'In the Cut' 20th Anniversary Special with Jane Campion
00:37:36

Oscar-winning filmmaker Jane Campion joins The Letterboxd Show for a very special episode, marking the 20th anniversary of one of Gemma Gracewood’s Four Favorites: In the Cut (2003). Campion’s erotic thriller stars height-of-her-fame box office darling Meg Ryan and pre-Hulk, pre-13 Going on 30 Mark Ruffalo as a literary professor and a detective, respectively, who dive headlong into a red-hot sexual romance, while a serial killer is on the loose in New York City.

In the Cut received an infamous CinemaScore ‘F’ grade on release, with many major critics panning the film. But the Letterboxd average rating has only grown over the years as the misunderstood noir masterpiece finds its audience at last. Now, with a new uncut director’s cut Blu-ray on the market, Gemma reads Campion some thirsty Letterboxd reviews and gets the goods from Jane about her favorite sex scenes, intimacy coordination, earning trust with actors, what it really means to win an Oscar, and why the structures of filmmaking need to change.

The songs in this episode are from the soundtrack for In the Cut: Pink Martini’s cover of Que Sera Sera, and Betty Everett’s You’re No Good.

Four Favorites with David Ehrlich: Letterboxd popularity, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and the meaning of life
01:01:02

You don’t get to over 125,000 Letterboxd followers without making a few enemies… unless you’re David Ehrlich! IndieWire’s chief film critic joins Slim and Mitchell to discuss mortality across existential masterpieces and Apatow-produced rom-coms. As we make our way through his four favorite films (Ikiru, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, Titanic) we hit a range of topics including: the pressure of David’s yearly video countdowns, how the canon has changed in “the age of Letterboxd”, stealing your mom’s credit card to buy movies, finding meaning in small and invisible acts, Forgetting Sarah Marshall’s controversial marketing campaign and how it’s more quotable than Casablanca, Paul Schrader’s hot dog stains, Mishima as “the most Schrader” movie, David’s alleged personal connection to Titanic and the meditative quality of the DVD menu. PLUS: Find out which of David’s children is his favorite!

‘Down with Love’ 20th Anniversary Special with Peyton Reed
00:33:14

In this very special episode of The Letterboxd Show, we ditch the watchlists and awards shows to talk to filmmaker Peyton Reed about directing one of Mia Lee Vicino’s Four Favorites: Down with Love (2003). That’s right; it’s the 20th anniversary of this Renée Zellweger and Ewan McGregor-starring ode to the Doris Day-Rock Hudson sex comedies of yore, such as Pillow Talk (1959) and Lover Come Back (1961).

Mia and Peyton chatted about the difference between Barbie and Barbara Novak shades of pink, which classic romances inspired screenwriters Eve Ahlert and Dennis Drake, the origin of that grand finale musical number and the belated cultural embrace of this misunderstood feminist masterpiece. Even if you haven’t seen it, if we did our jobs right, maybe you’ll end up adding it to your own watchlist. Cheers, here’s to twenty years of Down with Love!

Best in Show: Indie Spirit Awards, The Quiet Girl, Paul Mescal, and Movie Spoofs
01:19:54

Hello, Best in Show listener Paul Mescal! It smells like Indie Spirit (and bourbon) in here! Weekend Watchlist’s Slim joins Mia, Gemma, and Brian for an in-person debrief of all things Film Independent Spirit Awards. We were on the blue carpet, in the press room and inside the big tent on Santa Monica beach for all the wins. Slim reveals a fear of rollerbladers and spin classes on the sand, Mia meets her biggest fan (producer of the Filipino comedy Leonor Will Never Die), and everyone (and we mean everyone) gushes about Aftersun’s lead.

Gemma chats with Colm Bairéad, the writer-director of her much-loved The Quiet Girl, while Mia zooms with the movie’s star, Catherine Clinch as we look at the Best International Feature Oscar category (where The Quiet Girl has made history as the first in the Irish language to be nominated). And after Slim and Mia had their first glimpse of a big award show, we spend the afterparty talking about our favorite movie scenes at award ceremonies, which takes a surprising turn into spoof flicks. All, this plus the last of the craft guild winners, including a last-second, history-making win from the American Society of Cinematographers.

We recorded this episode as the news of George Floyd’s death by police brutality was emerging, and held it back in order to amplify Black voices and stories. Racism has no place on Letterboxd. Here are some ideas for activism; here are more; and more. We are donating all proceeds from screenings of Josephine Decker’s Shirley via our virtual screening link (available to US members only) to BIPOC film non-profit Firelight Media. Black Lives Matter.
