HOD SELECT: A New Framework for Dating in Our Modern Era with Jon Tyson
57:25
Want to learn how to better steward your singleness well in this season? Our guest today is Jon Tyson, a NY based pastor who is not afraid to talk about some of the harder topics as it comes to dating, sexuality, and more. Jon’s most recent sermon series called the Controversial Jesus has been blowing our minds and touches on topics like the transgender movement, Jesus and Politics, and also Singleness and Sexual Formation… which are 2 that inspired today’s conversation. Jon is originally from Australia and moved to the US 20 years ago with a passion to seek and cultivate renewal in the Western Church. He is currently the pastor of Church of the City New York that launched in 2017 and previously has planted other church communities. On top of being incredibly ambitious, Jon is also an author and wrote fantastic books including “Sacred Roots”, A Creative Minority, and most recently The Burden is Light. Some of our favorite moments from today include: -Singleness is an opportunity to “Leverage your margin for the KINGDOM of God”. This is a time to wholly embrace God’s call on your life and cultivate Holy Ambition as a single. -In all, “what we need is not better dating, we need better people, better christians and those people coming together will build better marriages and better relationships but right now we are using it as a bandaid for our own brokenness.” In this conversation, we answer questions that you sent in and we we dive into some pretty fiery topics including developing “a theology of dating”, what would Jesus do if he did date, as well as our sexual formation and cultural influences. So get out a pen and prepared to have your vision reworked as we learn some incredible wisdom from Pastor Jon Tyson. If you enjoyed today’s episode- let us know! We love to see you repost us on social media. Remember, you are not alone! Lastly, if you like what we are doing, we would love if you would rank us and write a review on here- it helps us immensely to stay afloat. PS. 077: Pushing Past Physical Challenges in Dating with Chris and Emily Norton
47:23
If you’ve listened to this podcast for a while you know that we really are committed to bringing you content that is rich and also diverse, and one topic we have never covered is dating with a disability! So today we are bringing you a beautiful and inspiring conversation around that topic… you are going to just love our guests! Years ago Chris Norton suffered a spinal cord injury while playing football at Luther College. The doctors gave Chris a 3% chance of moving anything below his neck again. Four years later, he defied the odds and walked across stage at his college graduation with his fiancé, Emily Summers. The video went viral twice and garnered 300 million+ views, and caught the eye of the country’s top media outlets (Good Morning, America, TodayShow.com, NBC Nightly News, CBS, USA Today, Sports Illustrated, etc.). Three years later, Chris attempted another incredible feat – this time, perhaps the most important walk of his life - down the aisle with his wife, Emily. As with his Graduation Walk, Chris prepared relentlessly, spending four hours per day in the gym. Chris and Emily joyfully conquered the challenge – and walked seven yards down the aisle after their wedding ceremony. Today Chris Norton is a well-respected motivational speaker and speaks at numerous events across the country. Chris’s message focuses on the fact that we all face challenges, but our circumstances don’t define us – we do. Earlier in 2019, Chris and his amazing wife Emily Norton released a book The Seven Longest Yards on Jwith the foreword written by Tim Tebow; and a feature documentary about his story titled, 7 Yards: The Chris Norton Story, is expected to debut this year in 2020. Chris created the Chris Norton Foundation, which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people with spinal cord and neuromuscular disabilities by providing opportunities that would not otherwise exist. Chris and Emily have adopted five amazing girls, a 20-year-old and a sibling group of four sisters (ages 10, 9, 6, & 3), and have fostered a total of 18 children. They are both deeply committed to providing a safe, loving home for children in need…. I mean friends, they are just such a stellar couple! We really wanted Emily and Chris to come on the podcast because dating can be so inward focused, and in an age of the hookup culture and so much consumeristic mindsets, we just love how selfless Emily and Chris pushed passed physical challenges and are truly living in their mission together. Some themes of today’s conversation: -Dating with a disability -Being more open-minded in dating -Battling and conquering insecurity -Radically changing your mindset PS. Have you tried therapy or been wanting to try it? We recommend if you’ve ever considered it to try out the incredible Christian based therapy through Faithful Counseling. Not only is it easier to access that traditional offline therapy, but it is also more affordable. 073: Friendationships and Walking in Your Worth with Minaa B
58:23
Hey fam and welcome to 2020 and a brand new episode of heart of Dating! We are dubbing 2020 as the year of walking in your worth, so with that being said how can we do that even better as singles? To start off this 2020 season, we are addressing a topic that comes up a ton. Today Kait invited her friend, and licensed social worker, Minaa B onto the podcast to have an honest conversation about friendationships and walking in your worth. Friendationships can happen when one or both parties form feelings for the other person, but the relationship has not been defined as more than a friendship. This can get messy and confusing and cause immense heartache… and both Kait and Minaa discuss candidly how to navigate them and embrace your worthiness. Minaa B. is a writer, author of the book Rivers Are Coming and a licensed social worker. She is passionate about all things mental health and self-care. When Minaa is not working with clients, she is spreading love and light on her mantra-filled Instagram account @minaa_b. We hope and pray that after today’s episode you will take a long and hard look at the relationships you have in your life with the opposite gender, and reflect on if that relationship is clearly defined and bringing you life, or if it is confusing and causing you anxiety or frustration. Some themes of today’s episode: -How to walk in your worth -What is a friendationship? -How to have boundaries in a friendationship -How to date with intention PS. If you’re interested in deeper relationship advice, our host Kait Warman offers 1 on 1 relationship coaching. We understand that every person’s dating history, and personal life history is different… which means that not one set of dating advice or encouragement can apply to us all. 027: The Importance of Values, Vision, & Effort in Life and in Dating with Joel Brown
58:38
What is driving you in your life? What is your vision and purpose? What do you value? How much effort are you putting in? Today Kait interviews the inspiring Joel Brown to navigate these questions. Joel currently lives in Bali and in fact during this interview you could hear the birds chirping outside so you’ll want to get on a plane after for sure! Out in the gorgeous land of Bali Joel runs incredible conferences with his friend Emile Steenveld to help people really dive into figuring out WHAT is limiting them at their CORE. Joel is also huge on contribution, his website addicted2success.com has over 155 Million views worldwide and his podcast, Addicted to Success, has had 3.2M plays and downloads- WOW!!! Joel believes that you can make all the money in the world and you can build the empire but truly our purpose lies in what you can SHARE with others. Joel has also worked alongside some of the GREATS in the field like Tony Robbins, Gabby Bernstein, and so many others. In essence, you will just be blown away with inspiration on today’s episode no matter WHERE you are in your dating life. ….But the reason why we also think this episode is so important is because it can be extremely problematic to not have vision for our lives before entering into dating. We really NEED to have vision for our lives as individuals and bring that into our dating relationships. Some themes of today’s episode: Do you truly know your vision and your purpose? Do you know what you truly VALUE in life? Do you recognize the value of effort that is required? "As a Christian we are meant to live FOR CHRIST, so WHY would you live FOR your partner?” Why is vision so important to have outside of dating? If you can take 3 things away from this Joel encourages you to work on “VALUES. VISION. & EFFORT” in your relationship and in your life. 026: Finding a Partner To Triumph Through the Storms of Life with Gerard & Jeannie Long
59:37
Friends, the reality is that we need to search for a partner who will stand by our side through the storms of life. The first time Kait heard the story of today’s guests she was brought to complete tears. It moved Kait so deeply to see the vast amount of trauma this couple had been through but were able to triumphantly OVERCOME. Today Kait interviews the amazing Gerard and Jeannie Long. Gerard has an extensive banking career background that eventually led him to actually leaving this career to join Alpha USA. Today he is married to the lovely Jeannie and together they live in Malibu. The amazing couple also recently launched the TRIUMPH FOR MARRIAGE COURSE which is an e-learning course for strengthening couples. It’s AMAZING and powerful and we encourage you all to check it out! Gerard and Jeannie have an incredible story of devastation, heartbreak, grief and then restoration and HOPE and love. Today they share about their tragically beautiful story and how they conquered it together with ultimate LOVE and SACRIFICE and SURRENDER through overwhelming healing and STRENGTHENING from God. Friends, the reason why their message is so pivotal is that we believe this lie that relationships are about making us happy. We focus on how the other person can serve our needs and once it gets hard we often see that as a red flag and usually LEAVE for the next thing. The fact of the matter is AND what Jeannie and Gerard’s story shows us is that life is SO much more than just being happy. The storms will come, the unexpected will happen, and at the end of the day you might be left in shambles with your spouse. This is where we have to admit that having a partner to see you through life’s biggest hardship is SO PIVOTAL. Some themes of today’s episode: -Relationships are more about making us HOLY than they are about making us happy. -Character and a person of God is of much greater value than attraction. -There WILL be storms in life. How can we look for a partner to conquer the times of trauma and pain together? -How can we love another person through their seasons of brokenness and darkness? -The pivotal importance of SACRIFICIAL love in relationships. We hope you will listen to todays episode with an open heart. The reality is LIFE will probably get ugly, and painful and hard and sometimes tragic…. so who is it you want standing by your side when that happens? FRIENDS also, we are SO excited to announce the launch of our Dating COURSE: The Date Great Course. Just for Heart of Dating listeners you can be on our list to be the first to get access to this course! Just go to heartofdating.com/dategreat to reserve your spot!

51:24
The Hookup Culture affects us whether we want to admit it or not. Earlier this year Kait watched a documentary on Netflix called LIBERATED: the New Sexual Revolution. She had no idea what she was getting in for, but on top of being highly unaware of just how BAD our hookup culture was, she was also heartbroken by how bad it really is… WHAT IS GOING ON in our modern society of hookup culture land?!?! How is it affecting us as Christians? So today, we are talking to Benji Nolot, who directed the documentary LIBERATED, as well as the film Nefarious, and on top of that he is also the founder and CEO of Exodus CRY. Over the past decade Benji has campaigned aggressively for the abolition of sex trafficking. His deep drive comes from a place that he believes everyone should be FREE. Benji is rich with wisdom friends and has seen a TON, he really has. Some themes of today’s episode: -The hookup culture :how in the world we get here? -The narratives surrounding men and women. -How does it affect us as Christians? -How can we press back against this? Ultimately we CANNOT be naive to the fact that we ARE affected by the hookup culture. This is a real thing and it DOES impact us… so we hope you enjoy this deep dive convo with Benji. 022: What is Masculinity, Really? with Johan Khalilian, Kris Wolfe, and Ryan Gunnarson
44:11
Part 2 of our conversation with 3 incredible men. If you missed our Part 1 of this conversation, you’re going to want to go back and listen to it. We dove into what it is like being a man in the culture of the Me, Too movement. How can we embrace women? How can we do a better job of listening and acknowledging the pain of sexual assault? This week, we are SO incredibly excited to dive into another topic, the prevalent issue of masculinity in our culture. What does it REALLY mean to be a man? Can men be vulnerable? What masks are men sometimes living in? If we could better tackle these questions and seek to be the change in this area we can have SUCH richer and healthier relationships in our lives. The 3 guys this week are amazing guy friends who we honor and respect so much. They are not afraid to get vulnerable, cry, admit that the like pink and pumpkin spice lattes, and have an immense amount of respect and honor towards women. Johan Khallilan is an incredibly vulnerable and compelling motivational speaker. Kris Wolfe is an amazing author and founder of Good Guy swag. And Ryan Gunnarson is an actor and motivator with a heart for treating women well. Here are some stats on masculinity: -88% of all homicides are committed by men. -Men in the US are 6 times more likely to commit suicide then someone else -All mass shooters since 1982 other than 2 have been male and white -For boys SUICIDE is the most leading cause of death -Between ages 20-24 there is 7x more likely chance for suicide in young men than young women -Men in their 50s and 60s are reported of having little to NO close relationships Friends, would you do us a favor and share this message with a friend to keep this conversation going? 021: Men and the Me, Too Movement with Johan Khalilian, Kris Wolfe, and Ryan Gunnarson
1:05:36
Friends we just need to let out a sigh… this episode today means so much to our team here at Heart of Dating. It has been about a year since everything was released regarding the allegations against Harvey Weinstein that led to the start of the Me, Too Movement. We could not think of a better time than now to dive into what we think about this as Christians, especially from the male perspective. We have anticipated releasing this episode for a while and think you will love the realness and richness of the conversation.. NOW more than ever. So today Kait brought on 3 of her guy friends who she admires in SO many ways. Each of them have such beautiful hearts, and truly grasped what it means to love and respect women wholeheartedly, while also learning how to wrestle with their own personal identities as men. So let's introduce our guests! Today we have Johan Khalilian. He uses his life story to help people of all ages believe in the power of their dreams and the impact their life can make in the world around them. He is incredibly REAL and shameless about being vulnerable and we love it. Then we have Kris Wolfe. Kris is a CLASSIC good guy, because he inspires other men to be their BEST selves. He says "A nice guy is a doormat, but a good guy leaves a monument.” He has written some amazing books including Black Tie, and 10 ways to win a girls heart, and also runs an online ministry called Good Guy Swag. Last but not least Ryan Gunnarson. Ryan is an actor and motivator. He and his wife Aquella have been on the podcast before sharing their story earlier this year, and together they co-created a platform on IG @thatonemarriedcouple to encourage laughter and growth in relationships. We love Ryan’s heart and were super pumped he wanted to come back on. Some overall themes today: -There is HOPE… but a lot of work to do.This movement has been a catalyst to start change for the future. -Do men truly understand the gravity of the problem? -How can we embrace and love those who have been affected? -How can men truly be an active part of the change? -How is the church addressing this issue? -How can we champion the people who have been victimized... are we even followers of Christ if we don’t? -Have we turned into a culture a complacency within the church? -Is okay to just be known as a "good guy" but not say anything? -How can we empower men to step out and say something? This conversation, more than ever needs to be had RIGHT NOW. We know we don’t alway like to have uncomfortable conversations, but itchy ares necessary. Do us a favor and share this message with a friend to keep this conversation going. Also friends keep up with us and join our family on Instagram by following us at @heartofdating. 018: Dating in Community with Jonathan JP Pokluda
42:50
The ultimate Christian dating question: How in the world do we date healthily in our communities? And no, we are not referring to anything strangely related to the years of, “I Kissed Dating Goodbye”. But rather, how do we today actually date in our church communities respectfully and lovingly? It’s complex, we know. Today we sit down with Jonathan “JP” Pokluda, the Campus Pastor of Watermark Community Church and leader of The Porch, an influential Young Adult gathering. Their messages are highly influential in the Young Adults and singles community. JP has a distinct passion is to share the Gospel with anyone who will listen and most recently, he has seen this passion come out through writing as he's RELEASED a new book called Welcome to Adulting. We LOVE that title! The book targets Millennials and those passionate about ministering to them. It even has a chapter on dating so CHECK IT OUT y’all. Today we get into talking about the ever so challenging topic of DATING in community. It can be so tough to date in the church, it honestly one of the hardest things to navigate. We want to date, but we also don’t want to leave things overly uncomfortable or unsettled if it doesn’t work out. We want to be respectful, and gentle and loving but also truthful… which begs the question, how do we break up with someone lovingly? Also what if you want to date someone your FRIEND DATED? How do we navigate all the different dynamics you guys? We couldn’t think of anyone better to talk about this than JP and we hope you are blessed by this conversation as much as we were! Don’t forget to come on over to our Instagram @heartofdating for all the dating insight and wisdom as well as updates about all of our shows. We’d love to connect with you!

Jamie Ivey is an author, speaker and fellow podcaster as the host of the incredibly popular podcast, The Happy Hour. Jamie lives in Austin, TX where she is the proud mama to four kids and the wife to Aaron who is a worship pastor at Austin Stone Community Church. Jamie's debut book "If You Only Knew: My Unlikely, Unavoidable Story of Becoming Free," released in January 2018 and was a huge reason we wanted to have her on to talk about this subject today. Jamie talks about how God transformed her heart and vision for her past through deep healing and an awakening to her worth and value. Jamie loves to encourage people to passionately follow Jesus through any stage of life… she is just the greatest! Today Kait and Jamie dive into how to be vulnerable, and the importance of seeing someone through the lens of grace in relationship, especially when handling their past. This episode is applicable to basically everyone because we ALL have a past of some nature, so let’s figure out how to approach it with more acceptance and love, shall we? 013: A New Framework for Dating in Our Modern Era with Jon Tyson
54:35
PS. Today's Episode is Sponsored by WINC! MINISODE: Turning Friendship into Relationship with Ryan & Aqueela
31:16
Have you ever wondered HOW you should go about asking your good friend on a date? How do you prepare for if they turn you down? In today’s MINISODE Kait sits down with a beautiful COUPLE friend of hers, Ryan and Aqueela Gunnarson. They have been married for 10 months and they love bringing people together, swear by the essential value of faith led community, and encourage laughter and growth in relationships. Their story highlights what it looks like to be friends with someone first and then decide to date. This talk is encouraging to all of us who have hesitations about dating someone who is your friend first. One of our favorite points in the entire interview was when Ryan said, “If she said no and turned me down I would be just as content and just as peace filled.” This is truly hard to do: to put your heart out there not knowing if the other person will say yes or no. BUT knowing to your core that even if they turn you down, God is a good God and it does not mean that YOU are any less worthy. If we knew that a bit more, we could honestly start being more confident in asking out friends… what do you think? We hope you are encouraged by this fun and lively conversation with our friends Aquella & Ryan. You can catch up with the lovely couple over on instagram at instagram.com/thatonemarriedcouple. If you like this podcast, we would LOVE if you subscribed, ranked, and WROTE A REVIEW. We want to take this relationship to the next level!
