Episode Date
Ghosts Book Club
01:12:11

This week we finally get to discuss our November Book Club pick, Ghosts by Dolly Alderton. This book captured modern dating in a way we haven’t seen before, and honestly, we can’t agree on if the ending was satisfying or not. Ghosts follows Nina Dean, a London woman in her early thirties with a successful career as a food writer and loving friends and family. When she downloads a dating app, she meets a great guy on her first date. When Max tells Nina he's going to marry her on date one, it feels like all is going to plan. But when Max ghosts her, Nina is forced to deal with everything she's been trying so hard to ignore.

All About Birthdays!
01:20:03

Since we both celebrated our birthdays recently, we thought it would be fun to spend today’s episode reminiscing and looking forward.

We reminisce on our most memorable birthdays as kids, have a very in-depth conversation about ice cream cake, and talk about how 40th birthday parties are the year to go ALL OUT. We also talk about aging and if/how milestone birthdays spark anxiety about getting older.

Also, Grace recaps her Vienna trip, Becca talks about her trip upstate, and we mourn the loss of a champagne-soaked memory card.

The Magic of Found Objects Book Club
01:15:30

It’s finally time for The Magic of Found Objects Book Club! This Book felt totally different than others we’ve read recently and we’re so excited to talk about it!

The story follows Phronsie, who was conceived at Woodstock by a free-spirited hippie mother and a practical farmer father. All her life she’s been torn between the two. After trying her hand at the NYC dating scene, her childhood best friend proposes that they give up on romance and marry each other. After Phronsie agrees, she meets someone who makes a case for revisiting romance. While her stepmother argues for the safety of the engagement, her birth mother relays messages from the universe to hold out for true love, and Phronsie must look to her own heart to find the answers.

In addition to talking all about the book, we also talk about Becca’s trip to Palm Beach, Grace’s birthday party prep, and the struggle of being a beginner again at something you used to be great at.

The Last Thing He Told Me Book Club
01:01:59

This month we read The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave, one of both of our favorite authors. We were already HUGE Laura Dave fans (she’s also the author of Eight Hundred Grapes and Hello Sunshine), and we were so excited to see her branch into totally new territory with a thriller! In the book, Hannah Hall’s husband, Owen, disappears after only one year of marriage, leaving behind a note that reads: “Protect Her.” Her is Owen’s teen daughter Bailey. Hannah and Bailey work together to unravel the mystery of Owen’s true identity and why he disappeared.

01:00:36

Whenever either one of us do a Q&A we get asked about working with an interior designer, so today we wanted to invite our friends (and interior designers!) Erin Gates & Emma Beryl to chat. Emma and Erin demystify the entire process of working with a designer (yes, even pricing!). They also share their experiences working with us, their favorite places to find great deals on decor items, and their thoughts on where to splurge and where to save. We also talk about ways to decorate a rental without breaking your budget. Best of all, they share their personal pet peeves when it comes to decorating.

Post Vax Life: What We’re Wearing & Where We’re Going
01:02:29

Last week we reflected back on quarantine and the positive things that came from it. Now that we are both fully vaccinated we thought it would be fun to look forward. This week, we are looking toward the future and thinking about life post-pandemic. We (unsurprisingly) are excited about travel and actually getting dressed again. Although we have very different ideas of what getting dressed looks like these days, we are still both excited to refresh our wardrobes and share our favorite purchases so far. We are also itching for some vacations, beaches, and most of all - getting Becca to Charleston to see Grace!

Favorite Snacks, Chores That Give Us A Rush, and The Brighter Side of Quarantine.
01:02:48

Today’s episode is a real grab bag! We start out with a topic close to Grace’s heart: snacks. We compare our snacking habits, our favorite snacks, and more. We also touch on our favorite chores (and our least favorites too!). You have probably never met two people who feel so strongly about doing laundry. And as we get closer to the end of quarantine and life going back to (almost?) normal, we also reflect on some bright sides of quarantine and what we are looking forward to now that we’ll both be fully vaccinated.

Delicious! By Ruth Reichl Book Club
01:11:15

Today is Book Club, and this month we read Delicious! By Ruth Reichl. The book tells the story of Billie Breslin, who learns at a young age she has an impeccable palate. Years later she drops out of college and moves from California to NYC to work for Delicious!, the country’s most prominent food magazine. Her life changes drastically as she forms new relationships with colleagues at the magazine, chefs, and shop owners. When Delicious! is unexpectedly shut down, Billie is kept on board to honor the Delicious! Guarantee, which is how she discovers a cache of letters from 12-year-old Lulu Swan to the famous chef James Beard from WWII. From there, Billie embarks on a culinary scavenger hunt through the library and ultimately to Akron, OH to find the adult Lulu Swan. We really enjoyed this book and we hope you did too! Clark’s Botanicals Founder, Francesco Clark, on How Vanity Saved His Life
01:07:30

In today’s episode we are joined by Francesco Clark, the founder of the clean beauty brand Clark’s Botanicals. Francesco shares the origin story of Clark’s Botanicals: When he suffered a devastating spinal cord injury, he found himself paralyzed. One unexpected side effect of his paralysis was that his body could no longer sweat… and as a result, his skin changed dramatically. Together with his father (a doctor trained in homeopathy), they created Clark’s Botanicals. Francesco explains the chemistry behind their active ingredient the Jasmine Catalyst Complex and chats about favorite products. He also also shares how he started the company, sold it, and bought it back. Francesco and his brand are pretty much the definition of resilience in our eyes, we hope you enjoy hearing from him as much as we did!

Listener Q&A: Big Life Decisions, Career Moves, Daily Routines, + More!
01:19:53

Grace has made it safe and sound to Charleston and we were due for catch up! We put a call out in the Facebook group for questions, and we tackle them all in today’s episode. We share our favorite book podcasts, how we choose what to read next, how we manage our day, and give advice to a listener on a big life decision. We also answer questions about if job hunting is all who you know, how to make friends in a pandemic (or in a new city), managing zoom fatigue, and the age-old question: is NYC worth the money?

We had so much fun answering your questions! Let us know if you would like to hear more Q&A episodes in the Facebook group!

Childhood Nostalgia: Pogs, Beanie Babies, Starter Jackets, and Mall Culture
01:01:17

Today’s episode was the last one we recorded together while Grace was living in Brooklyn! As we embark on a new (remote) era of the podcast we thought it would be fun to take a walk down memory lane and talk about all of our childhood favorite things. As two weird kids (and now, weird adults), there were a lot of fun and silly memories to share. We share the things that we collected, the foods we coveted (and our strange bagged lunches), our love for the mall and our favorite childhood books. Unpopular opinions: controversial things we love + hate
01:08:01

Between Grace’s upcoming move to Charleston and Becca’s immersion in RomComPods Season 3 production, we realized we haven’t had much time to catch up! So this week is a little off the rails grab-bag episode where we embrace all of our most unpopular opinions on popular things, and the other way around. It’s always fun to unearth more things that we don’t know about each other. This includes but is definitely not limited to our trash people tendencies, lowbrow loves, overrated beauty products... and to be honest - a lot of thoughts on cheese.

If I Had Your Face Book Club
01:05:21

For this month’s book club we read If I Had Your Face by Frances Cha. Just 30 pages into this book, we both knew it had to be our book club pick. Neither of us haven read anything like it before and there is so much to talk about. The story revolves around 4 women who all live in the same apartment building in contemporary Seoul, South Korea. The book explores impossible beauty standards and strict social hierarchies, fangirling over K-POP bands, jealousy, relationships, sex work and room salons. We discuss plastic surgery, the fast-paced Korean Beauty market, the feelings around family and marriage in Korea, and more.

2021 Resolutions
01:13:57

It’s the time of year where we reflect on past resolutions and create new ones for the new year ahead. As we look back on the insanity of 2020 and the way that it affected our goals and ability to achieve them, we found some silver linings! Although we are definitely cautious as we set our 2021 goals, we’re also optimistic. We talk about our personal, business, and mental and physical health resolutions and the steps we are taking to get there. Whether you like to make resolutions or you just like to wing it, we support it! If we learned anything in 2020, it’s that this year needs to be about being good to yourself.

The Cousins Book Club
01:00:12

For the last book club of 2020, we chose The Cousins by Karen McManus. This is a twisty YA thriller, sans murder - making it kind of the perfect book for both of us! This is the tale of Milly, Aubrey, and Jonah Story: three cousins who barely know each other but are invited to work at their estranged grandmother’s resort. All of their parents have been disinherited and the cousins learn more and more about the dark secrets of their family’s past. We chat about which cousins we relate to most, our theories about the ending, and our interest in the psyche of the adult characters. We both really enjoyed this book and we hope you did too!

Destination Wedding Book Club
01:00:19

For our November Book Club we read Destination Wedding by Diksha Basu. This book is exactly what we needed as we are both missing travel, meeting new people, and big events like weddings! The story follows Tina Das, a Brooklynite who is traveling to India with her divorced parents and her best friend to attend a cousin’s lavish wedding. Both Tina and her father are looking for love while on their trip, with some pretty mixed results. This book was such a fun read that will have you laughing, and, if you’re like us, wanting to be best friends with the main character.

Also tune in Friday for a bonus episode with the author! Join us in the FB group and let us know what you think of the book, and let’s talk about other book characters you’d want to be best friends with!

You Had Me at Hola Book Club
01:01:51

For this month’s book club, we read  You Had Me at Hola by Alexis Daria. This is the story of Jasmine Lin Rodriguez, the lead actress of the telenovela “Carmen in Charge.” She plans to swear off men and follow her Leading Lady Plan, but her plan is compromised when she falls for her co-star, Ashton Suarez. They want to keep things private, but the paparazzi makes this impossible, causing a lot of strain on their budding relationship. This was essentially a RomCom about a RomCom (peak Becca genre), and we had a lot to talk about! This book is steamy in all the right places, while still tackling some more serious issues (LatinX underrepresentation in the film/TV world, consent). Though both characters make some arguably bad decisions, and kept some big secrets, we stood by them til the end and really enjoyed this book.

We loved this book, and hope you did too, let’s talk more in the FB group! And come back tomorrow for a special bonus episode with the author.

Bad on Politics #8: Yvanna Cancela
33:48

Yvanna Cancela represents Nevada’s 10th district in the State Senate, and is the first latina to ever serve in the chamber. Today she joins us to share all the ways you can *still* get involved and make a difference this election. With the election coming SO SOON it’s important to get clarity on the process and the ways that you can donate your time (or money) to help the causes you care about.

As the first ever latina to serve in the State Senate, Yvanna is wildly aware of the gender and racial representation problems our country faces and strives to elevate diverse voices in politics, because that truly is the only way the country will progress toward equality. We discuss how to get involved in battleground states, voting strategies, researching candidates, which races she is watching closely, and why she backs Joe Biden for President.

About Bad on Politics: Bad on Politics is a monthly bonus episode where we invite a guest expert to help us break down a political topic. We get it, politics is confusing and there's a anxiety-inducing amount of news coverage to follow. So, we're here to ask the "dumb" questions so you don't have to. We want to break things down so you can understand what's going on and make an informed opinion.

Career Q&A Part 1!
01:31:31

It’s been a while since we have talked about our jobs and answered your career questions so today… we’re doing it! We got so many questions that we split ‘em up into two episodes, so stay tuned for part 2!

Today we have a mix of personal questions about our careers and some of your more meaty, specific scenarios. We dig into the different ways we have built up our audience and client base, vetting clients and determining your worth. We talk about our 5-10 year plan (more like, lack thereof!), grad school, imposter syndrome, how to effectively network and how our political beliefs have affected the podcast and our jobs. We really loved all of your specific work questions, and we give advice to folks who have been encountering challenges with job titles, managing people, asking for more money (what is your spaghetti number?), and being pigeonholed into a role you dislike. The Comeback Book Club
01:09:29

For our August Book Club we read The Comeback by Ella Berman. The book follows Grace Turner, a young actress who disappeared from Hollywood at the height of her career. During her rise to fame as a teenager, she was sexually and emotionally abused by Abel Yorke, the director who made her famous. After she’s invited to present him with a lifetime achievement award she begins to plot her revenge. Even though Grace is a pretty unlikeable character we still loved her story and root for her revenge. This book isn’t in either of our normal wheel houses, but we loved the story and hope you loved it too! Let’s discuss in the FB group!

A game of ‘Would You Rather’
52:23

We decided to do a lighter episode this week. On instagram we asked you to propose some fun ‘would you rather’ scenarios and boy, did you deliver! Some are crazy (but for better or worse we still made our choice!), some are silly, and we definitely didn’t agree on everything. Which one of us would give up booze? Which one would give up travel? Who would rather have a lobster claw for an arm than a floor length white beard? What could make us give up books? What about quarantining forever? You can learn a lot about a person in a good game of WYR.  We hope this episode makes you laugh!

She’s baaaack! Our most popular guest Carly Heitlinger (of the lifestyle blog Carly the Prepster!) joins us this week to catch up on how she is feeling at this point in the pandemic and what she has been doing to cope with anxiety and inability to really plan anything. Anything… but her upcoming wedding, that is! She gives us the scoop on her super-surprise proposal and tells us more about her fiance Mike (and his family). We also talk a little bit about politics and Carly’s decision to endorse Joe Biden. Lastly, we chat about blogging during a pandemic - it’s definitely been interesting? Traci from The Stacks joins us for a great conversation about books, podcasting, and more!
01:41:38

This week we are joined by Traci Thomas! Traci is the host of The Stacks Podcast, a mom to twin girls, and an avid non-fiction reader. We get a behind the scenes look at how she chooses books for the pod, her favorite books of 2020 (and all time), and talk about the book she wishes would be written. We loved getting her perspective as she’s such a big non-fiction reader and both filled up our Bookshop.org carts with her recs while recording this episode. We talk about BLM, Black authors, and how to really do anti-racism work. We also chat about what happened with Book of the Month and how she is feeling about that.

The Vanishing Half Book Club
01:09:22

This month, we read The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett. This the story of identical twin sisters (and their daughters) spanning the fifties through the nineties. Desiree and Stella are inseparable growing up in the fictional light-skinned Black town of Mallard, Louisiana during the fifties in the Jim Crow-era south. When they are 16, they run away together to New Orleans. From there, their lives take completely different turns. Desiree marries a dark-skinned man and returns home to raise her daughter in Mallard, while Stella goes on to pass for white - hiding her identity and past from her new family. The book follows the girls’ stories and their daughters, who eventually end up meeting via a chance encounter. We discuss colorism, the theme of running away throughout the book, our interpretations of the title, and our mixed reviews on the ending. Although this book has been in the works for 4 years, its release couldn’t be more timely, as the story has such pointed views about race and privilege. We can’t wait to hear what you think of the book! Join in the discussion on the Facebook Group.

Bonus Episode with Elizabeth Acevedo
49:35

Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Elizabeth Acevedo, the author of our June book club pick, Clap When You Land. Elizabeth is a NYT best-selling author and we couldn’t be more excited to talk to her about the book. We learn of her early start in writing as a rapper and poet, her first job as a middle school teacher, and the road to her first publishing deal. We explore the birth of Clap When You Land, the meaning behind the title, the unique way she developed the characters distinct voices, and the differences between writing in prose and verse. We touch on the #publishingpayme movement and the importance of building a strong online community to keep you motivated and excited about your work. Elizabeth also gives us her favorite YA recs, childhood favs, and gives a taste of what she is working on next!

Clap When You Land Book Club
48:51

For this month’s book club, we read Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo. We absolutely loved this book. It’s prose, written in verse, which makes the story even more engaging (and the lines more powerful and poignant). This is the story of two 16 year old girls, Yahaira and Camino who lose their father in a plane crash. Both girls (growing up in New York City and the Dominican Republic, respectively) grow up loving their father and having a close relationship with him. But upon his death, they learn of each other. The book tells each of their stories and struggles. We absolutely loved this book and enjoyed discussing it!

Ayana Lage on Anti-Racism on Social Media, Going Viral, and Being a Black influencer Right Now
01:25:28

Ayana Lage is a freelance marketer and writer in Tampa. More recently, a few of her videos about Black Lives Matter went viral. (We highly recommend her as a resource for everything from virtue signaling to microaggressions, and her stance on Blackout Tuesday, and more to come!) She joins us today to talk about the intensity of the last few weeks, and her thoughts on it all. Everything from how it feels to go viral, what brands can do to be more inclusive (and who is doing it right!), and how growth on her platform is affecting her life personally and professionally. She answers your questions about how the regular person can use their social media presence to support Black Lives Matter and support anti-racist activism. Do yourself a favor and check out her videos and follow her for continued education and insight.

This week we are using our platform to spotlight the incredible Black authors that we love. We have gathered some of our favorite books and also invited our past podcast guests ‘drop by’ to give their recs, too! We know that many people (including us!) are looking for ways to learn more about anti-racism, things that we can do, and ways to support the Black community in an active way. So we encourage you to pick up a book, share with your friends, buy from Black-owned bookstores, and continue to learn and grow.

We look forward to discussing these books with you in the facebook group!

The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires Book Club
01:03:20

For this month’s book club we’re discussing The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendricks. This book came highly recommended by Grace’s mom and it definitely sparked some fun conversation. While this is not the type of book either of us typically pick up, we wanted something more fun to take some pressure off during quarantine.

The story follows Patricia Campbell, a southern housewife, who joins a true crime book club where she forms a tight knit group of female friends. When they discover that their neighbor, James Harris, is actually a vampire who is terrorizing the town and feeding on children, the women of the book club stand up to take matters into their own hands. Who ever thought a book club would end in cold-blooded murder?!

We’re covering everything from AIM screennames and celebrity crushes (Grace and Paul Rudd are going backpacking together? Becca stalks Scott Foley’s wife for updates?) to home decor inspo, how we found (and decorated our apartments), our favorite artists, and go-to gifts to give. Celebrity Tanner & Isle of Paradise Founder, Jules Von Hep, on Body Positivity, Self Tanning, and Building his Brand.
01:18:17

After a highly requested (micro) deep-dive into Normal People (we loved the show maybe even more than the book!), we chat with Jules Von Hep! Jules is a celebrity tanning expert and the founder of the (clean! vegan!) line Isle of Paradise. We chat with him about how quarantine is going in the UK and then move along to his career and how he founded Isle of Paradise.

He walks us through his career path and how he got to where he is today (he’s tanned everyone from Kate Moss to Kendall Jenner!),how + why he started Isle of Paradise, and of course all his best self-tanning advice - answering all of your self tanning questions and providing helpful tips for first timers. But the best part of the interview was all of the incredible life advice. Jules talks about saying no (his advice here is so good), navigating negativity, and how to be more body confident!

In Five Years Book Club
54:49

This month, we read In Five Years by Rebecca Serle. We both absolutely loved this book and read it in under 24 hours. Before diving into the book, we do our usual quarantine catch up. We are both healthy, staying busy, and Tyrion (Grace’s cat) seems to have developed a newfound love for Zoom calls.

This book is about best friends, Dannie and Bella. Dannie is a little bit uptight and is one of those women who always has a plan and knows exactly what she wants. Meanwhile, Bella is a bit more flighty and romantic. On the night that Dannie gets engaged to her long-time boyfriend, David, she has an extremely vivid dream of where her life will be in 5 years. She’s in a different apartment, with a different (and sexy) man. We then see how the next five years play out and what happens. Dannie is jilted when she meets Bella’s new boyfriend Greg - it’s the man from her dream! Bella falls ill and a series of other events happen to turn Dannie’s life upside down. She ends up exactly where the dream predicted - discovering that fate is most certainly real.  This book will make you cry - but the good kind! This is our favorite book from 2020 - we hope you love it as much as we did!

FMK: Quarantine Edition
55:08

Today, we poured ourselves a glass of wine and play a remote game of FMK (Fuck, Marry, Kill) with YOUR prompts! But first, we catch up on how we are holding up in quarantine. We are definitely a mix of adjusting and feeling trapped, but over all we are doing alright.

This episode is a weird one and we are into it. We go through all the important categories… books, meals, celebs, TV characters. Becca kills breakfast (and short men?) and Grace makes a surprising choice when it comes to the Younger cast. Also: who knew the hardest questions would be about food?? We hope you enjoy and are inspired to prompt your friends… we highly recommend setting up a FMK Zoom with your own friends!

Bad on Politics #6: Stacey Abrams on Voting Rights
29:18

Stacey Abrams, needs no introduction but we’ll give her one anyway. She’s a New York times bestselling author, non profit CEO, and political leader.. and today she joins us to answer all our questions about voting rights: an incredibly important issue that we didn’t know NEARLY enough about before this interview.

After losing her 2018 Georgia gubernatorial race, Abrams created Fair Fight to ensure that all Americans were able to vote and to have their votes counted. We talk to her about the different forms of voter suppression and how this disproportionately affects people of color, women, the elderly, and college students. We also discuss how we can make sure we have a safe and fair election in 2020.

Investing 101: Sallie Krawcheck on the gender wealth gap
01:17:58

In today’s episode, we chatted with Sallie Krawcheck (founder and CEO of Ellevest) about the relationship women have with investing. Sallie has been one of our dream guests for some time now and we both learned so much from our conversation. Sallie explains the difference between the wage gap and the wealth gap for women, and the different ways that women spend, save, and manage money. Sallie gives us advice about saving vs. investing, how to get lower interest rates, common mistakes, and how to be more critical about where your money is invested. We also get personal, talking marriage, prenup meltdowns, educating your children about money, and more!

27:24

We couldn’t stop thinking (or talking) about this book and our friend Jess, so we asked friend of the pod, Katie Sturino to join us to discuss Jessica Simpson’s memoir, Open Book. Forget what you think you know about Jessica Simpson (seriously, none of us were superfans or even really fans before this book, but we sure as hell are now!). Her book dives deep into her childhood, music career, relationships, and struggles with addiction. Needless to say,  we could not get enough! We discuss the juicy celebrity goss, body image issues, family dynamics, and more in this ep. Seriously, if you haven’t read (or listened to this book!), we can’t recommend it enough. Looking forward to hearing your hot takes, join us in the FB group to discuss!

I’ll Give You The Sun Book Club
01:10:20

Our March Book Club Pick is I’ll Give you the Sun by Jandy Nelson. Before we get into the book, we talk a little bit about Coronavirus and how we’re feeling. This book is the perfect quarantine read as it feels a bit like a cozy warm hug.

The book is the story of Jude and Noah - twins who were once inseparable, but have now grown apart. Via alternating timelines, we learn the heartbreaking reasons that this has happened. Noah tells the story of their younger years, meanwhile Jude’s timeline takes place three years later when they are 16. It’s magically written and a feel good read… we can’t recommend it enough!

Stay safe and healthy, and come join us in the Facebook group to talk about the book!

Bad on Politics #5: Planned Parenthood’s Kelley Robinson on Reproductive Rights
35:16

Kelley Robinson, Executive Director of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund joins us to answer all of our questions about the state of reproductive rights. Kelley explains some common misconceptions around Planned Parenthood, and then helps us to understand the spike in abortion restrictions that happened in 2019. We also dig into the abortion case currently in front of the supreme court, and talk about other cases being heard by the Supreme Court this year. Then we talk about Title X and dive into how reproductive rights figure into the 2020 election.

All Things Reading! Nostalgia, How We Manage To Read So Much, + More.
01:18:27

In this episode we dive into our personal reading histories and talk about our reading lives. We share stories about how we became readers, our favorite childhood books - Sweet Valley High, Babysitters Club, R.L. Stein, etc. Although we have different reading routines, ways we organize books, and views on putting a book down (to DNF or not to DNF, that is the question!) - we can agree that vacation reading is the best reading. We share our favorite recent books, our process for vetting the books for our monthly book club, and the  books we think are overrated. If you ever have trouble finding new books, or picking something to read we list our top ways to find new reads.

Tara Foley, founder of Follain, tells us everything we need to know about clean beauty
01:37:35

In this episode we talk clean beauty with the founder of Follain, Tara Foley. Tara, a self-described “activist-at-heart” shares with us her journey from discovering clean beauty to opening Follain. We dive deep on what clean really means and the regulation around the terms natural and clean (spoiler: there is none). She also gives us her top ingredients to watch out for. Our favorite part of the episode, though, has to be Tara’s amazing product recs. We chat about everything from budget-friendly to high-tech clean beauty recs and she gives us specific suggestions for both dry skin and acne-prone skin routines. If you’re thinking about using more clean products, Tara makes that sound a whole lot less daunting and this episode is the perfect place to start!

Followers Book Club
01:20:02

Followers by Megan Angelo is a thought provoking take on influencer culture. The book alternates between the present day story of Orla and Floss living in modern day New York with their own reality TV show; and Marlow, 35 years from now living in a town called Constellation where influencers have become government employees and have their lives broadcasted 23/7. It’s sharp and witty (and a bit of a cautionary tale - when does sharing go TOO FAR?) This book is a great conversation starter and will take you on a wild ride from New York to California to a futuristic (internet-free) colony called Atlantis. We couldn’t put this book down and are still thinking about it weeks later!

Being Single Doesn’t Have to Suck!
01:35:51

In this (highly requested) episode we are talking about being single in your thirties! We answer all of your questions about dating, and give the best advice we can from our own experiences. This episode is broken into four parts: why being single in your thirties is actually pretty great, how to stay positive, how to make new friends (and keep the old), and all things DATING (another hot topic). We share our weirdest dates, our favorite apps (and when to delete them), ways to meet people IRL, thoughts on freezing our eggs, and managing dating app burnout. If there’s one thing you take away from this episode, it’s the importance of building a life you truly love - one that feels good to YOU… with our without a partner!

Claire Mazur and Erica Cerulo on work wifing, closing their business, and the decision whether to have kids
01:42:32

This is hands down one of our favorite interviews yet! Erica Cerulo and Claire Mazur, founders of Of a Kind (RIP!), join us to talk about founding and running a business with your friend. We dive into how they split their roles in the business, travel styles, and hiring a management coach (AKA a business therapist). We also chat about how they’re processing the closure of their company and what’s next.

Then we turn to the subject of motherhood, and have an incredibly candid conversation about how Claire grappled with whether or not she wanted children, how Erica has defended her choice not to have children, and how they’ve supported each other and stayed close despite their disparate decisions. We wrap up with some recommendations for everything from skincare to podcasts to books.

Good Girls Lie Book Club
01:10:35

This month we read Good Girls Lie by J.T. Ellison. This book combines some of our favorite things: rich unsupervised teens at a boarding school, secret societies… and murder. Ash is an outcast, relocating from England to attend boarding school at the prestigious Goode School in Virginia. Her parents have passed away, she has an abusive past with her father, and she definitely has a lot of secrets. When she gets tapped for the Ivy Bound secret society, things go haywire. Her roommate dies and now we are trying to figure out who did it and why. Even though we found (nearly) every character to be deeply unlikable, we still really enjoyed the book. We got to rehash our love for secret societies (and the movie The Skulls). Grace reveals what happens in her sorority’s initiation rituals... and that she doesn’t like Gilmore Girls (gasp!).

Bad on Politics #4: Alyssa Mastromonaco on congressional elections and a grab bag of questions!
47:11

We welcome back friend of the pod (and former Obama Deputy Chief of Staff), Alyssa Mastromonaco to answer our burning questions about this presidential election. Alyssa explains what happens to donations when a candidate drops out of the race, endorsements, and where you can go to find out more about the local politics that you can have a direct effect on. She also touches on Amy Klobuchar, Elizabeth Warren, Mike Bloomberg, and why we need to keep an eye on how the candidates spend their money (like during the Superbowl). She also explains how the caucus system works (it’s kind of crazy!) and why local politics are so important if you want to enact real change.

New Year, Same Us: Reflecting on 2019 and Setting Goals for 2020!
01:17:17

It’s a brand new year (and a brand new decade!).  While neither of us are huge fans of setting “resolutions,” (it just sounds so drastic!) today we wanted to reflect on last year and share some goals for 2020! This week we are looking back on 2019 and sharing our biggest accomplishments from the year (and what could have been better) and setting some goals for the year ahead! We have have a few shared goals too (growing the pod, making Delta platinum, to name a couple). We both have a lot to be thankful for and a lot to look forward to. So here’s to making this year calmer, cozier, and even better than the last!

Kellie Brown on body positivity, her #fatatfashionweek hashtag, confidence, + more!
01:19:33

Happy New Year! Today our friend Kellie Brown joins us. Kellie is the founder of And I Get Dressed, a brand consultant, blogger + Youtuber, fashion industry PR prodigy, and body positive activist (she created the #fatatfashionweek hashtag)... amongst other things! She is a long time New Yorker, who recently made the move to LA and tells us about her career journey, the evolution of her blog + Youtube channel, and working for herself. She shares her views on weight loss, the dangers of “new year, new me” mentality, confidence, the ways that people can weaponize words, and a quick cheat sheet on how to respond to fat-phobic friends and family. She also shares her “mirror trick” for self confidence. Kellie talk about what she is most proud of in her career and gives advice on how to make even the most basic (or some my say, classic!) wardrobe cooler with just a few key pieces.

One Day in December Book Club
01:06:46

For our December book club, we’re reading One Day in December by Josie Silver. This was one of our favorite books from last year, so we had to make it a book club pick! What would you do if you had a “love at first sight” moment, but the man of your dreams turns out to be your best friend’s new boyfriend? The book follows the three of them over the course of a decade through life’s ups & downs and heartbreaks as they each grow and change. Grace reveals she once had her own “bus boy”. Both Grace and Becca share opinions on audiobooks (nuances and lack thereof in some cases), meeting men (#morecrushes2020), modern dating, and definitely think this should be a Hallmark movie.

You probably know her from her podcast, Be There in Five… OR her book Twinkle, Twinkle Social Media Star, her hilarious pop culture commentary on Instagram, or her viral doormat business. She talks about how she started her business, how she came up with the idea for the podcast, and her career journey. We talk about press trips, Instagram triggers, the influencers we admire most, and (of course) Taylor Swift, and why Kate is such a Stan. Kate makes her 2020 predictions for pop culture and influencer trends and gives great advice on following your dreams and how to inoffensively block your significant other and family on Instagram.

More Kate!

Bad on Politics #3: WTF is Medicare for all? Margot Sanger-Katz gives us a healthcare primer
41:23

In this episode of Bad on Politics we dive into one of our most-requested topics… healthcare!

We’re joined by New York Times journalist, Margot Sanger-Katz, to break down the various healthcare structures on the table in this election and which candidates support which plan. We also spend some time discussing the implications of these plans and whether they’re feasible (or likely given our current congressional map). We’re certainly feeling way more healthcare-literate after this episode, and hope you do too!

Becca Interviews Grace! The blogging biz, dating stories, + more!
01:19:40

For this month’s “Just Us” episodes, Becca had the idea to interview each other! This week Becca interviews Grace and in two weeks, Grace will interview Becca. We crowdsourced the questions from you and had so much fun interviewing each other.

You already know Grace but today she’s answering your questions. What really goes into working for yourself as an influencer, the nitty gritty behind choosing brands to work with, how sponsorships work, testing products, and even turning down brands she doesn’t like (awkward!). She shares some of her best dating advice and tells some juicy stories too! We chat about her love of Becca’s cooking, her work ethic, her love affair with Charleston, and of course her cat, Tyrion too!

Andrea Dunlop (the author of We Came Here to Forget) talks to us about her book!
51:55

Yesterday we talked about We Came Here to Forget by Andrea Dunlop and today we’re so happy to have her with us for a special bonus episode where we talk about the book! We talk to her about her writing process and how she developed the plot line for the book (which is somehow both thrilling with a happy redemption story). We loved this book, and we learned more about Andrea’s personal experiences that led to writing this. She set out to debunk myths about the issue and what pop culture is getting right and wrong about Munchausen’s by proxy. Andrea is a pantser (not a plotter) when it comes to writing, and she reveals her process, the importance of resilience in the industry, and how she gives back to the community through social media.

We Came Here to Forget Book Club
01:19:07

For this month’s book club, we’re talking about We Came Here to Forget by Andrea Dunlop. The book follows ex-professional skier, Katie Cleary as she starts a new life in Buenos Aires. Along the way, this book kept us guessing about the dark secret in her past that led her to move away and start a new life. We both devoured this book in one day: Grace needed to find out the shocking truth about Katie’s sister, while Becca was living for Katie’s story of redemption in Argentina—complete with tango lessons and a new, foreign lover.

Lauren Chan on modeling, her new plus-size luxury clothing brand, and leaning into what makes you unique.
01:29:14

Today we are joined by Lauren Chan, the founder and CEO of Henning, a newly launched luxury plus-size clothing brand. We’re completely in love with this brand and all its thoughtful details! We’re also obsessed with Lauren, TBH. She gives us a peek into her experiences as both a plus-size model and fashion editor for Glamour Magazine. We get her insight into how the plus-size modeling landscape has changed over the years and how modeling has affected her relationship with her body. Maybe most interesting, she pulls back the curtain on all the retouching (and padding!) that goes on behind the scenes. We’re shook! We also chat about her experience starting her own business (without any outside funding!), and the lessons she’s learned along the way.

Personality Tests! A deep dive into the 5 love languages, The Enneagram, + Myers Briggs
01:14:22

We don’t know about you but we are both personality test obsessed. Today we’re taking a look at three of our favorites: the 5 love languages, the Enneagram, and Myers Briggs. Every personality has its good and its bad, and we are both very cool with both sides of our own (thankfully!) If you ever think that Becca is roasting Grace, don’t worry - that is how she shows love. We also break down introverts vs. extroverts. Grace gets on her soapbox: Just because you’re introverted doesn’t mean you’re shy! We have a ton in common personality - wise, but when we differ, we definitely DIFFER! Take the quizzes yourself and see what we all have in common, and then come about them with us in the facebook group!

01:40:46

Today we are joined by Eva Chen! Eva probably needs no introduction but she’s the Director of Fashion Partnerships at Instagram. What you may not know is that she’s also a children’s book author and the self proclaimed “Walter White of vintage Chanel jackets!” Eva talks about everything from changing careers, meeting your heroes IRL (Oprah!!), getting a book deal, and following your dreams. She also gets vulnerable, talking about what it’s like to worry that people won’t like her work. We round out the episode with all of Eva’s favorites: up & coming fashion designers, beauty obsessions (a very fancy face roller), a fancy hotel, and of course — YA novels.

She also tells us her favorite fashion trends, products… even her work out routine. She also lets us in on a few model secrets (her swap for soy sauce, her cocktail of choice).
