Susan Powell vanished on Dec. 7, 2009. Her body has never been found. From the beginning, West Valley City, Utah police suspected Susan's husband, Josh Powell, had murdered her. You'll learn why Susan stayed with an abusive husband, why Josh did what he did and how the justice system failed Susan and her two boys.

Bonus: Justice Delayed
01:07:09

Secret police wiretap records in the Susan Powell case come to light for the first time, even as Susan Powell's parents fight for change in the state of Washington. This bonus episode takes you behind closed doors, into the private communications of Josh Powell, his brother Michael Powell, sister Alina Powell and father Steve Powell during "Operation Tsunami." What police learned by listening in on their phone calls helped explain why some officers feared for the safety of Susan's sons, Charlie and Braden, in the months leading up to their deaths at the hands of their father.

For years, investigative reporter Dave Cawley has been studying thousands of police documents, journals, videos and diary entries. He has tracked down new sources, followed new leads and traced Josh Powell's trail from West Valley City, Utah, through Idaho, Oregon, Nevada and on to Washington State, where Powell killed himself and his two sons. Ep. 1: Trial update and Hope in Darkness episode 1
00:35:45

Susan Powell's parents have resumed their civil lawsuit trial against the state of Washington after a four-month delay caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Cold host Dave Cawley offers a look at how Pierce County Superior Court has adapted to avoid the risk of spreading the coronavirus.

The lawsuit centers around Josh Powell's February 5, 2012 killing of the sons he and Susan shared, Charlie and Braden Powell. Susan's parents, Chuck and Judy Cox, have sued Washington's child welfare agency, claiming negligence.

This update is followed by the complete first episode of Hope in Darkness, a new series by the KSL Podcasts team behind Cold. Hope in Darkness is hosted by Becky Bruce, a veteran reporter and news producer. It focuses on the arrest of an American citizen named Joshua Holt and his new wife, Thamy, in Venezuela on questionable charges.
