Misinformation, Malinformation and Disinformation
28:10
"The Professor" Pritch Pritchard, APR & Fellow PRSA is taking a deep dive into the scourge of modern communications: Misinformation, Malinformation and Disinformation. We identify, define and discuss the different types of media manipulations prevalent in today's 24/7 global media mix. Misinformation is false, but not created or shared with the intention of causing harm. Disinformation is deliberately created to mislead, harm, or manipulate a person, social group, organization, or country. Malinformation is based on fact, but used out of context to mislead, harm, or manipulate. Pritch references the disinformation literacy resources of PRSA: http://voices4everyone.prsa.org/disinformation/disinformation-literacy/ To contact us for advice, assistance or collaboration: https://thegoldinggroup.com/contact-us/

Common Start-Up and Small Business Mistakes
38:16
We’re discussing all the mistakes and missteps of many start-ups and small businesses that can add up to presenting a picture of failure, not success. These minor errors can collectively harm or kill a new or small brand. We cover basics like having a proper website with corresponding email addresses, official phone numbers, and cohesive social media accounts. Failure to explain product/service, differentiation, value proposition, the people involved or not telling your story (you assume no one cares, but they do). Too much focus on sales numbers or marketing before product/service development. Making way too many assumptions, not being patient enough and chasing fast cash are just a few of the topics we cover on this episode. On the #NeoMarketing podcast, The Golding Group partners Kyle Golding and Pritch Pritchard, APR & Fellow PRSA discuss best practices, latest trends and modern techniques for professional business communications including advertising, marketing, digital channels, social media, public relations and alternative options. The Value Of Delegation
33:27
The ability to delegate is an often misunderstood and overlooked leadership skill. Yet, delegation is the quickest way to promote, or stagnate, business growth. Without delegation within an organization, you have a much higher potential for inefficiency, employee burnout and missed opportunities. On this episode, we discuss the how and why of delegation for success. On the #NeoMarketing podcast, The Golding Group partners Kyle Golding and Pritch Pritchard, APR & Fellow PRSA discuss best practices, latest trends and modern techniques for professional business communications including advertising, marketing, digital channels, social media, public relations and alternative options. Top Trend 2022: Data Activation
35:02

Consumers are more sophisticated than ever in 2022. They know businesses are collecting data on them, some of which they voluntarily share via search engines, website clicks and opt-ins. It's not enough to stop at basic, generic demographic data for marketing. In 2022, all businesses (big and small) need to further inspect, analyze and activate the data they have on current and prospective customers to highly customize marketing, customer service and sales process. Spend more time exploring curated product/service offerings, inventory on demand and unique offers for the smallest audience subgroups. Focus on repeat business, referrals, brand loyalty and highly focused differentiation.

Lifetime Value
19:43
An old idea that's very, very relevant in 2022: Lifetime Value of advertising, marketing, public relations and customer service. We discuss the impact of lifetime value in '22 based on an article written in the 1980's by Pritch's dad (an original "Mad Man" advertising pro): Pritchard Jr, H. O. "A Member’s Lifetime Value: Seeing Member Acquisition as an Investment in Your Organization’s Future." Association Management 36.6 (1991): 35-39. There is huge profitability in retaining clients instead of constant attraction, thus lifetime value of repeat business along with recommendations, endorsements and (potential) brand evangelist. We break down the why, how to execute, measurement, budgeting and management of creating lifetime value as an investment, not an expense. 00:00 From expense to investment 00:39 Intro 02:42 The longer they stay, the more value created 06:48 Evaluation of your product/service/program offering 08:30 The answer isn't always "just charge more" 11:00 Value added 14:50 All based on research of what's valuable to your audience 16:50 Profitable and sustainable On the #NeoMarketing podcast, The Golding Group partners Kyle Golding and Pritch Pritchard, APR & Fellow PRSA discuss best practices, latest trends and modern techniques for professional business communications including advertising, marketing, digital channels, social media, public relations and alternative options. Five Keys To Starting Any Business
34:57

Episode 134 was inspired by a recent conversation we had with a new business owner who was overwhelmed by too much information. He had taken a multi-week class on starting a business, read blogs, listened to podcasts and purchased a franchise that came with a huge marketing manual. The problem was where to start, how to focus on what's most important and how all the advice in the world could b put into the simplest version possible to get his business off the ground. That's what we did for him and we hope to do for you with this episode.

His 800 pages instruction manual had 798 too many pages. Everything necessary was on the first two pages: Brand, Products & Services, SWOT, Audience, Advertising (all of it), Public Relations, Sales. We break all of these segments down to simple, easiest-to-understand action plans.

  • 05:00 It was all on the first two pages
  • 10:38 Brand + Product/Service DIFFERENTIATION #1
  • 13:37 POSITION vs. competition #2
  • 20:41 Target AUDIENCE #3
  • 24:54 SET and MEET EXPECTATIONS #4
  • 29:50 FOCUS on most effective channel(s) first #5

Profile In PR Failure (A Series of Teachable Moments)
25:33

On Ep133 of The Golding Group #NeoMarketing Podcast, Pritch Pritchard, APR & Fellow PRSA will react to the PR disaster of the Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel who made a minor crisis much worse by responding in all the wrong ways. Pritch will utilize Jim Lukaszewski's “Profiles in Failure" list of things NOT to do during crisis management. Nessel somehow managed to do everything on this list of actions to avoid. Not just a teachable moment, but a whole series of "what not to do" examples.

"Sometimes the only way to help organizations avoid embarrassment, humiliating visibility, enormous litigation, and just plain stupidity is to illustrate dramatically the pattern of behaviors and attitudes that lead to catastrophic reputational trouble." Jim Lukaszewski calls this pattern “Profiles in Failure.” https://www.e911.com/profiles-failure-behavior-patterns-precipitate-perpetuate-trouble/

NBC NEWS: Michigan's AG got drunk before a football game and wrote about it on Facebook. Attorney General Dana Nessel said she declined pleas from staff members to hire a crisis management firm to handle the fallout from the incident. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/michigans-ag-got-drunk-football-game-wrote-facebook-rcna5207

Civility and Decency in Crisis Communications

On Ep124, "The Professor" Pritch Pritchard APR & Fellow PRSA dives into a concept he's seeing more for top-level public relations professionals like Helio Fred Garcia and Jim Lukaszewski considering civility and decency at a higher rate and value than previously. In fact, Lukaszewski has a definition and call to action that we will discuss in detail today: "All questionable, inappropriate, unethical, unconscionable, immoral, predatory, improper, victim-producing and criminal behaviors are intentional. Client/Customer Focused Innovation
30:10
Subtitle: Notes From The Chick-Fil-A Drive Thru. It's not enough for businesses to do what they do well, but every business also needs to innovate to grow and profit. 2020, the year of COVID-19 definitely focused everyone on making the right changes in order to survive and/or thrive. But, you can't innovate just for the sake of innovation. You should make changes that your audience wants, needs or demands. It's not about building the coolest widget but delivering your product/service to your client/customer in a way that fits their situation the best. 01:06 COVID-19 Forces Innovation 02:21 What you can learn from the drive thru of a Chick-Fla-La? 07:59 How can you adapt this to your business? 08:08 Company Culture 09:23 Brand semantics of "My Pleasure" as a response to "Thank You" 10:31 Keep It Simple 11:34 Predictive business data 12:45 Create a demand for your product through customer service 13:25 Make a positive out of a negative 13:55 Don't complain, go fix the problem 14:47 It's not about the chicken sandwich 15:19 Create and then meet expectations 15:28 The key is innovation for the consumer, not the business 16:06 Innovate now, pay for it later 17:01 The cost of not innovating 18:05 You don't have to accept the status quo 20:03 A good way to miss opportunity 21:31 Again, create and then meet expectations (it's that important) 23:16 Dedication to process, culture and brand 23:47 How does this help you/your business? 24:09 The podcast not sponsored by Chick-Fla-A (unfortunately) 25:00 Differentiation by process 26:32 How it all goes together 27:30 Become an iconic brand 28:06 Invest in your customer On every #NeoMarketing podcast, we discuss best practices, latest trends and modern techniques for professional business communications including advertising, marketing, digital channels, social media, public relations and alternative options. Leadership By Delegation
23:41
"The Professor" Pritch Pritchard breaks down all the benefits of delegation, a true sign of leadership. For this podcast, we define Delegation as: "Dividing up responsibilities in order to be most efficient in the chain of command. Giving control, authority and responsibility to another person as an opportunity to provide value." Delegating, when done correctly, is a whole lot more than just telling people what to do. A quite example of leadership. 04:10 Saves time 05:21 Reduce burnout 06:29 Increase value and credibility 07:48 More/better executive experience 08:38 Benefits For employees 10:45 Self-esteem for the team 11:20 Think like an owner, not "just" an employee 12:01 Job enhancement and enjoyment (yes, that's important!) 14:02 Developing leadership skills in your organization 14:30 Overall effectiveness 14:37 How to delegate effectively 15:08 Stop saying "easier to do it myself" 15:49 "We've always done it that way" red flag 17:00 Delegate by strengths and weaknesses of team members 17:23 Delegate in chunks 18:10 Share the big picture 19:22 Define responsibilities 19:34 Provide authority when you delegate 20:28 Make it possible for team members to ask for help 21:46 Don't micromanage, no one appreciates it We also reference (a few times) The Leadership Challenge: How to Make Extraordinary Things Happen in Organizations by Kouzes and Posner. A Better Way Of Explaining Strategy
17:12
"The Professor" Pritch Pritchard, APR has found a new (and what we think is much better) way to explain the concept and execution of Strategy for students and professionals. On this episode, we discuss a better explanation of Strategy and Strategic Execution based on a new definition by Andrew Bellay, who runs https://straty.com/ and holds (among other degrees) a Masters of Science in Management Science & Engineering from Stanford University. We discuss, dissect and elaborate on this definition: Strategy is the process of creating a well-aligned set of activities with the aim of occupying a valuable position in a competitive landscape. Then, we detail how these ideas fit into an overall approach to business, communication, etc.... Learning From Failures: Crisis Communications, Cancel Culture & Unmet Expectations
32:54
There are lessons we can all learn from very recent (and still ongoing) failures in crisis communications from our local electric company and elected officials during a weather event, bowing to cancel culture by a national non-profit org. and a billion-dollar tech company that can't live up to basic expectations. Strap in, we're calling out leaders for their mistakes and piecing together the lessons we can all learn. The key is learning from our (and other people's) mistakes. Crisis Communication: 1. There is no such thing as over-communication in crisis situations. 2. You have to meet expectations, not do the minimum. 3. Protocols are better than plans for adapting as a situation changes. 4. Keep your tools (analog and digital) up to date at all times, so you are prepared for a crisis situation. 5. Put a human face on a crisis. Let the people you need to connect with see and hear a real person. 6. Use everything, multiple times. See item #1 again. 7. Actual transparency and authenticity, the way real people (your stakeholders) expect it. Cancel Culture: You cannot appease your way back from being canceled. (Unless you really, really screwed up) the attempt to do so will only cost you, supporters while doing nothing to "un-cancel" your reputation online. Unmet Expectations: How can a Billion (with a B) dollar tech company like T-Mobile have a poorly designed and performing website? They must not care about customer appreciation. What do all of these have to do with each other? More communication, even if it's incomplete or not what people are happy to hear, is always better than less communication. Busting 10 Myths of Crisis Communications
21:51
"The Professor" Pritch Pritchard, APR and PRSA Fellow breaks down the top 10 crisis communications myths according to "Effective Crisis Communication - Moving From Crisis to Opportunity" by three of today’s most respected crisis/risk communication scholars: Robert R. Ulmer, University of Nevada/University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Timothy L. Sellnow, University of Central Florida and Matthew W. Seeger - Wayne State University. The Effective Crisis Communication https://www.sagepub.com/hi/nam/effective-crisis-communication/book246198 textbook examines the latest theories and innovative approaches for handling crisis. Unlike other crisis communication texts, this acclaimed book answers the question, “what now?” and explains how organizations can create the potential for opportunity, renewal, and growth through effective crisis communication. Authors Robert R. Ulmer, Timothy L. Sellnow, and Matthew W. Seeger provide guidelines for taking the many challenges that crises present and turning those challenges into opportunities. Practical lessons and in-depth case studies highlight successes and failures in dealing with core issues of crisis leadership, including managing uncertainty, communicating effectively, understanding risk, promoting communication ethics, enabling organizational learning, and producing renewing responses to crisis. Q4 2020 Winter Is Coming – Plan Now For 2021
28:20
Welcome to the first full week of Q4 2020. No matter how far from normal this year has been so far, there are still lessons to be learned, business processes to be evaluated and (most importantly) planning for 2021 should be in full swing. This year, you can't just create a Plan "A" but you also need plans "B" "C" and "D" to cover the variations of COVID-19 recovery, the presidential elections and general uncertainty in the world for the upcoming year. Since COVID-19 started impacting business transactions in early 2020, we have been telling you to Adapt, Adopt or Pivot. On this episode, we will discuss how to evaluate, measure and utilize what we have all learned from 2020 and how to best move your business forward into the still very uncertain 2021. Thanks to 2020, you should have made changes (minor or major) to your business operations with NEW and DIFFERENT tools (digital and brick/mortar) for marketing and selling, insights/data, competitive landscape, audience/potential audience and expectations. The key to 2021 will be taking advantage of what's working right now and in the future along with recovering the investments you have made to survive 2020. If you need help, don't know where to start or just don't want to go it alone please contact us - that's what we're here for! https://thegoldinggroup.com/contact-us/ BONUS: Do NOT use the term "New Normal" because in business every day is new and nothing about our current business situations can be considered "Normal". Adding Another Marketing Acronym: A.M.M.O.
8:59

There are a lot of marketing, communication and PR acronyms like RPIE, RACE, SMART, SWOT and ROI. On this episode, we add one more: A.M.M.O.

  • Audience
  • Message
  • Measurement
  • Objectives
  • (just not exactly in that order)

"The Professor" Pritch Pritchard, APR breaks down the acronym pieces, why each is important and how to use them in business communication. This works for external and internal communications which is extra important right now due to stress, concern and changes related to COVID-19 safety protocols, limitations and restrictions. Use A.M.M.O. to focus your aim at the target market before taking your shot at effective communication. Bullseye!

Crafting Messages That Resonate
17:48

Ep92: "The Professor" Pritch Pritchard breaks down the elements of a clear and captivating message via the acronym CUBE A (created by Brad Phillips, one of the world’s top media trainers) for internal and external communication.

  • C is for Consistent
  • U is for Unburdened
  • B is for Brief
  • E is for Earworthy
  • A is for Audience Focused

We discuss messages v. slogans, types of messages and tips for crafting your memorable message. We also discuss WiFM "What's in it For Me?" and "Not In My Backyard" or NIMBY.

According to Wikipedia, NIMBY first appears in a June 1980 newspaper article from Virginia, but was popularized in the 1980s by British politician Nicholas Ridley, who was Conservative Secretary of State for the Environment and comedian George Carlin used the term in a comedy skit, implying that people had already heard of it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NIMBY

Adapt, Adopt or Pivot in the Corona Virus Economy
45:54

With major restrictions placed on business by the COVID-19 outbreak, we go long (46 mins) and very deep into what small businesses need to do RIGHT NOW to survive. #Adapt #Adopt or #Pivot. This episode includes a massive amount of actionable content for businesses in all stages or Coronavirus reaction. Here's the outline.

Big Ideas:

  • Adapt & Adopt Before Pivot
  • During, After and the future of business
  • Minor To Major, Big To Small
  • Creating Ethical Opportunity From Struggle

Hit the Hardest: Concert Artist and Production / Trade Shows and Industry Events / Events Planning - wedding, fundraisers, professional orgs. / Non-Profit / Hospitality (bars, clubs) / Sports / Movie Theaters / Gyms / Arts and Entertainment

Those Already Adapting: Restaurants & Retail - Online, Delivery / Education - Online Classes, Distance learning / Medical - Drive-Up triage, adapting devices, etc. (long, long list)

B2B Model Adapting: Work From Home and Remote - Video Conferencing / Digital, Online, Mobile tools / Manufacturing retooling to fill needs (examples) DD Audio, Auto Makers making ventilators (Ford, GM, Musk, Dyson, MIT), Rouge Fitness, Apparel Manufacturers

Hard Hit: Support Industry such as Sales / Marketing / PR / Accounting / Legal / Insurance / Continuing Education Programs / Employee Training and Development

The T is SWOT is Threat. This is what you (should have) planned for.

Business Model: Adapt / Adopt / Pivot (but can you go back?) Public Goodwill for only so long / Meet them more than half way / Have 2-way conversation, learn from this experience / Don’t go "back to normal" as soon as possible

The Whole Market Has To Change, So Do You! What You Need: Speed / Attention / Speed / Not once, but over and over / Did we mention Speed?

Do NOT do this ALONE. Let your third-party experts (like us) help you make hard decisions to plan for an immediate response and then manage into the future. This isn't just an economic decision, it's personal for most business owners and entrepreneurs.

Be Smart / Be Strategic / Be Flexible / Be Fast and Decisive / Brand over SALES (if you can)

If your business is secure or barely affected, do your part while focusing on: GOING LONG (Attitude and Planning) / BRAND BUILDING / PUBLIC RELATIONS / CORPORATE CULTURE Note: ALL CAPS for a reason, it's that important.

You are NOT taking advantage (being unethical) by doing business/sales if you are providing value with intent. Let your ethics guide the process. Protect your family, your employees, your vendors, your subcontractors, your community and your country. Fight like hell! Good luck!

Ethical Considerations In A Crisis
18:36

"Crisis doesn't build character, it reveals it." You've heard this many times before. Unless you're Jared Leto or filming the Big Brother Germany tv show you know the world, the United States and the collective business community are in a crisis based on the Covid-19 panic. We discuss best practices for managing any crisis (health-related or not) and why having lapses in ethical standards or taking a "shortcut" is the last thing you want to do in a time of uncertainty. We filmed this a few weeks ago, before the current state of the nation, but these ideas are always (and universally) the best actions, attitudes and tactics for your business, nonprofit, professional organization, etc... On every #NeoMarketing podcast, we discuss best practices, latest trends and modern techniques for professional business communications including advertising, marketing, digital channels, social media, public relations and alternative options.

This theory might seem counterintuitive, but our CEO Kyle Golding is here to explain it all along with how to implement this into your startup, business or career development. How does saying Yes and No appropriately factor into creating success, what are the practical applications and what exactly is "business karma"? Listen to find out. Weaponized Social Media
22:35

Social media is the ultimate double-edged sword. A great opportunity for communication but also a tool for trolls to attack businesses they are unhappy with (warranted or not).

According to America's Crisis Management Guru Jim Lukaszewski, there are three steps to managing a social media crisis: (1) Sacrifice (2) Show - Don't Tell (3) Be Transparent. (via e911.com)

Pritch and Kyle discuss the ideas behind these three steps for managing crisis but then connect specifically to social media via three key terms: (1) Call-Out Culture (2) Cancel Culture (3) Shout Out / Shaming Culture which Pritch references from an article by Richard Levick, Chairman and CEO of Levick communications and public affairs firm.

In the discussion, we also reference good examples to learn from via The Apology Impulse (book) by Cary Cooper and Sean O'Meara, the transparency of Buffer.com, Rudy Giuliani on 911 and OKC PD handling of the recent Penn Square Mall shooting. We also discuss failure examples from Wal Mart, Starbucks and (the worst of all) Twitter political shenanigans.

Building and Managing Corporate Culture
35:29

When it comes to corporate culture, #SpoilerAlert you’re probably doing it wrong. There are two major types of failure when building and maintaining corporate culture: 1) Not trying hard enough or 2) Trying too hard. Corporate culture should start from the C-Suite and work Top/Down but will continue to work best of it's managed from the bottom of the corporate ladder back toward the C-Suite Bottom/Up. On this episode, we'll explain the best theories behind building and maintaining a productive corporate culture with both good and bad examples and real-world analogies. We also have a bonus discussion about the changing ethics of certain professions that traditionally didn't advertise but are now more inclined to run commercials and ads. On every #NeoMarketing podcast, we discuss best practices, latest trends and modern techniques for professional business communications including advertising, marketing, digital channels, social media, public relations and alternative options. BONUS Video Podcast: Retail Strategy Analysis
1:38

Welcome to a BONUS VIDEO EPISODE of the #NeoMarketing podcast. We're going to spend just a couple of minutes talking very specifically about an approach that a retailer has taken that Pritch thinks he's figured out what they're doing. Here we go with the breakdown of Christmas retail by Pritch Pritchard, APR & Fellow PRSA.

The commercial we're talking about is Jared® Jewelers with a smooth R&B trio singing while a young man is pulling out a Jared box across the table from the beautiful young lady. What happens next? There's a little necklace inside, not a ring. He's not proposing to her, because it's the start of the relationship. What does he say? "Let's see where this goes."

Pritch thinks the underlying message is a new business strategy: Give somebody something at the beginning of the relationship.

The Apology Impulse
16:38

On Episode #84, Pritch will be breaking down the ideas behind a proper and improper apology from a brand, business, personality, etc.... and discussing the 6 elements of an correct apology from the book "The Apology Impulse: How the Business World Ruined Sorry and Why We Can’t Stop Saying It" by Cary Cooper and Sean O'Meara.

So how do you decide when and for what reasons your business, brand or representative should issue a public apology? What are the parameters, who decides what to do and when? On a previous podcast, we set a "One Hour" rule for starting the crisis communication protocol when a negative situation arises. With the speed of "Cancel Culture" and political correctness via social media, do you (or should you) have protocols for issuing an apology (or not issuing an apology) if your brand gets caught up in a controversy?

On every #NeoMarketing podcast, we discuss best practices, latest trends and modern techniques for professional business communications including advertising, marketing, digital channels, social media, public relations and alternative options.

Handling Crisis: The Power of Protocol (Part 2 of 2)
20:12

Part 2 of our Crisis Communication Protocol keynote that we recently presented to the YMCA National CMO Conference. We're going deep and complete on this conversation, so we did it in two parts. Presentation Slide deck: http://bit.ly/CrisisCommProtocol

Preparation for even unplanned crises starts well before the accident/incident. Time spent preparing today – in the calm – pays off in the heat of the fray. No matter how prepared you are…you will ALWAYS be surprised!

The best protection for brand reputation is a well-written crisis management protocols (not plans) containing systems for internal communications, media relations and reputation management. These protocols keep an organization viable while a media crisis (big or small) occurs and in the immediate time-frame after. Where business leaders often fail is waiting to “see how bad the damage is” before making a crisis management plan. This is a mistake. You need your protocols in place and communicated to everyone in your organization before any problem arises.

Basic Definition of a Crisis: An organizational crisis is a specific, unexpected and non- routine event or series of events that create high levels of uncertainty and simultaneously present an organization with both opportunities for and threats to its high-priority goals.

Think Strategic, Act Tactical
17:10

Everyone thinks of marketing by tactics: ads, commercials, social media, online video, email, etc…. But tactical execution without strategic planning is just busy work and a potential waste of time, money or opportunity. You have to work smart before you work hard.

How do you know you're being strategic? Are you keeping the (metaphorical) Big Picture in mind, planning for 50 years from now, 25 years. 10 years, 18 months, next quarter, etc….? If so, you're planning strategically. If not, you just being tactical. You need both, but strategy always comes first, dictates how tactical execution will happen and takes the most experience to do well. Strategy comes from the top, delegated to the operational team for tactical execution.

On the tactical side, we discuss how to best maximize marketing effort and budget with 3 tips that anyone can utilize.

Finally, we connect strategy, tactics and measurement for a positive cycle of marketing maximization.

Bonus: Kyle explains how to use the Gary Vaynerchuk 80% / 20% concept with practical tips for execution.

Addressing Rumors In The Digital Age
11:57

One of the most damaging things in the world is an unfounded rumor. Personal and professional reputations, businesses and brands have been destroyed by rumor. In the past, you had days or even weeks to confront rumors, but in 2019 you have hours or even minutes to push back on rumors, gossip and hearsay.

So, what's the best formula for doing that? This week, Pritch goes way back to 1946 to the basic ideas behind the classic Allport and Postman "Study of Rumor" to give us some guidance that can be applied today.

Like all things crisis communication management, addressing rumor is a manageable task when planned ahead of need and with active protocols for maximum effectiveness.

Avoiding PR Tone Deafness
9:21

Most business decision makers understand the need for a positive brand voice when it comes to advertising and public relations, but too many are tone deaf in response to negative media attention. We discuss several high profile examples from the world of high fashion that have been in the news recently.

Pritch defines brand tone deafness as: "A lack of situational awareness and/or understanding of the business environment." So how can you protect your business from brand tone deafness? We'll tell you.

Amongst other tactical advice, we will discuss thinking like the consumer, not a content creator, not falling in love with your ideas until being tested by others and the "12 year old boy" rule. What's that? Listen to find out.

Business Adaptability
6:00

We're on the road this week in Washington DC but, the show must go on! The is a prime example of how the key to modern business is adaptability. Like the saying goes "Adapt or Die". Business practices that have worked in the past don't necessarily work in 2019 (and beyond).

Changes in the economy, technology, consumer attention, competition, communication, etc.... have all created opportunities for success is your adaptable and open to change as needed. If your attitude is correct, you can find the right tools, techniques and strategies to take advantage of change, not be crushed by it.

Shout-outs to the reason we're in DC this week, our new clients The American Academy of Diplomacy (AAD). We're working with two AAD podcasts American Diplomat and The General and the Ambassador to reach a broader public in the American heartland while developing engaged audiences and a sustainable business model.

We recording this episode from The Wink Hotel, a great place to stay in DC. Thus, proving our adaptability and good taste in travel arrangements.

On each episode of the #NeoMarketing podcast, The Golding Group partners Pritch Pritchard, APR and Kyle Golding briefly (12-15 mins.) discuss best practices, latest trends and modern techniques for professional business communications including advertising, marketing, digital channels, social media, public relations and alternative options.

Our goal is to be educational, informative and (hopefully) entertaining.

The Value Of Self-Worth In Your Career And Life
12:51

We begin a little explicit this week, but it's for a good reason. So many people need to stop letting BS (from others and in your own head) stop you or even slow you down from setting goals and then pursuing excellence. Don't wrap your whole self-identity in your job title, pay scale, awards or other external situations because there are way too many dynamics out of your control.

If you're a working professional, you have (or eventually will) been fired, laid off, let go, not asked back or (often the case of marketing departments) had the workforce reduction that included you. It happens to everyone, but that first setback hurts a lot more than the second, third, etc....

This temporary setback is not the end of your career pursuits, potential success or personal happiness. It's more like a speed bump on your life travels. The best person doesn't always get the job, but that just doesn't equal you being an awful employee or person. Don't let any single setback kill your dreams and desire to succeed. Kyle and Pritch discuss and provide examples from their careers you can learn from.

Personality, Character or Gaffe? Social Media Tone.
12:55

We discuss a very specific social media post from a major brand that completely misses the mark (and why). Some things don't translate so well on social media, like humor and sarcasm. A great example is this tweet from the UPS Store at Christmas (2018): "If your child addresses a letter to the North Pole, you can leave it with us. We do shredding."

The problem(s) with this tweet are many. First, it's not authentic to the UPS and UPS Store brand. Second, the tone and attitude do not match the typical UPS customer. Third, the attempt to create a selling point of a holiday, when the brand is better known for shipping on that holiday is misinformed. Fourth, the timing was all wrong. Christmas is for shipping, but the upcoming tax season is for shredding. Finally, the UPS Store is just trying too hard here. Pritch and Kyle discuss these points (in detail) and add a few more insights as well.

Presentation Tools For Communication Pros
14:01
On this episode, Pritch is sharing his favorite presentation tool for PR professionals to use during crisis management situations. The system is called THE THREE MINUTE DRILL developed by Jim Lukaszewski. "The Three Minute Drill is a compact, direct process for giving those you help focused, accurate, and complete information – framed in a strategic way – from which to choose a course of action." The full system can be found here: https://www.e911.com/three-minute-drill/ Pritch and Kyle go through each of the 6 steps and explain the How and Why of this well-developed thought process for communicating with important decision-makers in your organization. Crisis Communications: Time And Response
15:12
Ep58: The biggest questions in Crisis Communications are 1. Do you respond at all? and 2. What time frame works best? This week, #TheProfessor Pritch provides the definitive answer for both questions. From there, we both discuss When, Why and How of managing each aspect of Crisis Communication. We also challenge PR and communication professionals to proactively develop the relationships, mentors and connections necessary to continually grow yourself in your chosen career field. But, we also give ideas and tips on how to develop your professional skills and connections from beginner to expert.  On each episode of the #NeoMarketing podcast, The Golding Group partners Pritch Pritchard, APR and Kyle Golding briefly (15-20 mins.) discuss best practices, latest trends and modern techniques for professional business communications including advertising, marketing, digital channels, social media, public relations and alternative options. Alternative Business Models
26:02
Today we're discussing many the alternatives to traditional B2B, B2C and B2G business models that exist in 2018. We also have a special guest interview with Mark Masters, CEO of Chloeta Fire detailing his journey from humble beginnings to major success via a business incubator. After that, our CEO Kyle Golding will tell you his prediction for the most important business activity for 2019.  Pritch and Kyle discuss the various ways people can start and operate a side-hustle, startup or small business (that can become a big business) which are often non-standard business models. Some of this discussion includes SaaS, Social Media, Twitch, YouTube, Podcast and disruptions to the food service industry - plus many other ideas and options.  Chloeta Fire is an Oklahoma based 8(a)-certified Native American B2G firm providing mission-critical program and complex project support with elite professionals. This includes combating and preventing wildfires, emergency management, environmental consulting and infrastructure management. CEO Mark Masters tells us about how Chloeta Fire began (in a dirt floor barn) and how they have gained huge national success after graduating from the Moore Norman Technology Incubator just a few years ago. https://www.chloeta.com/ Finally, we end the show on a bold prediction for the most important business trend in 2019. You don't want to miss that. The Correlations of Starting With Why
16:01
Continuing on from our previous discussions of Starting With Why (with of course reference back to Simon Sinek) this week we discuss not only Starting With Why but the strategy and logical conclusions based on our audience as to how to best deliver the message of “Why”. Pritch derives an academic corollary with his next question “Does it make sense?” for the audience. This can be obvious or not, but you need to ask the question before moving forward. We dive deep and spend 16 full minutes breaking down theory along with examples in the media today from Dominos Pizza (street paving) and Arby’s with a bonus Burger King beat down as well. Disrupting The Music Industry
15:27
The power of audio started with radio, commercial jingles and the record business. But we don't listen to, buy, share or promote records the same way we once did. The music industry is prime for disruption by the very artist that supports it now. The system was always rigged against musicians in favor of the record companies. It's time the artist took it back. The latest advances in recording technology, mobile devices, digital storage and social media promotion are flipping the music business model. The cost of production, distribution, audience development and cross-promotional opportunities can pay off big for artists willing to take the chance and operate in a new way.  You don't need a record deal to get attention today. You don't need a label to get on radio or TV. You don't need traditional radio or TV to build a fan base. You don't need to be Beyoncé to be super successful. You can control the cost, the price for fans, the profit and the artistry if your willing to take a long-term business approach to brand-building your music career. So let's talk about it. (Rap Devil pun intended). Why Start With Why
14:15
On show 2 of our second podcast year, we revisit a common theme now that Pritch is reading Simon Sinek's book "Start With Why". The guys discuss the motivation behind great business decision-making and how not knowing "Why" most often leads to bad thought processes. Plenty of examples and tips for incorporating these ideas into any business, non-profit or brand. The reason behind the #NeoMarketing podcast and each of the co-host motivation is also discussed in detail. Each episode, The Golding Group partners Pritch Pritchard, APR and Kyle Golding briefly (15-20 mins.) discuss best practices, latest trends and modern techniques for professional business communications including advertising, marketing, digital channels, social media, public relations and alternative options. The Power Of Sound In Business Communication
20:59
Welcome to year two of the NeoMarketing podcast. This is our first biweekly episode. New episodes of the show on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month. Today we're going to discuss the power of sound in modern communication. We’re talking about podcasts, passive audio, “smart” devices and other audio cues marketing, advertising, public relations and communications professional should utilize.  The old ways are out! New technologies like smartphones, streaming device and voice-activated assistants have changed the way we gain and keep the attention of audiences. Business is all about adaptation. That now includes adding audio, but not your father's (or grandfather's) am/fm radio. Podcasts are back as serious tools. Lots of loyalty being created by podcast sponsorship. Utilize podcast to tell your story, reach an audience without advertising. Passive delivery and selective targeting make for content opportunities to let people understand who you are and what you do. Tell your story. Create deeper dialogue and connect with audiences via digital channels for selective topics.  Let your audience get to know the people involved in your business. Create a podcast that is simple or complex based on your brand. Podcast sponsorship is influencer marketing with a twist. Audio creates new ways to create conversations with new target audiences. How does that change the idea of PR? According to Pritch, PR is more important now than ever before. The strategy behind PR tool is what’s important to incorporate. So the questions we have for you are:  • How are you going to communicate in 2018? • How do you pay attention to your audience?  • How are you going to communicate your message the way your audience wants, not the way you want it? We recommend you start experimenting with audio soon. All this, plus a bonus Simon Senik reference.  Each episode, The Golding Group partners Pritch Pritchard, APR and Kyle Golding briefly (15-20 mins.) discuss best practices, latest trends and modern techniques for professional business communications including advertising, marketing, digital channels, social media, public relations and alternative options. Advocacy As A Business Communications Tool
10:44
Advocacy has become increasingly effective as a Marketing, Public Relations and Audience Development tool. But, this is not a one-size-fits-all idea. There are plenty of ways to incorrectly utilize advocacy that might cause more harm (to your business) than good. On today's podcast, we provide pros/cons plus examples of good and bad execution. This is episode #52. We celebrate a full year of the #NeoMarketing Podcast. As of the first week in September, this podcast will switch from a once-a-week format to biweekly on the first and third WEDNESDAY of the month. Business Communication Definitions
11:44
Too often, people confuse the different disciplines of business communications: Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations. On this episode, Kyle and Pritch will clear up the confusion with real-world definitions of each word plus how each is implemented and build the communication process. Information everyone needs to know, not just the marketing department. But we're not just talking about definitions. We discuss how each communication segment is used, in what order and how they collaborate to deliver effective messaging. We also provide advice on how to avoid mistakes in branding, creating campaigns and strategy. Perception vs. Reality
12:24
Pritch points out the age-old concept "perception is reality" in today's news for Public Relations missteps with tips for a more effective approach to communications in less-than-perfect conditions. Thanks to modern technology, 24/7 news cycles and peer-to-peer communications we all need to be better prepared and ready to go when bad news hits your business, non-profit or persona. It's all a matter of context, perspective and information. No spinning, but telling your side of the story.  Kyle tosses out the question of "which is better?" an In-house public relations team or the impartial third-party PR pros. After a bit of debate, they both agree that the most important aspects are having people in place who can and will tell you the truth plus being ready to put that advice into action and not wait for the issue to (hopefully) go away. Make sure someone on your team is willing to "tell the emperor he has no clothes" along with the great advice "don't bring me problems, bring me solutions".  This is episode #50. In 2 more weeks, we will celebrate a full year of 52 episodes of the #NeoMarketing Podcast. As of the first week in September, this podcast will switch from a once-a-week format to biweekly on the first and third weeks of the month. Business Models: Adapt Or Die!
10:10
That might be a bit dramatic, but not too far off the mark. The way business gets done today is rapidly changing and evolving. This includes every type of business, not just technology. So how do you keep up? By breaking your own model and doing things in new ways. Check your ego and serve your audience. Kyle and Pritch break down the how and why, with examples and thought process behind successful business model adaptation.  This is episode #49. The Common Mistake Of Starting With Tactics (Before Strategy)
8:32
Building off last week's podcast (Ep45: Strategy Starts With Why) we're breaking down the differences between strategy, objectives and tactics from the beginning. Literally. Too many people want to start with tactics just to get something done or checked off their To-Do list. Big mistake! So, what's the right order, the plan components and how does all of this add up to a strategy that is effective and efficient? How does this approach help a business grow today and long-term? Strategy Starts With “Why”
9:06
Too often, really smart people running a business or non-profit organization focus on day-to-day tactics without creating a strategy first. If you will put in the time and effort to craft (or adjust) your strategy before moving through the process then you have a much higher chance at positive results.  What is the #1 reason so many business leaders fail to work the process in the right way? Too much focus on what you're doing to sell your product / service (act now) and too little focus on why you're doing it (conceptual). Today, we discuss putting the Why first and the proper process from start to finish for effective, efficient marketing with great ROI. Plus, we have a bonus business book recommendation on strategic thinking. Finding Target Stakeholders

Adaptive Business Models For Success
9:10
The key to business success? Not being trapped in the "how we have always done it" mentality or business model. The path the victory is full of twist and turns, you need to be prepared to adjust as you move forward. Technology is changing how business gets done every day. Not just tech businesses, but all businesses. The need for adaptability has never been greater.  So how can you commit to a strategy and business plan if you need to change it tomorrow? By creating measured flexibility in your plan and not holding hard and fast to old ways of "how business goes" from years past. Even if you wrote your business plan just a few years ago, it still might be in need of updating and adjustments. Creating a plan is a good idea and staying as consistent as possible is also a good idea. But being overly rigid to your plan without adjustments is a recipe for disaster. Even worse, when you hold to your original plan for too long due to ego, vanity or hubris of the decision makers.  Pay attention to your numbers, customer feedback, trends and even the competition as ways to determine when and where to make changes as needed. Do NOT hold your company back because of old business plans. Subscribe to the NeoMarketing podcast on iTunes http://bit.ly/TheGoldingGroup and videos on YouTube http://bit.ly/GoldingGroupYouTube. Chasing Success
8:12
What is the key to success? We'll tell you on this episode of the #NeoMarketing Podcast. The topic was inspired by an episode of the #SaturdayMorningHustle podcast our CEO Kyle Golding produces each week. www.saturdaymorninghustle.com What is the definition of success, and what will you if you reach your own success goals? How will you react, how would success change you and what does you being successful have to do with other people? All items we discuss this week. How would being a success in business, in your community or your personal life change you? What would you be able to do, for yourself or others, that you can't do now? What doors do you expect success to open for you?  We answer these questions and give examples of how very successful people create value for others by sharing their influence, knowledge or good name.  Subscribe to the NeoMarketing podcast on iTunes http://bit.ly/TheGoldingGroup and videos on YouTube http://bit.ly/GoldingGroupYouTube. The Value Of Membership In Professional Organizations
10:17
This week, Pritch is motivated by a recent visit to OKC from PRSA CEO Joe Truncale, APR and National Chair Tony D’Angelo, APR on a "Listening Tour" of the US concerning membership in PRSA by young professionals.  Pritch and Kyle discuss the impact on a career from continuing education, networking and challenging yourself by interacting with your professional peers. Not just fresh out of school and low-level employees, but all professionals can benefit from memberships. At the same time CEO's, Directors, etc. need to be encouraging (if not paying for) employees to participate in professional organizations based on career field.  Bonus advice for our Chief Strategic Idealist: "If you are going to become the best at what you do, the CEO, the #1 superstar in any industry you have to push yourself, compete with other professionals, learn from them and not be afraid you might be out-shined by anyone else." Shoutout this week to such as OKC Ad Club (AAF), PRSA OKC, IABC Central Oklahoma, AMA OKC plus we announce our upcoming podcast series with the Oklahoma Venture Forum.  Subscribe to the NeoMarketing podcast on iTunes http://bit.ly/TheGoldingGroup and videos on YouTube http://bit.ly/GoldingGroupYouTube. Positioning For Small Business
11:33
There are two major mistakes businesses make: 1. failure to position correctly and 2. attempting to attract too broad of an audience. "Everyone" is not your audience. Kyle and Pritch break down how to avoid these pitfalls. Positioning is finding the best way for your business to compete with others in the market by finding and aligning your business strengths in a competitive scenario against the areas of weakness for your competition. This gives the advantage to you. Finding your position in the market is a lot of work, but well worth it. Failure to do this work often results in closing up shop. Audience is not defined as "everyone" but only as those most likely to engage your business. It's not about being "better" it's about being different. Set yourself apart via differentiation. Only attempt to draw an audience of those who want what you offer, the way you offer it. Be as distinct, direct and different as possible. Let the rest of the potential audience go. Never spend time, money or effort trying to attract the attention of anyone outside the very core of your best, highly targeted audience. If they show up, bonus.  BONUS QUESTION: Both Kyle and Pritch give the best piece of advice they each received directly from a mentor. Both of them have very different but helpful tidbits of wisdom to share. Conversion Copywriting with J Bryant Creative
7:46
We have a special guest on today's podcast. Jennifer Bryant Robbins is a conversion copywriting expert who started her professional life as an accountant before transitioning to creative services by forming J Bryant Creative in 2011. Jennifer has a specific approach to creating effective copy for websites, blogs and sales funnel collateral. She says "Content tells, Copy sells and Conversion Copy is copy on steroids". She starts with research, then writing and then testing and validation. Too many people just toss copy on a page a hope for the best. General copy tells people what you do, but conversion copy has a specific role or goals to accomplish. It's "selling with a purpose" according to Jennifer. You can find out more about conversion copy services J Bryant Creative at http://jbryantcreative.com or email her at jennifer@jbryantcreative.com or call her directly at (405) 353-COPY.  Subscribe to the NeoMarketing podcast on iTunes http://bit.ly/TheGoldingGroup and videos on YouTube http://bit.ly/GoldingGroupYouTube. Taking Emotions Out of Crisis Communications
7:05
One of the most important elements of crisis communication management is delivering important information in a professional manner, without emotions or additional judgment. Always start with the truth. Facts are your best defense against negative opinions.  If you are going to be a communications professional, entrepreneur or business decision maker then you really need very thick skin. Overly emotional responses are less efficient and less effective. Slow down, take your time and get it right. Authentic empathy is appreciated, but don't get lost in your job of communicating facts and pertinent information. You will have time for personal feelings after the job is done and the situation resolved. Other tactics to incorporate include staff training, crisis protocols and compartmentalization of information and actions in order to stay focused and factual. The best crisis management is to avoid a crisis altogether(or making a small crisis bigger). If you don't have experienced crisis communication managers on your team or a working relationship with third-party professionals, consider reaching out to the local chapter of PRSA or a nearby university for support during a stressful communication period.  During a recent misinformation campaign against one of our non-profit clients, The Golding Group CEO Kyle Golding found himself personally agitated at the amount of misinformed and unrelated individuals interjecting rumors, false information and assumptions into an already misconstrued situation. The stress put on the individuals who work for the NP org. added to his concern. Luckily, everyone's professional training and pre-set protocols ended the situation before any damage was done with some simple but direct communication.  Subscribe to the NeoMarketing podcast on iTunes http://bit.ly/TheGoldingGroup and videos on YouTube http://bit.ly/GoldingGroupYouTube. Branding For Start-Ups
10:21
This week on the #NeoMarketing podcast we will be talking about "Branding For Start-Ups" from the recent presentations by our CEO Kyle Golding for the Stillwater, OK stop of the Paul Singh #ResultsJunkies North America Tech Tour and the NW-OKC Chamber #MarketingMonday workshops. "Everyone wants to know about Marketing and Advertising for business, but Branding is step #1. It's where you start. There are a lot of misconceptions still about Branding. Especially when it comes to Start-Ups. Everyone wants to get so focus on the product and the idea. They want to launch so fast. They just want to get out in the world. Branding is ESSENTIAL for a solid launch, connecting with the right audience, getting the right feedback early so that you can position your product or service correctly to continue to draw the right audiences in the future." - Kyle Golding Recorded in the NEW podcast production studio on the campus of the University of Oklahoma. The lines between the disciplines continue to blur, so universities are adapting so they can best provide the skill sets today's student/tomorrow's professionals need to achieve career success in the "business world" after college.  Subscribe to the NeoMarketing podcast on iTunes http://bit.ly/TheGoldingGroup and videos on YouTube http://bit.ly/GoldingGroupYouTube . The Business Ethics Of Public Relations
11:23
High ethics are essential to any business, non-profit or other organization in the modern information age. Being a professional, we have to hold ourselves to high standards to honest business practices. Your Marketing and Public Relations teams have an additional level of ethical consideration when communicating with the public, stakeholders, employees, etc.  This week, Pritch and Kyle break down the pros/cons of ethics and decision-making. Every communication professional will face situations where someone wants you to break your ethical code. What will you do, how will you correct the situation? Being ahead of this conversation with education, collaboration and professionalism can keep your business out of the (negative) media spotlight.  Subscribe to the NeoMarketing podcast on iTunes http://bit.ly/TheGoldingGroup and videos on YouTube http://bit.ly/GoldingGroupYouTube . Crisis Communication Management
17:50
The professor of PR Pritch Pritchard, APR is breaking down the essential business topic everyone needs but never wants to talk about - Crisis Communications Management. Our discussions include creating protocols not plans, training and empowering your staff to react in case of a crisis. The key is preparation, training and reinforcement. All things you must do before a crisis happens, not as it's happening. Training should include reviews, table-top exercises and real-life scenario role-playing.  The next most important aspect of crisis communication is never, ever spinning to make your situation better than it really is. Like Pritch says: "Bad news doesn't age well" and "Go ugly first" to get the bad news out of the way. Never mislead or omit details you know to be true. Have a selected communication professional pre-designated as your spokesperson (with a plan B and plan C) speak in a single voice for clarity. Winning back the public trust will be hard if you are secretive or too optimistic in your communication. Be realistic.  Pritch suggest 3 things to always include in crisis communications. 1. What you know 2. What you do not know 3. What you are doing to find out more Finally, make sure you crisis communications, which includes risk assessment, written protocol and training program is prepared, administered and audited by an experienced professional. This is too important to leave in the hands of an amateur.  Our special guest this week is Linda Wesley, President of IABC-OKC. She drops by to talk about their upcoming events and membership benefits. Media Relationships
15:07
This week, Pritch wants to show some love to earned media. In particular, creating relationships with media sources and how to professionally pitch your story ideas. The key is doing a good job sending topics, news releases and story ideas with an actual "News Peg" to it and not everything your client wants "news" for. The relationship should work both ways, with you giving your media contacts tips on newsworthy events and stories that have nothing to do with you or your clients. Just a win for them. Special Guest: This week, President of PRSA-OKC Kristin Ewing, APR drops by to talk about current and upcoming events at PRSA. http://prsaokc.com/index.php Bonus Question: What's the oddest thing you have ever been asked to do for client or boss? Audience First Business Model Structure
11:20
"Too many businesses today are set up to benefit themselves and not their audience. It should be the other way around." To compete or be disruptive, business should be providing products/service in a way that benefits the client/customer first. Then, find a way to accomplish that with a profit margin (every business has to make a profit or die) and you now have a viable business model. Give them what they want, how they want it! Learn the lessons of old-school cable companies and cell phone providers. Don't force your customer to do business the way you want, but in a way they want. Build brand loyalty and repeat business through your attitude and structure. Develop real audience profiles and then use that information to be a better business option. Switch the way you think, serving your audience first, to benefit you (more) later. Think long-term, not short. It's harder up front, but so much better and more stable in the long term. It's simply a better way to do business.  Bonus Question: What TV shows, publications, websites, podcast and video shows do you follow for business advice? For Pritch, industry publications like PRSA and Ad Week. For Kyle, Shark Tank, The Profit and Gary V. He's also a big fan of The Pursuit by Kelsey Humphreys on YouTube. Employee Communications as a PR Function
14:01
Employee communications have always been an HR issue, but why? PR and marketing professionals are better equipped to drive internal employee communications. Employees need to know the company mission, position, offers and value statement. Employees are your greatest ambassadors. Word-of-mouth from employees has huge value in-person, online and via social media. A company stands for what the employees stand for. The keys are building relationships and engagement. Can you mid-level employees do a better job with internal communications? Probably so. Your PR team can help. Often, companies with rapid growth (existing and startups) lose their effectiveness due to a lack of internal communication structure. Like our Golding Group partner Felicite Moorman says: "Death By Success" from rapid growth. The lack of employee communications is as detrimental as gaps in internal structure, inventory or cash flow. Special guest Alyssa Murphy drops by to discuss AMA-OKC, our local chapter of the American Marketing Association. Setting Business Goals in 2018
11:35
It's that time in the new year when we set resolutions for ourselves. In business, we set goals to track our successes (or lack thereof). This allows a business to do more of what works and less of what doesn’t. Just because your business is profitable, doesn’t mean there isn't room for improvement. Side Note: Almost no one is doing 5-year strategic plans anymore. Business moves too fast today. Prepare a 12-18 month plan with a 36-month max. When setting goals, never start with tactics (the fun stuff). Instead, use these 3 concepts for setting the proper goals.
  • Obtainable: Set your goals high, but not so high you cannot obtain them. Set an additional “stretch” goal to push yourself but in a realistic way. Factors within and outside your business will affect you throughout the year. Don't just set goals against your primary competition, but all discretionary spending options.
  • Measureable: According to Pritch, measurement is the most important part. If you can’t quantify it via math, it’s not measurable. You have to start somewhere (X) and end the year somewhere else (+/-X). Goals need to be connected to audience and market factors such as share percentage, scope, etc.
  • Specific: You can’t measure something if you don't set a specific goal. "More Sales" is not specific, but "increase sales by X% or $X" is. The other aspect of being specific is setting a timeline and budget. What do you want to accomplish, when and how much will you spend? Only do those things that have positive ROI. You need to be profitable to survive.
Once you have taken these three steps, the strategy and tactics will be obvious. Now, divide up your set budget based on impact, priority, etc. then execute! Bonus question: On a personal note, what’s your New Years Resolution? Subscribe to the NeoMarketing podcast on iTunes and videos on YouTube. Perfection is the Mortal Enemy of Good Enough
8:49
In today's market, speed is essential. Waiting for the perfect scenario to launch your blog, vlog, podcast or startup is a huge mistake. Ideas are great, but execution is the key to success. Consistent delivery of information is more valuable than a flawless launch. There is no "perfect" time for anything. Even Gary V. and Casey Neistat had to learn as they worked. Technology is making it possible to bring the best ideas to reality fast. We started the #NeoMarketing podcast with no real idea what would happen or when. With only 20 episodes posted, the connections and interactions have been amazing. Keep watching and asking questions. Authentic Communication
9:33
Authenticity is an ever-increasing element of modern marketing. Advertisers are using community content and social causes to draw attention, such as the recent anti-bullying ads from Burger King, but is it authentic concern or a disguised sales pitch? Did the ad connect with the right audience as intended? Is it authentic to the BK brand? Why or why not? So what can BK do to prove the authenticity of a campaign like this? By sharing background, decision making process, planning and collaborators. The Golding Group partners discuss how to stay authentic to your brand by being open, transparent and honest about the good and bad. Show the "warts and all" as the saying goes. Don't forget, you can't fake the funk. The public sees through deception and dirty tricks. Bonus: Pritch is apparently afraid of the Burger King and finds the TV character to be a bully of sorts. Innovation In Communication
9:41
How are communications professionals utilizing new innovations in technology, tactics and strategy? You have to begin the conversation with social media. Not only the platforms themselves but the engagement, paid placement and analytic tools on the “backside” of Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc. The “big” data that can be collected and utilized is providing tremendous innovation, but is still in its infancy with so much more potential to come. How do you put a number on relationships? Social media is innovating the way we build relationships with clients, stakeholders, supporters, etc. It’s not a 1-to-1 sales scenario like traditional advertising. We also discuss innovations in thought process, such as the current definition of Public relations and Edelman's theory of Communications Marketing (as opposed to marketing communications). "There are three governing principles of communications marketing according to Edelman: Evolve, Promote and Protect. This is a very different way of thinking for the advertising, marketing, public relations profession." https://www.edelman.com/insights/intellectual-property/the-rise-of-communications-marketing/ Other innovations to be considered include the current size, portability and low cost of Audio / Video production equipment. Being able to produce a video (just like this video) on a laptop or iPad in a remote location was not possible just a few years ago. The speed at which we can set up, produce content and distribute without cost barriers is empowering to professional and non-professional communicators alike. The ability to plan, schedule and measure analytics of customized content for multiple channels now allows for smart, informative information to reach larger, broader and more diverse audiences. Add mobile, wireless and stream delivery and the communications industry is truly benefiting from current innovations. Special thanks to Sarah Zubair for the clip for the OU PRSSA Diversity in PR panel discussion. Check out her killer video production work: SarahSeeks.com and YouTube. Diversity In Corporate Culture
10:29
The communications industry has done a pretty good job of addressing gender, racial and ethnic diversity and inclusion over the last 10-15 years, but more work still needs to be done in areas such as age, experience, backgrounds and diversity of thought. Diversity creates value in organizations due to the mix of thought processes that come along with different life experiences. But how can organizations how conversations about sensitive subjects like race, gender, sexual orientation or politics in a positive manner? The answer is an open corporate culture. But, this culture will not happen overnight. Business leaders must foster open attitudes over time while allowing for dialog and challenges without repercussions. The best employees are drawn to and remain loyal to diverse, inclusive organizations with a culture of positivity and open-mindedness. Clip for the OU PRSSA Diversity and Inclusion panel 11/13/17 (referenced in the first minute and again at 9:48) featuring Kyle Golding discussion deeper areas of focus for diversity and inclusion.  Special thanks to the OU Innovation Hub on the Norman, OK campus. Big Data and How To Use It
6:40
"Big Data" was a major topic at the recent PRSA ICON Conference. The Golding Group partners Pritch Pritchard, APR and Kyle Golding discuss exactly what the term Big Data means and how startups, small business and corporations use information in different ways.  Ultimately, Big Data is research for understanding your customer and target stakeholders as part of the marketing 2-way conversation. Ep9 Digital Marketing Is Really Just Public Relations
14:48
We revisit a theory our CEO Kyle Golding proposed during a speech to the Little Rock, AR chapter of PRSA in 2012, that the basis of all current digital marketing is public relations. Social media, blogging, vlogging, etc.... backed by content, influencer, inbound, relationship-based and/or push+pull marketing strategy is essentially PR. Solidly written core messaging, consistent across all digital and traditional media, that creates a truthful impression of a business, non-profit, event, etc.... currently called digital marketing has traditionally been public relations. The tools, channels and delivery methods have changed but the core ideas are based on PR. Story, relationship and audience without a hard sales pitch - all basis of traditional PR and current digital marketing (when executed well). Social media and public relations are most effective when there is an honest transfer of information without a direct call-to-action. People do not want to be "sold".

The Golding Group partners Kyle Golding and Pritch Pritchard break down this theory and discuss the ideas in depth with clips from the original presentation from 2012: Kyle Golding explains how creativity and public relations work together to create some of today's hottest marketing trends. 7 minutes from his 45-minute presentation to PRSA Little Rock in October 2012. Unfortunately, crisis communication planning has become essential for business, non-profits, events and government agencies in the current age of scandals, weather events and terrorism. The speed of today's 24-hour news cycle and social media reporting makes preparation and protocol for crisis communications an absolute necessity. The Golding Group partners discuss when and how to manage information flow during a crisis that directly affects your business. We also discuss when to comment or stay out of the public discussion of current news events not directly related to your business. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone currently dealing with and affected by storms, wildfires, mass shootings, terrorist attacks and other disasters. Ep4 How To Hire, Fire and Collaborate With The Right Clients
9:47
We discuss how to say "Yes" or "No" to prospective clients and how to let a current client go when it's just not working. A business relationship is like any other relationship, with both parties deserving respect, consideration and clearly defined roles. When that can't be achieved or your client is just not the right "fit" you should end that working relationship, otherwise know as firing the client. These things happen in business all the time, but it's nerve-racking the first time you say No or fire an existing client.

Bonus Question: Have you ever fired a client due to an ethical issue? Both Pritch and Kyle have great stories about refusing to break their own ethical code even if it costs money, a job or business relationship. Subscribe to the podcast on iTunes or Spreaker or YouTube
