081: Making a Giant with Maria and Chris Facey: The mad guitarist lands a 21 Million IDIQ in transportation

Hey GovCon Giants today, we are mixing things up a little bit. Starting this month, we will be featuring an all-new podcast that we call Making A Giant. That's right, Making A Giant. This podcast will showcase persons, businesses who got their very first win, not their 10th contract, not some large multi-million dollar contract, but their very first one.

In today's very first episode of Making A Giant, we feature someone who I know as the Mad Guitarist. Chris Facey joined Govcon EDU, and on our weekly Tuesday calls always has a guitar or series of guitars and his background. He's a freight broker and was helping my company, Evankoff ship out critical PPE during the midst of the global pandemic. Well, one day while Chris was watching a video clip from Wesley, the 16-year-old military contractor, he became inspired to stop just learning and decide to take action. He found a transportation readiness contract on beta.sam, that his team qualified for, and he decided to pursue it. With my help and the sample proposals from inside the courses, he was able to a respond and qualify for the final awardees list.  And a few weeks later, he was notified that he at one, a spot on the $21 million IDIQ, transportation readiness contract.

Stay tuned for this upcoming episode between Maria and Chris discussing all of the details that took place in between.

In today's episode. We meet with the man who spent the last four years fighting for the little guy. Robb Wong was sworn in as Associate Administrator Office of Government Contracting and Business Development, GCBD, in March of 2017, where he advocated for small businesses and represents them on behalf of the President of the United States. Historically the Associate Administrator Government Contracting Business Development overseas over $500 billion and total federal spending, helps ensure that small businesses can compete for federal opportunities. Robb strategy was straightforward. #1, make SBA certifications more useful. #2, Increase the supply of contracts reserved for the various small business programs and #3 improved GCBD customer service. What he would like to see happen after his retirement to push the needle forward for small firms. He continues to give to small businesses. He regularly meets with and counsel small business farms weekly at a local breakfast spot down the street from his residence. Stay tuned for our next Govcon Giant.

She's helped thousands of businesses from solopreneurs to multi-million dollar corporations find their fast track success in the federal arena. 078: Brian Henry - Former truck driver builds successful top contractor company

As a special guest, Mr. Brian Henry, President of Henry General Contractors, who was a former truck driver turned multi-million dollar general contractor. His journey began as a dump truck operator when a good friend approached him about doing more. The business owner was a former employer of his cousin and asked Brian, who's going to be the next MBE and the area. Realizing that his time spent sitting in the dump truck waiting on loads could be more effectively used in managing projects and teams. Brian set out to get his construction supervisor's license. Eventually, he worked his way up until the 8a program and four years later had surpassed the $10 million annual revenue mark.

In today's story, we share Brian's lessons learned from his father, the trial and errors of running a business, viable lessons from building a multimillion-dollar business, speaking with multi-billion dollar executives, how he views a general contractor as a traffic director, and much, much more. This is an eye-opening episode to listen to for those of you who may want to pivot markets for those who believe they are stuck in one particular area. And for those persons looking for direction. Brian was first introduced to me by one of our Govcon EDU students. I remember meeting him in Florida at a National Parks event where he attended and we discussed his ambitions. He's a regular guy who decided that he wanted more out of life. I think that we could all relate to that.

077: Believing in yourself is first step to become what you dreamed for yourselves, INC 500 list champion Kizzy Dominguez proves it

The time that we've ever hosted a guest for a back-to-back episode. But when we finished the interview, I had only gone through about half of my questions and we still had a lot of stones to turn over. For those of you who caught my interview with Kizzy Dominguez last week, today will be more of her wisdom, insights and knowledge. If you're not familiar with Kizzy, She always knew that she wanted to be an entrepreneur from an early age, eventually landing herself to founding K Parks Consulting, INC, KPC. KPC Provides staffing professional and in IT training curriculum development for the government. What I like most about Kizzy is that she comes from a down to earth perspective on government contracting.

In today's episode, we discuss, what do you need to do to win versus making a profit in govcon the other side of staffing businesses, the good and bad of bidding. Her experience in bidding on an RFP for 40 secretaries, the three camps, when it comes to 8a, making errors as a small business can be unforgiving and stereotype bias of being socio-economic set aside. I have her take on things, which is the reason why we are featuring her in back-to-back episodes, but don't think that just because she's down to earth, that she's not a successful entrepreneur, her company continues to be a consistent winner on the INC 500 list for 2017, 2019, and 2020, ranking 185, clocking a whopping 69%, three year growth. Stay tuned for this heartfelt episode with Kizzy Domingez.

075: Frank Spencer III -Turns $1,000 investment into multi million dollar construction firm

Today's podcast guest is Frank Spencer III, President of Aztec Contractors Inc.  When he first started in construction, his father offered to sell him a dormant construction business for just a $1,000. He essentially just purchased the rights to the name, but the story does not end there. His father also charged him rent to use the space where he set up his first office. Even knowing that Frank had very little funds to work with. To hear the rest of the story tune in all the way to the end on the show. But all I can say is that today Aztec contractors is now a prominent construction company in El Paso, Texas, who is working on several high-profile school projects.

In today's episode we discuss family kids and what he values the most. How long it took him to win a contract after becoming 8a certified, the how, who and how it was given it to him.

Even after interviewing more than a dozen construction companies, it seems like their stories never get old. Each one is like a movie in which a protagonist overcomes the unfathomable to become the hero of their own story.

062: Ryan Atencio - Part 1: What is contract acquisition from the customer perspective

I first met Ryan on YouTube as someone who frequently commented on my posts. But he was not just a normal commenter, his comments were articulate and well though responses at a much higher sophistication level. So I told him since he had so much to say, to come onto my podcast and share some of the ideas he had developed from working on the inside of government.

Ryan started out as he explains it a shooter, door kicker ranger who turned into a contract acquisition professional.  Today as he works at special operations unit learned the delicate battle between user, customer and military installation contracting command.

In this episode we dive deep into roles and responsibilities for each person during the acquisition process, how the government operates in silos, how government customers write requirements, what options do you have if the statement of work is wrong, why people get mad at the KO and much more. Occasionally you run across a story that just catches your attention. That was the case when one of my friends forwarded me the story of Wesley Ross. A 16 year old military contractor.

Over the next 60 minutes you will hear a story of someone much wiser than their age suggests. You will learn about overcoming adversity, the power of having a vision, ingenuity of working as business owner who is under the age for most things. This has been the most shared story on my channel all year. 057: Black Proud and Successful Business Owner Eli Smith shares his journey to millions

In today's episode, we feature our guests, Eli Smith, the son of a Black Panther, following two weeks of racial tension and protest across America. After the death of Mr. George Floyd, I thought this would be the great episode to follow considering that Eli Smith, a black business owner has not only built one successful business, but he's built multiple successful businesses across the country. And he's changing the idea of what people view Black Americans as in terms of their success and in terms of what we can accomplish despite all obstacles, Eli Smith, ESmith, Contractors, SGTR. He is now also in spite of everything, building his own development in Syracuse, New York, where it was formerly a waste site.

I hope that you enjoy today's episode. As we transform the minds of people, we share with him the story of how he found his partner and how various programs help change his life and shape who he is. On top of all that we talk about race, because again, this is the time that we're dealing with and the situation at hand. This may be difficult for some people to hear, but it is a candid conversation. And I think that it needs to be heard. Mr. Smith talks about how, when he started his company cleaning out basements in New York, the only people that would work for him were people of color, were felons or people who needed sometimes second, third, and fourth chances. I think we all could use an extra chance. Hope you enjoyed today's episode.

This independence powers our ability to always say and do what is right for our members. Women-led. Progress for all.

In today’s episode we talk about:

  •  What makes Margot Dorfman tick?
  • How USWCC has evolved and grown over the years?

Chris Dambach joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 2007 as an Infantry Scout with the 4th Light Armored Reconnaisance Marine Corps unit in Mattydale, New York.

While on deployment on the Iraq Syrian border, was ejected from his vehicle and suffered numerous injuries. During his recovery he bootstrapped a residential lawn service in 2010 by plastering his New York neighborhood with flyers and taking $5,000 from savings to buy used equipment. Conveniently he named the business Veteran Lawn Care. At the time he and his wife Meghan had a combined annual income of less than $22,000.

The very first year Chris started bidding commercial and government contracts to expand his business. Ten years later his firm has contracts with the VA Healthcare System, National Cemetery Administration, New York State Dept of Corrections and the MTA. This year Industry Standard USA is well on it’s way to hitting the 8 figures mark which is truly an accomplishment for a company with such humble beginnings in lawn care.

Over the next 40 minutes you are going hear how Chris dealt with physical, mental and leisure health. We discuss work life balance and the tole that it took on his marriage. We also dive into the reason behind changing his companies name which is I think is invaluable to new firms and finally the founding of his newest venture Empire Material. Chris is high energy and offered up no less than 7 book recommendations. He has four sons and married his high school sweetheart.

045: Regis Johnson, expands his mindset and increases his opportunities overnight

Today we are discussing mindset.

In previous editions of the show we feature all of these wonderful people who have built, started, or grown their small businesses into amazing outfits. Well today’s guest is a little bit different.

Today we want to feature someone who is probably is a lot like many of our listeners out there listening shy, timid, afraid, fearful and basically “brain wrestling” every decision action. You might likely be your worst enemy. Not the person you are trying to sell, not the agency you want to do business with, not the bank that wants to lend you money. Often time the cure to success is fighting through the analysis paralysis. And today’s guest is a perfect example of that. The story starts off with him coming to Miami event with a negative attitude and false sense of reality. I quickly dismissed his perceived reality as nonsense and set him on a new path that changed his life.

Listen in to the story or Regis Johnson a Govcon student who change his mindset and is now on his way to building his dream business

Today were having a conversation with Maria Martinez. A lot of you know her, she is the back engine of Scorecontracts and Govcon Giants and making things work. A lot of you out there may be facing some of the same experiences and I thought this would be a great way to reflect on her taking her first step towards her govcon journey and experimenting with the idea of taking on a consulting client. Let’s not forget Maria was just a teacher before all this. Today she has nearly $200,000 in projects between the 2 clients, has started working on her first project and is bidding a 4th project. We here at Govcon Giants could not be more proud of superstar Maria for making the commitment to doing what it takes to succeed.
