After the real estate market crashed in 2007 Mr. Coffie launched a successful consulting company helping small business owners earn millions in revenues via federal small business programs. In 2012 he launched Evankoff Construction, a steel erection company building airplane hangars and metal buildings for government agencies around the country. In 2017 Mr. Coffie launched Scorecontracts @ YouTube a channel to help other small businesses achieve their revenue goals using the power of federal contracts. Alex Hernandez founded Hernandez Consulting & Constructionin 2005 and currently serves as CEO and Chairman of the Board. Hernandez Consulting & Construction is a project management firm and general contractor specializing in design, construction, design-build and real estate development. Under Alex’s leadership, the firm has grown exponentially and now actively operates in a large portion of the United States.

The firm has been named to the Inc. 500/5000list six times and Alex was named Louisiana’s2017 Small Business Person of the Year. 

Alex began his career as a Captain in the U.S. Marine Corpsspecializing in Logistics Operations. He has sat on the Board of Directors for the Veterans Services of America,Inc. and the TulaneAlumni Association. Alex is also Managing Partner of the New Orleans Redevelopment Fundand Albert Architecture. He holds both a BA Cum Laude and an MBA from Tulane University.

In this episode we discuss how he came to learn about government contracting How he began his career cleanup projects after Hurricane Katrina. How to be a great subcontractor, build great teaming arrangements, and how he raised capital for his firm.

I hope that his story inspired many people out there not to quit and to continue the fight because it is well worth the effort in the end. As he said when dealing with a time where others would have given up, he learned in the USMC that quitting simply was not an option.

Today's guest, Ms. Janetta Brewer, is the  owner of Blue Alchemy Consulting. She has an extensive federal contracting background, which includes roles with the Office of Secretary of Defense, US Navy, Defense Logistics Agency, US Army Corps of Engineers, US Air Force, Department of Homeland Security and in her last federal, she was a senior member of the Defense Procurement and Acquisition Policy staff, which means she developed acquisition regulations and guidance for approximately 35,000 contracting professionals that streamline acquisition process across the federal government and improve contract execution outcomes for and in excess of $400 billion in annual contract spin.

In today's episode, we discuss how heavily the government relies on industry to help with the process of implementing change to both the FAR and DFARs considering the impact from small businesses. Beverly Kuykendall, President of Government Business, leads AMD’s expansion into key areas aligned with the firm’s long-term strategic goals. In March 2016, AMD was awarded a $1.2 billion government contract for the provision of medical supplies to more than 60 VA Medical Centers from Florida to Maine.

Throughout a career that has spanned more three decades, Ms. Kuykendall has earned numerous honors including being named one of the 50 Most Powerful Minority Women in Business and Entrepreneur of the Year by the Black Business Association of Los Angeles. Her relationship-driven, facilitative approach and keen understanding of economic issues has resulted in the development of key initiatives involving organizations in both the private and public sectors.

011: Donnie Harris - Unlimited Warrant to Write Billions in Contract Actions

Donnie Harris, former senior contracting officer with an unlimited warrant, meaning he could sign off at any size contract. Over the course of his 20 years in government he managed complex and high-profile procurements totaling over $3 billion, that's billion with a B, from the acquisition phase to the pre-award for three DC agencies.

His government customers where Mr. Harris provided procurement support included the Internal Revenue Service, Federal Aviation Administration, the Veterans Administration, Food and Drug Administration, Commerce, SBA, Department of Homeland Security, Coast Guard, DOE, National Institutes of Health, and the Department of Labor.

What I like the most about this interview with Mr. Harris was that he shared some truths about how the government works from the inside. These are things that are rarely heard outside of the government workplace.

Gabriel Ruiz was born in Puerto Rico, he served in the U.S. Army for 26 years as a Communications and Technology Acquisition Officer. In 2006 he proudly retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. This is when he then launched his business with the guidance of his mentor.

Linda Rawson is a technology entrepreneur, author, inventor, and C-level executive.  Since 2006, she has owned and operated DynaGrace Enterprises, a Women-Owned Small Business in rural Morgan, Utah.  She started as a software engineer in the eighties when it was not typical for a woman in Utah. 

She has received several awards for Davis/Morgan business of the year and wrote a very vulnerable book about grief.  Her background as a software engineer, combined with her corporate executive experience, merges the technical with the business world.   She has exceeded expectations and never let various challenges and obstacles associated with being a woman impede upon her path to success

In this episode we discuss her adventure navigating the 8a program. How she experienced success after finding a mentor/partner who showed her the ropes. Life after 8a and her latest invention; a weather station called the WeatherEgg.  She educates children about weather science through her coloring book and finds balance in life by traveling and participating in outdoor activities. She is pivoting her company into air quality.
