Special: Tesla Cybertruck event and reveal
1731

After months of hype, Tesla has finally unveiled its Cybertruck electric pickup truck today in Los Angeles. The vehicle features up to 500 miles of range, a starting price of just $39,900, and much more.

Listen to our special event episode of the Electrek podcast below, or subscribe in your podcast app of choice here.

Elon Musk first mentioned Tesla's plan to build an electric pickup truck over seven years ago.

Tonight, at its design studio in Los Angeles, Musk took the stage to finally unveil his vision of a super pickup truck with an all-electric powertrain.

He had warned that the design might be too polarizing due to its futuristic Blade Runner-esque look, and no one knew exactly what he meant by that, but now it's clear that he wasn't kidding.

Tesla Cybertruck design and functionality

The Tesla pickup truck, if you can call it that, looks more like it's something driving off of a movie set than something you can drive off a car dealership's lot (not that you can technically do that, either).

Like Musk said, it looks like nothing else:

The lines are extremely simple, like nothing else we have seen delivered to customers in the last 30 years, but also more futuristic than most concept vehicles that never see production.

Instead of a body on a frame, they created a new platform that uses a skeleton structure, which they claim makes the truck extremely solid:

Cybertruck is built with an exterior shell made for ultimate durability and passenger protection. Starting with a nearly impenetrable exoskeleton, every component is designed for superior strength and endurance, from Ultra-Hard 30X Cold-Rolled stainless-steel structural skin to Tesla armor glass.

It is also equipped with Tesla Armor Glass, like the Tesla Semi. Though they had a bit of an issue with the live demo:

It sits six people, and it is equipped with a 6.5 foot bed, which they call the Cybertruck vault.

The top is covered, but it unrolls if you need to fit something higher than the roof of the "vault":

The Tesla Cybertruck also comes standard with an adaptive air suspension, which should help the performance with different loads.

Tesla Cybertruck specs

Three versions of the Tesla Cybertruck are going to be available with different battery packs and drivetrain configurations.

The single motor RWD version will offer 250 miles of range.

A dual motor, all-wheel-drive version will reach 300 miles of range, and a tri-motor version will have 500 miles of range:

Tesla expects the tri-motor version to be able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds and complete the quarter-mile in 10 seconds.

Here are the full specs of each version of the Tesla Cybertruck:

As Musk promised, the functioinality specs are better than a Ford F150, while the performance specs are better than a Porsche 911.

Tesla Cybertruck price and availability

Tesla announced that the Cybertruck will start at $39,900 before incentives in the US, which is a lot less than most people expected.

The two less expensive versions, which are going to start at $39,900 and $49,900, are coming in "late 2021," while the more expensive version with more motors and bigger battery pack is going to be available in "late 2022."

Tesla Cybertruck pickup: What to expect
2804

The Tesla Cybertruck pickup has an official release date now, and we take a look at what to expect on November 21 at the unveiling in this special episode of the Electrek Podcast.

Support our show!

It's likely one of the most anticipated electric vehicles of the year.

Pickup trucks represent a massive segment of vehicles in the US, and it desperately needs to have its average CO2 emissions significantly reduced.

Electric pickup trucks are expected to do that.

Rivian sort of launched the craze with the unveiling of the R1T at the LA Auto Show last year, and since then, several companies, including Ford and GM, two of the biggest pickup truck makers, have announced plans to make electric pickups.

Now a year later, Tesla is going to unveil its own design for an electric pickup truck using its 15 years of experience making electric vehicles, and the EV community couldn't be more excited.

In terms of what to expect, we already know a lot about the targeted specs of the truck.

Tesla’s CEO has previously sought suggestions for features to add to the Tesla truck under development, and he revealed some planned features, like an option for 400 to 500 miles of range, Dual Motor all-wheel-drive powertrain with dynamic suspension, as well as “300,000 lbs of towing capacity.”

Earlier this summer, Musk said that the Tesla Pickup truck will cost less than $50,000 and “be better than a Ford F150.”

The biggest question is the design and size of the vehicle.

Musk said that the Tesla Pickup Truck will have a “really futuristic-like cyberpunk Blade Runner” design.

He later called it "an armored personnel carrier from the future" and said that "people would think it's something out of a movie set."

The mystery of the Tesla pickup truck design is going to be answered on November 21 at the official unveiling event.

We will discuss all that and more in a special episode of the Electrek Podcast today at 1:30 p.m. ET (10:30 a.m. PT) live on YouTube and later on your favorite podcast app.
