Episode 033: How To Take Control of Your Hormonal Health Beyond the Pill with Dr. Jolene Brighten

In case you haven’t noticed, this show has had EXCLUSIVELY female guests for the 8 months of its existence, but this week, we are taking girl talk to another level because we are talking ALL things hormonal health, periods, and birth control. Think of this episode as a super empowering, mind-blowing upgrade in place of what high school health class SHOULD have taught you. I sat down with the incredible, Dr. Jolene Brighten, who is a Functional Medicine Naturopathic Medical Doctor and the founder of Rubus Health, a women’s medicine clinic that specializes in women's hormones. She is recognized as a leading expert in Post-Birth Control Syndrome and the long-term side effects associated with hormonal contraceptives. Dr. Brighten is the best selling author, speaker and regular contributor to several online publications and health apps.

I’m SO grateful for the work Dr. Brighten is doing in women’s health and she has SO much knowledge to share in this episode. We talked all about:

- Women's experience with traditional, western medicine

- How we can feel more empowered and in control of our health

- The basics of the menstrual cycle and why it’s NOT that complicated

- The nitty gritty of hormonal birth control and the need-to-knows for before, during, and after using hormonal contraceptives.

If you’re a woman… you NEED to know this stuff, and I’m so happy that you’re here. If you’re not a woman, then this episode will give you a whole new respect for the female body… so buckle up (:

Episode 032: The Best Diet for 2019 with Registered Dietitian, Kara Corey

With it being mid January right now, New Year’s resolutions are either going strong, or starting to fizzle out no matter how GOOD our intentions were. The other day, I was reading an artcile about New Year’s resolutions and they had polled over a 1000 people… among that sample, almost HALF of them had diet resolutions, with the top approaches being low carb, basic calorie restriction (which could include just eating healthier), keto, and low-fat. As a wellness coach, I DEFINITELY have my own opinions about all of those approaches, cough cough especially keto, but I wanted to bring on someone even more specialized to chat about diets, nutrition, and how they fit into a healthy lifestyle this week, so I brought on a registered dietitian, and WNBF bikini pro, Kara Corey! Kara really specializes in providing science-based, accurate nutrition information for the fitness community, and she does so through her YouTube channel, Kara Corey Fit Life, where she has a dietitian talk series, documents her competition preps, and shares tons of healthy recipes and lifestyle tips. She has over 100k subscribers, and for good reason, because Kara truly knows her stuff! So in this interview, Kara and I covered a TON of topics, but the standouts to me were: breaking down where to start if you’re overwhelmed with nutrition, how to make healthy eating a truly enjoyable lifestyle, and how we can pursue physical health AND mental health at the same time.

SHOW NOTES:

FOLLOW MARIE:

FOLLOW KARA:

Episode 025: How To Achieve Food Freedom + Actually Enjoy the Holidays with Jessi Jean
For my Americans listening, this week’s show is just in time for one of my personal favorite holidays, THANKSGIVING. Obviously since this is the grind & be GRATEFUL podcast, gratitude is super important and I love that it’s so central during this time of year. Sometimes the magic of the holiday season can be overshadowed by our own personal struggles though, particularly around food and exercise. Sometimes we get SO wrapped up in our diet or exercise plan that we lose sight of that magic-- food and body concerns take your focus off of being present, enjoying your loved ones, enjoying the celebrations and the food, and if you are currently like “holy crap, this is me” right now-- if you have spent past holidays worried about eating the right things, or not eating too much, or working off your food-- then this episode is for you. I sat down with my friend Jessi Jean, who is a certified eating psychology and she helps women evolve their relationship with food, ditch dieting, and reclaim their health and happiness in ALL areas in life. And not only is Jessi incredibly knowledgeable and has the credentials to back it up, she has also personally overcome massive struggles with eating disorders, body image, exercise, and self-worth. She is living proof that there is SO much life and freedom on the other side of our struggles with food and body, and I’m really excited for you to hear from her, especially her wisdom and strategies for approaching the holiday season in a balanced, healthy way where stress food and exercise DOESN’T cloud the experience. This conversation really couldn’t have come at a better time! We also chat about the pros and cons of flexible dieting, the best way to manifest your goals that ACTUALLY works, and how to measure progress without using the scale. You're gonna love this one! Episode 024: How To Discover Your Truth and Define Your Destiny with Valentina Esteban
You are in for a super soulful, life-giving conversation today! I sat down with my longtime friend, Valentina Esteban, to talk allllll about her journey of uncovering her truth, and how you can do the same. Val is truly one of the coolest people I know. She has a background as Canada’s youngest professional bikini competitor-- she rose through the competitive bodybuilding ranks at a very young age and was on track to have a super successful career in fitness, until she decided that it just wasn’t for her and literally walked away from everything she had built because she realized that it wasn’t her TRUTH. She has had some crazy cool experiences while traveling the world which we’ll talk about in the episode, and she has some really amazing insights on how we can all cultivate stillness and truth in our own lives. You will literally feel like you just stood in the sunshine after hearing Val speak, and I’m so excited for you to get to know her! SHOW NOTES: FOLLOW THE SHOW: FOLLOW MARIE: FOLLOW VALENTINA:

Episode 023: How To Befriend Your Body + Thrive Under Pressure with Victoria Garrick
I know that you are going to relate to today’s guest SO MUCH, and not because you’re an elite athlete like her, but because you’ve probably dealt with, or are dealing with a lot of the same internal battles that she has. Today, we’re hanging out with Victoria Garrick, who is a senior volleyball star at The University of Southern California. Not only is she is a four-year division I starter, team captain, two-time NCAA elite eight contender, and 2015 PAC-12 champion-- aka a total badass on the court, she is also an advocate for mental health and body image struggles in athletes and young women all over the world. Through her own struggles with depression, disordered eating, and body image, she has learned how to rise up and reach her goals no matter what it takes. Victoria is even a TEDx speaker, and her talk “Athletes and Mental Health: The Hidden Opponent” has led to tons of media exposure and opportunities for her to shed light on the internal battles that many athletes, and actually young adults in general, are facing. Whether you are an elite athlete or just workout for fun, I know that you’ll relate so much to Victoria’s stories and wisdom around chasing goals, perseverance, overcoming bad body image, and picking yourself up when it feels like the weight of the world is on your shoulders. Episode 022: 10 Healthy Habits that Changed My Life + a Special Announcement with Marie Wold
Normally, I wouldn’t do two solo shows in a row-- it just doesn’t sit well with my perfectionist tendencies, BUT I’m making an exception and shuffling some things around because I have something REALLY exciting to tell you about this week. But before we get to the really exciting announcement, I wanna fill you in on what this episode is about and that is HEALTHY HABITS. As you probably know, habits are the foundation of wellness because when motivation fades, habits and discipline will be what keep you chugging along. But the tricky thing with habits is that it always feels like BAD habits are SO easy to fall into, and GOOD habits are SO hard to establish-- can you relate?! For me, one of the most helpful things when it comes to creating those healthy habits is to really get clear on the IMPACT it’s going to have. I’m the type of person where if there isn’t a clear, logical reason for doing something, I’m absolutely NOT going to be motivated to do it. So today I’m going to share with you 10 healthy habits that have literally changed my LIFE, AND explain the impact that they’ve had so that you can decide whether or not each habit is something you want to pursue and if you do, you can do so with clarity and confidence that it’s with your best interest in mind and at heart. Episode 021: The 5 Hardest Lessons My Fitness Journey Has Taught Me with Marie Wold
Today it’s just you and me for another SOLO SHOW! I recently polled my instagram followers about what type of content and topics you guys would want to see and lots of you said you wanted more solo shows, so your wish is my command.. PLUS they’re really fun for me too! Today we are talking about the top 5 things that I’ve learned on my fitness and let me tell you… most of these were learned the HARD way. I started my fitness journey about 8 years ago and I did EVERYTHING wrong in the beginning and basically made things way harder than they needed to be for YEARS. I saw the light eventually, have learned SO much, and now I’m a successful coach and everything, but I would have saved so much time and frustration if I would've understood these 5 lessons sooner. Obviously I can’t go back in time yet, BUT hopefully by sharing these lessons with you, you’ll get to skip over a little bit of that struggle that I went through. PLUS the sooner you can learn and apply these lessons to fitness, the sooner you can apply them to the rest of your life too. Because while I am talking about these in the context of health and fitness, they can all be directly applied to ANY other area of life as well, and that’s one of the reasons why health/fitness/wellness are foundational topics of this show-- they really translate into every other area of life and are a catalyst for growth. Episode 020: How To Eat MORE and Lose Weight with Laura Schoenfeld, RD
Today’s episode is SO relevant because with Andrew and my’s 8-week fall fitness challenge, we are getting SO many messages and comments in our facebook group saying “I CAN’T BELIEVE I’M EATING THIS MUCH AND STILL LOSING WEIGHT” and then, before we started the challenge and everyone was just getting their plans, we had multiple panicked messages asking us if we made a typo or if we were sure the numbers were right because some people’s recommended fat loss calories were HIGHER than they were used to eating but they weren’t even seeing progress with them. It might sound like some magic fantasy world, but this phenomenon is VERY REAL and as a coach, I see this ALL of the time. Women are chronically under-eating, sometimes for decades, and it’s not doing anyone any favors. So we’re going to set the record straight in today’s episode with the help of my guest, Laura Schoenfeld. Laura is a Registered Dietitian with her own private practice. She specializes in helping overstressed, overtrained, and undernourished women get back to better physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. By combining evidence-based functional nutrition training with spirituality and self-compassion, she help’s her clients reach their highest level of real health and wellness with the overall of becoming fed and fearless!
Today we are getting alll of our facts straight about PERIODS and BIRTH CONTROL. You guys have been asking for an episode around these topics for a while now, and I found just the gal for the job-- today’s guest, Nicole Jardim, really delivered the goods. She is known as “The Period Girl”, not even kidding, and she is INSANELY knowledgeable about all things periods, hormones, birth control-- all of those fun girly things that we all experience all the time. But here’s the thing-- in our society, we are conditioned to dread our periods, blame our hormones, and basically fight against our bodies, and Nicole is here to set things straight and show us how AMAZING and COOL the female body is-- you will finish this episode with a new-found love and respect for that body of yours, I can promise you that. Nicole is also going to break down common period problems, reasons why we experience period problems in the first place, the crazy drug that we call birth control ,and more-- and as much as we tend to shy away from these topics, as women, this is all stuff that we NEED to know. We have to be our own advocates and we have to be empowered to take charge of our own health. She’s a Certified Women’s Health + Functional Nutrition Coach with a specialty in hormonal and reproductive health and has completed a TON of education in women’s health-- she know’s her shit, and you’re gonna see what I mean when we get into the episode. Episode 016: Marie's Lessons on Self-Love + How To Pursue Health & Fitness without Going Crazy

Today it’s just you and me and we’re doing one of my favorite things-- a Q&A! I’ll admit it-- this show, in general, is partially a selfish endeavor-- I just LOVE having an excuse to sit down with awesome guests and pick their brains as if we’re two friends grabbing coffee. And I obviously hope that you have the same questions and interests as I do, but ya never know, right? So TODAY, I want to make absolutely sure that I’m answering the questions that YOU care about. I put up a few question boxes on my Instagram story this week-- LOVE that feature, and I asked you guys for your business, fitness / wellness, and personal questions and boy, did we get some good ones! So I’m going to go ahead and split those topics into 3 DIFFERENT episodes and today we’re going to focus on a specific genre that I got a LOT of questions about, and that’s confidence, body-image, and I guess just balance with pursuing health and fitness goals and OH MAN do I have a lot of experience with this stuff, so I’m excited to dive in! And I’m not just excited because I have a lot to ramble on about-- I do love a good ramble-- but I’m more excited that I have a platform to speak about issues that SOOO many women experience. So if you struggle with these things-- confidence, body image, self love-- all of that deep shit-- you are not alone, not even a little bit.
