I love this podcast. These are women that I'd love to know personally. Finally I've found my tribe

Description

Rescuing the art of homemaking from the daily grind with red lips (and no jumpers).

Episode Date
Fond Memories
3753

Welcome to Homemaker Chic where we are rescuing the art of the daily homemaking grind in our red lipstick, no jumpers and a ton of great memories from Season 2.   Shaye dishes on the glory of dishwater blond and Angela swoons... again, over Lady Mary Crawley's wardrobe as we fondly remember our favorite episodes of Season 2.

CUE THE WINE MUSIC and GET A BOTTLE FOR A PENNY!

Today’s “What We’re Sipping” segment is brought to you by Dry Farm Wines. Dry Farms is an online wine subscription that pairs organic, biodynamic, naturally yeasted, low-sugar, lower-alcohol wines from all over the world. As Dry Farm customers, we get to share in their love for organic, naturally and traditionally made wines. We love them because their wine is delicious - it challenges and explores your wine palette in all the right ways - and their wine makes you feel good! As with all things, “better, not more.”
Angela was sipping an Austrian Blaufränkisch from the Carnuntum region.   A 2018 natural wine sourced from Dry Farm.   Let this wine age for TEN YEARS for maximum fabulousness.   This is a red bled of grapes from on sand, clay and slate.  Each 15 km apart.   Cool flavors and minerally.   Just the way we like it and we know YOU will to.   Give a Dry Farm subscription a try today!

Today’s episode is brought to you by:
Jovial Foods.
Jovial Foods is a company that supplies us homemakers with the most gorgeous baking flours and foods. Jovial is most well known for their einkorn flour, which is a high-protein, weak gluten flour that bakes up buttery and rich.  Amelie made the a delicious Einkorn chocolate cake this weeked.  My girls love to grab the Einkorn cookbook and try new things. This is a company that has an extreme love for high quality ingredients which is why we welcome them into our pantries and into our kitchens. Visit them at jovialfoods.com and enjoy their free shipping!

Today’s Quick Tip for Your Home: Set the mood with music. Current favs: Django Reinhart, Melody Garot, Ray LaMontagne. Blast it!  Don't forget to keep that speaker charged.

We're Not Robots.
3904

Does your life feel like a computer browser with 173 tabs open?   Has the modern world contributed to a disconnect between yourself and your humanity?   Guess what girlfriend - you're NOT a machine and the need for rest, creativity, friends, quiet... it's NOT your imagination.  You ACTUALLY need those things!

Essentialism:
https://amzn.to/3i1GSy4
Focused on entrepreneurs, but with useful ideas for the homemaker, this book offers excellent thoughts on boiling down what you need to be putting your hand to.   When to say "yes" and when to say - "that's NOT essential".

Today’s Quick Tip for Your Home: Do one load of laundry A DAY. START TO FINISH. It can be hard to get in this habit, but it certainly beats washing seven on Saturday when you’d rather be out doing something awesome. Gives you time to pay attention, clean pockets, see the garments, iron and appreciate them. Keep a sheet in the laundry room to write down what you need (ie: girls need new socks, husband needs white shirts, etc.)

CUE THE WINE MUSIC!    Today’s “What We’re Sipping” segment is brought to you by Dry Farm Wines. Today Angela was sipping a Chateau Castellas, Les Escots 2018, a Malbec made by the Roucanieres family.   They’ve been making wine here for 200 years. This is one of the dark reds so far from Dry Farms.. dark fruit flavors and rich with tannins.   For our friends that like a big, French red, You're going to LOVE this one!
Visit www.dryfarmwines.com/homemakerchic and be SURE to grab your first bottle for JUST A PENNY!

We’re Not Machines
Today we’re talking about the ebbs and flows of life. The seasons of our lives and how those changes. We’re not machines! And thus, it stands to reason that our needs change, our desires change, our motivation changes, our dreams change.
As women our bodies are already designed for cycles, why would we imagine that our lives, moods, abilities, passions, wouldn't reflect this as well?

We’re not machines. Therefore;

  • We should expect a cyclical nature to life, work, friendships, etc.
  • We should expect to get tired and need rest.
  • We should expect to need help.
  • We should expect emotions.
  • When you feel all these things, there’s nothing wrong with you!

For more be sure to listen to today's episode.  We think it will help you like it's helped us.  After all 99.9 percent of the time we are preaching to ourselves and you get to listen in.

So, You're Gonna Homeschool
4070

SO YOU’RE GONNA HOMESCHOOL
Our hearts are with so many families who are choosing to homeschool for a variety of reasons this year.  Whatever the reason, take a deep breath.   We've got some hopeful wise words for you and great resources!

For the new (and seasoned) Homeschool family...

  • Few things to remember:
    • You can’t create “the” classroom environment in your home. It’s stifling and torture.  Don’t try to duplicate it.
    • YOU’RE the one in charge (it may be time to brush up yourself).   You may find a little less Netflix and more filling your mind in the evening keeps you on your toes:)
    • Ask yourself: what’s important to our family? What can we cut out of the schedule to make this as efficient and effective as possible?
    • YOU HAVE CHOICES.
  • The most important thing is CHARACTER and GOOD HABITS.
  • Be flexible.  Make it more about routine than schedule.
  • Find community and support, .

OTHER HELPFUL LINKS:

A Quick Tip for Your Home:
Shaye's Grandma told her Mom… who told her… anytime you walk from one room to the next, do a quick look around to see if there’s anything you can put away on the way. “Never go into a room empty-handed”, she would say. This small little habit can make a lasting impact in how many things get put away (read: less mess and clutter!) throughout the day.

Angela always tells her kids,  “Don’t LEAVE the room empty-handed” which of course is the same thing.   AND never, ever, ever walk past the stuff on the stairs.   (Which they do every time:)

Dry Farms is an online wine subscription that pairs organic, biodynamic, naturally yeasted, low-sugar, lower-alcohol wines from all over the world.  As with all things, “better, not more.” Today we've got a sexy black bottle, gold writing: “Vivre d’Amour” 2018, France, Loire Region even if Shaye can't pronounce it, it's still fabulous!  It's a red blend of Cab Franc, Syrah, and Cinsault.  So checkout their better wines. You can get either 3,6 or 12 bottles delivered to your door monthly.

Jovial Foods is an amazing company, run by husband and wife team Carla and Rodolfo. After they discovered years ago that their daughter had gluten sensitivity, they struck out to find grains that her body could easily digest and thrive off eating - and that led them to einkorn. Einkorn is an ancient variety of wheat - the oldest we know of - that our bodies flourish off of because of its high protein and extremely weak gluten. Now, Jovial Foods is the top supplier of einkorn flours, einkorn pastas, Italian olive oils, prepackaged einkorn snacks, and the top-rated gluten-free pasta line. I’ve hardly met anyone in my life more intent on quality ingredients and quality products than Carla - I continually fall in love with the quality of these products (especially that buttery, rich, einkorn flour that I use to bake everything with!). You must try this flour! It’ll change your baking life.

Our love comment this week is from:  NourishedMinds
Thank you for staying in your lane! Let me just say! It is such a RELIEF to be around two women who are wise, hilarious, and have many insightful things to say. The two of you always make me think twice about my day, my attitude, and even yesterday I made a few changes in my home per your podcast. Thank you for sticking to what you set out to do because I don’t know how much more I can take of today’s media and what’s being thrown at us left and right (no pun intended). You two are such a HEALTHY brake from today’s world. The media takes up my mental space and then I am not at my best for my family and the two of you clear a healthy space for me to set out to do what I need to. Thank you so much. You’re on point, in your element, in your zone, and I will kindly ask that you don’t do anything different!!!

Dear friends, can I call you friends?  I'm sure I can and I'll explain why... I wait for your podcast eagerly and not because you give voice to my thoughts or because I
agree with you but because you challenge me to check myself... to check myself to be present or to put love and grace into my every action, to be creative... and so I listen,  and go on thru my day having this amazingly fun conversation in my mind explaining my points in disagreement and supporting you every time you are struggling as we do with friends.   Do you feel it?  I'm sure you do.   Our conversations are fruitful and I find myself being a better person because of it.

"Uniquely inspired - I thought I had rated the podcast already, but I was wrong. So here I am correcting that mistake.I thoroughly enjoy the content here. I receive just enough insight, encouragement and inspiration to propel me into the depths of my own creativity to make my family, my home, and my own life beautiful to me. Like so many others, I feel like I have truly met my soul sisters here. I find myself excited often, when I hear Shaye or Angela say or do something I thought I was alone in."

Spontaneous Conversations on Contentment

How DOES a homemaker have a heart that's content?   Join us for an unplanned conversation where we hash out ideas on contentment, thankfulness, and happiness even in the midst of needing new washing machines or nursing a sick child.   CAN we be content when the modern message is that 'happiness' is just one more purchase away?   We're working through our thoughts most spontaneously today.  Warning:  there will be some faith, some laughter and some tears.

Our love comment this week is from Shelbyandblush: “Thank you two for breaking into my Monday from hell. Finding myself right in the middle of the colossal mess that is WA state unemployment. So many people in the wreckage are frustrated, scared, and discouraged. I really needed the humor, joy, and overall hope your podcast brings me every week. I feel encouraged and distracted from my troubles for a full 60 minutes. Pit List: Avoid despair, go plant something lovely, and maybe get a bottle of something strong. Love you two!”

And now, Dearest "Karen", it's time we part ways.
"Karen" has been an inside joke on this podcast since about day one.   Throughout Season One we teased Karen for showing her trash, and we've thanked her for being "our only listener" as we sorted out mic trouble and got our sea legs with our podcast.  BUT Karen, the media has made you something we never wanted you to be.   It was funny when you were just an uptight gal with a weird haircut that didn't know how to be chic in public when her order was placed wrong or when your child's soccer coach kept him on the bench.   It was funny when "your trash was showing".  Sadly, Karen, you're out of control and in our effort to be KIND and CHIC and create a LOVING environment in our homes and in the world... we're going to have to say goodbye.   We hope you get a handle on yourself girlfriend.
And our apologies to our friends who are actually named Karen.   We know that YOU are kind and chic.   We'll always be friends.

We have TWO LOVE COMMENTS this week:
wildoneshomestead: “Ok, I just listened to the last episode and had some questions about Ultra Feminine Friday… mainly, is a bra required? Because I don’t feel like I can make that happen. That particular torture device is saved for going out or when company is over.”

Dear Angela and Shay,
I have now listened to your podcast on ‘Before the basics’ at least 5 times.
Something in this particular episode resonates with me.
I am a “new” mom to an almost 2 year old girl whom I have at home with me. In Denmark that is NOT normal. 90 % of children is in daycare from 9 month old until school at 5/6 yo. Anyways what I wanted to say was that I feel I have found my tribe in you. So thank you for sharing everything!
We are remodeling our farmhouse, do to a discovery of a nasty black mold lurking in between the floor separation. We had to move out and into a rented flat 5 km away. It’s a wonderful place but it is new, totally new and almost without soul, it feels. Where to start? At the same time I have my gardens at the farm, the farmhouse to maintain in a okay state and a toddler to keep up with. Overwhelmed is not an exaggeration! But when you talked about making the home HQ everything fell in place.
Yes we have our farm and all that, but where we are now, where we eat almost all our meals (if not at the farm with a packed lunch), where we sleep, has to be our base our HQ. And that made my head spin a little less. So thank you!
Please make lots more of these episodes on homemaking ‘how to’
Cheers, Marie

Knowing that you ladies have failed gives me confidence - hahahaha. Sadly and oddly. HA!”

That was a FAIL!

Shaye's birthday present will be late and Angela can't make chocolate chip cookies and she doesn't want any outside intervention.   She's owning it.  Shaye can leave a trail of death and destruction in her barnyard.... today is all about our EPIC fails.   And to tell the truth, sometimes it's been really tough to pull ourselves up and try again.

"A man learns nothing from winning.  The act of losing, however, can elicit great wisdom.  Not least of which is, how much more enjoyable it is to win.  It’s inevitable to lose now and again.   The trick is not to make a habit of it." - Uncle Henry from the movie A Good Year

Freestyle "Blursday": Velma Kelly Meets Tasha Tudor? All the Feminine Feels
3417

"Crazy.   We're crazy for feeling so lonely?"  Cue the Patsy Cline.
What are we craving and WHY?   "Stuck" at home and channeling women of bygone era's?   Someone send petticoats and flapper fringe because we have no idea what we're doing here, all we know is that we want to feel feminine.   We want ALL the sexy, warm fuzzies and turns out, we want to dress the part.   From Angela's repentance from "fast fashion" to Shaye's recent craving of 1700's garb.   Scarlett, Claire, Velma, Tasha...It's Freestyle Blursday and if you've ever wanted to wear a hoopskirt, apparently, we've got your BACK and all that jazz!
(Hoopskirts would really help with social distancing anyways.   Maybe we'll start a trend!)

Scarlett had to cover her booze from Rhett with "rosewater" - you won't have to do that when you drink wine with class from Dry Farm Wines.  What are YOU sipping today?  Drink Dry Farm Wines with Ang and Shaye!   Shop and Sip at:  https://bit.ly/DryFarmWinewithHomemakerChic

Before the Basics: We're ALL Homemakers
4279

A heartfelt conversation about what a "homemaker" is, WHO is a homemaker, and what's the point and purpose of it anyway? Can the microwave meal be part of homemaking?  Can the full-time career woman be a homemaker?   (Our answers may surprise you).  Shaye shares some inspirational quotes about the art of homemaking and Angela says homemaking is a state of mind for the single woman in her flat to the mom of fifteen children.   We're ALL homemakers.   Even our one male listener: "Frank".   Welcome, Frank to Homemaker Chic!

Our love comment of the week was the BEST and shows that @Jess.raber "gets" the self-deprecating aspect of the show!
“While listening to this week’s episode, I was sipping a wonderful La Croix, key lime flavor, canned in 2020, while wearing scrubs and no lipstick, driving home from an evening shift in the behavioral health ER. (So much would have been sipping a glass of wine, but alas, drinking and driving is frowned upon by everyone, including me. And I’m with you Shaye! Sun Gold tomatoes ROCK.”

EPISODE 17.  Freestyle "Blursday" Meets Dirt Dishing
We're sipping Dry Farm Wine sparkling white and sharing what's taking place in our gardens.   One of us lives in a desert, the other by the Great Lakes so there's plenty of notes to compare.   We're foraging for spring delicacies,  starting dahlia tubers, ordering new trees, AND turning down the NOISE so we can enjoy the gardens even more.   Come get your fingernails dirty with us again!

Our LOVE comment this week is from:

Fraennie on Instagram: “Hi from Germany! I just wanted to tell you girls that I love your podcast. I’m listening to the newest right now and this really makes my day. Like now I am drinking my coffee and getting ready for the day. Putting on some red lipstick, just because I can want to! And I just feel so inspired and like I found my people. None of my friends or family is so much into gardening or farming like me. You just inspired me to make my dream of my own farm one really come true and get it done and do some small steps now! I don’t know what to say but THANK YOU so much for the peek into your life and thoughts, I really enjoy it.”

Sun in the Sky: Fresh and Springy

Fresh for spring: We can’t walk upright, out hands are trashed and apparently, so are our houses.  What is “garden house” and why is it NOT a good thing?   Our favorite jams to rock out to whilst we clean and why we think you need to crawl around on your hands and knees.  How we’re attempting to keep our homes inspired and tidy during the insane Spring planting season.  Sun in the sky... you know how WE feel!

A percale weave which is a traditional one-yarn-over and one-yarn-under results in a very structurally sound, long wearing fabric that is resistant to pilling. It has a crisp, yet soft, feel and allows more air to pass through it, providing a 'cool' sleep on warm nights and a 'warm' sleep on cool nights. This is the same weave used in most luxury hotel bedding and the quality heirloom sheets your grandparents used.

Tuck into a delicious loaf of bread: Order your Jovial Einkorn Flour at jovialfoods.com
In 2008, Carla and Rodolfo teamed up with an organic farmer just a few minutes from their home in Northern Italy, to grow the first 50 acres of einkorn wheat. Einkorn was new to them and farmer Stefano, and they were both worried and delighted to see how differently it grew. Einkorn yields a fifth of modern wheat and reaches above 5 feet tall by the harvest in late July.

A decade has passed and the same farmers are still growing einkorn for Carla and Rodolfo. All of our farms are located in remote, pristine areas, and have ample land to adhere to a five-year rotation plan with forage and legumes. One of the most beautiful and largest farms where our einkorn always grows is located in Tuscany, outside of Siena.
