Description

We get it. Being a mom is full-on and full-time. Equal parts FUN and WTF. Our kids don’t come with instructions, and it’s ok if we don’t have all the answers. We’ll figure it out together. The best advice comes from our favorite experts and doctors, trusted mom friends, and learning on the job. Get your coffee — or wine! — and tune in to hear us spill it all. We got this. This is MOM BRAIN with Hilaria Baldwin and Daphne Oz.

Episode Date
"Let's Talk About Sex Bay-Bee" With Dr. Lea Lis
00:59:22

If you're dreading the day you have to have "the sex talk" with your kids, this is the episode for you. We talked with Dr. Lea Lis (a.k.a “The Shameless Psychiatrist”) all about getting into the birds and the bees with our kids. She's a double board-certified Adult and Child Psychiatrist and an Assistant Clinical Professor at New York Medical College, who's active in the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Lis dives right in and nothing is taboo to her. She literally wrote the book on talking to your kids about sex and it's called, No Shame: Real Talk With Your Kids About Sex, Self-Confidence, and Healthy Relationships.

In this episode, Dr. Lis tells Hilaria and Daphne to be honest, open and unashamed when approaching our kids about sex and their bodies. If we have reservations, our kids will too. She discusses how sex is addressed differently between cultures, whether it's in Europe or the U.S. and there are many approaches. Dr. Lis' opinion is to just go for it, take the plunge and your kids will follow.

Race, COVID, and Mom Advice with Danielle Brooks
00:57:55

Danielle Brooks is an accomplished actress and Juilliard graduate. You know her as Taystee in Netflix's Orange is the New Black. She's done Shakespeare and was also nominated for a Tony for her role of Sofia in the 2015 Broadway production The Color Purple. In November of 2019, Danielle gave birth to her daughter, Freeya.

This episode is all about giving and receiving mom advice. Danielle joined Hilaria and Daphne right in the streets of Brooklyn—because in reality, being a mom means adapting to the situation at hand, and that's just what Danielle did. She talked about her pregnancy, her C-section, and why she wants to move back to the south. They also cover the subject of race and how Danielle will prepare her daughter for the world. Raising Awareness About Child Sexual Abuse With The Child Rescue Coalition
00:59:01

This episode of Mom Brain covers a difficult topic, but it's a discussion that is necessary for the safety of children everywhere. The Child Rescue Coalition is a nonprofit organization doing an incredible job in the fight against child sexual abuse. They do this by building technology for law enforcement, free of charge, to track, arrest and prosecute child predators. We're joined by Carly Yoost Founder and CEO of the CRC, and Moe McClanahan, a 20 year law enforcement veteran and member of the Christiansburg Police Department's Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, who is also an investigator working with the CRC.

For this episode, you might want to keep your children out of the room. It's an intense but highly informative conversation where Carly and Moe tell Hilaria and Daphne about the world of online predators. They discuss the cutting edge technology Child Rescue Coalition utilizes to track predators, and how that technology aids law enforcement in 96 countries worldwide. Carly and Moe also discuss how to protect your child from the threats of sexual abuse. Mom Boss | Dawn Russell Founder of 8Greens
00:24:44

Another amazing Mom Boss joins us, and she has got one inspiring story. Dawn Russell is a cancer survivor, health advocate, entrepreneur, founder of 8Greens, mother and wife. She was named to Vanity Fair’s Hall of Fame, honored as one of Vogue’s four women of empowerment, featured in the book 100 Most Powerful Women of the Next Generation, and was a spokesperson for Estée Lauder.

Dawn talks to Hilaria and Daphne about how she founded 8greens out of necessity. At age 25, she was diagnosed with stage 4 Lymphatic cancer. When doctors could do no more, she went in search of solutions and found them by discovering the immense value of smart nutrition. She beat her cancer and spent the next 5 years working through 264 prototypes to create the world’s first green effervescent tablet that contained these 8 essential greens. Realizing that only 13% of Americans (including children) get the minimum daily recommended amount of greens, Dawn went on a mission to help anyone get the benefits of greens no matter where they are or how hectic their lives. Thus 8Greens was born.

Talking Women's Birth Rights With Sara Ojjeh
00:47:21

Sara Ojjeh wants you to have the birth you want to have. She's a trained birth doula, birth rights activist, philanthropist and mom of three young boys. After supporting her sister-in-law during her labor, Sara got the idea to go all in and become a doula. She has also become an activist focusing on women's birth rights here in the US. Sara is a producer for the upcoming documentary film "Born Free," which tackles maternal mortality in the U.S.

In this episode, Sara discusses how it's the right of every woman to choose how she wants to deliver her baby, but in the U.S. it is not that simple. Many women face an uphill battle if they want something other than what insurance covers (or God forbid, they don't have insurance). Her documentary “Born Free” sheds light on some eye opening facts – like how in the U.S., the number of maternal deaths per 100,000 births between 1995 and 2015 has risen by 30% – or that black mothers in the U.S. are 4 times more likely to die of childbirth complications than white mothers.

Together with Hilaria and Daphne, they discuss Sara's choice of home birth and what it's like to give birth to twins. Plus, they talk about maternity mortality rates and how the U.S. can do better when it comes to how we treat mothers in labor. A great resource for expectant moms to be informed is childbirthconnections.org.

Lindsay Price On Why Adoption Is So Important
00:50:23

If you're a child of the 90s, you probably remember Lindsay Price after she joined the cast of 90210 in 1998, or prior to that when she made a name for herself in both "All My Children" and "The Bold and the Beautiful." Most recently she played Camille in 2 seasons of "Breaking Up Together." In 2008 she starred in the NBC drama, "Lipstick Jungle." Inspired by her mom's harrowing adoption story in South Korea, Lindsay is an adoption advocate and works with AdoptTogether to spread awareness about the importance of adoption and how many children in the world need loving homes.

Lindsay opens up to Hilaria and Daphne about how life for her changed when she went from a mom of one to a mom of 2, her approach to balancing the chaos of life between her career and motherhood, and how she handles the aggression/rough housing her little boys display towards each other. However, things get amazing when she opens up about her mom's incredible story of survival and her journey out of South Korea, and her subsequent adoption which so deeply connects Lindsay's own life today.
