Have the robots taken over?

Nope.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't hop on the ChatGPT craze. This conversational AI writing tool can help you escape the blank page. However, it won't make you an A+ student or an amazing expert — it still needs a human hand to provide helpful content for your customers.

I'll let ChatGPT explain itself:

ChatGPT is designed to generate responses to text prompts in a conversational style, making it well-suited for tasks such as chatbots, conversational agents, and dialogue systems. It can be used to generate responses to questions, carry out conversations, or provide helpful information in real-time.

Persuasive Copy

Writing persuasive copy is one of the most important skills you can have in business. It allows you to influence people and get them to take action.

This week's Livestream podcast episode is ALL ABOUT the best ways to write persuasive copy WITHOUT feeling icky. We'll help you write more persuasive copy to create incredibly powerful email marketing and social media posts.

Words of Wisdom

Pabbly Connect is an attractive alternative to Zapier (especially if you're paying for Zapier).

  • Pabbly is a whole suite of products (formed, payments, email marketing, etc.), but I don’t recommend anything other than Pabbly Connect at this time because there are more robust, specialized tools available for subscriptions, forms and email marketing.

Tweak of the Week: Pipedrive

People ask me about the 'best CRM' all the time. Selecting a CRM (customer relationship management) is wholly based on your individual business needs.

For example, one of the best CRMs available is Square. If that's your sole payment processor, it may be your best bet.

If you have an email marketing system (e.g., ActiveCampaign) that includes a CRM, that could be easiest because all of your emails and sales information are in one place.

This week's show, we highlighted Pipedrive.

  • Pipedrive
  • Sales-focused
  • Can get expensive if you need the add-on features (e.g., leads, documents, campaigns, etc.)
  • Some integrations are great, others not so great (or require Zapier/Pabbly)

“You will get all you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want.” — Zig Ziglar

Focus on being the best person you can be in the present moment. On doing the right thing, right now. Be good and noble now—while it still matters.

Can I do the right thing and not care about credit?

This is difficult because we all want to get paid for our efforts. That’s why it is so challenging to start your own business and stick with it when you are not making any money in the beginning. But if I keep practicing what I do and offering value to anybody who is interested, it will pay off.

I believe that is true and I look for the joy along the way to keep going.

36:14

How to Build Your Product Ladder

Why do you need a product ladder? How can you attract leads and increase sales even in uncertain economic times?

A product ladder is a range of products varying in price and features. Product ladders make it easier for potential customers to get a sampling of your work or to jump in all the way. You can create a product ladder by breaking services into smaller chunks or offering products or services in bundles or packages.

How do you get started building a product ladder?

Questions answered in this episode:

  • How can you attract leads and increase sales even in uncertain economic times?

What, then, makes a person free from hindrance and self-determining? For wealth doesn’t, neither does high-office, state or kingdom—rather, something else must be found . . . in the case of living, it is the knowledge of how to live. —EPICTETUS, DISCOURSES, 4.1.62–64

You have two essential tasks in life: to be a good person and to pursue the occupation that you love. Everything else is a waste of energy and a squandering of your potential.

How does one do that? OK, that’s a tougher question. But the philosophy we see from the Stoics makes it simple enough: say no to distractions, to destructive emotions, to outside pressure.

Ask yourself: What is it that only I can do? What is the best use of my limited time on this planet? Try to do the right thing when the situation calls for it. Treat other people the way you would hope to be treated. And understand that every small choice and tiny matter is an opportunity to practice these larger principles.

What are my tasks in this life?

My tasks are to help older people share their message of wisdom, peace, and hope with the world by setting up a home studio and putting out content every week.

How to Find the Perfect Opt-In to Boost Sales
50:11

Your Perfect Opt-In

The top marketing experts tell us to build our “business home” on “owned property,” not the “rented land” of social media. That means we need to establish and grow an email list where our most loyal and interested audience can be reached.

But how do we get them to sign up?

We offer them the perfect opt-in, free download, automated webinar, …. lead magnet. Then, over time, we can offer them all our products and services while we nurture and build a relationship with them.

How do we know what will be the perfect, irresistible opt-in? That's what we'll discuss in this exciting and revealing episode.

Words of Wisdom

We overthink this whole process. Your first opt-in is really what do you know like the back of your hand that's related to something that you do and that's interesting to people? — Jen

Once people sign up and opt-in to your community because of that opt-in lead magnet, then they expect more of that throughout your emails and newsletters, your offerings, all your products, all your shows, everything has got to be in alignment with whatever you're putting out there as an opt-in. That's how you're going to get a higher open rate on your emails. — Shelley

There is no good for a human being except what creates justice, self-control, courage, and freedom, and nothing evil except what destroys these things. — Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

What’s the meaning of life? Why was I born? Most of us struggle with these questions. No amount of travel, reading or clever sages can give you the answer.

It is not our question to ask. Instead, it is we who are being asked and our lives are the answer. You must find the answer in your actions, in living the good life—by embodying the principles of justice, self-control, courage, freedom, and abstaining from evil.

Do my principles show themselves in my life?

Do they show up in my work and the content I produce?

Epictetus once said, “If anyone would take two words to heart and take pains to govern and watch over themselves by them, they will live an impeccable and immensely tranquil life. The two words are: persist and resist.” That’s great advice. But what principles should determine what we persist in and what we ought to resist? Marcus supplies that answer: reverence and justice. In other words, virtue.

What do my principles tell me about persisting and resisting?

Persist in love and resist hate. Persist in doing the things that bring me joy and resist the procrastinating, buffering activities that keep me hiding from the world and my responsibilities.

Business Burnout: Get Your Marketing Mojo Back

Business Burnout

It's hard to succeed when you're not motivated. It's hard to get motivated when you're burned out. This week, we talk about burnout, boundaries, and getting your mojo back in time for the last quarter of 2022.

Topics include:

  • What are the signs of burnout?
  • When you feel burned out, what happens to your boundaries?
  • How to get your mojo back

So come up with the ways that you can amplify your voice and your impact for these three to five priorities you have between now and the end of the year. What's the minimum it's going to take for that? — Jen

Are you sizzle or steak?

All sizzle and no steak means someone or something does not live up to its reputation, that someone or something is touted as being bigger, better, more important, more talented, or superior in some way but in reality, is not.

It’s a lot like being all talk and no action or a shallow person with surface-level relationships who do not show up when things get difficult.

Am I prepared for my bubble to burst?

We cannot rely too heavily on what has been, up to this point, normal. We have witnessed over the last two years that everything can shut down overnight. Events and flights cancel, jobs disappear, and family and friends get sick and die.

What then can we rely upon? Our values and ideals. When we choose our goals based on our values, we will always discover another way to achieve a value-based goal when we run into unexpected obstacles.

Inspirational Nugget:

Even one minute without playing the blame game is progress in the art of living.

Can I go a whole day without blaming others?

  • When I ask myself, why haven’t I done this yet? I find all kinds of excuses which is the same as blaming. Why haven’t I worked on the course I bought? Why haven’t I finished or implemented my own course or membership? When will I make the offer to join our membership? Why don’t I feel ready? Why isn’t somebody helping me with this? It all leads to excuses and blaming others and circumstances influenced by them.
  • It’s time to take full responsibility and answer the questions honestly. I haven’t done that work because I put it off. Because it feels hard. Because it requires making decisions that might be wrong and lead to losing time or money. When we sweep away all the excuses and blame and get down to the things that are truly holding us back, then we can take small steps to move forward past the fears that keep us stuck.

How to Expand Your Reach on Social Media with Effective Engagement

How to Expand Your Reach on Social Media with Effective Engagement

How do you increase your engagement and reach on social media in 2022?

Words of Wisdom

If you don't have time to post a lot, go comment on other people's posts. Go find people that are in your area or adjacent or people who might be your ideal client and watch what they post and then comment on it. It positions you as a thought leader if you are professional and you are sharing something of value to other people. It makes a tremendous difference because when you comment on other people's posts, you're expanding your reach beyond your own followers and you're opening the door for other people to find out about you and what it is that you do. — Jen

If you are trying to connect with somebody and they have a social media presence, go find out about them, instead of asking stupid questions that you could have just looked on their Facebook page or their LinkedIn page and found out for yourself. Instead of asking them those things, ask them deeper things that nobody asks them. — Shelley

Algorithms and the rented space and stuff like it could all change and those people could go away. It's not a list. You can't just pick up that list of people and say, now I'm going over here. But people who really want to engage with you, people who really want to learn from you, people who want to listen to you, they subscribe. Then wherever you go, they will continue to follow you. Topic Clusters: Fresh Ideas Based on Expertise
47:38

We’ve talked A LOT about researching content based on customer testimonials and basic keyword research. But if you want to know the SECRET to reach the right audience with your expertise, the solution is within YOU. This week’s show is all about creating topic clusters (AKA content themes) based on your expertise. You’ll find you have a goldmine within you. We’ll help you unlock the riches.

TRAINING: TOPIC CLUSTERS

E-A-T (Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness)

  • Why Google cares about your Expertise as a creator, the Authoritativeness of the content/information, and the Trustworthiness of your website.

YAMYL (Your Money or Your Life)

  • Use care in creating content in these areas:
  • News and current events (business, tech, science, etc.)
  • Government and law
  • Financial advice (investments, retirement)
  • Shopping information (product reviews, research)
  • Medical advice (drugs, hospitals, emergencies)
  • People (race, religion, sexuality)
  • … Yeah, we think it’s just about everything too. But Google doesn’t like it if your content is inaccurate and could do harm to another person.
  • Long story short: create good content based on the content funnel and topic clusters we talk about next and you should be OK.

Content Funnel

  • People search for different reasons:
  • Navigational
  • Informational
  • Transactional
  • Commercial
  • Create different types of content to capture people in different places within the funnel.

Topic Clusters

  • What are topic clusters?
  • Grouping content based on themes or a common broad topic, held together by a pillar post or skyscraper page
  • High-quality content representing different places within the funnel.

Chocolate Cake Example

  • We walk you through a topic cluster using chocolate cake as an example.

Service Providers – note

  • Use the problem, solution, results model if you’re a service provider struggling to come up with topics.

Create Video Script Templates to Increase Content Quality

Video Script Templates Make Your Life Easier

Creating a video series or podcast is a great way to build an audience, share your content and grow your business. However, creating good content takes time and effort, and good content starts with a good outline.

Drafting an outline, show flow, or script is an important step in creating a video series or podcast. It helps you create a plan and stick to it, while also keeping you focused on your point. In this episode, we talk about why scripting is important, what to put in it, how we use our show flow, and how to create video script templates for your own projects.

Here's what we discuss in this episode:

  • Why you need an outline, show flow, or video script template
  • Structured flexibility
  • The five buckets that make up our template (that you can adjust for yourself)

DIY Video Recording Studio: Essentials to Get Started

If you'd like to create videos to support your business, look no further. We'll cover the essentials to get your DIY video recording studio up and running, including options for a bare-bones budget, and the first upgrades to consider.

Shelley Carney and Toby Younis, livestreaming experts with their own in-home studios, host this episode. Jen McFarland is on vacation, living in a yurt without Wi-Fi.

We'll share the minimum livestreaming and video recording in-home studio set up including:

  • Internet Connection
  • Computer Hardware
  • “Studio” Equipment
  • Applications
  • What to Save For

Words of Wisdom

The minimum setup to get you started, but to still look professional, is a high-speed internet connection, computer hardware, studio equipment, the microphone and headset, and applications, which are going to help you to get online and do everything in a simple way.–Shelley Carney

The minimum requirements that you want are the ping. That's the signal that goes between you and your server provider to see how long it takes to ping one another. The minimum is 10 milliseconds, 10 or less. Five megabytes upload because live streaming is all about upload. If the service provides 10 that's great. Five megabytes download, but the more important of the two is the upload.–Toby Younis

Breaking News

If you want to start a podcast, consider a video-first podcast option. Cumulus Media and Signal Hill Insights revealed that 10% of survey respondents said they only ‘watched’ podcasts in the last week, and 60% of weekly consumers (audio and video) said they prefer podcasts with video.

Content Marketing to Support Your Goals

If you’re curious about content marketing, or specifically how content marketing connects to your business goals, you’re in the right place.

Learn why what you say, how you say it, and how often you repeat the message plays into every successful business.

  • How content marketing connects to your business goals
  • What are your business goals?
  • How can content marketing help you achieve those goals?
  • What you say, how you say it: aligned messaging
  • How often do you repeat the message: consistency

Words of Wisdom

Content marketing is the long game, so you want to have things along the way that you can celebrate. I think celebration and reflection are really important in this process. — Jen
Growing your audience means that you're likely to have more prospects within that growing audience who are interested in buying from you. And the more you can connect with that audience, the more loyal they become. The more likely they are to trust you enough to spend money with you. — Shelley

Words of Wisdom

Typically, when I talk about consistency, it's within the category of goals. But your content marketing should have goals attached to it. If you want to reach your goals, you have to find that thing that you like to do enough that you're going to do it consistently. — Jen
You need to define your audience. Who is your audience? For most of us, as content creators and entrepreneurs, our audience is people who are like us. They may be one or two steps behind us, but they're on the same path. — Shelley

Marketing Campaigns 101: 7 Winning Strategies
52:50

Summary: Marketing Campaigns 101

Creating content is great... but growing your audience (and influence) starts with marketing campaigns.

In other words, you have to let people know about your content, products, and services — not once, but over the course of time — to generate interest, build trust, and make sales. Marketing campaigns, when done right, check all the boxes.

This fun, interactive episode reviews marketing campaigns 101 and gives you all the nuts and bolts for how to successfully put together a marketing campaign to promote your online services and digital products.

We cover the 7 winning strategies behind successful marketing campaigns:

  1. Specific marketing goals (what outcome(s) would make this successful?)
  2. Marketing budget boundaries (how much time and money are you willing to spend?)
  3. Defining your target audience (hint: likely the same as your product/service audience)
  4. Selecting the right marketing channels
  5. Creating your campaign content calendar
  6. Use industry trends that lead to engagement
  7. Planning your campaign

We also recommend listening to the earlier episode, How to Launch your Ideas in 6 Weeks, with MissingLettr founder, Benjamin Dell.

Watch the show on YouTube.

Words of Wisdom

When we're talking about marketing campaigns, it really is about building a structure around your content for how you're going to get it out into the world. — Jen
Sometimes you have to try it several times to really get a feel of is this working for me? Live streaming, is that working for me? Are people going to show up? You can't do it one or two times and then say yes or no, it didn't work. You have to stick with that one for a while. But then there are bigger campaigns like launches and challenges and you have to say did I get close to my goal? Did I get enough ROI on this activity that I would do it again? Once you do find those things that really work well for you, then you can systemize and put them into your schedule.  — Shelley

Words of Wisdom

We just finished the first quarter of the year, If you keep track of that. We're at the beginning of the second quarter now. Do you need to adjust your goals? — Jen
We've been interviewing digital marketing experts, and we took quotes from the six people we have spoken with and found a theme. The theme was having authentic conversations within your content to attract an audience and to make them feel like they belong. Give them ownership of what your content is all about. We decided we need to have more conversations where we're giving people a chance to give us feedback and to talk about what they want to talk about. We looked at our marketing strategies. We said how could we make it better? — Shelley

Fight Information Overload and Start Marketing
47:39

Information Overload Episode Summary

In this inspirational and coaching episode, we'll talk about ways information overload can prevent small businesses from taking action, especially when it comes to marketing your business.

Learn how to narrow your focus and choose the best information, enabling you to make decisions while feeling less overwhelmed and overloaded in the process.

We believe clarity and focus will move you forward in your business journey.

We also discuss our own struggles at times and offer several tops so you can move past all of the marketing (mis)information and slide behind the driver's seat and start marketing with purpose and vigor.

Quick Quotes

When I first became an entrepreneur, I thought I had to do everything. That's one of the reasons why I talk about distractions and information overload a lot. I really felt it at a significant level when I first got started. I believed that business building was a sprint, not a marathon. If you believe that things are quick and that you're behind, it's a good time to take a step back and say, no, I'm not behind. It's that building a business is difficult, and it takes time and I need to be consistently marketing and showing up. - Jen

We pivoted last year. We started this new business, and we had come up with a design. It continues to evolve as you work through a perfecting process. You have to give yourself grace to say, I'm going to be learning. Even if you have done things similar in the past, each new thing requires that you work through it. So give yourself grace, understand that it's a learning process, and it's going to take time to perfect the process. - Shelley

At some point, I realized I needed to close my eyes and leap.

The momentum of that first leap led to a journey that led to a total life transformation. Challenges along the way included a painful divorce, navigating a co-parenting relationship, and starting a new business. It also included working with my own transformational coach, discovering how to truly believe in myself – and how to fall in love with my new life.

Throughout the adventure, I realized that "hard stuff" opened the door to awesome stuff. I learned that everything I wanted was just on the other side of uncomfortable. And believe me: I was uncomfortable. It took being extremely uncomfortable to fully embrace the process of change and to believe in the power of my future: To believe and trust in my power.

How to Build a Business Strategy Around Your Greatest Strengths in 2021
09:25

When we were sitting there, he looked at me and said, " Do I have to max out all of my credit cards to be successful?"

I was stunned by the stark honesty.

I paused for a minute and I said, "Absolutely not. You do not have to max out your cards to be successful."

Build a Business Strategy Episode Summary

Too often business leaders look to others to develop a business strategy.

It's critical to develop and build a business strategy correctly that plays to your (and your team's!) strengths not only because it's what will make you unique, but also because that's the repeatable process you're willing to follow through on over the long haul.

Regardless of how you're funded, it's likely there's something you're doing to attract your people (and that you love) you can build a strategy around.

Do that.

Business Analogy Stories: What does a Crow have to do with Business?
10:10

"We came up with a plan for how we're going to get the crow out. We open the doors and the crow's like, "Yeah, I don't really feel like coming out." How many times does this happen to you? You come up with a plan and then <poof!> back to the drawing board!" - Jen McFarland, Host

Episode Summary

How Women Teen Entrepreneurs Find Pandemic Silver Lining with Sarah Shapiro and Skye Loventhal
01:25:40

"I’m specifically passionate about combating educational inequalities.

Since we’re both daughters of educators, we saw firsthand how students were really struggling to adapt to distance learning because they no longer had the one-on-one support that they needed and all of their extracurriculars and summer plans were canceled.

Kids no longer had that outlet to pursue those other talents that they have, those other curiosities.

What we decided to do was create something called the Covid NineTEEN Project, and it’s a teen-run initiative where we have daily activities and one-on-one tutoring for kids." - Sarah Shapiro, Co-Founder

Episode Summary

The future is BRIGHT, my friends! Meet two women teen entrepreneurs who found a silver lining in the pandemic madness by creating a project to help hundreds of elementary students around the globe.

Sarah Shapiro and Skye Loventhal, the two women teen entrepreneurs started the Covid NineTEEN Project, which provides FREE teen-led activities and one-on-one tutoring meant to support elementary school students.

The Covid NineTEEN Project is a group of motivated teens who are using this valuable time to make a difference in the world.

They hope to serve as mentors for elementary school children to help them fill their time and continue to flourish despite the uncertainty of the outside world.

Top Consumer Behavior Changes And Great Impacts Since COVID-19
33:04

"50% of US consumers report that they’re buying the majority of their items online.

It’s not only an increase in online shopping. It means a broader range of products are being bought online.

They’ve also found that 76% of smartphone users are more likely to purchase from companies whose mobile sites or apps allow them to make purchases quickly. So if you have a smartphone, you’re more likely to go shopping on your smartphone and you’re more likely to get frustrated if the buying process is difficult.

You can no longer ignore having a mobile-friendly website, which is something I’ve been teaching for a long time. But now, you need to make the mobile e-commerce experience as quick and easy as possible. This is not going to change after COVID-19 is over." - Jen McFarland, Host

Consumer Behavior Episode Summary

We dive into the new normal. How have things changed since COVID-19 and what does that mean for your business? That’s right. We’re going to talk about consumer behavior since COVID-19, what we know right now and its implications for the future.

[Encore Presentation] The Mindset Shift that Released a Man from Prison with Brian Fowlie
57:51

"The footprint before prison was one that I couldn’t change, but I could change the footprint that I was leaving today.

It was like “This is what I got. What are you gonna do today? How are you gonna show up today?” A lot of times, we can get stuck in our past failures where we’re coming up short, or where it looks like we can’t go anymore, and it’s like “What am I gonna do today instead of being paralyzed by it?” - Brian Fowlie, Nonprofit Leader

Episode Summary

Are you in a self-created prison? Are you limiting your success? Jen interviews Brian Fowlie who learned meditation to free his mind while in prison, which ultimately helped him get released. Now he helps people break through the walls of limitation and develop personal empowerment.

Brian talks about how the prison system helped him see and breakthrough his limitations. You’ll also learn the business mindset benefits of meditation.

[Encore Presentation] How to Build Black Business Communities Equitably with Gerald Jones
50:49

I struggled to find my voice this week after the death of George Floyd. I've re-edited an interview from 2018 with Gerald Jones that ties together the history of black businesses, racism, sexism, and what we need to do to change the future.

"Everything is intersectional. Learn more about building black business communities.

I can’t speak to what it is to be a woman. But in a lot of cases, I just kind of wing it, and I substitute misogyny for racism and I substitute woman for black. But I use the exact same words of a thing that happened to me. And the heads start nodding. It’s like, “That happens to me all the time.” And I’m like, “And what do you think?” “Freaking sexism.” I’m like, “Exactly. That’s also how racism works.” Power treats the disadvantaged in very similar ways. We just call it different things." - Gerald Jones, Coach

Building Black Business Communities Episode Summary

Leader, coach, speaker, and training facilitator Gerald Jones, host of the Buy Black Podcast | The Voice of Black Business, shares how the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile lead to his podcast, creating economic resources for black business communities, and the importance of creating a broader community so we can all rise together. So many insights your head might just explode.

What is Crisis Marketing with Jeremy Miller (Marketing During COVID and other Crises)
57:27

We discuss crisis marketing with brand strategist and bestselling author, Jeremy Miller.

We visit about how the 2008 financial crisis reshaped and grew his family's recruiting business, and how it's helped him guide businesses through today's crises.

If you'd like to learn more about how to adapt your business to the current health and financial crisis and the best ways to market your business during this crisis, you are in the right place.

You'll learn how:

  • Jeremy grew is family's recruiting business during the 2008 Great Recession
  • Important it is to be helpful (and check your ego) right now
  • Critical it is to create and launch products quickly
  • Business owners choose between closing, hibernating and innovating during this crisis
  • To market your products without being icky

About Jeremy Miller

Jeremy Miller is a brand strategist and bestselling author. His blend of humor, stories, and actionable ideas will inspire you to innovate and grow your business and brand.

Jeremy’s path into branding wasn’t traditional. He fell into it out of necessity. After watching his family’s business nearly hit rock bottom, he was forced to take a hard look at the way the company was run and at their industry as a whole. Jeremy realized it wasn’t his sales people or marketing processes that were failing, it was the brand: their customers couldn’t distinguish them from anyone else. This insight caused him to rethink, reposition, and rebrand the business. The strategy worked, and within a year the company turned the corner and rocketed into growth mode. And in 2013 Jeremy sold his family’s business to focus exclusively on what he does today: build brands.

It was this experience that compelled Jeremy to embark on a decade-long study of how companies grow recognizable, memorable brands. He and the Sticky Branding team have profiled and interviewed hundreds of companies across dozens of industries to uncover how companies grow Sticky Brands.

Jeremy’s first book, Sticky Branding, is a branding playbook for how small- and mid-sized companies challenge the giants of their industry to grow their brands. It was a #1 Globe and Mail Bestseller. His next book is called, Brand New Name. It launches in October! The book provides a proven, step-by-step process to create an unforgettable name. It shows you how to name anything — a brand, company, product, service, or ideas — by unlocking the creative genius of teams.

How to Rethink Brand Strategy For the Best Competitive Advantage
36:43

Branding is often one of the most misunderstood topics among small local businesses. On this week's show, I talk about what branding is, what branding isn't, and why it's so important to get it right.

When you think of Apple do you think of a logo with a bite out of an apple? Nah. You probably have opinions about Apple based on whether you use an iPhone or an Android, whether you're a Mac or PC user.

And yet, when I talk to local small business owners when I ask about their brand, the conversation goes straight to logo design, website, and social media.

Equity Corner: Slavery is a thing. In fact, it's THE THING that caused the Civil War

Don't let anyone tell you the Civil War was a 'states' rights' issue.

The Civil War was fought over slavery. Period. Any other explanation is a whitewashing of the facts.

Here's a quote from Alexander Stephens, Vice President of the Confederacy:

“Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner- stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition.” - Alexander Stephens, The Corner-Stone Speech, 1861 (https://dontknowmuch.com/2017/11/slavery-was-the-corner-stone-civil-war-primary-documents/)

This disgusting speech leaves little doubt that the Civil War was about slavery, first and foremost.

We've got some work to do. As Senta said, schools teach it as a states' rights issue. And unfortunately, it's working. According to the Pew Research Center, more people think the main cause of the Civil War is states' rights - 48% - rather than slavery - 38%. (http://www.people-press.org/2011/04/08/civil-war-at-150-still-relevant-still-divisive/)

Digital Trade-offs, You Are a Gift & Origins Of Grandfathered In
01:03:10

This week talk about the true costs and benefits of all of these digital tools that we use. I call it digital trade-offs. Are you getting just as much out of your screen time as you’re putting in? In the second segment, we talk about how sometimes the biggest gift, is you. And finally, we’re introducing a new segment called equity corner. Because it’s time for white folks to start having honest conversations about race.

Segment One: Screen Time & Digital Trade-Offs

I’m suggesting that the entire model for social media is meant to distract and to annoy and to make you check how many likes you have.

How much support are you getting from this digital community? Is it connecting you in any sort of meaningful way?

If you’re using social media for your business it’s important to know it’s pay to play. You’re renting space from social media landlords who rent space to large corporations who can pay a lot of money. It takes a special kind of magic to be going viral on social media anymore.

So the questions I have are:

Is your digital life operating in a supportive model meaning is it supporting your goals

Is it supporting your core key work?

Or is your digital life operating in a servant model, meaning, are you serving the digital beast?

Freedom distraction-free app: https://freedom.refersion.com/c/576cdd

Boomerang for Gmail: https://www.boomeranggmail.com/

Segment Two: You Are A Gift

When we realize and recognize each other’s talents and treasures something extraordinary happens.

It’s also important to remember the gifts we have within ourselves.

That’s part of what makes us all a gift to one another is that ability to see a friend who’s struggling or to recognize the struggle within ourselves and pull ourselves back and help our friends excel and be the best that they can be because it makes us all greater. And sometimes it’s just seeing what a gift we are.

Segment Three: Grandfathered In

This week we’re introducing a new segment to the show called Equity Corner. What’s Equity Corner?

It’s intended to raise awareness around the issues of the day including words and phrases we might think twice before using.

It’s a look at not only current events, but also history, so we can consider the unintended consequences and harm our words cause, including whether it’s a history we want to repeat.

This week we look at the phrase “grandfathered in.”

We talk about the government shutdown, and real-life examples of how it's affecting people who work for the federal government - and people who don't. About Lucia Pavone

Lucia Pavone is an international speaker, instructor of the art of sensuality, with an emphasis on full body orgasm. Lucia is a pleasure instigator. She supports those who identify as women to connect to their sensuality, love the body they are in and have a sex life worth bragging about.

Her journey of sexual emancipation began over 16 years ago when she took her first sensuality course. Quickly realizing the pursuit of pleasure was her calling, she became a dedicated researcher of communication, relationships and sensuality. Busting through the limitations put on a woman’s orgasm, she’s experienced over 6,000 hours of Deliberate Embodied Orgasm (full body, extended orgasm).

For the past 2 years, she’s hosted a weekly livestream on OSchool, a pleasure based sex education website, as seen in Forbes, Huffington Post, Glamour and recently went viral on NOW THIS.

This is Why Women Must Advocate for What They Need with Melissa Bird [Explicit]
01:37:08

For the first 40 episodes, we’ve spent a lot of time talking about different trends, tactics, and methods for improving your business.

You might say we’ve worked together on your business.

This episode kicks off our women’s series. It’s an acknowledgment that we are complex human beings. And there are so many different ways we can be stuck.

We are not defined by our businesses; nor can we control outside forces. It’s also impossible to lead a siloed existence where our actions are governed by our business.

Basically, we’re not robots.

Today we talk about the importance of advocating for what you need. We talk about it through a progressive lens, but the message is clear that all women need a seat at the table regardless of race, politics or sexual orientation.

So sit back, relax, and kick off 2019 with a couple of blue girls from rural red states who talk about overcoming fear, imperfect advocacy, standing up for truth and equity, being vulnerable, and the importance of communication.

About Melissa Bird

As a writer, professor, life coach, and fiery public speaker, Dr. Melissa Bird creates the genesis for a new brand of leadership.

When she’s not building her public speaking Empire, she can be found reading trashy novels, drinking fine whiskey, playing mom to three delicious humans, and loving her punk rock scientist James Thomas Kelly.

How to Release Yourself from Limitations with Brian Fowlie [Explicit]

Jen interviews Brian Fowlie and talks about how the prison system helped him see and break through his limitations. You’ll also learn the business mindset benefits of meditation.

Things We Mention

The Prophet, by Khalil Gibran - https://www.amazon.com/Prophet-Kahlil-Gibran/

Man’s Search for Meaning, by Viktor Frankel - https://www.amazon.com/Mans-Search-Meaning-Viktor-Frankl/

Close Your Eyes, Open Your Mind: a Practical Guide to Spiritual Meditation - https://www.amazon.com/Close-Your-Eyes-Open-Mind/

About Brian Fowlie

Brian Fowlie left home at 14 years old, becoming a homeless youth. Brian experienced drug and alcohol abuse combined with violence on the streets and soon became part of the juvenile justice system. By the time Brian was 21 years old, he had earned himself a 17-year to life sentence in California’s Department of Corrections. He walked into San Quentin fully expecting to die a convict death.

Brian did not get better in prison, he got worse. He spent the first 9 years building a reputation based on violence, volatility, and prison credibility in order to build what he believed to be walls of protection, keeping him safe and helping him survive in prison.

In 1997 a couple of significant events took place that combined to create the desire for change.

Brian realized that he was miserable and put into action a program that led him to accountability, personal empowerment, spiritual devotion, and uplifting his fellow convicts.

The prison was his home; he was going to live out the rest of his life there and die there, so he set out on a daily path of creating a different culture than the one that had himself and his friends miserable, depressed, self-loathing, and hopeless. He set out to change his view of his world, choosing to practice living each day with personal accountability, love, hope, possibility, inclusion, and peace of mind.

Brian was granted parole by the California Board of Parole Hearings and was released after serving more than 22 years in prison. He was 21 when he committed his crime and he was 43 years old when he walked back out of State prison.

Soon after his release, Brian took a minimum wage job. He was stoked because $8.00 an hour was a huge raise from his prison job, which paid pennies. He continued to strive, finding a better paying job later that year and has continued to progress into a journeyman inside wireman electrician, a trade that he learned in prison.

Brian earned his Bachelor’s of Science in Criminal Justice Administration with a Human Services Focus. He has continued with his graduate studies working toward a Master’s Degree in Peacemaking and Conflict Studies.

While working to provide for his family, going to school to further his education, Brian has also stayed busy serving his community by working with at-risk-youths, Keynote Speaker for the California Coalition for Youth Taking Action Conference 2012, and has even gone back into two prisons and a county jail to work with the prisoners he left behind, sharing his story, successes and challenges he has faced through his transition from a “Lifer” in prison to a citizen and community member in good standing.

The future is bright and the ride continues. As Brian says, “God’s got it, so buckle up”. Come key in on the details, tap into the success techniques, develop the mindset to overcome any obstacle, be it physical prisons or the prisons of your mind that hold you back. The energy is contagious, the movement is inevitable, change is not only possible, but it’s coming…open up to it and invite it...
