Episode Date
045: How To Live a KICK-ASS Life Even When Life Is Hard

This is the last podcast episode of 2019, so I thought I’d end this season and this podcast year with a straight to the point, no bullshit pep talk on what you can do to live a good life.

You may be like WHAAAAAA Jamie – last podcast of 2019.

YES! We’re taking a break for the holidays and to do some planning for 2020 but don’t worry I will be back – We’re planning some really next level conversations for 2020 so it will be worth the wait!

We’ve dealt with some pretty tough stuff this year.

Co-parenting struggles, legal issues, parenting struggles, family struggles, infertility, debilitating anxiety attacks …

It hasn’t been an easy year.

But it’s also been a really amazing year!!! Probably one of the best years of my life.

When I think back on all the tough things we’ve been through this year, it’s crazy (and amazing) that I feel this positive about 2019.

Now, I’ve been thinking a lot about what separates happy/successful/content/thriving people from those who aren’t and it really does boil down your willingness to own your life

Here’s the truth. This is a truth that I learned the hard way.

Life is hard.

You’re going to have to deal with bullshit.

It doesn’t matter how people treat you

It doesn’t matter how bitter/resentful your ex may be

It doesn’t matter what your parents did or did not do as a child

or how crappy your boss or your mother-in-law is

or what people think about the choices you’re making in YOUR life…

Today in this episode I’m going to share strategies that I’ve implemented in my life to thrive amongst the tough stuff…

I’m confident that if you commit to doing the same, you’ll see a shift in yours!

036: Recovering From Infidelity with Jaclyn Shaw

This week on the podcast, we’re diving into a topic that is REAL for so many and one that is also accompanied with a lot of shame and embarrassment.

My good friend Jaclyn Shaw is on the show to talk about her experience with infidelity in her marriage.

Jak is a wildly passionate Soulpreneur + Manifesting Queen, who gave up living in one place to explore the world (okay, mostly beaches) with her young family. She is known for her real AF approach to life and biz, and for sharing hard truths - like her husband’s affair, and her healing journey from victim to goddess.

Jaclyn believes that EVERY SINGLE WOMAN gets to choose the next part of her story. And that EVERY SINGLE WOMAN has her own unique life path. We aren't designed to do life, biz, marriage, or motherhood the same.

Jak is an expert at leading woman to boldly step into their fears, to strip away the "shoulds" and unapologetically own who they are so that they can break through the self-sabotaging behaviours and patterns that are keeping them stuck.

She guides women to elevate in their relationships via 1:1 coaching and in her signature group program ‘INFIDELITY’.

She is also the co-founder of FEMME and co-host of the Spiritual Smackdown Podcast where she provides Biz + Soul Coaching for wild women ready to rise.

Now even if you haven’t experienced this first hand, you’re going to get something out of this episodes. We dive into owning where you’re at and the role you play in the dynamic of your relationship, how your childhood beliefs creep into your marriages and relationships as an adult, forgiveness and what that really means, following your gut, doing the work on yourself, and the secrets to a successful marriage.

I have to say I went into this conversation with one perspective on infidelity and forgiveness and left with another.

I hope it’s the same eye opening conversation for you.

033: Stop Trying To Make Other People Happy

This episode is going to feel like a cross between sitting down  and having a conversation with Brene Brown and Oprah… I’m not kidding either.

This week my guest is Leisse Wilcox.

She is a writer, a speaker, a life coach and one of the most beautiful humans I’ve ever connected with. She helps women find clarity in what they want, confidence in who they are, and the courage to stay true to both.

Through lots of life lessons and some life altering challenges like divorce, single parenting and tackling aggressive breast cancer, Leisse taught herself to turn the difficult and ugly in life into something purposeful and beautiful.

This episode will leave you feeling calm, inspired and with an urge to ask yourself some very important questions that may just change the game for you.

023: The Ex Next Door With Brandie Weikle

This week on the podcast I am chatting with Brandie Weikle.

Brandie is a host of the award-winning podcast, The New Family. Brandie is the former editor in chief for Canadian Family Magazine, and has also been an editor for the Toronto Start and Today’s Parent.

She writes a column called Modern Family for the Toronto Star, and is working on a book called The Ex Next Door: How a New Generation of Parents is Redefining Life After Divorce.

The idea for The New Family stems from Brandie’s own experience as part of a non-traditional family. She is amicably divorced and for eight years lived next door to the father of her children, even well after his remarriage to her boys’ stepmom. Now they live just around the corner.

In this episode, Brandie and I dive into her story, how she and her ex went from married to neighbors, as well as the touchy subject of how to cope when your family remains close with the ex.

I’m so excited share Brandie’s perspective with all of you… and I’m confident that no matter what your stepfamily dynamic looks like, you’ll have at least one ah ha moment from listening to this episode.

022: How I Grew My Blog and Created my Dream Job

Over the last few months I’ve had so many of you reach out and ask me how I built my platform for stepmoms. You want to know how I grew this community and ultimately created a business doing what I love.

A few weeks back I had the opportunity to talk all about all of this on Kelsey Murphy’s Podcast, Whiskey & Work.

Kelsey Murphy is a speaker, writer and career and business coach who has worked with companies like Facebook, Google, Apple, Twitter, Toms Shoes and Gap

It was actually a huge honor to be interviewed on this podcast, because it happens to be one of my favourites. Every day I have people ask me what my favourite podcasts are to listen to, and this one always makes the list.

People listen to podcasts for different reasons – and personally I listen to get inspired, for personal development, to learn from other people’s successes and truthfully to get strategies on how to take this community to the next level.

The Whiskey & Work Podcast does all of this for me. But it’s not just for entrepreneurs, everyone can get something out of this show!

Not only did Kelsey interview me about my blog and online platform,
we dove into what was holding me back in life – and when I say that I’m talking about what was holding me back from being the best stepmom I could be AND from starting to create the platform and business that I want.

We also talked about my parenting values, my opinion on parenting by the book and how I stopped worrying about what other people think about what I say and do…

I’m telling you all of this because Kelsey has allowed me to share the interview on this podcast too… so that’s what we’re doing today…

I hope you like listening to this episode… as much as I loved recording it.

020: Age Gap Relationships with Natalie Workman of He's 25 Years Older

In this episode we’re talking all about relationships with age gaps.

A few months back I got lost in the rabbit hole of Instagram and stumbled upon Natalie Workman’s Instagram profile @hes25yearsolder

Since Darren and I have a 13-year-age difference, I was very interested in all that she had to say. Let me just say, it didn’t take me long to fall in love with Natalie.

Natalie’s finance Brandon is 25 years older than her. On her blog and most recently her podcast, she talks about all things age gap relationships; Including the obvious challenges and completely unexpected realities of being in a relationship with an older man.

She’s very honest when she says that the most challenging part of their relationship has been navigating the opinions of people.

She says and I quote “when we fell in love, we had no idea how challenging it was going to be to make everyone else fall in love with us too”

In this episode we talk about the challenges of dating an older man, our experiences dealing with other people’s opinions, how Brandon’s kids reacted to this relationship and the life lessons that we’ve both learned from hooking up with an older man with kids!

019: Step-motherhood in same sex relationship with Beth from The Babbling Blonde

A few weeks back I received an email from a long-time follower, and amazingly talented stepmom blogger, Beth from Babbling Blonde blog.

I love Beth’s story, her perspective and her commitment to following her heart!

Beth grew up in small town West Virginia in a super conservative, rural dot in coach country, USA. About 5 years ago she moved to Pittsburgh and ended a 7 year relationship with her college boyfriend… about a years after that she realized she was in love with her best friend Jen, who had an incredible 3 year old daughter.

Jen and Beth moved in together in 2016, and Beth official became a stepmom in 2017.

Obviously being in as same sex relationship makes Beth’s story a little different than the standard stepmom blogger, so when she had trouble relating to what she saw online, she started blogging about her own experience.

In this episode Beth and I talk about all things stepmom life, including Beth’s transition from single and straight, to not only being in a same sex relationship, but having an instant family.

We also tackle her family’s reaction, what it was like to move to a small town where her partner’s ex had deep roots, her biggest mistakes as a stepmom. what makes being a stepmom in a same sex relationship even more complicated and one of the habits she thinks that stepmoms should break.

I love this episode and I just adore Beth and I’m so excited to introduce you to her!

003: Blended Families + Finances: To Merge or NOT to Merge?!

In this episode of The Jamie Scrimgeour Podcast, I chat with Kate Chapman of This Life in Progress, an online community for divorced parents and blended families. Kate is a mom and stepmom to six kids between the ages of 6 and 16, a Co-Parenting expert, an experienced Executive Coach, a widely published author and the creator of the highly acclaimed co-parenting program the Total Co-Parenting Transformation.

Darren and I merge everything, while she and her partner keep things completely separate. Not only does Kate share how she and her husband split finances (and why they do it that way), she talks about co-parenting in a blended family where the rules aren’t always the same for all the kids.

001: The Truth About Our First Year Of Marriage: There was NO Honeymoon Stage

In the first episode of the Jamie Scrimgeour Podcast, my husband Darren joins me to talk about what the first year of our marriage was REALLY like. I’ve been told that our blended family life seems perfect. That’s just not the case! Sure, we’ve come a long way, and have worked really hard to get to where we’re at, but it’s far from perfect.

I often say that going from 26-year-old bachelorette to a stepmom of three was like moving another country that speaks an entirely different language. For us, the transition was far from smooth. In this episode, we talk about our biggest challenges during that first year including what we struggled with and what we argued about most. Straight up, this episode made me realize just how far I’ve come!
