Description

So many of us have been given bad answers to good questions -- questions about God, suffering, prayer, fate, science, justice, and more -- often by people with pure intentions. But we needn't stop with those pat answers. You have permission to take both Christianity and the modern world very seriously, and this podcast will introduce you to people from across the Christian spectrum engaging these timeless and difficult questions in various ways.

What Can We Learn from Kierkegaard? (#136)
01:46:41
Today my guest J. Aaron Simmons joins me to discuss Danish philosopher and theologian, Soren Kierkegaard. Dr. Simmons is an author, Professor of Philosophy at Furman University, and the current president of the Soren Kierkegaard Society (USA). Aaron says “Faith is risk with a direction” and summarizes Kierkegaard with a current application: “You’re human, don’t forget that, and God sees that as a good thing”. As most listeners know, Kierkegaard has been a significant figure for me personally. What is Theopoetics? (#134)
01:27:52
This week, I spoke with author Callid Keefe-Perry on the concept of Theopoetics. Along with his book “Way to Water: A Theopoetics Primer”, we discuss the issue of justice, following Jesus and living out Keefe-Perry’s Quaker practice. Callid speaks about how being grounded in creativity is intrinsic to humanity—we are all “crafters” and “makers” of life. As he advocates for a less dogmatic approach, his Quaker tradition allows for a more artful expression of faith. Joshua Harris, Celebrity & "Gurus" (#133)
01:25:41
In our first installment of the “Healthy Egos” repeating segment (a knowing nod to the fact that both Tony Jones and I have at least a little narcissism running through us), Tony and I are joined by Sarah Lane Richie. We discuss the recent saga of Joshua Harris, newly deconverted author of “I Kissed Dating Goodbye.” His situation naturally brings to mind questions about celebrity, both within and without Christianity. And what is the difference between a “guru” and a humble leader? Integrating Theology & Psychology; Christian Existentialism (#132)
01:36:47
Dr. Brad Strawn (Fuller) joins me today for essentially a two-parter. First, we talk about the integration of psychology and theology broadly, including Brad’s own story of coming to that work in particular. After the break, we talk about how a Christian might also be an existentialist in some ways, a field of thought commonly associated with atheism or agnosticism. Finally, Sarey Concepcion, Communications Director for Blueprint 1543, joins me for a brief interview about some very high-quality free courses around psychology and theology that their organization is offering. How Free Is Our Will? (#131)
01:13:42
I'm joined by absolute neuroscience all-star William Newsome (Stanford, NIH BRAIN Project) to discuss the ways in which our will is both free and constrained. What counts as free will? Are the Sam Harris types right that we have no free will? (Nope.) How do "top-down" and "bottom-up" forces affect our will? When is it the "most free"? Religion, Virtue & Human Thriving (#129)
01:18:58
I spoke with the multi-talented Dr. Pamela King (Fuller Seminary, Thrive Center for Human Development). She is a researcher in developmental psychology whose passion is human thriving. We talk about thriving, as well as how virtue connects to thriving. Before that, she sets the stage with a discussion of religion and its role in both virtue development and thriving. For Pam, a virtue is a "psychological capacity that enables us to know, feel, and do what is right and  good at different times and in different places." I love that definition. We also talk about the relationship between our own evolving narrative identity and the formation of virtues. "Christian Music": Jon Guerra (#128)
01:35:39
I'm joined by one of my favorite Christian recording artists, Jon Guerra. His latest album "Keeper of Days" is phenomenal, and there is so much depth lurking just behind its carefully-constructed songs. Thankfully, a nice dose of that depth comes out in this fantastic conversation! Actor and filmmaker Luke Barnett joins me for another installment of "I Don't Believe in That God." These are conversations with people who do not identify as Christian, but they are not debates. Celibate Gay Christian Bridget Eileen Rivera (#126)
01:18:46
I'm joined by Bridget Eileen Rivera, a sociologist completing her Ph.D. at the City University of New York Graduate Center. A homeschool graduate and alum of Patrick Henry College, Rivera has become a leading voice on gay celibacy in the the church. She has worked with a number of faith-based organizations, including Revoice, Christians for Social Action, and Preston Sprinkle’s Center for Faith, Sexuality, and Gender. Bridget and I differ ultimately on whether we think queer Christians are in general called by God to celibacy, but that didn't stop us from having a really great and interesting conversation about all things gender, sexuality, and faith. From Conservative Presbyterian to Episcopal Priest (#125)
01:21:22
Rev. Greg Farrand joins me to talk through his journey from high school burnout to PCA minister to Episcopal priest to his current gig as the executive director of Second Breath, an organization that promotes ancient Christian spiritual practice in a variety of contexts. Greg wanted an experiential faith, but found himself in a highly doctrine/reason-heavy tradition. His love for a wonderful lesbian couple and their intensely painful experience with him and his previous church also played a central role. We talk about the fruit of the spirit and how we discern truth using it as a guide. "Bible Truths," "Sanctified Common Sense," & "Evangelical Insta-Trust" (#123)
01:58:50
Today I am joined by emerging scholar Heather Griffin to talk through some language of hers that I have found *so* helpful in understanding white Evangelical culture. Terms of hers like "Bible truths," "sanctified common sense," "magic knowledge receptor," "sincerity culture," and "Evangelical insta-trust" all come up in our conversation. Perhaps most impressive, however, is the way she links all of these terms and concepts into an understandable system. To say she is both a keen observer and an empathic pastor at heart is a massive understatement on both accounts. The Story Behind My New Album
00:21:38
I know that most of you are definitively *not here* for my musical chops or compositions, and I'm OK with that! But I did release an album today under the moniker Havana Swim Club, and I am really proud of it. It was a ton of fun to make sample-based dance music during lockdown, and I'm glad to be sharing it with the world today for all your poolside and study/focus playlist needs! A Closer Look at the Black Church (#121)
00:56:46
I'm joined by PEW Research's Besheer Mohamed to discuss their recent fabulous deep-dive into the religious lives of Black Americans. We discuss why they decided on the topic, what was known previously, what they've been able to add, the role of religion in the lives of Black Americans, differences between Islam and Christianity in the Black community, the deep relationship to justice movements, and more. There is a lot of excellent info packed into this relatively tight conversation (by YHP standards anyway!), so enjoy! A Massive Evangelical Sex Survey (#120)
01:37:46
This week, I spoke with Joanna Daigle Sawatsky and Rebecca Lindenbach about their incredible research work for the new book by Sheila Wray Gregoire (their boss) "The Great Sex Rescue." This research involved surveying over 22,000 (!!!) Evangelical women about sex, reproductive issues, gender roles, and more. We break down what they found in their survey, as well as in popular Evangelical marriage/sex resources and the wider academic research around Evangelicalism and sexuality. Purity Culture episodes are always popular on this show, and if you find that topic interesting or relevant, you should definitely listen to this conversation. Church Is Good For You (#119)
02:05:48
I am re-joined by YHP all star guest Greg Cootsona (California State University, Chico) to talk through what we know from all the social science research on whether and how religiosity and church involvement are good or bad for people. We touch on physical and mental health, resilience and happiness, meaning-making, trauma healing, prosocial behavior, and more. We also talk through the ways that it is commonly understood to do harm. I Don't Believe in that God: Joey Holman (Man on Man) (#118)
01:59:38
Another installment of one of my favorite types of episodes, where I chat with people who don't identify as Christian. Often times, I also don't believe in the God that they don't believe in. Joey Holman (ex-Cool Hand Luke) is one half of the Polyvinyl Records duo Man on Man, alongside his boyfriend Roddy Bottum (Faith No More). He grew up in a broken home outside Atlanta, found Evangelical Christianity in his teens, experienced dissonance around his gay sexuality, and eventually did some therapy and gained a lot of insight about his journey. I truly enjoyed our wide-ranging conversation. All About Homeschooling (#116)
01:27:34
My guest is Robert Kunzman, managing Director of the International Center for Home Education Research. He is a professor at Indiana University, where he teaches courses in curriculum, pedagogy, and philosophy of education.  His research explores the intersection of citizenship, religion, and education, with a particular focus on homeschooling. Listeners of YHP asked almost every question in this episode, and Robert is so concise that we are able to get through pretty much all of them! As a researcher, his angle and answers are largely empirical, so keep that in mind -- we aren't getting, for instance, an emotional memoir of one person's insane experience in a home schooling cult. For that, I recommend the book "Educated" by Tara Westover. But this is a great and detailed conversation about a topic that many listeners have intense feelings about and/or history with. Thanks to everyone who submitted questions! I had the immense privilege of speaking with Dr. Lisa Oakley, one of the leading researchers in the field of spiritual abuse. Worries About Progressive Christianity: Brad Jones (#114)
01:54:38
In the first of what I hope are many conversations with those more conservative than myself about progressive Christianity, Brad Jones shares his worries and concerns, both personal and theological. This is a very open, frank, kind, and curious conversation between two people who agree on a good chunk of things but also disagree on a lot. I really enjoyed it and found it very helpful in understanding the experience of a more conservative person dealing with the uncertainty of a growing somewhat-alien movement. Politics. Identity. Tribalism. Woke culture. Partisanship perceptions. Racial resentment. "Holding their nose" for Trump. Immigration Rural/urban divide. All of these are more are touched upon in this wide-ranging data-fueled conversation between myself and Ryan Burge: professor, author, data analyst and ordained American Baptist pastor. ** Please take my Varieties of Church Experience Survey, and share with friends and family (especially more conservative ones!): https://northwestupsych.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3r3jgp1f2oqDJNc ** As someone paying some attention to the news, I was not surprised that Trump was acquitted a second time in the Senate. But back on January 6th, I was somewhat surprised to see so much Christian imagery and signage at the Capitol Hill siege. David Cassidy, a PCA pastor in Franklin, TN, wrote an incredible tweet thread recently on Evangelicals, conspiracy theories, and Christian nationalism. We disagree theologically about plenty, but I respect the hell out of what he's doing, and this was a fantastic conversation. We need more leaders like David if this largely-lost generation of Baby Boomer Evangelicals is to be saved from themselves and brought back to God. Religious Disorientation & Growth (#103)

** Please take my Varieties of Church Experience Survey, and share with friends and family (especially more conservative ones!): https://northwestupsych.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3r3jgp1f2oqDJNc ** One of my most popular guests, Mark Karris (episode 45: "Toxic Christianity" & Its Damaging Claims), returns to talk about his book Religious Refugees. Specifically, we talk through the five symptoms of what he calls Religious Disorientation Growth Syndrome, as well as 5 possible ways forward toward re-orientation. Doubting or denying one’s religious beliefs that were once held as true. 2. Subtle or intense anxiety about a person’s relationship with God.  3. Is the Enneagram Real? (#101)
02:11:52
To celebrate 100 episodes -- that is, 101 episodes -- my friends join me to talk about a subject that everyone else seems to love a lot more than I do: the Enneagram! The 5 of us, 4 short of the holy number of 9 (myself, Sarey Martin Concepcion, Myron Penner, Sarah Lane Ritchie, and Tripp Fuller), take various positions on the Enneagram and have a lively debate/discussion about its usefulness (or not) and the extent to which is accurately maps onto reality. This is more of a fun, alcohol-soaked, lighthearted episode than we’re used to with YHP, and I think it is all the more special on that account. A History of Conspiracy Theories & Evangelicals (#100)
01:38:02
I’m joined by Dr. Sam Perry to discuss the tangled historical web of White Evangelicals in the US and their use of and affiliation for various conspiracy theories, starting in the 1950 around “outside agitators” in the Civil Rights movement. Sam traces through lines all the way up to Donald Trump, hitting the Moral Majority, Pat Robertson, Tim LaHaye/Left Behind, Obama, and birtherism along the way. We also get some historical context for many conspiracy theories that we were taught in Evangelical households growing up: the Satanic panic, New Age denunciations, the “gay agenda,” anti-Catholic sentiment, and more. We talk about parallel institutions within Evangelicalism and their distribution role in disseminating certain conspiracy theories. It was a lot to cover, and more could be said about almost every issue that came up, but I think listeners will find it helpful (and even entertaining) nonetheless. Sam’s article on The Conversation: https://theconversation.com/amp/evangelical-leaders-like-billy-graham-and-jerry-falwell-sr-have-long-talked-of-conspiracies-against-gods-chosen-those-ideas-are-finding-resonance-today-132241 Why Are Christians Succeptible to Conspiracy Theories?: https://www.abc.net.au/religion/why-are-christians-susceptible-to-conspiracy-theories/13003550 The American Life "The Problem We All Live With": https://www.thisamericanlife.org/562/the-problem-we-all-live-with-part-one Rhetorics of Race and Religion on the Christian Right: https://www.amazon.com/Rhetorics-Race-Religion-Christian-Right-ebook/dp/B081LMTKFZ Edited by Josh Gilbert (joshgilbertmedia@gmail.com -- he is accepting more work!) I Don't Believe in that God: Natalie Schepman (Joseph) (#99)
02:11:30
Natalie Schepman of the band Joseph joins Dan for the latest in the “I Don’t Believe In That God” series, where Dan talks with folks do not consider themselves to be theists/Christians with the aim of getting to the bottom of what precisely they do not believe (in a non-evangelistic way). At the end of the conversation, the two compare their views and explore various areas where they agree/disagree. This conversation was delightful, full of laughs, and incisive. After the episode, a 10-minute clip from the most recent patron-exclusive episode is also included (1:59:00). Emergency Pod: Processing the Capitol Insurrection with John Van Deusen
01:38:42
John and I were scheduled to record a patron-exclusive episode today, a follow-up to our previous episode. We didn’t feel that that conversation was possible to have, given our strong feelings and need to process what we witnessed yesterday on the news as thousands of Trump-led supporters rioted and broke into the Capitol building. We hope our processing is helpful for your own processing! We discuss our reactions and emotions around Trumpist Christians, Christian nationalism, repentance, grief, conversion and testimonies, prayer, deep narratives given to me during my Evangelical upbringing, and more. How Do Autistic Christians Relate to God? (#98)
01:21:14
Budding autistic theologian Erin Burnett joins Dan to talk about her undergraduate thesis (Europe is slightly different, and Dan misspoke in the episode calling it a master’s thesis), which looked at the unique ways that autistic Christians understand and experience God. Erin finds that progressive Christianity tends to sit better with many autistic Christians, including herself, and — get this — she thinks there is ample evidence that St. Paul himself was autistic. https://autismfaithnetwork.com/ Erin's blog post, "The Ramblings of an Autistic Christian": http://erinburnettauthor.co.uk/ramblings-autistic-christian/ Erin's dissertation: https://www.tandfonline.com/eprint/TJGEAKSI6NKPCGDHINTR/full?target=10.1080%2F1756073X.2020.1850402&fbclid=IwAR3oYRKjPO8cepnr-eoE5HJ-jJZjePASVpYt9tK025BAI6dIFBJ1yyYz8f0 Follow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/ Or Twitter: https://twitter.com/DanKoch Edited by Josh Gilbert (joshgilbertmedia@gmail.com -- he is accepting more work!) From Addict to Addictions Counselor (#97)
01:30:24
Jed Payne, host of the Church & Other Drugs Podcast, shares his story of serious lifelong drug addiction, how he ended up an addictions counselor, as well as some of the psychological tactics those counselors use to help addicts toward recovery. Specifically, “motivational interviewing” is a common approach Jed uses in his work, and Dan has recently been learning and practicing MI as part of his own psych education. This fairly practical conversation takes place in front of a theological backdrop which considers the utilization of social science and social services to be spiritually significant, taking advantages of the gifts and resources of people, institutions, and governments to make our world look more like the Kingdom of God on earth. The first in a series of conversations with musicians who have had some experiences with “Christian Music,” whatever that ultimately means. Today we are celebrating the launch of Sarey Martin Concepcion and I’s web resource soyouredeconstructing.com! I’m joined by Sarey, Sarah Lane Ritchie, Myron Penner and Tripp Fuller. Make sure to check out the sillier companion episode to this that is also airing today as on the Homebrewed Christianity Podcast feed, where Tripp, Sarey, Mason Mennenga and I compete in an Evangelical Fantasy Draft while consuming multiple beverages (and you can even vote on who has the best team!). Church Failure, Church Future (#92)
01:24:56
Dan talks with Tony Jones about the failures of the Emerging Church movement, of which he was a central part, and what’s going on today with churches in America. How might they thrive in the future? Are there any signs that they will make necessary changes? What happens to churches after Covid? Why do gay-affirming people stay in non-affirming churches? What role does church actually play in people’s lives? Why didn’t the Emerging Church leaders pass the baton to the next generation? What is going on today with the “Nones” and “Spiritual but not Religious”? These and many other interesting questions are batted around, and Tony is a very fun interview. Election Special: Persecuted Christians, Mask-less Worship Gatherings & QAnon
01:14:06
...in which in lieu of a new YHP episode, we feature friend of the podcast Jon Ward and his *fantastic* conversation with WORLD Magazine contributors Mindy & Emily Belz. Jon's show notes are below. **** Mindy Belz has been with World Magazine since its founding in 1986. It’s a publication aimed at evangelical Christians, started by her brother in law, Joel Belz. Emily Belz, Mindy’s daughter, is also at World now, and has worked at the New York Daily News and The Indianapolis Star. Mindy has spent 20 years covering the plight of Christians in Iraq and Syria. This is a story that truly did get overlooked: before the U.S. invaded Iraq in 2003, there were about 1 million Christians in Iraq, living out a version of the faith with incredibly ancient roots. Many Christians in that region still speak Aramaic, the tongue that Christ himself spoke. But 17 years later, the Christian community in Iraq has been decimated by violence and intimidation. Only about 100,000 Christians remain there. The faith there has almost become extinct in terms of sheer population size. Mindy and I discuss a little bit how much decisions made, or not made, by the Bush administration, are responsible for that. Mindy’s book on this topic, “They Say We are Infidels: On the Run from from ISIS With Persecuted Christians in the Middle East,” came out in 2015. I recommend it. The suffering of this community there, and in Syria, is tough to comprehend. I first thought of interviewing Mindy when I saw her tweet something last May. It was in response to protests against COVID restrictions. "For 6 yrs I've reported on Christians chased from their homes & churches by ISIS, seen their testimony, steadiness, care for one another. How utterly disheartening to watch the American church come apart in a 10-wk shutdown. They shall be known by their demand for their rights,” she wrote. Mindy’s bigger critique of American Christians is two fold: they have no idea what real religious persecution looks like is one part of it. But she also notes the narrowness of demanding rights to do whatever one wants while disregarding the impact of not wearing masks and distancing on those who are most vulnerable — which is not just the older but also people who are poor and on the margins, those without health insurance who are going to avoid going to the doctor or ER if they get sick until it’s too late. And she contrasts this with a vision of the common good that characterizes Middle East Christians... **** Jon also brings this into conversation with the recent spate of mask-free and non-distanced worship gatherings led most prominently by Sean Feucht. The Christian Movie Industry (#86)
00:59:54
I spoke with Luke Barnett and Vince Masciale, the guys behind the new indy comedy Faith Based, about a pair of misfit buddies who try and make a quick buck by directing a Christian movie and selling it to the fictitious “Christflix” streaming channel. To make their own film, they did quite a bit of market research around the Christian movie industry, so naturally I was interested to talk about that. We also get into other forms of independent faith-based art like the Christian ska and punk scene of the 90’s and 2000’s. This is a breezy, fun conversation by YHP standards, and I really enjoyed it. They each tell their respective stories of infertility and IVF, and various theological and psychological implications of these are discussed, including: the role of neurotransmitter’s in God’s communication to humans, CS Lewis’s idea of Joy as a “foretaste” of the Kingdom of God, Hell, wonder/awe, the multiverse, and more. Hell & Universalism in a Global Context (#84)
02:13:22
When Dr. Greg Cootsona (California State University, Chico) heard a recent episode that touched on the questions of Hell and Universal Salvation, he emailed me almost immediately and mentioned that something was lacking in our treatment of that topic: other religions and perspectives of the span of geography and time. This is especially relevant because doctrines about the afterlife tend to make a lot of claims about people outside the membership of Christianity. Naturally, I invited him back on the show to talk at length about this topic, and indeed we did talk *at length* because it is such a fascinating topic. Other than complimenting me too often (we edited out as many as we could), Greg is a perfect podcast guest! Habit, Virtue, Prayer & Science (#83)
01:20:22
Bradley Wright is a Protestant professor of sociology at the University of Connecticut where he studies American Christianity, spirituality, and well-being. Sofia Corozza is a Catholic phd student at Cambridge studying child neurodevelopment. Also, she is Brad’s goddaughter, which makes for a lovely interplay between the two of them. So why care about habits and virtue? Aren’t these old fashioned notions? Well, habits are very closely linked to positive change of all sorts, and if there is one thing missing at least in our *public* life these days, virtue might top that list. Prayer seems to interact with both of these concepts regularly, and I am always asking: what is the science behind each of these? What do we know and with how much confidence? Who Are the "Spiritual But Not Religious"? (#82)
01:23:00
If you spend any significant time reading or listening to scholars of religion, looking at polling of religious groups, or anything like that, then you have probably heard the term Spiritual But Not Religious thrown out there. This will usually come with a sentence or two of description, something like, people who do not identify with any particular religion, or people who are neither religious nor atheist. But I wanted to go further and better understand this group, not least because many of this show’s listeners find themselves in this category. Another fact often included when the Spiritual but not Religious are mentioned is that they are the fastest growing religious group in America; yet another reason to take a longer peek under the hood. I’m joined by returning guest Terry Shoemaker, who is a researcher and professor of religious studies at Arizona State University. About a year ago he was on the show talking about what he calls culture war Christianity, and there’s a link to that episode in the show notes today if you didn't catch it. In addition to discussing the SBNR, we also talk about the possible future effects of both the pandemic and evangelical support for Trump on American religion. Pastors, Therapist Referrals & Mental Health in the Church (#81)
01:29:24
Short interviews with three pastors in different traditions (Foursquare, Episcopal, and Presbyterian-PCA) about their process of referring congregants to therapists in their area. This is a topic that it seems to me could use some more attention, not least because pastors are in a *perfect* position to help Christians of all stripes get the mental health help that they need when they need it, and most of us will need this kind of help at some point in our lives (whether or not we take that step). We talk about referral practices, finding trustworthy therapists, finding therapists who understand where Christian clients are coming from, pitfalls and possibilities within the church around mental health, a little about some of these pastors’ own therapeutic experiences, and more. My guest (and dear friend) philosopher Myron A. Penner joins me to talk about demons. His position is as follows: 1. Not ruling out their existence 2. Quite skeptical what we could really know about them 3. Somewhat opposed morally, given how they function in human/religious affairs We also talk about the phenomena of increased “possession” in non-Western countries, culture-bound mental health syndromes, the role of expectation in experience, some (I think) helpful concepts from psychologist Richard Beck, and more. End Times Popularity: Part 2 (#78)
00:43:31
Part 2 of a series that addresses the question “Why was End Times/Left Behind/Rapture theology *so popular* by the time we grew up in the 90s and 2000s?” Please start with Part 1, last week’s episode. My main argument: 1. The people whose evangelizing kicked off the Jesus Movement were primarily fundamentalists and they were themselves already very focused on biblical prophecy 2. In the early 70s, there was enough global chaos and uncertainty, along with one very important “fulfilled prophecy” that made it seem plausible that the world might indeed be coming to a close 3. By the time Left Behind came around in the 90s, that same Jesus Movement generation held the primary places of power and influence in Evangelical circles Covered in this episode: - The Jesus Movement generation were the ones with cultural power in the Evangelical world by the time Left Behind came out - A straightforward and literal reading of the Bible is always popular, especially in America, and it plays into a few common American characteristics - Where are they now? All four interviewees relay their current beliefs about the End Times - Sally answers some of the questions the original interview subjects answered in the End Times Anxiety series Follow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/ Edited by Josh Gilbert (joshgilbertmedia@gmail.com -- he is accepting more work!) End Times Popularity: Part 1 (#77)
00:57:58
Earlier this year, I released a 4-part series called End Times Anxiety, chronicling mental health and related challenges of younger folks who had been adversely affected by Left Behind and similar visions of the Rapture and end of the world within conservative Protestant theology and culture. Throughout working on that project, I found myself continually asking myself and others, “Why did they buy it in the first place? How did this thinking become *so popular*?” These two episodes are my attempt at answering that question, pulling from my own review of the available academic research as well as four interviews I conducted with Baby Boomers who had been a part of the Jesus Movement in the 1970s. My main argument is as follows: 1. By the time Left Behind came around in the 90s, that same Jesus Movement generation held the primary places of power and influence in Evangelical circles This is not an exhaustive explanation, but it has helped me come up with a basic framework that helps me make sense of my 90s Left Behind-soaked experience. When Spiritual Heroes are Sexual Predators (Jean Vanier) (#76)
01:41:18
Many of you heard the news about Jean Vanier, founder of L’Arche International and one of my own lifetime spiritual heroes, when it came to light in February that he had sexually abused multiple women under his care as their spiritual director. This was not like Harvey Weinstein -- Vanier was a world-renowned spiritual leader and thinker; he was on his way to sainthood. Jennifer Kelly (former director of L’Arche Seattle, local assistant to Vanier) and my friend Chris Hoke (Underground Ministries) help me unpack this complicated situation. I Don't Believe in that God: Hawk Nelson's Jon Steingard (#75)
01:34:42
Jon Steingard, singer of Contemporary Christian rock band Hawk Nelson, made quite a splash in some Christian circles a couple months back when he announced that he was no longer a Christian and did not believe in God. I was able to talk at least with Jon about his own process, as well as where the two of us actually agree, and where we ultimately differ on God’s existence and attributes. We got into inerrancy, certainty, open theism and the problem of evil and suffering, along with plenty more. Testimonies (#73)
01:49:36
We hear four stories of white Christians coming to see the reality of systemic racial injustice in American society: a Republican corporate attorney and member of the Federalist Society, a pastor’s kid whose sisters work with refugees (one of whom married an African man), a nurse confronting disparities in medical care, and a mother thinking through her own history and wanting to give her daughter something better. To acknowledge the problem of systemic racial injustice is not the same as to endorse some particular lens through which to view it (like Critical Race Theory) nor some particular policy over another (like reparations, affirmative action, or implicit bias training). This episode is about the process of coming to an awareness of these injustices. What Comes After a Racial Awakening? (#69)
01:46:40
One thing that I am really encouraged by amidst all the protest and civil unrest is how many white people seem to have genuinely woken up to the presence of systemic racism in American society. But what comes AFTER that moment, specifically from a faith perspective? In terms of theology, prayer, church, and seeing ourselves as part of God’s story more broadly, what might be some next steps, ripple effects, etc? I’m joined by Jason Davison and Sarah Lane Ritchie to think and talk through this question. Listening (#68)
01:03:24
Black Americans and other people of color are understandably exhausted right now, so what better time to pull something out of the vault that speaks to our current moment? In 2017, on my old Depolarize! Podcast, I interviewed 5 Christians of color about their experience growing up non-white in America, as well as a number of issues related to Evangelicalism and politics. I’m happy to say that the idea that a largely white audience should spend time simply listening to stories like this *feels* more widely accepted today than it did in 2017. Nonetheless, there is always more listening to be done, and these are some powerful stories. https://8cantwait.org/ http://theandcampaign.com https://thewitnessbcc.com/ Pass the Mic Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/pass-the-mic/id1435500798 Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankoch Email about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: youhavepermissionpodcast@gmail.com YHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98 Website: youhavepermissionpod.com Join Dan's email list: dankochwords.com Artwork by http://sprungle.co/

Sexual Shame (#67)

Dan is joined by author and podcaster Matthias Roberts to talk about his new book Beyond Shame and the topic of sexual shame more broadly. His own story sheds interesting light on this topic because, as a gay person, Matthias found himself feeling sexual shame over heterosexual images and potential activities that he did not find sexually alluring at all. If sexual shame can be produced without actual sexual desire as an ingredient, what does that tell us about it? Also, Dan reveals more about his own sexuality and sex life than he planned to because that is just how warm and engaging Matthias is! Young Americans’ Views on Science & Faith (#66)
01:34:06
What do younger Americans (18-30 year olds) think about science, faith, and the relationship between them? Which issues “count” as “science/faith” issues? You might be surprised at some of the answers to these questions. The Prosperity Gospel of Health (#65)
01:34:33
Many of us are aware of what is meant by the “wealth” part of the “Health and Wealth” prosperity gospel: donate to this to ministry and receive tenfold back from God; God wants you to be successful and happy; “enlarge my territory” a la the Prayer of Jabez… But what about the “health” part? Author Stephanie Tait (The View from Rock Bottom) joins me to tell her own story of chronic undiagnosed illness, multiple miscarriages, unhelpful theology from other Christians, meeting God in her suffering, and advocating for recipients of injustice. The Hell Anxiety Scale (#64)
01:11:13
This week, I speak with two sociologists of religion, Joseph Leman and Stephen Cranney, about the Hell Anxiety Scale that they developed, as well as the academic study of the overlap of psychology and religion more broadly, what other research around this topic has revealed, how they pursue this work as people of faith themselves, and whether it’s possible to be confident BOTH that there is a Hell AND that you yourself are heading there. My guest Jessica Knippel is a PhD student in Women & Religion at Claremont Graduate School, and has been researching the Exvangelical / Post-Evangelical world. I was curious to talk with her about what she and other colleagues have learned about this massive exodus of mostly young people out of the American Evangelical movement, as well as figuring out where I myself and where this podcast stands among that contingent. Fine-Tuning & the Multiverse (#61)
00:52:40
Dan is joined by Methodist minister and astrophysicist David Wilkinson, professor of theology at Durham University and member of the Royal Astronomical Society. They talk about the so-called “fine-tuning” of our universe, the “anthropic principle” / “goldilocks enigma,” and multiverse theory as a common non-theist rejoinder for theistic arguments for God’s existence based on this fine-tuning. Whether or not the multiverse can be “proven,” does it even work as a counterargument, or does it “kick the can down the road” in some way? This issue is one of the ones that pushes me toward theism and away from atheism and agnosticism, but even if it doesn’t do that for you, it seems very much worth thinking about. Why I Am (Still) a Christian (#60)
01:42:42
I’m joined by my dear friend Ben Bishop, who is both a fantastic interviewer in his own right and a former patron-only episode guest. I asked Ben to interview me on the topic of why I am (still) a Christian. No one ever asks me, “Why are you a Christian?” Or very rarely, anyway. But pretty regularly, in the context of conversations about deconstruction or Biblical inerrancy or something similar, people will ask, “Why are you *still* a Christian?” I thought it might be helpful to answer that and give one more data point for listeners as they figure out their own faith allegiances, theologies, etc. We talk about religious/Christian pluralism a good bit, as that is particularly interesting to Ben, and toward the end is when I give probably my most succinct answer to the question, drawing on the Sermon on the Mount, the Lord’s Prayer, and other basics I don’t think I could live without. Feel free to skip forward to 1:15:00 or so if you want to hear that concise answer before going into the weeds with us. Coronavirus & The Problem of Evil (#59)
02:18:46
Dan is joined by philosopher Myron Penner (Trinity Western University) and theologian Sarah Lane Ritchie (University of Edinburgh) to talk through all things Coronavirus and the Problem of Evil (mostly the “Natural Problem of Evil” but not exclusively). They discuss some interesting angles on this discussion, as well as numerous “solutions” on offer by Christian thinkers. Myron brings in some cognitive science and Sarah brings a focus on the lived experience of suffering. Soul-making, “life is a gift,” “it’s because of the Fall,” and more approaches are discussed. The Cosmic / Universal Christ (#58)
01:47:46
This somewhat winding conversation with Dr. Tripp Fuller (Homebrewed Christianity Podcast) swirls around the concept of the Cosmic Christ, also known as the Universal Christ. Tripp and I attempt to answer four questions: Why attach the name Christ to Jesus in the first place? Why use the term "Cosmic" Christ? (What is that supposed to mean or signify?) How has the phrase "Cosmic" changed given evolution, the age of the universe, and modern science? Finally, how has the concept "Christ" changed as a result of what humanity has learned since the days of early Christianity? We also try out a few definitions of the term along the way. We Are Italy: Coronavirus & Science-Informed Faith
01:02:10
I took a break from my every-other-week break with our newborn to have a conversation with one of the smartest people I know, Robbie Evans, a strategic director at a medical diagnostics company in Silicon Valley. He put together a Google Doc (linked below -- read first if you can) about some real and scary possibilities and likely projections for the US and COVID-19. This is not a time for (arbitrary) theological platitudes and claims about God and global diseases; rather, it is a time for a science-informed faith that helps us to best love our neighbors as ourselves. Consequently, most of this episode is spent on what we know from the best and most current data and projections. Stay safe, and stay home as much as you possibly can! Wrapping Our Faith in Doubt (#57)
01:26:38
We often think of our doubts as counting *against* our faith: if we have enough reasons to believe in the “faith” column, then that will be enough to discount all the problems in the “doubts” column. But what if true modern faith will always include doubts? What if the presence of certain kinds of doubt actually shows that we are doing things right? Liberal Christianity's Origin Story (#56)
01:20:52
it isn't as nerdy as it sounds, but... I spoke with Reverend Doctor Catherine Kelsey about the beginnings of what today we would call liberal Christianity, through the work of the theologian Friedrich Schleiermacher. His way of thinking about the experience of faith has really been resonating with me lately, and Cathie wrote a great simple book about that topic. She is also quite pastoral, and I was surprised how healing and challenging our conversation ended up being. Since the baby has not arrived yet, I was able to put a little something together in between formal episodes! This originally aired as a patron-exclusive episode, and was received so well that I thought it might be worth sharing with everyone on an off-week like this. Fellow Seattle Jim becker and I discuss his own story, why he now considers himself an atheist, what kind of God it is exactly that he does not believe in, and how our own views overlap and diverge. It was a really great conversation, and I believe will be the first in a “I Don’t Believe In That God” series, split up between the patron-only feed and the main podcast feed. Evil, Hell, & Evidence for God at a Christian College (#54)
01:31:52
Dan sits down with friend and philosopher Matthew Benton (Seattle Pacific University) to talk through five common questions that come up commonly with undergraduate students at his Christian university: - How could a loving God send anyone to Hell? - Why is there so much religious diversity if one religion is (most) true? - If there is a loving God, why is there so much evil and suffering in the world? - Why isn't there stronger evidence for God's existence? - What are the right ways to interpret the Bible? End Times Anxiety: Part 1 (#50)
01:03:24
What better way to celebrate 50 episodes of YHP than to kick off a 4-part series on so-called “End Times” teaching/theology and mental health? As part of early research toward my doctoral dissertation in psychology, I conducted 20 interviews in August of 2019, collecting personal stories about how popular Christian notions of the End Times, like the Rapture, Tribulation, and the Left Behind series, affected people’s faith, theology, life trajectories, and overall mental health. This is Part 1 of 4, and it focuses on the basics, including what most Evangelicals understood would happen in the End Times, some of the ways that fear, anxiety and depression were tied up with it for many people, the connection between the end times, Hell, and salvation, a sense of a robbed childhood, mental health predispositions, family conflicts, and more. The Psychology of Religious Fundamentalism (Re-broadcast)
01:36:58
During the holiday break, I'm choosing two lesser-downloaded or well-timed episodes for re-airing. Many of us are still, or have just been, spending time with family members who are fundamentalists, or lean that way, and that can be really hard sometimes. Original show notes: “Fundamentalist” has become a theological swear word. But how does it work psychologically? Why hasn’t it “gone away”? How do religious fundamentalists make sense of their world and find meaning in their lives? And what might this tell us about non-religious fundamentalists? Psychologist Peter Hill joins Dan to talk through the model he and his co-authors developed in their book The Psychology of Religious Fundamentalism (link below). Is Everything Within God? (Re-broadcast)
01:30:34
During the holiday break, I'm choosing two lesser-downloaded episodes for re-airing. This conversation with Philip Clayton about Panentheism (and a few other things) was fantastic, but I think maybe the thick theological terminology might have turned some would-be listeners away. Also, Phil is coming back on the podcast in the coming month or two to talk about doubt, and this is a nice precursor to that upcoming conversations. Original post: Our guest today is Dr. Philip Clayton (Claremont School of Theology), giving us his personal faith story from a secular household, through conservative Evangelicalism, and ultimately into Quakerism. We also talk about Panentheism, for which he is a major Christian advocate. The Cave is a gift that keeps on giving (holiday-appropriate!), through various stages of growth, deconstruction, reconstruction, and on and on. Dan and Patrick discuss implications for Christians thinking through hard questions, and a lot more. Who’s Afraid of Evolutionary Psychology? (#47)
01:38:39
As it turns out, both conservatives AND liberals, depending who you talk to. But is it a valid field of research, and what do we learn about human nature from evolutionary psychology? Dan also talks with Dr. Justin Barrett (Fuller Seminary) about so-called “cultural evolution,” where the evolution of humanity moves at a much more rapid pace, and through the dissemination of information, values, stories, etc, rather than through genetic mutation and selection. And of course, they discuss what implications all of this might have for theology and Christian practice. Looking for God in the Future, Not the Past (#46)
01:35:24
Dan is joined by philosopher John Haught (Georgetown University), who argues that many people think we should look to the past, the deep past, for ultimate answers. This includes certain scientists who want to look to the Big Bang for ultimate explanations, or religious teachers focusing on God’s perfect design in the Garden of Eden, before everything got messed up. Others might tend to look to the so-called Eternal Present for God, or for ultimate meaning and answers. Through prayer, we may feel like we can tap directly into a timeless God, letting go of our worldly concerns, and, of course, there is some truth to this. Many philosophers have also preached something similar, that true contemplation of the One, or of capital “T” Truth, can take us out of our mortal, perishing bodies into the realm of the sublime. But Haught wants to point our attention to a third option: the future. What if the truest meaning of the grand story that we are living in right now, which includes a big bang, billions of years of lifeless space, followed by the forming of carbon, then of unicellular life, and biological progression all the way to sentient and self-conscious beings like humans -- what if the meaning of THAT story is not clear to us yet because that story is not over yet? Perhaps we do have some guideposts given to us by God along the way, but rather than looking back, we should be looking AHEAD. "Toxic Christianity" & Its Damaging Claims (#45)
01:41:44
“Human beings are primarily intrinsically sinful and evil.” “God’s truth can only be found in the Biblical text.” “The body and its desires are inherently wicked.” “Emotions are not to be honored and listened to; only God’s truth should be valued.” Mark Karris (author, therapist, professor at Point Loma Nazarene University) lists these among a group of claims that he believes are a part of “Toxic Christianity.” Mark and Dan talk through a number of these (false) claims, ask why it is that they get in the way of our relationship to God and our neighbors, and consider alternate options. Christian Naturalism / Physicalism (#44)
01:37:13
Can Christians believe that people are only “physical”? Must we have “souls” in order to be saved, to have relationships with God, to be God’s image-bearers in the world? My two guests today are biologist Kenneth R. Miller (Brown University) and philosopher Rebekah Rice (Seattle Pacific University), and they argue that there are good reasons to accept some kind of Christian Naturalism or Christian Physicalism, and that in fact one can do so and remain within the orthodx Christian tradition. The Argument for Universal Salvation (#43)
01:26:55
This is the episode that some of you have been waiting 40-some episodes for. Many of you know that I identify as a universalist, meaning that I believe that everyone will be saved in the end, whatever we mean by the word “saved.” There are a lot of reasons that people believe in Hell, and there are a lot of reasons that people don’t. Many of those reasons, maybe even MOST of the reasons, I would argue have nothing to do with actual arguments or theological reasoning, or even a close reading of the Biblical text. Most reasons, I think, are psychological. Why people ACTUALLY believe in Hell, at a more psychological level, is a very interesting question, but not one that we are spending much time on today. This episode is about the arguments themselves. The most central question is: Does Hell make sense, given the God of Christianity? The next one is - how do we make sense of various sayings of Jesus that seem to teach a painful judgement? My guest today is Brad Jersak. Brad is a Canadian theologian, author, and pastor, and his book “Her Gates Will Never Be Shut” is widely considered one of the best treatments of this question. Our first 15 min or so are spent getting our bearings with the current landscape on this topic, including some term explaining, and introducing David Bentley Hart’s new book as a centerpiece of both our conversation, and the wider theological conversation. If you want to go straight to the arguments themselves, you could skip ahead to about 18:00. Is the “Supernatural” Actually Just Natural? (#42)
01:39:38
Just in time for Halloween (not on purpose actually!)... What exactly is the "supernatural"? When God does something in the natural world, is that the same thing as saying that God broke the laws of physics? Theologian Thomas Jay oord helps Dan explore these questions, and whether or not it makes more sense to think of the “natural” and “supernatural” as essentially no different from one another. Or in Tom’s words, “For every event that happens in the world, there are both divine and creaturely causes.” They consider some possible ramifications of this move, including the resurrection of Jesus, miracles, the inspiration of Scripture, the life to come, and more. Cognitive Science & Religious Belief (For Beginners) (#41)
01:21:44
Philosopher Myron Penner (Trinity Western University) helps Dan think through some interesting but complicated and challenging findings from cognitive science (the study of the mind, not the study of the brain -- that's called neuroscience) and what they mean for our understanding of religions beliefs, behaviors and experiences. By explaining religious belief from a cognitive perspective, how does cognitive science of religion not *explain away* religion altogether? Does cognitive science of religion present evidence for God, for atheism, or neither? - “When God Talks Back” - https://smile.amazon.com/When-God-Talks-Back-Understanding/dp/0307277275/ref=sxts_sxwds-bia?keywords=when+god+talks+back&pd_rd_i=0307277275&pd_rd_r=eda4ec56-9673-42b7-bdb8-d6faeaa93daa&pd_rd_w=jfc0X&pd_rd_wg=PM7eF&pf_rd_p=a5491838-6a74-484e-8787-eb44c8f3b7ff&pf_rd_r=GA0N6HXQHCG8MZNJ3RE6&psc=1&qid=1571604451 - Citizens - “Fear” (Spotify): https://open.spotify.com/album/0abL7FZysjxpaxEPURpBsl - theopsych.com - Fuller Seminary initiative Edited by Laura Kondourajian Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankoch YHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98 Website: youhavepermissionpod.com Join Dan's email list: dankochwords.com Artwork by http://sprungle.co/

Faith Changes & Marriage, Family, Kids, Divorce and Dating (#40)
01:50:38
How do we parent our kids after faith deconstruction? What if only one half of a couple is going through faith changes? Can people of different faith traditions have healthy marriages? How do I relate to my family, who haven’t had the same faith changes that I have, and who now think I’m going to Hell? Is this what “unequally yoked” is actually supposed to mean? This is a long, meaty episode, where we get into as many questions like these as possible (asked almost entirely by listeners of the show) with Dr. Doug Shirley, a psychotherapist who teaches at the Seattle School of Theology & Psychology and specializes in questions like these in his own private practice. dougshirleyresearch.com Holy Longing: https://smile.amazon.com/Holy-Longing-Search-Christian-Spirituality-ebook/dp/B004DEPESM/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=holy+longing&qid=1570899882&sr=8-1 Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work: https://smile.amazon.com/Seven-Principles-Making-Marriage-Work/dp/0553447718/ref=sr_1_1?crid=9XGS9DL4PJFO&keywords=seven+principles+for+making+marriage+work&qid=1570899898&sprefix=seven+principles%2Caps%2C197&sr=8-1 Finite and Infinite Games: https://smile.amazon.com/Finite-Infinite-Games-James-Carse/dp/1476731713/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1N9D2WRINZTQJ&keywords=finite+and+infinite+games+by+james+carse&qid=1570899926&sprefix=finite+and%2Caps%2C195&sr=8-1 The Sin of Certainty: https://smile.amazon.com/Sin-Certainty-Desires-Correct-Beliefs/dp/0062272098/ref=sr_1_1?crid=SZU6J7FT9FDZ&keywords=sin+of+certainty&qid=1570899914&sprefix=sin+of+cer%2Caps%2C193&sr=8-1 Edited by Josh Gilbert (Gwall.Gilbert11@gmail.com) Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankoch YHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98 Website: youhavepermissionpod.com Join Dan's email list: dankochwords.com Artwork by http://sprungle.co/

Psychedelics & Other "Spiritual Technologies" (#39)
01:17:04
Why is everyone suddenly talking about psychedelic drugs again? What do we know about them, and what is their relationship to more “ordinary” religious experiences? Is taking a psychedelic as part of a worship service any different than dimming the lights and swaying together to worship music? What can we learn about human brains and religious experience in general from the research on psychedelics? Today we hear from theologian Sarah Lane Ritchie, who both works on these questions from a theological perspective and also has been a participant in a controlled psilocybin trial in the UK. And yes, she tells us about her trip! Later in our chat, she shares her personal struggles with experiencing God as “personal” in the way that so many of her friends and colleagues are able to do (myself included). This was an incredible conversation. Sarah is Lecturer in Theology and Science at the University of Edinburgh. She has a PhD in Science and Religion from the University of Edinburgh, where her doctoral work focused on the question of divine action in the human mind. A Michigander by birth, Sarah also holds a BA in Philosophy and Religion from Spring Arbor University, an MDiv from Princeton Theological Seminary, and an MSc in Science and Religion from the University of Edinburgh. Her published work focuses on questions arising from the intersection of theology, philosophy, and the various brain-related sciences. To Trust Your Experience (Dustin Kensrue) (#38)
01:29:25
Is experience potentially a direct pathway to the God of the universe? Or is it simply “the heart [being] deceitful above all things”? Can we trust our spiritual experience, and if so, which experiences are trustworthy? This topic was recommended by my guest Dustin Kensrue (singer/songwriter of the band Thrice, former worship director at Mars Hill Church in Seattle), and I jumped at it. In today’s episode, we go through Dustin’s own story, from young Christian punk rocker, to prominent Neo-Calvinist, to church scandal whistleblower (sort of), to reconstructed liberal Christian, all the while considering the role of experience in that journey. What Comes After Purity Culture? (#37)
01:46:12
What exactly is “purity culture,” and why is everyone talking about it? Was it really so harmful? Isn’t it pretty straightforward to not have sex until marriage? Today’s guest Linda Key Klein has interviewed hundreds of young women about their experiences in and after purity culture, and she has written a fantastic book about it, “Pure: Inside the Evangelical Movement That Shamed a Generation of Young Women and How I Broke Free.” But also, what comes AFTER purity culture? Simply an “anything goes” sexual ethic, or something more robust and still identifiably "Christian"? Evolution Myths & Long Lifespans in Genesis (#36)
01:39:20
Darwin’s theory of evolution by common descent is so widely agreed upon by scientists that it is either the best explanation we have for the origins of life on this planet, or else it is a massive conspiracy involving millions of people. It is also, according to some Christians, a dangerous theory that undercuts basic claims of Christianity. Sometimes these Christians, working through organizations that promote Young Earth Creationism or Intelligent Design, spread misconceptions about Darwin’s theory, either mistakenly or on purpose. Jim Stump, philosopher and Vice President of Biologos, counters these misconceptions with data and scientific explanations. After putting these myths to bed, Jim and Dan move on to the perplexing fact that the book of Genesis seems quite cavalierly to suggest that many people lived between 600 and 900 years of age -- what is this about, and what are some possible ways of reading or thinking about it? Later, Jim helps Dan answer a listener question: “How do you understand the Bible as pre-scientific? For example, stories like David and Bathsheba, where the child is born and ‘struck by God’ rather than the child simply fell ill.” (1:13:30) DNA article: https://biologos.org/common-questions/can-evolution-generate-new-information “10 Myths about Evolution” article: https://biologos.org/articles/10-misconceptions-about-evolution The Biologos podcast Language of God - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/language-of-god/id1451956029 Jim’s author page at biologos.org - https://biologos.org/people/jim-stump Edited by Josh Gilbert (Gwall.Gilbert11@gmail.com) Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankoch YHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98 Website: youhavepermissionpod.com Join Dan's email list: dankochwords.com Artwork by http://sprungle.co/

01:43:20
Today’s guest is Peter Wehner -- Vice President and Senior Fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, contributing opinion writer for the New York Times, and a contributing editor for The Atlantic magazine. He served in the Reagan and George H.W. Bush Administrations prior to becoming deputy director of speechwriting for President George W. Bush, and is one of the more prominent “NeverTrump Conservatives.” Peter has recently given up his membership in the GOP over their increasing identification with Trump. He and Dan talk about Trump and Evangelicals’ very public romance, and what that might say about the efficacy of Evangelical Christian faith. Peter also makes his case for a politically engaged Christianity, over and against a more Anabaptist-style detachment or principled uninvolvement/pacifism. To Deny a Historical Adam & Eve (#33)
01:19:42
The question of whether or not Adam and Eve were historical figures is a hotly debated topic in some circles of Christianity -- especially more Reformed and/or conservative circles -- and completely ignored in others. But there are a lot of consequences to this question, no matter where you fall theologically. Physicist and Science & Religion veteran Karl Giberson joins Dan to talk through the issue, and what he learned while working on his book “Saving the Original Sinner.” Karl’s book: https://smile.amazon.com/Saving-Original-Sinner-Christians-Oppress/dp/0807012513/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=saving+the+original+sinner&qid=1566844147&s=gateway&sr=8-1 BARNA research mentioned: https://biologos.org/articles/a-survey-of-clergy-and-their-views-on-origins Edited by Joe Diaz-Romero Join the Patreon for bonus episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankoch YHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98 Website: youhavepermissionpod.com Join Dan's email list: dankochwords.com Artwork by http://sprungle.co/

To Give Reformed Theology a Fair Hearing (#32)
01:33:14
A lot of us have been pretty burned in Reformed Christian communities, which might go by names like Presbyterian, Bible Church, Baptist, and more, all of which stem in one way or another from the teachings of John Calvin. But not all Reformed thinkers read John Piper and R.C. Sproul, or believe that women shouldn’t become preachers, and SOME Reformed thinkers are even Universalists when it comes to salvation! Dan is joined by a very clear thinker who thinks that the Reformed tent needs to be widened: analytic theologian (and Reformed guy himself) Oliver Crisp (University of St. Andrews, Scotland). So let’s give Reformed theology a fair hearing, shall we? Today’s interview was made possible as part of the TheoPsych Project, hosted by Fuller Seminary’s office of Science, Theology, and Religion: Theopsych.com Olivers two books (Saving Calvinism and Deviant Calvinism): https://smile.amazon.com/Saving-Calvinism-Expanding-Reformed-Tradition/dp/0830851755/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=oliver+crisp&qid=1566088780&s=gateway&sr=8-2 https://smile.amazon.com/Deviant-Calvinism-Broadening-Reformed-Theology/dp/1451486138/ref=sr_1_10?keywords=oliver+crisp&qid=1566088780&s=gateway&sr=8-10 Edited by Laura Kondourajian Join the Patreon for bonus episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankoch YHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98 Website: youhavepermissionpod.com Join Dan's email list: dankochwords.com Artwork by http://sprungle.co/

What Counts as Prayer? (#31)
01:49:32
Can silent meditation be prayer? Is prayer always in some sense bodily and physical, or is it only a spiritual thing? When did prayer first enter the story of humanity — millions of years ago, or only after verbal language? Did Neanderthals pray? Is it worth looking into the prayer practices of other religions, and if we do, what might we learn? These questions and more are explored with Dr. Carol Zaleski (Smith College), co-author of the incredible book “Prayer: A History.” Later, Dan answers a listener question: “What are the mental tricks or ways that you seek to understand or empathize with someone’s viewpoint you disagree with?” (1:32:00) Dan’s 4 mental tricks: Trick 1 -- system 1 or 2 belief? If 1, let it go, and just be kind; show them that people with your opposite belief can be loving; and remind yourself that they will probably only change their mind if they change their tribe. In this case, it’s better to ask general life questions than to drill down on the specific area of disagreement or original interest. Trick 2 -- if system 2, start asking more specific questions, learn their story as it relates to the issue. Trick 3 -- remind yourself that you are also a member of various tribes, so you can let your guard down as you listen to them. Trick 4 -- look for nuance; if you are finding it, you're on the right track; if there is none, you are probably stuck in mostly pointless tribal warfare. To Question the Canaanite Conquest & Divine Violence (#30)
01:53:54
Did God really command the complete slaughter of everyone living in the Promised Land (men, women and children)? Would a loving God ever allow Israelite soldiers to take on additional wives as war widows (if they found them attractive and if they proved themselves to be sexually pleasing)? For 2,000 years, Christian thinkers and Biblical scholars have wrestled with difficult Old Testament passages that seem to show a violent and unloving God, one that seems to contrast sharply with other descriptions of God in the OT. Dr. Eric Seibert joins Dan to talk through this landscape of passages and problems, and to explain 14 distinct approaches that Christians have taken in dealing with them. Later, Dan answers a listener question: “What do you think of the whole #emptythepews movement?” (1:42:00) Eric’s book (The Violence of Scripture): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0800698258/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_hsch_vapi_taft_p1_i1 Nuclear Taboo article: https://news.stanford.edu/2017/08/08/americans-weigh-nuclear-war/ Edited by Scott Cangemi Join the Patreon for bonus episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankoch YHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98 Website: youhavepermissionpod.com Join Dan's email list: dankochwords.com Artwork by http://sprungle.co/

To Be Egalitarian / Ordain Women (#29)
02:12:16
One of the most divisive questions in the modern church is whether or not biological sex plays a role in who should be allowed to preach (and there are other issues wrapped up in this one, like whether women should be primary bread-winners, etc). Egalitarians say, “No, let the women preach!” Complementarians say, “Yes, men only; that is how God set things up.” In this episode, we hear from Dan’s Godmother Barb Clark, who is an elder in an Egalitarian church, but has some nagging concerns about the whole thing. Then the bulk of the episode is spent with Rev. Bonnie Lewis, a pastor, teacher and Bible translator, who not only makes her argument for Egalitarianism, but also responds to many of the most common counter arguments from the Contemplentarian side. Finally, we get Barb’s reaction to Dan’s chat with Bonnie. This one is a doozy! To Trust Science (#28)
01:30:46
Why is there a (perceived) conflict between science and religion, and has it always been that way? How does science actually get done, and is the scientific method and community set up in such a way as to come up with trustworthy claims? Are young Christians being set up to fail by well-meaning teachers who are skeptical of “mainstream” science? Dan is joined by Adrian Wyard of Counterblance.org to talk through all of this; before that, he hears from his friend Andy, an Evangelical pastor, about what he is and isn’t suspicious of in the world of science. To Embrace Uncertainty (#27)
01:51:50
Is it possible to be certain about anything in one’s Christian faith? Is it possible to be certain about anything at all, like math, science, or the love of a spouse? Why does it often seem moreseo like preachers and Christian authors are peddling certainty than they are encouraging genuine faith? (The same could also be said for the “New Atheists.”) What does genuine faith look like in a world full of baked-in uncertainty? Dan’s guest Mark Schaefer, author of “The Certainty of Uncertainty,” provides some excellent commentary on this society-wide issue. https://www.certaintyofuncertainty.com/ Edited by Laura Kondourajian Join the Patreon for bonus episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankoch YHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98 Website: youhavepermissionpod.com Join Dan's email list: dankochwords.com Artwork by http://sprungle.co/

To Acknowledge Your Feelings Around Race (#26)
01:40:34
Dan is joined for a long afternoon of somewhat experimental podcasting by Christopher Carter and Seth Schoen, who together have developed a very interesting group/individual practice (and they teach a class together about it), using meditative practices and psychology to talk about, think through, and FEEL their way through racial issues, questions, and personal histories. It is, in fact, as interesting and unique as it sounds! In the middle of the conversation, Dan offers to go through a short "session" with them, which produces some interesting results as well. We all have feelings about racial issues, whether we attend to them or not. Later on, the three of them have a somewhat difficult, honest, and ultimately clarifying conversation about critical race theory, and some concerns surrounding the way that race is talked about in American society. To Stay In Your Church/Denomination (#25)
01:30:38
While of course there are times when it makes sense to leave one’s religious institution, today Dan and sociologist of religion Dr. Tricia Bruce make the case for staying. What is lost when people leave their churches or denominations? When they leave the church altogether? How much do they unintentionally reduce their potential impact? How have a group of concerned Catholics worked from within the Church to combat sexual abuse? Later, Dan answers a listener question: “In your opinion, what are the requirements for being considered a Christian?” (1:20:00) https://triciabruce.com/ “Orthodoxy” patron-only episode with Ben Bishop: https://www.patreon.com/posts/21074279 Edited by Josh Gilbert (Gwall.Gilbert11@gmail.com) Join the Patreon for bonus episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankoch YHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98 Website: youhavepermissionpod.com Join Dan's email list: dankochwords.com Artwork by http://sprungle.co/

To Go To Therapy (#24)
02:06:00
Should Christians go to "regular" therapists, or is "Biblical Counseling" the only option available to a Christian? Do therapists encourage Christian couples to divorce unnecessarily? Is it shameful to see a therapist? This week, we hear from Howard, a therapy skeptic, and then from Jonathan, whose positive experience with therapy led him ultimately to a master's program to become a psychologist himself. To Be a Postmodern Christian (#23)
01:53:56
...and still love the Bible! Thomas Jay Oord joins Dan to discuss the issue of postmodernism and the Bible (through the lens of a fantastic article by Old Testament scholar Terence Fretheim, which Tom himself edited). How does a postmodern Christian's reading of the Bible differ from a modernist approach? What is modernism and postmodernism? Don't worry -- no ivory tower language here; everything is in regular laymen's terms, and Tom is one of the best at translating these complicated but important issues into regular speech. Later, Dan answers a patron/listener question: Did you receive flack from your evangelical friends and church family when you became decidedly gay affirming? What were the range of responses like? To Critique Purity Culture (#22)
01:47:54
Seattle's own Dr. Tina Shermer Sellers (psychologist and sex therapist) joins Dan for a fascinating conversation about what is known as Purity Culture, that near-ubiquitous set of sexual-moral claims and practices that ruled the Evangelical zeitgeist in the 80s, 90s and 00s, and is still today probably the default sexual understanding of most American Protestants. But is that understanding Biblical? Does it accord well with what we are learning through science? Why did it come to such prominence? Does having premarital sex really take away "a piece of you" every time you do it, and what's with the double standards for boys and girls? We get into it all, including a bunch of interesting listener questions. Later, Dan answers a patron question: "What is the Gospel, and how do you evangelize?" (1:30:00) SEXUAL SHAME is a visceral feeling of humiliation and disgust toward one's own body and identity as a sexual being and a belief of being abnormal inferior and unworthy. This feeling can be internalized but also manifests in interpersonal relationships having a negative impact on trust communication and physical and emotional intimacy sexual shame develops across the lifespan in interactions with interpersonal relationships one's culture and society and subsequent critical self appraisal. there is also a fear and uncertainty related to one's power or right to make decisions including safety decisions related to sexual encounters along with an internalized judgment toward one's own sexual desire. To Consider Inerrancy, Infallibility & Inspiration (#21)
01:36:00
Dan is re-joined by Bonnie Kristian (author of "A Flexible Faith") to talk through the various ways that Christians think about Biblical inspiration (and just what kind of "errors" might be in there). As you know from episode 6, Bonnie is a great guest, and has really done her research on these topics! Also, Dan corrects something from last week regarding his "Protestant Rosary" segment, shares some thoughts about the theological consequences of how we process the sudden passing of Christian author and thinker Rachel Held Evans, and he answers a listener question: "How do you navigate conversations with conservative friends/family as you deconstruct?" Corrections / Rachel Held Evans: 2:00 Inerrancy, Infallibility, Inspiration: 10:00 Listener Question: 1:19:00 Bonnie's Discussion Questions: - Which view of scripture is most familiar to you? Which one did your Sunday school teachers tell you? - Which perspective do you find most appealing and why? Most convincing? - Is the view you find more convincing the same as the one you find appealing? Why/why not? - How authoritative is the Bible in your life and faith? How does it interact with church tradition, reason, and personal experience? - What is at stake in how you understand the inspiration of Scripture, and should your view influence your reading and studying of the Bible? Why "Love the Sinner, Hate the Sin" Is Psychologically Impossible (#20)
01:39:52
Richard Beck is a psychologist, professor, speaker and author of many books, right in what I consider to be the sweet spot: the overlap of psychology and Christian faith/theology. This is more or less where I am headed professionally, and it’s encouraging to have had a conversation like this one, so chock full of interesting, challenging, and inspiring stuff. We talk a good bit about disgust, which is a big factor in the impossibility of “love the sinner hate the sin,” but we also talk about spiritual practices and habits, Jesus and the Pharisees, and even placing cockroaches in orange juice. Later, I introduce a simple prayer practice I call The Protestant Rosary (1:26:00). Richard’s blog/site: http://experimentaltheology.blogspot.com/ Directions for praying the "Protestant Rosary": 1. Get a rosary 2. Start where the three strands meet, near the cross, and pray one Jesus Prayer for each of the 10 beads before the spacer bead 3. For the spacer bead, pray the Lord's Prayer 4. Repeat until one "lap" of the rosary is finished. Repeat if you so desire. Variation #1: For each of the 10 standard beads, pray for a person in your life, i.e. "Have mercy on Derek," and imagine God's mercy enveloping Derek. Variation #2: Like Variation #1, but use multiple beads for the same person, each time saying the same prayer, "Have mercy on Derek," but with each bead, focusing on a different aspect of Derek's life, like his work life, his faith, his relationship with a loved one, his health, etc. How to End: Madame Guyon recommends taking a moment to "swallow" or accept whatever God has given during the prayer time, even if this time nothing appears to have been given; be grateful for the silence and peace. The Jesus Prayer: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me/us (a sinner)." To Cut Your “Technological Umbilical Cord” (#19)
01:27:16
Many of us know the psychological costs of our addiction to all our electronic devices (do we really?), but have we considered the spiritual costs (and are those actually distinct)? Do we really understand what's going on neurologically, as we continue to log hours per day on our smartphones? Dr. Tricia Rhodes chats with Dan about what exactly is being lost, what we might regain, and how the human brain is able to re-wire itself -- thank God! Later, Dan answers a listener question: "You often mention that you were more afraid to be a liberal Christian than a non-believer when you were younger. What's the main belief you feared would change and has it changed? Is there anything that changed as you became more progressive that went back to, or is now trending toward, a more traditional position over time?” ** Edit: In the Introduction Dan says Tricia‘s books are released by Zondervan. To Embrace the Four Divergent Jesuses of the Gospels (#17)
01:45:52
Dan is joined by NT scholar Dale B. Martin to consider what it means that the four Gospels present four at-least-somewhat divergent accounts of both Jesus's life and his character. Dale argues that there is both much to be learned and much to be experienced devotionally by taking each Gospel separately, and not "deciding beforehand" that they must be harmonized. Dan's friend Kenny shares his concerns regarding the Gospel of John, and Dale responds to those questions. At the end of the episode, in a brand new segment, Dan answers a patron-submitted question about he and his wife's current church transition, after leaving their church of 10 years. To Escape "Culture War Christianity" (#16)
01:29:24
There is a kind of “religious humidity” in some parts of our country, such that the dominant form of Evangelicalism puts a kind of constant and uniform pressure on anyone who lives there. This affects what happens to people who leave their religious communities, either altogether or who leave to join different communities. Dr. Terry Shoemaker has done some very interesting research with some of these people, especially those who were in some way traumatized by either their original community, or through the process of leaving. Some of them, he says, were “weaponized into a Culture War Christianity.” Wars require weapons, and sometimes those weapons end up being our own children. “Pray the Gay Away: The Extraordinary Lives of Bible Belt Gays” - https://smile.amazon.com/Pray-Gay-Away-Extraordinary-Lives/dp/0814786383/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=pray+the+gay+away&qid=1552928029&s=books&sr=1-2 “The Sacred Canopy”: https://www.amazon.com/Sacred-Canopy-Elements-Sociological-Religion/dp/0385073054 “America’s New Religions”: http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2018/12/andrew-sullivan-americas-new-religions.html Dr. Tina Sellers: http://tinaschermersellers.com/ Allender Center Podcast Episode on Spiritual Trauma: https://theallendercenter.org/2018/03/spiritual-abuse-1/ Shelly Rambo: https://www.bu.edu/sth/profile/shelly-rambo/ Terry’s email: Terry.Shoemaker@asu.edu Edited by Scott Cangemi Join the Patreon for bonus episodes every month: patreon.com/dankoch YHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98 Website: youhavepermissionpod.com Join Dan's email list: dankochwords.com Email Dan: youhavepermissionpodcast@gmail.com Artwork by http://sprungle.co/ Keywords: spiritual abuse, Bible Belt, culture war, weapon, spiritual trauma, science, creationism, theology, spiritual but not religious, progressive, liberal, conservative

Our guest today is Dr. Philip Clayton (Claremont School of Theology), giving us his personal faith story from a secular household, through conservative Evangelicalism, and ultimately into Quakerism. We also talk about Panentheism, for which he is a major Christian advocate. To Resist the Mob (on the Left and Right) (#11)
01:18:56
(This episode is appearing on both the You Have Permission and Depolarize! Podcast feeds.) How do we know that we aren't caught up in a "mob mentality" on social, political, or theological issues? Can universities be places where we teach young people to think critically? Can an openly gay woman and her conservative "marriage-is-between-one-man-and-one-woman" sister stay close friends? The answer to the last one is yes: Dr. Elizabeth Corey (Baylor University, First Things Magazine) and her sister Mary wrote a joint op-ed in the Atlantic in 2015 proving as much (Elizabeth is the conservative one). Dr. Corey helps Dan break down why things have gotten so mob-like, and what we can do to stay out of it. Elizabeth and Mary’s Essay: https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2015/05/i-choose-at-once-to-love-my-sister-and-disagree-with-her-on-gay-marriage/392279/ Other writings by Elizabeth: https://www.baylor.edu/great_texts/index.php?id=100039 The Coddling of American Mind: https://smile.amazon.com/Coddling-American-Mind-Intentions-Generation/dp/0735224897/ref=sr_1_1?crid=24RMCD9777FMY&keywords=coddling+american+mind&qid=1551469414&s=gateway&sprefix=coddling+ameri%2Caps%2C227&sr=8-1 How to Think: A Survival Guide for a World at Odds: https://smile.amazon.com/How-Think-Survival-Guide-World/dp/0451499603/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=how+to+think&qid=1551469424&s=gateway&sr=8-2 Join the Patreon for bonus episodes every month: patreon.com/dankoch YHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98 Website: youhavepermissionpod.com Join Dan's email list: dankochwords.com Email Dan: youhavepermissionpodcast@gmail.com Artwork by http://sprungle.co/

To Be Gay Affirming (#10)
01:44:24
This is a tricky one, especially for those who have a genuine desire to take the Bible seriously. The argument for inclusion that J. R. Daniel Kirk presents, however, is one that I find convincing, and it is the best one of the many that I have read or heard (including by Matthew Vines, Gene Robinson, and others). Richard Hay's compassionate argument against affirmation is also presented. Many podcasts on this topic tend to focus on the emotional aspect of the issue, on the increased risk of suicide among queer teens, etc. I think those have their place, but for many Christians, we simply NEED a good argument about what to do with this stubborn text -- the Bible -- that really does seem to stand against homosexual activity. Daniel presents such an argument. To Think Seriously About (Biblical) Patriarchy (#9)
01:30:16
Does the Bible teach a soft, "kind" version of patriarchy, or was patriarchy the unquestioned cultural backdrop of the Biblical text? Does God proscribe a loving patriarchal system, or is God against it? What does God call his daughters to be and do in the world? Author Carolyn Custis James joins Dan to talk through her work in this area, which has massive implications for the Egalitarian vs. Complementarian debate. https://carolyncustisjames.com/ Seth Roberts playlist: https://open.spotify.com/user/dankoch/playlist/43QDpk1CQ098K2PpFcFVUy?si=BDa2luwVTC-GwdJpnXg85Q Join the Patreon for bonus episodes every month: patreon.com/dankoch YHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98 Website: youhavepermissionpod.com Join Dan's email list: dankochwords.com Email Dan: youhavepermissionpodcast@gmail.com Artwork by http://sprungle.co/

To Be Theologically Progressive (#8)
02:12:24
This week (partly since I will be out of town next weekend) we are getting a doozy of an episode with Dr. Kyle Roberts (Dean of United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities) about progressive Christianity. What is it? Can we get a 30,000 ft view of what it looks like to be in this world? Can a progressive Christian still affirm the Trinity, Christ’s resurrection, and more? How might a progressive Christian think about atonement, Biblical inerrancy, the meaning of salvation, sexual inclusion? Kyle is here to help us out, and my friend Ben Keeney is also here to help, playing the role of a low-grade skeptic of this particular understanding of Christianity. To Consider *ALL* the Atonement Theories (#6)
01:21:28
*How exactly* does Christ's death and resurrection make people right with God? Author and journalist Bonnie Kristian walks Dan through 5 of the most popular and historic answers to that question. Many of us (especially Baptist/Calvinist/Reformed Christians) have been told there is only one such Atonement theory -- Penal Substitution -- but that isn't the case. Bonnie and Dan discuss Christus Victor, Satisfaction Theory, Moral Exemplar, Penal Substitution, and Scapegoat Theory. To Wonder If "Unreached Peoples" Should Be Reached (the John Chau Incident) (#5)
01:05:04
John Chau was a 26 year old American missionary who managed to get himself smuggled to North Sentinel Island, an island in the Bay of Bengal, between India and Mayanmar, home of somewhere between 20 and 200 members of a completely unreached people group. He was killed back in November, by the islanders' spears thrown from a distance. His story is not unique in the history of Christian missions, but it brings important questions back to the surface of Christian worldwide dialogue. Today's guests are Calvary Chapel pastor Andy Hirschman and Dr. David Leong, missiologist and author at Seattle Pacific University. To Reject Predestination (An Alternative to TULIP) (#4)
01:02:23
Many Christians have been taught that in order to truly submit to God's sovereignty and God's word, it is necessary to believe that God predetermines who will go to Heaven, and who will to Hell, before they are born. Dr. Don Thorsen (Azusa Pacific University) argues that this is a false dichotomy, and that in fact, most Christians over time have not held the doctrine of predestination, commonly known in Calvinist circles by it's acrostic "TULIP". Don argues that most Christians actually believe something closer to his alternate acrostic: ACURA. To Think Theologically About Aliens (Seriously) (#3)
01:20:11
Astrophysicists discover new planets almost daily; might there be intelligent life on one of these planets? Even if not, the number of planets that must exist universe-wide is probably in the billions, or higher. Given God's creativity, it seems plausible, even likely, that there are other species somewhere in the universe who can communicate with their Creator. What consequences does this have for Christian theology? Two main areas are explored: the Trinity (specifically the Incarnation), and people in other religious traditions (on Earth). To Accept Theistic Evolution (#2)
01:25:33
Many Christians are erroneously taught that either 1) Darwinian Evolution is true or 2) the Bible / the Gospel is true, but not both. In fact, thousands of respected scientists are committed Christians, and thousands more are leaving their churches due to perceived conflicts between science and Christianity, especially in Evangelical Protestant circles. In this episode, we hear from Amy Keeney, an Evangelical who is skeptical of some aspects of Darwinian theory, and we hear Adrian Wyard's story, how he went from devout young-earth creationist evangelist to accepting theistic evolution (and a whole lot of evidence and arguments along the way). To Believe Some Non-Christians Are Saved (#1)
01:12:42
Many great evangelists, theologians, and Christian thinkers over the millennia have believed that God will save many people who do not confess Christ while they are alive, including Billy Graham, C.S. Lewis, D. L. Moody, Athanasius, Thomas Aquinas, and many more. You don't HAVE to believe that God will save non-Christians in the end, but you certainly have permission to believe it; in fact, you'd be in good company. Guests: C.S.
