Description

Nostalgia is a funny thing. Six friends discussing it is even funnier.

Join us as we reflect on some of the best and worst movies from last century and rewatch them On Second Watch. Did they get better with age? Worse? Only one way to find out...

Join Tim, Chris, Dana, Kari, Nikki, and Dan as we plunge head first into the movies we grew up on and discuss our nostalgia for them. Then, we'll watch the movie together, jump back on the mics, and record our observations. We'll provide both our Nostalgia Score and Rewatch Score to see if the movie aged well, or if it should stay in last century.

We have fun with our show by playing a game of Plot Summary Mad Libs, where we take the plot of the movie make it awkward and mostly dirty with new nouns, adjectives, and verbs. We also have many bonus episodes, such as special interviews with those in the entertainment industry, and our popular "How Would Sean Bean Have Died?" where we cast and kill our favorite Yorkshireman in the movies he was not cast.

Stay up to date on all our episodes, giveaways, and fun at www.oswpodcast.com

When the Screaming Starts (2021)

Now available across North America and the UK, take a stab at 2021's British black comedy horror mockumentary, When the Screaming Starts.

Inspired by the modern day obsession with serial killers and true-crime documentaries, WHEN THE SCREAMING STARTS turns this popular sub-genre on its head, whilst questioning the contemporary fascination with serial slaughter. This fresh, new mockumentary examines the dark subject matter through a comedic lens, resulting in a pitch-black horror-comedy that will have you "laughing and wincing in equal measure"

Directed by Conor Boru, who co-wrote the screenplay with Ed Hartland, who are both producers of this film alongside Jared Rogers and Dom Lenoir, Cinematographer Adrian Musto, Editor Alan Rae, Sound by Paul Caton, and Composer Michael Palmer. Starring Ed Hartland, Jared Rogers, Kaitlin Reynell, Octavia Gilmore, Yasen Atour, Kavé Niku, Ronja Haugholt, Vår Haugholt. Now back to the On Second Watch crew

Special thanks to Jared and the whole WTSS crew for letting us preview this film! Go check it out today

Hook (1991)
3881

It's time to get Bangerang and rewatch 1991's American adventure film, Hook

Based on the novel Peter and Wendy by J. M. Barrie. Screenplay by Jim V Hart, and Directed by the great Steven Spielberg. Starring a powerhouse cast of the great Robin Williams as Peter Pan, Dustin Hoffman as Captain Hook, Julia Roberts as Tinker Bell, Super Mario himself Bob Hoskins, Maggie Smith as Granny Wendy, and like 100 cameos

With a budget of $70mil, it made $300mil in the box office. Currently an 6.8 on IMDb

This movie was not chosen by a spin the wheel, rather by a special request from a huge movie buff and fan of the show, Nicole Marie Loftus. She reached out to me in October of last year with a huge list of movies she'd love for us to review, but the one that really hit me right in the nostalgia was Hook. So after almost a year, Nicole, this one is for you

IMDb's Top 50 Movies

IMDb has always been a critical resource to learn about films, cast and crew, and learn about trivia and read reviews. I've always loved their top 100 list to see what the people, not the critics, choose as the best movies of all time,

Tim picked the category "IMDb's Top 50 Movies", we choose our picks, and fate decides our nostalgia review. Which movie's did we pick and which one are we reviewing next? Listen and find out...

The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)
2371

Nothing says horror movie like a good old fashioned legal drama! *Dun Dun* Join us as we review 2005's American supernatural horror legal drama film, The Exorcism of Emily Rose. This film won our "Spin the Wheel" event for Based on a True Story, in which this film barely counts as a true story...

We recorded this one LIVE and in person for the first time in 2 years, and has the same sound quality as we did 2 years ago due to technical difficulties. Regardless, we have some fun with Plot Summary MadLibs, where one of is plays the priest.

The screenplay was written by director Scott Derrickson and Paul Harris Boardman. Starring Laura Linney as Erin Bruner, Tom Wilkinson as Father Richard Moore, Jennifer Carpenter as Emily Rose.

With a budget of $19mil, it made $145mil in the box office. Currently an 6.7 on IMDb.

We each thought long and hard about our pick that fit that category and shared why we made our pick. Then, we let fate take over as they were all randomly added to our randomizer app, Kari chanted "Spin The Wheel", and our fate was sealed. Which movie's did we pick and which one are we reviewing next? Listen and find out...

Batman and Robin (1997) - "Let's kick some ice!"

This 2 hour long commercial has more one-liners and puns than we could even count. We knew what we were getting ourselves into with 1997's American superhero film, "Batman and Robin". We joked about this film since before we started our podcast and finally take the polar plunge into the icy water. Oh god, I'm doing it now.

5468
April Fools! On Second Watch has been taken over by Doug and Jamie from the podcast Good Times, Great Movies. Enjoy their hilarious take on this 1987 film featuring arm wrestling, truckin', and fatherhood. This movie is so '80s...

On this special Slysgiving episode of the podcast, Doug confuses lawyers for judges and secretaries for lawyers and wonders if the dying mother is the actual villain of this movie. Meanwhile, Jamie wishes for a Stallone/Loggia Christmas card and is wildly confused by commercials on streaming services. Turn your hat around backwards, challenge a random child to an arm wrestling match and join us as we celebrate our fifth Slysgiving by having an absolute blast watching Over the Top!

About Good Times, Great Movies
Every other Friday, Doug McCambridge and Jamie Lorello discuss a film from the 1980s. Some are films we haven't seen since we were kids and offer a fresh perspective. Others are films we've never seen before but probably should have. Do they hold up? Are they classics? Or would these films just be better off having been lost to time?

Super Mario Bros. (1993) - "Improbable, Unlikely, but never impossible"
5745
The idea of taking one of the best video games and video game characters from 16-bit to the big screen sounds like an easy way to make a lot of money. Obtain an incredible intellectual property with full creative control, assemble an incredible cast, toss in $48mil, what could go wrong? Let us count the ways...

I do promise that you will laugh more listening to this episode than you would have watching 1993's adventure comedy film Super Mario Bros. Our Plot Summary Mad Libs is straight up offensive and I almost feel like I owe Kari and apology. Almost.

Most importantly though, watching this film was worth it because we, with the help of all of YOU, raised over $900 for the children at CS Mott Children's Hospital! I cannot wait to bring all these great gifts to the kids there and I will be documenting the fun on our Ko-fi page and on Twitter

The Fifth Element (1997) - "Negative, I am a meat popsicle"
5587
When rewatching a sci-fi movie from decades ago, it's often hilarious how the future and technology is assumed to evolve. 1997's "The Fifth Element" seems to intentionally lean into that hard, as the technology appears to have been developed by someone from the early 80's interpretation of what the future might be. Join us as we take a trip to planet Fhloston to save the universe and admire everything Ruby Rhod.

This is the first review we've done in our new format, which sees a return of our Nostalgia and Rewatch reviews in the same episode. Let us know what you think!

The Lost Episode: Home Alone (1993)
2646
One year ago, four friends sat down to record their very first podcast episode. It did not go well... That episode was hidden away for only the most daring. Now, we present to you, our nostalgia review of 1990's American Christmas family comedy film, "Home Alone". Listen at your own risk...

Tim, Chris, Dana, and Spaz sat around a flimsy card table with a single Blue Yeti microphone and hit record. We learned a lot this night. Most importantly, Spaz should not have certain food within 2 hours of recording a podcast. Since this was all recorded on a single channel, there was no way for me to clean up this mess.

The Fog (1980) - Part 1, Nostalgia Review + Halloween Fun!
4711
Happy October! We are pumped for Halloween and will be celebrating all month long. While this episode is focused on our next nostalgia film, we spend a ton of time talking about our nostalgia for what makes Halloween awesome. That said, it’s finally time that we give in to Chris and watch one of his favorite horror movies, 1980's American supernatural horror thriller film, "The Fog".

Tim and Dana have never seen this movie, as they rarely ever watch horror movies, but Dana doesn’t have a good experience with John Carpenter since Big Trouble in Little China.

We talk everything Halloween in this episode: movies, food, baking shows, Hangry Dana, Kari the Leper, Chris’ tinder profile, Limp Bizkit… You know, all things horror…

Join us in our journey of Halloween goodness as we explore this ghost story together.

Taken (2008) - Part 1, Nostalgia Review
3097
Our particular set of skills might not be that great, but we can all agree that Bryan Mills’ skills are incredible as we explore our nostalgia for 2008’s English-language French action-thriller film, Taken.

This is a special episode as requested by Mike, who answered the call and donated to Dana’s fundraising campaign supporting the non-profit Angioma Alliance, Because Brains Shouldn’t Bleed!

In this episode, Tim, Chris, Dana, and Kari explore their nostalgia and what they recall as their favorite moments. Spaz missed this episode because it was his birthday weekend and he was taken… by alcohol and steak. We finally find movies that Chris hasn’t seen before and Kari calls us out on our ratings. Tim and Dana are both looking forward to seeing this movie again for the first time as parents and how that may change their connection to this movie. Also, screw U2…

3714
This is part 2 of our adventure exploring 1989's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Be sure to listen to part 1 first, as we explore our nostalgia and memories of this film before rewatching it.

Follow me I know the way to a great American action adventure film. X always marks the spot in 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, brought to us by the legendary Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and John Williams. Harrison Ford and Sean Connery are the only Father/Son duo we need to take on the Nazis.

I regret to inform everyone that Dana had only seen the Crystal Skull prior to this movie… We needed to set things right, so our good friend Kari joins us as we break this nostalgic trip down.

This was Tim’s favorite movie of all-time as a kid, and Chris and Spaz both have a ton of nostalgia for it. Girl, Interrupted (1999) - "Was I ever crazy? Maybe. Or maybe life is."
5051
We interrupt to talk to you about James Mangold’s 1999 American psychological drama, “Girl, Interrupted”. Starring Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie, Brittany Murphy, Whoopi Goldberg, Elisabeth Moss, Angela Bettis, and Jared Leto.

This is a film that everyone EXCEPT Spaz has seen and his experience watching this movie was surprising to say the least. This film left an impact on Tim, Chris, and Dana when they saw it in the early 2000’s, but the big question is will it leave a similar impact today?

Tim pulled off a miracle and managed to have a Q&A with the one and only James Mangold to discuss how this movie came to be, how James approached the screenplay, and his favorite memories. To read the entire Q&A, head to OSWpodcast.com

We strongly encourage everyone to follow this movement on social media as they provide great insights and hope through wonderful posts.

Big Trouble in Little China (1986) - "It's All In The Reflexes"
6147
This is On Second Watch, and we’re talkin' to whoever's listenin' out there. Hop aboard the Pork Chop Express as we take a wild ride with John Carpenter’s 1986 cult classic, “Big Trouble in Little China”. Staring Kurt Russell, Kim Cattrall, James Hong, and the one and only Gerald Okamura, who joins us for a great interview about his experience with this film.

Surprising no one, Dana has never seen this movie, and it was a whirlwind of emotions. Tim and Chris lost respect for one another, and Spaz was too busy getting push notifications on his phone. Does this cult classic still reign as one of the kings of all cult classics? Just do what ol’ Jack Burton would do and listen to On Second Watch.

Oh my god, we’re totally buggin’ for Amy Heckerling’s “Clueless”. This nostalgia trip is as sweet as Cher’s loqued out Jeep. Staring Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, Paul Rudd, Donald Faison, the late Brittany Murphy, and a ton more you forgot were in this movie.

This episode comes to us as a Listener Request by our old friend Nikki, who joins us in the second half of the recording to dive into the 90's with us. Tim, Chris, and Dana explore what defined them in the 90's… No Fear shirts, skater’s cuts, Ace of Base… Even the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Coming Out of Their Shells Tour?

This movie opened the flood gates for 90's nostalgia and we dove right in. Does this coming-of-age teen comedy hold up 25 years after the fact or is it a Monet? Find out on this episode of On Second Watch

Inception (2010) - "You Mustn't Be Afraid to Dream a Little Bigger, Darling"
4444
If you’re waiting for a train, this is it. Join us as we fanboy over Christopher Nolan and his masterpiece “INCEPTION”. This film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Dileep Rao, Cillian Murphy, Tom Berenger, and Michael Caine.

Dana has seen this one (GASP) and provides a lot of analysis. Spaz was pre-gaming before the recording and was in some sort of half-remembered dream. Chris regrets everything and Tim has some beef with the so-called “Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences”.

Let Christopher Nolan and Hans Zimmer transport you into a dream within a dream while we try to break it all down, including what the ending really means to us.

Is this movie still one of the best of all time? Did Hans Zimmer melt our brains? Did Spaz make really inappropriate comments that had to be edited out? (spoiler alert: yes)

Dream bigger darlings and let’s explore another episode of On Second Watch.

Jaws (1975) - "You're Gonna Need a Bigger Boat"
3380
Hop aboard the Orca and join the hunt for the original summer blockbuster, "Jaws". This thriller from 1975 stars Richard Dreyfuss, Roy Scheider, and Robert Shaw. Dive into how director Steven Spielberg and composer John Williams created this masterpiece against all odds.

Dana had never seen this movie before (shocking!) and made the most accurate plot prediction ever. Spaz was distracted by his own feeding frenzy while Chris and Tim navigate this adventure. When you combine Spielberg and Williams, you’re almost guaranteed to have a great experience.

Does this movie still hold up as one of the best summer movies of all time? Did a series of failures make this movie better? Is Tim obsessed with John Williams? How many different types of food does Spaz mention in a single recording? Grab your fishing pole and head for the pier for this episode of On Second Watch.

Bad Boys (1995) - "Tropical Fruit Bubblicious and Some Skittles"
2123
Join us as we explore Michael Bay's explosive directorial debut, "Bad Boys". This action comedy from 1995 stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.

Tim and Dana had never seen this movie before so they made their best effort to guess what the plot was based on what they know of Michael Bay. Safe bet: Explosions and racial stereotypes. Chris and Spaz provide their nostalgic memory of the film. Spoiler alert: one of their memories were on point, while the other was wrong about 90% of the plot.

Does the movie warrant multiple sequels? Does Martin Lawrence's back hurt after carrying this movie? How many sub plots can one movie have? What was the point of the main sub plot? What's with the detectives dressing as garbage men again? Grab some Skittles and Tropical Fruit Bubblicious and hear our thoughts on these points and more on our first episode of On Second Watch.
