Todd Chance, "Principle of Murder" | MURDERISH Ep. 064

On August 25, 2013 a body was discovered in a field in Bakersfield California. A suspect emerged, and investigators worked to figure out why this person wanted the victim dead. As it turned out, the killer may have been seen on surveillance footage leaving the crime scene, but was it really the killer? This would be a source of debate in the trial that took place years after the murder. Join me as I examine a case that broke stereotypes and had many people in disbelief after a suspect was identified.

It’s February 8, 2018. A man is lying on his back in the parking lot of Wildwood Park in San Bernardino, California. He’s been shot multiple times. He’s struggling to breathe and has the look of imminent death in his eyes. He would be dead soon. Police caught up with the man’s killer and it seemed, this was just another homicide in a city previously dubbed, the “Murder Capital” of California. But, things are not always what they seem as would be discovered with this case.

"Stranger in my Bedroom," Breakdown w/ Dr. Shiloh | BONUS episode
3982
In a very early episode of MURDERISH, I chronicled my personal story. When I was 18 years old, a man followed me home and came into my bedroom. That episode is titled “A Stranger in my Bedroom.” If you haven’t listened to it yet, I recommend that you listen to that episode first and then come back to listen to this episode.

In this BONUS episode, I speak with Dr. Shiloh, Forensic Psychologist, and Co-Creator/Co-Host of LA Not So Confidential podcast. Dr. Shiloh gave her insight on the perpetrator who took so many risks that night over 20 years ago. Sexual assault is discussed during our conversation, however, we don’t go into any great detail. Please use discretion. Join me as Dr. Shiloh and I rehash the night a stranger followed me home and entered my bedroom.

Henry Glover, "The Cover-Up" | MURDERISH Ep. 059
3404
Hurricane Katrina, which slammed into the Louisiana coast on August 29, 2005, was the most damaging hurricane in US history. The devastating disaster killed approximately 1,200 people, with most of the destruction occurring in and around the city of New Orleans. Looting in the city was rampant during this time, as most stores were abandoned. People were taking food, water, and other supplies ...many out of necessity. Allegations arose of police officers also looting stores during the disaster. The alleged looting by some police officers, however, would take a backseat to more serious crimes involving citizens being shot by police officers in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. This episode covers the death of a man at the hands of those sworn to protect him. Join me as I walk you through the case involving Henry Glover.

Introducing | For Life: The Podcast
526
In today’s episode, you’re going to hear a sneak peek for a new podcast. For Life: The Podcast is a series that dives into true stories of people who were wrongfully convicted. Unfortunately, it’s estimated that thousands of people are wrongfully convicted every year in the US. For a select few, their wrongful conviction is not where their story ends, it’s actually just the beginning. Against the odds, some wrongfully convicted people emerge as warriors for justice, and they do it with grace and a strong sense of purpose.

For Life: The Podcast is from Sony Pictures Television and ABC Television. The Podcast is in collaboration with the new scripted drama series FOR LIFE, produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, and inspired by the life of the show’s host, Isaac Wright Jr. Wright was wrongfully convicted of drug charges in 1991, and sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison. In prison, Wright taught himself the law, and as a paralegal, he was able to help fellow inmates get reduced sentences. He even got some inmates released from their own wrongful convictions. Wright eventually triumphed and was able to get his own conviction overturned. Wright eventually became a lawyer and has continued to seek justice for those in need. For Life: The Podcast explores other true stories of injustice, tests of character, love, faith, and triumphs of spirit. The Podcast debut’s 2.11.20 and is available wherever you listen to podcasts. Search For Life: The Podcast wherever you’re listening now and hit “subscribe.”

Chicken Coop Murders - Serial Killer, Stewart Northcott | MURDERISH Ep. 038
5201
In February of 1928, Stewart Northcott would commit his first known murder. He would go on to become a serial killer, who preyed on adolescent boys. Stewart lived on a chicken ranch in Wineville, CA (now named Mira Loma). The ranch would become a house of horrors for his victims, which included his own nephew. Shockingly, Stewart’s crimes became a family affair, with his mother playing a prominent role in carrying out the brutal slayings that occurred on the chicken ranch. The chicken coop murders have inspired movies and tv shows, and motivated a community to change its name in order to wash away the memories of what happened there. Father Ed Hinds | MURDERISH Ep. 037
3051
This episode of MURDERISH brings us to the East Coast of the United States, to the Garden State of New Jersey. When the battered and cold body of Father Ed Hinds was discovered on the floor of the church rectory, covered in blood, nobody had a clue who could have killed him, or why. The community would quickly learn who brutally murdered the Catholic Priest, but jurors would have to decide whether the murderer snapped in a fit of rage over the Priest’s actions, or if the murder was motivated by the need to cover up a 20-year-old secret. Join me as I walk you through the murder of Father Ed Hinds. The “Smoked” Murders | MURDERISH Ep. 31
2712
The triple homicide, known as the “Halloween Massacre,” occurred in Pasadena, California in 1993. As rare as violent crimes are in Pasadena, the Halloween Massacre was the second triple homicide in the City in less than a three-year time span. On Friday, March 22, 1991, at about 2:30 in the morning, Pasadena police received a call asking them to do a welfare check at a posh home located on the 1300th block of Fairlawn Way. Officers arrived about 18 minutes later to find three deceased teenage girls. The brutal crime scene would haunt the lead detective until his dying day. In this episode of Murderish, I’ll walk you through the tragic murder of three teenagers, a crime for which no motive was ever uncovered. MURDERISH now has a Patreon page. The Wichita Massacre | MURDERISH Ep. 030
4488
Just seven days after a quadruple homicide in Wichita, Kansas, a second would take place. This crime, known as The Wichita Massacre, would become one of the most famous crimes in the history of Kansas, along with those committed by infamous serial killer, Dennis Rader (known as BTK). Between December 7 and December 14, 2000, two brothers, Reginald and Jonathan Carr, went on a robbery, rape and murder spree in Wichita. The Carr brothers inflicted great pain and suffering upon their victims, and their victims’ families. However, from this terrible tragedy, arose a story of tremendous triumph, and, of all things …love. MURDERISH now has a Patreon page. Kelly Ann Tinyes | MURDERISH Ep. 027
2908
13 year old, Kelly Ann Tinyes, walked down the street to her neighbor’s house in Valley Stream, New York.  The young girl was never seen alive again.  When police found her body, they could have never prepared themselves for what they were about to witness.  The trial was filled with outbursts of emotion from the gallery, while the defendant kept his head down most of the time.  A juror who sat on the trial shared insight with me, and also spoke about how the months-long trial affected her.  This brutal murder would pit two families against each other ….for decades. On December 23, 1991, in Corsicana Texas, three young girls would lose their lives in a house fire.  Someone would go on trial for arson and murder, and by the end of it all, four peoples’ lives would be claimed by the fire.  The conclusion of the trial would not mark the end of this tragic story.  Today, many questions surrounding this tragedy still do not have concrete answers.  MURDERISH now has a Patreon page.  If you’d like to support Murderish, and get extra perks in exchange, click here: www.patreon.com/murderish.  Follow MURDERISH on social media: Facebook: Murderish Podcast https://www.facebook.com/groups/540494462961219/          Twitter: @MurderishPod https://twitter.com/MurderishPod Instagram: @MurderishPodcast Send comments and advertising inquiries to: MurderishJami@gmail.com MURDERISH merch now available (t-shirts, mugs & other swag): Murderish | Threadless online merch store https://murderishpodcast.threadless.com/ True Crime Podcast Festival 2019: www.TCPF2019.com. Lyndsey Vaux Murder | MURDERISH Ep. 24
3315
At 5:24 am on Sunday, May 22, 2016, a 9-9-9 operator responded to a call from someone reporting a person who wasn’t breathing.  The caller told the 9-9-9 operator that her daughter’s partner had collapsed.  When emergency medical personnel reached the home, they found Lyndsey Vaux unresponsive and not breathing.  Lyndsey Vaux died not long after the 9-9-9 call.  Investigators could have never been prepared for the information they would learn about the events leading up to Lyndsey’s death.  Lyndsey’s story involves domestic violence and coercive control in their most extreme forms.  Listener discretion is strongly advised. DJ Fickey, Seeking Justice | MURDERISH Ep. 20
3551
A series of three calls came into Walker County 9-1-1 the afternoon of October 3, 2016. The caller said a man shot himself and they needed an ambulance. A woman can be heard wailing and screaming in the background …she’s hysterical. An officer arrives on scene shortly after the third call was finished, and an investigation ensued. However, according to the victim’s family, a bungled investigation, misinformation in official reports, lying witnesses and the fact that all witnesses, and the victim, were drug users …led to an incorrect determination of the manner of death. The victim’s family strongly believes a killer is free and no justice has been served in this case. Join me as I tell the story of Donald Edward Fickey, Jr (“DJ”). MURDERISH now has a Patreon page! Josh Mankiewicz, “Bad Boy” of Dateline | MURDERISH Ep. 019

This is a very special episode featuring none other than True Crime Legend, Josh Mankiewicz of Dateline NBC. My good friend, Kari Martin of White Wine True Crime podcast, and I got together with Manks and recorded this episode. We talked about murder, relationships, Dateline episodes, Scott Peterson, childhood …and Eminem even came up during our convo. At the end of the episode, you’re going to hear a little ditty that Kari and I wrote and performed for Josh. Once this episode airs, any dignity and self-respect Kari and I had will have been flushed down the toilet. But I have to say, it was welllllll worth it. MURDERISH now has a Patreon page! Tristan Jensen & Valaree Schwab | MURDERISH Ep. 018
1682
Tristan Jensen was a young teenager who had his whole life ahead of him. He and his family lived in Redlands California. Unfortunately, he crossed paths with another boy who would end his life much too soon. After police caught up to Tristan’s murderer, JP Remsen, they discovered just how cold, and callous the boy was. Valaree Schwab was a smart and outspoken teenager. According to her family, Valaree was bullied at school for being so outspoken. On what should have been a typical day at school, Valaree and her boyfriend were stalked and followed to a nearby restaurant. The angry mob outside was shouting for Valaree to come outside. She and her boyfriend waited until they thought it was safe, and then exited the restaurant. What happened next would forever change the lives of several teenagers and their families. The Hendricks Murders | MURDERISH 016
3039
In November of 1983, a mother and her three children were found “hacked to death” in their Bloomington, Illinois family home. The prime suspect was the husband and father of the victims, David Hendricks. The prosecution would have you believe that David’s religion and desire to pursue other women were motives for the murders. The defense argued that the murders occurred as part of a robbery committed by an intruder, whose bloody footprint was found inside the home. After two trials, a final verdict was reached …and not everyone agrees that justice was served. MURDERISH now has a Patreon page! Justin Hopper Murder FOLLOW-UP | MURDERISH Ep. 15
2176
In an earlier episode of Murderish, I told the story of Justin Hopper’s murder.  Justin Hopper was a high school student who was gunned down in cold blood by two of his classmates in a Canyon near Redlands California in the 1990s.  In this follow-up episode, I speak with another friend of Justin’s who gives additional perspective on Justin and Ryan Bangs, who was convicted in connection with Justin’s murder (along with co-defendant, Aaron Mercado).  Justin’s friend, who requested to remain anonymous, was in contact with Justin in the days leading up to his murder, and she also attended part of the trial that resulted after Justin was killed.  If you haven’t listened to the Justin Hopper Murder episode, please do so before listening to this follow-up as it may not make much sense otherwise.       MURDERISH now has a Patreon page!  If you’d like to support the Podcast, and get special perks in exchange, click here: www.patreon.com/murderish    Facebook: MURDERISH Podcast https://www.facebook.com/groups/540494462961219/         Twitter: @MurderishPod https://twitter.com/MurderishPodInstagram: MurderishPodcast Send comments and inquiries to: MurderishJami@gmail.com Interested in advertising your company, or podcast, on MURDERISH?  Shoot me an email, or click here for more info: https://www.advertisecast.com/MURDERISH MURDERISH merch now available at two online stores (t-shirts, mugs & other cool stuff): Threadless online store https://murderishpodcast.threadless.com/ TeePublic online store http://tee.pub/lic/-c0zMWCpN-I Podcast promos:  (subscribe, rate & review)! This episode was Edited, Mixed and Mastered by John Bukenas of Audio Editing Solutions www.audioeditingsolutions.com.  Need a great audio editor?  John B. is your guy!Intro/Outro music in this episode created by: Nico Vettese of We Talk of Dreams.  Contact Nico at nico@wetalkofdreams.com or www.wetalkofdreams.com if you’re interested in working with him to create music for your podcast …or any project!Remember, listening to this podcast doesn’t make you a murderer …it just means you’re murder-ish!

CrimeCon Recap | Murderish BONUS EPISODE
3996
In this bonus episode of Murderish, Kari Martin and I recap our trip to Nashville to attend CrimeCon. Kari Martin is the co-host of White Wine True Crime and Pretty Scary podcasts. Our recap begins with a CRAZY flight to Nashville where we did something that may have landed us on the TSA watch list. Kari and I talk about things that went on at CrimeCon and people we spent time with, including none other than Josh Mankiewicz from Dateline NBC! This bonus episode is a light-hearted break from the dark nature of most Murderish episodes. I think you’ll get a good laugh listening to my convo with Kari. Enjoy!MURDERISH now has a Patreon page! Jim Fitzgerald, Catching the Unabomber (Part 2) | Murderish Ep. 013
3125
James R. Fitzgerald (AKA Fitz) is a retired FBI profiler with a specific expertise in Forensic Linguistic Analysis. Fitz’s expertise in Forensic Linguistic Analysis played a significant role in apprehending the infamous serial killer, Ted Kaczynski, who was known as the Unabomber. The Unabomber’s reign of terror lasted over 17 years before he was arrested at his secluded cabin in the woods of Montana in 1996. A miniseries called Manhunt: Unabomber was made and based on Fitz’s hunt for the Unabomber. Fitz has also authored a book titled A Journey to the Center of the Mind, which documents his life as an FBI Profiler and his work on the task force that ultimately caught the Unabomber.Fitz and I talked about everything from some of his most memorable cases, to what drove him to seek a career in law enforcement. We did a deep dive regarding his work on the Unabomber task force, and I learned some very interesting facts about Ted Kaczynski that surprised me. Emily Meehan, Dirty John’s daughter | Murderish Episode 010
4050
In this episode of Murderish, I interview John Meehan’s (AKA Dirty John) oldest daughter, Emily Meehan. For those who are unfamiliar, Dirty John is a wildly popular podcast that covers a crazy, true crime that occurred in Orange County California. Please listen to the Dirty John podcast before listening to this episode of Murderish. Emily was just five years old when her parents divorced.  In true Dirty John fashion, John Meehan left his family and drained their bank account, leaving Tonia Bales (his wife at the time, and Emily’s mother) with only $23 to support herself and their two daughters. In this interview, Emily opens up about her life with, and without, John Meehan. She also gives great insight into how John was as a father. Emily and I talked about the half sister she has as a result of one of John Meehan’s affairs. She also spoke about the medical condition John had, which caused his organs to be ineligible to donate after he died. Emily is a lot like her mom. She’s strong, smart and driven. Emily will soon graduate from Augusta University with a degree in nursing. I’m especially excited about interviewing Emily because she and her sister, Abby, were not emphasized much in the Dirty John podcast or the Dateline episode featuring this story. We haven’t yet heard Emily’s perspective on this story, until now. Please visit Emily’s YouTube channel by searching Em&Dex. MURDERISH now has a Patreon page! Tonia Bales, Dirty John’s First Wife | Murderish 009
4371
In this episode of Murderish, I interview John Meehan’s (AKA Dirty John) first wife, Tonia Bales. You might remember Tonia from the wildly popular Dirty John podcast, where listeners got to hear recorded phone calls between John and Tonia. John’s threats to Tonia during those calls made the hair on my arms stick up. During the interview, Tonia talks about those phone calls and her motivation behind staying on the phone with John even after he threatened her.     MURDERISH now has a Patreon page! In December of 1992, Justin Hopper, was making plans to move and get a fresh start. He was a high school senior at the time when he found himself in a dangerous situation. He was a kind-hearted, caring guy with a sentimental side. He was a football player who maintained good grades in school. Justin shared his plans to escape the lifestyle he was living with his close friend, Suzi. Sadly, Justin had no idea that he only had a few more weeks to live after sharing his plans with Suzi.
