Quotes:

“I feel like we reserve being a role model just for our children. So how can you be the best version of you and inspire others by how you act and behave? Not just for children but for our loved ones around us.” (12:40)

“If we can fix it before its broken, and we can nurture young women in their journey, that's really for me where the gem lies. Because that is setting someone else up for long-term health.” (15:56)

“I think that if we were taught about our menstrual cycles and how we can use them to our advantage and how in fact it's not bad, in fact, it's wonderful - if you work it all out you can totally play that to your advantage. I think it would be a very different conversation” (23:37)

“We need the information. We need to be educated, we need to be able to make the choices and we need it to be okay. And if it's not okay then we ask more questions, and we get the clarity that we need to make it okay.” (31:18)

Quotes:

“That kind of is why we created The Pillar Life. Because I need rituals. I need reminders. I need little ways, little touchpoints, in a day, to prevent me from going unconscious.” (12:00)

“You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to do all of this perfectly, let’s just keep leaning into what feels good. Here’s the truth, we tend to minimize the simplicity of happiness and what feels good. And maybe that's the most powerful North Star that we have.” (16:01)

“You actually can create empires and magnetize great love and have a beautiful, rich, abundant, happy and successful life, a life that you love, by doing less and being more.” (26:11)

“The temptation is everywhere to scroll through someone else's Instagram account, or turn on cable news and listen to what is going on in that razzmatazz. And the next thing you know, everybody else’s agenda, emotions, concerns, are now ruling your vibrational stance. You know, it is infesting your own environment.” (38:18)

Dr. Pedram Shojai saw this lack of knowledge in the filed and said enough is enough. Since then, he has written multiple books, produced many films and works as an advocate for anybody who needs a change in the operating system and wants to think more clearly about how they view health on a day to day basis.

How do you reset and take care of yourself? Let us know in the comments on the episode page!

Quotes:

“I’m wanting to eradicate illness, and all I’m paid for, is frankly, to be honest, there are no incentives to even keeping people well because the money is all in treating sick people, right?” (6:29)

“Oh my God who the hell wants to be normal!? Normal gets sick, normal has chronic disease, normal is being told what to wear by the Kardashians. Normal is not normal, right? Normal has become zombie automaton slave in this like world that we live in. So if you are trying to be normal you might as well check yourself in and get a hospital bed” (19:57)

“The answer isn’t probiotics, it’s to live probiotically. Right, and its so hard to get through our thick skulls because we have been so trained to be like okay, what's the pill?” (27:16)

“Cancer is cancer and it sucks. But then you start looking at the psychology of the person who says that, and you start looking at the toxicity levels in the microbiome, and then just the psyche that starts to develop around somebody who goes toxic, stays toxic, and instead of trying to heal themselves sort of leans into it.” (36:27)

043: Why Relationships Impact Our Hormones w/ Razi Berry
42:02

What we're talking about it this episode!

  • Recognizing the connection between healing and self-love
  • Why our physiology and our consciousness are inseparable
  • How disassociating from nature could be causing disease
  • Listening to your body and tuning into your intuition
  • What you can do to connect the dots between your food and intuition

Episode Summary:

Like many of us who have become passionate about our health and wellness, Razi Berry has overcome some great illness in her life, and because of that journey has been inspired to create a powerful movement to help women get to the root cause of their health concerns. Specifically, Razi uses her unique perspective to focus in on relationships and how they are impacting the ways in which your hormones and cells communicate.

With an impressive resume to back her up, Razi’s passion lies around getting to the root cause of everything and anything when it comes to your health and wellness. By focusing on your relationship to yourself, other people and the world around you, you can find better ways to connect to who you truly are.

In addition to finding your self-worth and listening to your body, Razi believes in the ultimate healing power of being connected to nature. When you spend time immersed in the natural world, it is processed in every cell in your body and sends signals throughout your brain and heart to coordinate health. This can increase your body's natural intuition and ability to heal.

Through connecting to the earth, you are reconnecting the neural pathways to become more aware in your environment, and your own body. Our relationships and emotions play such a big role in our health and wellbeing. It is important to cue into your intuition and listen to your gut instincts to find true self-understanding. How do you feel about Razi’s approach to relationships and hormone connection? Let us know your thoughts on the episode page

Quotes:

“Your body is constantly giving you these messages of how to love her and how to take care of her. And when we're in our head all the time, we aren't listening to these body’s signals.” (11:17)

“This is all just like a beautiful symphony of energy fields. But then it has a real impact on the physical and mechanical properties inside of our cells and our organs.” (20:03)

“The body is just not going to give up on you. The body is going to continue to try, your body loves you, shes designed to take care of you and she's not going to stop laying down that inflammation, she's not going to stop calling in those troops until it's just, done.” (23:28)

“One of the most important things to do is really start paying attention to your sense of smell, start there. Get rid of anything in your environment that masks that.” (32:36)

“When you eat and move through life in a way that honors this interoceptive and intuitive ability, its strengthens those neural pathways.” (35:26)

Episode Summary:

If you are feeling confused around what is happening to you hormones now that you've entered your 40’s, you are not alone. This can be a confusing time for many women who are dealing with perimenopause, but Lara Briden is here to calm some of your worries.

Lara is a fellow hormone warrior and bestselling author of The Period Repair Manual. She is passionate about women's health, alternatives to hormonal birth control, and helping women navigate perimenopause and menopause with grace.

It is time to get rid of the stigma surrounding menopause and learn what is going on inside of your body. By understanding what is going on inside your body plus setting boundaries around sleep, putting aside time for yourself and time for exercise, you can easily manage this transition with ease.

Have you experienced hormonal changes in your forties? How have you adapted to them? Let us know in the comments on the episode page

Quotes:

“That's what the pill does to women. It creates a kind of chemical menopause and then comes in with hormone replacement that forces a bleed… it's such a substandard type of hormone replacement.” (20:02)

“I will be sitting there looking at someone in the grips of those symptoms, especially if it's mood or sleep symptoms, women can't really tolerate them for very long. And honestly, all they get from their doctors is antidepressants or sleep meds. There is very little being offered to them and they are just being told, ‘well it's just that time of life’, but I don’t accept that.” (22:35)

“One thing for women to understand is this is temporary. You are not going to always be like this, even if you are getting bad symptoms it doesn't mean this is your life now, it just means you have to get through this transition” (23:07)

“There is a stigma that menopause is about being old for women which is just terrible for women because of the way society is, I would say the way the patriarchy is, does not value older women. But think about how many amazing, fantastic dynamic women that are out there in their 50’s and beyond, its not something to be afraid of.” (37:39)

  • What you can do to make your body inhospitable to cancer
  • Overcoming the challenges that come with radically changing your life
  • The value of finding a doctor who supports you in your healing
  • Practical steps you can take to reduce the stress in your life

Episode Summary:

A cancer diagnosis is full of uncertainty and changes your life forever. When it comes to making decisions about your treatment, it's important to have all the information and make your decisions from a position of knowledge, not fear. Chris Wark survived cancer by radically changing his lifestyle and shares his incredible story with us.

Chris’ diagnosis of colon cancer at age 26 sent him on a journey of examining his life and habits. He immediately switched to an organic raw food diet, eliminated toxicity, and changed his relationship towards stress.

His recent hit book, Chris Beat Cancer, is helping many cancer patients learn how to navigate treatment and make the best decisions to support their body in healing. He now continues to educate cancer patients on the risks and benefits of different treatments so that they can enter their treatment equipped with the information they need.

The benefits of eating right and living well so that you can gain control of your health cannot be understated. We have seen time and time again how stress is the root cause of so many health problems. Chris shares his advice of focusing on the mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of your life in order to take charge of your wellbeing.

Have you or someone you know used alternative therapies to treat cancer? Tell me about it in the comments on the episode page!

Quotes:

“It’s really important that patients make a decision that is rooted in facts and faith and not in fear.”  [18:33]

“If you have cancer, you should go ahead and assume that the way you’re living is killing you. Not to blame or shame or anything like that, but to open your eyes so you realize that your choices matter, that you have the power to change, that you have the power to affect your future, that today’s decisions affect tomorrow’s health, and that cancer is largely a manmade disease.” [23:40]

“We should all work with doctors. They’re a part of your team, but you’re in the driver’s seat. If you’re a passenger, if you’re hogtied in the back, that’s not a healthy relationship.” [46:51]

“Unless you deal with the root cause of your stress, whatever it is, and it may be multiple things, then you are going to be stuck in a pattern of self-medicating and that leads to disease.” [57:39]

  • Setting stronger boundaries and knowing when to ask for help

Episode Summary:

Learning how to master the balance of self-care is something that so many of us crave, and today I am joined by a woman who has done just that, Brianne Hovey. Brianne believes that our belief system, and receiving merit based on what you do for others, has skewed our minds and bodies into self-care sabotage. She is on a mission to help you change your beliefs and therefore change your goals and your impact on the world around you.

By rewriting your belief system you can begin to take care of yourself and therefore take care of the world. Today we are dismissing myths about self-care, stressing the importance of how you talk to yourself, and how to listen to what your mind, body, and heart needs to be happy.

It is okay to put yourself first and express love for yourself. Daily gratitude practices, learning how to delegate and holding 100% accountability for yourself are all ways in which you can begin to take better care of yourself. We have the answers to what our bodies and minds need to flourish inside of each and every one of us, and it's time to start listening.

How do you practice self-care and self-love? Let us know your favorite way to treat yourself in the comments on the episode page!

Quotes:

“And in that moment it was like this light bulb clicked on for me that I have to wake up and not feel like I have to be everything to everyone. And that I put everybody before me, which means I put everybody before my own self-care.” (10:45)

“What my life mission has become is how could I take care of myself every single day, how can I love myself so much so that I teach other people how to love themselves that way as well, because it is a mirror.” (12:18)

“It's about looking at new truths. The real reframe I think is looking at what do you want to believe and realizing you have the power to choose that belief.” (19:59)

“Such a huge part of your success in self-care is listening to your feelings, how are you feeling, and then setting stronger boundaries to support you and upleveling your own self-care.” (30:47)

“I finally realized that it's okay to take care of myself, it's okay to go within, and now my intuition can lead the way instead of me being lead by where life would take you if you aren’t in charge.” (38:17)

“The big thing that I started picking up on with my doctors is, if I didn't have something in my lab work for them to research further, something that was amiss or awry, then I wasn’t going to get any help from mainstream doctors.” (16:24)

“I know things now about health and managing my own health and lab work and protocols that I never dreamed in a million years that I would even care about, you know. But I had to figure out how to save myself.” (21:15)

“We’ve got to come together as women and find ways of having our voices respected and heard and moving the needle and supporting each other. The hardest part of this is feeling like you are doing it alone. And you don’t have to do it alone, there is a sisterhood that will support you in reclaiming your life and we're gonna do that together.” (42:58)

Quotes:

“As a functional medicine expert who specializes in hormone health, I am here to tell you that you can reclaim your sexy by incorporating some simple lifestyle changes with the aid of aromatherapy, and you can have fun doing it.” (2:16)

“By accessing the limbic brain through smell, what I love about essential oils is they have a profound effect on our stress and our hormones. As you know… essential oils have a way of literally deregulating your cortisol and ensuring that it gets back to balance.” (9:01)

“Regardless of your stress quotient, our emotional situation can often cause inhibitions when it comes to intimacy. So with or without you dealing with stress, emotions are still at play. Fear associated with how we look, past experiences, ability or a number of other factors can prevent our minds and therefore our bodies from getting into the mood, while many emotional factors can be elevated with essential oils” (16:32)

“While you're at it, schedule that self-care, schedule these lifestyle recommendations that I'm giving you today, schedule loving yourself. By supporting yourself with all of these wonderful habits like great sleep, self-care, eating well, using your oils, going to a yoga class, taking a hike in nature, all of these things are just ways to love yourself and setting the tone for living that best life.” (24:46)

036: Reboot Your Gut And Regain Your Health with Dr. Vincent Pedre
41:41

What we're talking about it this episode!

  • The importance of diet, nutrition and your gut health
  • How you can create immediate health results by fixing your gut
  • Why artificial sweeteners could be a serious risk on your whole body health
  • Ways that your gut health can impact your anxiety
  • The connection between gut health and how your hormones function
  • Nurturing the habit of focusing on starting with gratitude

Episode Summary:

You are in for a treat today, as I am joined by Dr. Vincent Pedre, my #1 go to gut health doctor in the world! Dr. Pedre created his Healthy Gut care program to help people create immediate health results by fixing their gut health. After suffering from digestive troubles as a child, Dr. Pedre broke free of standard medical treatment to help people understand the evolution of gut disease in our society, which really needs attention.

Happy Gut was born out of a huge need for people to understand their gut symptoms and how to heal them without harsh medications. Your gut health is the foundation for the rest of your body, so it is important to take care of your gut first. Gut health can be related to mental clarity, menstrual issues, allergies, and so much more.

By laying the groundwork around all the disruptions that could happen to your microbiome, you can better understand your ‘gut galaxy’. Dr. Pedre is sharing his 3-day gut reset program, how to approach eating, and why you should focus on finding a happy medium.

Has your gut impacted your health? Let us know your thoughts on Dr. Pedre’s tips for achieving total gut health in the comments on the episode page!

Quotes:

“And that’s what finally got me. I was always thinking, even though I was being a western trained doctor, that there was more out there, that there was a greater truth that I was seeking that I wasn’t being taught. And it wasn’t until I ran into functional medicine  that I found the answer to that truth.” (10:19)

“When you feel bloated, you are miserable. Your day is ruined if you feel like you are three months pregnant after eating. So this is a big big problem and unfortunately, especially in the US, because of the way our diet has been adulterated by pesticides and partially by genetically modified crop, and all the preservatives and additives that are put into our food has really messed with the gut flora.” (17:39)

“A lot of times people had chronic gut issues or just chronic health challenges. It’s very easy to let that become the center of your focus. And that can really bring you down. And I find the best way out of there is to start finding the little things, even if it’s the smallest thing that brings you happiness and gratitude and start to express those. And little by little as you do that its gonna grow and grow. So increasing positivity and decreasing stress hormones through gratitude is very important part of healing gut health and healing the body.” (25:08)

“That’s who I wrote my book for. For all those people out there who have been suffering in silence, whose lives have been affected, who aren’t even going out and being social because they don’t know what their gut is going to do. And then to be able to follow my plan and fix their gut and come to a new happy medium where they have their lives back.” (29:49)

What was your biggest takeaway from this episode? Let me know in the comments on the episode page!

Quotes:

“I constantly ask my clients and my friends and the women who come to me, ‘Do you feel like you are on this emotional roller coaster?’ And I would say that pretty much 99% of women say that they do. Especially when they don't understand these phases of their cycle and the fact that everything changes on a week to week basis.” (10:59)

“What you are going to do is you’re going to start paying attention to the symptoms of your fertility. Meaning you’re going to start paying attention to those cervical fluid changes, you’re going to start to pay attention to the times you feel moody or you feel tired or you feel anxious or you feel very energetic. And once you can start to determine a pattern in this app, or you can even use a notebook or your calendar, whatever you want. That way you can really start to schedule things around your life.” (28:12)

“One of the main problems I see is that we are in such a state of chronic stress or in such alarm mode that our sex hormones are being impacted so severely that we are either losing our periods or were having very irregular ovulation and thus irregular periods, or were having a situation where we just can’t get pregnant… a lot of the time that's because our bodies are in such a state that they feel fear, they feel scared, and so it's our goal, i think it's our sacred duty actually, to really focus on how we can mitigate the effects of our stress.” (33:56)

  • How to support your liver functions on a day to day basis
  • The importance of fiber diversity and butyrate: the breakout resistant starch
  • How to stabilize your blood sugar levels
  • Foods that Dr. C recommends to his patients

Episode Summary:

Most of us are aware that our experience in life is conditional on how we feel and how well our bodies function and that food play a big role in that. However, it’s more than just good food vs bad food. Dr. Alan Christianson joins us to explain how your body is burning the fuel you give it so that you can become your most optimal functioning self through the food you eat.

Dr. Christianson, or ‘Dr. C’ for short, has cracked the code on how to fix your metabolism and is here today to help share his knowledge on how to heal from the inside out. He is a New York Times best-selling author and naturopathic physician, inspired to get into medicine after his own health struggles with cerebral palsy and obesity. Dr. C helps his clients understand what is happening inside the body and regain their lives back by understanding protein, fuel, and nutrients.

We are diving into how to get your body into fat burning mode, why carbs might not actually be the devil, and how some surprising resistant starches can help your body function at a higher metabolic rate. Do you follow Dr. C’s advice on amino acids and maintaining fiber? Let us know your thoughts about his metabolism boosters in the comments on the show notes page!

Quotes:

“Your experience in life is so so conditional on just how you feel and how your body is functioning and how you feel about how you look, you know these are big things. And improving that can happen just by information that's applied well, and often times not from things that people are receiving from the conventional world.” (6:20)

“There are so many situations in which keeping your blood sugar steady is the key to good weight and good brain health and longevity and disease prevention, and the more it goes up and down the sicker we become. And even autoimmunity or adrenal changes, they are all things that can be worsened by erratic blood sugar.” (19:05)

“You are talking about detox, you gotta also be taking appropriate steps to detox during that whole weight loss cycle so that your body is not retoxifying or getting these toxic things more concentrated or in worse places, or just making it all not work.” (31:30)

“People often think about nutrients as doing something good, the more we have the better. And nutrients I think more like a key to a car. You know if the key is not there the car doesn't go, but you don’t make a car into a race car by pouring 50 keys into the driver's seat, you know. If you’ve got the key your good.” (32:49)

How do essential oils factor into your self-care and healthcare routines? Let me know in the comments on the episode page!

Quotes:

“Stress was always a factor for my hormone issues, and I can admit that. I just didn't have the right tools at the time, when I was younger, to support me. Until I found oils, and they literally changed everything for me.” (5:50)

“By negatively labeling our hormones as the bad guy, we automatically dismiss our role in the ways that our body functions. It's so easy to place blame on our hormones but we can't act like we have no control over our bodies. Hormones are simply chemical messengers, and they are acting in accordance to our behaviors and our environment.” (9:08)

“When I began to see the essential oil and stress connection, I was just so excited at this beautiful solution that works instantaneously. So essential oils are the golden ticket to supporting this transformation in your life as they can bridge the gap from imbalance to balance while you work at recharging your systems by taking care of your overall health first and foremost. (15:45)

“As you are listening to the benefits of all these oils, you can tell they have all been proven for reducing stress levels in the body, and can be used for many other hormone-related concerns. But again they don't work unless they are in conjunction with other healthcare and wonderful self-care habits. And, most specifically, if you are not using them consistently enough.” (24:18)

How did this episode impact you on your wellness journey? Does the ketotarian diet lineup to your way of thinking about food? Let me know what you are loving about this podcast in the comments on the episode page!

Quotes:

“I heard of this thing called functional medicine through [him], and I thought you know that sounds amazing. It's like marrying the best of western medicine which is labs and being evidence-based and the best of alternative health, which is actually getting somebody healthy and not just covering the symptoms up with medications. This really cool fusion of both worlds.” (7:56)

“I really spent my last couple years clinically and my writing as well to really come up with a solution for a sustainable, real foods way to do the ketogenic diet and that's when I created ketotarian which is a plant-based ketogenic approach to get all the cool benefits of a ketogenic diet but also have a great kind of alchemy with the plant-based diet as well.” (21:35)

“That's why I created the book, is to avoid those pitfalls of the ketogenic diet and i think that a lot of times people kind of throw the baby out with the bath water so to speak. And they try the ketogenic diet and they don't feel good and then they give up. And like with anything you just have to tweak it and personalize it and I’ve seen over the years what works and what doesn't and what most people kind fall prey to unintentionally so I try to boil it down in the bok.” (24:12)

“You can get your macronutrients perfect, you can eat the best foods under the sun, but if you're not really valuing who you are, how far are you really going to get? The foundation has to be self-worth and really loving your body enough to nourish it with good things.” (38:06)

  • Daily lifestyle changes you can make to lower the inflammation in your body

Episode Summary:

Did you know that approximately 1 in 3 people in the United States suffers from some form of chronic pain? Chronic pain impacts more people in this country than heart disease, cancer, and diabetes combined. Dr. Joe Tatta shares today some simple strategies for how we can take control and live pain-free.

Stop letting your pain control you, the time to get back to living life without struggle is now.

Have you or do you currently deal with some form of chronic pain? What do you do to manage it? Let me know in the comments on the episode page!

Quotes:

“Chronic pain is really less about the body and more about what's happening in the brain and nervous system. That doesn't mean we ignore what's going on in the body, because there are aspects of our physical body that are important, but chronic pain really needs to be treated by what's called a biopsychosocial perspective, and that's a fancy word but it means we have to look at whats happening in the body, but also what is happening in someone's brain and nervous system as well as the complete environment in which they live.” (6:49)

“Often times, when we look at people with chronic pain the three more common kinda sixty-foot variables are one, their nutrition, two, their stress level, and then three, their sedentary behaviour, so that's kind of like the sixty thousand foot view of chronic pain. But if you can start to dial in on the nutrition, sedentary behavior, and someone's stress, then you are probably going to be about 75% of the way there.” ” (8:33)

“Chronic pain is the largest lifestyle disease. When we say lifestyle disease people think of ‘oh heart disease or diabetes, or obesity.’ But chronic pain affects more people than heart disease, cancer and diabetes combined.” (9:01)

“Healing the gut is a big factor. Where people don’t make the connection is, ‘How can my gut health connect to my joint health’” (17:28)

030: Heal Your Hunger: How to End Emotional Eating Now with Tricia Nelson
35:15

What we're talking about it this episode!

  • Understanding the connections between your emotions and your food cravings
  • How to identify signs of emotional eating
  • Using the PEP Test to identify 3 primary emotions linked to overeating
  • The difference between emotional hunger vs physical hunger
  • Tricia’s tips on how to end your emotional eating for good

Episode Summary:

Today, my friend Tricia Nelson and I are tackling the huge topic of emotional overeating and how to heal your hunger. After struggling with her own food addiction, and losing over 50 pounds, Tricia has dedicated herself to help those who are struggling with their weight, and today she’s going to share her wisdom with us.

I get email requests to cover this topic all the time, and Tricia is the perfect person to help walk us through it. She is the founder of Heal Your Hunger, is an internationally acclaimed author, motivational speaker, and emotional eating expert, and has helped hundreds of clients overcome various food-related addictions.

As Tricia explains, getting control over your weight and what you are eating can be an incredibly powerful thing, but your freedom is contingent on how you live your life. She is an advocate for living life one day at a time and treating the person behind the disease, not just the symptom. It’s time to stop feeding your exhaustion, and start asking yourself what you’re doing to serve yourself as you work to regain your health.

Tricia gives us a breakdown of the primary emotions and triggers that prompt eating binges, how to structure your meals to help you overcome your overeating and how being a people pleaser may be sending you into an emotional eating spiral. If you have been looking for a reason to take that first step and change your life for the better, listen in as we discuss ways in which you can end your emotional eating for good.

Have you struggled with emotional eating? What are some of your triggers? If you’ve overcome it, what helped you make the transformation? Let me know in the comments on the episode page!

Quotes:

“I tried many things, I tried diets and pills and potions and lotions and exercise programs and therapy and twelve-step programs and self-help books, you name it I tried it. But nothing I did worked until I finally came to see and was shown that my problem really is so much deeper than food” (3:04)

“We’ve all got something that drives us to be better, and mine happens to have been being an emotional eater, and it has completely driven me to be better. And to do the things like to meditate, to pray, to do all the things I do on a daily basis, I do them really because the things I do help me not have to overeat one day at a time.” (5:39)

“I think our nature is to like food and have an emotional attachment to food, I think God probably fashioned us that way so that we would subsist. But I think that people take it farther than others… it's really just a spectrum.” (13:13)

“The problem is that we are stressed out and we are not connected to ourselves. We are operating from the neck up and we are all in our heads but we are not in our hearts, not in our bodies and were really disconnected from our true selves, and that causes so much of our problem. It's really about getting back to being conscious if we were, and just really taking that journey from our head to our heart so that we can start to listen and start to really tune in to what's going on inside.” (19:41)

“In my program, I really teach people a lot about communication. Because you know we stuff our words with food and we don't speak up and we don't say what we really feel and mean” (23:41)

How do you currently care for your skin? Do you have any frustrations finding products that work for you? Let me know in the comments on the episode page!

Quotes:

“I realized that I wanted to get this message out to more people about the skin and its connection with health and how we can actually look at our skin as a tool rather than just what can we do to cover it up and suppress it.” (9:05)

“It’s really up to us to pay attention to what we are putting on our skin” (23:36)

“I started asking different estheticians and dermatologists I knew ‘what are the good natural skin care lines?’ and the answer they gave me really bothered me, which was you have to choose between natural or effective when it comes to skincare. Natural skin care products just don't work. And I thought well that's ridiculous.” (30:41)

“That was what I realized was missing in a lot of the natural skin care lines, is that they would have a lot of empty ingredients. And maybe they weren't toxic but they weren't the ones that were actually going to improve the quality of the skin. (31:38)

026: Gut Bugs Are The Root Cause of Fatigue, Weight Problems and Hormone Imbalance with Evan Brand
55:35

What We’re Talking About In This Episode!

  • How your fingernails can actually be an indicator of gut health
  • Evan’s theory of ‘test don’t guess’
  • Why living in a big urban city could be wreaking havoc on your toxin levels
  • Transitioning from fake food to real food
  • Gaining a nutritional insurance policy through enzymes

Episode Summary:

Today we are talking about how an unhappy gut can be the root cause of many health issues, including fatigue, weight problems and hormone imbalance. The gut is known as our second brain, and allows our body to function on a day to day basis. Gut bugs can cause inflammation, mood imbalance, and increase your risk of chronic disease, and much more.

There are very few doctors out there specifically trained to identify the root causes and educate their patients on these root causes, which is especially important when talking about gut health. Luckily, I am joined by one of those few specialists today, Dr. Evan Brand, to discuss all your questions about how the gut works.

Dr. Evan Brand is an author, podcast host, and certified functional medicine practitioner. After dealing with his own health struggles he started his company, Functional Medicine Clinic, to help his patients overcome issues such as chronic fatigue, obesity and depression.

Many of us are operating outside of mother nature’s natural rhythm because of the toxic environment we live in. In fact, chronic fatigue alone has increased 11,000 percent over the past decade. Now is the time to take back control over your gut health by focusing on fixing the root issues instead of just fixing the symptoms. It’s time to begin your proactive journey to better gut health and overall wellness, starting with Dr. Evan Brand’s expert advice.

Quotes:

“I didn’t really get out of this trench until I got rid of these infections. I had done the whole paleo thing, I dialed in the diet, tons of plants, organic as much as possible, all the good things you should be doing, meditation, all the cool stuff people talk about. But it didn’t work because I had these root causes.” (10:52)

“If you keep asking why usually you will get to the answer, and the answer is toxins.” (18:12)

“If you have symptoms now and know somethings not right, I encourage you to be more proactive instead of reactive. If you wait till you are at rock bottom and you are about to lose your job because you are so tired, you’re so depressed that you’re about to get a divorce, you have so many gut issues you can’t leave the house because you are stuck to the toilet. Look, those are extreme cases and that’s usually when people reach out, but I just want you to tell you that you don’t have to do that. If something is off now, why not figure it out sooner rather than later?” (31:55)

025: Is Coffee Bad For Your Adrenal Health with Dr. Mariza
48:07

What We’re Talking About In This Episode!

  • Is coffee feeding your chronic stress or fatigue?
  • All the factors that can influence how coffee affects you
  • How green smoothies helped me replace coffee
  • The difference between caffeine in matcha vs caffeine in coffee
  • Ways to give yourself an energy boost without the caffeine
  • Key remedies to help your body have more energy naturally

Episode Summary:

Recently I have been hearing a lot about a controversial subject in women’s health. The question that everyone’s asking me is, ‘is coffee bad for your adrenal health?’. There seems to be a new study every day villainizing our coffee habit, yet we still hear that coffee can be beneficial for many of our bodily functions. Today I am here to set the record straight about coffee and how it is affecting you.

Personally, I love coffee, it is part of my morning ritual and something I look forward to, but this wasn’t always the case. For many years I was using coffee to escape my zombie state, and it wasn’t until I broke up with coffee that I found out that coffee wasn’t the whole culprit.

Those of us who deal with chronic stress and chronic fatigue often supplement our lack of energy with caffeine. This can plague our adrenal glands which creates a domino effect that puts our bodies at a heightened survival state, which can make us feel awful. Because coffee affects everyone so differently, it is up to us to listen to our bodies and decipher for ourselves what levels of caffeine we can handle.  Coffee can have many health benefits as long as it is not being used as a crutch. Do you have a love or a hate relationship with coffee? Today’s episode will help you get your relationship with coffee back on track.

What’s your relationship with coffee like? Let me know in the comments on the episode page!

Quotes:

“Back in the day… I literally felt like a zombie just moving through the motions, of going through my day dealing with obligations and doing a lot of stuff I just really didn’t even enjoy, and coffee was one of those rare moments in my day that kinda felt like a self-care ritual but also gave me that little extra ‘umph’ to get the job done.” (6:08)

“Does coffee add to the chronic stress issue in a survival driven person? Yes, but not for everyone. If you are constantly in chronic stress or chronic fatigue mode and you are drinking caffeine, and it doesn’t have to be coffee it can be any type of caffeine, if you are drinking that to give you that advantage and keep you going, that’s when we have a situation on our hands.” (12:22)

“It is a little bit more complicated than just saying ‘hey, coffee is bad, don’t drink it anymore’, I am not making that statement. I am saying ‘hey, pay attention to your body, see what’s going on. If you can drink coffee and it doesn’t have any profound negative effect on you then keep doing what you are doing, if you are feeling amazing and its doing its job… then keep at it. I want you to do what you love and fuels your body and makes you feel good.” (28:12)

“If you are finding yourself exhausted, wound down, and not knowing what’s going on, and you are literally drinking coffee so you can crawl through your day, it’s time to re-evaluate what’s going on because it’s probably not your best friend.” (28:25)

  • Why you should start your day with gratitude
  • My favorite affirmations to help show yourself some love
  • The best essential oil blends to use during your happiness rituals

Happiness is something that alludes many of us. Only 1/3 of the population rate themselves as happy, meaning almost 70% of us are unhappy. We are struggling with a happiness epidemic in our country, and it is time for you to revamp your own overall life satisfaction.

Happy people are more resilient, have lower chances of getting disease, and have a longer life expectancy. But happiness is not a consequence or a reward, it is a state of mind that must be consciously thought about every day. By starting every day with intention, and treating happiness like a muscle that we need to exercise regularly, we can start to work on our happiness from the inside out.

One great way to increase your happiness is to practice self-care daily rituals. In this episode, I will share my two favorite daily rituals, plus some bonus essential oil blends and weekly rituals, to help you get your happiness back on track.

Episode Summary:

Today we are going to discover an issue that affects every man, woman and child every single day. I’m talking about toxic cleaning chemicals and household products. When I discovered the negative effects that these products were having on my hormones and overall health, my entire life changed.

Did you know that the air inside our homes is 200% - 500% more toxic than the air we breathe outside? This is because the harmful toxins found in cleaning and personal care products can lead to chronic diseases like autoimmunity, obesity, allergies and even cancer. By making over your cleaning cabinet to reduce your overall toxin load and help balance your hormones you will see amazing results in you and your family’s health.

If you have estrogen dominance, are chronically exhausted, have frequent migraines or are depressed, your body might be experiencing what I like to call pure hormone chaos. This is only magnified when we surround ourselves with toxic chemicals on a daily basis. By decreasing your and your family's exposure to these chemicals and silent toxins, you can improve your reproductive system, metabolism, brain function and so much more.

In this episode, I will give you all the tools you need to give your cleaning cabinet a full out makeover, including common household items that will not only help you clean healthier, but also save you money! Something needs to change in your lifestyle to protect your family and make you feel like you again, why not start with the cleaning cabinet?

Did any of the products mentioned strike a chord with you? Let me know in the comments on the episode page!

“Toxins play a huge, but overlooked, role in hormone imbalance. As a woman, it is important to understand the harmful effects that toxic ingredients have on the body, that are found in common cleaning and personal care products” (3:50)

“These chemicals hang out in our body and throw our hormones out of balance by messing with our liver, our digestive system, and even more so messing with the very same hormone receptors that are happening in the body” (7:43)

“You can easily makeover your entire cleaning routine in a few hours with just a handful of green cleaning ingredients, most of which you probably already have in your house” (13:51)

017: Why Self-Care is the Key to Your Success w/ Dr. Mariza
21:59

What We’re Talking About In This Episode!

  • The importance of self-care in every aspect of your life
  • How to stop putting yourself last
  • Achieve the success you know you are meant to have
  • Morning rituals that will nourish you and set you up for a fantastic day
  • Opening yourself to incredible success

Episode Summary:

On this episode of Essentially You, we're diving into one of my all-time favorite topics, self-care. This is one of my favourite topics because I continue to learn more about it every day, and it really has had a huge impact on my life, along with thousands of other women.

As women, we are raised to believe that our measure of success is how much we do for other people. However, in doing this we forget about the most important person of all – ourselves! Taking care of yourself is the key to your success, and can impact your health, energy, relationships, and so much more.

We need to stop believing that self-care is selfish because it is not. By taking 30 minutes a day to recharge our batteries and get our mind and body in the right place, we will be able to be more productive, more successful, and all around happier people.

Energy is everything, and we need to be fueled by our own happiness and fill our own cups first so that we can provide those we love with the same great energy. Taking care of ourselves means we are at our best when we need to take care of others, which is really our goal and nurturers.

Let me help you get started by sharing some of my favorite morning rituals as well as daily habits to help you create the day that you want based on your needs and priorities. Find out how giving compliments and expressing gratitude can not only affect your mood but also those around you. Dive into what makes a productive morning routine, and how to continue to use self-care practices throughout the day so you are putting your best energy forward.

It’s time to stop being someone who doesn’t even have 5 minutes to go to the bathroom alone, and start being the successful, happy and positive woman that you have been neglecting inside of you! Let’s get started.

Quotes:

“The emotional and physical energy you create from daily self-care shows up in how you approach everything else in your life, including your success.” (1:35)

“If you are feeling guilty about self-care I want you to take a long hard look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself, ‘do I have the energy that I need to show up in the world and be the person that I was meant to be?’” (3:35)

“You get to tune into as much joy and energy as you like. It’s all about shifting that belief and opening doors for more choices. Once you step into that higher energy you will begin to shift, and that includes your health, relationships, and so much more.” (16:21)

Do you have a feeling that a hormone imbalance may be keeping you from a healthier and happier life? Food is the one thing we do every day that we have control over, and it can have a major impact on our health and wellbeing.

By focusing on whole foods, and creating a new way of eating for yourself, you can repair your hormone imbalance and keep your body working smoothly. Magdalena gives us a lesson in hormone knowledge and I guarantee it will help women of any age. If you are looking for a cure for autoimmunity, thyroid issues, estrogen dominance, adrenal exhaustion, PCOS, menopause, or just not feeling right, this episode is for you.

“We are here to empower people. And I find that women who truly believe that things can happen and they don’t fall into the mentality of victimhood can absolutely reverse estrogen dominance” (21:44)

“This is 7 years of my work and research put onto one page so that you don’t have to do the work. Because it worked for me and it worked for thousands of other women” (36:22)

015: How To Look Beyond Nutrition To Achieve Ultimate Health with Teri Cochrane
36:25

What We’re Talking About In This Episode!

  • Teri’s go to detoxification juice and morning routine
  • The importance of listening to your body talk
  • Why stress is just like a cupcake and could be even worse for you than sugar
  • Learn the 4 major archetypes of Wildatarian’s
  • The super simple ‘Fab 5’ things you shouldn’t be living without

Episode Summary:

Are you ready for a ground-breaking approach to the way you eat? Today the magnificent Teri Cochrane is here to share how she has cracked the code on how to eat for your individual body. Teri creates bio-individualized nutrition plans based off of her client's genetic profiles by combining the latest research in biomechanics, epigenetics, and nutrition.

Through her practice, combining her countless years of research and working with patients, she has created the Wildatarian lifestyle and nutrition plan. Instead of viewing a diet as a restrictive measure, Teri redefines diets as how you interact with everything you consume in life. This includes food chemicals such as proteins and sulfur, hormones, and most importantly stress.

Today Teri shares the impact of herbicide roundups, pharmaceutical antibiotics and toxicity levels in what we eat, like red meat and chicken, and how they can have serious impacts on our hormone levels. It is necessary to understand not only how your body is reacting to the food you eat, but also how a large part of how we feel throughout the day is affected by stress. Stress can be a bigger issue than most women realize. Through Teri’s Wildatarian lifestyle you can open yourself up to a diet of abundance and joy. I promise you will see a huge result in not only your mental state but also your weight, energy and overall general health.

Have you ever experimented with individualized diet plans? How did they work compared to less specific plans? Leave us a comment on the show notes page!

Quotes:

“I have redefined diet to encompass everything that we consume in life, not just food. It is how we consume thoughts, our environment, how we consume the people in our lives and how we relate to them and they relate to us” (3:33)

“We are so excited to talk about this whole Wildatarian diet because I believe we have stumbled onto some real groundbreaking discoveries about our food supply and how it is potentially hurting us” (10:17)

“I cannot emphasize enough how deleteriously destructive stress is… Every thought we think has a wave pattern and that wave pattern has an expression and an outcome in our bodies which then results in diminished state of health or an increased state of health” (29:00)

“If we consume only that which serves our highest purpose we cannot intersect with disease, because we will be vibrating at a rate that is so high that it does not resonate with disease” (29:58)

  • Simple changes that can have the biggest impact on reducing and removing toxins from your body
  • Steps to quicken the process of toxin elimination
  • What you should consume to fight off toxins and what you should avoid to eliminate toxins

Episode Summary:

Most of us are aware of at least some the toxins in our daily lives, but do you know the chronic illnesses that are associated with them? These toxins are in the things we eat, drink, touch, and they’re slowly killing us. Today’s guest drops some important knowledge on how these toxins get into our bodies, what they’re doing to us, and most importantly, how we can eliminate them.

Lara Adler is an environmental toxins expert, educator, and certified holistic health coach who has made it her life's work to help both health practitioners and everyday people to increase their understanding and fluency around the most important issues regarding chemicals in our homes and our bodies. Even though this topic can be scary, it is extremely important that it’s discussed and that actionable steps are created, which thankfully for us, Lara shares in today’s episode.

We dive into what we should be consuming to help fight these toxins and what we should be avoiding, how we can eliminate the toxins that are currently in our systems, and how certain chemicals are directly linked to damaging our endocrine system and how we can fix it. This is an eye-opening episode that we all need to hear!

What do you do to fight the toxins in your system? What do you avoid to help decrease your exposure to those toxins? How have those things helped or hindered your health? Let us know in the comments on the episode page!

Quotes:

“In the United States there are about 84,000 chemicals that are registered for use in this country. Not all of them are actively being used but that's how many are registered. And, the vast majority of those chemicals have never been adequately tested for safety.” (6:30)

“We have to also turn our attention to the products that we are using and what we’re possibly being exposed to at home and all the places that we can actively address in our lives and start paying attention to that.” (16:34)

“If we give our body that chance, it can actually eliminate a lot of these chemicals on its own. But, the emphasis is on ‘if we give it the chance.” (24:42)

“When we marry or couple these avoidance behaviors with really focusing in on supporting our detoxification pathways through good nutrition and lifestyle practices like sweating and sleeping...then we can have a far more pronounced impact on our ability to address the toxins we are exposed to and it doesn’t have to be hard.” (33:26)

I literally didn’t have time to eat and prided myself on always being on the move, like most ‘superwomen’ out there” (1:15)

“Food is medicine at the end of the day, and today we are going to learn great tips that you can begin to implement immediately so that you feel really good about how your body is functioning and ultimately how your hormones are functioning as well” (4:35)

  • Some of the common places sugar is hiding that we may not realize
  • The benefits of reducing or eliminating your sugar intake

Episode Summary

Today we are discussing one of the most toxic relationships in everyone’s lives, sugar! I will be breaking down the 5 simple steps it takes to break up with sugar, and explain why living without sugar is the key to a better life.

In our modern-day society, sugar is almost unavoidable and indistinguishable, most of the time you don’t even know you are consuming it. Almost 75% of the food in the grocery store has added sweetener, and yet we continue to put these chemicals into our bodies and end up feeling terrible. The World Health Organization stated in 2015 that sugars should take up 5% of our diet. However, this is not the case for many people, and your health is suffering because of it! If you are thinking about breaking up with sugar than this episode is for you.

By replacing sugar with a positive lifestyle, and learning to love ourselves enough to break the habit, we can see an increase in our mood, energy, stamina and overall quality of life. Learn how an accountability partner can keep you on track, what starches and fibres to stay away from, and how Peppermint Oil can curb your cravings and be the ultimate weight loss tool. Ask yourself my 3 key questions to figure out if you have hidden sugar triggers in your life, and how to reverse our conditioned minds so you can stop getting instant gratification from sugar. As a bonus, listen to receive your free cheat sheet with recipes to help you stop cravings, increase energy and reset stress. Listen to today’s episode for all of this and more, and finally ditch sugar.

Have you made the switch off of sugar? What benefits did you notice? If you've tried before but couldn't pull it off, what was it that stopped you? Let us know in the comments on the episode page!

Today we’re talking to Dr. Jolene Brighten, the leading expert in post birth control syndrome, about what doctors don’t say about the pill, what women can do to manage the side effects, and coming off the pill safely.

Dr. Jolene is a functional medicine naturopathic doctor and is the founder of Rubus Health. She focuses on helping women who want to go off the pill and balance their hormones as well as those who want to stay on the pill while preventing long-term consequences.

She shares a patient’s success story of going off the pill and all the positive changes that took place. Quotes:

“Only a woman living in her body knows what’s normal and not normal for her.” 08:10

“It’s not that your body is betraying or revolting against you. Your body has been trying to communicate that something is not right for a while now, and it’s essentially had duct tape over its mouth, and when you stopped the pill, you took that duct tape off” 17:28

“If you don’t know what your purpose is or you feel like you’re not living in it, re-examine your health. It’s Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. If your physical body isn’t being cared for and provided for, it’s so much harder to show up in this world and do the work you need to do” 30:32
