Getting the Facts Right with Dr. Danielle Belardo, MD
01:00:12

From frustration over the spread of medical misinformation about COVID-19 to racial inequities in our healthcare system, this week’s guest Dr. Danielle Belardo and host D address some important conversations happening in the medical community. Dr. Belardo (@daniellebelardomd) is a Cardiology Fellow and Director of Cardiology at the Insititute of Plant-Based Medicine. She is a go-to when it comes to the benefits of plant-based nutrition for cardiovascular health. In today’s episode, Dr. Belardo and D chat about how pandemic panic has led to the sharing of poorly-sourced information, how to make realistic changes towards plant-based diets, and how they’re trying to shift their own thinking when it comes to race and supporting anti-racist initiatives. Dr. Belardo shares her insights on what needs to be done to increase the number of women in cardiology and discusses her love for nurses as well as her gripes about sexism in med school.

Follow Dr. Belardo on Twitter at @DBelardoMD. Learn more about IOPDM on their website and about their plant-based nutrition programs  here. To apply a patient for the scholarship program you can send an email to scholarships@daniellebelardo.com

Work Hard, Play Hard with Dr. Shaliz Pourkaviani
00:52:02

Today on The WoMed, neonatologist Shaliz Pourkaviani (@doc_by_day) joins D and Dani to talk about the importance of a positive attitude, the benefits of locum tenens, and the need for women to support each other in the workplace. Dani asks something we’re all wondering when listening to Shaliz: is this much energy normal for her? The answer is absolutely. Shaliz finds time to take care of herself first so that she can take care of others later, and she understands the importance of knowing her limits. Her positivity and energy have allowed her to successfully acclimate to hospitals all over the country while working as a traveling neonatologist. Dr. Shaliz shares the top three causes of negativity in the workplace and how to combat them, and why her biggest mentors have been her parents, particularly her father. She passes on to D and Dani the biggest piece advice she was given in med school – one that still sticks with her to this day.

Finding Your Balance with Suzie Brown
00:53:03

Today on The WoMed, cardiologist turned singer-songwriter, Suzie Brown (@suziebrownsongs), joins D and Dani to talk music, medicine, and following your passions. Growing up, Suzie always loved music but was shy about her talent and kept mostly to herself. She decided to follow in her parent’s footsteps by going to medical school and focusing on her strengths of science and math, but she couldn’t match the sense of belongingness she felt when making music with others and ultimately decided music was a passion worth pursuing. She now works part-time in cardiology while raising her children and still making time for music, recently releasing her sixth studio album! Suzie gives incredible advice on how to be the best doctor, how to prioritize during different season of life, and listening to yourself.

New Grad Life with Nurse Sarah
00:58:26

Today on The WoMed, D and Dani are joined by Nurse Sarah (@shesinscrubs) who is celebrating her anniNURSEary this very week! Transitioning from a new grad to a bedside nurse can end a career just as fast as it started, and Sarah discusses how seeking out preemptive therapy helped her to develop the coping skills she needed to get through her first year of nursing. Inspired one of our favorite WoMed (that’s you, Dani!), Sarah created an Instagram account centered on sharing memes and mental health posts to help both new and seasoned nurses build a community and share their stories. Sarah discusses the benefits of a new grad orientation program, how best to cope with nurses who don’t want to see you succeed, and her biggest pieces of advice for new nurses.

Major Life Changes with D & Dani
01:01:02

This week on The WoMed, D has a big announcement to make that leads into an honest and emotional conversation on the realities of nursing and how to lead authentic and meaningful lives while still making sure to make care of yourself. Their Lubrication Question brings them back to their childhood hobbies and favorite indulgences and reveals what age Dani refers to as the best year of her life. The hosts discuss the harsh realities of bedside nursing that has led them both at times to suffer financially, physically, and emotionally, and how there may be other ways to effectively reach people that don’t involve giving up a part of yourself. D and Dani daydream about summer vacation, going off the grid, and potentially running for senate to represent those in healthcare. You can read the New York Times article on burnout that was referenced in today's episode here!

Getting Explicit with Katie Duke, Pt 1
01:01:35

Katie Duke (@thekatieduke), social media influencer, Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, entrepreneur, and motivational speaker sits down with the WoMed to discuss her journey in the medical field thus far. You may recognize Katie’s name, attitude, and personality from her time on NY Med, a docuseries that followed Katie as she worked as an ER Nurse in New York City. While on the series, Katie began to build a presence through social media at a time when people were just getting familiar with some of today’s most popular platforms. Her powerful online presence led her to quickly build a following, but also eventually led to her termination from her 7-year job. Katie gets honest about her constant state of anxiety that has resulted from other women in the field failing to support each other and the stress that stays with her from her experience getting fired. The WoMed discuss their fears – both silly and valid – and how bad decisions and unfortunate situations can actually lead to the greatest success. Tune in next Monday for Part 2!
