Episode 58: Recession? WHAT Recession? And 3 other topics: 6 Tips for Podcast SEO & Promotion; Summer Reading Book List, etc.
08:13

This is Joanne Tan, 10 Plus Brand. In this newsletter we're covering four topics.

1st: we won the "Best SEO Agency in the San Francisco Bay Area" Award.

2nd: "Recession? What Recession?"

3rd: What are you reading? My recommendations for a list of books.

4th: Six do-it-yourself tips for SEO and posting your podcast.

1st: following last year's two awards, - the first was "top advertising and digital marketing agency in the San Francisco Bay Area 2021", ranked by Clutch, and the second, as one of the "best digital marketing agencies in California 2021", rated by DesignRush, 10 Plus Brand Inc. just won our third award as the "best SEO agency in San Francisco Bay Area 2022", rated by expertise.com. Many thanks to our outstanding SEO team, whose relentless efforts in combining our unique brand building approaches with technology resulted in elevating brands and profits for each of our SEO clients. Our motto is: the whole nine yards are not enough, we go 10 plus to exceed our customers expectations. Setting the bar high for ourselves have led to many customer success stories: Some have increased their business volume by 45%; some have grown from a local California brand to doing business in all 50 states; and some others have reached their status as thought leaders and influencers.

Today's topic #2: "Recession? What recession?" I don't buy it: There seldom is, if ever, a recession when employment is high, the dollar is strong, the stock market is up (as of July 29 2022), and Congress is optimistic about passing the large spending and investing bill, the "Inflation Reduction Act" (a smaller version of Biden's "Build Back Better" Bill). Yes, inflation is a serious problem. And the Fed is aggressively cooling the economy with interest rate hikes. But the fundamentals of the economy remain strong. I don't have a crystal ball. But in my humble opinion, the American economy will have a soft landing that won't last more than 18 months before the next big growth wave was going to be unleashed by both the economy's intrinsic force and the Inflation Reduction Act.

keep our fingers crossed that the bill will pass the Senate, or better, call or email your US senators to make sure they will do their part to pass it.

Even if there will be a recession, what is within your control that you can do during a recession? - Sharpen your knives during these 12 to 18 months to get ready for the next growth waves. Here are just a few things we can help you:

Audit your online brand presence: what to save, stop and start?  (the three S's.)

Revise your target audience profile.

Update your website with new marketing strategies, stories, SEO.

Expand a digital presence with social media marketing.

Create a high quality brand promotional video.

Produce podcasts, newsletters, daily posts and engagements, etc.

Turn the R word from recession to recharging your business batteries! For those of you who plan ahead, opportunities always favor the prepared. If you want an initial consultation, call us at 1-888-288-4533.

Episode 57: Term Limits for US Supreme Court Justices; Investigation & Impeachment of Justice Thomas & Other Perjurers
06:24
No one is above the law, not even a Supreme Court Justice

PLEASE share.

Please take actions such as sending a message to your congressmen and senators, to DOJ, and other lawmakers in Congress.

Do it now!

To watch, listen to, and read this as a video

To read it as a blog

The US Supreme Court’s justices, like other branches of the federal government, must be checked and balanced by the legislative and the law enforcement branches, with investigation, impeachment, suspension, and removal in case of high crimes and misdemeanors.  The US Constitution never assumed SCOTUS to be above the law, and be shielded from civil and criminal liabilities.

In light of some justices' possible perjuries re Roe vs. Wade during confirmation hearings, and Clarence Thomas' possible aiding and abetting his wife's criminal conspiracy to overthrow 2020 Presidential Election,  Congress and DOJ: Please take these two actions:

We ask the US Congress and the US Department of Justice to immediately initiate these actions:

(1) The Department of Justice must investigate and the House needs to initiate  impeachments against those justices who lied under oath during confirmation hearings about not overturning Roe, and pursue perjury charges against these lying US Supreme Court Justices.

(2) The Department of Justice must investigate and the House needs to initiate  impeachment against Justice Clarence Thomas for any level of criminal aiding and abetting his wife’s criminal participation in the conspiracy to overturn the 2020 Presidential Election.

Term limits for Every Supreme Court Justice

We the people additionally must take action to impose term limits for all SCOTUS: A constitutional amendment must be introduced by the legislature, to limit every SCOTUS' term to be about 18 years, as advocated by Stanford Professor Larry Diamond in his book “Ill Winds”.

Episode 56: How to do more with less in brand marketing during inflation
03:41

- To read it as a blog

- To watch it as a video

To stay in the loop, subscribe to our Newsletter

The 1st insight is: do more with less. Just like more food results in more weight and health problems, more marketing in an indiscriminately what-others-are-doing fashion can be a waste of money, and gets you nowhere.  How can you get the most bang for your marketing buck, especially with inflation-induced shrinking budgets? (Hint: Starting with the low hanging fruit, such as a LinkedIn profile and/or a website.)

The 2nd insight is slow and steady wins the race.  Many people try to lose weight by starvation, deprivation, yo-yo dieting--all to no avail. Sticking to Noom’s slow but steady course of physical activity, psychological tricks, and mental reinforcement every day proves to be the winning recipe for my success. In brand marketing, consistent and persistent efforts over time have led to more profitability, influence, and success for our clients.

I am giving away many nuggets in the form of a slide presentation as a video, available as paid content. Please download the slide by clicking “paid content” at  https://10plusbrand.substack.com/subscribe, by choosing either monthly or yearly plan.

This is Joanne Tan, Brand Strategist and CEO of 10 Plus Brand. Stay tuned for the next load of nuggets: So you want to have your own podcast-- how to post, SEO, and promote your podcast, by yourself.  I’m writing a book: How to Become a Brand - Decode, Create, Amplify.  You, as a subscriber, will get bits and pieces of the book way ahead of others, and that buys you time to be ahead of the game!

Episode 54: Will Smith’s Slap - What makes a man defend another woman? (And vice versa?) _ by 10 Plus Brand
05:50

Even though I wish Will Smith could have used the Oscar stage to first VERBALLY extract an apology from Chris Rock, instead of slapping him and using profanity, I know that Will Smith’s intention was out of his love for his wife and to defend his wife above and beyond any considerations for himself, such as being charged for assault, or being criticized, or even barred from the Academy.

Cory Booker’s impassioned speech at Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings moved her, himself, myself, and many others to tears.  Even though it was a speech prepared in advance, it was delivered in such a heartfelt and compassionate way that it completely overpowered the vicious attacks Judge Jackson had endured during the hearing.

I myself, as one of MANY women who have often fought our battles alone, defended ourselves and our honor alone, shared the tears of gratitude Judge Jackson shed, for the genuine understanding of what Cory Booker quotes Ginger Rogers as saying: “I did everything Fred Astaire did, but backwards and in heels.” Booker went on: “Nobody is gonna steal the joy,...”  “You have earned this spot. You are worthy. You are a great American…. You’re here. And I know what it’s taken for you to sit in that seat.”

The good and the great that came out of these two men moves me, and frankly, I know for a fact that I am not the only woman who wishes their quality in a man who deserves to be called a husband, or a partner, or a true friend, or a decent human being who gives a piece of his or her true self in an unjust or even humiliating situation.

This kind of compassion and love is not limited to a man’s protection for another woman or vice versa. This kind of love transcends race, gender, nationality, and all barriers to humanity.

You see it in so many non-Ukrainian volunteer fighters risking their lives in Ukraine, because they feel that the pain and suffering Ukrainians are going through is not something they can bear to watch on the sideline.

Episode 53: 7 tips for making a brand video, by 10PlusBrand.com
03:34

What is a brand video?  Why is a brand video needed?

What are the differences between a brand video and other videos?

Where can a brand video be showcased?

What assets are needed for making a brand video? How is it edited?

How long should a brand video be?

Is voice-over needed? Are acting talents necessary?

What is the budget range for a brand video?

...

As part of a book I am writing, “How to become a brand - Decode, Create, Amplify”, I will be sharing many tips for brand building. Before publishing the book, I will share some of my specific topics for paid subscribers to 10 Plus Brand’s newsletters. I will let you all know in advance before making any blogs as “for paid subscribers only”.

If you want to know the 7 tips for a brand promotional video, please sign up as paid subscribers here

The tips given as paid content, and other valuable proprietary information we are releasing every month, is at only $5/month, or $60/year. The paid content is based on years of experience in scripting, directing, filming and recording, editing and producing many brand promotional videos for insurance agencies, executive coaches, law firms, CFO and accounting services, a private museum, Silicon Valley engineering firms and technology startups, acupuncturists, interior designers, real estate brokers, and many other industrial, B2B and B2C companies, and individuals.

Next paid content for Substack subscribers will be about “How to do digital marketing and social media marketing with any budget”

A hint:

Build a solid brand foundation first, before building the “3rd floor”: a brand video.  The foundation is brand DNA decoding. The first floor is the brand’s structure, strategies, stories, in verbal narratives. The second floor is the identity items of a brand: business name, logo, sometimes a tagline or slogan, the look and feel.

The first, second “floors” will be addressed in Chapter One and Two (the blog form of which to be released later for paid newsletter subscribers).

You can see FREE sample brand videos on our website, or watch MORE brand videos produced by 10 Plus Brand, on this Youtube playlist

Episode 52: Ukraine War and Americans’ Responsibilities
10:26

The Ukraine War as an intervention, unification, inspiration, and revelation of characters, both personal and national

My older son has been serving in the US military for about 7 years. As soon as the Ukraine War broke out three weeks ago, he was deployed to a NATO country in Europe. Moments before he boarded the military plane, I said to him: “ My son, thank you for your service.” He was a little surprised to hear this from me, and I said: “In your own small ways, you are defending democracy, freedom, and our way of life.”

I don’t know about you, but for me, after watching on TV the heart-breaking human suffering and devastation in Ukraine, I started to view my daily routines with a new appreciation. I realized that what I took for granted could be taken away, like what happened overnight to the suffering Ukrainians. What was a mundane daily routine three weeks ago now seems like privilege, - things like taking a walk and watching people walking their dogs or pushing strollers, even doing dishes in my kitchen that was not torn apart or bombed to rubbles, and sleeping in my own warm bed instead of the cold floor in a bunker…

Seeing the heroic Ukrainians who would rather die to keep their freedom and their fledgling democracy, this war has awakened our consciousness about the evil of authoritarianism.

As we witness the tragic loss of lives, smoldering rubble, destroyed cities, and millions of refugees, nothing is more agonizing than the feeling that one can do nothing, other than watching peaceful and innocent people suffer, while evil and violence is being brutally perpetrated.

Like many of you, I want to do whatever is within my power to help Ukraine. Doing something, anything helps ease my own feelings of helplessness and agony, and puts my conscience at peace. So I have donated a sizable amount of money to NovaUkraine.org.

We cannot take our democracy for granted. If you don’t have the financial resources to donate any amount, each and every one of us can at least do this: improve our OWN democracy, restore America as the beacon of hope and light, and strive for a more perfect union. By exercising and participating constructively in our democracy, by being good citizens, and by building a stronger American democracy, we are sending hopeful messages to the world that those who gave their lives for freedom and democracy did not make the ultimate sacrifice in vain.

Please listen to the entire 10-minute podcast that also covered the following:

- The war has united & inspired Americans & all democracies globally

- We all shoulder the responsibility to protect , defend, and improve our democracy

- A stress test of individuals, leaders, and the free world

- “Stand for Something” - individually and nationally

Episode 51: Joanne Z. Tan Interviews Jonathan Leidy on Building Young Men Mentally, Emotionally, Physically - _Interviews of Notables & Influencers
44:19
Joanne Z Tan, CEO of 10 Plus Brand interviews Jonathan Leidy about Young Men's Ultimate Weekend that helps teenage boys grow mentally, emotionally, physically.

(Excerpt:)

Joanne Tan:

"In addition to "Interviews of Notables and Influencers", I also interview ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Today Jonathan Leidy is one of those unsung heroes. He is an ordinary person doing extraordinary things."

"One Sunday evening I was watching TV while doing dishes. And then there came Lisa ling, "This is Life". And I heard in the background, "here is 'Pork Chop'". And as soon as the so-called "Pork Chop" started to talk,... I know that voice, that's Jonathan Leidy! Okay, great job, "Pork Chop". And then Lisa Ling described what this camp is all about. And the more I listened to it, the more I felt like, wow, this is great, from my perspective of a mother to two young men, knowing their struggles, and also as a humbly-learning-parent-for-life. And also seeing this school shooting, and mass shooting, and all perpetuated by young men, I really feel compelled to invite Jonathan on my podcast. And thank you, Jonathan, for this honor and privilege."

(Jonathan Leidy:)

"...So it gives everybody the opportunity to get outdoors to break up in teams, to lead teams, to go through physical and emotional challenges. And all of that is really under the guise of, I think, above all else, getting young men interacting with one another, and really understanding what makes each other tick, and really starting to relate to one another on a level that's much deeper than they might do today, you know, just over the computer somewhere..."

Episode 49: Super Bowl 2022 Best 3 TV Commercials
04:14

This year, something peculiar happened-- previous years’ super bowl ads were all released weeks or days before the big game; this year, only about 35% of the ads have been pre-released two weeks before the game date on Feb. 13, 2022, and as of before the 56th Super Bowl, about 80% of commercials were released on the internet.

Was it because companies are afraid of not making it to our top 3 best Super Bowl list? If that’s the case, we are very flattered. But forcing people to watch poorly made ads will make your captive audience more resentful of your brand. Our sole purpose for ranking Super Bowl ads is to up YOUR game of making better commercials that truly CONNECT with people without flashy gimmicks.

Bravo to the 80% brands that have pre released their Super Bowl ads ahead of the big game!

Post game update: What a game! We stand by our prior picks, since no other ads were better than our top 3. What we picked previously are the finalists in the original order.

Our criteria for judging the best three super bowl Ads

We stick to the same criteria for the best ads, year after year:

  1. NO CELEBRITIES in the ad,
  2. No vulgarity, partisanship, bad taste and
  3. The brand’s message comes across clearly and artistically with originality & integrity.

And the 1st place winner is....

Episode 47: Joanne Z. Tan Interviews Rotten Tomatoes Co-founder on Creator Economy, Learn to Earn Education based on Web3 & NFT Metaverse - Interviews of Notables & Influencers
43:46

Web3, NFT, and Metaverse will decentralize education into learn-to-earn model, and build a creator economy, and even make movie watchers into roles they play in the movie ...

Patrick Lee, co-founder of Rotten Tomatoes, was interviewed by Joanne Z. Tan on the "Interviews of Notables and Influencers" podcast, video and blog series, where Patrick talked about these topics:

The recent Theranos Elizabeth Holmes trial, "fake it till you make it",

Silicon Valley culture,

NFT, Web3, Metaverse, their roles in a creator economy, in a new learn to earn education model,

Decentralization, blockchain, AI, AR, VR,

The future of gaming, movies and entertainment industry intersecting with Technology,...

AND, what does Patrick Lee's brand stand for?...

Patrick Lee imagined the NFT, Web3 metaverse will revolutionize "learn to earn" education model, and the entertainment, movie making world. The "play to earn" gaming model can be evolved into "learn to earn" for students: "...they're actually earning a token or NFTs that can actually be converted into money. And ideally, you could get the rich people in the world to be paying the poor people to learn."

A LOT of insights! Thank you Patrick Lee!

Being a podcast producer and host myself, for my own series “Interviews of Notables and Influencers”, I know how much work it takes to find the people to be interviewed, research, prepare, produce and edit…

On top of that, Shawn has a full time job in middle market investment banking, in mergers and acquisitions, capital markets, financial restructuring.

Like Shawn, I also have a full time job as the CEO and Branding Expert at 10 Plus Brand, Inc., a full service, award-winning brand building, content creation and digital marketing agency.

For my own 10 Plus Podcast, I invite both well known notables and influencers, billionaires, as well as ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Next month, I will feature someone who has volunteered years of service to help troubled teenage boys at a special summer camp, as well as a savvy investor who will share insights about investing money.

Below are SOME of the questions I asked Shawn during this interview:

Q-1: Could you give us a brief history about yourself?  What is your journey leading up to where you are now?

Q 2: Do you hire any help for your podcast production? Or are you doing it all by yourself?  (If yes, do you ever sleep? :)

Q 3: Tell us what got you into podcasting in the first place? Do you have Sponsors? Ads?

Q 4: What is the relationship between your investment banking career and your podcast series?

Q 5: What are the biggest challenges in continuing your podcast, episode after episode?

Q 6: Do you get emails from strangers wanting to get on your podcast? What do you do with them?

Q 7: From hosting your 110 podcast episodes, which ones took the most time and effort to prepare?

Q 8: Could you tell us 3 stories about how you secured interviews with the Silicon Valley big names?

Q 9: What have you learned from your podcast guests? Any specific stories? Did you ever disagree with your guests on air? Do you prefer edited or live?

Q 10: Did your interviews have impacted your personal and professional growth? In what ways?

Q 11: What makes you do investment banking?

Q 12:  What specific types of companies and individuals need your investment banking advice and expertise? What are your sweet spots?

Q 13:  What do you foresee you’d be, 10 years from now, down your career path?  And your personal life, if you want to share?

Question #1:

Why don’t you start a charitable foundation with open source accounting yourself, if you rightfully don’t trust bureaucracies like the UN?

Question #2:

If you don’t want a dog-eat-dog, “beanstalks-burn-beans” world (explained below), why don’t you create an alternative digital open forum for people to freely help and give to one another, and come together to save our Earth? Isn’t this more meaningful than sending humans to the barren and lifeless Mars? What makes you think that the Martian environment will change humankind for the better?

Question #3:

DO BOTH - uplift science and humanity, the yin and yang of each other, can you and will you?

Question #4:

Could you answer our questions on "Interviews of Notables and Influencers"?

He was INC Magazines’ Entrepreneur of the Year in 2009,  a CNBC top Innovator of the Decade, World Economic Forum Tech Pioneer, Chair of Silicon Valley Forum, featured for 5 years on TechTV’s Silicon Spin. While he has a technical background with 93 worldwide patents, Mr. Surace led pioneering work on the first cellular data smartphone (AirCommunicator), the first plastic multi chip semiconductor packages, the first human-like AI virtual assistant (Portico), soundproof drywall, high R-value windows, AI-driven building management technology, AI-driven quality assurance automation, and the window/energy retrofits of the Empire State Building and NY Stock Exchange.

Kevin is also an accomplished music director,  conductor, Broadway show and musicals producer, and percussionist. He’s Actively developing high quality "digital theater" virtual musical entertainment using green screen studios and advanced digital designs.

Kevin is CTO of Appvance.ai which has developed groundbreaking AI based autonomous software testing in a SAAS platform. He is also involved with companies addressing: AI & Robotics, QA automation/security, IOT, subscription models, sustainability, and sleep tech.

As a branding expert, l can’t help branding Kevin as: “A Renaissance man, in a Renaissance Age.”

1) Tell me your personal journey, about why, what, how you get to be where you are, today?   2) Among all the things you have done, what are your most important and most proud of?   3) Failure is the mother to success.  What are the most profound “failures” that you have learned from, that you’d like to share with the world?   4) You invest in startups, any unicorns? What made you spot them as the “unicorns” before they were successful?   5) AI - what do you think about the prospects of AI becoming masters of humanity?   6) This Pandemic is only the beginning, there will be more.  What do you think the world should do, to be more prepared? What are your predictions about the future after this Pandemic?     7) Describe, in details, your vision of the world with AI, social media, digital currency, 2 years from now, 5 years from now, 10 years from now, 20 years from now   8) I am an opera fan. This season I was delighted to watch the New York Met Opera live performance in a Century 14 movie theater near my home, with surround sound effects, large screen, reclining chair (warmed up), AND social distancing too, I really don’t feel like taking the BART to San Francisco Opera House, which I did for 25 years!  I am afraid the SF Opera Box Office will suffer a decline in ticket sales, so will many cities’ opera houses throughout the world, since the Met is streamed to around 27 countries, more or less, at many local cinemas. Question #1: Do you agree that technology helping with monopolies (in this case, the Met) at the loss of local cities’ opera houses, or musicals’ performances? And isn’t it consistent with the entire human society’s trend toward monopolies, such as Google, Amazon, Apple and Microsoft, as well as in the political climate of autocracy vs democracy?   9) Climate change: How to address it?  To what extent are traditional ways of thinking, governing, investing, living… must change, and change fast?   10) The sorry state of US politics:  Do you think the two-party system is collapsing into its own dead end?  What do you think of the rank-choice voting that is used in New York's mayoral election and another state's governor's election?    11) What does “Kevin Surace Brand” stand for? What do you want the world to remember you, after you kick the bucket?

The following are the summaries of questions Joanne Z. Tan asked Michael Van Every during this one-hour interview on Oct 5, 2021, for the podcast series "Interviews of Notables & Influencers":

Introduction:

For 15 years, Michael Van Every has been the President of Republic Urban Properties (“RUP” for short), one of the largest commercial real estate developers in Silicon Valley. It is also the Bay Area flagship of the Republic Family of Companies, known for developing institutional-quality real estate throughout the United States.

Michael works with Federal, State, and Local governments on the creation and development of ‘smart growth’ projects, such as master-planned communities near transportation hubs; urban mixed-use projects near major employment centers; and innovative, public-private partnerships.

In his 25 years of representing major institutional and private real estate developers in the greater Bay Area, Michael has led complicated projects from land acquisition to completion. Under his leadership, RUP has gained national attention for its Transit Orientated Development (TOD) projects at key transit stations, working as the premier public-private partner with many transit authorities across California.

Michael has been involved with the planning, financing, construction, and delivery of 1,238 multifamily units and 145,000 square feet of mixed-use commercial space, 380 hotels rooms, 151,000 square feet of office, and 120,000 square feet of retail in various stages of development, at $1.5 billion in value.

A third-generation San Jose native, Michael is an active member of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group.

  1. Tell us about yourself, your personal stories, your family:  Why do you do what you do? How did your journey end up here? And where is it going?
  2. What is the most important thing that you value?
  3. What are your biggest accomplishments, and the biggest learning lessons/failures
  4. COVID: how is it affecting commercial and residential real estate development? - Office buildings, retails, hotels, apartments, housing, public transit, mixed use projects, etc. How do you view the new remote work impacting new commercial office development?
  5. Will the future development of office space have habitational space associated with it?
  6. Wildfires, climate change, California’s water shortage:  How are these three impacting both commercial and residential real estate development?
  7. Silicon Valley is full of world’s largest monopolies such as Google. Google has been buying land in the Valley.  How has that impacted your business?
  8. What messages do you have for Silicon Valley giants like Google, Apple, Facebook, Cisco, Oracle, related to the current COVID remote working situations?  And related to all their other monopolistic powers, more than COVID’s return to work issues?
  9. With your deep roots in Silicon Valley for generations, what in your experience makes or breaks your deals in the valley?
  10. You said that “Government is 100% responsible for the housing shortage”, please explain why.
  11. Will the increase in warehouses due to the “Amazon Effect” permanently continue, while the decrease in brick and mortar retail services lasts beyond the pandemic?
  12. What are the challenges for realizing internal ROI for real estate investors?
  13. Imagine yourself as someone with money to invest in real estate. What would you invest in right now: industrial properties such as warehouses? Residential townhouses? Duplex? Triplex? Quadplex? Single family homes? Land only?...
  14. WHERE would you advise COMMERCIAL real estate investors to invest, if all things are being equal, in Silicon Valley? Or elsewhere? Why?
  15. Is AI, smart city, and sustainability technology changing the way the buildings are built?
  16. What do you know about “The One” in LA?
  17. How do you think the Biden Administration’s infrastructure spending can help with real estate development?
  18. What can the federal government do to ease the labor shortage?

  20. What does your brand stand for?

The following are the summaries of questions Joanne Z. Tan asked Tim Draper during this one-hour interview on Sept. 23, 2021:

Crypto and Bitcoin fluctuated wildly in the last 4 months after our first interview. ... Other than China’s cracking down on Bitcoin and crypto, do you see any SYSTEMIC flaws in the crypto’s trading mechanism that have caused the wild fluctuation? Examples: Yesterday’s 90% drop of Bitcoin on Pyth was caused by computer botching basic math, the day before, the “blackout” at Solana, and the use of robot traders in high frequency crypto trading… What are your thoughts about these systemic flaws, or phenomena, or “growing pain”?

It seems that Bitcoin holders are primarily in two large camps: first, highly educated, intelligent and financially secure; second, herd mentality blind followers, some of whom are gamblers. Is that another contributing factor for its extreme volatility since there are far more blind followers than seasoned investors? If so, what can be done about it?

Is the lack of circulation and liquidity another reason for its volatility?

What caused the malfunction of El Salvador's launch of Bitcoin?

Ray Dalio recently said that the value of Bitcoin is “imbued” rather than “intrinsic”. Gold’s value is “intrinsic” according to him; the “imbued” value of Bitcoin, he cited, was at least based on the impressive fact that it has never been hacked. He didn’t mention that Bitcoin has a limited edition capped at 21 million coins. What do you think of his characterization?

Has the definition of “money” changed in any way with the birth and growth of Bitcoin? Does Bitcoin-ownership vs gold-ownership give Bitcoin owners more responsibility, participation, and other new elements of ownership?

Ayn Rand brand of libertarian capitalism, in my opinion, was based on the dated view that the world’s resources are almost limitless, an idealized understanding of a limitless potential of capitalism. Now, living with global warming, and the realization that first, resources are limited, and second, the window of opportunities is rapidly closing; actions, NOW, by NATIONAL governments are truly needed (in addition to private actions), to reverse climate change. My question is: Could Bitcoin undermine national governments’ control of central banking and economic policies, particularly related to governmental spending on sustainable industries?

Is there another way to link the usage of crypto directly with sustainability industries?

In China a couple of months ago, a great flood happened in a large city, there was no power, no internet. People who were so used to digital payment found themselves needing paper cash for everything. What do you think of its implication to Bitcoin’s use and circulation when there is no power?

Assuming that you do NOT prefer to live in a country without governments and borders, what is the “right place” for bitcoin to fit in? Co-exist with fiat? If the value of Bitcoin is priced and based on the value of fiat, what makes Bitcoin immune to inflation?

You said in the last interview with me that China’s government-issued digital wallet is a threat to Bitcoin IF their digital wallet is accepted outside China, please first explain, and then suggest what can be done about it.

Do you think technology has borders?

Is crypto a threat to the US government's national security?

Regulatory scrutiny is being ratcheted up by an SEC Commission chair who says he believes it’s better to be proactive on digital currencies than to react following a crisis. Michael Hsu, the acting chief of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, argued Tuesday that cryptocurrencies and decentralized finance may be evolving into threats to the financial system in much the same way certain derivatives brought near collapse in 2008. 3 questions:

Does that mean that Bitcoin and other cryptos are more likely to be treated by the government as a security rather than currency?

In the last interview, you said that Bitcoin is more like a currency, have you changed your mind?

Do you reserve tax payment for all your Bitcoin capital gain, since 2014, if and when you sell some portion of it, or just use some of it for purchasing goods and services?

Taxes and regulations ... do you think being taxed and regulated will make Bitcoin lose some of its “incorruptibility”, “transferability”, and “uninflatability”?

What do you foresee as the worst possible scenario to Bitcoin, other than a solar flare that wipes out all digital records and civilization based on electric power on Earth?

What do you foresee as the best possible outcome of Bitcoin? How many decades or years will it take us to get there?

What do you think about the corporate monopolies such as Google, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon...becoming more powerful than the government in certain aspects?

I ask everyone in my interview this question: What does the “Tim Draper Brand” stand for?

In 2018, when she was renewing Nike’s seven-year sponsorship while being pregnant, Nike cut her pay by 70% and would not make any guarantees if her performance dropped due to giving birth. How Allyson Felix responded was significant in five ways.

As a brand builder and marketer, I am thrilled that she won her last Olympic medals in Tokyo running in her own brand of running shoes, “Saysh”. 3 Value Bombs

1) Make sure that the company is built on a solid foundation. Take your time. Make sure you have the DNA sequence mapped out for your company, then build the structure, strategies, and stories.

2) Building a company is like building a bonfire. Every log needs to burn to its fullest and contribute to a spectacular bonfire. To keep it burning, you need to keep fueling the fire with the best quality logs.

3) To retain top quality talents, CEOs need to be humble but inspiring. Humble, meaning having respect with people that have expertise that you don’t have and know that you cannot do it all. Have the ability to inspire and let people shine, not being a micromanager.

Show Notes

Today’s Audio MASTERCLASS: A Unicorn Builds a Brand, Not Just a Book of Business.

– Joanne shares something that she believes about becoming successful that most people disagree with.

  • Success is a process of growth, not an event. It is a journey, not a destination.
  • There’s nothing wrong with dreaming big. The desire to become rich quickly alone cannot get you very far.
  • You need vision not associated with money to inspire yourself.

– Joanne explains and gives an example about getting yourself a team and having a culture born out of it.

  • You may have tons of money but sooner or later, it’s going to haunt you.
  • The teams buy what the product can do to change the world in a positive way.
  • Buying in is not only about the money but also what the product stands for that inspires people and makes the world a better place.

– Being a stargazer or a firefighter—two interesting words, but what does it mean?

  • Being a stargazer is not losing track where you’re going. Always look at your North star and align companies toward your vision, culture, how you motivate employees, how to inspire customers. That will propel you to the right track.
  • You cannot scale/grow if you are not vision-driven.

– Becoming a rockstar, how do we do that?

  • Dare to dream big. Dare to think of your brand as a great brand.
  • Start with a grand vision and stay on course with that vision.
  • Prepare yourself to become a rockstar. Even if you fail, what a grand way it is for failing. You did not waste your time because you’re pursuing your dream, the greatest of yourself, and pushing your limit to get yourself out of your comfort zone.
  • Your vision is more than just a quarterly result.

– Building a power brand.

  • You need to fight each battle in order to win the war.
  • Know what is your mission, then your vision that is out of this world. Declare something associated with your company’s vision. Then have a mission of what you want your company to become.
  • They help brands establish vision, their essence, persona, strategy, structures, then help to stay on course, and amplify the brand messaging internally and externally.

– Hiring people smarter than you—how do we do that and why?

  • Building a company is like building a bonfire. Every log needs to burn to its fullest and contribute to a spectacular bonfire. To keep it burning, you need to keep fueling the fire with the best quality logs.
  • The metric for a successful CEO is inspiring, getting onboard top talents, and then growing together.
  • People are spending their precious lifetime with you, trusting not only you as a person but also your dream.
  • To retain top quality talents, CEOs need to be humble but inspiring. Humble, meaning having respect with people that have expertise that you don’t have and know that you cannot do it all. Have the ability to inspire and let people shine, not being a micromanager.

– Joanne’s key takeaway and call to action to Fire Nation.

  • Make sure that the company is built on a solid foundation. Take your time. Make sure you have the DNA sequence mapped out for your company, then build the structure, strategies, and stories.
  • Execution takes discipline. Make sure you motivate and mobilize experts to coordinate and execute the vision of the company.

Episode 26: Can the social media “likes”, ”shares”, ”comments” increase a post‘s Google ranking? How is herd mentality related to popularity?
07:52

Is your content valuable measured by "likes", "shares", & comments, real, or fake? What makes a post rank on Google?

A Podcast by Joanne Z. Tan, Founder & CEO of 10 Plus Brand, Inc.

On social media, not all "likes" are phony, but there are definitely phony "likes". Fishing for “likes” rather than giving value is a waste of time for both the “fishers” and the “fished”.

Questions for the listeners: Is it true that the more likes, shares, comments a post gets, even phony likes, the higher the Google ranking for the post will be? Is Google so easily fooled? Anyone who knows about this, please feel free to leave your comments to educate me and the rest of the reading audience.

The number of likes a post receives does not entirely reflect the value of the content, there are five reasons.

A brand is its vision, and the vision makes all the difference between Julia Child and Anthony Bourdain in presenting food and cooking, between branding Nike as sneakers instead of a symbol for human aspiration, between a computing machine rather than a brand for excellence called Apple, and between an electric car vs. humankind’s free orbiting vehicle in outer space.

Like Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown”, a successful brand, say Nike, is not just about a pair of sneakers.  Other brands like Apple and Tesla do the same: to engage a brand’s target audience to experience, to create memories and affinity with the brand.

Episode 24: Crypto, Bitcoin, Elon Musk, Inflation, China & the US, Women...Tim Draper Interviewed by Joanne Z. Tan of 10 Plus Brand

Tim Draper, who invested $19 million in Bitcoin in 2014 predicts its price at $250,000/Bitcoin in 2022-23 and a lot more.

Out of 60 questions, we only had time for 34. But Tim said that if there are enough sharing by the audience, he will answer the remaining 24 questions.  PLEASE SHARE!

Here are the 34 questions Joanne Z. Tan asked Tim and he answered:

  1. As one of the earliest investors in digital currency, after paying  $19 MM for Bitcoin in 2014, how would you describe Bitcoin’s growth journey so far? Would you say that in 2014 Bitcoin was an “infant”? And now in 2021, a “teenager”? If so, as a 6th grader or a 10th grader?
  2. How “mature” is Bitcoin and crypto currency? How many years before Bitcoin and crypto as a whole reach “maturity”? How long will it take for crypto assets (currency and block chain) to permeate the small business markets?
  3. Elon Musk bought more than one billion worth of Bitcoins for Tesla in February 2021, then he voiced the issue about unsustainable use of energy for mining Bitcoin, which is more than all other types of crypto coins (I don’t want to compare carbon footprints of Bitcoin’s with Fiat’s and traditional banking institutions’, to keep it “orange to orange”.) Would you agree that Bitcoin is indeed a lot more energy consuming than Ether, Dogecoin, and all other altcoins and meme coins out there?
  4. About Elon Musk’s support for Dogecoin: Unlike Bitcoin that has limited quantity, Dogecoin has no limit thus lacking the “scarcity” element as one of the intrinsic values. Do you think scarcity, albeit man-made, is important to crypto?
  5. Is volatility, as shown in the last few weeks of crypto’s roller coastering ride, an inherent trait of crypto?
  6. Is there a correlation between stock market volatility and crypto currencies’ volatility?
  7. In addition to the element of scarcity, what are other intrinsic values associated with crypto? Is traceability, (thanks to blockchain technology) that enables transparency of the source and all prior ownership, another unique value proposition that crypto has that fiat does not?
  8. Now adding to scarcity and traceability, smart contracts can be added to crypto tokens such as Ether and the new kid on the block, ICT (Internet Computer Token) for various apps, would that be an indispensable or merely supplemental character for crypto?
  9. Do you think smart contracts make crypto tokens more valuable?
  10. As a tree-hugging environmentalist and an extremely concerned advocate for sustainability, I do agree with Elon Musk, and I would like to see adding the 4th element to crypto’s unique value proposition: sustainability. What do you think?
  11. How would you describe crypto? Is it a currency? Is it a commodity? Is it a type of security? Is it all of the above, depending what utility is imbued into each particular crypto?
  12. Do you believe Bitcoin is the “digital gold”?  If yes, will it rival and even surpass gold?
  13. About inflation. Technological innovation is usually a force to counter inflation.  What is your assessment of the likelihood of PROLONGED inflation in the US in the next couple of years or even beyond? And Globally too?
  14. Is crypto a safe haven for protecting cash from devaluation caused by inflation? If yes, why, if no, why?
  15. I can see the value of using dollar-backed crypto in countries where inflation is out of control, like in Venezuela - folks can bypass the banks and get their money stabilized by crypto. But for Americans, what is the use of having dollar-backed crypto?
  16. If traceability, transparency is one of the cornerstones for crypto’s intrinsic value, privacy is at odds with transparency.  But some tokens are offering privacy protection, what do you think of that?
  17. What do you think of the many varieties of crypto coins, Meme coins, even “shit coins” out there?
  18. Peter Thiel was quoted saying in January 2021 that “Crypto is a secret financial weapon of the Chinese government”, then he was in the news issuing his own token and even creating his own exchange, - will you be issuing a Draper Coin and even having your own exchange too?
  19. Is it a reasonable prediction that after the crypto market as a whole will flush out all the “junk” coins and unsophisticated speculators, perhaps half a dozen “finalists” coins will be left on the crypto market?  Will that lead to some level of stabilization?
  20. From an average Joe investor’s perspective, is the best crypto coin yet to come, since technology is evolving, and more smart contracts are being created for more apps, and more sustainable ways of mining coins will be adopted?
  21. In addition to all 4 “cornerstones” for crypto I talked about above, do you believe that crypto must be in circulation, must be used in transactions, in order to become viable and competitive with fiat and other traditional currencies?
  22. If yes, what is preventing crypto from being used and circulated more widely?
  23. Would you agree that even without sufficient circulation, crypto is still a store of value, like land or diamond?
  24. You predicted that Bitcoin would reach $220,000 - $250,000 in 2023, what is your basis for such prediction?
  25. You said that you will eat a raw egg if Bitcoin does not reach $250,000 in 2023, - I’m willing to eat a sour lemon on my show (without the peel) if it does, - can we make a deal? Do you dare to eat a raw egg on my show, for the fun of it?
  26. The irrevocability of crypto transactions seems like a double edged sword. To err is human, everyone makes typos and mistakes, and if someone types in an amount with two zeros more than the actual amount, mistakenly sending $10,000 when only $100 is intended, there is no way to reverse that mistake.  Do you foresee any remedies?
  27. Any other “black swan” for crypto, in your opinion?
  28. Who will be the biggest winners of crypto? Early investors?
  29. Who will be the biggest losers?
  30. Do you believe that crypto has the potential to replace traditional currencies including fiat, as an independent currency?
  31. Traditional currencies and fiat have existed without crypto, do you think crypto can exist without fiat?
  32. What kind of relationship crypto now has with fiat? Interdependent? Co-dependent? Symbiosis (you scratch my back and I scratch yours)?
  33. Do you think the US government will allow crypto to co-exist with fiat?
  34. Do you think the government needs to regulate crypto, as the SEC regulates securities?

A powerful brand should have vast room for adaptability and growth.  To keep running twice as fast to get anywhere, as Lewis Carroll said, it must first know exactly where it wants to go, and how to fuel its run with exhaling the obsolete and inhaling fresh oxygen, constantly. Not only must a power brand always be relevant to its changing and evolving target audience, but it must also lead its target audience, inspire them, learn from them, and enrich their lives.

In an ideal situation, the brand and its target audience feed off each other's ideas and energy, somewhat like a rockstar feeding off his/her fans' enthusiasm.

A brand is like a house. It needs to be remodeled, repaired, and maintained.A leading and influential brand must be always relevant to its changing and evolving target audience in content, and must learn from, inspire, and enrich their lives.

We last talked about the ultimate macro of branding, by leveraging the Big Bang, to expand yourself rather than shrinking like a black hole.

Look deep into DNA, and align your actions with your purposes, the raison d’etre, - the most important reason for someone or something's existence, - staying true to your “brand DNA”.

To build a brand is the same as growing a purposeful life. Step by step, line by line, brick by brick, just as a tiny spider spins a tiny bit of thread to build a beautiful web a thousand times more impactful than itself.

Brands need to be readjusted, realigned, and reinvented.

That’s the only way to be in sync with the ultimate macro AND the extreme micro of the universe, the cradle of life and the final purpose of life.

We at 10 Plus Brand are your brand’s partner from birth, during growth, and in transformation.

Julie Castro Abrams is the founder, CEO and chair of How Women Lead, a network of 14,000 women. They are top executives, leaders, current and aspiring board members and investors. Julie is also the GP of How Women Invest, an angel investing fund that has invested millions in women owned startups.

Recently, Julie was featured on Forbes magazine for her accomplishments on leading How Women Invest. She's also on one of the task forces of California Governor Gavin Newsom, "the first partners" initiatives. The interviewer, Joanne Tan, is personally involved with How Women Lead for over two and a half years, both as a member of the Leadership Committee and through helping aspiring executives to get on corporate boards, with their board bios, LinkedIn profiles and resumes.

Joanne describes Julie: "I have come to know Julie really well, and admire her passion, talent, brilliance, leadership, authenticity, and business savviness. All of these are inspiring to me and to lots of women."

The tide raises ALL boats.  Diversity is the tidal wave. Diversity increases the whole pie for everyone, and everyone stands to benefit.

Like it or not, America will be the most diverse country in the world and nobody can turn the tide. For those who don't like to be politically correct all the time, - I get you; but, there is a right way and a wrong way of dealing with diversity. Either you ride the tidal wave, or better, lead the wave, or you are being dragged kicking and screaming and end up being a “loser”, and get drowned by the inevitable.

Learn from the true leaders like Julia Abrams, it's not a waste of your time.
