesterone or both, that causes the relationship between those two hormones to be out of balance.
  • Having low levels of progesterone is more common than having excess levels of estrogen.
  • There are many possible reasons as to why you may not be getting into ketosis besides food, such as past blood sugar issues, a high or low stress response, not sleeping well, not drinking enough water and having irregular bowel movements.
  • If you build muscle, you will lose the fat you want to lose. It’s just how the body works.

Action Steps:

  • If you want to do keto right without ending up being obsessive about it, I highly recommend that you join the Fat Burning Female Project.
  • Choose the organic liquid form of stevia instead of the powder form.
  • If you are having a sluggish liver or if you’re not detoxing appropriately, consider taking DIM to help with your estrogen dominance.
  • To gain muscle mass, increase your protein, increase your carbohydrates, stay in ketosis and do workouts that involve weight-bearing exercises.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

As always, if you have any questions, be on the lookout for the next Keto Hot Seat call for questions on Facebook and Instagram. Make sure your questions are short, general, and that you haven’t heard the answer to them before.

Take care!

Shawn said:

“It’s possible to be keto and not be obsessed with it. And really, that’s the best way to go. But you’ve got to start with some bare-bones stuff first.”

“Once you’re there and you have that mentality of just wanting to be happy and balanced and healthy, then you’ll feel it. You’ll feel it when it’s there.”

How do you manage stress? What types of tests do you need to get done to keep tabs on your health? And why are connections so important? In this episode, I wrap up the ten things that I do to stay healthy. Enjoy!

Visit http://www.shawnmynar.com/ketoforwomen/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

Topics Discussed in this Episode:

  • Numbers 6 through 10 of the ten things that I do to stay healthy
  • Stress management, relief, and self-care
  • The importance of having connections
  • Keeping tabs on yourself
  • The tests that you need to get done
  • Getting outside help to maintain your health
  • The mental state of always being happy and always seeking for that happiness

Key Takeaways:

  • Taking a bath is a really great self-care tool while, at the same time, it puts you in this awesome state of parasympathetic mode, so you’re basically killing two birds with one stone.
  • There is something that goes on deep in our bodies when we have connections with people and when we foster them.
  • Continuing your connections, making new connections, and putting some really good, solid, quality time and effort into those connections are what will keep you ‘humming’. They will raise your vibration if it’s at a low point or it will continue a high vibration if you already are at a higher point.
  • Having a strong connection with your partner is a huge piece to getting healthy and staying healthy.
  • If you don’t feel 100% healthy or 100% great, it’s worth it to find out why by working with a practitioner.

Action Steps:

  • Build a sense of awareness around your stress levels and start noticing how often you are in the sympathetic versus the parasympathetic mode.
  • Have tools in place to manage your stress.
  • When you’re doing stress management and you’re using the tools that work for you, have that also be a time of self-care.
  • Make sure to spend quality time with your family and with your partner.
  • Build a team around you that will help you to stay healthy, that knows your body, knows what you’ve been working on and that you can trust.
  • Make the conscious choice and effort to be as happy as you can as much of the day as you can.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

I just created a new class called the Better Blood Sugar Project, and it’s something really simple and fun! So if you have already been through the Fat Burning Female Project, go get a spot in the Better Blood Sugar Project. And if you haven’t gone through that yet, then this is definitely something to keep in mind when the next Fat Burning Female Project opens in January.

Unrestricted Keto, Non-Toxic Living, Sauna Therapy: The Top 10 Things I Do To Stay Healthy - Part 2 -- #071
01:12:40

What if you’ve gotten to a place where you’re the healthiest you’ve ever been in your entire life? What would you do to maintain it? In Part 2 of my health story, I continue to share the 10 things that I do to stay healthy.

Visit http://www.shawnmynar.com/ketoforwomen/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

Topics Discussed in this Episode:

  • What I’ve done in the past 6 months and the markers I looked at
  • Getting to my happy weight
  • Five out of the ten things that I do to stay healthy
  • What my keto looks like for me
  • Why we should invest in fitness and moving our body
  • How we can switch to non-toxic living
  • The near infrared sauna and the benefits of sauna therapy
  • How I managed my stress and changed my mindset

Key Takeaways:

  • You should know exactly why you are not losing weight because you know so much more about your body and your health status.
  • You can’t start producing ketones and expect all your health issues to just magically disappear. That is a very long-term health goal to have ketones running through your blood for an extended period of time.
  • Do not approach fitness as a tool to lose weight but approach it from the perspective of recognizing it as a necessary vital piece to you and your health status in the future.
  • Reducing your EMF exposure is a top priority for healthy living.

Action Steps:

  • Keep track of your health records. Take a look at what your health was like a few years ago in comparison to now.
  • Make sure you’re getting your yearly checkups and compare because it will make you feel really good about what you’re doing.
  • Challenge yourself to move your body in different ways. Do it for your health, your future health, and aging gracefully.
  • Find ways to switch to non-toxic living.
  • Make journaling, meditation, visualization, and practice of gratitude into your habits.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

I am super excited to be nominated for Best Keto Podcast in the 2018 Keto Awards hosted by the Keto Summit. If you truly believe that this is indeed the best keto podcast, then go and vote for me here. Any support that you can give me is truly appreciated.

As always, if you have any questions, be on the lookout for the Keto Hot Seat call for questions on Facebook and Instagram. Make sure your questions are short, general, and that you haven’t heard the answer to them before.

Take care!

Shawn said:

“You as your own individual person just doing your own health journey and doing your own thing, you have a responsibility to some degree to start spreading that health message, too… We still have a responsibility to share what we know and to provide insight to other people.”

“Do not let your thoughts and your emotions in your brain spiral out of control. Just get them out before that happens because that’s really important to increasing your health status, to not let things fester in your body.”

My Full Health Story + The 10 Things I Do To Stay Healthy Now: Part 1 -- #070
01:01:26

Have you heard the story about my health journey before? I am telling it again in detail so that those of you who are experiencing similar things can get the help that you need. Plus I also talk about the 10 things that I do to maintain my health now that I’ve reached this level of health in my life.

Visit http://www.shawnmynar.com/ketoforwomen/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

Topics Discussed in this Episode:

  • My full health story
  • Mold disease or Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome and its symptoms
  • The 10 things I do to maintain my health
  • What my keto looks like for me
  • What it takes to be healthy besides keto

Key Takeaways:

  • When you do the autoimmune protocol, you’re basically paleo but then you also take out nightshade vegetables, nuts and seeds, eggs, and some other things from your diet.
  • 24% of the population has a genetic mutation that does not let your body detox from biotoxin illnesses like mold and Lyme disease.
  • The best way to start fasting is by being already fat-adapted, by producing ketones, getting into that ketone adaptation phase and working to let the body know that it could use fat as fuel during the period of fasting.
  • Your body will tell you what you need. When you listen to that and make that your priority, that’s when things will start falling into place.
  • There is no keto rule that you need to follow so strictly that it takes control of your food or your life or your happiness. All you need to do is learn how to eat intuitively.

Action Steps:

  • If you think that mold might be an issue for you, go find someone that specializes in treating mold and get treated appropriately. Otherwise, you will spend years chasing the tail of something you can never get control over. All you have to do is Google ‘Shoemaker Protocol’ or ‘mold doctor’ in your area, call and ask the receptionist if they have experienced treating mold patients and find the right person.
  • Break free from thinking of aesthetic goals when it comes to the food you’re putting on your plate and find food freedom.
  • Listen to your body when it comes to your meals and be intuitive with what you eat.
  • Flow with your own version of keto.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

There will be a Fat Burning Female Project 2.0 in January 2019. Until then, there will be no more classes offered within the year. If you want to join the project at that time, watch out for when the enrolment will be taking place. And if you want to get a jump start, The Fat Burning Female Self-Study is always an option for you. You can start on The Fat Burning Female Self-Study anytime and join the project later on in January.

As always, if you have any questions, be on the lookout for the Keto Hot Seat call for questions on Facebook and Instagram. Make sure your questions are short, general, and that you haven’t heard the answer to them before.

Take care!

Shawn said:

“Just focus on being happy and focus on being healthy. Use keto to do that. When you do that, you will feel such an immense sense of freedom around your food choices that it won’t matter what anyone else is doing or saying or feeling or showing you. You will just be doing YOU.”

“Get into ketosis, find what works for you to stay in ketosis, find what works for you to stay happy, and find what works for you to stay healthy, and just do that. And be fine with that changing every single day if that’s what your body is telling you it needs to do.”

Plant-Based Keto + Getting Rid Of Keto Dogma with Dr. Will Cole -- #069
58:49

What is a ketotarian? Functional medicine doctor, Will Cole, talks about a more plant-based approach to the ketogenic diet. Listen and see if the ketorarian way of living is for you. Enjoy!

Visit http://www.shawnmynar.com/ketoforwomen/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

Topics Discussed in this Episode:

  • Dr. Will Cole’s health journey
  • The ketotarian or plant-based approach to the ketogenic diet
  • The three ways you can go ketotarian
  • Why we don’t have to be afraid of eating vegetables when we’re on keto
  • Why we should consider removing dairy from our diet
  • Why we should make sure that the soy that we’re consuming is organic and non-GMO
  • When you should take supplements and the types of supplements you should take
  • Mistakes that people make when doing the ketogenic diet that we can improve upon

Key Takeaways:

  • Ketotarian is the amalgamation of the best of being plant-based and the best of being fat-adapted in nutritional ketosis and being a fat burner.
  • Food is primary. You cannot supplement your way out of a poor, crappy diet. However, a lot of people who just really want to be vegan are going to have to do some smart supplementation of fat-soluble vitamins and B vitamins and maybe iron.
  • Non-starchy fibrous vegetables are beneficial for the body and for ketosis. The fiber from plant foods helps produce butyrate, which is a relative of beta-hydroxybutyrate ketone and has the same functions.
  • Dairy is the gluten of the ketogenic world.
  • The most important part of being ketotarian is re-calibrating the conversations within the ketogenic community about giving your body grace, having a lightness to food again, and not being overly militant about it.

Action Steps:

  • If you’re not feeling optimal or if your lab results aren’t looking optimal or both, you have to realize what you have to do to be in alignment with your biochemistry.
  • Be open to bringing in certain foods to your diet for the sake of your health.
  • Be educated about wellness, not just about ketosis.
  • Listen to your body, and you can get the answers to what your body needs.
  • Try going ketotarian for eight weeks and see how it’s like and what it can do for you.

Take care!

Will said:

“This is really about loving your body enough to nourish it with good foods, loving your body enough to try things like intermittent fasting, to allow your body to heal. It’s reframing our relationship with our body, reframing our relationship with food.”

“To me, what I’m eating is a reflection of my own self-respect. And I think that self-care and food is part of that, is a form of self-respect. And that’s what I think a healthy ketogenic diet is, is a form of self-respect for your body and feeling great.”

Keto Hot Seat: Losing the last 10 lbs, body odor, "fluffy" cholesterol, out of control hunger, and much more! -- #068
59:11

Welcome to another edition of the Keto Hot Seat episode! We are on a brand new batch of Keto Hot Seat questions, and I can’t wait to get to each one of them! Anything that gets us to the healthiest, happiest place that we can get to is going to be good, so enjoy!

Visit http://www.shawnmynar.com/ketoforwomen/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

Keto Hot Seat Questions Answered in This Episode:

  • How do you know if your cholesterol is “fluffy”? What is considered a “low” HDL level?
  • How do you get the last 10 pounds off when you’ve been fat-adapted for over a year and trying super low carbs didn’t help, carnivore didn’t help and increasing carbs isn’t working?
  • What can you do when your hunger suddenly gets out of hand after you started taking a spore-based probiotic?
  • What is your top favorite keto meal?
  • What do you need to know about body odor when you’re on keto?
  • Why should you eat breakfast instead of relying on bulletproof coffee?
  • What are some tips specific to perimenopausal women or women with other dysregulation who’s current diet is no longer working and who are gaining weight rapidly?
  • When you are 65, been through menopause and have the typical hot flashes and vaginal thinning and dryness that seems to go with age, what are the other options instead of using a bioidentical hormone? Is natural hormone balance possible after menopause?
  • Why do you get eczema outbreaks after going on keto?
  • What is your go-to restaurant meal when on vacation?
  • What are different tests for food sensitivities, and which ones are good to do?

Key Takeaways:

  • When you have excess weight beyond where your body is comfortable and happy, then that is a symptom of something deeper going on that’s keeping your health out of balance.
  • New information comes out daily about the importance of having a nice, healthy, balanced microbiome, and when you start taking probiotics, it really starts changing and regulating other things in your body.
  • If you’re new to keto and you’re maybe kind of going through the keto flu and you notice a change in your body odor, that is basically a sign that you’re producing ketones and you’re excreting acetone through your sweat. That eventually goes away as you become keto-adapted.
  • There’re so many other factors that you need to look at other than diet when you’re not losing weight. You can’t just be upset with your body and upset with your diet and getting all frustrated about why it’s not working out for you.
  • Going on keto often brings up other health issues that need to be addressed.
  • No food sensitivity test is going to be 100% accurate. There’s always room for error and the tests aren’t 100% foolproof.

Action Steps:

  • Take away the labels you put on food. Keto is a type of diet or a type of lifestyle. It’s not a label of a food and it shouldn’t be.
  • If you’re really concerned about your cholesterol and you have a history of heart disease in your family, try getting an NMR test, and keep the ratio of your triglycerides to HDL ratio as close to 1 as possible.
  • Make sure you are providing your body with a sufficient amount of nutrients, and consider cutting back your fasting if you’re fasting 36 hours a week.
  • If you have issues with body odor, it could be because of a mineral imbalance, so you need to work harder to balance your electrolytes. Or it could be because of a magnesium deficiency, so you need to increase your magnesium.
  • Look to detoxifying your liver using real food like leafy greens, bitter greens, root vegetables, and citrus.
  • Get your hormones tested to see if you have a hormonal balance that’s causing you to not lose weight. From there, speak with someone that can help you take those results and put you on a protocol to balance them.
  • If you are postmenopausal, find a practitioner in your area that can help you have a great postmenopause experience.
  • If you are having issues with eczema, get your gut health tested, and find out what you need to work on with the help of a functional practitioner.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

As always, if you have any questions, be on the lookout for the next Keto Hot Seat call for questions on Facebook and Instagram. Make sure your questions are short, general, and that you haven’t heard the answer to them before.

Take care!

Shawn said:

“When we have labels on food, then that will kind of keep us in this place of can/can’t, should/shouldn’t, do/don’t… where our foods are classified almost as ‘yes, this is okay,’ or ‘no, this is not.’ So when we call a food keto, that’s going to bring in that type of mentality.”

“There are so many more things that you need to take charge of in your life to truly understand what’s going on in your body and why you are gaining weight… diet has very little to do with it.”

Body Neutrality + Emotional Eating with Stephanie Dodier, CNP -- #067
01:02:57

How do you view your body and how do you feel about it? My good friend Stephanie Dodier is back in the podcast and we talk about body image, the stories we tell ourselves about our bodies and making that huge shift in perspective towards body neutrality.

Visit http://www.shawnmynar.com/ketoforwomen/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

Topics Discussed in this Episode:

  • What builds our food behavior
  • How a negative body image could lead to emotional eating
  • Body neutrality vs body positivity
  • How to get to that place of body acceptance
  • The fundamentals of Health at Every Size
  • The reason why you can’t stick with the keto diet

Key Takeaways:

  • Think of your food behavior as like the top of a funnel, and below that are the things that fuel it. Not only the actual food, quality of food and intake of sugar contribute to your food behavior but also things like your thoughts, your mindset, your perspective, your relationship with your body, how you value your body, your body image, your story, your trauma, etc.
  • When you shamed your body your whole life, not liking your body becomes so deeply rooted in your subconscious that you can’t just suddenly turn on a switch and start loving your body.
  • Body neutrality is about accepting the current state of your body without judgment and using compassion to engage with your body, like being grateful for it.
  • Women who struggle with body image also have this belief that they need to be perfect. ‘Perfection’ is linked to low self-worth and low self-esteem.
  • If you’ve been keto-ing hard and it still doesn’t work, maybe it’s time for you to go beyond the food and look at your thoughts and reconcile with your body.

Action Steps:

  • Release your expectations of losing weight when doing keto. Instead, strive for health.
  • Get in front of a mirror and start engaging with your body. Observe your thoughts and switch them from judgment to gratefulness. Be compassionate.
  • Put in perspective the reason why you want to lose weight.
  • As you reacquaint with your body, it’s going to feel uncomfortable, but just ride the wave of your emotion.
  • Look at what drives your food behavior beyond food.
    • Look at your thoughts. Are your thoughts negative? Are they stressful? Are they driving the behavior of stress eating?
    • Look at your mindset. Do you come from a place of lack or a place of abundance?
    • Look at your story around food. Were you drilled from a young age that a woman has to suffer to be beautiful, that you to be on a diet, or that you can’t eat too much in front of people? And how much are you reacting to that until today?

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

As always, if you have any questions, be on the lookout for the Keto Hot Seat call for questions on Facebook and Instagram. Make sure your questions are short, general, and that you haven’t heard the answer to them before.

Take care!

Stephanie said:

“Obesity is not a disease. Obesity is a symptom that your body is gaining or keeping fat on for a reason. You don’t catch the virus of obesity or the bacteria of obesity. You become obese because there’s something underneath that drives that behavior of intaking too much food…”

“At the end of the day, know one thing, you will be successful when you come from a place of love, not from a place of hatred or fear. So no matter what choice you make, make a choice that's based on love towards yourself, not fear or hatred.”

My 7-Day Carnivore Experiment -- #066
01:07:46

Would you ever try giving the carnivore diet a shot? What are some of the benefits that you can get out of it? In this episode, I share the results of my journey through seven days of being a carnivore and my thoughts on the experiment. Plus, I will get through some of the Keto Hot Seat questions that I received by email.

Visit http://www.shawnmynar.com/ketoforwomen/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

Topics Discussed in this Episode:

  • What my 7-day carnivore experiment looked like
  • The good things I experienced as a result of going carnivore
  • Getting back to intuitive eating
  • Why we should eat more protein
  • Why you should try going carnivore

Keto Hot Seat Questions Answered in This Episode:

  • How can you feel better endurance-wise with your workouts?
  • Should you look at your calories or just go by how your body feels?
  • What can you do to avoid getting dizzy when doing an intense workout in the morning without food?
  • Is it true that strenuous exercise causes your body to release cortisol (which is a bad thing if you have PCOS and if your hormones are already imbalanced)?
  • If you’re out and about, traveling, and need some food and only have access to convenience stores, what keto snacks should you get?
  • What can you do when you’re having a hard time getting into ketosis?
  • Is it possible to develop food sensitivities as you get more and more keto adapted?
  • How come some people may not have perfect blood glucose numbers even though they are on strict keto?

Key Takeaways:

  • Vegetables are a great source of the micronutrients that many of us are deficient in, but so are good high-quality meat. 100% grass fed, grass finished beef, wild caught fish, pasture-raised pork, pasture-raised chicken, and pasture-raised eggs are also very rich in the micronutrients that you need.
  • Because meat is easier to digest than vegetables most of the time, it’s also easier for us to absorb the nutrients found in meat than in vegetables.
  • Intuitive eating is a practice. It’s something that you have to monitor and occasionally get a grip on.
  • Amino acids are builders and maintainers of our muscles, and so taking more of it will help our metabolism. The more muscles you have, the higher your metabolism will be because you need more energy to sustain those muscle versus fat.

Action Steps:

  • Make sure that you’re getting good, high-quality meat.
  • Increase the protein in your diet.
  • Try going carnivore yourself and make it a good learning experience.
  • Make sure that part of your intuitive eating plan is to fully nourish your body.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The September class of The Fat Burning Female Project is well underway, but The Fat Burning Female Self-Study is always open as an option for you if that’s something that you want to get into.

As always, if you have any questions, be on the lookout for the Keto Hot Seat call for questions on Facebook and Instagram. Make sure your questions are short, general, and that you haven’t heard the answer to them before.

Take care!

Shawn said:

“That is the best feeling, to not be bloated. To be able to eat a meal and not feel like your shirt got tighter or smaller in the process… to not have that feeling after a meal is pretty spectacular.”

“Part of intuitive eating is that you’re listening to your body but you’re also knowing your body’s needs. And your body needs enough food. So knowing that, and knowing that’s a big piece of being intuitive and wanting to get healthy is fueling yourself appropriately.”

Going Carnivore + Time-Restricted Eating with Vanessa Spina -- #065
53:14

Have you ever tried going carnivore, or wondered what it would be like? Satisfy your curiosity as my friend, biohacker Vanessa Spina, talks about her zero-carb carnivore diet experiment and what the experience has been like for her. She also talks about fasting and time-restricted eating and the benefits that we can get from doing them.

Visit http://www.shawnmynar.com/ketoforwomen/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

Topics Discussed in this Episode:

  • What inspires Vanessa to do experiments and challenge the rules
  • What Vanessa’s zero-carb carnivore experiment looked like
  • Getting into a place of intuitiveness and learning what it means to be satisfied
  • Getting your micronutrients from meat versus getting them from plant foods
  • Using the zero-carb carnivore diet as an elimination diet and getting rid of bloating
  • The benefits of time-restricted eating and fasting between meals

Key Takeaways:

  • Doing the carnivore diet is basically just eating anything from the animal kingdom including dairy and eggs.
  • When you eat just meat, you get full and satiated really quickly but without the stomach stretch.
  • There’s a theory by Dr. Ted Naiman that cravings in the evening time can come from inadequate protein during the day.
  • You can get most if not all of your micronutrients from meat, but there’s no real valid reason for anyone to exclude plant foods in their diet.
  • You don’t want to eat too much meat, but eating too little protein is not going to be helpful for your body either. Out of all the macronutrients that you need, protein is the most important in terms of essential amino acids.
  • The only food that no one seems to be allergic to or have an intolerance to is meat.
  • If you feel like having a snack at any point during the day, it means that you probably didn’t eat enough food at one of your meals.
  • Fasting shouldn’t be something that’s forced but something that naturally occurs. And it’s easy to do when you’re well-fed.

Action Steps:

  • Eat intuitively. This means eat when you’re hungry, eat until you’re full, and then stop.
  • Consider using the zero-carb carnivore diet as an elimination diet.
  • Practice time-restricted eating and fasting between meals. When you’re eating, make your meals count by making them full of nutrients so that you’re getting what your body needs and you can go for longer periods of time in-between meals without snacks.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Be on the lookout for next week’s episode where I share my own experience of going carnivore. I’m going to be talking about what I felt, what I ate, what I suggest doing, any tips and tricks that I have, who it would be good for, who it wouldn’t be good for, et cetera. So make sure you don’t miss that episode when it drops!

You can also check out my Instagram and Facebook stories for everything that I’m eating on my carnivore diet.

As always, if you have any questions, be on the lookout for the Keto Hot Seat call for questions on Facebook and Instagram. You can also email me with “Keto Hot Seat” as your headline and I will make sure to get the answers out to you.

Take care!

Vanessa said:

“The best thing that has come out of this zero-carb carnivore trend has been getting people to question more their protein levels and maybe eat more protein and play around with it. And I think that that’s the same thing for anything.”

“The grazing and what I call nursing, like drinking beverages, and snacking throughout the day, it really comes because there is a lack of those essential fatty acids and amino acids being met at meal times. And so the body is just constantly craving [food] all throughout the day.”

Why You Can't Stick With Keto, Fasting After A Workout, Constipation Help, Optimal Blood Sugar Readings -- #064
58:50

We are having the last round of the Keto Hot Seat episodes since I called out for questions a couple of months ago, and I’m happy to finally get to answer all of them! There’s always so much to learn and discover when it comes to keto and women’s health. Enjoy!

Visit http://www.shawnmynar.com/ketoforwomen/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

Keto Hot Seat Questions Answered in This Episode:

  • What do you recommend when someone has all the knowledge about keto but can’t seem to get started and stay consistent?
  • What types of supplements do you take to help while in ketosis?
  • What are the ways to get high fat?
  • Is keto a good fit for you if you have hypothyroidism?
  • What are your thoughts on drinks that people use to get them into ketosis?
  • When should you take readings with your keto and blood glucose meter and what ranges should your be looking at from a therapeutic perspective for epilepsy?
  • What causes the dawn effect (a good HbA1c but with higher fasting glucose)?
  • How can you figure out what’s causing your inflammation after making changes in your diet and being on keto for about a month?
  • Are there side effects you should worry about when taking bioidentical progesterone?
  • How do I keep from getting candida or something else after having to take a round of antibiotics for an infection?
  • What can you do when you’re already in ketosis but still don’t feel fat-adapted and still low in energy? How can you get from ketosis to fully fat-adapted?
  • Is it safe to go in and out of ketosis?
  • What are the optimal blood sugar readings?
  • Is it okay to fast for 6 to 8 hours after a workout? And is it better to work out on a fasted state?
  • What makes you get back into ketosis after eating something non-keto fast?
  • Does constipation cause weight gain? What can you do to have a regular bowel movement? Does taking MCT help?

Key Takeaways:

  • If you can’t stick with something that you know is healthy when building health for yourself, then it’s time for you to start digging a bit deeper into your mental and emotional space.
  • It’s important to remember to not only test your fasting blood sugar and determine whether you have blood sugar issues based on that number, especially if you’re in ketosis.  If you truly want to know your blood sugar, you should always test one hour after a meal and two hours after a meal.
  • When you work out, the goal is always to get the best workout possible.
  • If your goal is to lose fat and increase your metabolism, fasting and working out is not a good combination to achieve that.
  • One of the many causes of constipation is our emotions. We hold a lot of emotion in our gut -- stress, fear, sadness, loneliness, things that we as women feel strongly and deeply.

Action Steps:

  • Continue to go back to your bigger why and remember what it is that you’re here to do and what you’re trying to use keto to bring you.
  • Use your meat and your vegetables as a vehicle for fat, and add more sauces, mayonnaise, dressings, and stuff like that to your food to get higher fat.
  • Take probiotics regularly to support your gut health.

  • Stop listening to other people telling you to do something for your body when they don’t know your body.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

As always, if you have any questions that you would like for me to answer, be on the lookout for the Keto Hot Seat call for questions on Facebook and Instagram. You can also email me your questions with “Keto Hot Seat” as your headline and I will make sure to get the answers out to you.

Take care!

Shawn said:

“There’s very few people on this planet that don’t need to take a probiotic all the time... It’s just the way our world is working these days. We have a lot of things that are fighting and winning with our gut bacteria so we just really have to supplement with that on the regular.”

“The problem with the keto community is there’s way too much information that’s not talking about you and your body. It’s talking about them and their body, and then everyone takes it as gospel and we all get really confused. And it doesn’t have to be that hard.”

5 Steps To Finding YOUR Version Of Keto -- #063
58:14

Why is it important to find YOUR version of keto, and how? This topic is actually the talk that I gave at the last KetoCon back in June 2018 and I’m bringing it to you right here in this podcast! Learn more about the keto lifestyle and some tips on how you can make it work for you!

Visit http://www.shawnmynar.com/ketoforwomen/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

Topics Discussed in this Episode:

  • My story before and after keto
  • The keto diet vs the keto lifestyle
  • What happens when you do the keto lifestyle
  • The 5 steps to finding YOUR right version of keto
  • My keto lifestyle tips

Key Takeaways:

  • If you’re doing the keto diet, you are following someone else’s rules, restrictions, calculations, and meals, so it isn’t going to do anything for YOU.
  • You aren’t really tapping into your body when you are following a diet. You are focusing on one arbitrary goal, and focusing on what the scale is telling you.
  • When you’re doing the keto lifestyle, you’re taking charge of your health. You’re not just focusing on one arbitrary goal but on bigger health-related goals.
  • The ketogenic lifestyle leads to food freedom.
  • A lot of great things can happen for you when you break up with your app and all these tracking and calculations that you do with your food. Not only is it taking away from other pleasures in life but it’s also keeping you from being able to get into the keto lifestyle.
  • Know that keto perfection does not exist. So don’t try to be keto perfect, just try to be in the right space for you.

Action Steps:

  • Go from saying keto diet to keto lifestyle.
  • 5 Steps To Finding YOUR Version Of Keto
  1. Find your bigger why. Ask yourself these questions: How do you want to feel? How do you want to act? How do you want to move? And how do you want to live?
  2. Keep a journal. Gather information about your body and how it responds to different things.
  3. Utilize your ketone readings.
  4. Break up with tracking apps and calculating. Instead, build your perfect plate of food and use that as your anchor.
  5. Enjoy your keto lifestyle and thrive.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

I will be running only one more Fat Burning Female Project for 2018, and that’s the September class. So if you’ve ever wanted to be a Fat Burning Female, grab this chance to get in the project at its current price before I make any changes to the program and the price in 2019. The one-day enrollment will be on September 4. Sign up to get notified as soon as enrollment opens.

If you would rather do The Fat Burning Female Self-Study, that is always going to be available and you can get started on it anytime.

I will also be doing another Keto for Hormones Webinar coming up on August 31 at 11 a.m. MST. It’s completely free, so if you want to be a part of that, you can register here.

Take care!

Shawn said:

“The thing that takes keto from a diet to a lifestyle is all about YOU. It’s YOU wanting and realizing the need to make that change... YOU making that step, YOU taking the action, YOU listening to your body, YOU taking the time, but then YOU also letting go and living life.”

“Food is not a math equation. It is nourishment for our bodies and nutrients to stay strong and healthy and alive, and pleasure. You should enjoy what you eat as well.”

Are You Doing Everything You Need to Do to Find Your Happy Weight? -- #062
01:03:44

You can’t just be keto and expect everything else to fall into place. There is so much more to your health and happiness journey. Today, we go beyond keto with Daniele Della Valle to see what else is out there. Find out what more needs to be done in order to truly get to your place of health and happiness.

Visit http://www.shawnmynar.com/ketoforwomen/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

Topics Discussed in this Episode:

  • Why ‘skinny’ doesn’t mean ‘healthy’
  • Why it’s so much more important to focus on healing your body than to just focus on losing weight
  • How to get started on that path to finding your happy weight
  • Why working with an NTP is really important
  • What society is telling us about health
  • What self-love means and tips on self-love practices that women should do

Key Takeaways:

  • It doesn’t matter if your body changes in how it looks, what matters is what’s going on internally.
  • You have to alter your environment in order to alter your mental state.
  • Bodies can change, they can fluctuate throughout time, but we have to be proud of our body no matter what size it is.
  • If we don’t think of this as a mental health journey as much as it is a physiological health journey, then the delineation is what gets us completely off track.
  • When we’re so focused on a number on the scale, that number becomes the goal instead of focusing on losing the toxins that are in the body.
  • If we take a more scientific approach to our health, it’s to focus on the things that are actual tangible goals. It’s a completely different approach that we could take that helps us to understand how the mechanism is actually working.
  • If we don’t have a grasp of the mechanism, then we give that number on the scale power. It controls us. It is our bearer of truth when there is actually no truth in that.
  • You have an opportunity to change the life around you so that you don’t have to feel like weight loss is your only goal in life.

Action Steps:

  • Focus on being healthy. Take your hormone tests every three to six months and your vitamin/mineral tests and heavy metal toxicity test, and focus on the results.
  • Get rid of your scale if you know that you have an unhealthy relationship with it.
  • Confront the people that you have unhealthy conversations with and set boundaries.
  • Look at yourself naked in the mirror and think about the thoughts and emotions that come up to you at that moment. What are you thinking? Are you saying terrible things to yourself or are you saying kind things? And would you say the same things to other people?
  • Elevate to your true self. Get your toe wet into change and self-care. Find what you really, actually like.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

I will be running only one more Fat Burning Female Project for 2018, and that’s the September class coming very soon. So if you’ve ever wanted to be a Fat Burning Female, grab this chance to get in the project at its current price instead of the new price in 2019. The one-day enrollment will be on September 4, so mark your calendars and sign up to get notified by email as soon as enrollment opens.

I will also be doing another webinar coming up on August 31 at 11 a.m. MST. It’s completely free, so if you want to be a part of that, stay tuned for more information on how to sign up.

As always, if you have any questions that you would like for me to answer, be on the lookout for the Keto Hot Seat call for questions on Facebook and Instagram. You can also email me your questions at info@ketoforwomenshow.com with “Keto Hot Seat” as your headline and I will make sure to get the answers out to you.

Take care!

Daniele said:

“The problem is that we get so focused on the way our body looks that we normalize mental health issues and we normalize endocrine collapse... And so that’s the messed up part of our culture is that we actually let our bodies fall apart because we’re so focused on that number.”

“True body love is loving every aspect of your body… that’s the goal that we should be trying to reach, is being able to tap into ourselves and absolutely have that connection to listen to our body and know what it needs instead of determining our day by stepping on that scale.

Keto Hot Seat: Fasting Lowering Metabolism, Low Morning Ketones, Fruit on Keto, Heart Palpitations, Ulcerative Colitis, Dairy, Getting Your Period Back -- #061
58:43

We’ve got a fully packed Keto Hot Seat episode today! There are still so many questions left from when I called out for questions a couple of months ago, and I can’t wait to get through each one of them! It’s very much off the cuff, so think of it as me answering your questions while we’re having coffee together. Enjoy!

Visit http://www.shawnmynar.com/ketoforwomen/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

Keto Hot Seat Questions Answered in This Episode:

  • How is it possible to get rid of lactose intolerance by going on keto?
  • Is dairy, besides butter and heavy whipping cream, considered a good and healthy source of fat?
  • How does being on an antidepressant affect the results of a keto diet?
  • How does a hormonal IUD affect the hormone-balancing process of keto?
  • Is getting really cold on fasting days a sign that your metabolism is slowing?
  • How can you use keto to heal ulcerative colitis?
  • Is the keto diet good for SIBO?
  • Is incorporating keto meals into a family beneficial or harmful for those in the family that are not going low-carb but are now being served fattier meals?
  • What macros are more successful for a leaner body composition?
  • Is it a bad idea to start keto a week before a stem cell therapy procedure?
  • What is the role of PCOS in hypoglycemia and fatty liver? What if you have PCOS and still can’t lose much weight after four months on keto?
  • Is there a point where you should stop keto and just say that this isn’t working for you right now, or is there more I can do?
  • What are some tips for managing symptoms of Hashimoto’s such as muscle weakness and fatigue?
  • What can you do for eye pain, which may be linked to omega-6 intake?
  • Are heart palpitations normal at the start of a transition to keto?
  • What should you do when you wake up every morning out of ketosis? Could that be the reason for your lack of weight loss?
  • How can you get rid of candida?
  • Is there a benefit of going from straight keto to a little more carbs?
  • Would you recommend tubal ligation or Essure?
  • Should you eat more carbs to correct hypothalamic amenorrhea?
  • What should you if you still haven’t seen any increase in energy and brain clarity after being on keto for nine weeks?
  • When fasting for 18 to 20 hours, should you consume all blocks within the first four-hour eating window?

Key Takeaways:

  • There are a lot of people who assume that they do well with dairy, but in fact, they only appear to tolerate dairy because their immune system is working overtime to fight the symptoms of dairy sensitivity.
  • Most people don’t know how to be dairy-free keto, but it’s totally possible.
  • When you lower your stress, work on your gut health, and go keto for the inflammatory and immune system benefits, these three things are what can get you off medication for ulcerative colitis.
  • There is so much more to healing an autoimmune disease than just diet and making dietary changes.
  • Most gut health diets are actually somewhat ketogenic because they’re all low-carb.
  • If you have hormonal imbalances or if you have issues with your cycle when you transition to keto or while you’re in ketosis, you’re most likely stressing out your body.
  • Fatty fish should be a staple in your diet. Especially if you notice things happening when you’re getting more omega-6, you have to do your part to help your body out with that ratio.
  • The beauty of the ketogenic diet is that you can eat the foods that you crave and the foods that you want. Even though there are some carbs in there, even though it has fructose, you’re going to be just fine.

Action Steps:

  • Make sure that your dairy is 100% grass-fed and organic, and get the unpasteurized products.
  • Monitor the food that you’re eating to make sure that you’re not eating too much protein, which could potentially be keeping you out of ketosis.
  • If you haven’t already completely checked out every nook and cranny of your gut, and if you have an autoimmune disease, find a practitioner who does gut testing and get tested.
  • Give your body a break and find some time for yourself.
  • Do what you need to do to heal your gut.
  • Be on top of your omega-3 fats.
  • Supplement with electrolytes when you are transitioning into ketosis.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The next round of The Fat Burning Female Project is starting on September 10th, and enrollment will be on September 4th. So go ahead and mark your calendars if you want to join, or sign up to get notified by email as soon as enrolment opens.

I will also be doing another webinar on Why Keto is Different for Women coming up on August 31st. So if you want to be a part of that, stay tuned for more information on how to sign up for that.

Take care!

Shawn said:

“Keto is part of the process, it’s not all of the process… It’s an amazing adjunct to everything else that you are doing to become a truly healthy person, which should be a lot more. It should be more than just a diet. We so often only look at diet, and it’s only part of it.”

“To deprive yourself of something that you really, truly want, that this really healthy food from the earth, is just not the kind of diet I want anyone to be on, and not something I would ever promote. If keto looked like that, I would not promote it.”

01:02:50

Do you sometimes feel like you’re not doing keto correctly or that things aren’t going as well as you thought they would and you’re not feeling as great as you expected? If you are going through all kinds of health issues as though you’re caught in a cycle, it could be that you’re just keto-ing too hard, and that isn’t good for you. Let’s have a look at some of the signs that you’re trying too dang hard, and how you can do it right.

  • Don’t let keto take over everything in your life -- your thoughts, your time, your energy. Don’t let it be as much in the forefront as it may currently be for you. Otherwise, you’re just perpetuating the cycle of being unhealthy.
  • 22 Signs You’re Keto-ing Too Hard:
  1. You have an irregular menstrual cycle.
  2. You’re losing hair.
  3. You’re exhausted.
  4. You’re losing muscle mass and losing momentum in your workouts.
  5. Your thyroid markers are declining.
  6. You are weight loss resistant.
  7. You’re not sleeping.
  8. You’re irritable.
  9. You have no interest in sex.
  10. You are bloated or water-retained.
  11. You’re always hungry.

  13. You have cravings.
  14. You are having carb binges.
  15. All you think about is food.
  16. You think real food carbs are bad.
  17. You limit your veggie servings.
  18. You know exactly how many carbs and net carbs you eat every single day.
  19. You’re going through ketone test strips quicker than bacon strips.
  20. You’re doing everything “right” and still not in ketosis.
  21. You haven’t had a conversation with your family in months because you are too busy listening to keto podcasts.
  22. You don’t go to restaurants or social functions because you don’t know what you’ll eat.

Action Steps:

  • Watch out for the signs that you’re keto-ing too hard.
  • Realize when you may have to take a little step back from keto.
  • Stop overthinking about keto and overthinking about food.
  • Focus on your end goal. Remind yourself that what you’re actually trying to do is not just to be on keto or stay on keto but to get healthy and stay healthy.

“We all think about food way too much… but there is so much more to life. There’s just a lot of things that we could potentially be missing out on in life and living life to the fullest and enjoying every moment because we’re a little too focused on our food.”

“If you feel like you can’t live the life that you had prior to keto while being keto, you’re doing it too hard. You should never have to compromise your connections because of a diet of any sort… You should be able to do both.”

Keto For Mental Health With Carrie Brown -- #059
58:24

How can the ketogenic lifestyle help in dealing with mental health issues? If you’re curious about it, you’ve tuned in to the right podcast! Carrie Brown shares what it was like for her to grow up with a debilitating depression that later on diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and how she was able to turn that around through the ketogenic diet and lifestyle.

Visit http://www.shawnmynar.com/ketoforwomen/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

Topics Discussed in this Episode:

  • How the ketogenic lifestyle can help with mental health problems
  • The difference between bipolar disorder 1 and bipolar disorder 2
  • MTFHR and the symptoms it’s implicated with
  • The pain of healing and what you can do to help your body heal

Key Takeaways:

  • If you eat something constantly, that is often how you set up a sensitivity to it.
  • A lot of people report that switching to keto has really helped their depression.
  • Our diet and the chemicals in our food are a massive factor in the occurrence of mental health issues.
  • Healing can be painful, especially if you’re getting rid of years of toxic build-up.
  • You change as your body heals, so you should not think that what works for you now is going to work the same in six months.
  • Part of getting well is listening to your body and “seek the tweak”.
  • However good keto is, for some people there is something else that they need as well.

Action Steps:

  • Be your own advocate and find someone that you can trust to help you find what’s going on with your body and with your brain.
  • Get a genetic testing done.
  • If you are suicidal, get on a lower carb higher fat diet as you can.
  • If you are bipolar, go find somebody to help you. Don’t self-medicate.
  • Listen to your body and note when weird things happen.

“We’re no worse off genetically, but the way we live, the crap we eat, the chemicals we inhale, the things we’re doing to ourselves is switching on all the genetic markers. We’re just seeing the symptoms more because of the bad things we’re doing to ourselves.”

“If you feel like keto isn’t quite working for you like it magically seems to do for everybody else, it’s probably working as best as it can, but there’s probably an underlying thing that you need to figure out and fix before you can get the full benefits of keto.”

How I've Changed Keto For My Workouts + Keto Hot Seat Macros vs. Calories, Thyroid Concerns, Building Muscle -- #058
01:00:42

Visit http://www.shawnmynar.com/ketoforwomen/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

Welcome to another Keto Hot Seat episode! We have so many questions to get through, so I hope you’re just as eager as I am to get through them one by one. Also, find out what I have done recently to change my version of keto to what works best for me, and I hope that you can find what works best for you, too!

Keto Hot Seat questions answered in this episode:

  • Would keto be good for menopause the heavy joint inflammation?
  • Does keto cause anxiety when first getting into ketosis?
  • How do you discover how many carbs to eat on days when you go running?
  • What is the best thing to do to prepare to go keto when the timing is bad?
  • Does keto cause thyroid changes?
  • What causes your abdomen to look bloated or less defined when you’re doing keto? How do you build muscles on keto?
  • What should you tell your friend who says she can’t eat keto because she has a gallstone and she’s afraid to eat fat?
  • How can you increase your ketones to push into optimal ketosis?
  • Does MCT oil put you in a false ketosis like exogenous ketones do?
  • Should you stop lifting and cardio when trying to transition to keto? What type of workout should you do?
  • Is there a sweet spot for body fat percentage and hormones?
  • If your ratios are correct, do calories matter for weight loss?

Key Takeaways:

  • Every day of your keto journey is not going to be the same. It’s different every week and every month. The foods that you were eating, in the beginning, to get yourself into ketosis now might be totally different.
  • If you’re not technically in ketosis and you’re just doing really low carb without teaching your body how to use ketones or how to use fat as fuel, then your body going to freak out.
  • Studies show that being in a state of ketosis is really great for when you’re doing endurance type training, which includes running.
  • One of the quintessential signs that you are either in cortisol overproduction or in cortisol underproduction is weight gain around your midsection.
  • You can get into ketosis quicker if you do some high-intensity interval training while you’re making that transition into ketosis.
  • If you’re going to have a keto lifestyle that is balancing your body, healing your body, and getting you back to this place of ultimate health, then you need to know the macro calculations that work for you.

Action Steps:

  • Work on balancing your hormones through keto.
  • Make sure that you are actually in ketosis and eating enough fat to fuel your runs and workouts.
  • Keep your health at the forefront of the choices that you make.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

If you haven’t seen my video series called Keto Roadblocks yet, do check it out! If you’re someone who is already in ketosis but not experiencing the benefits of being in ketosis, you can go ahead and watch the videos, and I hope that you can gain more clarity and more reasons to look into your own body.

“Whatever your keto journey is, it’s all about finding what works for you… but also what works for you at that time and being flexible with what is going on in your life or your workouts or your stress level, your home life… taking that all into account and being fluid with it.”

“If you have found the keto that works for you, you are doing the ketogenic diet that is super nutrient dense with really, really good high-quality foods… then from there calories aren’t going to matter that much.”

Keto Hot Seat: Hashimoto's, Depression and Anxiety, Bio-Identical Hormones, Blood Tests to Get From Your Doctor -- #057
56:08

Visit http://www.shawnmynar.com/ketoforwomen/ for complete show notes of every podcast episode

Welcome to another edition of the Keto Hot Seat! It’s going to be another fun episode, full packed with information and answers to questions that you’re looking for. Enjoy!

Keto Hot Seat questions answered in this episode:

  • Can you supplement with glutamine while in ketosis?
  • What is the difference between food sensitivities and food allergies? How do you test for food sensitivities?
  • Should you take bio-identical progesterone or bio-identical hormones in general?
  • What lab tests should you ask for when you visit a doctor?
  • What are the pros and cons of fat bombs?
  • What can you do about keto rash?
  • When is the best time of the day to check ketones?
  • What are some of the misconceptions that people have about keto?
  • How can someone with a history of fibroids benefit from the keto lifestyle while also trying to conceive?
  • What is your take on fat fasting in the morning and then eating around noon?
  • How does changing to keto help with anxiety and depression?
  • What would be a suggested meal and timing for someone who works nights?
  • How can you get back to lifting after just becoming keto?
  • Would it be okay to eat soy products a few times a week?
  • What causes restless legs at night?

Key Takeaways:

  • People have more food sensitivities than they do allergies. So just because you’re not allergic to any food, it doesn’t mean you’re not sensitive to that food. And vice versa, just because you are sensitive to the food, it doesn’t mean you’re allergic to it.
  • A lot of times bio-identical hormones are used as a band-aid without looking deeper into what’s going on with your body. It’s supplementing what your body is not doing on its own instead of finding out why it’s not doing that on its own and working to heal that.
  • We really all should know our fasting insulin level because it’s one of the reasons why we struggle with keto even when we’re doing keto 100%. The reason why we don’t see weight loss or energy gain or mental clarity and other supposed benefits of keto is that even though our blood sugar levels are fine, our insulin levels are not.
  • Ketone production is amazing for the immune system, which is what will heal your autoimmune disease.
  • A lot of anxiety and depression and mood issues are tied to blood sugar response and caused by blood sugar swings. When our blood sugar balances out, our mood balances out, too.

Action Steps:

  • Closely monitor your hormone levels if you are taking bio-identical hormones. If you don’t test frequently enough, you could get way overdosed.
  • Get as much testing done when you visit your doctor and get someone to read your results from a more functional medicine perspective.
  • Test your insulin level every six months.
  • Eat when you’re hungry and make sure to eat enough food.
  • Be intuitive with your workouts and your exercise.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

If you missed out on joining the July class of The Fat Burning Female Project, no worries! You can either can wait until September for when the next class will start, or you can join The Fat Burning Female Self-Study, which you can enroll in anytime. And look out for The Fat Burning Female Retreat coming in September!

You can also email me your questions at info@ketoforwomenshow.com with “Keto Hot Seat” as your headline and I will make sure to get the answers out to you.

Shawn said:

“You can get all the tests in the world, but if you’re not seeing the right person that’s going to look at it from a different lens to let you know how you’re actually doing before it gets too bad, then they’re kind of pointless.”

“One of the best things about going keto is to calm the sugar dragon and get your need to binge or your cravings or any sort of having this attraction to carbs and sweets… but when you get off of that, it’s really, really nice. It’s very freeing.”

Do You Have To Eat High Fat To Be Keto? -- #055
01:01:33

How much fat do we need to eat to be keto? Do we really need to eat high fat to be keto? How reliable are the studies being done on keto? If these questions have been running through your mind, then you’ve come to the right podcast!

Topics Discussed in this Episode:

  • The reasons why I believe eating a high-fat diet is necessary to get into ketosis, stay in ketosis, and reap the benefits of ketosis.
  • The 4 ways you can get into ketosis.
  • Why eating fat to satiety doesn’t work for most women.
  • How The Fat Burning Female Project can help you in your keto journey.
  • Julie Sternberg’s keto success story as a Fat Burning Female.

Key Takeaways:

  • No studies have been done specifically looking at the need for a certain percentage of fat in order to get into ketosis.
  • Studies are not the most reliable source of information. When you can find a study that proves something, you can just as easily find a study that disproves it.
  • To get a female body into ketosis, it does need high fat for a period of time. However, saying “high fat” doesn’t always mean 90% fat. It’s different for everybody, especially for the long term.
  • The higher your fat intake at the induction phase of ketosis, the quicker you will get into ketosis. When you get into ketosis and you continue that high-fat trend, your body will adapt faster so you become a quicker fat burner.

Action Steps:

  • Take the time, in the beginning, to increase your fat intake to make your transition into ketosis a lot easier.
  • Make sure you start doing keto correctly.
  • If you’re already in ketosis, start doing keto in a safer, smarter approach.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

I just want to remind you guys that the next round of The Fat Burning Female Project is happening in July. The one-day enrolment takes place on July 2nd and the class starts on July 9th. If you are interested in joining, make sure to click on the link and sign up to be on the email list so you can get a notification once the enrolment opens.

You also the have option to join The Fat Burning Female Self-Study, which you can enroll in anytime. If you’re not quite up to joining The Fat Burning Female Project just yet, this one might suit you better.

I have also decided to do a video series called Keto Roadblocks for the woman who is already in ketosis but not experiencing the benefits of being in ketosis. So if that’s you, you can go ahead and watch the videos, and I hope that you can gain more clarity and more reasons to look into your own body.

Shawn said:

“Seeing so many cases of women not increasing their fat enough, just lowering their carbs and protein, and not getting into ketosis… seeing how much damage can be done in that low carb purgatory place, right there, leads me to know we’ve got to increase the fat.”

“You will get to a point where you will have a lot of options and a lot of flexibility within keto and you’ll stay in ketosis. But I have never found that to be the case for someone right off the bat, especially a woman.”

KetoCon 2018 Recap, Rants and Takeaways -- #054
01:12:28

If you wanted to go to the KetoCon 2018 but couldn’t make it, don’t be dismayed! I recorded this episode especially for you! Fresh from the KetoCon, let me give you a recap of my trip and share takeaways from some of the talks that I found really helpful, as well as talk about the vendors that I loved. Enjoy!

Topics Discussed in this Episode:

  • The power of keto success stories
  • Getting out of the keto closet
  • The KetoCon 2018 talks
  • Mental health and keto
  • Oxidative priority
  • Resistance-trained athletes and lean body mass hyper-responders
  • The journey towards self-discovery and finding freedom in keto
  • The results you’re looking for when you’re doing keto
  • Anxiety and depression and how they are related to ketosis

Key Takeaways:

  • The first thing your body is always going to burn off is alcohol. So as soon as you have alcohol, no matter how much you’re making ketones, your body is going to burn the alcohol instead of the ketones.
  • Everything else could be going right and you could be doing every other thing perfectly, but if you’re stressed and your cortisol is dysregulated, things are not going to turn out well.
  • Studies have shown that people who have elevated blood sugar are two times more likely to develop depression and anxiety.

Action Steps:

  • Don’t give up but keep looking for answers for whatever problem, disease or condition that you have.
  • Cut off or cut down alcohol, find your protein sweet spot, keep your carbs low, and use fat to satiety (unless you are transitioning into ketosis).
  • Test your carb tolerance and/or your protein tolerance, and add carb ups throughout the week or whenever it feels necessary.
  • Test for food sensitivities and work on healing your gut.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

I just want to remind you guys that the next round of The Fat Burning Female Project is happening in July. The one-day enrolment takes place on July 2nd and the class starts on July 9th. So if you are interested in joining, make sure to click on the link and sign up to be on the email list.

Shawn said:

“I think for a lot of people… they are so much more inspired and everything is so much more confirmed by the stories, by just hearing people’s stories of success and total transformation on a huge level… That stuff cannot be denied.”

“Powerful — it’s such a perfect word to describe what’s going on here in the keto community. And it’s not going anywhere, it’s just getting started. And we’re really at the tip of the iceberg right now, I feel. There’s going to be so much more out there.”

Keto Hot Seat: Lowered Metabolism, Eating For Workouts, Hypoglycemic Episodes, Addressing Keto For Hormones Naysayers -- #053
59:54

Welcome to another Keto Hot Seat episode! I always find it exciting to do one because I never know what questions I’m going to get. As much as I’m excited to answer your questions, I hope you’re just as excited to hear the answers. Enjoy!

Keto Hot Seat questions answered in this episode:

  • Should I eat more when I work out?
  • Is it recommended to eat “estrogenic foods” when trying to correct amenorrhea?
  • Does not eating when you’re not hungry lower your metabolism?
  • Are blood ketones showing ketones that we are using or excess ketones? When is the optimal time of day to test?
  • Why do I have hypoglycemic symptoms with keto?
  • What is the proper meal to consume before a half marathon?
  • How can I correct getting heavy periods?
  • Is there a network of affordable functional doctors?
  • Why do I get my period twice a month whenever I go keto?
  • Can keto be used to improve my irregular post-pill menstrual cycle?
  • Why do some people don’t recommend keto when you have hormonal imbalances?
  • Why can’t some people eat nuts and seeds? What causes the inflammation?
  • How can I follow keto when I can’t eat berry or nuts?
  • Is there a certain percentage of body fat over a standard range that we should be concerned about?

Key Takeaways:

  • As far as tracking how many calories you burn when you work out, if you’re looking at a machine, it’s super inaccurate. If you’re looking at a gadget, it could be a little more inaccurate, but there’s just no way to fully track the calories that you burn.
  • When you have amenorrhea, have to find out why you’re not cycling. There are a number of possible reasons why and it’s different for every woman. Eating “estrogenic foods” will not solve the problem.
  • A great hack to getting your metabolic capacity to go up and making you hungry to eat enough food is to work out.
  • It’s very easy for keto not to work for your hormones and to make it actually worse. This is the reason why there are practitioners out there saying not to do it. Keto needs to be done differently for women. We should not be following the man’s approach to keto.
  • If you do keto like a man, you may worsen your hormonal imbalance and worsen your thyroid imbalance, your adrenals, and your metabolism. When you do keto for a woman, you heal those things.

Action Steps:

  • Get rid of the “calories in versus calories out” mentality.
  • Eat intuitively, even when you work out.
  • Expand the variety of fats in your diet.
  • Look at your body and see if you notice any changes like excess body fat in places where they didn’t use to be.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The Fat Burning Female Self-Study is now officially open for enrolment. It will be an ongoing enrolment so you can join anytime! As for The Fat Burning Female Project, the enrolment for the next round will be on Monday, July 2nd, the course materials will be delivered on July 6th, and the class will start on July 9th.

Also, I just want to remind you that I will be at the KetoCon in Austin, Texas, this weekend. I will be speaking on Sunday, late morning, on Finding Your Version of Keto. So if you’re going to be there, let me know and come to find me. I would love to meet all of you!

I will also do a webinar on the same topic, so if you can’t make it to the KetoCon, make sure to catch my webinar on Finding Your Version of Keto.

Take care!

Shawn said:

“Just because we’re becoming fat burners, that doesn’t mean that your metabolism or your metabolic capacity isn’t going to change along with that. It doesn’t mean that we keep burning at this high rate just because we’re keto. It’s not keto’s fault.”

“You don’t have to worry about losing the fat, you just need to worry about gaining the muscle. If you gain muscle, your body is going to change. Your body is going to take care of that fat because it’s going to need more fuel.”

Using Keto for Fertility + Optimal Female Health with Dr. Isaac Jones and Erica Jones -- #052
56:07

If you’re interested to learn more about keto and fertility, and just women’s health in general, then this episode is for you! Dr. Isaac Jones and Erica Jones talk about how they use the ketogenic diet in their practices to help their patients optimize their health, and in particular to help women gain fertility.

Topics Discussed in this Episode

  • The benefits of the ketogenic lifestyle from an inflammatory perspective
  • The benefits of the ketogenic lifestyle from a fertility perspective
  • The 3 main things that cause infertility
  • The 5 things that create chronic inflammation on a cellular level
  • The ways that you can support your gut health and address infertility issues

Key Takeaways:

  • The majority of people genetically actually need a more low-carb diet, especially if they’re dealing with inflammation.
  • Most people have inflammation in their body on a cellular level, and the goal is to get rid of it. One of the best ways to do that is a low-carb diet, and one of the best strategies within the context of a low-carb diet is to follow the ketogenic diet.
  • The ketogenic diet is one of the best tools that anyone can use to get to a high state of performance.
  • Sugar is estrogenic, and one of the reasons why women can’t get pregnant is because they’re in a state of estrogen dominance.
  • Fertility issues improve when we see people get to a healthier weight.
  • Micronutrient deficiency is at very core of a lot of the challenges that we’re seeing in the 21st century.
  • Men have as much healing and digging to do with their health as women.

Keto Hot Seat: Significant Other Not On Board, Intuitive Keto, Wine On Keto, Counting Veggies As Carbs -- #051
55:51

We have a fresh new batch of questions to start this round of Keto Hot Seat episodes. Are you ready to get through them? Let’s dive in!

Keto Hot Seat questions answered in this episode:

  • What are your thoughts on castor oil packs for detoxifying the liver?
  • How can you maintain a keto lifestyle when your spouse/significant other is not on board?
  • What does it mean when you change your diet and later you notice some changes in your cycle?
  • How does one eat intuitively when they’re cooking for a family that still wants and needs three meals a day, meal planning for a time, and budgeting is absolutely necessary?
  • Does electrolyte and mineral deficiency cause keto “stink”? Why do some people get it and some don’t?
  • Does drinking a glass of wine bump you out of ketosis? How much alcohol is okay to drink when you’re on keto?
  • Can vegans be keto?
  • What are the ratios of electrolytes we need and which supplements do you recommend?
  • What are some of the hormonal changes and symptoms you might experience as your hormones level out when you have PCOS and have been doing keto for a few months?
  • How can a keto diet assist with cognitive symptoms of depressions like negative thinking, difficulty concentrating, distractibility, indecisiveness, etc?
  • Do carbs from veggies count towards your total carb count?
  • Can intermittent fasting cause silent reflux?

Key Takeaways:

  • Changing your diet causes stress on your body, and when your body is stressed, it takes a toll on your hormones and it will show up in changes in your cycle.
  • Food intake is one of the biggest stressors on the body because the body needs nourishment. As soon as it’s not getting the nourishment that it needs or that it’s used to, it gets stressed out.
  • We all have different electrolyte levels in our bodies and they all need to be in balance with each other and with what you do.

Action Steps:

  • Take the time to prep your body before using castor oil packs to detoxify.
  • If your spouse/significant other is not on board with keto, find support elsewhere.
  • Get into the habit of intuitive eating as much of the time as you can.
  • If you have a stronger body odor than normal or maybe have stinky feet, raise your magnesium levels and electrolyte levels in general and drink more water overall.
  • Take away any feelings of restriction you might have when doing keto, otherwise, you won’t be able to sustain it.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The next thing coming up for me will be the KetoCon in Austin, Texas on June 15th to 17th, where I will be speaking about finding your own version of keto. If you happen to be there, please come and find me. I would love to meet all of you in person!

Today is the first day that you can join The Fat Burning Female Self-Study Class. If you feel that you’re not quite ready yet to take on The Fat Burning Female Project but still want to learn more about keto, then this self-study class would be a good option for you. It will be an ongoing enrolment so you can join anytime you’re ready.

As always, if you have any questions that you would like for me to answer in future Keto Hot Seat episodes, be on the lookout for the next Keto Hot Seat call for questions on Facebook and Instagram. However, if you’re someone who doesn’t do social media, you can still email me your questions at info@ketoforwomenshow.com with “Keto Hot Seat” as your headline and I will make sure to get the answers out to you.

Take care!

Shawn said:

Raising Healthy Kids, Impacts of Stress, + Meat Quality with Angela Mavridis of Tribali Foods -- #050
53:51

When it comes to keto, there is always something new to learn and discover! Tune in as Angela Mavridis, the founder of Tribali Foods, shares about how she relied on the ketogenic diet to help with her own health issues in the past. As a holistic nutritionist and a single mom, she also talks about how to incorporate a healthy lifestyle when raising your kids.

Topics Discussed in this Episode

  • Angela’s health journey from paleo to confusion and back again
  • Instilling a healthy lifestyle in your kids and teaching them how to cook
  • How stress impacts your health and what you can do about it
  • The issues you need to be aware of about the meat that you put on your plate

Key Takeaways:

  • You actually have to adjust your food and nutrition to the stage of life you are in and to everything else that is going on in your life. Everything needs adjusting in context. What used to work in your 20s may not work anymore in your 30s or 40s.
  • Being on keto can quiet down sugar cravings.
  • When it comes to your diet, don’t just stick to dogma. Tinker a little bit and find out what works for you.
  • It’s so important to not let the things that balance out stress go by the wayside. Sleep, community, support, exercise, movement, food — all these can counterbalance the stress that’s weighing on you.

Action Steps:

  • Adjust your food to the stage of life you are in.
  • Build your plate with a reasonable amount of protein that correlates with your body structure and your nutritional goals.
  • Monitor your ketone levels.
  • Do some baseline tests to know where you’re at when it comes to your health.
  • Make sure you carve out some time for yourself to balance out the stress.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

I am actually away when this episode comes out. I had been invited to be a speaker on the Low Carb Cruise where I will be doing a talk on Why Keto is Different for Women. I can’t wait to share the experience with you, so look forward to my recap of the event!

The Fat Burning Female Self-study Class is opening for enrolment on Friday, June 1st, and it will be an ongoing enrolment so you can join anytime you’re ready. I will go over next week on who this would be good for and who this would not be good for, so be on the lookout for that in the next episode.

As always, if you have any questions that you would like for me to answer in future Keto Hot Seat episodes, be on the lookout for the Keto Hot Seat call for questions on Facebook and Instagram. However, if you’re someone who doesn’t do social media, you can still email me your questions at info@ketoforwomenshow.com with “Keto Hot Seat” as your headline and I will make sure to get the answers out to you.

Take care!

Angela says:

“The best thing you can do for yourself is to take pride in nurturing your body.”

“Food can either be your poison or your medicine.”

All About Birth Control! Side Effects, Natural Options, How To Transition
56:08

Have you got any questions about birth control? As women, it’s certainly a very important topic that we need to chat about. There are just so many options out there and I want to empower you to make the best decision for YOU.

Topics Discussed in this Episode:

  • The reason why most physicians prescribe the birth control pill
  • The side effects of using the birth control pills
  • The risks of using IUD
  • Natural family planning (NFP) or fertility awareness method (FAM) — the safer birth control alternative
  • How to know when you’re ovulating

Key Takeaways:

  • In a lot of cases, taking the birth control pill is like putting a Band-Aid on your hormonal issues.
  • Your menstrual cycle or lack thereof is one way for you to gauge your health status. But if you’re using birth control, you can’t really do that.
  • When you’re on the birth control pill over a period of time, your personality changes and you become more moody and irritable.
  • Women on the birth control pill have a higher risk of cancer, such as breast, ovarian, cervical, liver, and uterine cancer.
  • A ketogenic diet is going to help a lot when you get off the birth control pill or have your IUD removed.

Action Steps:

  • Consider all the possible side-effects before deciding to use the birth control pill or the IUD.
  • Talk to your doctor if you decide to get off the pill or have your IUD removed.
  • Reduce the amount of stress that you can to help your hormones get back into balance.
  • Learn the natural family planning or the fertility awareness method

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

If you have any questions that you would like for me to answer in future Keto Hot Seat episodes, be on the lookout for the Keto Hot Seat call for questions on Facebook and Instagram. However, if you’re someone who doesn’t do social media, you can still email me your questions at info@ketoforwomenshow.com with “Keto Hot Seat” as your headline and I will make sure to get the answers out to you.

Take care!

Shawn says:

“Birth control options don’t fix your hormonal issues.”

“You’re not doing anything to heal your body by being on birth control.”

Keto Hot Seat Hormone Edition: Menopause Differences, Amenorrhea, Birth Control, and more!
59:10

We have another fun Keto Hot Seat episode in store for us! This time, it’s going to be a special edition where I will be answering questions that I couldn’t get to during my Keto for Hormones Webinar. Enjoy!

Keto Hot Seat questions answered in this episode:

  • How does menopause change things in your life? Is it okay to go on keto when you’re going through menopause? How do adrenal dysfunction and hormonal imbalance affect menopause?
  • Is there any harm in doing intermittent fasting? Is it okay to do intermittent fasting when you have hypothyroidism or you’re postmenopausal?
  • How do you know if you’re not eating enough calories when the obvious signs appear to be under control? How do you know if you’re causing more stress on your body by unintentionally not eating enough?
  • Is there a supplement that can help reduce cortisol in order for you to be able to sleep better?
  • How can you balance your hormones to better handle menopause?
  • What can you do to get your cycle back or get it back to normal when you’re on keto? How about when you’re spotting or bleeding while on birth control and on keto?
  • How can carb cycling be part of a ketogenic diet?
  • How can you get rid of bloating?

Key Takeaways:

  • Having a negative mentality and focus towards your body is detrimental to your health.
  • Just because you are going through menopause or have already gone through menopause, it does not mean that you no longer have hormones. You still have hormones and they still need to be in balance for you to feel at your best.
  • The symptoms that you feel while going through menopause and beyond are usually a sign of something that has probably been there for years prior.
  • If you want to do keto and want to heal your body, then you have to understand the power of fatty acids and the necessity of having healthy fats in your diet to the degree that your body can produce ketones.

Action Steps:

  • Get your hormones tested through saliva or urine instead of through blood.
  • Get rid of fat fear. Give yourself about 2 months of eating high fat, use that time to work on healing your body, and see how it goes.
  • Get into the rhythm and habit of eating enough food.
  • Make sure to get yourself relaxed before bed in order to sleep well.
  • Don’t overthink and overanalyze your body.
  • Move your body and build some muscle.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

If you didn’t get the chance to watch the Keto for Hormones Webinar, it’s now available in the Keto For Women Show YouTube channel. It’s also where I post these episodes along with other webinars and quick videos, so make sure to subscribe on YouTube!

If you want to do the class on your own, you now have the option to take The Fat Burning Female Self-study starting on June 1st. And you will always have the option to also enroll in the Project as enrolment becomes available.

Finding Your Happy Weight + My Experience With Fasting -- #047
01:03:56

What has your journey through ketosis been like? Have you already found what works for you? Let me share about my own personal health journey in the hope that this will motivate you to find your own story, empower you to learn more about your body, and help you take the time to actually understand what is and isn’t working for you.

In this episode you will learn:

  • What is happy weight versus ideal weight
  • The checklist for your body when you are at your happy weight
  • How I put my body through stress in order to lose weight and its consequences on my health
  • How I went keto
  • My fasting experience and the things that I learned from it
  • How I found my happy weight

Key Takeaways:

  • There is a very clear distinction between happy weight and ideal weight.
  • Your weight struggle is a symptom of something deeper going on with your body and that weight isn’t going to change until you are well.
  • You cannot lose weight before you lower inflammation, before you get your blood sugar under control, and before you get your hormones balanced.
  • Fasting has some amazing benefits but it’s not for everyone.

 Action Steps:

  • Ditch the scale entirely.
  • Lose weight in a healthful way.
  • Fix your health issues and get to your happy weight.
  • Know enough about your body and decide if fasting is right for you.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

We have the new class of The Fat Burning Female Project starting this week. If you missed out on that and but still would like to get a jump start into ketosis and doing it safely and effectively using the Fat Burning Female protocol, stay tuned and watch out for The Fat Burning Female Self-study Class which will be available in the coming weeks.

If you were part of the Keto for Hormones webinar that I hosted last April 30th, thank you so much for being there! Webinars are definitely something I will be doing more of, so be on the lookout for my future webinars! I will be doing a follow-up to the Keto for Hormones webinar real soon. And if you have any topic that you would like to have discussed in more detail, you can email me at info@ketoforwomenshow.com.

And if you have any questions that you would like for me to answer in future Keto Hot Seat episodes, I will be taking questions through Facebook and Instagram, so watch out for my post  that says “Keto Hot Seat Questions Needed.” However, if you don’t have any social media, you can still email me your questions at info@ketoforwomenshow.com with “Keto Hot Seat” as your headline and I will make sure to get the answers out to you.

Take care!

Shawn says:

“When you’re so sick, you just want to feel better as quickly as possible, and that’s what fasting was able to do for me.”

“The true help is in empowering you to find out what works for you.”

Healing PCOS Forever with Ximena de la Serna, NTP -- #046
01:06:11

Can you heal your body of PCOS by changing your diet? Yes, you can! Ximena de la Serna will talk about how you can be PCOS-free forever through a low carb high-fat diet and by making the necessary changes in your lifestyle.

In this episode you will learn:

  • How Ximena suffered from PCOS for 20 years
  • What is PCOS and what are its symptoms
  • What high levels of insulin do to your body
  • What happens when you don’t ovulate
  • How to address PCOS and have it go into remission
  • How fast you can recover from PCOS through keto
  • What is the most important function of food
  • What other things besides food that you need to consider when you have PCOS

Key Takeaways:

  • Having PCOS doesn’t mean that you have cysts in your ovaries. It cannot be diagnosed by ultrasound only.
  • Insulin resistance is not a symptom of PCOS, it’s the trigger of PCOS.
  • It doesn’t matter that you have the PCOS gene in your DNA. It doesn’t mean that you’re going to develop it. But if you give it what it needs to be activated, it will develop.
  • Just because you have your period, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re ovulating.
  • Once you remove the disruptor from your body, then you can ovulate again. And once you start ovulating, then the free testosterone in your body starts to lower.
  • Testosterone is not bad. As women, we need it. But we don’t want too much free testosterone that creates all of these problems.
  • Food is a genetic messenger.
  • You don’t need supplements for PCOS but they can be the cherry on top that will help you improve and become insulin-sensitive.

 Action Steps:

  • Control your food by eating healthy and eating enough.
  • Detoxify.
  • Learn about your cycle and optimizing your cycle.
  • Manage stress.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

I am hosting a free live webinar about Keto for Hormones on Monday, April 30th at 11:00 AM MST. So if you’re interested to join, register now! And if you can’t attend live, a recording will be available for you as long as you are registered in advance. And if you have any questions specifically about using the ketogenic diet to heal and balance your hormones, email them to info@shawnmynar.com beforehand and I’ll get to as many questions as possible on the webinar.

If you are looking to participate in the next round of The Fat Burning Female Project, don’t miss the one-day enrollment on May 1st. Not only will you be making new friends and be among peers who will give you support and encouragement throughout the six-week program but you will be learning a bunch of things about yourself and your body along the way.

And if you do get in the May class or have completed The Fat Burning Female Project in the past, then you are welcome to join The Fat Burning Female Retreat in Boulder, Colorado on September 14th to 16th. And The Good Gut Project and The Happy Hormones Project, which I run in small groups, will also be open to you.

And if you’re not yet ready to take on the 6-week course, I have created The Fat Burning Female Self-study Class which will be available in the next few months.

If you have any questions that you would like for me to answer in future Keto Hot Seat episodes, watch out for my post on Facebook and Instagram that says “Keto Hot Seat Questions Needed.” You can also email me at info@ketoforwomenshow.com with “Hot Seat Question” as the subject and I will make sure to get the answers out to you.

Take care!

Ximena says:

“The only way for you to be healthy is that you allow your body to do things itself.”

“You are the thing standing between your body and your health.”

Keto Hot Seat: Bad PMS with Keto, Reasons For Low Ketones, The Importance Of Self-Acceptance, BHRT, Accelerated Heart Rate, and so much more! -- #045
58:23

Are you ready to burn through some more Keto Hot Seat questions with me today? There is so much to learn and still so much that we are all dying to know. We can never get enough when it comes to keto!

Keto Hot Seat questions answered in this episode:

  • Why do ketone levels dip below 0.5 two weeks before menstruation?
  • Why do hormonal issues like cramping, period pain, and mood swings get worse on keto?
  • How can I get into nutritional ketosis?
  • How bad is it to eat legumes on keto?
  • Why do some people talk about carb cycling or re-feeding to break ketosis once in a while as a necessary action to ward off some perceived negative long-term effect of a constant ketogenic diet?
  • In bone broths, are there bones that are superior to the others or have different benefits depending on the type of bone used?
  • What is the most budget-friendly way to get your blood tested?
  • What foods are recommended for Hashimoto’s or other autoimmune conditions? Why isn’t dairy among them?
  • What is keto rash and how do you deal with it?
  • How do you keep a handle on how much time you spend on your phone, computer, social media, etc.?
  • Can anemia cause lower blood ketone readings? On the flip side, can iron dextran infusions raise ketone readings?
  • What problems are you creating when you’re having those off-the-wagon days when you’re eating high fat and high carbs? Do those high fats end up just getting stored?
  • Is accelerated heart rate part of the fat adaptation process?
  • When using keto to treat a neurological disorder, what is the therapeutic level of blood ketones and how do you get your ketones that high and maintain them?
  • How do adrenal fatigue and keto work together?
  • Why would someone gain weight when starting keto?
  • How does the absence of self-love and self-acceptance affect keto?
  • What is bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and is it beneficial for you?

Key Takeaways:

  • Our ketone readings change as our hormones change throughout our menstrual cycle.
  • As soon as you experience stress, it shows up in your menstrual cycle because your hormones get out of balance.
  • If you want to get higher ketone readings, it’s really important to not just look at what’s on your plate. Look at your whole situation and make sure everything is falling into place.
  • If you have been a past dieter of any sort where you have restricted your calories, then sometimes being keto can cause weight gain while your metabolism is adjusting. It is temporary and often necessary. It is healing and is not a bad thing.
  • You have to start changing your mentality and your mindset around YOU as a person, physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and just really love every piece of you for who you are today.

Action Steps:

  • Eat enough food to keep your body healthy and happy.
  • If you want to get into nutritional ketosis, increase your fat intake by a few servings a day and drop the protein a little bit.
  • Start working out if you haven’t started yet.
  • When it comes to what to eat and what not to eat, find what works for you and find what makes you feel good.
  • When it comes to making your own bone broth, look into the quality of the animal and how it was raised.
  • When dealing with autoimmune disease, look at the health of your immune system and work on your gut health.
  • When dealing with keto rash, you can take essential oil baths or Epsom salt baths and soothe your skin using natural creams.
  • Supplement with electrolytes when you’re in ketosis.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

If you are looking to participate in the next round of The Fat Burning Female Project, then don’t forget to mark your calendars! Classes will start on May 7th and the one-day enrolment will be on May 1st. Make sure you don’t miss out on a spot by getting on the email list at The Fat Burning Female Project website.

And if you do get in the May class or have completed The Fat Burning Female Project in the past, May 1st is the day when you can start making reservations for The Fat Burning Female Retreat in Boulder, Colorado on September 14th to 16th. Detox And Liver Health With Keto -- #044
01:02:33

How serious is the issue of toxicity? No matter who you are, liver health is definitely something for you to consider. So join me as I talk about this very important topic as it relates to keto and women’s health.

In this episode you will learn:

  • Why we need to care about our liver health
  • How we can support our liver
  • What role does keto play in having good liver health
  • What are some things that could go wrong with your liver health
  • What are some supplements or herbs that are found in nature that can nourish and support the liver and help with detoxification

Key Takeaways:

  • The liver is responsible for breaking down our fats into fatty acids so we need to have a really good functioning liver in order to digest our fats.
  • There is a need to support the liver in the process of becoming keto-adapted.
  • We need a good amount of dietary fat to produce bile that in turn breaks down fat.
  • We need a healthy balance of electrolytes.

Action Steps:

  • Download the Liver Health Guide that corresponds to this episode.
  • Take a liver support supplement when you’re doing keto.
  • Take electrolytes as needed and make sure you have a healthy balance of electrolytes in your body.
  • Eat a variety of different foods, and especially ones that are good for the liver.
  • Work on the quality of the fats in your diet.
  • Choose organic produce.
  • Watch your alcohol intake.
  • Talk to your doctor about any medication that you’re on but that you might not really need to be on.
  • Take natural supplements that will help with detoxification and support your liver.
  • Sweat out the toxins in your body through workouts or in a sauna.
  • Get a good water filter and filter the water that you drink or use.
  • Switch to beauty products and cleaning products that use safe, natural, non-toxic ingredients.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The Keto for Women Show has a brand new partner, and it’s none other than Tribali Foods, which I absolutely love. The latest edition of The Fat Burning Female Project will soon begin in May. The one-day enrolment will be on May 1 and classes will start a week later, on May 7. Even when you already are in ketosis, if you want to be in a community of ladies who are working on their health and you want to make sure you are doing keto correctly, this is definitely something you should look into.

And anyone who joins this May class of The Fat Burning Female Project , along with those who have joined in the past, gets an invitation to The Fat Burning Female Retreat in September! So make sure to watch out for that.

Also, if you are still looking for a ranch dressing recipe, go to my website and get my recipe. I have had the best feedback for that little recipe and it’s my joy to share that yummy goodness with you!

And as a tip to be able to eat the veggies that you need, try a slaw! Let me know if you do and make sure to take a photo of it and tag me over on Instagram or Facebook. And be on the lookout for my slaws too. I’m going to be making them all summer and I’ll show you how to do them over on my Instagram Stories or my Facebook stories when I do.

Take care!

Shawn says:

"It is our duty as women who cares about their health to do what you can do to control [toxins] because it’s going to make a difference in your overall health, especially in your liver health.”

“As women doing keto… take charge of your health. And you’ve got to take charge of your liver health in order to do that.”

Getting Women Keto-Adapted with Vivica Menegaz -- #043
55:07

You may have been doing the ketogenic diet for a while now, but are you keto-adapted? What difference does keto-adaptation make? Vivica Menegaz joins me in the show to talk about all these and more!

In this episode you will learn:

  • What it means to be keto-adapted and what are its benefits
  • The value of keto-adaptation and how we apply it in our modern lives
  • The difference that keto-adaptation brings to your body
  • The different players involved in metabolism and understanding its complexity
  • What are the different aspects we need to consider when doing keto for women?
  • The foundation upon which the ketogenic lifestyle rests
  • What is the quick fix mentality and what are the problems that result from it

Key Takeaways:

  • It’s not always easy to get keto-adapted, it depends on a number of factors such as your metabolic profile, your insulin resistance, your liver’s ability to convert fats into ketones, etc.
  • Less than 20% of the people who are doing the ketogenic diet now are able to reach a satisfactory state of keto-adaptation.
  • The first thing we need to address, when it comes to achieving weight loss, for example, is toxicity.
  • Ketosis and keto-adaptation are part of our natural physical genetic code.
  • Ketosis was not invented by nature for us to lose weight. It was invented to keep us alive.
  • It is perfectly natural to go in and out of ketosis. It is part of the natural state of well-being.
  • Keto can be done in many ways. There are different ways for different people of different ages and different lifestyles.

Action Steps:

  • Take whatever you read, especially when it’s labeled scientific research, with a grain of salt. It’s not necessarily true.
  • When it comes to doing the ketogenic diet, don’t be afraid to be your own experiment and see how things go for you.
  • Embrace a more holistic perspective on what healing really means. What does it take to be healthy and live healthy in your mind and in your body?
  • Take responsibility for your own health and well-being. This is the first step in the ketogenic journey.
  • Bring mindfulness and awareness to everything you do, especially eating.
  • Be loving and compassionate to yourself and have a true support system among women.
