My Life, My Love, My Way w/ Lisa Cunningham
01:01:57

Lisa Cunningham is a dope producer, significant influencer, was there during the infancy of Atlanta hip hop...She is also a lesbian woman who is optimistic about the future of black folks and the LGBTQIA community.  These are the reasons the we sought her out - we wanted to sit down and learn how to be the best ally possible to the LGBTQIA community.  If we are honest we as black people want strong allies and i think that creates the responsibility for us to also be strong allies.

By now you should know how we roll on While Black which means if it involves black folks and we can teach you more about it then you should expect it from us.

So sit back, open your ears and your mind and learn something about the LGBTQIA community - you may find that it makes you a better person in general.

The Amber Guyger Trial & Castle Doctrine (RIP Bothem Jean)
01:09:28

White Dallas Police Officer Amber Guyger was convicted and sentenced to 10 years for the murder of Botham Jean.

This episode is far from our normal format - we skip all of our normal upfront banter (No While Black Isht - No Dope Quotes) instead we head straight into the details and break down the Amber Guyger Trial for you.  We brought back Criminal Defense attorney Ecleynne Mercy (IG: MercyLaw_GA) and Criminal Defense attorney and Former Federal Agent Mac (twitter: Macspeakslegal) along side marketing expert T Adeola (Twitter: @stemwhisperers & @tembo8482) to break down this case, the sentence, the optics, and the impact on our culture at large.

BTW Allowing Castle Doctrine into the case was a smart strategy - listen to learn more about why!

If you followed this case at all and care about understanding the details as well as how this case will impact you then you MUST tune in and listen.

Black Parenting Is The Toughest Job In The World
01:10:36

There is no job more tough or rewarding than raising up a black child in the world today. Everywhere you look there are threats old and new, issues, concerns, and a general lack of understanding of who we are and who our children are.

In todays episode of While Black we sit back and chat with a panel of “expert” parents each with a child in a different life stage with very different upbringings and environments.  We have a few laughs and let of a little steam while we talk about all the areas that a parent has to consider while raising a child.

  • How to keep our children safe from police?
  • Is the public school system set up to truly educate our black children?
  • As our children create relationships how would you feel if they chose a white mate?
  • Should our children have to code switch?

We also laugh and discuss the price of melanin on the open market and whether or not you really need to wash your chicken.

Tell us what you think of this episode

"Black Women Are Superheroes" - The State of Black Women Today
01:04:00

Have you checked on the black women in your life?  If you are a black woman how much time do you spend on YOU?  Today we are joined by the amazing Dr Joy Bradford from the platform and podcast Therapy For Black Girls and she talks specifically to and about black women today.

Dr Joy hits home on point after point as it relates to the mental health of black women and she helps us to understand what we can do personally to be better help mates to black women. She also scares us a little with her private message to all women “IT’S TIME” …. As she said it we couldn't help but hear Beyonce’s “Bow Down” and “Girls Run The World” playing in the back of our minds.  But nonetheless, Bow down to the black women in our lives we will gladly do!

Just say no is a theme you will hear throughout this episode and we concur that it is severely needed.  After all black women have been the heroes to the human race so we need them well taken care of until the rest of us get our ISHT together.

BTW do you know where the fictional Hillman college was located?

This episode is a HUGE thank you and we love you to all black women (Love you Wife, Mom, Mother in law, Sister and sister in law...This one is for each of you!)

High School Sex - The High Cost of A 2 Year Age Gap w/Genarlow Wilson
01:07:34

PARENTS OF YOUNG BLACK MEN AND WOMEN PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THIS ONE

While Black sat down with Mr. Genarlow Wilson who several years ago was charged with kidnapping, rape, aggravated sodomy, and convicted of aggravated child molestation after a consensual sexual act occurred at a New Years Eve Party.  He was a 17 year old high school student and she was a 15 year old classmate. Today Genarlow is out of prison, a graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta GA, and giving back so that our children don’t end up following in his footsteps.

There isn't much more we can say here other than jump in and and hear the details. Afterwards we recommend you sit down and have a conversation with your teen about intersexual respect, sexting, and teen relationships.  Go have the difficult conversation before you end up dealing with something so much more difficult.

Dream Achieving w/Brya Wood ... While Black - Baby, I'm A Star
01:13:45

If you can dream it you can achieve it is much more than just a popular phrase especially when you are Brya Wood.  Brya is one of the most sought after hip hop dancers in the country. She has danced for the biggest talent on the stage (Janet Jackson, Snoop Dogg, Stevie Wonder, Missy, Pharrell….) and starred in a few dope tv and film roles.  We are blessed that she was kind enough to swing by and spend some time with While Black.

Brya inspires us all on how to go from where you are to where you want to be and how to gracefully do it your own way.  She drops gem after gem about believing in yourself and recognizing your own power. Plus we get her take on twerk videos ...are the good for the culture or bad for the culture.

Brya makes it plain that giving up isn't in her vocabulary and it shouldn't be in your either. If you have ever dreamed but have not yet realized that dream then you have to listen to her break it all the way down.

Brya was dope, lively, and one of our favorite guests...her authenticity pours all over this episode.

“Stay Woke” w Justin Blu - Enlightened … While Black

Staying woke is more work than woke.  Digging in and forming your own perspective is not an easy thing.  The world is noisy and most of it comes from those who who would have you picking cotton rather than picking homes on their block.   How do you re-educate yourself when the country is vested in your miseducation? How do you trust yourself when the country says you aren't trustworthy?

Today While Black sits down with Justin Blu and dives into a great conversation on getting woke and staying woke while black.  Justin breaks down so much in this episode including was segregation a civil right or a civil wrong, why we MUST pay attention to the treatment of other ethnicities, and what black people need more than anything.

If you ain't first, you're last w/Bill Lester - NASCAR … While Black
01:06:19

We get some dope guests on While Black and today's guest stays the trend..this brother was literally on Honey Nut Cheerios cereal boxes.  Now real talk how many folks do you personally that have been on a damn box of cereal? (I'll Wait)

While Black had the chance to sit down with NASCAR  pioneer and living legend Bill Lester.

Bill wanted to drive fast since his teen years and finally by age 40 made it to the nation's biggest racing stage. Our conversation today leans in hard on how to find your way to your dreams even when the thing you are dreaming about isn't necessarily accepting of who you are.  Bill discusses how powerful the support of a black woman can be and calls out his wife specifically for pushing and pulling him to get out there and make his dreams come true. (Pro tip: Black Woman are indeed magic)

He also goes in depth on being black and educated in NASCAR shining light on both the amazing times and struggles that being a black race car driver created.

Bill is a member of a VERY small group of African Americas to participate in the sport of NASCAR.  His story is both black history and a reminder of what black future can look like - we can do anything, be anywhere, and accomplish everything!!!!

This is not only a good episode but it holds true to the While Black promise of exposing you to new perceptions and experiences.

Enjoy this episode and make sure to go engage with Bill at www.billlester.com

Pirouettes, Twerks, & Werk w/Juel Lane - Dancing ... While Black
01:09:50

Twerk, Millie Rock, The Cabbage patch, The Dougie, The Electric Slide, Flossing, Breaking, The Moonwalk, Ballet  …… Dance (Oh we do that) is rich in our history and culture. It has been a partner to our community for as long as we have been black and today we are blessed to chat with one of Dance Magazines Top 25 Dancers to Watch - Mr Juel D Lane.

We discuss being a black career dancer, the importance of the older and newer dances, and how black people have left their mark on the industry. Are we fully recognized the way we should be and what's next for black dancers?  Also how do we as black people enjoy our right to be angry while not feeding into the the angry black (Fill in the blank) stereotypes that exist … When can we live in our feeling and our moment without the burden of teaching falling at our footsteps?

Our While Black Isht today is about the all time best dance scene in a black classic or “hood” movie, Did OJ do it, and What do you love most about life while black?

After you listen make sure to check out Ailey II Choreographer, Camille A Brown dancer and Celebrations of Dance Choreographer of the year Mr Juel Lane at www.Jueldlane.com or catch him on IG @jueldlane

Black Proud and Republican - Republican ... While Black
01:12:36

When you hear that someone is a black republican what is the first thought that you have.  We polled a few people and the answers didn't surprise me..

Entitled

Sellout

Bougie

Detached

Wealthy

Regardless as to if you agree or disagree with the words used to describe black Republicans I'd like to pose the question are those words fair?  Is it fair to judge someone simply because of a political affiliation?

We are of the mindset that if we as black folks are to change our situation and rewrite the accepted narrative on us we will need all of us regardless of income, education, or party affiliation. We need the power of diversity represented by the full spectrum of black people.

So as you listen to our black Republican guest Takosha Swan and whether you agree or disagree consider where we can find common ground to go out and win...together!

As with any conversation there were points made by Takosha that While Black disagreed with but there were also some that we agreed with.

This episode will help you learn a different mindset as well as how to partner with someone that you may disagree with.

Lastly please remember that While Black is a forum meant to bring black people together and discuss our struggles, similarities, and differences..this isn't Fox or CNN and there will NEVER be fighting between blacks folks on this show

Hoodwinked, Bamboozled, Led Astray, Run Amok - Enslaved ... While Black
01:12:21

What would you ask the family who enslaved your ancestors?  Could you listen to them, forgive them...love them? Would you be sympathetic to their plight and misguided actions?

These are some of the topics that we touch on today as we sit down with Diana Roman, a descendant of the Hairston family...one of the largest slave owning families in American history.  Over the course of their dominance they owned and managed 43 plantations accounting for over 10,000 enslaved Africans.

Diana is eager to redirect her legacy from the atrocities of slavery to possibilities of genealogical reconnection.  Her family has complete an intact record for every person they enslaved and are working with the other large historical slave holding families and the mormon to church to provide these records….answering genealogical questions for millions.

1 in 5 suffer - Mental Illness ... While Black
01:12:04

THIS IS A MUST LISTEN TO EPISODE

How many times growing up did we see our uncle who was always drunk or our aunt who was known to have conversations with herself. How many times did you hear that someone was getting a crazy check and how often were you told just to be careful around that certain family member. Mental illness affects so many of us that it has become normalized. So much that we often don't recognize it and often dont get treatment.

1 in 5 US adults suffer from mental illness and 1 in 16 suffer from major mental illness. Today we sit down with Dr Harrison Davis to dive into mental illness in the black community. We learn what mental illness can look like and how we can better take care of those around us who suffer from it.  We also learn how to increase our chances of surviving a police interaction when in the middle of a mental health crisis.

For more information on Mental Illness please visit The national alliance on mental illness (NAMI.ORG)

Code-switching...While Black
01:08:48

Code-switching is real, it’s necessary, and its draining as hell!

We’ve all felt that internal rage while in public and fought to keep our “inner n-word” in check.  We’ve all called that friend at work and heard them greet us in their “white” voice and if we are honest we all have our own “white” voice.  All brown and black people code switch - so now lets have a real conversation about it!

Listen to Diversity and Inclusion Expert Melanie Calhoun lead us through an entertaining, informative, and funny conversation about why we code switch, the future of code switching, and some awkwardly sad examples of code switching.  We discuss Obama as the Code Switch king especially when Kevin Durant is around and learn how poor Gary was put in an impossible situation on the corporate dance floor. We also rap about the fact the the new movie “Sorry To Bother You” is all about code switching.  Her stories will sound so familiar you may think they are yours.

On today's episode we have a funny and lighthearted convo on black tv.

What makes a black tv actually a black tv show?

What TV moved and shaped us the most?

What television shows do we think impacted the culture the most.

Policing While Black
01:10:44

Policing While Black

STRAIGHT FIRE!!!.  The only way to describe this episode.

Art and Vince sit down with Mac, a long time law enforcement officer turned Atlanta attorney.  We get his perspective on everything from how he feels about the relationship between black folks and police all the way to the advice he, as a LEO (Law Enforcement Officer) gives to his own children, as well his thoughts on the solution.

Mac makes sense out of why more officers don't cross the blue wall of silence to speak out regarding what's happening to black lives at the hands of cops and also sheds a little light on our responsibility in the matter.

Educate, Advocate, and Engage is Macs 3 pronged approach to overcoming the task at hand

We also hear a Langston Hughes piece about black folks and police that was written in 1946 but sounds like it was written yesterday
