44: Are You Out of Bounds?
15:26

Have you ever thought of your marriage as being like a football game? Probably not, but here’s what they have in common: staying within the boundaries is important if you want to win.

So, how do you avoid going out of bounds in a marriage? I am discussing the important boundaries that every marriage needs by covering seven of the most common problems married couples encounter because they fail to set boundaries.

Discover how negative patterns of behavior, communication, and mindset can ultimately destroy your marriage if you don't take action now, and learn why boundaries are not meant to stifle you but to create healthy and necessary limitations on how you speak to and treat your spouse when times get tough.

If you’re crossing the line in your marriage, this episode will enlighten and empower you to change your ways and save your marriage before it’s too late.

43: Boundaries with Control
21:28

Freedom and love are the foundation of a good marriage, so why do some people seek to control their spouses? What does control look like? And if you're the controlling spouse, is it too late to break this damaging habit?

These are some of the questions that we’re answering in this episode. We’re taking a look at some of the different ways we try to control each other in marriage (sometimes without even realizing we’re doing it!)

If you recognize yourself in any of the dynamics I’m describing in this episode, I want you to think about what you can do to change. I’m offering some solutions at the end, so make sure you stay tuned to hear some ideas on what you can do to break controlling habits.

What is the number one thing that impacts your marriage and business that most people don’t talk about?

Your values. That’s right, your values are your true north and the foundation for how you conduct yourself in business and marriage.

We all experience conflict in marriage, but if your value systems are total opposites, you’re going to struggle.

I don’t think we talk about this enough, which is why this episode is so important. I’m talking about how your values show up in your everyday life and sharing an exercise that you can use to discover your top values and those of your spouse and staff.

If you want to get clear on what your values are, tune in to this episode.

Do you ever look at people who seem to have perfectly balanced businesses and marriages and wonder how they do it? What’s their secret?

39: How to Make Genuine Connections in the Way That God Intended Us To with Amanda Christine
35:50

Do you find it hard to make genuine connections with people in our day and age?

We live in a world where it can feel like everyone is hiding behind a screen, and the pandemic made it harder than ever to make in-person connections. I’m joined by Amanda Christine to talk about why it’s so important for us to be making meaningful connections, and she’s sharing her practical tips on how to do it. She’s also sharing why making connections is something that God intended us to do. Have you ever thought about it that way?

Amanda has mastered the art of asking the right questions to get people to open up. I know this because when we met I told her things I would never normally tell to someone I just met!

Amanda is the founder of the Society of Women Business Owners (SOWBO), a support group recognized for connecting, exciting, and challenging female entrepreneurs. Through one-to-one business coaching sessions, classroom-style training, and live events, Amanda helps women achieve measurable results while not losing sight of their unique influence and greater purpose. Amanda wants to live in a world where success is measured by genuine relationships, messy vulnerability, and passionate risk-taking. When she’s not working with business owners, you can find Amanda sipping coffee and intensely reading or writing at her favorite local coffee shop.

If you want to become someone like Amanda who brings people together and makes them feel comfortable enough to open up, you’re in the right place.

37: The #1 Reason for Conflict in Marriage with an Entrepreneur
17:21

What do you think is the number one reason for conflict in a marriage with an entrepreneur?

I’ll give you a hint: It’s not finances or communication. Those are some big ones too, but they aren’t the reason we are talking about today.

You’ve probably noticed from listening to the podcast that there is a lot of crossover between marriage and business, and you’ll see that pattern emerge again in this episode.

There are characteristics that entrepreneurs have that make them successful in business, but those same characteristics can also be the very thing that can bring down their marriages if they're not careful.

If you want help managing conflict in your marriage with an entrepreneur, this episode is the one for you.

36: Vulnerability: Why It’s Important in Business and Relationships with Lianne Kim
01:01:42

“Vulnerability” is a buzzword that we hear fairly often these days, but why is it so important in building a business or nurturing a relationship? Vulnerability can add a level of depth and connection that would otherwise be difficult to reach.

In this episode of Couch Time with Amy Wine, I am chatting with my friend and business coach, Lianne Kim, about why vulnerability has been essential in her business.

Lianne Kim is the Founder & CEO of Mamas & Co. which is an online community of moms who run their own businesses. In the community, moms connect, support and inspire one another through sharing their experiences and goals.

We get into why vulnerability is important for being a leader, reasons why people hold back from vulnerability, how to share from a place of service instead of oversharing, the disconnection that comes from avoiding vulnerability, and so much more.

I know that this discussion will show you that putting your authentic self out there can be a rewarding and enriching way to improve your connection with others, so tune in!

35: Emotional Unavailability: Understanding His Side
34:03

When yelling and silence no longer work on your husband, is it time to give up? How can you establish a connection with someone who is emotionally unavailable?

In this episode of Couch Time with Amy Wine, I’m joined by my husband, Jon, because I think it's about time we hear his side of things. We talk about how our conflicting family backgrounds have ingrained certain habits and values in us that we have had to unlearn to save our marriage.

One of these things, and the topic of this episode, is emotional unavailability, so if you want to learn why men are sometimes emotionally unavailable and how you can communicate in their language, this episode is really helpful.

Listen in as Jon and I reveal some secret thoughts for the first time, hear how reactions can mean so much in a conversation, how it can be OK not to be understood all the time, and how to put more emphasis on being accepted and loved.

It's not about perfection but growth and celebrating your small victories together as husband and wife. Tune in to start tackling this in your own marriage!

34: Kicking Negative Sentiment Override Out of Your Marriage
20:16

Do conversations with your partner turn into arguments without you meaning them to? Do you find yourself criticizing or thinking the worst of them without even realizing it?

In this episode, we’re taking a look at an example of how negative feelings can escalate in a marriage. This is not an uncommon problem, so if you’re struggling with this in your marriage, know that you’re not alone.

We’re talking about something called “negative sentiment override” and how it can cause things to go from good to bad to worse in a relationship. It’s when negative sentiment overrides positive interactions or memories and makes it hard to see the good in someone.

I’m sharing some action items for you to implement to overcome the negative sentiment override and get closer to your partner. Never underestimate the power of gratitude, quality time, addressing the problem, forgiveness, vulnerability, and accountability.

Tune in to take a deeper look at each of them.

33: The 7th Type of God-Given Rest: Relational Rest
14:07

Do you sometimes find yourself craving the company of other people? Small moments of connection with the people in your life have a big impact.

Sometimes you might feel isolated and disconnected from others, even when you’re surrounded by people. This sense of separation has a destructive effect on your ability to rest.

When you’re feeling this way, you’ll probably want to rely on others to make you feel supported and seen, but the secret to relational rest is learning to meet your own needs so that you aren’t dependent on others. That’s what we’re digging into this episode.

If you feel alone, have a hard time making friends, or hide behind a mask because you fear rejection, this is for you.

32: The 6th Type of God-Given Rest: Visionary Rest
10:05

Have you ever heard of visionary rest? Probably not, and that’s okay!

If you’re just joining us over here on the podcast, we’ve been talking about the 7 types of rest God designed you to have, and this episode is all about number 6: visionary rest. If you haven’t listened to the other 5 episodes in this series so far, you can go back and catch those any time you want!

Visionary rest is the type of rest that gives you room in your mind and schedule to dream, create, and wonder. It allows for the white space in your life to broaden, and let’s face it, couldn’t we all use a little more of that white space?

This type of rest lets you focus on planting seeds and watching them bloom and allows you to be in the moment without the pressure to perform.

If that sounds like something you could use more of in your life, don’t miss this episode.

31: The 5th Type of God-Given Rest: Spiritual Rest
13:17

What does spiritual rest mean to you? To me, spiritual rest is all about finding rest wherever you are.

In this episode, I’m sharing a story about a physical place where I find spiritual rest, and how I bring that place with me wherever I go. After all, spiritual rest isn’t found in one specific place, it’s found within.

This episode is all about the 5th of the 7 types of rest God designed us to have. If you’re just joining us in this series, don’t worry! You can listen to these 7 episodes in any order, so when you finish this one, go back and catch the last 4 covering physical, sensory, mental, and emotional rest.

If you want to find out what spiritual rest is, how you can find rest wherever you are, and how this type of rest can heal you, then don’t miss this episode.

30: The 4th Type of God-Given Rest: Emotional Rest
11:50

Have you been taught to shelf your emotions?

Many of us have learned to hide our emotions either as a skill in our professional lives or as a coping mechanism. Turns out, your emotions were never meant to be bottled up. If you bottle up your emotions and never let them out to see the light of day, you’re limiting your ability to heal.

If this is something you know you do, you’re probably in need of emotional rest. Hiding your emotions or a part of yourself is draining! I’m here to help you get in tune with your emotions and get the emotional rest that you need.

If talking about your emotions makes you want to break out in hives, this episode is important for you to hear.

29: The 3rd Type of God-Given Rest: Mental Rest
14:33

Do you have a hard time shutting off your brain?

You’re not the only one. In this episode, we’re talking about why it’s so important to declutter your brain and how to do it.

We are working our way through each of the 7 types of God-given rest across 7 episodes, and this episode is all about rest type number 3 which is mental rest.

Much like my desk, our minds are full of clutter all day every day. When you learn how to tidy up your mind and release all the junk, it’s life-changing.

This is one of the areas of rest that I struggle with the most, so trust me when I say I get it, but I hope that I can share what I’ve learned with you so that you can get the mental rest you need.

If your mind is constantly racing and you can’t get a break from your thoughts, this is the episode you need.

28: The 2nd Type of God-Given Rest: Sensory Rest
12:17
I want you to come to the beach with me.

The beach is my favorite place, and we’re going to visualize it together at the beginning of this episode to get a little sensory rest.

I'm back with another episode in our series on rest, and we’re moving on to the second type of rest: sensory.

There was a time when life moved slower and we could enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of living. Now, life moves so fast it’s a blur of those sights, sounds, and smells everywhere we turn. Excessive exposure to nonstop sensory information leaves us exhausted and leads to us taking our senses for granted. We tune out our senses in our overly-busy days. If you can learn to rest from a sensory perspective, you’ll be able to enjoy your senses again instead of being overwhelmed by them.

If you’ve noticed you have an increased sensitivity to touch and sound, you crave more processed foods, your eyes feel strained, or you struggle to enjoy events like concerts or firework displays, this episode is for you.

27: The 1st Type of God-Given Rest: Physical Rest
13:41
Did you know that sleep is not considered rest?

I’m the queen of insomnia, so this is not my favorite topic, but we need to talk about sleep.

Over the next seven episodes, we’re going to talk about the seven types of rest that God designed for you. We’re doing one a week so that you have a whole week to think about and work on each one.

We’re starting with this episode on physical rest. Physical rest is broken down even further into two different types, so I’m going to cover what the types of physical rest are, what they look like, and the roles they play in your life.

If you have a hard time getting enough sleep at night, or you always feel tired during the day, this is for you.

26: From Crowded To-Do Lists to Purposeful Weeks
15:32

What would you do if you had more time in your week?

This episode is your guide to creating a purposeful week. I’m taking you step-by-step through the process of taking your chaotic schedule and turning it into your dream schedule.

This is for you if you’re overwhelmed, overworked, and can’t fit one more thing on your schedule. I know how it feels when you start writing down everything you have to do and you realize you’re never going to fit it all in. Sometimes my to-do lists have to-do lists.

The truth is, you can't always fit it all in. You have to decide what is truly important to you and what you can take out of your schedule because it’s just taking up time you wish you could be spending on something else.

This process of creating a purposeful week is the number one thing that has changed my life, so if you need to get your schedule under control, tune in.

25: How My Husband and I Improved Our Communication and Prevented Stonewalling
25:31

So, you’ve identified stonewalling in your relationship… what now?

In this episode, I’m joined by my partner in crime, Jon, to talk about how stonewalling has shown up in our marriage. Recently, I sprung it on him that I wanted to take a month-long trip. Turns out that communicating our intentions and expectations for this trip was a little challenging, and what did that lead to? You guessed it: stonewalling.

You’re going to hear how Jon and I have healthy conversations about things that once would have caused huge arguments and hurt feelings in our relationship. Miscommunication from time to time is inevitable, but I want to give you the tools you need to prevent those miscommunications from blowing out of proportion.

If you don’t know what stonewalling is, the last episode of the podcast was all about it, so you might want to go back and catch that one before this one.

If you’re looking for ways to improve your relationship with your partner, this is for you.

24: Is Stonewalling Causing Your Relationship Problems?
14:07

Have you ever heard of stonewalling?

Stonewalling is avoiding conversations or refusing to talk to someone. It can be used unintentionally as a coping mechanism to minimize or avoid conflict, but it can also be used to manipulate or control a partner.

You can see why it’s important to know what it is and what it looks like so that you can determine where it shows up in your life. Maybe someone is stonewalling you or maybe you’re stonewalling someone else without really meaning to. This episode is going to help you figure out why you might be stonewalling and what to do about it.

We’re going to look at three important questions: How are you stonewalling yourself? How are you stonewalling your spouse, children, or coworkers? How are you stonewalling God?

If you want to improve the relationships in your life, this is an episode you’re not going to want to miss.

22: The Gift of Being You
16:30
Why do we feel like we have to hide who we are?

Putting an honest version of yourself out into the world can be scary, but it’s not worth hiding your true self. Before you can think about putting yourself out there though, you have to know who you are.

I’m using this episode as an opportunity to sit down with you and talk about the gift of being yourself. I’m talking about God’s love for you and the power of building an identity around the knowledge that God loves you. 19: Why I Detest the Word Balance
23:13

Do you feel like you’re on a never-ending search for balance in your life?

We’re constantly being sold this idea of “balance” as the secret to a happy life, but I don't believe in it.

This episode is all about why I detest the word “balance.” I’m telling you why I think the word “balance” is completely misused, and suggesting a word we should use instead.

Guess what? Not everything in life will be equally balanced at all times and that’s okay! The truth is, not everything in your life needs to be equally balanced. What’s more important is that you are scheduling things in your life with intention and creating habits that make sense for you.

If you’re tired of beating yourself up over not having a perfectly balanced life, this is for you.

For a lot of mompreneurs, that’s the dream. Today’s guest, Ashley Shaw, knows all about the highs and lows of working with your spouse, and she’s here on the podcast sharing some of the most valuable lessons she’s learned.

Ashley also knows what it’s like to have a baby whilst managing a business and she’s touching on that experience in this episode too.

Now she's dedicated to teaching others how to become successful social sellers and experience the same freedom in their own lives.

14: You Are Not Qualified to Speak About Jesus in Your Online Course
22:44

What qualifications do you need to have to speak about Jesus online?

I used to be afraid to share my whole self online because of what other people might say. Someone once told me that I’m not qualified to speak about Jesus, but I believe that anybody who loves Jesus is qualified to speak about him. That’s why I do, and thankfully, I’m not afraid of it anymore.

If you’ve been here for a while, you know that I love helping high-achieving, Jesus-loving women design a life they love, but that wasn’t always the case. In this episode, I’m sharing a little bit of my journey from hiding parts of myself to being my fully-authentic self and why I choose to talk about Jesus even though some people might say I’m not qualified to.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re not qualified to speak about Jesus, this episode is exactly what you need.

Our guest in this episode, Julie Morvant, is all about finding ways to do the inner work even when you feel busy and overwhelmed. She believes in finding your purpose through life's challenges and in this episode, she’s sharing how she did that for herself.

I’m super excited to have Mary as my first guest on the podcast. I’ve followed her online for a long time, but this is the first time that I’m getting to sit down and chat with her. She’s my kind of person, and I know that you’re going to love her.

Mary Hyatt is a life and business mindset coach who specializes in helping high-achieving female entrepreneurs move from living a life of burnout to a life where they are connected to their emotions, their body, and their spirit. She helps bring her 1-on-1 and group coaching clients back to their enoughness, wholeness, and femininity.

Mary is the host of the Living Fully Alive podcast where she dives deeper into mindset and helps her listeners learn to embody a life fully lived. Mary brings a level of consciousness and soul-focused inner work to everything she does.

If you feel out of touch with who you really are, this episode will set you on the right track. Don’t miss it!

56: The #1 Reason for Conflict in Marriage with an Entrepreneur
16:21

What do you think is the number one reason for conflict in a marriage with an entrepreneur?

I’ll give you a hint: it’s not finances or communication. Those are some big ones too, but they aren’t the reason we are talking about today.

You’ve probably noticed from listening to the podcast that there is a lot of crossover between marriage and business, and you’ll see that pattern emerge again in this episode.

There are characteristics that entrepreneurs have which make them successful in business, but those same characteristics can also be the very thing that can bring down their marriages if they're not careful.

If you want help managing conflict in your marriage with an entrepreneur, be sure to tune in!

In this episode, I am sharing what I have learned about balancing these two things and making them both awesome.

If you feel like you’re never going to find a balance between business and marriage, this episode will be really helpful.

Ending 2020 with Intention
20:31

This year, life has been absolutely crazy and has caused many of us to struggle. When this happens, it gets really easy just to let things slide and put intentional living on the back burner.

I want to encourage you not to do this. Take some time before the end of 2020 to evaluate how you are doing in the most critical areas of your life. What areas do you want to improve on next year? You may be saying that you’ll just wait until the pandemic is over before you focus on that goal, but don’t do that!

There will never be the perfect time to work on the things that matter to you. Now is the time to get started and make progress a little bit at a time.

I hope you feel encouraged to put some intentional thought into your life going into 2021. If you would like help, go to www.marriagesparks.com and get signed up for my community to support each other with our goals next year.

Tips to Safeguard Your Marriage From Perfectionism
17:51

Perfectionism can be a complete relationship killer.  And unfortunately, it is also very common. I counsel many couples in my practice that deal with a pattern of perfectionism in their relationship and as much as I hate to admit, I’ve also dealt with it in my own marriage.

So, how do we safeguard our most important relationships from the trap of perfectionism?

In this episode, we discuss perfectionism and the best tips for how to keep it from hurting your relationships.

I hope that the tips I share will help you the next time you are facing perfectionism. Take the time to ask yourself what is underneath the frustration you are feeling so you can show up in a more loving way - for yourself and for others.

The Power of Change, Forgiveness and Rebuilding Trust with Jena Flores
44:42

How do you forgive, let go and rebuild trust after your spouse's affair? What can you do if your marriage has become like roommates stuck together? How do you achieve calm when your life is in chaos?

These are tough questions that need straight answers.

For today's episode, I have a special guest from the Spark Re-ignite Course, Jena Flores.  This is my chance to get to know her a little bit more. We'll dive deep into how her marriage has evolved since she started the course four months ago.

Jena jumped in the course by herself wanting to initiate change in her marriage. She talks about her shift from feeling hopeless and lost to knowing that she's not alone. She also shares with us the changes she personally had to make in order to communicate better and more calmly. She is blown away at how the changes are affecting her husband and her marriage and I couldn’t be happier!

We also discuss her husband's past infidelity and I reveal one factor that makes forgiveness and letting go SOOO difficult. This episode is raw and real and you aren’t going to want to miss the breakthroughs we have at the end of our conversation.

Finding A New Norm: Making the Most of Your Marriage and Family Life In Quarantine
30:42

How are things going with your marriage and family since you’ve been in quarantine?  Have you gotten into a good flow or do things still feel chaotic? I wanted to bring Jon back on the podcast for this special episode and I know many of you will be excited because you have been asking for him!

The good news is that he is back and we are chatting about how we are learning to co-exist with four pets and three kids, all while working from home TOGETHER.

Today we are in uncharted territory.  This is a time that most of us have never experienced.  In 1918, people had to deal with the Spanish Flu, but that was a time when technology didn't exist.  People weren’t constantly surrounded by the negativity and stress that can come from being constantly “on”.  As much as you can try, it’s hard to avoid the news, text messages, emails and social media posts. It’s coming from everywhere right now!

Today’s episode will be a real, raw, and unscripted episode where we are sharing our own experiences, mistakes and talking about what works and what doesn't.  We will be sharing tips and tricks on finding a new norm and how to create structure for every member of your family.

Are you feeling connected in your marriage? Or are you feeling disconnected?  Some days you may think things are going great and other times not at all.

I see couples come into my private practice all the time who are feeling disconnected.  One of the spouses feels like they are constantly the one who is trying to make things better, while the other might be withdrawing from the relationship.

This can be a dangerous cycle.  In today’s episode, we are going to break this cycle down and figure out how you fix it when it happens…. And better yet, how you can prevent it in the first place.

9 Transformations You Want (and Need) to Have in Your Marriage
17:44

Today on the podcast I will be talking about the nine transformations you want (and need!) to have in your marriage.  Some of these things might be going well for you and your spouse, while some of the others might need some serious work.  I have discussed these transformations with hundreds of couples in my private practice as well as close friends.

Make sure to tune in and stay until the end because I have a treat for all of you who are ready to light your marriage on fire in 2020!

9 Transformations:

  1. You want to calm down anger in your marriage
  2. You want to reconnect with their spouse
  3. You want to have a voice that’s heard
  4. You want your spouse to understand where you are coming from, even if they don’t agree
  5. You want to create a lasting relationship free from worrying about disconnect
  6. You want emotional and physical intimacy that stands the test of time
  7. You want to feel like a priority to your spouse
  8. You want to look forward to coming home
  9. You want to reconnect with your BFF (your spouse!)

These are the 9 transformations people want in their marriage. Are you wondering how you can go about making these changes? The first thing you have to do is to start looking at YOU and your impact on things.

If you go straight into a discussion trying to correct any of these things and coming across as attacking, you are going to have a hard time figuring it out. I encourage you to start using the word “I” instead of ‘you”.  Instead of saying “you need to do the laundry” try saying “I would love it if you would take the kids out of the house for a few hours so I can do the laundry”. Doesn’t that statement sound much less aggressive and attacking towards your spouse?

After you listen to the episode, I want you to email me directly at hello@amywine.com and tell me which of the 9 transformations you relate with.  Which ones would you love for me to cover on an upcoming podcast episode?

After you email me, be sure to head over to www.amywine.com and sign up for my FREE beta course called SPARK.  This course will help you reignite your marriage like you just said I do.  Who doesn’t want that?! It's going to hit on every one of these transformations and will tell you exactly how you can change it.

SPARK will be full of actionable, detailed information that you can take home to reignite your marriage.  As a bonus, I will be going live every week for 3 weeks in our group to answer all of your questions so get them ready!

Make sure to sign up at https://amywine.com/sparkmarriagecourse

I will see you all here next week!

XO,

Amy

The Questions You Should Be Asking Yourself to Show Up as the Best You in Your Marriage
20:01

Are you showing up as the best you in your marriage?  Somedays you might say yes, and others you might be crawling under a table and hiding because your answer is a big fat, NO!

I know so many of you are hearing “new year, new you”.  I know this is supposed to be positive, but honestly, I hate it.  Why can’t it be “new day, new you”? Why do we have to think that you can only change when it’s a new year?  I want to make a change any day I want!

We are constantly in a state of change and people that don’t like change, don’t like to think of it that way. We should always be moving forward and not staying stuck or moving backward.

I am so passionate about being the healthiest and best you so you can have the best marriage possible.

Today I want you to sit down, review the questions in this episode, and look at YOU.  Grab a pen and paper and think about the questions and how they relate to your life. This is going to go deep so prepare yourself!

Questions to Ask Yourself:

  • What have you done in your life that you are proud of?
  • How have those successes shaped your life?
  • Are you feeling proud of yourself? How does this play a role in your life?
  • How did your parents show their love for you?
  • What is it that you want your partner to understand about you?
  • What difficult things have you experienced in your life?
  • Has your own trama had lasting effects on you?
  • What are you doing to protect yourself from these traumas?
  • How do these things affect your marriage today?
  • How did your family express happiness? Fear? Sadness? Anger?
  • What is your philosophy on expressing feelings?  Is it easy or hard for you?
  • How do you want people to remember you at your death?
  • What is the mission statement for your life?  What is your purpose?
  • Who do you want to become?
  • What do you want your life to be like in 5 years?  Write your story.

I hope you sit down and take time to REALLY go through this exercise.  Bonus points if you can do it with your spouse. These questions make you dig deep but the couples who have done this have had phenomenal success.

After you do this exercise I would love to hear from you.  You can reach out to me directly at hello@amywine.com.   You can also go to www.amywine.com and find out how you can work with me one on one.

If you go to www.amywine.com you can also jump on the waitlist for my newest course that will be launching soon:  SPARK. This course will walk you through transitioning from married roommates to a marriage on fire.

If you are ready to ignite the passion in your marriage again you can download my FREE online marriage mini-course → 5 Keys to a Marriage on Fire

How We Are Being Intentional In The New Year
30:51

On today's episode of the Marriage on Fire podcast…

We hope you had a good Christmas!

The New Year will be here soon, and you will hear a lot about New Year's resolutions. But completing a goal or resolution isn't something that just happens. It takes intention every day to make real progress!

It's so important to have a plan. Nothing that isn't planned gets done.

We are going to go in-depth about why we need to be intentional with our time and what system we use to check in weekly.

On Today's Episode:

  • Christmas recap and expectations that come along with the season.
  • Why we need to be intentional with our time.
  • What happens when we do not plan.
  • Brendon Burchard's High-Performance Planner weekly review check-in.
  • We rate the key areas in our lives and touch on how we can improve on them.

If you can change what you're doing in your marriage, you can change everything. It's not about what your spouse does or doesn't do. It's about what you do, or don't do.

How are you going to be intentional in the new year?

Our Biggest Fight Ever & How We Recovered From It

On today's episode we discuss:

Are You and Your Spouse Living as Married Roommates?
44:34

Today’s episode may hit close to home for many of you.  Jon and I lived like roommates for YEARS in our marriage.  We simply co-existed, side by side, just going through the motions of daily life.

Many of you have found yourselves feeling like roommates in your marriage.  You may feel like you have lost the “spark” you had when you were dating or in the early years.

How do you move past this?  What are some things you can do to open up communication in your marriage?  How can you move past going through the motions and avoid living with resentment towards your spouse?

One of the most important things you must do is to find yourself and figure out what brings you joy….then you must be open and honest with your partner.  Without open communication, you will have a hard time avoiding it.

I hope you guys listen in this week. I am excited to share with you a resource I created to help bring a spark back to your marriage!

On Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • How couples get into a married roommate situation in the first place
  • Why everyone has gone through or will go through a married roommate situation at some point in their relationship
  • The fact that I like constant companionship and Jon doesn’t and how this affected our marriage in the beginning
  • The importance of open communication in marriage
  • Being able to speak up and tell your partner what is important to you and not letting it sit in silence which in turn builds resentment
  • Why not knowing who you are or what brings you joy makes it easy to fall into a roommate situation
  • Compromise in your marriage
  • How you can learn to value your partner’s interests
  • One of the biggest fights in our marriage
  • The constant power struggle couples face
  • Why hearing and agreeing are two different things
  • Actions you can go through to avoid becoming a married roommate
  • Why values are so important in a relationship and how they can change over time
  • The importance of exploring your core values

I hope you really found today’s episode helpful.  I encourage you to explore your core values and share them with your partner.  It’s easy to put blame on your partner, but at the end of the day, you are the only person who can control your problems.  I want you to shift your focus from “me versus my partner” to “us as a team”.

You must compromise and accept influence and learn yourself.  This is when you can start taking responsibility and get away from the married roommate situation.

If you connect with any of today’s episode I encourage you to go to amywine.com and get on the waitlist for Married Roommates.  This is a super actionable course that will help you avoid living as married roommates and will help you get the light back in your marriage.  Jump on the waitlist here → www.amywine.com/married-roommates.

How to Prevent Conflict and Navigate the Holidays as a Couple
34:09

Where is your family heading for the holidays?  Your family’s house? To your husband’s side? Maybe you are hosting everyone at your house this year.  Whatever your plans are, I hope they were discussed and negotiated earlier than a few days before the holiday hit!  Last-minute plans usually end up in a fight. At least they did for us.

I wish I could say Jon and I always had our family holiday plans figured out months in advance.  I also wish I could say that we always agreed on them, but that would be a big fat lie. For many years of our marriage, things around the holidays caused a lot of stress and chaos in our families and between us as a couple.

This episode is dedicated to walking you through navigating the holidays and preventing conflict…. as much as possible anyways :)

On Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • The delicate balancing act of trying to please everyone during the holidays
  • How to avoid setting up false expectations
  • Setting expectations and boundaries  with your family

Programming Your Mind for a Happy Marriage
29:28

Are you doing things on a daily basis that are making you happy?  In today’s episode, I will be talking about ways you can program your mind for a happy marriage.  We all know when we have those bad days and something negative happens and then it just seems to spiral from there.  One small negative builds upon another, and another, and before you know it, you implode.

Have you ever thought about what makes you happy?  Some people might say it would be a shiny new sports car or a new house.  Maybe you think a new pair of shoes would do it. There are so many of us that think we will be happier when something new or different happens, but most of the time that never comes.  You get the new car or the new house and you are still unhappy. It’s crucial to strive to be happier, right now, right where you are because it will save you a whole lot of hurt if not.

We get lost worrying about the future. I encourage you to stop wasting your days and your time and live happy now.  I am excited to dive into today’s episode! I hope you are too.

In Today’s Episode I Discuss:

  • The story of my depression years ago
  • Why my counselor told me to “just sit and be still” and I laughed at him!
  • The time when I thought I broke my own therapist
  • The journey of trying to silence my mind- it wasn’t easy!
  • The time I broke down and cried to myself for 6 straight weeks
  • Why you are not responsible for someone else’s happiness
  • Rediscovering myself
  • The importance of taking responsibility for yourself
  • Why people have a hard time pulling out of the negative cycle
  • What steps you can follow to become a happier person
  • The damaging effects of self-pity in a marriage
  • Quitting the blame game
  • The truth about resentment and how it affects a marriage

That wraps up today’s episode.  The number one thing to remember is to have a habit of happiness in your marriage. To do this, you have to work on your own happiness and not blame anyone else.  You can’t have self-pity and resentment. Remember that happiness for yourself is within you.

I encourage you to ask yourself- what can I do right now to change my attitude and get the negative self talk out?  Head over to Instagram and tag me @theamywine and tell me what your biggest obstacle is. Share with me how you plan to incorporate more happiness into your life and marriage.  Let me help you walk through some of your struggles.

Demon Dialogues and How They Are Affecting Your Marriage
34:01

So I know many of you are going to be totally bummed, but I will be recording another solo episode today. Jon is actually in the next room working on a major presentation for work, but he will be back soon, so don’t fret!

Today on the show I will be covering demon dialogues and how they come into play with each partner. We will be talking about the bad guy in the relationship and the protest.

Are you ready for this? I think many of you are going to really resonate with the example I go over of a husband and wife named Evelyn and Chris. Chris and Evelyn go through the attack withdrawal cycle.  At one point they did not know if they could even save their relationship. I have been at this point before. Scary!

Before we wrap up the episode, you’ll be fully equipped to smell an attack withdrawal cycle coming and you’ll know how to attack it before it attacks your marriage.

On Today’s Episode I Discuss:

  • A pattern on how to identify the bad guy in a relationship
  • Why the silent partner that refuses to engage is also aggressive
  • The attack withdrawal pattern and how to spot it
  • How to stop the attack withdrawal cycle
  • Steps for getting out of the attack withdrawal cycle

Never shy away from asking for help. If you try out the steps shared in the episode and you fail, seek help. There are so many people who allow this cycle to lead to divorce.  Don’t let that be you.

Do you have any questions?  What can I help you with? Do you think you and your spouse or partner deal with this cycle?  DM me on Instagram @theamywine and let me know what you thought about this episode. I would love to connect!

Quick Tips for Putting Intimacy Back in your Marriage Using the CLEAVE Acronym
12:30

Today’s episode I will be doing something a little different.  This will be short and sweet, but value-packed, so I hope you tune in.  Today’s episode was inspired by a book written by Everett Worthington called Hope Focused Marriage.  I have used these suggestions many times in my counseling sessions with married couples so I hope you enjoy!

On Today’s Episode I Discuss:

  • How to stimulate your closeness
  • The CLEAVE Acronym, where it came from and how it can be used
  • C- Change actions to positive.  What is something that is negative that you could change to positive?
  • L- Loving romance- Try to show romance again.  What did you do at the beginning of your relationship?
  • E- Employ a calendar- Rearrange your calendar and add in positive events that bring back time together.
  • A- Adjust intimacy elsewhere- Husbands and wives have different levels of intimacy. Figure out what level you need.
  • V- Value your partner- Valuing love builds intimacy.  When we feel valued, we feel closer to the one who loves us.
  • E- Enjoy yourself sexually- learn to communicate better in the bedroom

On today’s episode of the Marriage on Fire podcast I have a surprise guest on the show! My own daughter Ali.  I am excited to have her on the show and have to admit, it’s a little scary having her on here because I will be asking her some questions that I have never asked her before.  Jon and I had some dark times in our marriage and for a couple of years, all we did was fight. Luckily, we came out on the other side, so I am excited to have my daughter on the show to chat with all of you!

On Today’s Episode We Chat About:

  • Ali’s first year of college and missing her family
  • How Jon and I communicated in the beginning

  • How our relationship was affected when I had to reset boundaries
  • How I worried about the mistakes I made and how they would affect my kids

  • How Jon and I thought we were hiding our fights, yet Ali says this was not the case
  • How Ali used staying away from the house as an avoidance measure
  • The importance of communication in relationships, even in the beginning
  • The only way to survive our marriage was to reset it
  • How I push back on boundaries now and how different it is from the past
  • How we could have helped our kids during the rough years
  • What we could have done differently with our kids when the fighting was going on
  • What questions I could have asked to get the kids to open up more when they were younger
  • What Ali felt she needed more from me when growing up
  • What Ali felt she needed more from Jon when growing up

Alright guys, that wraps up another episode! I hope you enjoyed this conversation with Ali.  I loved having her on the show today. I want you to make sure to tune in and listen to the podcast.  You will see how fighting in your marriage can affect your kids (even long after). Make sure you check in with your kids and be there for them.  So many kids come into my office and admit that they wish their parents would just divorce because of all of the fighting. I hope you work hard on your marriage!  Jon and I made it through world war 3, so I know you can change things! I have seen it in my office hundreds of times.

Make sure to reach out and let me know what you thought of the episode.  These types of episodes are so vulnerable for me, but I know that a lot of people don’t have access to counseling, so I started this podcast as a way to bring help and encouragement to you for free…. Any time of the day.

Thanks so much for listening and make sure to subscribe so you don’t miss next week’s episode.
