The One From Shelter to CEO, Founder of Evio Beauty - Brandi Leifso
51:07

After fleeing a relationship,  Brandi found herself in a women’s shelter with $15 and a laptop to her name. With that laptop, she would learn how to photoshop and create a dream beauty brand, and sell its products before they even existed. What happened next is nothing short of tenacious and inspiring. That non-existent beauty brand dream just 5 years later became a $15 Million Dollar evaluated beauty company, Evio Beauty. Hiring fellow women from the shelter and creating change as she goes, we learn about running a business as a movement is something that will leave everyone inspired and hope-filled.

The One About Instagram vs Reality & Crispy Soda W/ Danielle Catton
51:23

Instagram vs reality images: helpful, harmful, fatphobic, privileged? There’s so much to uncover in the rise of these viral images, and holding space and respect for everyone’s valid experiences and feelings around them. Danielle Catton aka @DanielleIsAnxious stands out as someone willing to create representation in a larger body, with those viral images made by those by those in a thinner one (myself included).

The One Where We Go Behind The Scenes With Team Papaya: Sam & Haley
01:04:43

There’s a lot of curiosity when it comes to how we do what we do. From the day to day stuff, taking the plunge from a side gig to a main one, and finding your individual value on social media when NOBODY talks about it. Today, Team Papaya is on the show to share about their roles in The Birds Papaya Inc. Sam, my talent manager, and Haley, my operations manager, come to share their experiences of being a part of such an unconventional job. How it’s been getting taken seriously in an industry that still lacks credibility in the eyes of the world, real advice on what to do if you’re interested in starting, surprise parts of the gig too. That and more, because I wouldn’t be a good leader if I didn’t get some constructive criticism and dream up some lofty dreams of what’s next for us.

If you’re curious or wondering about the world of content creating, and social media. This is the show for you!

The One About Spaghetti vs Macaroni With Shane Landry
01:04:04

After mentioning to my IG stories that Shane was coming back on the pod and he wanted to do an episode on Spaghetti vs Macaroni, I shot it down and asked my audience to ask him some questions. It was an overwhelming ask for this to be the episode. SO, here we are. Spaghetti vs Macaroni.

But, that’s not all.

We also discuss his time as a new dad to a baby, postpartum sex, and watching your partner’s body change throughout the years and what his perspective (honestly) is about it all. This conversation is both refreshing, hilarious and hopefully a bit healing too. It certainly was for me.

Shane isn’t really on social media so don’t bother following him, he has like 9 posts and they’re all a joke. But, you can see him lurking in the background of everything I do, @TheBirdsPapaya xoxo

The One About Twin Birth & Pandemic Pregnancy With Ariana Joy Christie
01:04:40
Today we welcome one of my best friends onto the podcast, Ariana! After discovering we were both pregnant and due within months of each other, we had plans, BIG plans, for how this would look and be for each of us. A pandemic... had other plans. For Ariana, this was her first birth, and a birth of twins, who came premature when she went into labour on her birthday. The rollercoaster of emotions, and the reality that was a twin birth, a month in NICU and so much more was something I wanted to sit down and talk with her about, unpack, and share in the moments of it all. I’m so happy she came on and opened up her story to us today.

Ariana is newly documenting her story as a twin mom on social media as well, on IG @Ariana_Joy_Christie

The One About A Survivor's Story: Turning Pain Into Purpose With Brittany Piper
59:17

Content warning: Sexual violence (rape), Assault, Drug/Alcohol Use, Eating Disorders & Suicidal Idealation

In 2009, at age 20, the unthinkable happened to Brittany Piper when she was attacked by a stranger who was helping her fix her tire. After her assailant was charged and sentenced, Brittany found herself in jail, and there began her work on healing through trauma and contributions towards ending sexual violence. Between how we talk to our kids, how musical lyrics and language around sex are lending themselves to sexual violence, and so much more… This conversation is eye opening, and necessary. Whether you are the 1 in 4 who will experience sexual violence and working towards healing, or the 3 in 4 who are here to be their supports, we learn about sympathy vs empathy and how to be an active ally. Brittany Piper is now an international activist, speaker and healing coach—cultivating 300+ programs spanning 10 years and 3 continents. Her work has been recognized by The U.S. Army, The Clinton Foundation, Cosmopolitan, Elite Daily + more. The One About Self Advocacy With Amin Jaswal
56:49

Amin Jaswal was in her 20’s when she began to realize something was off and was dismissed by doctors repeatedly. Until one day, in pain and frustration, she took herself to the ER, only to find out she had cancer. Cervical cancer to be exact. This cancer was not detectable by a pap smear and without her own self-advocacy, she may not be here. Passionate to share her story, normalize discussions around discharge, and discomforts, Amin joins us today to share what life looks like when you’re young, single, and have cancer. There is love, romance, and loss in life… and Amin took time to write down her emotions into poetry. Now, a book, A Light Within My Light (preorder April 12 2021). Amin inspires the survivor in all of us, to live life, create boundaries, and fight for yourself.

The One Where We Learn About Diet & Food Myths With Dr. Joshua Wolrich
55:58

Dr. Joshua Wolrich (or as I call him, Dr. Josh) made a name for himself on social media as a doctor willing to speak out on subjects like diet myths (aka “nutribollocks” as he calls them) as well as weight stigma and food insecurities and so much more. After he himself went through a weight loss journey to discover a lot of the deceptions within diet culture, Dr. Josh then took those experiences to lead him into learning more and breaking down a lot of diet myths, like “good” or “bad” foods, since food holds no morality. This conversation is meant to make us think, learn, or unlearn while we also share the commonalities within our own experiences with weight loss and diet culture. With his new book Food Isn’t Medicine, Dr. Josh is here to push back against the mass amounts of bad health advice, with just a bit of humour of course, too.

About the book: “Food Isn't Medicine wades through nutritional science (both good and bad) to demystify the common diet myths that many of us believe without questioning. If you have ever wondered whether you should stop eating sugar, try fasting, juicing or 'alkaline water', or struggled through diet after diet (none of which seem to work), this book will be a powerful wake-up call. Drawing on the latest research and delivered with a dose of humour, it not only liberates us from the destructive belief that weight defines health but also explains how to spot the misinformation we are bombarded with every day.”

You can follow Dr. Joshua Wolrich on Instagram @DrJoshuaWolrich and find his book on preorder now, coming out on April 15, 2021.

The One About The Woman Who Lost The Legal Rights To Her NAME!
38:11

Imagine ordering your Starbucks coffee and not being allowed to say what name to put on the cup? Well, that happened to today's guest. Prominent wedding dress designer _______ ______ (we literally can’t name her) that you may know from a show such as “Say Yes To The Dress'' after a legal battle, lost the rights to her name, her social media (over ONE MILLION FOLLOWERS), her designs and more. Confused? Yeah, us too. So we brought her on to talk about it, use it as a cautionary tale for personal brands and where is the line between PERSON and BRAND. Where will she go, and who will she be? We’re going to talk about it all. Much of this is shocking, but also very exciting for what’s next for our friend!

The One About Periods & Period Poverty with Bloody Btches!
44:23

An ever-evolving conversation around periods, Bloody Btches brings menstruation to the forefront of their work. To normalize them, discuss them over social media, share and encourage the sharing of period stories and, finally and most importantly - to create awareness around period poverty. With the current state of the world, period poverty has hit harder than ever, making it super difficult for many people to have access to pads, tampons, cups, etc. Nayanka and Zoe met in college and since then have been researching and exploring ways to help our lower-income communities that don't have access to menstrual products. Can you imagine having to pick food over pads?!Their work is fascinating, informative and truly transforming lives as they have worked to become this non-profit organization with periods at the center of it all.

The One About Having Confidence & Taking Up Space with Host & Inclusive Style Expert Meredith Shaw
43:44

Meredith Shaw has a vast career from country music, model, inclusivity style-expert, radio show host and even cook show host! Her story, while ever-evolving, has also brought so many lessons and life tools along with it, which we’re so glad she could share some with us today. Meredith is a shining light, and her career is truly one to watch and be inspired by in all its “scrappy” ways from the get-go, like seeing a lack of representation in inclusive styling...and then doing it herself...on TV! Makes you wonder when you see yourself missing from a space, how can you show up in it? And maybe, with a story like Meredith’s, believe that you can. Because what do we always say? “I don’t know what I’m doing but I’m doing it anyway”

The One About Enduring Hope With Psychologist & Holocaust Survivor Dr. Edith Eger
38:22

Dr. Edith Eger was just a teenager in 1944 when she experienced one of the worst evils the human race has ever known. As a Jew living in Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe, she and her family were sent to Auschwitz, the heinous death camp. Her parents were sent to the gas chambers but Edith’s bravery kept her and her sister alive. Toward the end of the war Edith and other prisoners had been moved to Austria. On May 4, 1945 a young American soldier noticed her hand moving slightly amongst a number of dead bodies. He quickly summoned medical help and brought her back from the brink of death. (via dreditheger.com)

Here to share with us what she hopes will benefit the younger generations to live boldly with hope, renowned psychologist Dr. Edith Eger joins us for a powerful conversation that will leave us all with something to change our lives. At 93 years old, Dr. Edith Eger is out with her newest book, a follow up from her bestseller “The Choice” called “The Gift: 12 Lessons to Save Your Life” and she’s here to share a taste of those lessons with us today.

“If self-love and healing were on the other side of discomfort, would you have the courage to face your fears?" - Laura Hesp, Inclusive Love

So in today’s episode Laura comes on the show to discuss the sister wound, how it played into our friendship history, and exploring healing from it. Anupa King also known as @denupzter on Instagram, I have followed and adored for years. Then, a year ago we were both a part of the same Life After Birth exhibit where I heard Anupa share her story about postpartum depression for the first time. The room that listened to Anupa speak was silent, and with eyes welled with tears. This was the kind of story we hadn’t really heard before about postpartum. Anupa opens up about her infertility, her losses, her postpartum and even how she was mistaken as the nanny to her own children and into her message of hope, fight, and dancing.

Follow Anupa at @denupzter on Instagram today to follow her and her journey alongside her family.

The One About Our Weight with I Weigh Founder Jameela Jamil
48:34

We’re being distracted from what’s really important. We’re being misinformed, and lied to. Everyday, for decades, but now...more than ever. So Actress/Writer/Activist Jameela Jamil did something rather transformative about it (like, law-changing transformative) by taking a real look behind the scenes of what was happening in celebrity culture, influencer culture and diet culture. Jameela, with a call to stop weighing ourselves with scales, and start weighing ourselves for MORE, began a movement known as “I Weigh”. Now a podcast, Youtube series and highly-followed Instagram page. Today we unpack how I Weigh began, where it is now, and how YOU can be your own activist, and start using the power you have on social media (it’s not as scary as you think!). This episode will probably have you reeling and thinking...for a long while after.

The One Where We Hear The Best Story Ever! With Kayleigh of Heritage Baby Designs
32:34

After repetitive, non-progressive labour, Kayleigh found herself racing against the clock when it finally came time to get to the hospital. This resulted in a birth NOBODY expected.

This story is exciting, exhilarating, and beautiful and leads into how this now-mom-of-two has birthed (pun intended) a baby-wearing brand with a focus on inclusivity and sustainability. By merely adding just a little more fabric, and just the right amount. As a small, black-owned, mama-owned business on the backs of giving birth in a car, these are the kinds of stories we need in 2020.

The One About A Successful Sexless Marriage With Jorja Lindley
49:40
Get ready, we’re about to talk about vaginas… a lot. After delivering her son 6 years ago, Jorja was given what many know to be “the husband stitch” (yes, you may roll your eyes) but this led Jorja into an entirely different postpartum narrative than the ones we normally hear of and discuss. Jorja’s story will lead us all down a road of  being advocates for our down under bits, speaking up for our pain and our pleasure, and finding intimacy in new places. With many women experiencing pain during sex (with our without childbirth) and staying quiet about it, we hope this conversation leads to some really life-changing thoughts and conversations. So let’s talk about womanhood, break down societal ideals and have meaningful REAL conversations around sex in marriage and like...what “sex” even means anyways.

But in an effort to build bridges, not taller fences we sit downand discuss how we can ALL learn, be better and #PassTheMic to more marginalized bodies from which the movement originated. You may feel uncomfortable and challenged, but that’s where the good stuff happens.

After we were both featured in the same article that went viral, I knew I needed to sit down and get some expert conversations flowing about dieting, recovery and how we can be better supporters in that arena. Kyla Fox has established herself as a visionary and innovator, when it comes to re-framing the way Canadians think about and treat eating disorders. As someone who struggled herself with an eating disorder, Fox identified care gaps and fundamental flaws in the treatment and recovery approach. Kyla is a Master’s level clinician with degrees from both the University of Toronto in the Master’s of Social Work program as well as an Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Women’s Studies. Kyla is a member of the Ontario Association of Social Workers and is registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. The One Where We Discuss A Commonly Undiagnosed Disorder with Leslie Mosier (aka Doug The Pug’s Mom!)
47:24
March is Endometriosis Awareness Month, and it felt important to bring this topic to the podcast. With the diagnosis of endo taking often up to a decade, and too often it’s symptoms being called “normal” this was an opportunity for us to learn from another’s story so we are encouraged to become advocates for ourselves and our health. That’s where Leslie comes in. She’s young, cool as hell, and the mom to the world’s most famous pug, Doug. Her life is absolutely insane, from red carpets, a toy line, super bowl commercials and then to suffering in pain with this crippling disorder.
Leslie shares her experience with endometriosis and how online community helped her along the way, and why she hopes to continue to spread awareness, including through music and her own online platform.

As one of the original internet home bloggers, Elsie Larson is well known for her style, her classic pink front door, her two adorable daughters, and a Pinterest-worthy EVERYTHING. The blog she shares with her sister, Emma, called “A Beautiful Mess”, is a place of joy and inspiration that’s proven longevity on the internet in a day in age where everything feels so fleeting. But, that’s not all. In this conversation, Elsie also opens up about International adoption, the story of her two daughters, with some really real chats about the process for her.
