A few quotes from this episode:

  • Being a good leader isn't about being the best player.
  • Great team members don't compete against their teammates. They contribute to winning together.
  • Success is fleeting. It's not a final destination.
  • If you want to have a winning team, you have to be a connected team.
  • Many teams that win and then don't win again, it's because they become disconnected.
  • It doesn't matter if you excel but your team loses.
  • Stop chasing everyone opinion of what success should look like for you. Chase your success.
  • You don’t think of mistakes and failures as opportunities when they are happening but God uses them to better us and help us to become who we were created to be.
  • Everybody goes through struggle. It's the struggle that makes us stronger (if we let it).
  • Success is helping others grow.

How a Former College QB Sentenced to Life in Prison Transformed His World | Damon West
01:08:16

His story is one of the most inspiring that you will hear.

The true story of a well-raised kid, a three-year starting quarterback, a young person filled with potential…until a shocking addiction took hold.

Sentenced to sixty-five years in a Texas prison, Damon West once had it all. He came from a great family, in a home full of God, love, support, and opportunities to reach any goal. A natural born leader, an athlete with good looks and charm, he appeared to be the all-American kid pursuing his dreams.

Underneath this facade, however, was an addict in the early stages of disease. After suffering childhood sexual abuse by a babysitter at the age of nine, Damon began putting chemicals into his body to alter the way he felt.

Once he was introduced to methamphetamines, however, he became instantly hooked—and the lives of so many innocent people would forever be changed by the choices he made in order to feed his insatiable meth habit.

After a fateful discussion during his incarceration with a seasoned convict, Damon had a spiritual awakening. He learned that, like a coffee bean changing with the application of heat and pressure, he was capable of changing the environment around him. Armed with a program of recovery, a renewed faith, and a miraculous second chance at life, Damon emerged from over seven years of prison a changed man. His story of redemption continues to inspire audiences today.

DAMON WEST is a motivational speaker and author of The Change Agent: How a Former College QB Sentenced to Life in Prison Transformed His World. Over the past few years, he has been sharing the Coffee Bean lesson with college football teams such as Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, and Texas, and countless schools and businesses. A Positive Moment: 10 Thoughts About Leadership
02:40

A Positive Moment is a short mid-week message from Jon Gordon as part of the Positive University Podcast.

In this message Jon shares 10 Thoughts About Leadership:

--

Whether you are a leader of a business, team, hospital, sports team, classroom, church or home, I hope you'll be encouraged to be a better leader.

1. People follow the leader first and the leader's vision second - It doesn't matter if the leader shares a powerful vision, if the leader is not someone who people will follow the vision will never be realized. As a leader, who you are makes a difference. The most important message you can share is yourself.

2. Trust is the force that connects people to the leader and his/her vision - Without trust there is a huge gap between the leader and the vision. Without trust people will stay off the bus. However if people trust the leader they will hop on the bus with the leader and help move the bus forward towards the vision.

3. Leadership is not just about what you do but what you can inspire, encourage and empower others to do.

4. A leader brings out the best within others by sharing the best within themselves.

5. Just because you're driving the bus doesn't mean you have the right to run people over - Abraham Lincoln said "Most anyone can stand adversity, but to test a man's character give him power." The more power you are granted the more it is your responsibility to serve, develop and empower others. When you help them grow they'll help you grow.

6. “Rules without Relationship Leads to Rebellion” - Andy Stanley said this and it's one of my favorite quotes. As a leader you can have all the rules you want but if you don’t invest in your people and develop a relationship with them they will rebel. This applies amazingly to children as well. It's all about relationships.

7. Lead with optimism, enthusiasm and positive energy, guard against pessimism and weed out negativity.

8. Great Leaders know they don't have all the answers - Rather they build a team of people who either know the answers or will find them.

9. Leaders inspire and teach their people to focus on solutions, not complaints. (The No Complaining Rule)

10 Thoughts About Leadership10. Great leaders know that success is a process not a destination - One of my heroesJohn Wooden, the legendary UCLA basketball coach, never focused on winning. He knew that winning was the by product of great leadership, teamwork, focus, commitment and execution of the fundamentals. As a leader focus on your people and process, not the outcome.

Make sure you are a reflection of what you say you stand for.

Your worth isn't found in external things.

Trust the process. Enjoy the journey.

There is a purpose in your pain.

Every day brings a chance at a new beginning.

It all starts with a choice.

Don't have a BC mindset (blaming and complaining).

Focus on what you CAN control. Let go of everything else.

Focus on ONE change that you can control. One change today leads to another change tomorrow.

  • To be a good coach you must learn to  connect with people.

  • Shout praise, whisper criticism.
  • Don’t just tell people what they should do. Show them how.

  • Your credibility and competency contribute to buy-in. You people have to believe in you to buy-into what you’re saying.
  • If you’re not learning from those you lead, you’re doing it wrong.

Michael Lombardi | Winning Championships and Building Teams
56:51

In this episode of Positive University, Jon Gordon and Michael Lombardi talk about building great teams, creating a culture of success, developing better leaders and an inside look at building dynasties in the NFL.

About Michael Lombardi:
Michael was most recently on the coaching staff for Bill Belichick in the New England Patriots' front office, after thirty years working for the San Francisco 49ers, the Oakland Raiders, and the Cleveland Browns (where he was general manager for two years). He writes for The Ringer and his top-ten sports podcast, GM Street, is on the Bill Simmons's podcast network. He is also the author of the new book, "Gridiron Genius: A Master Class in Winning Championships and Building Dynasties in the NFL.” https://amzn.to/2DxlqzM

A few quotables:

The leader sets the culture.

Creating the right culture is important for consistent success.

You can’t outsource the culture. It must be lead by the leader.

Great leaders unify their team. You can’t be a winning team without being unified.

Make sustainable decisions, not just solution based solutions. Think long term, not just short term.

If you want your organization to grow, the leader must lead and coach the other leaders.

Great leaders are always adjusting, always growing, always trying to get better.

Honesty matters. A leader’s integrity enables trust and a good relationship with their team.

It’s about the team. It’s not about you.

Scout your team from the inside out, not just the outside in. Who they are matters.

A few quoteables from this interview:

  • Some people say "I don’t have time." No, all you have is time. It’s how you prioritize your time that matters.
  • The problem is… we get into WHO is right and WHO is wrong vs WHAT is right and WHAT is wrong.
  • Don’t be so focused on winning on the court that it blinds you from helping those you coach win off the court.
  • The minute you think you’ve won, you’ve lost. - Phil Knight
  • Every day I remind myself I am traveling on a path to BETTER.
  • I ask myself every day: "What did I do today to make myself a better person today than I was yesterday?”
  • I’ve always had this theory that, if you help enough people get what they want, you’ll always get what you want.
  • Information = Knowledge
    Knowledge = Wisdom
    Wisdom = Opportunity

Take nothing for granted but always expect the best.

34:30

In this episode of Positive University, Jon Gordon and Molly Fletcher talk creating clarity to be your best self.

----

A few quotes from this interview:

What do the best do differently to rise to the top and how do they stay there?

Learning how to fail and recover from failure is imperative for long-term success.

Don't fight change. Be willing to evolve. Seek to get better every day.

Negotiation isn't just about dollars and dominating. It's about connection, relationships and authenticity.

You have to get clear on what matters most to you.

You have to define success within the framework of what matters most to you.

After you are clear on what matters most, then you need to have the discipline to execute within the framework of your clarity.

Ask yourself... How do I show up as my best self in all my roles?

Kelli Masters | From Fear Driven to Purpose Driven
41:39

Bestselling author Jon Gordon talks with sports agent Kelli Masters. Kelli shares her journey of going from fear driven to purpose driven (and how you can do the same).

A few quoteables from this interview:

Don’t ever let someone tell you that you are not enough.

Focus on what makes you different because that's what makes you great.

People ask me how I've grown my business, the answer is one relationship at a time.

Under promise and over deliver.

Be honest. Tell people the truth, especially when you don't know the answer.

Social networking isn't just about LinkedIn or Facebook... it's about developing real relationships with others.

You must have a picture of where you are going to help keep you stay anchored during tough times.

Your team doesn't have to all think alike but they must have a shared vision and purpose.

Fear is best overcome through action. You usually have to step out before the courage comes.

Speak life. Encourage others every chance you can.

----

Kelli Masters is widely recognized as one of the most influential women in sports business. She has represented more professional athletes than any woman in the industry, having served as agent/contract adviser to players in every NFL draft since 2006 as well as numerous players in the MLB draft. Marshawn Evans Daniels | Purpose - Believing Bigger - Live Bolder
26:29

In this episode of Positive University we're sharing a special message from bestselling author and reinvention strategist, Marshawn Evans Daniels.

A few quoteable takeaways from Marshawn include:

We are created on purpose, with purpose from a place of purpose for a purpose.

If you don't know your purpose, you're not alone.

You have to FACE IT to FIX IT.

We're taught retirement instead of reinvention.

We're taught to pursue success instead of significance and careers instead of calling.

Don't get sick with the disease, the Disease to Please (other people).

Who you decided to be isn't always who God designed you to be. Believe bigger.

Don't believe the label that's a fable of who you really are. Labels often limit.

Do you have the Purpose Tug? That feeling like there is more? There's a reason (because there is).

Every Life Shift first begins with a Mind Shift.

Your life is not your own. What can you do to serve others?

Believe bigger. Live bolder.

Tony Dungy | Tips for Life, Teamwork and Success
19:25

Tony Dungy is a father of ten, author, retired NFL coach, and National Spokesman for @AllProDad.

In this episode of Positive University, Jon Gordon talks with Tony about life, teamwork and success.

A few quoteables from Tony include:

Life is like a movie. You don't know how it's going to end. What you see right now is just a snapshot.

A moment (good or bad) doesn't have to define you.

A team with a common bond working for a common purpose is hard to beat.

When you're playing for each other vs yourself, you're more likely to win.

Who can we help? <- A good way to approach life.

Look at it like you're helping someone vs just being their boss.

Your job as a leader is to help those you lead to get better.

Often you don't know it at the time but the adversity you face now is training you for a better future tomorrow.

Success to me is doing everything you can do with the skills and the gifts God gives you.
