00:38:38

Today on the show Jayson is talking with David Nurse, NBA life and optimization coach, and author of Pivot & Go: The 29-Day Blueprint to Redefine and Achieve Your Success. David grew up knowing he would be in the NBA someday, he was talented enough and had the height to match, but after getting cut from a team overseas his hopes started to fade.

He knew he couldn’t give up his dreams that easily, and learned from his mistakes and his failures, becoming a shooting coach for any program that would take him around the country, no matter how small. He eventually found his place as the shooting coach for the Brooklyn Nets. After getting let go from that job, he started coaching players how to use their self confidence and talents most effectively.

David believes that to succeed in life you need to have the 1% mentality, get 1% better every single day. Gaining momentum is an incredibly powerful tool that allows you to achieve your goals! David sets macro goals and works backwards to discover the process to get there and focuses on every step of the process.

#UnderdogBites: Everybody Needs a Coach with Jayson Waller
00:27:11

Today on the show Jayson is talking with John LeBlanc about coaching and how effective it can be if you treat it correctly. It can be difficult and uncomfortable to be told how to improve, especially if you’ve been set in your ways for a long time, but Jayson is trying and growing from his CEO coach, learning what he does well and what he needs to improve on.

Jayson and John talk about how a coach can be a teacher, a motivator, and a cheerleader all in one. Finding the right coach for you is important as well, it’s ok to disagree with some of the teachings of your coach, but if you fundamentally disagree with almost everything they are saying, it might be time to look for a new one.

Coaching is vital to achieving your goals in both business and personally, challenge yourself by finding the right coach for you!

Matthew goes over the four elements of a good story and how to utilize that in your sales pitch. He tells us the story of when he first got into sales, he went door to door, and got 92 no’s after he got his first yes. That number kept shrinking every time he would go back out, because he was testing and experimenting with different techniques.

#UnderdogBites: Reinforcing Confidence with Jayson Waller
00:14:24

Today on the show Jayson discusses why reinforcing self-confidence is so important in every aspect of your life. Overconfidence doesn’t exist, if you believe in yourself and you know you will succeed, that’s not arrogance, that’s how successful people think.

Everybody has a gift that they can use, you just have to find that gift and believe in it. If you need to fake confidence until you can look yourself in the mirror and invest in yourself, that’s what you need to do! You can’t expect life to get better and be easy, you need to work for the changes that you want to make and become a better person.

#56: The Podcasting Business with John Lee Dumas
00:26:44

Today on the show we’re chatting with John Lee Dumas, host and founder of Entrepreneur On Fire! Completely taking over the entrepreneurship podcasting space in the early 2010’s, getting millions of downloads each month, helping people learn about being an entrepreneur.

This episode we go over why you have to learn to not quit in order to be successful in the podcasting space, why having passion for what you do is not enough in today’s world, and how the higher the barrier is set, the lower the competition will be. When John started his podcast, he was the only one putting out as much content as he was. People gravitated towards his podcast, because there was such little competition.

#55: Write Your Own Story with Tucker Max
00:41:28

Today on the show we’re talking with Tucker Max, founder and former CEO of Scribe Media. We discuss the importance of believing in the skills that you have, and knowing how to use them effectively. We talk about how Tucker was fired from his family business when his dad valued loyalty over good work.

Writing a book is not an easy thing to do, especially when you’re someone who is busy and don’t have a lot of time to work on it. That’s where Scribe Media comes into play, they help identify what the book will be about, and how to get it written with the least friction. Scribe has 3 questions you need to answer to create a great book: ‘What do you want?’, ‘Who are you trying to serve?’, and ‘What do you have to say that matters to those people?’.

Authenticity is hard to come by, and when employees, investors, or co-workers see that you are being honest and forward with them, that incurs a lot of respect. Tune in to hear how Tucker Max turned authenticity into success!

#54: Racing for a Legacy with Josef Newgarden
00:43:40

Today on the show we’re talking with professional racecar driver, Josef Newgarden. Josef has won the Indie series twice, he has been racing since he was a kid, and he didn’t finish high school or college!

We talk about how nothing can hold you back, including being an introvert. Josef had to step out of his comfort zone, and interact with the team in order to create chemistry, to work together better on race day! Josef also lost his first sponsor he ever had, he thought that was the end of his season, but another company stepped in and believed in what Josef could do. He went on to win the championship that year.

Having passion for what you do, becoming obsessed with beating the competition, not letting failures become deterrents, but using them to fuel your passion; that is what Josef brings to the table in today’s interview, and everyday he races.

Pushing yourself, believing in yourself, and stepping out of your comfort zone will get you to new heights you didn’t think were possible.

#UnderdogBites: Bend Don't Break
00:21:17

Today on the show Jayson talks about being able to bend, but not break. To be able to take the hits with the wins. He discusses how making mistakes will teach you so much more than any of your successes will. You have a 100% survival rate on this Earth, you have gotten through every trouble you’ve ever had, you’re here!

Rather than wallowing in the failures and mistakes that you’ve made, focus on getting yourself better, start working out, start learning something new, keep your mind busy and challenge yourself every single day! You will work yourself out of a rut in no time.

There are lions and there are sheep, the lions don’t have to be entrepreneurs, or millionaires, or thought leaders. It’s someone who loves what they do and has passion every day. Those that are great, are no different than the average person, it’s just the mindset that they have in the morning, and when they go to sleep.

Always grind, always stay positive, and strive to inspire yourself and the people around you. That’s success.

#UnderdogBites: Listening to Your Intuition with Jayson Waller
00:47:18

Today on the show Jayson talks with John LeBlanc about following your gut to make decisions in life. Jayson has built 3 different businesses while following his intuition and has learned to build that skill which he uses every day. Jayson talks about when he grew up, he had to follow his intuition every day, learning the difference between good and bad decisions.

Letting go of someone in your business is never an easy decision, but most of the time it’s a necessary one. Jayson talks about valuing someone who is willing to learn, and has a good attitude higher than someone with more experience, and the fact that getting rid of the people with bad attitudes is vital to building a successful culture in your company.

Powerhome Solar kept their doors open during the Covid-19 pandemic, they also started pushing more batteries, those are a few examples of the decisions that Jayson has had to make by simply following what he thought was right.

Sometimes the decision isn’t exactly clear, it’s up to you to make the tough decisions to build a successful business and life!

#51: Overcoming Doubters with Kara Goldin
00:38:34

Today on the show we’re talking to Kara Goldin, CEO and Founder of Hint Inc. a flavored water company, and author of Undaunted: Overcoming Doubts and Doubters. Kara takes us through her life story, starting with growing up in Arizona, creating opportunities to make money by making a camp with her friends and charging $5 a day for people to come and hang out.

After leaving her position at AOL, Kara took some time off to focus on being a mother. During that time off Kara realized how much soda she was drinking, and wanted to make a healthy change in her diet. She quickly noticed how many unhealthy beverage options there were on the market today, and wanted to make a change.

After an investor told Kara that America wouldn’t accept her flavored water brand, she used that as motivation to push herself and her brand farther than anyone thought possible.

#49: Build a Winning Culture with Monty Moran
00:45:08

Today on the show we’re talking to Monty Moran, CEO of Chipotle. Monty talks about how he started as a lawyer, quickly moved up the ranks in his law firm and became the CEO of his law firm because the partners saw he was a leader. He then had Chipotle as a client, and the CEO of Chipotle saw how well his firm was doing and wondered how Monty had created such a great culture, and brought him on as co-CEO of Chipotle.

Monty talks about the 3 reasons why people aren’t happy in your company. There are low performers, which is rare, not knowing the standards of your workplace, and most importantly your employees are not feeling empowered. Empowerment can lead to some amazing results, if every one of your employees feels like they are furthering themselves as well as the company, you know you’ve built a successful culture.

People are much more in common than they are different, Monty went out to show that people are connected in a lot of ways. He shot a documentary series called, Connected: A Search for Unity airing on PBS.

#UnderdogBites: Stop Overthinking, Start Problem Solving with Jayson Waller
00:40:59

Today on the show John LeBlanc is back and interviews Jayson about why you need to stop overthinking your problems, and start quickly making decisions, to solve them! Jayson talks about how he hates the phrase “what if” and how it means that you are looking backwards, when you should be trying to fix the problems that are at hand right now.

It’s important to think of yourself last in business decisions, first think about how this will affect your brand and your team, then about how it will affect you. When making important decisions, Jayson thinks about how it will impact right now, tomorrow and 6 months from now. Thinking any further down the road than that will allow you to start overthinking the problem at hand.

Follow the facts, make an informed decision, but ultimately following your gut will help you make quick decisions. Don’t try to make the right decisions, take action and move forward from there!

#48: Tell Your Story with Brian Scudamore
00:35:58

Today on the show we’re talking to Brian Scudamore, the founder and CEO of O2E brands, the parent company of 1-800 Got Junk, Wow One Day Painting, and Shack Shine. He also wrote a book, WTF?! (Willing to Fail): How Failure Can Be Your Key to Success, talking about his story of how he came from small beginnings to owning several companies.

As a kid Brian moved from school to school, having to make new friends, learn the environment, and adapt. Brian thinks that had a big impact on becoming an entrepreneur. He had to learn to overcome those obstacles, meet new people, and create new relationships.

Brian talks about how he needed to make failures in order to get to where he is today, he mentions a time, early in 1-800-GOT-JUNK’s life that he had to fire 11 people at once because they weren’t good fits for his image of the company. He doesn’t regret any of it because without those mistakes, he wouldn’t be where his today, with the lessons he’s learned from them.

#47: Own the Moment with Jayson Waller
00:38:23

Today on the show Jayson is interviewed by Ben Brookhart, CSO of Powerhome Solar. They are discussing Jayson’s opportunity to meet with President Trump. Jayson talks about how he didn’t want to just be another suit at the meeting, he wanted to stand out, and be memorable! If you’re given an opportunity like this, you can’t just sit back and not take advantage!

Having a moment of insecurity is normal, having that second of doubt about if you should be there or not happens to everyone. Jayson talks about getting nervous being around billionaires and thinking he doesn’t belong in the room. He quickly was able to pull himself together, tell himself what he needed to hear and rock the room! Melting away any stuffiness that was present, for everyone!

Jayson met this opportunity head on, and took action to make sure that he could stick in the president's head and help grow a name for his business and his industry. Take every opportunity in your life like the Super Bowl, you don’t just want to make it to the Super Bowl, you want to play in it!

#46: You Can’t Change Your Circumstances with JeVon McCormick
00:58:01

Today we are talking to JT McCormick, CEO of Scribe Writing, where he has now helped over 1700 authors write their story. JT talks about his past, how he grew up with 18 brothers and sisters, who he would occasionally have to steal food for to survive. He talks about how his father’s girlfriend abused and assaulted him and how he went to juvenile detention for fighting back.

However, JT didn’t let his environment dictate how he should live his life. He squeezed as many good lessons as he could out of the people around him.

JT talks about how he has removed the words: hope, wish, and luck from his vocabulary. Find out why JT doesn’t like to use those words, and how he worked his way out a terrible situation, and bad circumstances!

#UnderdogBites: Depression is Real
00:17:16

Today Jayson talks about depression and how to deal with it. The fact is, it’s different for everyone, it manifests differently and everyone deals with it differently, but appreciating what’s around you, leaving the past in the past, and taking it one step at a time, WILL help you get past whatever you are dealing with.

If you are breathing, if you’re alive today, you are batting 100% in terms of getting over your depression! If there are negative people in your life, get rid of them, if there is negativity on the TV, quit watching it. Cut what you can, it’s you versus the world, and the world isn’t going to play fair. Start working out, start praying, start therapy, whatever you have to do to become a better person, DO IT!

#45: Staying in the Moment with Barry Sanders
01:11:45

Today on the show we’re talking with Barry Sanders about his esteemed football career, winning the heisman, breaking records, and being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Barry talks about how he is always raising his own bar, there is never a “top”, you’re always working, and grinding to achieve your goals.

Even as a young kid Barry was consumed by football, he would watch the games every week, go out and throw the ball around, and even play his electronic football games. It was no surprise that he would go on to be one of the greatest players of all time. Barry grew up with 10 siblings, he learned how to compete with his brothers at a young age, that taught him to keep pushing himself.

Barry always loved what he did and he saw success when the team succeeded, he could have had the all time rushing record in his rookie season, but he let the guys who didn’t get to play often in. He never had to prove anything to anyone but himself.

Staying in the moment and not looking too far ahead has been Barry’s motto his whole life. He played with guys in high school who thought they were going to the NFL. Barry knew that he had to take things one step at a time, and become the best without losing focus on where he was.

00:39:43

Another episode where John LeBlanc interviews Jayson Waller. In this episode how fear can push you to conquer any challenge in front of you and why it’s important to have a healthy dose of fear to stay motivated. Jayson learned from his parents as a child, that he was not going to make the same mistakes as them, he saw his dad pass up an opportunity to start a business, for the safer route and that’s not how Jayson wants to live his life.

No one is going to hand you anything in life, you’re always going to have to work for it and take what’s yours. There is no excuses in life, only results, make those results positive and don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something!

#42: Hard Work Beats Talent with Jayson Waller
00:29:12

Whether you are starting a new business or trying to rise through one, you need to stay all in! That’s what Jayson does with everything in his life. He’s had the success that he has, because out works everyone he works with.

Through working hard, and applying yourself day after day, you can start to develop talents that will continue to build because you now have a solid foundation to work from. It’s not easy to put in all your effort everyday, there are some days that are harder than others, but that’s where the success lies.

Those tough days, when you’re at your weakest, that’s when you need to pull yourself up and start going. Put in the work, put in the effort, and you’ll see just how much farther hard work can take you than talent.

#Roundtable: Get Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable with Jeff Fratarcangeli, Jeff Sloan, and Brian Elias
00:32:44

Many businesses and entrepreneurs fail when starting up because they don’t have a proper plan in place. Not just something to get you started, but a plan for the next 8 or 9 years down the road. Jayson, Jeff, Bryan and Jeff talk about looking ahead, and creating an action plan on how to get there, performing that plan every day.

The business world moves very fast, that’s why getting complacent in business is like going backwards. If you’re not working to improve your business every single day, other people will be doing that work, and they will surpass you. As Wayne Gretzky once said, “Go where the puck will be, not where it is”.

Staying comfortable means you’re not growing, it means you aren’t trying new things and learning from mistakes and successes! You need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable! Experience failure, and learn from those lessons.
