This is such a funny podcast hosted by two very funny, high-energy people with serious musical talent. (Fair warning: if you like any of the songs they punch up, maybe skip that episode - sometimes their take will make you sad, tastes vary)

This is as hilarious look at how weird the lyrics to some songs are. I love it because frequently I hadn't ever put much thought into how strange some songs are.

Description

Every week, comedians/best friends Miel Bredouw and Demi Adejuyigbe attempt to fix a popular song despite absolutely no qualifications. PUNCH UP THE JAM is a show cataloging their descent into madness as they review, rewrite, and remix all the hits you love to hate, or just love (until they ruin it for you.)

Episode Date
79 - You Get What You Give (w/ Hayes Davenport)
01:38:23

Come around, we WON'T kick your ass in. Hayes Davenport (@hayesdavenport - Hollywood Handbook podcast) brings the 1998 bucket hat classic "You Get What You Give" by the New Radicals to the stüd. Why did Gregg with three G's threaten children? Is it a DSA negging anthem? Should we bring kicking as a threat back? Correct. It's a kick ass time.

UNPUNCHABLE JAMS: "Your Best American Girl" by Mitski, "I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)" by Jamie XX, and "Doo-Wop (That Thing)" by Lauryn Hill.

78 - Poison (w/ Matt Belknap)
01:33:44

WRONG MOVE, YOU'RE DEAD, as in if you don't listen to this episode with Matt Belknap (@mattbelknap - Never Not Funny podcast, Co-Founder of ASpecialThing Records) about Bell Biv Devoe's "Poison" you will die, eventually, from natural causes, hopefully. You also will if you do listen to it, sorry. Listen we're 78 episodes deep I don't know what to write here anymore.

UNPUNCHABLE JAMS: "Brothers Gonna Work it Out" by Public Enemy, "Can I Take You Out Tonight" by Luther Vandross, and "Oh Baby" by LCD Soundsystem.

77 - Kiss From a Rose (w/ Travis McElroy)
01:32:04

We punched up the TRUE national anthem with Travis McElroy (@travismcelroy - My Brother, My Brother and Me, The Adventure Zone podcasts). Is it drugs? Is it love? Are they the same thing? Seal will never explain his 1994 hit "Kiss From A Rose" and personally??? I respect that.

Video of the punch-up available on Youtube!

Plus, an important announcement from Demi.

UNPUNCHABLE JAMS: "Locomotive Breath" by Jethro Tull, "Don't Give Up" by The Whitest Boy Alive, "Black Rainbow" by St. Vincent, "Tiger Teeth" by Walk the Moon, "Stolen Moments" by Cautious Clay, "Ghosts" by Gary Jules.

ALSO, I FACT-CHECKED MYSELF on the "key changes" we reference throughout the episode and found this incredibly insightful comment from reddit user "willylumplumps"

"It looks like his main device in "Kiss From a Rose" is to blend the keys of G mixolydian (key of C) and Gminor.

So for example, the intro is Gmin, F, G. This has a mysterious sound because the first two chords sort of establish the key as Gmin or Bb while the G major sort of surprises us and snaps us back to key of C.

The verses and choruses are G mixolydian which is really just the key of C starting on the 5 chord. He's starts using the borrowed chord flat 3 (Eb).

One last sneaky thing he does is that he never goes to the tonic until the bridge which gives the bridge a really triumphant quality because our brains and ears haven't heard home until this point. And then he drops a freakin' flat 6 chord on us just because he can"

Welcome to Punch Up the Jam!
00:06:56

Meet the hosts of Punch Up the Jam: Demi Adejuyigbe and Miel Bredouw are comedians, writers, and best friends, with absolutely no qualifications to “fix” popular songs— but that won’t stop them from trying. PUNCH UP THE JAM is a show cataloguing their descent into madness as they review, rewrite, and remix all the hits you love to hate, or just love (until they ruin it for you.)
