Episode Date
49: Shooting 100 Weddings A Year wtih Kaye Shaye Films || How To Film Weddings Podcast
49:49

Shooting 100 weddings in 1 year. We will say that one more time. 100 WEDDINGS IN 1 YEAR. Is this even possible? Would you want to even do this to yourself? Well Kaylor of Kaye Shaye Films did that in 2018. Over 100. This isn’t a podcast to tell you that you should shoot 100 weddings in a year. Rather a conversation with Kaylor about all she has been up to, the HARD WORK she has put in to grow her business into a 6 figure company.

We also talk about the video. Yes, that video. If you haven’t seen it, here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3Il1A_-vwI. She was featured in a Full Time Filmmaker video which caused quite the uproar on Facebook. Questioning whether a female in the industry can really make good money, and survive in a male dominated world. Well let’s just tell you this, and it is a spoiler alert, females are DOMINATING in the industry. John and Nick are pumped to share this interview with Kaye Shaye Films where we break down just how she shot 100 weddings in a year, what she is up to this year, and some helpful tips on growing a business through good ol’ hard work. We also talk about how she has gone from a few thousand, to right at 20K followers on her Instagram page.

Throw on those ear buds, and get ready for some #deepnuggets as we talk with Kaylor. Be sure to follow along live inside of our Facebook Group with the conversation!

047: Destination Wedding Q&A with Henry Martens II How To Film Weddings Podcast
57:21

John sits down with Henry Martens of The Brothers Martens to ask all of the questions about his upcoming trip to Italy, to film his first International destination wedding. The Brothers Martens travel all around the world shooting weddings, and although John has shot nearly 500 weddings, he hasn’t ever traveled outside of the U.S. to film one.

John and Henry chat about all of the things to be thinking about to travel for a wedding (not just internationally). What to pack, what to leave at home, and everything in between. This podcast is a bit different, because John was really wanting to just ask Henry all of the questions regarding travel. So this one is more of a podcast where you can listen in on the conversation, and hopefully pick up a thing or two about traveling.

We know this one is specific, but we KNOW that it will help you, even if you aren’t planning on traveling in the near future. Listening to the conversation will give you a behind the curtain look at what all we are thinking about for some of these bigger destination packages! We have actually interviewed Henry one time before, and it is a good one!

We also talk about the conference that Henry will be teaching at in October, Vision Quest. It is going to be insane!

We hope you enjoy! Until next time, SEE YA!

Youtube. You know that video platform that is owned by Google? The #2 biggest search engine in the world? Yeah, you need to be killing it on there. The truth is, that are not on Vimeo looking for wedding videographers. Other film makers are on Vimeo. So are you too late to join the YouTube game, or is it too late to take it seriously? Absolutely not. Now is the time to take your YouTube channel to the next level. More people are on YouTube than ever before, and you need to be active on YouTube!

Nick and John have both grown their YouTube channels slow and steady over the past 2 years. In November of 2017 John had under 500 subscribers. At the time of this recording, he has right at 10,000. Nick started his channel less than 18 months ago, and at the time of this recording he has over 5,000 subscribers. But who cares about subscribers if you don’t get any bookings from YouTube? Well, we can promise you it has gotten us several weddings, and a lot of destination and travel weddings as well.

Join us in this podcast as we talk about how Nick has added almost 4000 subscribers since January, how he got a video to go “viral” with a million views, and what it has meant to his business since growing his channel. John and Nick break down what they have been up to on YouTube, and how they are getting real clients from the platform, and how they are continuing to grow their channels each month.

This episode can change your entire business. So take some notes, and really lean in. We recorded an episode early in our podcast talking about how to get found on YouTube where we break it down on how we upload / what we are thinking about, so you might want to check that out here: https://bit.ly/2Ys3FwH

We can’t wait to see you all upping your YouTube Game! Until next time, SEE YA!

045: Finding Your Voice A Little Long Distance II How To Film Weddings Podcast
50:51

🖥 🛒 Visit the How To Film Weddings Website & Shop: https://bit.ly/2X5PoSz

We’ve all seen the “typical” wedding video. The couple loves it, but does it TRULY inspire you as a film maker? Do you feel like you created something that nobody else on the planet could have created? We all get in a rut of just pumping out edits, and getting into a routine with the way we do things.

Let’s queue up our conversation with Josh Helton, of A Little Long Distance. If you haven’t seen their work, they take it to an entirely different level. The edits aren’t perfect, rather they are more raw. They include moments from times that aren’t just the wedding day. Josh and his wife Jess now live in Ft. Collins Colorado, but just moved from the Nashville area. Their entire vibe is oozing with personality, and it is just so relatable, that they are charging nearly $10,000 for some of their films. He isn’t doing flashy gimbal shots, or crazy camera tricks. At the core, it is just really good content. It is hard to explain what he is doing, and we think that is why so many of us are looking to their films to inspire us with our own. But he takes his films to such a personal level that they sometimes are almost painful to watch. Because it is just that intimate. Don’t take our word for it, check his website out here: http://bit.ly/2Z4rjMP

The point of today’s episode isn’t to get you to shoot like Josh, rather to shoot like YOU. What does that look like? We don’t expect you to know it the first time you shoot a wedding. But we want you to challenge yourself to push to another level with your couples. To push to another level with your edits. Get out of your own box, and think to yourself “what would I make if I had no boundaries.” Work on that. We hope you enjoy today’s episode as much as we recording it!

Also, a huge thank you to our amazing community. If you aren’t part of the How To Film Weddings Facebook group, check it out here https://bit.ly/2DPCelB. It is a great place to get connected with other film makers, and to grow as artists and business people.

The dreaded wedding hangover. Ever had one? If you've been in this industry very long you know that it is a REAL THING. We see posts week after week about how so many are DEAD the day after a wedding.

But what if we told you that you never had to have a wedding hangover again!?

Nick is joined by his awesome wife Jenn this week on the podcast and they talk about how they haven't had a wedding hang over in 2+ years! Jenn has been on a health and fitness journey since 2017 and has learned a lot about health, nutrition and the importance of being active.

Jenn and Nick really open up about how their life (and business) has drastically improved after they decided to take their health seriously. They get real practical on ways to avoid that hang over and answer the questions you have about health, business and balancing the two together!

See all of the details from The Wedding Film Retreat Here https://bit.ly/2L566iH

We have been waiting to have these two on the How To Film Weddings Podcast for some time, and are SO EXCITED to bring you Rick and Sarah Pendergraft of PenWeddings. Widely acclaimed as the best wedding story tellers on the planet, these two literally travel the globe filming extravagant weddings with beautiful stories. When you watch a PenWeddings video, you know it is them because of their careful attention to detail, and their unmatched story telling ability. So Nick and John sit down to talk to these two about how they do just that, capture riveting stories. They have amassed nearly 50,000 youtube subscribers and have had several videos go VIRAL on youtube with well over a million views (and one with nearly 9,000,000)! They didn’t do this by accident, they did it by telling stories that connect with people.

We ask them their process of getting to know the couples before the wedding, deciding what stories to tell, coming into the wedding day with a gameplay, and so much more. You might want to listen through this one a couple of times, because it is packed full with great info. Not to mention, Sarah and Rick are fellow Tulsans (shout out to Oklahoma) and have known John for years.

We can’t leave without mentioning that we also talked about the Wedding Film Retreat. This getaway / retreat / conference is happening next January in Puerto Vallarta. A 5 day, all-inclusive resort style retreat where tons of amazing speakers are coming in to drop knowledge. Speakers in 2020 include Matt Johnson, Henry Martens, Jonathan and Kaye, and the Pendergrafts. What a ridiculous lineup for an incredible time to grow as a professional. We have all been there before. We finally get a meeting set up with a potential couple, and we really don't know what we should do to make the biggest impact. How can we make more money, and not come across as a sleazy salesman? How can we get to a point in our industry where we are respected enough to charge larger amounts?

John and Nick sit down with Jonathan and Kaye (http://bit.ly/2YhKYIS), a husband and wife team out of Atlanta, Georgia that focuses on LUXURY weddings. What does that mean? Like the really big budget ones where they are dropping huge sums of money on their weddings. But did they start out in this position? Or did they have to work their way up to this spot?

We go deep with these two on how they are maximizing profits, building a brand that is synonymous with high-end luxury, and exactly what they are doing to continue to stay relevant in their market. This one is so full of information, you might want to listen to it twice!

What makes you different? Do you hate that you can't be like everyone else? Are you constantly comparing your work to someone else's thinking you will never get there? We do this all of the time. We are our worst critic, and we usually try to hide the quirks that make us different than everyone else.

When John met Eric Floberg at Venture Workshop, it was love at first sight. Not really, he was actually kind of like "who the heck is this guy?" Eric was completely okay with just being himself, quirks and all. This is what makes him so easy to relate with. Maybe it is why his YouTube channel is blowing up with over 34,000 subs at the time of this recording (https://bit.ly/2X3B15u), or why his Instagram has over 25,000 followers (https://bit.ly/2Mp4CRb).

John sits down with Eric to talk about how numbers on social media don't really fulfill you. Being vanilla in your business, or just trying to fit in, isn't fulfilling either. So what do you do? You lean in to what makes you different.

We also talk about how Eric booked an insane Yosemite destination wedding, and how it has made him over $40,000 since he has shot it. Buckle up friends, you are going to enjoy this one!

Processing payments, sending contracts, keeping up with details. It can all get a little overwhelming when running a business. Let's face it, we only have so much time in the day. Most of us are a one or two person company, and the details can get the best of you if you aren't careful. This is why we LOVE using CRMs.

What is a CRM? How can it help your business? What if you could run your entire business through one platform? Today we sit down with Devrie Donalson, from HoneyBook to talk about why using a CRM is so helpful for you as a business owner. We also talk about how much time it can save you while running the business. You can create workflows that automatically send out email reminders for payments, keep your contracts all in one place, show you your hot leads, and more. If you don't use one, you definitely should be! Facebook ads don't work for me. Marketing on social media is a waste of money. Most all of us have said this from time to time. But what if we were just doing it wrong? What if there was a way to make more money, and find your ideal clients by using the tools created in Instagram and Facebook? We stumbled upon Max Sadik a few months back, and he is literally crushing it when it comes to Facebook and Instagram Ads. Not only is he a wedding photographer, he has an incredible Facebook Group (http://bit.ly/2Wji3SV) where he gives away a TON of free content on how to grow your business using these tools. Not to mention he is Facebook Certified for their ad platform. Which means the dude went and took classes on these things. Pretty much the Yoda of social media marketing for wedding professionals. Not to mention, the dude has an incredible beard and haircut. Buckle up, because this week might take you for a ride!

035: Shooting for your Edit with Archaius Creative
48:47

While John was out at Venture Workshop, he sat down with David and Breanna from Archaius Creative to talk to them about what all they were teaching at the workshop, and to hear a little more about what they can offer to our community.

If you don't know, they are and editing house based in Southern California with 15 team members to help come alongside you as an extension of your team. They can cull your footage, all the way through completely editing it for you. They have colorists, sound engineers, and more to help you with whatever you might need with your business.

With that being said, they have edited hundreds of films, and see some of the same mistakes over and over again. So John sits down with them to talk about what they see on a weekly basis with editors from all over the country. This is a great episode for you to listen in as we have a conversation about editing, shooting for the edit, and ways they can help you out.

And as a bonus, for the HTFW listeners, they are offering 50% off of the Rough Cutting Course they just launched! Use code HTFW50 to get the deal (the first 100 to purchase get this deal). Here is the link to find the class: https://bit.ly/2VUVV1b

034: Never Over Draft Your Bank Account Again
54:52

We have all been there. We wake up, open up our banking app, and see a negative balance. We frantically try to figure out what we can sell, what isn't bolted down at our house, and we wonder why we ever got into business for ourselves in the first place. It sucks. Straight up can drive someone to a state of depression if you aren't careful.

So what do we do to make sure this never happens again? Earn more? Spend Less? A lot of us creatives think we can out earn our stupidity when it comes to handling our money. You can have a high six-figure business, and still over draft your account if you aren't paying attention (trust us, John did this in 2017). We are all human, we all deal with this, so we figured we'd sit down and talk through what we both do in order to make sure this doesn't happen.

Nick gets a little vulnerable and asks John to go through his process of how he makes sure he doesn't over draft, and what systems he put in place to make sure he is solid, especially in the dry months, or the off season. This episode will give you so much PEACE if you follow what we are teaching. The truth of the matter is you HAVE to pay attention to this stuff or you won't be in business for long.

So pour yourself a cup of Joe, throw in those earbuds, and listen to John and Nick as they walk through EXACTLY what they do to make sure they don't overdraft their accounts.

033: Live Q&A From Venture Workshop in Denver, CO
01:32:29

Hold up, wait a minute. Did that just happen? We are still pinching ourselves to make sure this really happened. John was able to sit down with ALL of the speakers from Venture Workshop (https://bit.ly/2VEjdwV) for a LIVE Q&A in front of all of the attendees. We took questions from our Facebook Group (https://bit.ly/2DPCelB), our Instagram page (http://bit.ly/2z2NuIA), and we took questions from the live studio audience.

We had fun, we answered some tough questions, and we all teared up a little bit to a few of the answers. The thing that we took away so much from this week is the community aspect. WOW. What a community of wedding film makers, and we were blown away at how they treated us. A huge thank you to everyone who attended, and for the people who put on Venture Workshop.

The lineup included Jay Worsley, Jordan Bunch, Seth Dunlap, David Reynosa, Calen Rhome, Matt Johnson, Scott McKenna, and Kristine Rhome. What in the literal heck. What a lineup. Check links below to follow everyone!

032: Live Q&A 002 II How To Film Weddings Podcast
01:04:52

We are pumped to release this brand new episode of the How To Film Weddings Podcast! This week is a recording from our LIVE Facebook Q&A we had in April. John and Nick sat down to answer any and every question that was thrown our way.

We love our Facebook community, and are amazed at how fast it has grown. We are now able to do things like this, where YOU the listener can help us create content that is not only timely, but relatable to what you are actually going through.

We promise that one day we will figure out how to make sure both of us are recording good audio (Nick accidentally didn’t record into his good mic), and that we get the Facebook lives working properly (John had to restart it twice, dropped his phone). Even though it isn’t perfect, we think the content is more than worth it. Our apologies this week as the audio is a bit rough on Nick’s end, but hey, you didn’t pay for this anyway!

If you’re interested in joining our Facebook group, the link is below. We’d love to have you join! Until next time, SEE YA!

031: Hello Tomorrow Films, Adding Personality To Your Brand
49:25

Not going to lie, we pretty much just laughed and cut up for an hour when we talked to Mac and Erin from Hello Tomorrow Films. They are so full of personality, and it is refreshing. To be honest, they felt like friends. Which is exactly what we talked about with them. How to infuse your personality into your brand. How to make yourself stand out and be attractive to the IDEAL clients for you.

John stumbled about Hello Tomorrow Films last year, and was immediately drawn in. Mainly because of a video they have on their about page (see the video here https://bit.ly/2UWkkTx) where they are in front of the camera. It shows them in all of these amazing locations, with a voice over telling THEIR story. This got us thinking, not too many people show their story too much. Especially on our websites. So we chat for a while about just how they do that. How they fuse their personality into their brand, and how that has affected the price they can charge, along with the couples they book.

It can be hard to put yourself out there. But in 2019, couples want to SEE who they are going to be working with on the wedding day. So we break down some thoughts on how to add personality to your brand, and help grow your business. We also chat about how they work together as a husband and wife team, and how great it is in Canada.

A quick thank you once again for the AMAZING community that has surrounded us at HTFW. Our Facebook group is growing so fast (check it out here https://bit.ly/2DPCelB), and our podcast continues to grow each week. THANK YOU for sharing our videos, and helping us spread the word! 030: Building a 6 Figure Business in 2 Years with Jake Weisler II How To Film Weddings Podcast
45:59

$0 to $100,000 in 2 years. That is what Jake Weisler has done with his business. Is this typical? Not at all. So how did he do it? Spoiler alert, he put in a TON of work, has incredible films, and knows how to build his brand (mainly on Instagram). Don't worry, we talk through exactly what he has done to grow his business in a relatively short amount of time.

We talk about it on the podcast all of the time. The Crockpot method, not the microwave. This might feel like a microwave. But it isn't. He has slowly built this brand by doing more work than the average guy. So the question is, what is holding you back? Hopefully this episode of the How To Film Weddings Podcast will help you push into that 6 figure range with your business.

Also, a quick shoutout to all of you listening and joining in. It means the world with us. We are now reaching thousands of listeners, and are sort of blown away at how receptive this community has been to us. We don't take it lightly that you are giving us your time. So all we can pretty much do is send some good vibes, and digital high fives your way! Until next time, SEE YA!

028: How To Get the Best Audio on a Wedding Day with Ryan Cota II How To Film Wedding Podcast
58:02

Let’s be honest, most of us suck when it comes to capturing clean audio on the wedding day. It’s something that videographers really don’t take enough time to really pay attention to when they get started. We just get what we can, and try to work with it. But more and more of us are really diving into how to get the best audio possible for our couples. What microphones should you use? How can you get the best audio for letters or speeches?

We are so excited for a BRAND NEW episode of the How To Film Weddings today with Ryan Cota. Ryan is a professional audio engineer that has produced feature films, music, and more. His day job includes being the audio engineer for the Sacramento Kings. This guy is a “super geek” when it comes to audio. We interview Ryan about everything it takes to capture the best audio on a wedding day.

So grab a coffee, put in those ear buds, and hear from one of the best on an incredible way to up the quality of your wedding films.

027: LIVE from Las Vegas at WPPI With Charlie Hilbrant II How To Film Weddings Podcast
46:36

John was able to go to WPPI in Las Vegas this year, and scope out all of the new things they are doing for the Wedding Videography community. A couple hours after flying in, John sat down with Charlie Hilbrant, of Charlie Hilbrant films to talk. It was a bit weird, as it was the first in-person podcast that we have done before. (Much easier to edit by the way).

We decided to record the podcast right inside the casino, so if you hear some bells and dings, that would be Vegas! Charlie and John talked about WPPI, film making competitions, why it is important to submit your films for review, and the overall state of the wedding industry. It really was a great talk, and we can't wait for you to listen!

As a side note, our community is growing so fast, and we can't thank you enough for joining along! Every week we are hitting new records, and it is because of YOU! Thanks so much for all of the kind words. Let us know below where you are watching from, and what you thought of this episode! Can't wait to hear what you think!

026: Destination Weddings & Sound Design with Henry Martens of The Brothers Martens II How To Film Weddings
01:04:57

Not gonna lie, John fangirled out a little bit when we had Henry Martens from The Brothers Martens on the Podcast. If you haven't followed Henry's work, it is in a league of its own. Not only are the color grade and shot selection top notch, Henry brings in sound design and incredible edits to make true wedding FILMS. This isn't just a recap of the day, it is a film that constantly pushes the limit of creativity.

Henry is based in Texas (yay for another awesome Texan on the pod), but spends most of his time traveling the globe shooting destination weddings. He has filmed in countries all around the world including Bali, Italy, France, Iceland, Nicaragua, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, and the Bahamas. He brings you there with him, in his films.

In today's How to Film Weddings Podcast, Nick and John interview Henry on how he has gotten so many destination weddings, how he approaches the shoots when he is in another country, tips for traveling with gear, and then we talk about his awesome sound design, and how he goes about building such incredible stories.

We could have gone on for another hour, so we guess we will have to have Henry back on the show!

025: Adding a Photographer To Your Team II How To Film Weddings Podcast
55:32

In today's podcast, Nick sits down with John to discuss how John is earning an additional 6 figure income by adding a photographer to his team. Yep, you read that right! You might be thinking to yourself, "I don't want to add photography to my business." That is totally fine. We still think this podcast will be super helpful for you. By adding a photographer, John has created another revenue stream. We break down how he did that, and it just might get you thinking of ways you can add to your business by creating more revenue streams.

We all want to make more money per job, so give this one a listen and see what you think! If we can make more money per wedding, we can accept less work. Which will give us more time to work harder on each project. Give this one a listen for sure!

So excited about this week's How To Film Weddings Podcast with McKenzie Miller. She has been shooting weddings for over 10 years, and has built a brand in NYC that is pushing the limits in quality, and in budgets. She hasn't jumped onto the trends, and has maintained a consistent "classic" look in her films.

We talk to McKenzie about keeping a timeless look to her films, what she wished she would have known when she was starting out, how she shoots in NYC, and so much more. If you haven't checked out her work, it is incredible. We will link to her website below.

023: Live Q&A 001 II How To Film Weddings Podcast
01:02:39

Not gonna lie, we are stoked about this new LIVE Q&A series!

In our continued effort to keep fresh and relatable content, we came up with the idea to do a LIVE Q&A in our How To Film Weddings Facebook Group (if you haven't joined, you can do so here: https://bit.ly/2DPCelB). We posted in the group, asking questions from YOU our listener, and we were blown away by all of the questions and comments. Nick and John sat down for right at an hour to answer as many of your questions as possible. We talked about how to grow your business if you are just getting started, our ceremony setups and what cameras we use, tips for making more money and getting into higher end weddings, and SO MANY MORE.

This really was a ton of fun, and we can't wait to do another one. The thing that we are really starting to love about our community is that the overall vibe. Everyone is so helpful to others, newer people are getting advice from veterans, and we are focusing on what matters when growing as an artist, and a business person.

Check out the video, comment, share, smash the like button, and let us know how we are doing. If you know someone that needs to see this video, do us a favor and send it to them. We love how organically this is all growing, and it is because of YOU. Thanks for listening, and until next time.. SEE YA!

022: What I Learned From Planning My Own Wedding With Leslee Layton II How To Film Weddings Podcast
51:18

Excited to drop a brand new podcast, with someone you may not know quite yet. Nick sits down with Leslee Layton, an Oklahoma based wedding film maker, to chat about all of the things when it came to planning her own wedding. Through the stressful process, she has a lot to talk about that could help you, even if you are already married, or not yet married.

If you are in the wedding filmmaking industry and you are not yet married, you might have a leg up on those who get married before they get into this profession - you'd think so anyway. You probably have ideas for the style and look on the big day. But what would you say if we told you that even wedding professionals have a hard time planning their own wedding?

Leslee Layton of Leslee Layton Films got married in the Spring of 2018 and had been in the industry for almost a decade, yet the whole process was super overwhelming for her! Nick wanted to talk with Leslee about her experience as a bride and what she has learned from that process.

Two initiatives came from Leslee's experience as a bride - "Story First," and "Let's Revel." "Story First" is the direction that Leslee takes all of her couples through when planning out their wedding video. She walks her clients through everything that will help her tell a better story, even down to 'how to write personal vows.'

"Let's Revel" is a new blog launched last month that is aimed at giving real advice from wedding professionals to help engaged couples. Their message of the site is to help couples be real and authentic in their wedding day.

Buckle up, this one is a great one to listen to. We are excited to see what you think! Let us know in the comments below, or share this with someone that needs it!

021: Your Work Isn't the Most Important Thing with Tyler Herrinton II How To Film Weddings Podcast
01:04:36

Your work isn’t the most important thing. Let that sink in for a second. How many people do you know that have AMAZING work, but only get a couple hundred views on their videos? Why is this?

When it comes down to it, a LOT of people focus solely on the creative side of their business, and think everything else will just work out. They think that if they make good enough work, people will come flocking to them. For the most part, unless you hit the jackpot of luck in your business, this isn’t the case.

We get it, there are some businesses that just pop, everyone wants to book them, and they don’t have to focus as much on the business. But if that isn’t you, and you are really wanting to grow a business that will make you MONEY over time, this is the podcast for you.

John sits down with Tyler Herrinton of The Herrintons (see their work here: https://bit.ly/2HdRtHd) to talk about how they run a successful business. He and his wife, Ashley, have been building a solid business for years now. John and Tyler geek out a little about building a brand that will sustain you long term, workflows, taking care of clients, and why your work isn’t the most important thing.

On top of all of Tyler and Ashley’s success, they have a YouTube channel designed to help out other pros (check it our here: https://bit.ly/2tH1Rim). From tech reviews, to behind the scenes tutorials, these guys are pumping out some really amazing content for couples. Their website is full of freebies for wedding film makers, so you might want to check that out too!~

You definitely don’t want to miss this week’s episode of the How To Film Weddings Podcast! Do us a favor, leave a comment below, subscribe, share, or thumbs up this video. Digital high fives if you do all of these things!

019: Building a Seven Figure Business with Jordan Bunch II How To Film Weddings Podcast
48:55

Hold onto your Cowboy hats, we have another Texan on the Podcast today! Nick and John sit down with the man himself, Jordan Bunch, to catch up and talk about all of the things that he is doing these days.

Entrepreneurship runs through his veins. He is always building a new brand, or working on getting more business. This is the guy that started the Wedding Film Academy Podcast, and has had over 100 episodes of the show. He teaches in conferences all over the place, and has a passion for teaching others how to MAKE MONEY doing what you love. He has made the business side of running a business sexy again (he may even have a t-shirt that says "make business sexy again"). But in all seriousness, this dude is building an empire and it is quite inspiring to watch.

He started a boutique brand, Jordan Bunch Studios, which then grew into the massively profitable Lady Bird Studios shooting hundreds of weddings each year. His team continues to grow, and he is definitely aiming for the 7 figure mark in his business.

He's recently rebranded the Wedding Film Academy into Film Mavericks to reach a broader audience of filmmakers to make a bigger difference. He is focusing on creating photo & video content for businesses.

There is so much more going on with this guy, so grab yourself a cup of coffee, throw on the headphones and give this episode a listen.

57:35

Do you ever feel like you are just editing all of the time, you don’t have any fresh ideas, and that your films suck? Yeah, we do that too. You’re not alone. What it really comes down to, is that you have to make sure you don’t get yourself stuck in a rut. You can’t just look at what others are doing, and say “oh, I need to do it that way.” We are so very excited to share with you our How To Film Weddings Podcast, where we sit down with David Reynosa of Forestry Films.

If you have been in the wedding film world for any amount of time at all, you’ve most likely heard of the epic work that is happening at Forestry Films. Today we chat about how David has built such a loyal following, and how he has continually pushed the limit with his creativity by not limiting himself. We talk about how he began shooting weddings, his long history with street magic (yep, you heard it from us!), and his passion for education and entrepreneurship. We may have gotten carried away a bit by goofing off and laughing, so you will have to forgive us a bit.

017: How Story Will Change Your Wedding Films with Patrick Moreau II How To Film Weddings
53:47

Not going to like, I (John) was a wee bit nervous to interview Patrick Moreau, from Muse Storytelling. To me, he is sort of a legend. Not only has the guy done so much for the wedding industry with tutorials, and story telling. But he has filmed some of the most incredible stories that the world has to offer. His company, StillMotion, began over a decade ago, and they literally changed the entire landscape for wedding filmmakers. He, and his crew were so far ahead of the curve, that they rather quickly were contacted by Canon to help them film tutorials for filmmakers. The films were driven by story. His crew was one of the first companies to do this. They opened up this whole new world (cue the Aladdin theme song) for people in our industry. Our eyes were open to the fact that you could literally have no boundaries when telling a story. I would catch myself watching his films and getting lost in the story. It wasn't just Uncle Fred with a camera and a big light. It was a production. A raw story, and it drew you in. You couldn't help but watch from beginning to end.

With their incredible passion for having no boundaries, and putting story first, their company exploded. Someone from the NFL saw one of their films, and hired them do a documentary on the Playoffs, then the Army vs Navy game hired them on a several hundred thousand dollar contract to product a documentary. This led to Patrick and the team winning an Emmy for their work, and SO MANY more opportunities.

After teaching so many courses on story, Patrick and his team created Muse Story Telling, and have broken down the exact science and psychology of telling a story. They taught courses and workshops around the world.

I owe a ton of my success to his work. I was so honored to get an hour of his time, and would love to hear what you think about this episode. A HUGE thank you to Patrick, and the Muse Story Telling team for letting us hear all of the things that are going on in your world.

Lastly, if you are enjoying this podcast, or our YouTube Channel, do us a favor and share it with your community. The life blood of this podcast is determined on whether or not our community is growing and helping more people So who do you know that needs to hear this? Can you share it with them?

016: Stop Creating Boring Wedding Films with Matt Koza II How To Film Weddings
56:00

Have you ever watched a wedding film and just thought, "this is boring?" Everything is pretty, but there is just nothing special about it? Do you feel like you are in a rut when it comes to your shooting and editing? This just might be the podcast for you.

Nick and John sit down with Matt Koza, from Matt Koza Cinema (http://bit.ly/2HByhop) to talk about how he creates such visually stunning films. If you haven't had the chance to check out Matt's work, do so today and see exactly what we are talking about. He somehow grabs these super creative, and solid angles of things. His films are anything but boring.

In a time where we are all trying to create work to stand out, this guy is doing exactly that. The way he composes shots, the way he gets the light to hit the subject is truly art. We sit down and talk with Matt about how he is running his business, and how he has become so successful.

Once we dive in, we really get practical on how he shoots different parts of the day. From the bride and groom getting ready, to how he lights things, to the reception speeches (you have to listen to this part), we talk about it all. We can not wait to hear what you think about this episode of the How to Film Weddings Podcast!

015: Gear, Matt's Music List and Beards with Matt Johnson II How To Film Weddings
59:45

We have to admit, the first time that Matt Johnson commented on one of our videos, we freaked out a little bit. The great and powerful Matt Johnson knew who we were, and liked what we were doing. Just goes to show how cool this guy is. Legitimately a friend within 5 minutes of meeting the guy. That's probably why so many people follow him these days.

Being able to sit down and chat with Matt was super helpful, and we hope it is for you too. We walk through so many things, including gear, his Music List, and of course, beards. Matt is a wealth of knowledge for sure. We had a hard time even giving this one a title because we talk about so many things. Advice for newbies, growing a following, and so much more. 012: No More 'Where's My Video' Emails II How To Film Weddings
53:53

We've all been there before. In the middle of editing a wedding, only to get an annoying email from a bride who had their wedding 2 or 3 weeks ago. We all know the email "Where's my video? It has been 3 weeks already?!" Instead of working on the wedding you need to be working on, you now have to go and send an email back to the bride telling her that everything is okay, and she will be getting her video soon enough!

We see it in the wedding forums so often. People frustrated at the bride for emailing them. Wait a sec, that is your fault. And we can explain why. What if there was a better way than this? Honestly, if you have gotten this email, you haven't done your job. Yep. Plain and simple, you should have done a better job.

Nick and John walk through EXACTLY what they each do from the time they book a couple for their wedding video, all the way through delivering their product. This back and forth conversation should help you see different approaches on what you could do for your business.
Not only will you be saving time, but you will be building a better rapport with your couples. Because after all, they are your customer. Why wouldn't you make sure to communicate better with them?

Tune in to this episode of the How to Film Weddings Podcast to help your wedding business grow! We are pumped to hear your thoughts on this. Let us know in the comments below! As always, thank you for tuning in to the How to Film Weddings Podcast.

011: Musicbed CEO, Building a Business That Cares II Daniel McCarthy II How To Film Weddings
52:58

Little did we know that when we reached out to Musicbed that we'd get to chat with their CEO and Founder, Daniel McCarthy. Both Nick and John have used Musicbed for years, and have been blown away with their customer service, quality of product, and overall brand.

We wanted to pick his brain about the brand new memberships program they offer, as well as how he turned his business from an idea, to a company generating millions of dollars with over 50 employees. How do they grow, yet still keep those core values?

We can learn a lot from Musicbed when it comes to customer service, keeping your mission in front of you, providing a ridiculously good product, and building a brand. We were both surprised at how much wisdom Daniel dropped on us during the podcast. Be sure to check out MusicBed, and their amazing membership program by clicking here: https://bit.ly/2qSC97o

010: How To Build a Brand II Ray Roman II How To Film Weddings
01:08:13

When you think about charging the big bucks for weddings, one name comes to mind. Ray Roman. He is the official wedding videographer for the Trump family, celebrities, professional athletes, and so much more. His weddings are insanely epic. He travels the world filming multi-million dollar weddings, and hasn't slowed down in nearly 15 years. Ray's message is simple. Charge what you are worth. Don't give away everything and the kitchen sink for free. Build a BRAND that will allow you to demand the highest prices. If you don't, you will be stuck in the middle for the years to come.

So many of us undercharge for our services, thinking that we have to do so in order to "compete." But the truth of the matter is that if we don't raise the tide, you are hurting your market. We talk to Ray about how he charges tens of thousands of dollars for his weddings. You heard that right, TENS of thousands for his wedding films. It can be done. We also talk to him about the problem with our industry, and how we can all contribute to fix it.

Ray is a pioneer in our industry, and a wealth of knowledge about growing a brand that demands the highest price in your market. We sat down with Ray to talk about where he began, and how he got to where he is today. So many nuggets of info on this podcast, and we can not wait for you to hear from Ray on what he has been up to.

The hour flew by, and we will definitely have to have him on the How To Film Weddings Podcast again. Buckle up, this is a good one!

009: Working With Photographers on the Wedding Day II Peyton Rainey II How To Film Weddings
01:01:36

We've all been there before. Annoyed by the photographer at the wedding. They keep walking in front of your shot, they don't give you enough time with the couple, their flash is going off like crazy. But what if it didn't have to be the video team vs the photo crew? What if we took the time to work together?

John sits down with Peyton Rainey, a wedding photographer that has traveled the world shooting weddings, and talks through what it is like to be a photographer and dealing with us, the videographer. This reverse-role scenario really helped to show what it is a photographer is looking for on the wedding day when she sees a videographer. There's a reason that most videographers get a bad name before they even start. Most of us don't take the time to try to work WITH the photographer. So many amazing nuggets in this podcast that will help your experience with wedding photographers be SO MUCH BETTER.

Peyton has been featured on the cover of magazines, in numerous publications, photographed celebrity weddings, and has traveled to over 30 countries shooting weddings! She has a MASSIVE following on Instagram, and has some of the most amazing, and adventurous photographs of couples. Not only is her style incredible, she is a business-minded wedding pro that has not only grown a huge following online, but continues to grow her profits along the way. If you haven't found her already, be sure to check out what she is doing with the links below!

We also dive into how she grew her Instagram account to 60,000+ followers, how she is getting to travel the world photographing weddings, and many more things. She is KILLING the business game, as well as the Instagram game, so we thought it would be super helpful to interview an actual wedding photographer to talk the nitty gritty of what types of videographers she wants to recommend, and what types she wants to avoid.

Pull up a seat, and dive in, as we hope this episode really helps you look at the way you approach working with wedding photographers differently.

007: Following Your Passion II Kraig Adams II How To Film Weddings
51:39

We have a treat for you this week. We sat down with Kraig Adams, founder of Wedding Film School. If you have followed Kraig for any amount of time, you know one thing, he plays by the beat of his own drum. He isn't following the rules when it comes to what most people think of when running their company. There is something oddly refreshing when chatting with Kraig. He doesn't care what you think. That may rub some people the wrong way, and it might inspire others. But the truth is, he has the stats to back up his way of thinking. Not only has he created 1 channel with over 100,000 followers (Wedding Film School, http://bit.ly/2zOsg0G), his personal YouTube channel (http://bit.ly/2z3Esel ) just passed 100K as well.

We sit down to talk to Kraig about handing off the Wedding Film School brand to another wedding filmmaker, building his own channel, building his YouTube channel, strategy for using affiliate links, and what he is currently doing to make money.

Overall, we talked about one thing, following your passion. He does just that, every day. We hope you enjoy this one, and it helps you to remember why you got into this business in the first place.

006: Drones, Personal Projects & Sound FX II Jay Worsley II How To Film Weddings
58:56

Pull up a chair, put in your ear buds, do whatever you need to hear this podcast. Nick sat down with Jay Worsley of Everly Films (Check them out here http://bit.ly/2yVvCiD). He needs no introduction, but is well known for his incredible edits, visual storytelling, and work with drones. Not to mention he is one of the featured speakers at Venture Workshop (http://bit.ly/2DojRFo), and just released a Drone Master Class (http://bit.ly/2zuxtKB). This dude is legit.

This conversation will challenge you to step up your game, not only with your aerial work, but with sound fx, and personal projects. They talk about the importance of doing passion projects, work that you have complete freedom to create however you want. Jay even goes into meeting with Philip Bloom, and the advice he gave him that has completely changed the way he does his work.

This podcast will challenge you to search within, and stop just going through the motions on your films.

005: LoveStoriesTV CEO & Founder Rachel Silver II How To Film Weddings
01:02:22

So many of us have been getting strikes against our Vimeo accounts out of nowhere. If you are like John, you are frantically downloading films, trying to find a way to get them all off of your server in case you get the boot. Well, it happened to John the other day. Strike 3. A song that he had licensed was flagged, and the 3rd strike was given. The first 2 strikes came from private videos from before 2010 (Dance Recitals) that had unlicensed music on them. With all of this craziness, John cancelled his Vimeo channel, and looked for other option.

Nick and John sit down and chat with the founder of LoveStoriesTV, Rachel Silver, on her platform that is build for the wedding filmmaker. Can we use her player to upload our videos to share with brides? Will it be as clean as Vimeo? We even get real with questions on what their plans are with LSTV, are they making money off our videos, do they plan to in the future, and more. Rachel wasn’t afraid to tackle some of the hard questions, and we are so happy she did. We sure hope you take the time to check out this podcast, as we know it will help your business.

004: Taking Your Client Meetings To The Next Level II Phil Harbuck II How To Film Weddings
59:33

A question was posted in a forum on Facebook, about "what things should I say to a bride on our first meeting." John read Phil Harbuck's response, and thought he was definitely onto something. The truth is, there is no formula. You can't just run down a list of questions, wave a magic wand, and book expensive wedding packages. It takes a lot more than that.

In this episode, John sat down and talked with Phil about his approach to client meetings, and how he has become quite successful over the years. They break down what they do when talking to brides, how they make sure they are taken care of, and their strategies for making sure brides book them if they are the right fit.

In the How To Film Weddings Podcast number 4, listen in as these two really get into the details of doing the hard work, the right way, over time, and seeing results. Can't wait for you to hear from these two!

003: How Nick Booked His First $5,000 Wedding Package II How To Film Weddings
52:50

Something huge happened for Nick this week. After 6 years filming weddings, he booked his first $5,000 wedding film. Yep, you heard that right. $5,000. 5,000 buckaroos. 5,000 smackeroonies. This is a huge milestone in a wedding videographers world, so John sat down and interviewed Nick on how it all began, and more importantly, how he got to booking $5,000 for a wedding. We start at the beginning of his business, and walk through the timeline of what he did, and how long it actually took to reach this milestone.

Sometimes as wedding videographers, we think we should be charging more, or our film should look better, or so many things. But the truth of the matter is, we all start somewhere. You have to build the house one layer at a time, one brick at a time. We take an hour to break down the process it took to actually get there.

Should you expect to charge $5,000 in your 2nd year of business? Not likely. But, there is hope. Tune into the podcast to see just how Nick did it!

002: How To Get Found on YouTube II How To Film Weddings
56:39

So here is the deal. YouTube is really important to your wedding video business. Google (yeah, the largest search engine in the world) owns YouTube, and highly favors the videos you upload to the platform. Also, your potential brides aren't necessarily scrolling through Vimeo for wedding films. Yes, it is impressive to have a great looking embedded video through Vimeo or other services. But where does YouTube stand in 2018?

Nick and John talk about everything YouTube, and how they have each grown their channels exponentially in the last year. We break down how we upload, how we title the video, description, how we tag videos (hugely important step), and how we get our brides to watch and share the videos.

001: Nick Interviews John on How To Book Big Weddings II How To Film Weddings
01:01:50

Nick and John were having so many conversations about how John goes about booking the right clients, and getting paid what he is worth for the weddings. After about 3 weeks of back and forth text messages, they decided maybe they should just do a call and record it.

Pretty much daily, John get a message on Facebook, asking about his pricing model, and how he goes about averaging $6000 and up per wedding film. So hopefully this conversation will help you with your mindset toward your bookings. Again, we don't think we know it all, but we think that the proof is in the pudding.

John is constantly connecting with brides that come in with the $2500-$3500 budget, that end up spending thousands more. They do this when they SEE THE VALUE that John can add to their wedding day.

We hope you enjoy this podcast, let us know if you have any more questions. We would love to hear from you!
