Why is God Father Rather than Mother?

One of the popular criticisms of Christianity is that the Bible treats women as "less than" men. The Scriptures, so the argument goes, seem to privilege men and "maleness," asking women to cover their hair, calling Eve a "helper," and even going so far as to identify the God of the universe as male—"Father." How can we make sense of this seeming sexism? In this rebroadcast of an episode from October 2017, Jo and Vince help unpack some of the misperceptions surrounding how women are viewed and valued in Scripture. Particularly relevant as we honor mothers this weekend in the US, Jo and Vince discuss pictures of God in the Bible, and the fact that God reveals himself in maternal ways we might not always realize.

Questions Asked in This Episode:

  1. "Did God make sexism on purpose? For example, Jesus and God are male, Eve is the bad guy in our story, etc."
  2. "If we followed everything in the Bible, should I be wearing a headscarf?"
  3. "In Heaven, are there genders?"

Why Would God Allow Diseases and Other Natural Evils?

With the world in the midst of a global pandemic that has already claimed more than 150,000 lives, the question of "natural" evil is at the forefront of many people's minds. Why does God allow bad things to happen to innocent people? If God truly exists, why is there evil, and why is there suffering? Isn't He capable of stopping it? In this timely rebroadcast of an episode from November 2017, Vince and Jo discuss the problem of suffering due to "natural" causes, and how we might make sense of this suffering in light of a God who Himself entered into suffering for our sake.

You can read Vince's recent article responding to this issue here.

Questions Asked in This Episode: 1) "People often explain moral evil to be the result of our free will. But if that is the case, then how do you explain natural evil (ex. Earthquakes, tsunamis, and things like that)?"

2) "If God exists, why would He allow things like cancer in children to occur?"

Easter and the Resurrection

Jesus' resurrection can sound crazy to skeptics and many don't take it seriously. Does it really matter if Jesus was raised from the dead or not? What evidence is there and why is the resurrection so important? In preparation for the Easter holiday on Sunday, Vince and Jo Vitale look at the compelling evidence for the resurrection and explain why it was an event that changed everything.

Where Does Environmental Care Fit into the Christian Faith?

Environmentalism and environmental justice are at the forefront of many of our cultural conversations today. Christians are commanded by God to steward the Earth, but faith communities are frequently charged with environmental neglect. Is there a way to reconcile environmental concern with belief in God? If God is going to take care of it all in the end, why should we worry about it? This week, Jo and Vince discuss the biblical logic behind environmental justice as a form of love for God and love for neighbor.

Question Asked in this Episode: "Is there a way to bridge caring for the Earth with a belief in God?"

Was Jesus Racist? Unpacking Matthew 15

Understanding Scripture and its teachings can often be confusing, and even unsettling. Even when we try to interpret certain stories or letters charitably, we can frequently find ourselves bewildered. How do we deal with these difficult passages? This week, Vince and Jo consider a question about Jesus' interaction with the Canaanite or "Syrophoenician," woman (recorded in Matthew 15:21-28 and Mark 7:24-30), where Christ refers to a suffering woman and the Canaanite people she is part of as "dogs." How can we make sense of such seemingly harsh words and treatment? How do we square this with a Christ we say is full of love for the downtrodden? What is going on in this story? Is Jesus racist?

Question Asked in This Episode: "For quite some time now, I've been developing a workshop that focuses on improving race relations within the church. As the workshop primarily focuses on Scripture in the Bible that deals with how God wants us to think about and to respond to racism, classism, and sexism, among other things, there is one passage that continues to perplex me as I study these topics: In Matthew chapter 15 verses 21-28—the story of the Syrophoenician woman—even though Jesus compliments her amazing faith, at face value it can appear as if he is also insulting and making racial slurs against her when referring to his own people, Israel, as children, and the woman's people as dogs."

Does God Only Love Me Because He Has To?

Among the many immeasurable attributes of God, Christians speak of God as being "all-loving." Yet oftentimes this raises a fear within us: Does God actually want to love us, or is He just forced to by his character? We often don't feel very lovable; does God feel the same way about us? This week, Jo and Vince discuss why God loves, and how we can be sure God's love isn't due to obligation, but is actually his genuine feeling toward his children. To read the article Jo references in this episode about Bailey's story, click here.

Question Asked in This Episode: "Does God love me because He has to? I know that as a child of God He loves me, but does He love me because his character demands it, or does He actually want to love me? I've been thinking a lot about this lately and I can't seem to accept the fact that God loves me because He wants to. Can you help me understand God's love for his children?"

If God Makes Us "Very Good," Why Are There Birth Defects?

The idea that we are "perfect just the way we are" is difficult to square, both from a biblical perspective and also in light of the lived experience of so many people. How can we talk about "perfection" when human suffering surrounds us and when we ourselves are confronted with our own imperfection? This week, Vince and Jo are joined by Naomi Zacharias, leader of Wellspring International, RZIM's humanitarian arm devoted to helping at-risk women and children. Together they consider what it means to affirm that we were created "very good," while also recognizing that we live in a fallen world that includes disabilities and birth defects. If God makes us, how can some people be made with such physical challenges? How does Christ meet us in the midst of imperfection?

Learn more about Wellspring International here.

Question Asked in This Episode: "If God makes us, as it says in the Psalms, how can some people, like my daughter with spina bifida, be made with such physical flaws, making parts of her body unable to function?"

Is God a Bad Parent?

There has been an interesting transition over the last several decades whereby many people seem to reject God not because they don't believe He exists, but rather because they believe that He is cruel and evil, demanding obedience to his tyrannical project. What can we say to someone who believes that God is primarily interested in making his creation toe the line? How do we respond to someone who believes God is saying, "Do things my way or I'll destroy you?" This week Vince and Jo discuss the nature of relationship with God and offer some helpful and gracious ways to question the questioner whose assumptions about God, Heaven, and Hell might not line up with what Scripture teaches and what Christians actually believe.

Question Asked in This Episode: "I am debating with a young person about God. She says if God is real, he is cruel, letting any of his children burn in Hell just because they don't want to do things his way, even if they are a good person. She says it's like a parent that tells his child, 'Do things my way or I'll destroy you.' I don't know how to handle this."

If God Already Knows, Why Pray?

The Bible teaches that God is all-powerful and sovereign over his creation. But the Bible also teaches that prayer is commanded by God and is a tangible way by which we can affect ourselves and creation. How can we hold such seemingly contradictory ideas at the same time? This week, Vince is joined by Kathy Branzell, President of the National Day of Prayer Task Force, to discuss some of the practical realities of prayer in the midst of trials. What do we do when prayer seems hopeless?

Question Asked in This Episode: "A friend of mine was recently diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer at age 24, and I'm having a difficult time praying about it. I don't see the point of praying if the outcome is already determined. Prayer is something that I have always struggled with. If God is all-knowing and he has the future mapped out, what is the purpose of prayer? Does prayer really have any influence on God? In addition, if he already knows all of our thoughts and ways, as is said in Psalm 139:1-3, what is the purpose of expressing them to him verbally?"

Should We Dress (and Live) Modestly?

In modern society, the term "modesty" is often held in contempt as an outdated holdover from a bygone repressive era. Some people grew up in churches where the messages they heard concerning modesty caused shame and confusion about sexuality and the goodness of the body. In light of those hurdles, is there still any place to talk about modesty? This week, Jo and Vince discuss the biblical meaning of modesty and why this virtue, properly understood, is so profoundly important. They extend the conversation beyond a narrow view of modesty as equated with sexuality and dress, and encourage us to focus on modesty as a posture of the heart before God.

Question Asked in This Episode: "In the church community I grew up in, modesty was frequently mentioned, often in the form of stating that people who dressed immodestly ought to be ashamed of themselves. I know the Bible talks about modesty, but is it biblical to promote shame of one's own body as the motivating factor of dressing modestly?"

Politics: Why Can't We All Just Get Along?

We live in a society of constant political consciousness, where political affiliation and party commitments have even risen to the level of religious zealotry. How can Christians thoughtfully and charitably engage in politics when every party believes that they are on the correct side of history, and any disagreement with a political position is perceived as malice toward the individuals in that group? This week, Vince and Jo discuss the roots of our political conflict and point to the deeper reality at the heart of all our political strife, ultimately pointing to the God who treated his "political opponents" not as the enemies they were, but rather as inherently valuable creatures worth dying for.

Question Asked in This Episode: "I've noticed that everyone… has strong feelings and opinions toward politicians and politics. I've heard one professor say that Aristotle said that we are all political. Is there something in humans that makes us feel so strongly about politics?"

How Can Christians Be Depressed?

Depression has a long history of being misunderstood, both by the larger culture and, unfortunately, by the church. For many of us, shame and stigma can cause us to keep our struggles with mental health issues hidden from our friends, our church communities, and even from God himself. This week, Vince and Jo discuss depression and anxiety in the context of the brokenness of the world, offering some helpful ways to think about the examples of discouragement and weeping that abound in the Biblical account, and pointing to the God who is compassionate enough to sit with us in our lowest moments, and who is working to wipe away every tear as He makes all things new.

Question Asked in This Episode: "In the Bible there are examples of people being discouraged—Elijah, Job, David. Would you say that they were depressed? To summarize, my question is: How can Christians be chronically depressed? Is there a Biblical explanation for this?"

Will I Be Able to Sin in Heaven?

Christians often say they long for heaven and for the day when the battle with sin will finally be over. But, if we are no longer able to sin in heaven, does that also mean we will no longer have free will? And, if this is the case, what are the implications concerning the character of God and what heaven will actually be like?

This week, Vince and Jo delve into what it means to be free and whether or not the ability to choose between good and evil is necessary for a meaningful life in relationship with God.

Question Asked in This Episode:
"In heaven will we be able to choose evil, if not how will we still be free?"

Are we just advanced primates? Are we machines? Are we souls confined to a body, longing to escape? This week, Vince and Jo are joined by RZIM Itinerant Speaker Sharon Dirckx, whose doctoral research in the area of brain imaging informs her new book, Am I Just My Brain? The crew walks through the intricacies of one of the most important issues we face today, discussing some of the far-reaching (and often unacknowledged) implications of the claim that human beings are nothing more than the sum total of our brain waves.

Are the Lives of the Unborn of Less Importance than the Choice of the Mother?

Does autonomy and self-determination outweigh the life inside the womb? Do all children—both born and unborn—deserve the protections afforded to us as inalienable rights? This week, Jo and Vince answer a sensitive question about abortion, discussing their personal experience with their son's earliest weeks of life, the philosophical issue of when "personhood" begins, the societal implications of denying personhood to certain classes of people, and the biblical understanding of a God who loves every person and was willing to go to great lengths to give life to his children.

What Questions Led You to Faith in God?

The ways in which God pursues people are amazing in their similarities, but also in their uniqueness. Only in hindsight can many see the lengths God went to in order to reach them, and the questions that had to be answered before faith in God seemed a reasonable thing. This week, Jo and Vince talk about the questions they themselves asked that led to their personal faith in God.

What Kind of God Would Command Abraham to Sacrifice His Son Isaac?

There are few stories in the Bible more confusing than the story of God commanding Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac. To many, this story makes it seem like God is an arbitrary—and maybe even wicked—deity, demanding that people commit evil deeds in order to prove their loyalty to Him. Even for Christians, this story can push the bounds of who we understand God to be. But is this story really about blind faith and obedience to a capricious God? This week, Vince and Jo suggest a fuller context for this story and point to the God who alone provides the true sacrifice.

Are Human Beings Rational?

We live at a time where our culture seems to value scientific rationalism on the one hand, but believes truth is relative and prizes individual autonomy—even if irrational—above all else. Which is it? Are human beings ultimately nothing more than a "thinking being"? Is human nature controlled exclusively by survival instinct? And where does this leave us when we think about faith in God? This week, Vince and Jo discuss the nature of man, faith, rationality, and intuition, providing some helpful ways to think about an issue that often feels like a binary choice between faith and reason.

Question Asked in This Episode:
"Is man rational?"

Is God Ever OK with Lying?

God's attitude toward lying is clear in Scripture: lying lips are "an abomination" to the Lord (Proverbs 12:22), and Jesus calls the devil "a liar and the father of lies" (John 8:44). But what about the hard cases where it seems that one must lie to protect life? Does Scripture condone such cases, as in the biblical character Rahab's lie to rescue the spies in Jericho, or should we understand those passages in a different way? Is it possible to justify lying for the greater good, or are we running the risk of excusing the lies we wish to tell? This week, Vince and Jo tackle the thorny issue of situational ethics and the question of whether there are exceptional circumstances where lying is permitted.

How Does Prayer Work?

Prayer can be a confusing practice in the life of the Christian. Some mock it, claiming it is nothing more than deluded self-talk. Others have difficulty understanding why we need to ask God for things He already knows He will provide. For many, the seeming lack of answered prayer can cause us to doubt God's goodness, or even his existence. This week, Vince and Jo discuss the nature of prayer and suggest some helpful ways to understand how God uses it to relate to us and to work in our lives.

How Can I Serve Like Jesus without Burning Out?

As Christians we are supposed to sacrificially give of ourselves for the benefit of our neighbors without the expectation of a return. But how do we do this in a way that is healthy for us and for those around us? What do we do with the guilt we feel for not being able to be all things to all people? And what does it say about my faith if I get burnt out and feel like I can't give any more? This week, Vince and Jo talk through what it means to be creatures who have limitations, and what that might mean for a proper understanding of rest in light of a God who pours himself out on our behalf.

Question Asked in This Episode:
"In the example of Jesus it seems very clear to me that we're all called to be servants and humbly serve those around us, no matter the cost. But sometimes I find myself trying so desperately to meet the needs of everyone around me that I end up running myself into the ground, resenting the people who ask things of me and feeling like a doormat. In a culture that idolizes and commercializes 'self-care' and 'self-love,' how can we balance the counter-cultural call to serve one another while setting healthy boundaries and being realistic with ourselves about our limits. And if I believe Christ calls us to pour ourselves out for others, what does it mean about my faith if sometimes I feel like I hit the wall and can't give any more?"

How Do I Start To Talk To Others About Jesus?

Sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with others is the greatest privilege given to Christians. We are commanded to do this by Jesus himself in the Great Commission, and we have an intrinsic desire to share the same good news about the God who rescued us. Yet often we find ourselves crippled by fear and feelings of inadequacy when it comes to sharing the gospel with unbelieving members of our community. This week, Vince and Jo discuss how to begin talking to others about Jesus, offering some practical tips for conversational evangelism.

Question Asked in This Episode:
"I want to start evangelizing in my community, but I don't know how to start that conversation. Do you have specific techniques that work well to start talking to others about Jesus? Is there a list of good icebreakers that can get the conversation started?"

Is God Limited by Logic?

What is the relationship between God and logic? If God is logical, does that mean He is subservient to the laws of logic? Who is Beyond Forgiveness? A Conversation with The Rev. Hassan John

Are there sins that are so awful that God won't extend grace? How can we respond to those in our lives who have had irreparable evil perpetrated against them? Vince and Jo are joined this week by Hassan John, an Anglican minister serving in Jos, Nigeria. Jos has become a hotbed for Boko Haram terrorist activity, and Hassan's ministry gives him a unique insight into the ways in which God is working even in the midst of evil circumstances.

You can read a firsthand account from Hassan in the Wall Street Journal here: "Boko Haram Put a Bounty on my Head"

Question Asked in This Episode:
"My friend is a rape and sexual assault survivor. While discussing grace she said her issue with it was that her rapist is given the same grace as her or me. I did think about where the line is and who should decide who does or does not receive grace if we say the rapist should not receive grace, but I was at a loss for how I should respond to her in the moment in a meaningful way. How should I respond to her?"

Ask Away Classic: Are You There, God? Are You Good, God?

"How can you love such a self-centered, glory-craving God?" "Why doesn't God want us to be certain that He's there?" The Bible speaks clearly about God's desire for glory, honor, and praise. Yet many people also complain that God doesn't work hard enough to make Himself known. Can we make sense of this seeming contradiction? This week, Vince and Jo address the questions of whether or not God wants us to know He's there, and what it means for God to desire glory and praise.

Many People Suffer. What's the Big Deal with the Cross?

In our day, there is often confusion about the nature of the cross and the necessity of Christ to suffer death upon it. If God is all-powerful, isn't his suffering just a fiction? Is sin really that serious? Couldn't God forgive mankind simply by a wave of his hand? This week, Vince and Jo answer questions about whether Jesus' death on the cross counts as true suffering in light of his eternal life, and why blood sacrifices were required in the Old Testament.

Why Don't All Paths Lead to Heaven?

As our society becomes increasingly pluralistic, it gets harder to claim that there is just one "right" way to believe. More and more, Christianity is seen as not only naïve but actually hateful for not affirming the truth claims of other religions. This week, Vince and Jo field questions about whether the culture we're raised in determines our beliefs, what we are to make of religions that predate Christianity, and whether Jesus or Mohammed brings salvation.

To Believe or Not to Believe

Is truth knowable? How do you choose whom or what to believe? This week, Drs. Vince and Jo Vitale spend time on an important question from an agnostic: "I have read books on both sides of the spectrum for God's existence...Now, to be honest, I have yet to make up my mind partly because [it] is just a huge subject; but I think that both sides can make good arguments for their case...It is not so much the philosophical points or scientific data that prevents me from believing; it is the Bible itself! How can we explain the passages where we read that Pharaoh's army went right into the sea while the Israelites were going through it? If I were Pharaoh, the sight of seeing the red sea split in half would make me at least stop, and consider the miracle right in front of his eyes, not go in there right after them without any deliberation." If you've ever wondered the same, you're in good company. Join us this week to hear how Vince and Jo respond.
