Todays episode is with the one and only Rich Roll.  Vegan ultra endurance athlete, Stanford and Cornell educated, humanitarian and inspiration for thousands world wide, we discuss living a life of meaning and purpose. How to change your habits and stick with it.  How to live your best life and why you deserve health, and happiness.

About Rich Roll

A graduate of Stanford University and Cornell Law School, Rich is a 50-year old, accomplished vegan ultra-endurance athlete and former entertainment attorney turned full-time wellness & plant-based nutrition advocate, popular public speaker, husband, father of 4 and inspiration to people worldwide as a transformative example of courageous and healthy living.

In 2012, Rich became a #1 bestselling author with the publication of his inspirational memoir Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World’s Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself. Taking up where the book leaves off, in 2013 Rich launched the wildly popular Rich Roll Podcast, which persistently sits atop the iTunes top-10 lists. In 2014, Rich & his wife Julie Piatt published the bestselling cookbook and lifestyle primer, The Plantpower Way: Whole Food Plant-Based Recipes And Guidance For The Whole Family. In May 2010, Rich and his ultra-colleague Jason Lester accomplished an unprecedented feat of staggering endurance many said was not possible. Something they call the EPIC5 CHALLENGE- a odyssey that entailed completing 5 ironman-distance triathlons on 5 islands of Hawaii in under a week. Commencing on Kauai, they travelled to Oahu, Molokai and Maui before finishing on the Big Island, following the course of the Ironman World Championships on the Kona coasIn addition, Rich has been a top finisher at the 2008 and 2009 Ultraman World Championships in Hawaii. Considered by many to be one of world’s most daunting and grueling endurance races on the planet, Ultraman is a 3-day / 320 mile double-ironman distance triathlon that circumnavigates the entire Big Island.  Limited to only 35 carefully selected invitation-only participants from all over the world, Day 1 involves a 6.2 mile ocean swim immediately followed by a 90 mile cross-country cycling race.  Day 2 is a 170 mile cycling race.  And the event culminates on Day 3 with a 52 mile double marathon run on the searing hot lava fields of the Kona coast.

But what makes Rich truly remarkable is that less than two years prior to his first Ultraman, he didn’t even own a bike, let alone race one.

Although he competed as a butterfly swimmer at Stanford University in the late 80’s, Rich’s career was cut short by struggles with drugs and alcohol — an addiction that led him astray for the next decade, alienating friends, colleagues and family, landing him in jails, institutions and ultimately rehab at age 31. Although sober, Rich soon found himself 50 pounds overweight; the furthest thing from fit.  Everything came to head on the eve of his 40th birthday.  Defeated by a mere flight of stairs that left him buckled over in pain, he foresaw the almost certain heart attack looming in his near future.

It was time for a major life change.

The day immediately following his staircase epiphany, Rich overhauled his diet, became a dedicated vegan, put on his running shoes and jumped back into the pool.  It wasn’t long before ambition took hold and his quest to participate in Ultraman slowly began.  Two years later, 50 pounds lighter, and fueled by nothing but plants, he surprised the triathlon & ultra communities by not only becoming the first vegan to complete the 320-mile über-endurance event, but by finishing in the top 10 males (3rd fastest American) with the 2nd fastest swim split — all despite having never previously completed even a half-ironman distance triathlon.

In 2009, Rich returned to Ultraman twice the athlete he was the year prior. Despite a stacked field, he took home first day honors with a blistering 2:21 swim victory (6th fastest of all time) and a third fastest bike leg to win the day with a 10 minute lead on the field. On Day 2 Richard suffered a serious bike crash but managed to salvage the day in 6th place overall. With an injured knee and shoulder Richard nonetheless went on to a 7:51 Day 3 double-marathon to hold onto 6th place overall.

Rich’s plant-fueled feats of boundary-pushing athleticism have been featured on CNN and major publications including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times Sunday Magazine, The Huffington Post, Stanford Magazine, Men’s Health Living, VegNews, Triathlete, Outside, 3/GO Magazine and Men’s Fitness Magazine, which named Rich as one of the “25 Fittest Men in the World.”

Along with his wife and four children, Rich resides in Malibu Canyon outside of Los Angeles.

When he isn’t writing, podcasting or spending time with his family, you can find him lost on the remote trails of the Santa Monica Mountains.

Episode 7- Ayesha Sherzai, MD and Dean Sherzai, MD
01:11:17

Today’s episode of Nutrition Rounds is all about how nutrition effects your brain!

We discuss with Dr. Ayesha Sherzai and Dr. Dean Sherzai, how you can PREVENT almost all dementia with whole food plant based nutrition. Yes, a significant amount of Alzheimer’s is preventable with lifestyle modification.  We discuss how plant based nutrition and lifestyle modification lowers your risk of other neurological disease ranging from stroke to multiple sclerosis. This episode is NOT TO BE MISSED!

About Team Sherzai
A unique husband and wife team on the cutting edge of brain science, Dr. Dean and Dr. Ayesha Sherzai are dedicated to educating people on the simple steps to long-term health and wellness through their work as Directors of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Program at Loma Linda University Medical Center, with patients, as well as through online writing, videos, and books.

There is a tsunami of diseases of the brain such as Alzheimer’s, stroke and Parkinson’s disease permeating our culture. In our own communities and families, we all have known at least one person suffering from these illnesses and in many cases seen the fallout first-hand. There is no treatment for these diseases, and the emotional, financial and social burden is immense. These diseases are thieves, stealing time, money and ravaging the minds of our loved ones. The Sherzais see scientists and physicians working furiously to find a cure or these diseases, and in this frantic race against time somehow, the big picture is usually lost among the molecules and chemicals related to the diseases.

As Co-Directors of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Program at Loma Linda University Medical Center, the Sherzais, through research and their extensive collective medical backgrounds, work to demystify the steps to achieving long-term brain health and the prevention of devastating diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Dean Sherzai, MD, PhD, is co-director of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Program at Loma Linda University. Dean trained in Neurology at Georgetown University School of Medicine, and completed fellowships in neurodegenerative diseases and dementia at the National Institutes of Health and UC San Diego. He also holds a PhD in Healthcare Leadership with a focus on community health from Andrews University.

Ayesha Sherzai, MD is a neurologist and co-director of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Program at Loma Linda University, where she leads the Lifestyle Program for the Prevention of Neurological Diseases. She completed a dual training in Preventative Medicine and Neurology at Loma Linda University, and a fellowship in Vascular Neurology and Epidemiology at Columbia University. She is also a trained plant-based culinary artist.

Remember - this is not individualized medical advice. This is a generalized discussion on health and nutrition. Discuss potential changes in your lifestyle and nutrition with your healthcare provider.

About Dean Ornish MD

Dean Ornish, M.D., is the Founder and President of the nonprofit Preventive Medicine Research Institute, and Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and also at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Ornish was trained in internal medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, and the Massachusetts General Hospital. He earned a B.A. in Humanities summa cum laude from the University of Texas in Austin, where he gave the baccalaureate address.

For over 40 years, he has directed clinical research demonstrating, for the first time, that comprehensive lifestyle changes may begin to reverse many chronic diseases, including even severe coronary heart disease, without drugs or surgery.  Medicare created a new benefit category, “intensive cardiac rehabilitation,” to provide coverage for this program.

He directed the first randomized controlled trial demonstrating that comprehensive lifestyle changes may slow, stop or reverse the progression of early-stage prostate cancer.  His research showed that comprehensive lifestyle changes affect gene expression, “turning on” disease-preventing genes and “turning off” genes that promote cancer and heart disease, as well as the first controlled study showing that these lifestyle changes may begin to reverse cellular aging by lengthening telomeres, the ends of our chromosomes which regulate aging (in collaboration with Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn, awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine & Physiology).

His research and writings have been published in the leading peer-reviewed medical journals, including the Journal of the American Medical Association, Lancet, and New England Journal of Medicine. His work has been featured in all major media, including cover stories in Newsweek, Time, and U.S. News & World Report.

He has received numerous awards, including the 1994 Outstanding Young Alumnus Award from the University of Texas, Austin, the National Public Health Hero Award from the University of California, Berkeley, a U.S. Surgeon General Citation, the Beckmann Medal from the German Society for Prevention and Rehabilitation of Cardiovascular Diseases, a Presidential Citation from the American Psychological Association, the Stanley Wallach Award from the American College of Nutrition, the Plantrician Project Luminary Award, and the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine.

Dr. Ornish’s TED talks have been viewed by more than 5 million people.  He has written a monthly column for TIME, Newsweek and Reader’s Digest magazines, is a LinkedIn Influencer, was the medical editor for the Huffington Post,(2009-2016), and cochaired Google Health with Marissa Mayer (2007-2009).

He was appointed by President Clinton to the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy and by President Obama to the White House Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Integrative and Public Health.

The “Ornish diet” has been rated “#1 for Heart Health” by U.S. News & World Report every year from 2011-2017.  The author of six books, all national bestsellers, he was honored as “one of the 125 most extraordinary University of Texas alumni in the past 125 years;” by TIME magazine as a “TIME 100 Innovator;” by Life magazine as “one of the 50 most influential members of his generation;” and by Forbes magazine as “one of the world’s seven most powerful teachers.”

Dr. Angies Biography:
When it comes to the human wellness experience, Dr. Angie says, “My passion is to provide healing through an integrative approach to keep patients healthy and youthful. Most people spend the latter years of life dealing with chronic disease. My mission is to bring healing and improve the quality of life for those individuals looking to stay fit and
healthy, through use of nutrition, fitness, and bio-identical hormone therapy.” Dr. Angie’s own personal journey fueled her desire to help patients. Five years ago she switched to a plant-based lifestyle and adopted regular fitness into her life. She had previously suffered from health problems such as severe eczema, elevated cholesterol, fatigue, and was overweight. She started eating a whole food, plant-based diet, and transformed her health and body amazingly. This allowed her to completely restore her health and even compete and place in a fitness competition. “It was crazy to look at myself in the mirror and look like a fitness model, rather than a typical overweight physician. For this reason, I decided to share my success method with my patients.” Dr. Angie understands that no single approach is right for every individual, so she offers a complete range of services to help individuals with gut problems, obesity, anti-aging, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, chronic fatigue, chronic pain, and overall disease prevention. Combining evidence based medicine, her expertise in the digestive system, and her passion for physical fitness and plant-based nutrition, Dr. Angie has developed a comprehensive approach to helping patients recover from illness and live a healthy life. Additionally, she is part of a new movement called “The Plantrician Project,” empowering individuals with the knowledge and benefits of a whole food plant-based nutrition.Dr. Angie Sadeghi is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and a diplomate of the American Board of Gastroenterology. She has extensive training from the prestigious University of Southern California (USC), and demonstrates exceptional commitment to excellence in treating diseases of digestive tract. Dr. Angie is featured in three documentaries as a leader in the field of plant-based fitness for health and weight loss. Other upcoming projects include a book, Trifecta of Rejuvenation and Health. She was recently published on the cover of Vegan Health and Fitness Magazine, where she shared a health related article on making nutrition and fitness fun! In closing, Dr. Angie would say, “I want to leave a legacy of a doctor who prevented disease in her patients using the mastery of combing integrative medicine, western and eastern medicine, rather than simply using pharmaceuticals.”
