Preparing Our Teens For Life | 86
30:39
On today's podcast, we are joined by Jen Dodrill. Jen has some wonderful insight on preparing teens for life. So many kids are entering college and the workforce without the necessary life skills to succeed. Leslie and Jen will talk about why we need to change that and what tools you can use to prepare your teen for an ever changing world. With all that is going on in the world, one of the life skills we need to teach our children is empathy and care for others. Voice of the Martyrs will give your family current situations about situations Christians all around the world find themselves in. You will learn how to pray specifically for them, and you will grow in faith as you read their stories in the free magazine that you will receive each month. Couple that with the beautiful "Foxes Book of Martyrs" and you will have some great tools to help prepare your children to stand in a increasingly hostile world. Go to VOM.org/ttd today to request your free magazine and book. These will be a blessing and encouragement to your family. Dyslexia and Igniting the Brain | 85
37:06
On today's podcast, we will be speaking with Dr. Rebecka Spencer about Homeschooling With Dyslexia and Igniting your child’s brain. We so appreciate Dr. Spencer’s insights, because as a highly degreed educator, she shares well-researched academic help. But when she found she couldn’t teach her child to read because of his learning difference, it all became personal, and she’s able to offer incredible insights about learning differences both as a mom and as an educator.  This is a podcast you can’t afford to miss! You can also find this podcast posted on our YouTube channel. Here, you can watch as Dr. Spencer displays and explains the tools she’s used to help her son overcome much as he’s learned to read over the past several years. I wanted to share a resource that has made a huge difference in my own family, and I know it will be transformational in yours as well. I have personally seen a focus on thanksgiving fundamentally transform people I love as they turn their eyes upward and start seeing things as God does. My husband, David has written a phenomenal resource that will walk you through 40 transformational days in the Psalms as you learn what Thanksgiving is and how it will impact your life and your relationships when you actively practice it day by day. I can’t encourage you strongly enough to pick up a copy and make the Transform Journal, Thanksgiving in the Psalms part of your devotional time. You can buy them as a single copy, but we’ve found that most people buy two to do as a couple or the family pack and use them for family devotions. God is doing GREAT things through this resource, and I can’t wait to hear how He’ll use it in your family as well. You can learn more at TransformJournals.com-- so go check it out today!Additional Resources:Dr. Rebecka Spencer has SO MANY resources for families! She has most recently been part of our Family Conference and Back2Homeschool. Can It Happen In Your Home? Bullying, Cyber Bullying, and Other Abuses | 80
36:44
When I first started talking to today’s guest, my initial thought was “surely, it doesn’t happen here…” although I knew in my heart that bullying, cyber bullying and other abuses are indeed happening within homeschool families all around the world. I learned so much from our conversation, and I know you will, too. Today, I’m joined by Candice Dugger of Bullied, Broken, Redeemed. She’s going to give us as parents a lot of critical information to prepare our children for the dangers they face and then to help them navigate their way out of it in a healthy manner if they do become victims of a bully or abuser of any sort. She will give us a lot of statistics and other helpful information to better equip us to deal with an issue that almost every young person will be confronted with at some point in their lives, so I encourage you to pay close attention to what she has to say today. There are still places around the world where the name of Jesus has never been heard. That’s why Operation Christmas Child is sending the gospel, through simple shoebox gifts, to the ends of the earth. The Greatest Journey follow up discipleship program is teaching millions of children to put their faith in Christ, and how to share that faith with others. As a result, entire communities are being transformed. National Collection week is November 15-22! We’re going to be talking about all of that today. Dr. Kathy is one of the most knowledgeable and insightful people I know.  She loves people-- and it shows! On her heart right now is helping children and adults to be resilient, and the insight she gave as we chatted in INCREDIBLE! You don’t want to miss a minute. Alex grew up in Rwanda and lived through the civil war in that land. These past couple of years have really underscored our need for people, hasn’t it? We are absolutely not called to go it alone in this world. We need our church family, and honestly, we need our homeschool family as well. None can understand and walk with us the way other homeschoolers can. You’re in for a real treat today as we talk about the value of community, but we also took a walk back in time to talk about the way homeschooling has changed over the last 25 years. You’ll find it helpful to see the benefits and challenges all the progress we’ve made has ushered in. 43:00
Kristen is the founder of Protect Young Minds Org and the author of Good Pictures Bad Pictures and Good Pictures Bad Pictures Jr.  Today, we’re going to be discussing the incredibly important topic of porn-proofing your kids. It’s truly stunning and deeply distressing to know how many children are confronted with images they don’t want to see every single day, and as parents we need to protect them but also to equip them to know what to do if they do encounter something they know they shouldn’t look at. Kristen’s resources give parents a Can Do plan to share with their kiddos, and I’m really excited to let you hear from her today. Additional Information: Kristen A. Jenson is the author of the Good Pictures Bad Pictures series of read-aloud books, powerful resources to help children reject pornography and sexual abuse.    You can find out more about Kristen Jenson on Facebook and her website Protect Young Minds. Help them get a proven action plan to use when they encounter pornography.  The 5-point CAN DO Plan™ teaches kids how to avoid the brain-warping images of pornography and minimize the troubling memories of accidental exposure that can lead them into a dark and destructive addiction. To stay safe in the digital age, kids must install an internal filter in their own brain. Good Pictures Bad Pictures shows them how. Special thanks to this week's sponsor, Alpha Omega Publications. Discipleship Tools For Your Family and Around The Globe | 33
31:44
Today, Leslie is joined by Hannah Bolvi of Operation Christmas Child to discuss the many discipleship resources available for your family as well as are being offered to children all around the world. You'll be excited to hear how your gift of a shoebox can be the key to open the door to a relationship with Jesus for a boy or girl who has never heard about Him before, and how those boys and girls are discipled in a way that you can use in your home as well! What a great time to start The Greatest Journey in your own home even as you're packing shoeboxes to reach boys and girls with the gospel. Additional Resources: Join Teach Them Diligently families all over the country as together we pack thousands of shoeboxes to deliver to children through Operation Christmas Child. Click here for more information.Or, if you prefer to pack a shoebox virtually, you can do so here. It's such a great hands-on discipleship exercise, though, we expect most families will want to pack them physically.  Did you know that: Internationally shoebox gifts are given to one child, at one time, in one lifetime. This means Operation Christmas Child is reaching new communities all of the time. The purpose of the shoebox is to further the Gospel by partnering with the local church worldwide Did you know that: Operation Christmas Child does not want to just send “stuff” into a country. Through partnering with the Local church, shoeboxes provide a key to open doors otherwise closed to the Gospel. Evangelism leads to discipleship as the children are led through the Greatest Journey discipleship curriculum. Did you know that: American children are actually among the most unreached with the gospel in the world? Operation Christmas Child has developed resources and apps with the thought of How do we not” gain the whole world and lose our soul” by losing the children of America while we reach the world at large.  Download the Greatest Journey App for your children and allow them to start enjoying the adventures that await them there today. Pick up copies of the Greatest Journey for your own family to start working through that discipleship resource together today.

I’d love to help you with that! Sign up for our free Praying for your Children email series by clicking here. Check out the first two episodes of our Homeschool Family Bites series. Four Big Mistakes Homeschoolers Make That Can Derail Their Mission There are so many new homeschoolers entering the ranks this year. How exciting to think about the impact all those moms and dads will have on their children with the extra time they’re about to have with them— A. MAZ.ING! As is often the case, though, newness comes with both excitement and a touch of fear (ok, let’s be honest, a whole lot of fear…) I wanted to share with you a few mistakes that new homeschoolers make that if you can avoid them, you’ll get off to a much better start! Mistake #1--Don’t recreate school at home. I know, I know— ever since you were a child, you’ve wanted to play school for real, right?? (At least, that was my approach when we started.) :) Finally, you get the chance to set up your classroom, make your rules, and manage everything and everyone as you teach the material like a pro. ;) The thing is, a home classroom and a corporate classroom don’t need to function the same way. When we make the mistake of trying to wedge in the structure that’s needed in a group setting, we lose much of the flexibility and joy that’s available in a home setting. Approach your school through brand new eyes— and especially through the lens of your mission as a Christian homeschooling parent. Your mission AND your newly found freedom should be reflected in the way you set up your homeschool. Mistake #2-- Don’t let guilt override your detours. For those of you who haven’t started up yet, you are probably thinking… what in the world is she talking about? So, let me explain. One of the greatest privileges of being a homeschool parent is the “detours” you get to take with your children. The conversations that truly go off the rails as you explore all kinds of things that really interest and excite your children. That’s all part of instilling a love of learning! But, if you don’t understand fully why you’re doing what you’re doing, the guilt of not doing it exactly as you experienced it in school will likely keep you back from taking those detours. Don’t ever let it!! The other great benefit of detours for a Christian homeschooler on mission is that those are the conversations that often give you the biggest insight into your child’s heart. Satan would LOVE to guilt you away from taking the time to have those discussions, so don’t ever let guilt override your detours! Mistake #3-- Don’t try to go it alone.  I say it all the time, but I can’t say it enough— you were not created to walk alone!! God created people to live in community with one another,

Focus on Your Calling Not The Catalyst | 21
34:03
The big secret to success in most things in life is to focus on your calling rather than on any catalyst God uses to get you there. All of us as parents have one primary calling within our family-- and current circumstances are making families all over the world reevaluate their plans and their priorities. So many families are making big decisions right now, specifically about homeschooling, and what David and Leslie talk about today will give you a good basis for making that decision or for refocusing your heart as a current homeschooler before we launch into the new school year. Additional Resources: Take some time to read the book of Jonah like David talks about today. Look for how God used many catalysts to get Jonah to finally pursue the calling on his life-- even if he still did it begrudgingly. There are a ton of lessons for us as moms and dads to be found there. Be on the lookout for the launch of Heart School. In that course, Leslie will walk you through how homeschooling for the heart of your children is not only natural-- but you were actually BORN to do it! She'll show you why and how to set up and manage your homeschool with the eternal in view and how focusing on your calling will inform every decision you make from choosing curriculum to picking a co-op or planning your day. On today’s podcast, we’re going to be talking about homeschooling in times of trouble with Aimee Smith. Aimee and her family have homeschooled for over a decade through a lot of storms and disruptions ranging from chronic health issues, to the daily messes and mistakes that can derail your best efforts. Through all that, she’s learned how to cultivate victory through rest. Many of our struggles have a lot of common threads, so I’m really glad to have Aimee here to share many of the principles she’s learned and practical ways to find what you need to effectively homeschool through times of trouble. Additional Resources: Aimee mentioned that you need other people to rely on and get encouragement and help from and that is one of the BEST reasons to join Teach Them Diligently 365. Nope, You Can’t Do Everything | 20
9:36
Trying to do everything. It's a common struggle for mom's in general but us homeschool moms seem to really be hit with sense of guilt over what we do and what we don't do. Are we really called to be involved in every good opportunity we're presented? Listen to find out more. [00:00:00] Hey there and welcome to the homeschooling family podcast. Here we discuss just about everything that comes into play when you're a Christian homeschooling family, I'm Leslie nunnery, and on today's podcast, we're going to address the topic of trying to do everything. It's a common struggle for moms in general, but as homeschool mom seem to really be hit with this. [00:00:27] Sense of guilt over what we do and what we don't do .Are we really called to do be involved in every good opportunity we are presented? Let's talk about that for just a few minutes. [00:00:38] Hey there, friends! I wanted to come in and talk to you today because I I've actually been thinking about doing this for several days as I was walking. Um it's kind of a followup from the video that I did for this week, the "nope,  you can't [00:01:00] do everything" video. I hope you've taken that a few minutes to watch that, that one has gotten a lot of attention. [00:01:05] I think that it's really struck a chord with a lot of people who like me struggle with trying to squeeze too much in trying to take too much on us and all of those things. And actually, as I sat down to work this afternoon, my attention was drawn to a little piece of paper that I wrote several years ago. [00:01:22] I don't remember where I saw this quote. I don't remember when I wrote it, but it's hung on my, on my little bulletin board here beside my desk for a long, long time. And I really need to remember it. I wrote on this paper, there are enough hours every day to do the will of God. That's a reminder to me, once again, that God is not going to ask anything of me, that he does not give me a path to fulfill. [00:01:50] And so I [inaduible] last night as I was at our prayer meeting, I was sharing a prayer request that there's a lot coming up. There's a lot of work that we're trying to do to [00:02:00] roll out the new 365 platform as well as gifts. Everything ready for next year's events. I'm so excited about some things that are coming to next year's events, but all of this is happening right now. [00:02:13] And all of this is really good stuff, but sometimes when you're down in the weeds, you can't see your way out of it and you can't see exactly how God is going to work and get you to the other side of that. But I need to always remember. God has given me exactly the right amount of time. He knows that there are 24 hours in a day. [00:02:33] And it's when I clutter up my days that I, I find myself spinning my wheels and not having the time to do what I need to do. I prioritize things incorrectly. I take some of the things that should have been, let go a long time ago. For several of the reasons that I mentioned in the video this week, but I keep those on me and that pushes out the stuff that really is the will of God for my life right now. [00:02:58] So I want to encourage you to [00:03:00] remember there are enough hours in every day to do what God has called you to do- those things that only you can do that we talk about in the video, those things that are for this season. God has given you the time to do it. Rejoice in that, kind of focus on that. Don't let yourself get overwhelmed without going back to this, remembering that God is, God is a God of peace. [00:03:23] He's a God of order. He is not the God of confusion. And it is when we allow extra things in our lives that that confusion becomes, um, sometimes a little bit overwhelming. So I wanted to encourage you with that. First of all. There are always enough hours in every day to do the will of God. But as I was walking, I wanted to ask also encourage you that there were a couple of things that are foundational to every day.

I'm Leslie nunnery, and on today's podcast, I'll be talking to Joe and Megan Tucker about homeschooling and foster care. You'll be encouraged as they share their story in their heart to show Christ's love to those who so desperately need to see it. This is really a great followup to "Hospitable Homeschooling", which we talked about last week. For God can use your willingness to open your home this way in such incredible ways. I guarantee you'll be encouraged as the Lord opens your eyes to the needs of others and how you can be part of meeting those needs and pointing them to Jesus. So let's dive right into our conversation with Joe and Megan. Leslie (00:52): Hey there everybody. And welcome back. This weekend, we are going to be looking at another [inaudible] that I think a lot of us have probably considered and prayed about that. But I'm not sure that enough of us have gotten over the hump of fear. So we're going to be talking to Joe and Megan who are foster parents, and I'm going to just let them introduce themselves to you here for a second. And then we're going to talk to them about their experience as foster parents and how that has affected their family life, their parenting, their homeschool, and I'm sure even more fingers that they see from this. So, Joe and Megan, thank you so much for joining us. Joe (01:36): Yeah, absolutely. It's our pleasure. Thanks for having us. Leslie (01:39): Well, you're very welcome. Can you guess just a little bit of insight into your family, you know, where are y'all from? How many children you have, how long have you homeschooled? That would be very interesting in this. Megan (01:51): Yeah, I am Megan Tucker and we live in the Nashville area. Um we have three boys, sixth grade, third grade and kindergarten. And we've been homeschooling for seven years now. Six or seven years. Yeah. And um, Joe (02:05): Yeah, I'm Joe and, uh, I also live in the Nashville area. Leslie (02:10): [laughs] That's so nice you live together! That's a beautiful thing. Joe (02:14): Yeah, we, um, we, uh, been married since 2004 and um, yeah, we, uh, homeschooling has been an incredible blessing to our family and um, and to our children, Leslie (02:29): How did the Lord first lay on your hearts or put in your minds the idea of fostering and then, you know, kind of where did that, that little spark of thought take you? Joe (02:41): We, like so many ways in my life. You know, you, you think that, uh, you know, your plan for things is one way and, uh, and then the Lord shows you otherwise. And that, that has been the case with us for, for foster care. We, we always thought that adoption was going to be part of our story. And adoption has a big place in our family. Meg's sister, she and her husband have four biological children and then five children that they have either adopted or fostering themselves. And because our children have, uh, have been around that. And we've been around that, that's kind of the road that we thought we were going to go down. And, um, we went through three or four different adoption scenarios through, uh, agencies internationally through private adoptions, internationally, Megan (03:38): Even were placed with children. We had a couple of placements. The doors kept closing. Joe (03:44): Yeah, the Lord just kept closing those doors. And, and we were heartbroken. We, we didn't understand what was happening and, um, because our hearts were set on that. And then,

Hospitable Homeschooling with Jen Schmidt | 18
29:05
Leslie is joined by Jen Schmidt of Balancing Beauty and Bedlam. They talk about hospitable homeschooling, which in a time where gathering in groups is so limited, I think you will be encouraged and challenged as you look at how God wants to use you and your family to bless others and show them God's great love through the ministry of hospitality.  Transcript Leslie (00:03): Hey there and welcome to the Homeschooling Family Podcast by Teach Them Diligently. Here we discuss just about everything that comes into play. When you're a Christian homeschooling family, I'm Leslie Nunnery, and on today's podcast, I'm joined by Jen Schmidt of Balancing Beauty and Bedlam together. We're going to discuss hospitable homeschooling, which in a time when getting together in big groups is so limited, I think you're going to be encouraged and challenged as you look at how God wants to use you and your family to bless others and show them. God's great love for them through the ministry of hospitality. Jen shares specific ways her family has done this as we chat about a subject that you're going to see is pretty near and dear to both of our hearts. This was originally recorded as part of a series we did in teach them diligently 365 about living boldly. I invite you to check out that whole series as a TTD365 member for today, though. Let's dive right in and talk about hospitable homeschooling together. Leslie (01:24): We are back this week to talk once again about how living boldly looks in our daily lives and in our families. And I want to tell you about... Actually, I want to kick it off by telling you about a book that I read. It's called "just open the door". It's by Jen Schmidt. And it just so beautifully encapsulated what my heart has been in talking about hospitable homeschooling and hospitable living that I immediately reached out to Jen and begged her to come on and do this video with me, because I think that you can benefit so much by hearing her heart in this and her story. So, Jen, I want to welcome you to Teach Them Diligently. And just, can you tell us a little bit about yourself, maybe a little bit behind the heart of why you wrote this beautiful book on hospitality? Jen (02:15): Thank you, Leslie. It's such an honor to be here and oh, that's such a loaded question because when I think of the book "Just Open the Door", it really is a legacy of hospitality and lifestyle that we've lived. And I call myself an accidental author because I've been a homeschool mom for 20 years. I can barely even believe I'm saying that our eldest son is 24 and we homeschooled him all the way through. And so in the middle of the, you know, the day to day life, I started realizing, Lord, how can we best in the midst of raising five children and homeschooling and wanting to live boldly for the gospel? I just prayed and asked him, how can you make my time filled with as much kingdom purpose as possible? And he began revealing over and over and over how opening my door and inviting others to do life together, whether that's in a mentorship role, whether that's in an evangelistic role or whether it's just, you know, encouraging each other on that mission of motherhood. Jen (03:25): Um, and so when I was approached about writing this book, initially I had said, no, I just didn't think I had it in me. And then as the Lord just prompted my heart to say, Jen, your parents model this open door living for you. And you have the opportunity to look back on decades from when I was, you know, small young child. And they opened the door to me through adoption, which is the greatest act of hospitality, um, and how their ministry of open door living impacted mine. And so just open the doors a little different than your typical hospitality book. In fact, the, um, tagline is “how one invitation can change a generation”. And when we were talking about the title, I even said, I don't want hospitality in the word at all in the title, because as women,

Improving Sibling Relationships | 16
36:51
In this episode, I talk to Kim Sorgius about sibling relationships and how we can help our children not only in their relationships at home, but out in the world! Check out Kim's website! Here are a few of Kim's books on Amazon. Read the blog, "Cultivating Unity Among Siblings". Never miss an episode! Click here to check out the podcasts that have already been released and subscribe today! Click here to find more helpful resources! Hi, I’m Kim Sorgius and my number one desire is to help kids and families grow in faith so we will never feel consumed by life’s struggles. My passion for helping families grow in faith is deep-rooted in a pretty messy life story, mercifully redeemed by our incredible God! Having been one of the 66% of spiritually active teens who walk away from the church in their twenties, I believe God has called me to help kids and families avoid that same trap. Working with kids has always been one of my favorite things to do, I volunteered in kid’s clubs, girl scouts, church groups, and pretty much anything involving kids. It’s probably no surprise that I graduated from the University of South Florida with an M.A. in Education, specifically curriculum design. But after ten adventurous years in the public school system teaching Kindergarten through second grade, God redirected my plans. I took what I thought was a break to have my first baby. (Isn’t she adorable?) Just a few weeks after she was born, I got the call that my nephew was going to be retained for the second time in his 3 year educational career, so I took matters in my own hands and began homeschooling him immediately. I’d seen the system fail one too many kids and it wasn’t going to happen on my watch again! As they say, the rest is history. I fell in love with the power of homeschooling! By the time my own children were old enough for “school” we’d already been to multiple homeschool conventions and purchased a good bit of amazing curriculum. In fact, I was so convinced that homeschooling was the best way to educate my children that I pushed through the incredible obstacles we faced just a few short years later when my husband left us behind. HAVE YOU EVER LOOKED AT YOUR LIFE AND STOOD COMPLETELY AMAZED AT HOW GOD PUT TOGETHER ALL OF THE PIECES? He took my degree, my passions, and my family’s needs and He put together this thing we call Not Consumed Ministries today. Although I never would have imagined it this way, I’m a work-from-home fulltime mom who runs a business, homeschools her kids, and by the grace of God manages to feed them, too. Don’t picture superwoman, because you’ll be missing the point. We have the privilege of serving families like you because God is so gracious to us. He has put all of the pieces together and gives us the strength we need to do what we are called to do each day. And trust me when I say, I haven’t done any of it perfectly! I’ve felt the bitterness of betrayal and the loneliness of divorce. I’ve felt the overwhelm of single parenting and the fear of financial ruin. And I’ve sat helpless as my baby was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

She holds a B.S. from Gordon College in Elementary Education and Spanish, an M.S.Ed. from Northern Illinois University in Literacy Education, and an M.A. in Christian Apologetics from Biola University. Elizabeth spent the first decade of her professional career as an elementary teacher in a Christian school. Several years into her teaching experience, Elizabeth realized that despite being raised in Christian homes, attending a Christian school, and being active in church, her students thought more like the culture than like Christ. Elizabeth began searching for curricular materials that would equip her students to think critically, helping them discover that Christianity is the worldview that lines up with reality. After not finding any materials that met this need, she began creating a curriculum for her students. Elizabeth first taught Foundation Comparative Worldview Curriculum as an after-school class for third through fifth graders, and the results were incredible! Students were transformed from passive recipients of information to active evaluators of every message they receive. Parents and teachers alike noticed the impact these materials had on students’ media consumption, academic achievement, and everyday habits. This transformation lasted beyond the elementary years and guided students’ thinking in junior high and beyond. Elizabeth now works full-time on developing comparative worldview and apologetics resources for children. Her goal is to prepare the next generation to be lifelong critical thinkers and, most importantly, lifelong disciples of Jesus Christ.

During these 10 years of constant travel, Ryan and Erin cultivated a desire to work with teenagers and explored their respective calling to the mission field by leading teams with TMI to Greece in 2002 and Poland in 2003. After these two summer experiences, the Fasts began a journey towards becoming full-time missionaries with Teen Missions. Currently, Ryan and Erin live with their three children, Micah, Abigail, and Ezekiel, in Portland, OR. (Leviticus 7: 12-15) There are few things that will impact your life more positively than understanding and cultivating thanksgiving in your own heart and mind. The ripple effect of a thankful heart can be seen not only in you, but also in the lives of those around you. So, let's start today! Additional Resources: The Transform Journal will help you spend 40 days in the Psalms to cultivate a heart of gratitude that will change your life. Click here to learn more about the Transform Journal on Thanksgiving and order your copy today. The Most Overlooked Key To A Happy Marriage -- listen to that podcast now to see how Gratitude can impact your marriage. Transcript:[00:00:00] David Nunnery: Hello. This is David Nunnery, and thank you for joining me on the Homeschool Family podcast by Teach Them Diligently where we discuss marriage, parenting, discipleship, homeschool, and everything else that comes into play when you're following God's plan for your family. Today, I've taken over the podcast to talk about thanksgiving, and in case you haven't realized that, I don't know if you can hear the bird, uh, back here in the background, but I am outside on my back porch.[00:00:29] And I thought this would be a nice environment to talk about thanksgiving. And in October of about a year ago, uh, the Lord directed me to thanksgiving. I was having a morning devotion, and I actually was struggling one morning with what I was going to start on. I was-had finished up a study and I wanted to start a new one and I was actually struggling a little bit, and I was floating [00:01:00] around and I came across thanksgiving and it was about October of that year.[00:01:04] And ever since then, I have literally not been able to get away from it. It has been a subject that has stuck with me and now I can't- I can't hardly study anything in the Bible. Every story and teaching that I come across in the Bible, I end up looking through this lens of thanksgiving, and what has happened is, is that I have actually come to the point where I believe that thanksgiving is foundational in our understanding of the scriptures.[00:01:35] I think that it is transformational. And over the last year, I have studied every mention of thanks, thanksgiving, gratitude in the Bible. There are over 160 of these in the old and new Testament. And I think each one of these are instructive to us. And I believe there are a few things that will impact your [00:02:00] life more positively than understanding and cultivating thanksgiving in your own heart. And I think the ripple effect of a thankful heart can be seen not only in your own heart and mind. But I also think that it impacts your physical health. I think it impacts your home.[00:02:20] I think it impacts those that are around you, the relationships that you have around you. I even think that people can see it from a long ways away-is evident in you. I think you can see it in the brightness of people's eyes. I think you can see it in their smile. I think that a person that has cultivated a thankful heart lights up a room.[00:02:47] I really do believe that. And so I want to actually share with you what God has shown me, in studying thanks giving over the last year. [00:03:00] And so we are actually going to go through literally every mention of thanks or thanksgiving. Again, i was saying before, there's 160 of them, and I don't plan on doing this on one podcast.[00:03:10] So, you know, it's, it's OK. Each of these are going to be about 20 minutes long, but I wanted to actually take the time, and I wanted to share with you what I have learned and am learning regarding thanksgiving because I think I still have a lot to learn. My goal is to go through every single one of the...

Transcription of "Are you still homeschooling. What an unusual question." Leslie: [theme music playing] Hey there, and welcome to the Teach Them Diligently podcast where we discuss marriage, parenting, discipleship, homeschooling, and everything else that comes into play when you're following God's plan for your family. We are David and Leslie Nunnery, and today we're going to be talking about an unusual question I was asked recently. We hope that through it, you'll get a fresh view of how God can use you as parents, as you invest in your children. We're so glad you're here. So let's jump in. Leslie: [theme music ends] So David, I was asked before an interview not too long ago, a most unusual question, and it got me thinking. So let me throw out the question for you and then see how you are impacted by it. I was asked before I did an interview the other day, "are you still homeschooling?" And I thought, what a very unusual question to ask us. when we have kids still in the home, we are doing all of this stuff. So, um, I thought we'd talk about that today because are we, are we still homeschooling David? David: Yeah, absolutely we are. Leslie: How many? David: Well, we have one in college. He still lives at home. Leslie: Uh, he still sleeps at home [laughter]. Let's clarify. David: He still sleeps at home, that's true. Three. Leslie: We have three. David: We have three, and we are homeschooling. Leslie: Why? Why are we still homeschooling when, um, there's so much stuff to do. There's so many opportunities. There's so much going on. Why are we still doing this? David: Our belief around homeschooling is anchored in the fact that we believe is the best way to disciple our kids. And it's much deeper than the education part of this. It's much deeper than the place. Meaning, do they go to co-op? Do they go to dual credit or you know, at a college? Are they at home all day long? We're not trying to insulate them. We're not trying to protect them from the evil school system. It is about discipleship and because it is about discipleship and because we believe that it's the best way to disciple our kids is to be around them all the time. We have stuck with it and we've had opportunity to move on. Matter of fact, you know, uh, uh, I don't know how many people know this story, but we actually took our kids out of a really good private school. We actually moved down here from Lexington, Kentucky, and when we moved down here to Greenville, South Carolina, we were excited because we were finally going to be able to put our kids in the private school that we wanted. And I want to say that when we moved here,
